These are rucksacks stuffed full of activities to help you explore around the gallery together as a family. Ask to borrow one from reception. Great for children 6-12 year olds.

Drop in to our family friendly cafe, Costa. Open 8.30am-5.30pm Monday – Saturday and 11am-4pm on Sundays.

Take some time to relax in the multi sensory environment and explore smells, sights and senses with your baby at your pace. This is a great chance to meet other new parents and share your experiences. Please book in advance on 01922 654 400.

The Art Cart comes out every weekend and all school holidays to help you explore our collections. It has different activities and moves somewhere new in the gallery every month.

Print Play

Great for all the family

Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24, February

Bob and Roberta Smith has created a robot sculpture for the gallery, see it in the foyer. Come along and make your own robot sculpture inspired by the collection.

April Painting Memories

Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 April

Pop into the gallery anytime, or come to one of our organised family workshops that are drop-in, you can turn up any time between the start and the end times, and everyone of any age can join in subject to space. Stay as long as you like. There’s also the interactive gallery, DiSCO, that’s always open. Explore the interactives around the rest of the gallery, use the art cart to make something each weekend and chat with the gallery assistants. If you’ve enjoyed your visit please leave a donation in the box near the entrance door so that we can keep running activities for you.

Join the family mailing list to make sure you get the next brochure posted out to you in time for the next holidays. The gallery has lift access to all floors and is buggy friendly, breastfeeding friendly and has babychange facilities on the ground floor.

Can you remember a favourite memory? Come along and paint a picture from a time you remember in your life just like the paintings in the Frank Sidney Smith exhibition. Tell us what you remember and we’ll record your story.

Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 July Learn to print and make some mixed up prints inspired by the General Dynamic F.U.N exhibition on floor 2.

August This summer we’re inspired by the contemporary art on floors 1 and 2 as part of the Make Room display. Have a look at them before you drop into the workshop.

Lifesize Portraits

Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 August Use your own body as a stencil to draw around and make your life size portrait.

Make the Missing Bit

Miniature Models

Toby Ziegler, the artist showing on floor 3 is interested in art and objects that have been damaged or changed through time. He starts with old images then constructs new designs using computer packages before creating new sculptures. In the gallery collection in Walsall we have some objects with bits missing. Can you design and make some new parts for them?

There’s some tiny artworks on display on floor 2. Come along and make your own to fit a tiny box.

Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 April

June Drop in during half term to explore the gallery, the art cart will be out with arty activities to do, there are different trails or you could take a frisky bag as a family group.

Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 August

Tool Prints

Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 August We’ve brought out lots of old tools that we use in the gallery to hang pictures and build new walls. Come along and make some prints from the objects themselves.

Message in a Bottle

Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 August If you were a castaway what message would you write? Would you write a poem about a visit to the art gallery for someone else to read? Come along and write a poem or a postcard to send home about your trip out to the gallery for the day.

Remind yourself of the feeling of blue summer skies all year long with your own painting.

Clay Play

Fridays in August

Each Friday is clay play day, where you can explore the properties of clay to model a face or head inspired by our bronze sculptures on display.

Remember you can drop into the gallery anytime to explore DiSCO the interactive gallery, take a trail, explore the art cart or have a look at the art on display.
