MUSC Health is moving forward with plans for a new hospital in the Williamsburg/Lake City region. Williamsburg-Lake City Regional Hospital is planned to open in January 2023.

The facility is being built to replace two existing hospitals in Williamsburg and Lake City and will become part of the Florence Division of MUSC Health, according to an announcement from MUSC Health. The announcement said that the new MUSC Health-owned hospital will feature 25 licensed beds, full operating and diagnostic services, a 16-bay emergency department, and the latest capabilities in telehealth. According to the announce-

ment, the project represents MUSC’s continuing effort to extend its mission to communities and residents across the state. Many in the Lake City/Williamsburg area are eager for the new hospital to be built for the effect it will have on health care and the economy of the area. Lake City Mayor Lovith Anderson Jr. said that what is going on right now with COVID-19 shows the importance and need for health care in rural areas.

“It is an honor and a blessing they (MUSC) are willing to invest in our communities,” Anderson said. “I think it will be a game changer.” Anderson said that from an economic standpoint the hospital will help open up the Highway 52 corridor between Lake City and Kingstree and help Lake City capitalize on some businesses that might otherwise go to other areas. It was the absolute perfect setting for the two lovebirds. They met after each of them arrived at the House of Hope of the Pee Dee in search of assistance. Both are now staff members of the House of Hope. They are also both members of Florence Baptist Temple and its Reformers Unanimous program. The two chose to hold their wedding at the Courtney McGinnis Shelter so the homeless they minister to could attend the ceremony as well.

High Hill Creek Park, a four-mile bike and run park located on Prosperity Way, “unofficially” opened on Friday. While construction is all but complete, organizers said due to the COVID-19 pandemic an officially grand opening will not be held until later this year when restrictions have been lifted. In a Facebook post on Friday, organizers stated the park’s trials were closed due to standing water left from rain. The post went on to state trails would be open to the public as soon as they are dry. Organizers say they will hold a grand opening for the four-mile bike and run park later this year.

“It will give people a lot of hope,” she said. Mary Kelley, executive director of the Greater Lake City of Commerce, was thrilled to hear that MUSC Health is moving forward with its plans for the new hospital. She said it is nothing but positive for the communities. She said it means much better facilities with upgraded equipment for all in the area. She said the area already has fine doctors, and this will give them a new and better-equipped facility. “We are so happy and pleased for what it means,” she said. “It is showing confidence in both communities by MUSC that this will be a valued addition.” Kelley is also optimistic about the potential economic growth that could result from a new hospital. “More good things will come,” she said “More businesses will be likely to move here.”

It will yield dividends to the community for many years to come.” “Filing the certificate of need is a key step in moving forward with this new model for rural health care, said Julie Floyd, chair of the board for Williamsburg Regional Hospital. “This demonstrates the level of commitment of all parties to move forward even though we are in the midst of a pandemic.” “We are pleased to see this project advancing and are grateful to the Heath family for the ability to use their property to construct a facility that will serve our community well into the future,” said Scotty Campbell, chair of the board for

State must expand telehealth services South Carolinians have faced unprecedented issues in the past few years, from floods, to tornadoes and hurricanes, to now the COVID-19 pandemic. In some way or another, we have all felt stress and anxieties with this virus. To say that life is not what it used to be is an understatement. As a state and as individuals, we’ve had to pivot to alter the way children attend school, how we visit with family members near and far, and how routine medical services are delivered and received. This is a small list of how life has changed. But not all families could make these changes. Individuals who have access to strong and reliable Teresa internet services were Arnold able to make the adjustments. Director of AARP SC Gov. Henry McMaster’s AccelerateSC group has made a strong recommendation for funding broadband expansion to the tune of more than $100 million. This funding would help every person, every age group and every business in our state. The Palmetto State has 46 counties, both urban and rural. Through this pandemic, we have all seen the need for increased broadband services that are available to our entire state – all cities large and small. This expansion would catapult telehealth into the future and secure better access to health care for our citizens. AARP SC believes that telehealth could help to remove some barriers that contribute to health disparities in South Carolina. Telehealth has been successfully used by healthcare providers during the past few months to help flatten the curve and promote social distancing. It’s also a way to provide needed health services, especially in rural areas where hospitals and primary-care providers can be few and far between AARP SC worked to pass legislation that was signed into law by the governor. Now we just need to make sure folks can connect with providers easily and affordably. Also, we ask that the SC Legislature provide funding for home-health monitoring equipment to help control chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes and give doctors the necessary measurements to provide informed telehealth primary care. Suggested equipment would include blood pressure cuffs, glucometers, accurate thermometers, and scales to show weight gain or loss. Important health literacy information also should be disseminated to counter misinformation. The tragedy that COVID-19 has dealt can now be used to improve the health and wellbeing of South Carolina’s citizens both young and old.

Teresa Arnold is state director of AARP SC, a nonpartisan membership organization for ages 50 and older.

Long live the five-second rule Imagine you just grabbed the last slice of your grandma’s homemade pie and are headed to the couch for a little rest, relaxation, and Netflix binging. Life is good. As your make your way from the kitchen to the living room, a glass of milk in one hand and that priceless piece of baked heavenliness in the other, disaster strikes. Frisky Fido causes you to stumble and the pie (oh please, say it ain’t so!) falls to the floor. Stunned, you look down and survey the carnage. It’s not good, you think, but it could be worse. In those fleeting moments following such a tragic occurrence, you face a moment of truth that each and every one of us must confront at some point in our lives: Do I or don’t I? Do you scoop up what you can salvage of the

pie back onto your plate and enjoy, or do you chalk it up as a complete loss and scrape the remains into the trash bin? It’s in moments such as these we call upon the “Five-Second Rule.” This oft-invoked unofficial standard of cleanliness applies to situations where food is dropped on the floor. According to the statues of the five-second rule, the offending party has five seconds in which to retrieve the victimized food from the floor/ground before it is considered unsafe for consumption.

We’ve all been there. Be it a piece of pie on the living room carpet, a slice of bacon on the kitchen linoleum, or a Tootsie Pop dropped on the floorboard of the car, you’ve snatched it up and wiped it off. Chances are you probably looked around to ensure no one was looking and then popped it into your mouth without so much as a second thought. Guilty as charged. I believe in the five-second rule and I am thankful for it. It has rescued me from my clumsiness on an assorted number of occasions. There are certain laws that are universal in nature. The five-second rule, as I see it, is one of them, I recently found myself searching the Internet for something worthwhile to waste my time on. After 15 or so minutes of mindlessly

moving from one web page to the next, I came across an article that caught my attention. The headline stated the COVID-19 pandemic has officially put an end to the five-second rule. The risk, the article claimed, is far too great. “At a time when we are dealing with an unprecedented crisis like coronavirus, it is safe to say that the 5-second rule has now officially come to an end.” The article even cited a 2016 study by a group of Ivy League brainiacs from Rutgers University that confirmed the five-second rule as being scientifically unfounded and clearly unsafe. The researchers put the rule to the test and found that food can be contaminated almost immediately upon coming in See SLOAN, Page 6

Moving on: The gift of forgiveness A friend recently saw her ex for the first time in years. It was time to make peace. Past time really. She saw his truck when she pulled into the church parking lot. She wanted to turn around but made herself find a spot and go inside. She knew where he would be sitting, in the same spot where they always sat together. She was relieved the new wife wasn’t there. She took a few steps in, touched him on the shoulder and said, “Good morning.” She only heard the last few syllables of his reply. Surprise has a way of making your words not come out right. She found a different Sundaymorning spot and sat down. Her hand was trembling as she fumbled with the program and tried to mark the first hymn. My friend didn’t hear a word of the sermon, but she

Tammy Davis Columnist

got a message loud and clear as she sat in that church, the church where they married and Christened their babies. She had wasted too many years being angry and sad. She did not want to be that person anymore. She got to him before he made his way into the line to shake the preacher’s hand and asked if they could chat. He told her she looked beautiful. She liked that. She almost said he looked awful, but since she was in the house of the Lord, she kept that to herself. Instead, she said something profound. She told him he should consider it a great

compliment that she had such a hard time moving on. Her anger and confusion and sadness were a testament to how much she loved him and how much she loved their life together. She couldn’t understand how he could let her go, but it didn’t matter anymore. It was time for her to make peace. His eyes teared. He said he didn’t know what to say. She told him there was nothing for him to say. That was the truth. There was no drama that morning. The whole thing was very logical – like a step in a process that needed to happen. She did not want to hold anger or confusion or bitterness anymore. She wanted her heart to be open and free. We all know that forgiveness is not for the other person. It is a gift you gift yourself. Her ex-husband had moved on years ago. My

friend was stuck, and she was the only one who could get herself unstuck. She had been in the gutter for years, but she pulled herself out and made her way to higher ground. I’m proud of her. It took great courage to do what she did, and she’s better for it. Her ex did not deserve the graceful way she handled that moment of closure, but that’s ok. For once, things had been on her terms. It’s easy to stay in victim mode. Rather than asking, “Why me?” the better question to ask is, “What’s next?” My friend was finally able to do that. It’s easy to wallow in the gutter, but the higher ground is a much better path for us all. Tammy Davis is a southern writer and teacher, finding lessons in everyday life. L E T T E R TO T H E E D I TO R True liberty is found through faith in Christ To the editor, “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof:” These words are found in the Bible in Leviticus 25:10. These words also are found inscribed on the Liberty Bell which is a symbol of liberty that we hold dear in America. Another symbol of liberty in America is the Statue of Liberty which represents hope to all who love freedom. We celebrate our liberty on the fourth of July every year in America. This day is named Independence Day because on July 4th, 1776 America declared her independence from British rule. Liberty, or independence, is defined and understood by some to mean to be free to do whatever one pleases. We are only free to do what is right. For those who think they can do what they want to do, laws have been instituted and established by God and ordained of

God to limit this type of freedom. Laws are made for the well-being and welfare of all. When we choose to obey the law, it is good and we don’t have to fear the law. When we choose to disobey a just law there is a price and penalty to pay. Laws should apply justly to all, but sometimes this is not the case. As a great preacher once proclaimed, “There will be a payday someday.” The spiritual law of “sowing and reaping” is found in Galatians 6:7-8. “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows that shall he also reap. For he that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption (death), but he that sows to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap everlasting life.” This is a spiritual law with no exceptions. Man will reap the consequences of what he chooses. Patrick Henry said: “I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!”

He was referring to the physical man. True liberty is found only in Christ Jesus. “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”(Matthew 16-26) “If you continue in my Word, then you are my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”(John 8:31-32) “Choose you this day whom you will serve; but as for me and my house we will serve the LORD.”(Joshua 24:15) The Declaration of Independence declares that governments are instituted among men to secure certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The truth: “Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is Liberty.”(2 Cor.3:17) The cross of Christ is the symbol of freedom to those who are saved and are set free by His blood. Carl Redding Florence

WIFFLE BALL AT EBENEZER PARK

Pair of transfers to bolster Francis Marion backcourt Francis Marion University men's basketball coach Gary Edwards has announced the addition of a pair of NCAA Division I transfers: 6-1 185pound point guard Kevin Holston of Washington, D.C., and 6-5 215-pound shooting guard Holden Redparth of Rockville, Md. Holston played his freshman year at Baltimore City Community College and then two seasons at NCAA Division I Alabama State University. At BCCC, he averaged 8.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game while helping lead the Panthers to

an 18-11 mark and the program's first appearance in the NJCAA Division I national tournament. After transferring to Alabama State, he tallied 3.3 points and 2.5 assists per game in 2018-19 while starting 23 contests. He played in 29 games last season, making seven starts, and averaged 4.9 points and 1.5 assists per game. He shot 41 percent from the floor, including 40 percent from behind the threepoint arc, and made 60 percent of his free throw attempts. He was third on the Hornets in steals with 22.

Redparth comes to FMU after playing the 2019-20 season at the University of North Alabama. He appeared in nine contests last season. As a sophomore, he garnered first-team NJCAA AllAmerica honors after averaging 18.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per game at Highland Community College. He drained 111 three-point baskets and shot a school-record 88.4 percent at the charity stripe while helping the Scotties to a 26-9 mark and the program's second-ever berth in the NJCAA Division II national tournament.

PLAYING IT FORWARD

Stealing an idea from the popular syndicated television program Parks and Recreation, the Florence Parks and Recreation Department recently built a Wiffle ball field at Ebenezer Park. According to Parks and Recreation officials, the field is now ready for use. Reservations are not required, but the field is first come, first served. Bring your own bat and ball.

Women’s Tennis

Patriots tennis adds three Francis Marion University women’s tennis coach Garth Thomson has announced the signing of three players to national letters of intent: 5-7 Camryn Cassetori of Plains, Pa., 510 Viktoria Leth of Gothenburg, Sweden, and 5-6 Nargiza Yakhyaeva of Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The trio will enroll this fall. Cassetori is a product of Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School (PALCS) and Holy Redeemer High School. She has played under the direction of coaches Don Cassetori and Joseph Suchocki. A threetime All-Conference selection, she won the 2018

District II AA doubles championship, while reaching the semifinals in singles play. She was the first district/ state qualifier in school history, and she earned team most valuable player recognition on three occasions. Leth is a product of LM Engströms gymnasium. Yakhyaeva is a graduate of Lyceum for Gifted Students, where she played for coach Mansur Yakhyaeva, her father. “Camyrn will add muchneeded depth to our squad,” Thomson said. “She had success in Pennsylvania both on the tennis court and in the classroom. She has been committed

the last year to improving her tennis game and thus earning a spot to play in our top six. Nargiza and Viktoria should both play at the top of the lineup, as both ranked highly in their countries. Former Patriot All-American Dilshod Sharifi recommended Nargiza and has told me only good things about her and her tennis game. Viktoria should also strengthen the top of our lineup. She is a quality person, a good student, and has had strong junior tennis results.” Francis Marion lost four seniors off last season’s squad that finished its abbreviated season 7-4.

Wilson High School girls' basketball standout Loyal McQueen presents a check for $1,000 to Neal Zimmerman of the Florence Boys and Girls Clubs. As the 2020 South Carolina Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year, McQueen was awarded a $1,000 mini-grant to present to a local or national sports organization of her choosing through Gatorade’s Play it Forward program.

Softballers pick up trio of newcomers Providing the Medicare

Francis Marion University softball coach Stacey Vallee has announced the addition of three players to the 2021 Patriot roster: 5-6 middle infielder Chase Booker of Zephyrhills, Fla., 5-5 middle infielder and outfielder Sarah Hilton of Thomasville, N.C., and 5-10 outfielder Hannah Schmidt of Olathe, Kan. All three have spent the past two years at junior colleges.

Booker spent last year at PascoHernando State College, where she batted .313 with four doubles, three RBIs, and eight runs scored during the abbreviated 2020 season. Hilton played each of the past two seasons at Louisburg College in North Carolina. In 2020, she hit .432 with eight extra-base hits, 22 RBIs, and a .527 on-base percentage. That followed

contact with the floor. The learned scholars tested four different foods - watermelon, bread, bread and butter, and gummy candy – to reach their conclusion. Impressive stuff, right? What a gigantic pile of steaming, stinky horsehockey! Folks, virus or no virus, the five-second rule isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. At this point I would normally say, “Don’t get me started,” but apparently I already have, so here goes: It really took a brigade of bookworms and a study that probably cost an insane amount of money to confirm what common sense already tells us? It’s quite simple: If you drop it on the floor, it’s going to get dirty. It does not matter whether it sits there five seconds, 30 seconds, or 300 seconds, it will - not might, not possibly, not could

likely, but will - be dirty. This is fact. No ifs, and, or buts. You can take it to the bank. No study necessary. And does this information, which we already knew but needed an Ivy League study to confirm, change the way we think about the five-second rule? Not a chance. Why? Because we already know it’s dirty and we simply don’t care. We know there may be a hair or two to be pulled off or a speck of dirt to eat around, but the risk far outweighs the reward. This isn’t rocket science, folks. The glory of the five-second rule is that it is based not on scientific data, but on the human condition. How badly do you want it and to what length are you willing to go to achieve fulfillment? That cupcake covered in sprinkles and dirt specks is still pretty enticing, isn’t it? One must understand,

however, there are variables to be considered when applying the five-second rule. Among them: What is the food type? What surface did the food fall upon? Are you at home or in public? Another important variable to consider, especially if you are at home or visiting a neighbor, is whether or not there are dogs in the vicinity. If there is a canine present, you may want to step up your game. Five seconds is probably too long. Rover will not hesitate. The bottom line is this: The five-second rule is based on a risk-versus-reward scenario. My personal belief is a little dirt or a dog hair or two ain’t gonna kill ya. Then again, I’m the guy who eats ice cream with his dog while sharing the same spoon. What do I know?

Just a year old, Bruno longs for a loving home. He is a sweet male hound/terrier mix. Come meet him!!

How in the world can this seven-week-old male kitten get a name like Chicken? This fellow was found in the engine of a car at Chickfil-A. He needs a home and a new name.
