Library presents Foxworth Family Christmas Special

FDTC, Lander sign pact New articulation agreements will allow students to earn degrees in criminal justice and human services.

Florence-Darlington Technical College students can now transfer to Lander University as juniors thanks to a newly formed partnership between the two institutions.

Articulation agreements were recently signed by Lander University, located in Greenville, and FDTC, allowing transfer students to earn a bachelor degree from Lander in criminal justice and human services. The students will be admitted to Lander University as juniors and will receive priority acceptance into the major they have selected.

“We are very proud of this new partnership with Lander and look forward to our students’ continued success in Greenwood,” said FDTC’s Interim President Ed Bethea.

The agreements apply to FDTC’s associate of applied science in criminal justice technology to Lander’s bachelor of science in criminology and human services; and FDTC’s associate of applied science in human services to Lander’s bachelor of science in human services.

“Florence-Darlington Technical College is a greatly valued partner of Lander University,” said Dr. Scott Jones, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Lander.

“This partnership with FDTC helps both institutions honor our shared commitment to the State of South Carolina to develop a strong and able workforce through high-quality education, as well as empower our students to lead satisfying and productive lives.”

FCSD to participate in ‘Sober or Slammer’ The Florence County Sheriff’s Office and the Twelfth Circuit Law Enforcement Network will join with the S.C. Highway Patrol, the S.C. Dept. of Natural Resources and other law enforcement agencies across the state for “Sober or Slammer,” a statewide initiative to prevent alcohol-related fatalities during the holidays.

The operation is characterized by concentrated, highvisibility traffic enforcement with heightened public awareness.

In addition, South Carolina has a “Zero Tolerance” law when it comes to the purchase, possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages by anyone under the age of 21. Under this law, anyone under age with any measurable amount of alcohol in their system while operating a motor vehicle breaks the law.

Forget-Me-Not Garden Club celebrates Arbor Day The Forget-Me-Not Garden Club of Florence held an Arbor Day ceremony on Dec. 10 at the home of ConStella Brailey on West Marion Street.

The garden club members donated a Little Gem Magnolia tree which was planted in Brailey’s yard by Taylor Garden and Gifts. The Brailey family moved into the home built by Florence County Habitat for Humanity.

In a short program, club member Zilphy DuRant noted that Arbor Day come from the Latin word “arbor,” which means tree. It is a holiday when individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees, she said. Today, many countries

observe such a holiday.

Though usually observed in the spring, the date varies, depending on the climate and suitable planting season.

The beauty of Arbor Day is that rather than looking backwards to events of the past, this holiday looks forward with promise for a future filled with trees. Arbor Day celebrates planting and nurturing trees: It celebrates all the ways trees enrich our lives and stabilize out environment.

While the purpose of Arbor Day lies in the future, it has an interesting history to earn a spot on the calendar. Historians trace Arbor day’s origins back to the fifth century. Sometime between

40 and 500 AD Swiss villagers gathered to plant groves of oak trees. Adults turned the event into a festival and children were given treats as a reward for their helping plant trees.

The small Spanish village of Villanueva de la Sierra is the location of the first Arbor Day initiative in 1805. The first American Arbor Day celebration was held in 1872 in the town of Nebraska City, Ne. It is estimated that one million trees were planted in Nebraska that year.

In 1940, South Carolina passed a resolution recognizing the first Friday of December as Arbor Day. At the first celebration, a Little Gem Magnolia was planted.

The Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library has added Foxworth Family Christmas, a collection of music and comedy programs, to its list of virtual offerings. The programs are available on the library’s Facebook page.

The Foxworth family consists of Jennifer, Michael, and their three daughters.

Jennifer is currently the concert mistress of the Florence Symphony Orchestra. She also plays violin in the Florence community at various events. Before that she taught elementary music in public schools in Charleston.

She also taught school in Richmond, Va., where she achieved National Board Certification in Music Education.

Michael and Jennifer met at the University of South Carolina where they played in the USC symphony, with Jennifer on violin and Michael on trumpet. Michael now works at Hope Health Pediatrics in Florence, practicing general pediatrics and pediatric infectious diseases. Every once in a while he is able to dust off his trumpet and entertain his children with an early morning bugle call.

Their three daughters Cailin, Lena, and Eiley - all love music and participate in voice, instrument, and dance

lessons. Cailin appeared as Matilda in the Florence Little Theatre’s production of Matilda the Musical in 2019.

During the program, the Foxworth family shares some of their Christmas favorites as well as some Christmas jokes and Christmas stories. The family hopes this collection of videos will bring smiles and joy to someone this Christmas season.

AquilaBeats Enjoy some holiday music courtesy of Nick Small, who goes by the artist name AquilaBeats, on the library’s Facebook page AquilaBeats has loved music since childhood. He started playing the drums at age 2. In the sixth grade he joined band and from there was involved in pep band, marching band, concert band, and the Florence Youth Symphony Orchestra.

He has played on stage for various artists, opening for Keith Sweat and James Fortune, and playing for Vashawn Mitchell, Stephen and Lori Ward, and more recently Kiswana Salters.

He also participated in the Doctors Bruce & Lee Foundation Library’s Black History Month celebrations in 2019 with A Salute to Music Through the Ages.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus Eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York’s Sun, and a quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial on Sept. 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history’s most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps.

Following is a reprint of the famous letter and its response. Merry Christmas.

--Dear editor, I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.’

Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus? _ Virginia O’Hanlon, 115 West 59th Street.

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age.

They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

The true meaning of Christmas No one person has had a more profound effect on my life than my nana, the late Louise Farr.

Nana had an extraordinary affinity for birds. Her special fondness for them was particularly evident at Christmas time. She did not decorate her tree in the traditional manner, with colorful ornaments and lights, garland and tinsel. There was no star shining brightly from the top of her tree.

Nana’s Christmas tree was filled with birds, flocks of them. They weren’t real, of course, but they were seemingly on every branch.

There were robins and blue jays, doves and pigeons, cardinals and wrens. Some of them even made sounds, chirping or cooing or twittering. Perched proudly at the top was a magnificent-looking bright red cardinal. Nana’s tree really was a sight to behold.

Nana also had another special tradition, one I wish to share with you now. Rather than retelling ‘Twas the Night Before Christ,” my Nana would tell a story called “The Parable of the Birds.” It is a wonderful story that captured for me (and still does) the true meaning of Christmas. For the longest time I believed it was my nana’s story. It was not until many year’s later that I discovered it was written by an author/journalist /theologian by the name of Louis Cassels.

Cassels was born in Aiken. He worked for many years with United Press International news service.

For 19 years he authored a popular column titled “Religion in America.”

One of those columns was “The Parable of the Birds. “ First published at Christmas in 1959, Cassels’ parable gained immediate popularity. The story appeared in newspapers and on radio broadcasts across the country. One of the most notable voices to share the story was Paul Harvey. He would retell Cassels’ meaningful tale for decades on his annual Christmas radio broadcast.

With immense gratitude to Mr. Cassels and my nana, I share with you now the story of a man, a flock of birds and the true meaning of Christmas.

--“Now the man to whom I’m going to introduce you was not a scrooge; he was a kind, decent, mostly good man. He was generous to his family and upright in his dealings with other men. But he just didn’t believe all that stuff about God becoming a man, which the churches proclaim at Christmas time. It just didn’t make sense, and he was too honest to pretend otherwise. “‘I’m truly sorry to distress you,’ he told his wife, “but I’m not going with you to church this Christmas Eve.’ He said he’d feel like a hypocrite and that he would much

rather just stay at home. And so he stayed, and they went to the midnight service.

“Shortly after the family drove away in the car, snow began to fall.

He went to the window to watch the flurries getting heavier and heavier.

Then he went back to his fireside chair to read his newspaper. Minutes later he was startled by a thudding sound. Then another and another — sort of a thump or a thud. At first he thought someone must have been throwing snowballs against his living room window.

“But when he went to the front door to investigate, he found a flock of birds huddled miserably in the snow. They’d been caught in the storm and, in a desperate search for shelter, had tried to fly through his large landscape window. Well, he couldn’t let the poor creatures lie there and freeze, so he remembered the barn where his children stabled their pony. That would provide a warm shelter, if he could direct the birds to it.

“Quickly he put on a coat and galoshes and then he tramped through the deepening snow to the barn. He opened the doors wide and turned on a light, but the birds did not come in. He figured food would entice them. So he hurried back to the house, fetched breadcrumbs and sprinkled them on the snow. He made a trail to the brightly lit, wideopen doorway of the stable. But to his dismay, the birds ignored the breadcrumbs and continued to flap around helplessly in the snow.

“He tried catching them. He

tried shooing them into the barn by walking around them and waving his arms. Instead, they scattered in every direction, except into the warm, lighted barn. And then he realized that they were afraid of him.

To them, he reasoned, I am a strange and terrifying creature. If only I could think of some way to let them know that they can trust me — that I am not trying to hurt them but to help them. But how?

Any move he made tended to frighten and confuse them. They just would not follow. They would not be led or shooed, because they feared him. “‘If only I could be a bird,’ he thought to himself, ‘and mingle with them and speak their language.

Then I could tell them not to be afraid. Then I could show them the way to the safe warm barn. But I would have to be one of them so they could see and hear and understand.’

“At that moment the church bells began to ring. The sound reached his ears above the sounds of the wind. And he stood there listening to the bells pealing the glad tidings of Christmas. And he sank to his knees in the snow. “‘Now I understand,’ he whispered. ‘Now I see why you had to do it.’”

Old Man Winter is finally upon us As I write it’s 38 degrees and rain is falling. We always seem to be just a few degrees away from snow. This winter a light snow would be nice. Being home with hot chocolate, soup, and coffee makes a snowy day a beautifully peaceful day. But what if you lived alone in a cabin in 12-foot snow and your nearest neighbor was 60 miles away?

What if the power you rely on is bottled gas. No electricity.

Just firewood. I traded letters with a writer who faced that situation each winter. He lived alone in the remote reaches of Alaska, the Land of the Midnight Sun. His letters described a beautifully harsh landscape where solitude is yours whether you want it or not and each day is briefer and darker until, finally, darkness swallows you.

This man’s companion through the long Alaskan winter was a crackling fire. His forays into the snowy wilderness meant encounters with grizzly bears and one day he had no choice but to shoot one in the chest. The bear clambered up a hill. For a long time, he feared an attack from this wounded bear.

The Alaskan writer was John Haines. His wintry wilderness story began in 1947 when he and a friend drove to Alaska where he bought a 160-acre homestead, 80 miles southeast of Fairbanks. His goal was to paint the Alaskan winters. He salvaged wood from an old bridge and built a 12-by-16-foot cabin. When his paint froze, he

turned to writing instead.

Haines long lived in extreme winters in that land of cold rivers, salmon, volcanoes, and glaciers. He tracked animals for food with frostbite always a subtle threat. One night a man knocked on his door. Frost covered his hair. He couldn’t lift his head or unclasp his arms. “His feet and lower legs were like dead things, nearly hard and white as marble,” wrote Haines.

Warm coal oil, massaged into the man’s legs, saved them.

“He may have lost a couple of toes, but he walked on those feet and legs till the day he died.”

Ice ruled supreme, making everything beautiful, making everything deadly. Haines described how a nearby river would freeze as winter laid its hand upon the land. “Free of its summer load of silt, the river,” he wrote, “was incredibly blue and big rafts of ice crowd each other. Where it gathers speed in the rapids above, the sound of all this ice and water is loud, rough, and vaguely menacing.

As the cold gradually deepens and the sunlight departs in the days to come, the floating ice will become harder and thicker, and the sound of its movement in the water will change to a harsher, grinding and crushing … The ice sings, groans, howls

and whistles like a living thing.”

The freezing river cut off an avenue for escape. No way out in a dark, cold land where no one can save you should something dire transpire.

Years ago I made a treacherous drive back from West Virginia in a snowstorm. What should have been an eight-hour drive took eighteen hours.

Intestate 77 was nowhere complete and I had to take a backroads highway in Virginia to Mount Airy, North Carolina.

Every time I tried to stop to get coffee the car began to slide.

Drove all night through falling snow. I’d see yellow lights in valleys far below. “If I end up sliding down a mountain,” I thought, “I can make it to someone’s house.”

Sometime after midnight I drove up behind a snowplow.

Stayed behind it for hours.

Finally, the snowplow pulled off the road. I began the seven-mile descent from Virginia on Highway 52 that leads to Mount Airy. At long last, I left the mountains and snow behind, got some coffee and gas, and let my dog get a much-needed break. That’s as close as I’ve come to being stranded in snow.

This winter should we see flakes as big as quarters tumbling from the sky, let’s appreciate winter’s beauty and think of intrepid souls in the Land of the Midnight Sun. Who knows what they face as we enjoy a winter day destined to give way to sunshine and temperatures in the 50s.

a Southern snow, should we get one. Venture out with no fears of grizzlies, frostbite, or getting lost in a blizzard. Go into snowy woods and study animal tracks, and be glad you don’t have to track them down to survive. They’ll be glad too.

First Steps aids families, providers

Johnson receives DAISY Award

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Florence County First Steps waived its annual in-person educational meeting and held a “drive-by� on Dec. 15 for 16 families and nine family day care providers.

During the event, families and providers received toys that stimulate child development as well as gift bags.

FCFS also provided the families and providers with masks and sanitizer. “As the pandemic shut down the majority of in-person services in March, we had to find innovative ways to keep connected to our families and childcare community,� said FCFS Executive Director Spencer R. Scott.

Lana Hopkins and Anastasia Spann served as coordinators for the event.

FCFS offers childcare scholarships to qualified lowincome households that are working or going to school.

All Saints’ students learn about charitable giving Students at All Saints’ Day School are developing leadership skills and organizing community service projects through numerous clubs and activities. The Student Council, National Junior Beta Club, Junior Teen Institute, and Young Ambassadors Club are just a few of the opportunities for students to learn and actively support charitable giving by dedicating their time, talents, and resources.

This past month, All Saints’ Student Council members sold calendars for the Florence Humane Society and raised $2,100 to donate to the local shelter.

Council officers are Anne Evans Scott, president; James Wyatt Arthur, vicepresident; Ellison Banner, secretary; and Hannah Moree, treasurer. Additional class representatives include: sixth grade - Pinckney Riddle, Bryant Stoler, Heyward Hanna, and Sam McKay; fifth grade - Sarah Dozier and Laura Mason Belk; fourth grade - Chinora Eruchalu and

Tate Sonfield; third grade Riley Flowers and Lilah Bleu Havekost.

The council’s December project is a canned food drive to benefit Help4Kids.

“We are proud of the heritage and continuing success All Saints’ has had for over 60 years,” said Head of School Evan Powell. “From 2K to 6th grade, we follow our mission to ‘be a pre-college preparatory school of academic excellence rooted in faith, values, and caring of the Judeo-Christian tradition, providing each child the opportunity to develop his or her highest potential to learn, in a nurturing environment of spiritual growth and service to others.”

The Young Ambassadors Club is a signature leadership group at All Saints’ that was started in 2006 by Dr. Fred Carter, president of Francis Marion University, and his wife, Folly.
