‘Love Came Down at Christmas’ My grandmother loved the poet, Christina Georgina Rossetti. She obviously favored her name as well because she named my mother Christina Rossetti. Recently, I was reminded of Rossetti’s poem, “Love

Came Down at Christmas,” which she penned in 1885. Below is this lovely message: Love came down at Christmas, Love all lovely, love divine; Love was born at Christ-

JOHNNY GRANT has been in the flooring business for 30 years. Johnny is the owner of Grants Flooring Gallery. FAMILY: Married to Stephanie Grant, one son, Dillon and two daughters, Demi and Darran. BORN: Hartsville RESIDES IN: Hartsville FAVORITE FOOD: Pizza HOBBIES OR SPECIAL INTERESTS: Coaching Dixie Youth Baseball. I really enjoy coaching the young kids in this town. We have great kids with endless talent. BEST KEPT SECRET IN HARTSVILLE: Maybe not a secret but we live in an awesome town that is very progressive. From downtown markets to movies on the lawn, what a great town to live in. WHO OR WHAT HAS MOST INFLUENCED YOU? My father, in business and life, he has been the hardest working and honest man. mas, Star and angels gave the sign. Worship we the Godhead, Love incarnate, love divine; Worship we our Jesus: But wherewith for sacred sign? Love shall be our token, Love shall be yours and

love be mine, Love to God and to all men, Love for plea and gift and sign. According to Wikipedia, this poem has been set to music as a Christmas carol by many composers, including Harold Darke, Leo Sowerby, John Kelsall and John Rutter. It is also sung to the traditional Irish melody “Garton”. More recently, the poem was given a modern treatment by Christian band Jars of Clay on their 2007 album, “Christmas Songs.”

American composer Jennifer Higdon set the text for solo soprano, harp and fourpart chorus. A new setting by the British composer David J Loxley-Blount was performed in Southwark Cathedral on Dec. 8, 2014 by the Financial Times Choir conducted by Paul Ayres. It was repeated by the Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree on Dec. 11, 2014. Christina Rossetti (18301894), born in London, was a devout Anglican and most of her poetic output is religious. Two of her most famous

poems are ones for “Christmastide: In the Bleak Midwinter and Love Came Down at Christmas.” Love Came Down at Christmas is such a lovely sentiment to think about as we celebrate ‘the reason for the season.’ Merry Christmas, dear readers, and as Tiny Tim said in Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol:” “A Merry Christmas to us all; God bless us, every one!”

The worth of waiting Most of us can identify with the anxiety of the Christmas season. I remember being so excited the last day of school before the winter break, I could hardly contain myself. The expectation of the possibility of seeing Santa and finding my toys had “appeared” after midnight on Christmas day had my juvenile nerves in a bundle. I was wandering down memory lane just the other day on social media and I brought up the memory that I had of listening to the radio to hear Santa read my letter on the broadcast. I would sit ever so still at the kitchen table with my mom while she was preparing dinner and watching the clock to make sure to be tuned in to WHSC to hear my letter being read by the one

LESLIE B. WILLIAMSON and only Santa Claus himself. After hearing what I had waited for, my heart leaped over and over again as my mom would make a big deal out of it us hearing Santa read my letter. Later after dark, we would ride down town and gaze at the store windows that were so beautifully decorated. Coker’s Department store, Belk and Tomlinson’s, to name a few were my favorites. My dad would then take over and drive us in various neighbor-

hoods to allow me and my friends see the beautiful homes decorated for the holiday season. It was such a joy to be a child then, but having to wait for Christmas day was the worst! It seemed like it took forever for the big day to come, but the wait was worth it. I remember waking up early but just lying in bed until I heard someone get up first. I was even afraid to go to the bathroom during the night because of the fear of actually seeing Santa. I was too afraid for that! Getting up (and making a much needed pit stop) and heading straight to the living room, my eyes beheld all the many toys I requested. I had more things that I didn’t ask for than what I had asked for because my parents knew just what I needed. It was so much to take in at one time. belting out carols that warmed the atmosphere, I indulged in the bounty that was put before me while my parents, still in their pajamas watched me open each gift with smiles on their faces. Breakfast was waiting in the kitchen and my presence at the table was requested but my mind was on what had blessed me under the tree. I often teach about the gift of having to wait. It is something that we hate to do, but God knows when and not if He will manifest what we want and need. My gifts under the tree were a sacrifice that my sweet mom and dad made so that I might have memories to share with my children and with my readers. There was also a sacrifice for the gifts that God has given us and it was through my Jesus Christ and Him crucified that we receive them. Waiting is always worth what you are waiting for and God will give you more than what you ask for. The scriptures declare in Ephesians 3:20 that God is able to do exceeding and abundantly above what we can ask or even imagine, but the way it turns out is according to the power that works in us individually. Make it easy on yourself while you wait for God to work out your situation. Go check out the lights and displays, go find an inspiring message on the internet to keep you encouraged, serve at the soup kitchen or volunteer to read at a daycare. There are so many things to do while you wait that will keep your mind balanced and not overwhelmed with “when will it happen”. Serve while you wait….it will be worth it! Merry Christmas and until next time, be the blessing that God created you to be. © LBW 12/15/17

Pet of the Week

Newborn photography at Carolina Pines Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce we are offering newborn photography here at our facility, thanks to the talented duo of Andrea Knapp and Heather Byrd of Carolina Babies. The women are both professional photographers, and friends. When they were approached about the idea of offering the service, they immediately embraced the idea and formed a partnership known as “Carolina

Babies” with the goal to provide lovely photographs at affordable prices for newborns, and are staffed on site every day. Each new mother is offered a complimentary photo session in her hospital room, with parents and siblings encouraged to participate to create a beautiful family experience. Heather Byrd of Infinity Images in McBee has always had an affinity for photographing babies. “To say that I'm incredibly lucky to have

North Industrial Machine named Jimmy Newsom Signature Award winner The Darlington County School District (DCSD) Teacher Forum presented North Industrial Machine with the 2017 Jimmy Newsom Signature Award last week during the organization’s annual Education Forum held at Darlington Country Club. Named in honor of former DCSD Superintendent Jimmy Newsom, the award is presented annually to an individual, group or business selected by the Teacher Forum for having made a significant contribution to education in Darlington County. “North Industrial Machine and all of their hardworking employees are helping to educate and train students in Darlington County to become productive citizens,” said Dr. Bill Boyd, DCSD’s acting superintendent. “They have worked extensively during the past

Danny Johnson Jr. (left) accepts the 2017 Jimmy Newsom Signature Award, given by the Darlington County School District Teacher Forum, alongside the award’s namesake, former Superintendent Jimmy Newsom, during the district’s Education Forum on December 8. year to strengthen our programs at the Darlington County Institute of Technology (DCIT), a school that

serves students districtwide. We are very thankful to have them in our community.” North Industrial Machine

Vice President Danny Johnson Jr. serves as a member of the Superintendent's Business Cabinet, the Community Shareholders Committee, DCIT’s Machine Tool Advisory Committee, and as a staunch business advisor and partner. When DCIT was preparing to purchase some new equipment for machine tool students, Johnson offered to review the equipment and help in any way possible. Johnson offered several suggestions about the type of machines he believed would be most beneficial to train students. His advice, along with his assistance in securing the machines and a substantial monetary donation by North Industrial Machine, helped DCIT purchase six new milling machines instead of the originally planned two or three.

In the past year, North Industrial Machine hired five DCIT students for paid apprenticeships. They plan to hire more soon. The students are earning real-world experience and guidance in machine tool, welding and engineering, while getting paid and attending school. DCIT does not have its own forklift, so North Industrial Machine stepped in last year with a loaner for several months to help with some large deliveries. “I just want to say thank you to all of the teachers of Darlington County,” Johnson said while accepting the award. “All of our Board of Directors, they’re all graduates of the Darlington County school system. So, you guys mean a lot to us, and we just want to let you know that. We are honored to accept this award.”
