One of the best times in southeastern North Carolina is when the busy summer season slips into the laidback days of fall.

Fall here feels like slowing down.

The pace shifts, the light changes, the air clears. When we know the last of our warm-weather days are upon us, we savor them more.

This slowing down is not about doing nothing or being lazy. We still do the things, we just don’t rush through them. We are here for it all: checking things off the to-do list, working, catching up with friends and neighbors at community events and celebrating all the things we love about living on the coast.

And actually that’s what making a magazine is all about. Our job is to be on the lookout for good stories to tell about North Brunswick County, and that can’t be rushed. I am a retired English teacher, a veteran of 37 years in the high school classroom, and I have also served as an adjunct professor at the college level. I’m a multiple award-winning writer and have won national recognition for my coverage of the craft beer industry, in which I’ve been immersed since 1996. An expert at beer and food pairing, I emcee dinners, host public and private tutored beer tastings and evaluate and review beer bars, breweries, brewpubs and pubs, as well as restaurants with good beer menus. I encourage the responsible enjoyment of beer, and my favorite quote comes from Jim Koch of the Boston Beer Co.: “All beer is good; some beer is better.” My mission as The PubScout’s is to locate and write about the “better.”

I was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, and currently live in rural Brunswick County. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, my professional pursuits took me to Germany, where I worked as an editor and translator, and then to Iceland, where I wrote travel articles and reported on the local music scene. Life eventually brought me back home to the land of the long-leaf pine, and I couldn’t be more grateful for that. In my new Cape Fear stomping grounds, I seek to meet and write about the artists, caretakers and entrepreneurs who make the area such a great place to live.

When I am not chasing down a story or filing away at prose (whether my own or someone else’s), I enjoy exploring the beautiful and unique coastal environment. I can often be found hiking in the Green Swamp, kayaking in Town Creek or reading a book on the beaches of Oak Island.

Thirteen Graduate from Leadership Brunswick County Thirteen individuals graduated from the nine-month Leadership Brunswick County program, sponsored by the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce, North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce and Southport-Oak Island Area Chambers of Commerce. The 2024–25 graduation ceremony featured a keynote address by Merikay Hunt, M.S., of COACH MKay Companies, LLC, who emphasized the importance of learning, growth and leadership. The program aims to develop informed and committed leaders by educating emerging talent about community needs and local social and economic dynamics.

North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce members and local business representatives awarded scholarships at North Brunswick High School at the end of the 2024–25 school year.

Chamber President Jeremy Gunn of JBG Services presented chamber scholarships to Finley Bush, Michelle Myers and Sean Potter. Ryan Huffman of Farm Bureau awarded Booster Club Scholarships to Emily Cox, Katherine Kayler, Elijah Edeny-St. Juste and Sean Potter. Patricia Mattison, representing the State Employees Credit Union Advisory Board, presented a $10,000 four-year college scholarship to Katherine Kayler. The North Brunswick Kiwanis Club recognized Mariah Bell, Ky’Asia Blanks, Finley Bush, Emily Cox, John Fanning, Ja’Mya Hansley, Z’Kyra Johnson, Katherine Kaylor, Anabel Lopez, Justin McQueen and Ethen Trexler with scholarships. Brunswick County Schools awarded the 2025 Brunswick Built Scholarships at its June 3 Board of Education meeting. This prestigious scholarship supports the following individuals in their pursuit of continuing education in teaching: Nathaniel Brown, Isabella Bullard, Liv Hobbs, Katie Del Key, Doug Manders, Amadis Levassa, Maisy Morse and Olivia Rogers.

These recipients have committed to continuing to teach or to return and teach at Brunswick County Schools after earning their degrees, reinforcing the district’s dedication to building future educators from within and strengthening the community with homegrown talent.

On June 12 the Town of Leland invited the community to celebrate the arrival of Leland Fire/Rescue’s new state-ofthe-art ladder truck during a Push-In Ceremony held on at Fire Station 51. The new Tractor Drawn Aerial (TDA) ladder truck, also known as a tiller, marks a significant upgrade in emergency response capabilities for the Town.

Attendees participated in a time-honored fire service tradition dating back over a century, met local firefighters, toured the station and enjoyed light refreshments. Children were encouraged to attend and explore the features of the apparatus, including its extendable aerial ladder, steering capabilities and advanced rescue tools.

Councilmember Veronica Carter Named First Vice President of NCBEMO Board of Directors

Leland Councilmember Veronica Carter was named First Vice President of the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Black Elected Municipal Officials (NCBEMO) and was officially sworn in during the organization’s annual Summer Conference. In this role, Carter joined Black elected municipal officials from across the state on the Board of Directors. For over 30 years, NCBEMO has supported public service and worked to drive change for North Carolina residents through training, education, collaboration, advocacy and outreach initiatives.

Eight Students Receive Brunswick Built Scholarship

The North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM) has recognized Leland as a City of Civility for the Town Council’s commitment to listening to residents and responding with empathy, respect and integrity. This recognition came through NCLM’s Commit to Civility program, which promoted effective and respectful leadership in local government. The program provided municipal officials with training to help them foster a civil and thoughtful community. To receive this distinction, at least 75% of Leland’s elected officials were required to complete civility training. All five councilmembers and the town clerk participated, exceeding the requirement. The council formally approved the resolution in May, fulfilling all NCLM criteria.

Leland became one of only six municipalities out of more than 500 in North Carolina to earn the City of Civility designation.

Belville Town Hall Moves to New Location

Chad Cumber Named Brunswick Community College BIP Director CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Brunswick Community College (BCC) is proud to announce the appointment of Chad Cumber as the new director of the Brunswick Interagency Program (BIP), a nationally recognized initiative supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Cumber brings more than 16 years of experience in the mental health field and a deep commitment to student success. A longtime resident of Leland, he has been part of the BIP team for the past 12 years, most recently serving as assistant director. In that role, he led the on-site implementation of the North Carolina Community College System’s IDD Pilot Program, which helped establish the now statewide Access to Achievement initiative. This program expands career pathway options and employment connections for students with intellectual disabilities throughout the state.

Belville Town Hall has moved to a new location at 497 Olde Waterford Way, Suite 200 in Belville. This transition marks a significant step forward in the Town of Belville’s growth and commitment to supporting the expanding Brunswick County community.

The town made a short video that highlights their experience and memories at the old location on River Road.

American Legion Post 68 Welcomes American Legion Riders

The North Brunswick High School JROTC Rifle Team ended its season at the CMP National 3PAR Championship in Ohio, fielding two teams. The first team won 1st place overall, was named the top scholastic team in the nation and earned $2,000 and a new Crossman Challenger Air Rifle with a score of 4,395.

Team members were Valeria Alvarado, Lizeth Dominguez, Julian Seda and Alyssa Harris, who also achieved a personal best score of 2,213 on Day 2.

Valeria Alvarado placed 3rd in the finals, winning $500 and a $1,000 Senior Class CMP Scholarship. The second team finished 16th overall with a score of 4,234, represented by Ilene Rodriguez Ruiz, Malasia Simmons, Jeslit Bailey-Garcia and Adrian Dexiga, with Logan Sham as alternate. Adrian Dexiga achieved a personal best score of 527.

This event marked the final match for 1SG Williams before retirement, capping his career with a national title for the team.

Carolina at Pembroke. The Brunswick Interagency Program at BCC is built on the pillars of purpose, support, friendship and respect. BIP empowers students to fully integrate into campus life, achieve personal and professional goals, and prepare for meaningful roles in the workforce. The program provides a range of services, including Adult Basic Education, Employment Resources, the BIP Greenhouse and Gift Shop and Transportation.

Nearly 400 American Legion Riders stopped at the Battleship North Carolina on August 18 during their annual Legacy Run. The ride began in South Boston, Virginia, and ended in Tampa Bay, Florida, for the opening of the American Legion’s 106th National Convention. Members of the Wilmington community and local dignitaries welcomed the riders, with the Legion Department of North Carolina and John E. Jacobs Legion Post 68 providing support, food and water. The Legion Riders, organized into over 2,200 chapters nationwide and overseas, raise funds for scholarships supporting children of fallen or disabled post-9/11 military service members and now also support the Legion’s Veterans & Children Foundation.

Since 2006, the Legacy Run has raised over $16 million for scholarships. The visit included a wreath-laying ceremony on the battleship deck, remarks from local Legion leaders and a performance by an honor guard bagpiper. The Riders continued to North Strand American Legion Post 186 in Little River, South Carolina, for additional veteran ceremonies.

Jacobs American Legion Post 68 representatives for the 2025 Tee It Up for Veterans Golf Tournament. The donation marks another year of the firm’s Premiere Sponsorship of Post 68’s annual golf tournament. The tournament, Post 68’s largest fundraising event of the year, is scheduled for Thursday, November 6 at the Magnolia Greens golf course in Leland. It is already sold out. Carolina Cool Zone, a well-respected Wilmington area HVAC service provider, is also a Premiere Sponsor of this year’s tournament.

The Town of Leland Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department invited the community to an Open House on August 2 at the Leland Cultural Arts Center (LCAC). This free event offered a hands-on look at upcoming fall programs and events at LCAC. Guests of all ages enjoyed interactive demonstrations, including Dancercise, wheel throwing and bookmark making.

The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) received a $75,000 grant from the National Park Service (NPS) to conduct a comprehensive archaeological assessment at Brunswick Town-Fort Anderson State Historic Site. The study will focus on the site’s waterfront, where a significant colonial port once operated, and will use modern technology such as digital mapping, drone photography, ground-penetrating radar and shoreline monitoring. Brunswick Town, established in 1726 as North Carolina’s colonial seat of government, has only been partially excavated, with previous investigations limited and intermittent. This new assessment aims to collect consistent data, address threats from severe weather and environmental changes and support the preservation of the site’s historic resources. The project was funded through the NPS Semiquincentennial Grant Program, which supports the preservation of cultural resources tied to the founding of the United States, using revenue from Outer Continental Shelf oil and gas leases.

First Truss Installed in Leland Subdivision In August Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity achieved a milestone with the installation of the first truss in its inaugural Habitat Leland subdivision.

The moment was more than just construction progress — it symbolized hope, dedication and the power of community collaboration. The subdivision,

Fuller Court, is a 10-home project in Leland, with all homes dedicated to Habitat for Humanity partner families. The 6-acre community, located toward the end of Highland Hills Drive NE, will also include a park and basketball/pickleball court that will be open to the entire Highland Hills community.

The Town of Leland received five safety awards from the North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDOL), marking its third consecutive year of recognition. The town earned gold awards for Town Hall, Leland Cultural Arts Center, the Municipal Operations Center and Fire Station 53, and a silver award for Fire Station 52. NCDOL presented the awards to town staff on June 25, honoring Leland’s strong workplace safety record.

Legion Post 68 Donates to 2025 Veterans Day Parade

John E. Jacobs American Legion Post 68 Leland recently donated $500 to the Southeast North Carolina (SENC) Veterans Day Parade organization to support its annual Veterans Day parade and community programs for veterans and their families. The donation was presented on August 9 with Post 68 members and SENC Veterans Parade Vice Chair Jim Verdon in attendance. The SENC Veterans Day Parade relies on donations to fund the parade, scholarships, emergency assistance and other veteran support initiatives.

The Town of Leland has been awarded $15,000 through the AARP Community Challenge Demonstration Grant to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility.

The funds, provided with support from Toyota Motor North America, will be used to install eight audible pedestrian signals (APS) at existing crosswalks along Village Road Northeast, Northgate Drive and Lee Drive. APS systems emit audible alerts indicating when it is safe to cross the street, which can be especially helpful for seniors or individuals with disabilities. The selected intersections are in a hightraffic area, improving access to medical facilities, shopping centers and other key destinations. These signals will be the first of their kind installed in Leland and represent a significant step forward in advancing the town’s goals outlined in Leland 2045 and the AgeFriendly Community Strategic Plan.

Both plans prioritize investments in infrastructure that support mobility and accessibility for residents of all ages and abilities. 

Whether spirited or not-so-spirted, this vibrant mocktail, packed with nutrients and North Carolina-grown beets, is worthy of toasting in French – “To good health!”

If you’ve followed my usual adventures in spirits and cocktails, you know I love a good drink with a creative twist. But this summer, I decided to switch things up and focus on my health — cutting out alcohol and embracing cleaner, more nourishing choices. That’s how the Can’t be Beet mocktail was born. It’s a delicious, alcohol-free drink that’s as beautiful as it is good for you.

Unlike my typical Spirits recipes, this one is a true mocktail — zero alcohol, just pure, vibrant flavors from juices and fruit. But for those who want to keep their cocktail game strong, I’ve included the option to add vodka. With a splash of vodka, this mocktail transforms into a beet-based Moscow Mule variation, combining earthy beets with zesty ginger and citrus for a lively, refreshing sip.

One of the things I love most about this recipe is its flexibility. For the ginger component, you can choose ginger ale or ginger beer. Ginger beer brings a bold, spicy kick, while ginger ale is a bit sweeter and milder. Both pair perfectly with the natural sweetness of beets, oranges and apples.

Health-wise, this mocktail is a powerhouse. Beets are loaded with nutrients like folate, potassium and antioxidants, and they’re known to support heart health and increase stamina. Juicing your own beets, oranges and apples at home ensures you’re getting the freshest flavors and the most nutrients, without any added sugars or preservatives. Plus, you get to control exactly what goes into your glass. However, you can certainly buy bottled juices, they just might have more preservatives and sugars.

Living in North Carolina, I’m especially excited about this drink as beets are a fantastic fall crop in the state, harvested from October through December. It’s a perfect way to celebrate local produce while enjoying a treat that feels special, whether you’re skipping alcohol or just want a healthier option.

So grab your jars, mix up this vibrant mocktail and toast to good health and great flavor.

Can’t Be Beet Makes 3 to 4 jars

INGREDIENTS You will need to juice raw beets, oranges and apples in a juicer or buy store-bought juice.

2 cups beet juice 1 cup orange juice 1 cup apple juice 2 cups ginger ale or ginger beer 1 lime 2 cups frozen blueberries ¼ cup agave (Add 1 ounce vodka for a Moscow Mule type of cocktail)

METHOD Divide the three juices evenly among your 3 to 4 jars (a Mason jar works well).

Add ½ cup ginger ale or ginger beer per jar.

Squeeze fresh lime juice into each jar.

(If adding vodka, add 1 ounce per jar.)

Mix together well, and add a handful of blueberries into each jar.

Add a straw and enjoy.

I love the magic of fall — the air turns crisp, the leaves change colors, and hearty vegetables like collard greens and beets finally get their time to shine. This recipe — Citric Greens with Roasted Beet, Tater, and Burrata Stack — is the ultimate way to celebrate the season, whether you’re an autumn produce enthusiast or just looking to try something new.

The recipe was inspired by a memorable night out with my spouse. At a fancy restaurant, we were served a salad course with layers of roasted beets, sweet potatoes, creamy burrata and citrusy greens, all topped with balsamic and pistachios. It was so unique and delicious, I just had to try making it at home. The result? A dish that’s both comforting and elevated, perfect for impressing guests or treating yourself.

Fall is truly the peak for collard greens and beets, both in taste and nutrition. Collards thrive in cooler weather, developing a sweeter, milder flavor after the first frost. The greens are loaded with vitamins A, C and K, plus calcium and fiber, making them a nutritional powerhouse.

Beets bring earthy sweetness and are packed with folate, manganese and antioxidants that support heart health and fight inflammation.

What makes this dish shine is its balance of flavors and textures. Burrata adds a creamy, luxurious element, while pistachios bring a satisfying crunch.

The balsamic demi glaze and honey add sweetness that balances the citrusy greens, creating a wonderfully complex and harmonious bite. And despite its restaurant-worthy look, it’s surprisingly easy to make.

This recipe is super flexible so you can make it your own. Swap collards for kale, Swiss chard or spinach. Use Yukon gold potatoes, carrots or butternut squash instead of sweet potatoes. Burrata can be replaced with fresh mozzarella or goat cheese.

For the nuts, try walnuts, pecans or sunflower seeds for a nut-free option. While the dish is vegetarian, it’s easy to add meat if you like. Toss in chopped ham or crispy bacon with the greens, or add prosciutto to the stack for an extra layer of flavor.

A quick note: Roasting beets was a first for me. Yes, they’re messy, but totally worth it for their sweet, tender flavor. If you’re short on time, pickled beets would work great, too.

Citric Greens with Roasted Beet, Tater and Burrata Stack Serves 4

INGREDIENTS 4 large beets

1½ tablespoons brown sugar

2 large sweet potatoes

Salt and pepper

Vegetable oil

2 Burrata balls

1 bundle of collard greens

1 cup salted pistachios, shelled and mildly crushed

1 red onion, sliced 2 mandarin oranges, peeled and separated

Honey

¼ cup apple cider vinegar

For the demi glaze

¼ cup orange juice

1 cup Balsamic vinegar

2 tablespoons of olive oil

¼ cup brown sugar

METHOD Make the demi glaze by mixing 1 cup Balsamic vinegar and ¼ cup brown sugar in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring frequently, until it is reduced by half and thick. Set aside to cool.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Wash and trim the beets well. Rub them and the sweet potatoes with vegetable oil and individually wrap them in tin foil. Bake them on a foil covered baking sheet in the oven for an hour to an hour and a half.

Meanwhile, wash and trim the ribs from the collard greens.

Julienne the greens and drop them into a pot. Add the onion, oranges, vinegar orange juice, olive oil, brown sugar and some salt and pepper. Cover and cook on low heat, stirring occasionally, until the beets and sweet potatoes are done. (In my opinion, the longer the collards cook, the better they are.)

When the beets and sweet potatoes are done, unwrap them and let them cool enough to be able to peel them. The beets will be messy so keep them on the foil-covered baking sheet while you peel them to keep from staining your counters.

Slice the beets and the sweet potatoes into round discs.

Gently tear the Burrata balls into large pieces.

Serve by putting a nest of collards on a plate.

Then place a beet disc, then a sweet potato disc, then a piece of burrata and repeat. You will have 2 or 3 tiers before it will want to topple over.

Drizzle with the Balsamic demi glaze and honey and sprinkle with pistachios.

Back in Action After a devastating flood in 2024, Fix A Friend Spay Neuter Clinic in Winnabow is back to the business of providing affordable spay and neuter surgeries.

One date Sherry Gloer has etched in her memory is September 16, 2024. A co-founder of Fix A Friend Spay Neuter Clinic on U.S. Highway 17 in Winnabow, she was working as usual that day when Brunswick County residents received warnings of Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight.

Rain intensified, and pools of water settled in areas of the facility’s parking lot. About midmorning Gloer and other employees at the clinic called clients to retrieve their pets before the storm worsened.

“You could barely get through the parking lot,” says Jeannie Leonard, manager of the clinic. “We were sending pets home around noon. Then the rain really came.”

Gloer spotted water seeping under the doors, which was at ground level, puddling across the floor and rising up the walls.

She realized disaster was imminent. The nine staff members

needed to find homes for the remaining 80-plus pets at the clinic. Brunswick County Animal Services provided airboats to assist in the evacuation, and other good Samaritans came to the rescue. Up to 20 inches of rain in a 12-hour period plunged Brunswick County into flood stages.

“It was very trying and challenging, but we got it done,” Gloer says. “No animals died. We saved all of them. We were right on it.”

“These women were amazing,” Leonard adds.

The 10-room Fix A Friend facility was not as fortunate. Rain rose almost 3 feet up the walls, saturating supplies and damaging cabinets and equipment. Nearly 100 percent of the 2,400-squarefoot building required restoration.

adoption, created the nonprofit clinic in 2013 to provide low-cost spay and neuter day surgery for dogs and cats and to reduce the number of pets in the area. The two staff veterinarians complete 80 to 100 surgeries each day Monday through Thursday.

The clinic arranged for recreation vehicles and trailers to be redesigned to function as operating rooms during the shutdown.

“Obviously, our ability to provide services shrunk,” Leonard says.

After assessing the damages, the board chose to raise the entire building 6 feet above the ground.

“It was literally lifted specifically to get our main structure away from possible flooding,” Leonard says. She explains that Milligan House Movers, Inc. with offices in Ocean Isle, Southport, Tabor City and Myrtle Beach, inserted steel beams in strategic places and lifted the building.

Insurance covered almost a third of the $500,000 bill.

“We did a lot of grant writing and counted on contributors,” Leonard says.

Fix A Friend does not organize an annual fundraiser but depends on donations to remain solvent.

Leonard emphasizes that the clinic assists people from all areas, not just Brunswick County. If people cannot afford the cost of treatment, they can reach out for assistance from various agencies, including Brunswick County Animal Services, Adopt an Angel and Paws-Ability.

It was not until July 15, 2025, that Fix A Friend opened its restored facility. Those bringing their pets to the clinic check in at the tent on the ground level then use the ramp or stairs to go to the rooms above for treatment.

“We performed 98 surgeries that day,” Leonard says, adding that they performed 108 the following day. “We continue our mission to assist the public any way we can.”

Leonard explains they would like to expand their services, and a long-term goal is to develop a trapper assistance program.

“We want to get the cat colonies under control faster,” she says. “Feral cats are a problem, but it’s a lot to expect individuals to trap cats.”

They would like hire someone to assist residents to trap the cats.

These women, as well as the other staff members, are dedicated to the Fix A Friend mission.

“If this is one piece that we can provide to help somebody through their week or their life, then I feel that’s what we’re structured to do,” Leonard says.

“If we can take this one worry away from them it’s one less worry to have, that their animal is at least fixed.”

“We just want to help people,” Gloer says. 

The Art and Science of Beer MOBA Beer curates locally brewed beer and locally created art in Leland.

When I first broke into the beer writing business back in 1996, one of the big questions at the time was whether brewing beer was a science or an art.

I confess that at the time, as long as the beer was good, I cared not a whit whether scientists or artists took credit for the product.

But the truth is brewing good beer is BOTH science AND art. And the expert

mixture of the two is the difference between just good beers and GREAT beers.

Jason Fosdick, Carl Cross and Matt Ray, partners in MOBA Beer, have decided to showcase both at the now defunct MannKind Brewery site on Ploof Road in Leland.

Port City Daily reports that Fosdick said: “I went and saw the brewery, bought it fall 2025

That’s not to say the art was overlooked. Many beer nuts, anxious to see what MOBA’s Brewer, Isaac Ley, could conjure up, pointed occasionally at a piece they fancied.

But more often they pointed to the MOBA beer menu and the beers offered there. In a short space of time, the bar and the side seating was filled with thirsty beer nuts, all clamoring for a taste of MOBA’s “art.”

As the first customer in the place, I managed to corner Ley and asked him to give me a sample of the beer he was most proud of having crafted. He immediately brought back two samples: an American IPA

from the bank and literally in about a four-day window, I had to find Carl, I had to get Matt on board. I wasn’t going to do it unless I had the right players involved, so I knew it was going to be a great experience and a great business.”

Cross, for his part, has been involved in brewing at what Fosdick described as “a thousand places.” “He is a brewer to the core and this was kind of his vision,” Fosdick says.

humble opinion, depend more on the artistry in the beers than the art that adorns the walls — which, I confess, is often stunning. Local artists will have the opportunity to display their work on a rotating basis at MOBA. When the Missus and I attended the grand opening of MOBA on August 22, 2025, as the first customers to enter at 3 pm, that wall art was striking indeed. But everyone who piled in to the bar after us seemed more concerned about the beer

As I have often said, you meet the nicest folks at breweries, and we struck up a conversation with two delightful California transplants to Brunswick Forest — Tom and Marlene Anderson.

Affable and beer savvy, they are part of a Beer Club in Brunswick Forest that has a membership roll of about 400.

her seal of approval in that beautiful, tall mug. Apparently, other beer nuts also found it appealing, because I could see many of those taller mugs being hoisted throughout the brewery.

The taps, all paintbrushes, were certainly busy, and I thought that Byron and Lindsey might have benefitted from another pair of hands behind the bar. But they managed to keep up the service —

I thought for sure the club had scheduled a meeting, but Marlene and Tom could discern no one from their group.

I had chatted with Carl Cross before the opening outside, as he was transporting his precious progeny, Micah and Noah, home. And I hoped, in vain, to engage with him upon his return to probe his mind about the genesis of this novel idea.

But, alas, Cross did not make it back before we had to wend our way back to OIB after a most pleasant afternoon.

But fear not. Yours truly will surely be revisiting the MOBA. Albeit not necessarily for the artwork — which is even displayed in the loo. In a style that befits my own artistic abilities. 

When You Meet a Manatee (or Dolphin, Whale or Seal)

The Marine Mammal Stranding Program at UNCW shares the do’s and don’ts of observing marine mammals in Brunswick County without putting them or yourself at risk.

We humans are not the only ones who love Brunswick County’s waterways.

Marine mammals live and vacation here too. Dolphins, whales and even the occasional seal can be spotted near our shores. And now there’s a relatively new seasonal guest in the area: the slow and gentle manatee.

“In Brunswick County in the summer, they’re there in big numbers,” says Dr. Michael Tift, director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Program (MMSP) at UNC Wilmington, of manatees.

When ocean-going mammals wash up on the beach or in the Intracoastal Waterway, Tift and his colleagues from the MMSP are among the first on the scene to assess the situation.

Composed of academics, veterinarians and student assistants, the MMSP is both a designated responder organization and a research team. Its jobs are to evaluate stranded mammals that are still alive, to see what kind of medical care might be appropriate, as well as to recover the bodies of deceased marine mammals for study purposes, to hopefully find out why the animal died and what can be learned about the species overall.

Tift and his colleague Dr. Tiffany Keenan, marine mammal stranding coordinator for the MMSP, recently provided some helpful tips on how to keep everyone safe — humans and animals alike — if you encounter a marine mammal in the wild.

Whether it’s a dolphin washed up on the beach, a seal sunning on jetty rocks or a manatee swimming slow as molasses through your local marina, this is how to observe and help the animal while also steering clear of health hazards and legal trouble.

“We ask the public to call us because then they can help us identify what the situation is,” Tift says.

If you can’t find the MMSP number, you can always call your local police department or even 911. All emergency call center operators in the area know when to reroute calls to the MMSP.

try to help a stranded marine mammal unless you have been instructed to by the MMSP. “We don’t want [the public] ever to act without contacting us first, because it’s completely illegal for them to do anything without authorization” Tift says.

While people understandably want to help a stranded animal, trying to push or drag a dolphin into the water can severely injure it. It can also lead to injury for the person. In the same way, pouring water on a stranded marine mammal could potentially suffocate it if done incorrectly. Instead, call the MMSP hotline for instructions.

“These animals often carry diseases that can be transferred over to humans and pets, so you do not want your pet anywhere close to one,” Tift says.

report any manatees you spot in North Carolina, whether the animal is swimming or stranded, alive or dead. As ocean waters warm up, manatees are travelling farther north than they used to, including into North Carolina. The MMSP has a manatee sighting form on its website and is asking the public to report any occurrences of these curious, plant-eating “sea cows.”

According to Tift, “We are using that citizen science to tell us more about the number of animals in the area and the locations that they frequent, which happens to be a lot of the marinas in Brunswick County.”

give manatees food or water, even if they swim up to you. It’s important that they not get accustomed to food and water coming from humans. That could cause them to stay around North Carolina too late into the season, where they will be at risk of cold shock, which can kill them. Better to let them fend for themselves and head back to Florida when the time is right.

slow down your boat when travelling through areas frequented by manatees or whales. Dolphins are lightning fast and can generally avoid moving boats. Whales and manatees are much slower, and propeller strikes are one of the greatest dangers they face. Slowing down will hopefully give them time to move out of the way.

“Staying under 10 knots is what we recommend for large whales,” Keenan says.

Manatees are slower yet, so if you’re boating in a marina or in the Intracoastal Waterway and see a manatee, “Put it in neutral and just enjoy seeing the manatee, or stay at least 50 yards away from it,” she says.

DON’T

deliberately approach a marine mammal with a boat.

Harassing or chasing marine mammals is illegal and could get you a very hefty fine and up to a year in prison.

However, if your boat engine is in idle and the animal approaches you, you are in the clear.

DO

consider donating to the MMSP. Federal grants and university funding only cover part of its expenses. The program relies on donations to help fund some of its response and research projects.

DON’T

release ballons outside, on the beach or anywhere else.

They eventually come back down to earth, and if they land in the water, whales and dolphins could mistake them for jellyfish and eat them. This is what caused the death of a Gervais’ beaked whale on the North Carolina coast in 2023.

DO

and most importantly, DO take in the moment if you see a live marine mammal.

“If you get a chance to see dolphins or manatees in the area, cut the engine and just enjoy it,” Tift says. “It’s a wonderful experience to see these animals in the wild, especially when they’re happy and healthy.” 

tune in to marine radio channel 16.

“We try an alert on channel 16 if there are marine mammals in the area to be careful of,” Keenan says.

The Melioristic World of MisterDanTastic For Daniel Mask, balloon art is more than fun and games — it’s a hands-on philosophy for making the world just a little bit better.

After I had arranged to meet up with Daniel Mask, aka MisterDanTastic, and arrived at our agreed-upon meeting location, I realize that I had neglected to get a brief description of him so I knew who to approach.

But as quickly as I have this thought, I see a man walking from his car toward the entrance, and there is no doubt in my mind that this is “MisterDanTastic.” His brightly colored graphic t-shirt, wide smile and bubbly demeanor reassure me he that he is indeed Brunswick County’s beloved balloon artist.

I’ll be honest: My curiosity is getting the better of me. Why does a retired man choose to be a balloon man? What does he get out of it? When did this passion turn into a business?

Dan is more than happy to answer all my questions, but first he wants me to clearly understand his life philosophy and how it translates into him performing as a balloon artist.

“Meliorism serves as the philosophical foundation of my balloon art, embodying the belief that creativity is the cornerstone of making the world a better place,” he says, going on to explain that balloon art, while whimsical in nature, can start conversations about social issues during the interactive experience. It serves as an effective teaching tool to create engagement within a group in a nonconfrontational manner.

Dan grew up in Onslow County, North Carolina, and his family moved to South Philadelphia when he was young. In 1974 he graduated from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania with a degree in art education. He joined the Peace Corps in 1976 and

taught English and woodworking for two years in Sierra Leone, West Africa.

After the Peace Corps, Dan lived in Houston, Texas, and worked as a graphic designer. In 1990 he received his master’s degree in MSOE, Quality/ Organizational Effectiveness, from the University of Houston. Thereafter, he moved to Charlotte and spent almost 40 years working as an HR professional.

artist for hire. But his balloon art business began many years before that.

In 2008 Dan says he felt like it was the end of the world for him because he was a job recruiter suddenly in a world where there were no jobs. His son was 5 years old at the time and seemed wise beyond his age. Dan says he was trying to explain his work

situation to his son, who said, “Daddy, you could make balloon art. You can make balloon animals.” The innocence of his child’s thought process gave Dan the idea that he could make a difference through balloon art.

After hours watching YouTube videos on how to make balloon art, Dan says he failed and failed and finally one day he got it.

“I have a degree in art anyway, and I knew how to use my hands to make things, so it didn’t seem like such a stretch,” he says.

When I ask if he could explain what failed meant, Dan says he just could not make the balloons, it was hard to do. Finally, he realized he had to become one with the balloon and get

breathe life into malleable materials and create something magical that brings joy to others. Through a child’s laughter and sense of wonder, Dan believes he is taking part in the vision that creative arts, no matter how basic or small, can contribute to a better world for us all.

When I ask Dan how long the balloons will last, he merely shrugs and implies that nothing is forever.

The gradual deflation process further demonstrates the final step in its life and the impermanence of things in general. It brings forth the knowledge that savoring the moment and understanding the lesson learned from each unique creation completes the cycle. However, he says that you can freeze balloon art and it will last much longer. In fact, Dan knows someone who loved his piece of art so much he froze it for years.

Lower Cape Fear Historical Society’s Old Wilmington by Candlelight Tour is a tradition that provides cherished holiday memories for young and old.

The 2025 tour includes more than a dozen historic homes and churches, the Wilmington Railroad Museum and the Hannah Block Community Arts Center on S. 2nd Street.

Of particular note is the home at 107 S. 4th Street, the William A. French House. The Italianatestyle residence was built for William Augustus French, a boot and shoe merchant, and his wife, Harriet Perkins Timmonds.

“It was built by Alexander Strausz, a Hungarian-American architect who designed several other historic structures in Wilmington, including the Temple of Israel, the HasellParsley House and the Tileston School,” says Ginger R. Davis, executive director of the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society.

Every December, one event in the Wilmington historic district has embodied the city’s Christmas traditions for more than five decades: the Old Wilmington

by Candlelight Tour, also known simply as the Candlelight Tour.

Over the course of two days, ticket holders guide themselves along cobblestone streets to some of the most spectacular private homes, churches and historical buildings in Downtown Wilmington, each adorned with a variety of Christmas themes. At each stop, a docent shares history of the property while visitors enjoy the holiday décor.

Also noteworthy is the cottage at 311 Cottage Lane, which was artist Elizabeth Chant's studio and became the preeminent art hub in early 20th-century Wilmington.

“Chant arrived in the Port City in 1922, rented the home on Cottage Lane and set up her studio,” Davis says. “She hoped to establish an art colony. She would become a teacher and mentor to local artists like Claude Howell, Henry Jay MacMillan and Hester Donnelly. Because of her efforts, Wilmington Museum of Art, the precursor to Cameron Art Museum, was founded.”

The annual Candlelight Tour is a fundraiser for the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society, a nonprofit organization that maintains the Latimer House Museum and Gardens on S. 3rd Street. Further preserving Wilmington’s rich history, the Latimer House also houses historic archives.

Looking back to the 2024 tour, one tour stop was the historic home at 314 S. Front Street, which was reportedly built on a former Revolutionary War encampment site known as Sunset Hill. Presentday homeowners Jody and Bruce Kemp purchased the Queen Anne-style, two-story home in 2019. The home was built in 1899 as the residence of grocer and mercantile wholesaler Philander Pearsall, a native of Duplin County. His business, McNair & Pearsall, was in the three-story building at 214 N. Water Street. The house was next owned by widower Elijah Hewlett, who served as assistant general passenger agent for the Atlantic Coastline Railroad for 57 years.

While their home is not on the 2025 tour, the Kemps will still decorate.

“I love to challenge my own decorating skills,” Jody Kemp says.

“Room by room, I planned the 2024 Candlelight Christmas historic tour by color in each room. Christmas decor is reflected in each room’s color palette.”

The Kemps’ home was a fine example of historic Wilmington architecture for the 2024 tour. The four-bedroom, four-bath home, with multiple fireplaces, features heart pine and tiger oak parquet flooring. The quarter-acre lot, situated more than 30 feet above sea level, offers panoramic views of the Cape Fear River and the surrounding skyline. The Philander Pearsall house sits on the lot purchased by Mary Pearsall the previous year and appears on a 1900s Sandborn Insurance Company map.

The home’s original exterior character is evidenced by its irregular roof line, many chimneys and deep double porches on the front, back and second floor. The home has a cylindrical tower on the front (east) side, with plentiful windows (some are stained glass) in the romantic movement style of the Victorian era. A private driveway leads to an expansive rear yard overlooking the river.

Inside, a large wooden staircase ascends from the front foyer. Rooms offer 9-foot ceilings. To the left of the center foyer is a front parlor, which flows into the living room and then opens to a modern family room that extends across the rear of the house into the adjacent renovated kitchen.

All are decorated each year to the enjoyment of the family and guests.

“I have always loved hospitality,” Kemp says. “Welcoming people into my home

gives me great joy. Most of the time, visitors report feeling a sense of calm and being loved. I don’t believe this is me but the presence of the Holy Spirit in my home. This makes me happy. So, hospitality is essential to my love for people.”

Kemp sites education as part of her driving force to opening her home to visitors on the 2024 tour.

“I’ve come to appreciate the value of educating young people and anyone who might be interested in the value of preserving these beautiful old homes for posterity,” Kemp says. “I have enjoyed interior design for many years since I used to successfully buy and flip houses in the 1980s in New York and Virginia, as well as our Victorian home in Wilmington. Our history here in Wilmington is so rich that people who have lived here are all a part of it.” 

Young and old dart around the grassy yard to avoid being squirted with water as they aim their own oversized water guns at opponents. Family members and their guests relax under canopies to watch the excitement and enjoy kinship with those around them. They ignore the clouds and rain on this August day because this is the 2nd annual Perkins Family Fun Day on Perkins Road in Northwest. Holding a microphone, Tina Perkins announces, “Get on the slide and enjoy all the games. If you don’t participate, how can it be Fun Day?”

She stretches her arm out to include the entire group.

The crowd members bow their heads as Tina says a prayer to thank God for the food before she returns to the grill, where she observes the roasting chickens, chicken wings, hot dogs and sausages. Nearby, her husband Shelton, Sr., aka Big Shelton, tends to the briskets and Boston butt roasts he started smoking the day before. As hosts, they ensure everyone fills a plate from the extensive menu, meets the other guests and definitely has a good time.

“Actually, Fun Day started when I gave my son a graduation party in 2015,” Shelton says. “We’ve had it since then but we just didn’t name it until last year.”

People not familiar with the Perkins family learn from their welcoming greetings and animated conversations that they value relationships, education, athletics and respect for everyone.

Elijah Perkins, Big Shelton’s father, is the senior-most member of the family at 78, and all family members come to greet him, including his siblings. He explains that his great-great-grandfather, James Shimes, was a slave. James

Elijah says. “My mom started things we still do. Every Easter, every Mother’s Day and every Father’s Day we have a celebration. She asked us to keep it going, so we can keep having love for each other.”

Cousin Iris White sits nearby wearing a T-shirt with HBCU in the middle of a diamond shape and the words Historically Black Colleges and Universities surrounding it.

She and her husband Joseph “Jo-Jo” White have received several awards for their exceptional ability as athletes, coaches and educators. They were recognized as Living Legends in the North Carolina HBCU Awards/Scholarship Initiative.

Jo-Jo, who played football in the Canadian Football League and the Tampa Bay Bandits in the former United States Football League, is also in the HBCU Living Legends Hall of Fame and the Livingstone College Hall of Fame.

was freed and reunited with his relatives and took the family name of Perkins. James fought with the U.S. Colored Troops, and although Elijah never met him, he was the model for James’ image represented in Boundless. This is the bronze sculpture with features of 11 African American men who fought in the Civil War Battle of Forks Road. The sculpture is on the grounds of the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington.

Through the generations, the Perkins family farmed cotton, tobacco, corn and other crops to make a living. Elijah laughs and says, “I couldn’t wait to turn 18 so I could leave the farm.”

After he graduated from Lincoln High School in Leland, Elijah got a job at a chemical plant in Riegelwood. He married Jeanette in 1967 and they have four children, Myron, Andre, Shelton and Tiffany Montgomery.

His brother Douglas, 74, wanted to get off the farm, too. He points to his hat with Vietnam on it. “I was in the artillery,” he says. “We were one mile from the DMZ.” “One thing about this family is that everyone works together, and we have no color barriers,”

recognition as superior athletes at St. Augustine University in Raleigh, Iris’ alma mater. Livingstone College in Salisbury and St. Augustine University are favorites of the Perkins family.

“We are a sports-oriented family,” Iris says. “We communicate with family and have a close network in sports.”

“Every Perkins boy played baseball at Leland Dixie Youth,” Elijah says. “I coached for about 12 years.”

Shelton, Jr., 28, is among the many Perkins who played professional sports. He began playing baseball in fifth grade and went on to play on the Baltimore Orioles’ Minor League team, the Aberdeen IronBirds.

His career was shortened in 2023 after he had reconstruction surgery on his elbow, referred to as Tommy John surgery.

“It was pretty bad,” he says. “If you pitch long enough, it’s probably going to happen.”

What he misses most is the people he met. “I haven’t missed playing,” he says. “I enjoy meeting people and working for Computer

Shelton, Jr. is happy to be living in Leland again and celebrating with his family.

“This is one of my favorite days of the year with the people and the family coming together,” he says. “I want my kids to be raised in this. We are a loving family. We try to make everyone feel included even if your name isn’t Perkins.”

His girlfriend, Melissa Carvalho, a social worker with Social Services in Brunswick County and former college soccer player, met Shelton when both were students and athletes at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

“The whole family is coming together, playing games, eating, listening to music,” she says. “It’s a good time for everyone.”

Family cousin Owen Perkins, 37, played wide receiver on professional football teams for three years, ending his career with the Minnesota Vikings.

“I miss traveling around the country,” he says, but he

enjoys his job at Live Oak Bank.

Taylor Perkins, 25, the daughter of Serena and Keven Perkins, played basketball at North Brunswick High School (NBHS), was named regional player of the year and accepted a scholarship to play the game at Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina, in 2017. She now runs a courier service in Wilmington.

Shannon Perkins Fortune played basketball and softball when she attended NBHS, and for several years she and her husband, Travis Fortune, have coached at NBHS. Both found their calling there. “I like impacting lives,” Travis says.

With plates cleared and the rain subsiding, cornhole, volleyball and sack races are on the agenda. Matthew Lewis, a DJ from Grown Folks Entertainment, sets up his equipment on the deck at the house so people can dance and sing along with his selections and any requests.

“I play all of the types of music,” he says. “I listen to so much music that I don’t have a favorite. I play it all.”

When asked what his favorite game is, Elijah says, “Sitting here.” Those around him laugh and some agree. 
