Advice for graduates Though soon-to-be graduates are about to have one set of challenges firmly behind them, other important life decisions and experiences are looming in the not-too-distant future. Although there’s no magic set of rules for post-graduation, the following advice can help recent graduates transition from the classroom to the ceremony and then life after school. • Attend the graduation ceremony. Graduating students may debate whether or not to attend their graduation ceremonies. Such ceremonies tend to be lengthy, and outdoor affairs can be hot and uncomfortable. However, graduation is a milestone moment that you won’t get to enjoy again. Attending graduation allows you one last academic experience, and even if that may seem like too meaningful right now, you might regret skipping the ceremony down the road. • Enjoy graduation but buckle down once the dust settles. According to a survey

by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the job market for new graduates is improving marginally. But the Institute for College Access and Success notes that many college graduates will be saddled with around $25,000 in debt upon earning their degrees. Many student loans have a six-month repayment grace period after graduation, so new grads who don’t already have a job lined up may want to use some of that grace period to travel, visit distant relatives or relax and recharge before their first payment comes due. Use the time wisely, but be prepared to buckle down when the time comes to start repaying loans. • Join an alumni association. Regardless of the size of your school, chances are strong they have a local alumni association and several chapters across the country. Take advantage of these organizations to connect with fellow alumni, who can be invaluable sources of information and provide connections that may help you find a job in your field.

• Read and learn new skills. If you have yet to land that first job, use some of your down time to reacquaint yourself with reading for pleasure instead of reading as part of an assignment. You also can use extra time to explore new skills, such as learning certain software or applications that may help you stand out in a competitive job market. • Before you decide what you want to do, you may have to figure out what you don’t like. Another way to use free time is to volunteer or apply for internships in fields you may want to work in. These experiences can help you determine your career options and find a career you find both challenging and exciting. But such opportunities can also help you determine when a given line of work isn’t for you. Oftentimes, finding the right career path takes some trial and error. Don’t get too down if an opportunity doesn’t pan out. Instead, keep your head up and take advantage of the next opportunity that comes your way.

Congratulations to the ECS Class of 2018!

Success stories prove that no one gets a diploma alone (NAPS)—The United States’ national graduation rate rose to record highs in 2017. The Problem Nevertheless, there are still approximately 34 million American adults who do not have a high school diploma. Why A Diploma Matters On average, individuals with a high school degree can expect to earn 30 percent more than adults without a diploma over their lifetime, a

difference of nearly $10,000 per year, according to U.S. Census data. For many individuals, completing their high

school education as an adult is just the beginning of their road to a college degree or new career. Where to Find Free Classes Studying while balancing work and family may seem difficult, but help, advice and inspiration are close at hand. Each adult education center will work with new students to place them in the right classes and create a custom learning plan. Teachers and tutors in

each program help students learn the material and support them as they earn their diploma. If you or someone you know doesn’t have a high school diploma, visit www. FinishYourDiploma.org to find a nearby center and get started with classes. New PSAs feature personal stories from recent graduates who earned their high school diplomas in their 20s, 30s and 40s. The campaign also showcases teachers who are helping students on their journey to achieving a high school equivalency diploma. The PSAs underscore that adults with-out a high school diploma may have more support than they realize—from teachers, friends and family— as they work toward continuing their education. Share Your Story If you’ve graduated with a high school equivalency or are taking classes to get your diploma, give a shout-out to those people who helped you along the road to graduation—

teachers, family and friends. Use the #FinishYourDiploma hashtag and tell about a time when someone helped you succeed with your education or when you helped someone else pursue their educational goals. It could be as simple as driving someone to school or classes, or preparing meals so someone could study. By using #FinishYourDiploma, you could also be featured on the website www.FinishYourDiploma.org. Resources Available Since its inception in 2010, nearly 5 million people have

visited the FinishYourDiploma.org site and more than 1 million adults across all 50 states have received help finding free test-prep classes in their area. The site has a database of thousands of adult education centers around the country— each offering free classes to help people study for their GED, TASC or HiSET. The website also provides graduate stories, tips, information about what to expect from the tests, and a step-by-step guide to finish-ing your diploma.

Never too old Receiving a diploma is something to take seriously, even for those students who are somewhat older than their fellow graduates. In 2003, Gustava Bennett Burrus graduated from Richmond High School outside of San Fransisco, Calif., at the age of 97. Ruth Hayes Green graduated from the Adult High School of the Perth Amboy, New Jersey

Adult Education Center in 2010 at age 98. In 2013, 106year-old Fred Butler, a student at Beverly High School in Massachusetts, received his high school diploma. He broke the Guinness World Record for oldest graduate previously held by Allan Stewart of Australia, who received a Bachelor of Laws degree at age 91.

Wall Street investment manager delivers GSSM commencement address

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) Board of Trustees announced that Pamela Lawrence, a leading Wall Street investment manager and entrepreneur, delivered GSSM’s 29th commencement address at the Harris E. & Louise H. DeLoach Center at Coker College in Hartsville, on Saturday, June 2. Lawrence has spent more than 30 years managing fund portfolios, valuing businesses, evaluating management teams, and guiding public and private businesses through financial and operational restructurings. She is a member of 100 Women in Finance, the New York Society of Security Analysts, and the Financial Women’s Association of New York. Lawrence co-founded her first woman-owned business in 2001, launching

Restoration Capital Management, LLC, a hedge fund management company specializing in investments and management assistance for distressed companies. In 2012, she co-founded Gibbes Bay Advisors, LLC. She currently serves as Chief Operating Officer and Investment Committee Member at Seaport Global Asset Management in New York City. Lawrence’s work has been recognized in leading industry publications, and she is active in community development through her

work on numerous boards and associations. GSSM President Dr. Hector Flores welcomed the selection of Lawrence to deliver the graduation address. “We are delighted and honored that Ms. Lawrence addressed our graduating class this year. Her many years of experience in the business world and national recognition should inspire our graduates. I am grateful to GSSM parent Kris Reining for nominating and facilitating this wonderful opportunity for us.”

Did you know? The United States Department of Education routinely releases information on high school graduation rates across the country. The information is computed by dividing the number of students earning a diploma by the total enrollment, making note of

students who transferred, emigrated or left school for other reasons. Educators and private organizations continue to do their part to elevate the number of students who graduate in four years.
