Learn more about how Lake Nona’s landscaping team keeps the community beautiful From utilizing eco-friendly building materials like self-tinting View Smart Windows and experimenting with the latest green technology like new autonomous lawn mowers, Lake Nona is dedicated to finding new and sustainable solutions that keep our community looking its best. The team tasked with enhancing Lake Nona’s beautiful native landscape is led by Matt McDermott. In his role, McDermott oversees the design and installation of landscaping across Lake Nona including residential and commercial developments. “As a landscape architect, I help come up with our design for Lake Nona and oversee the implementation process from supervising during design to managing the installation,” said McDermott. “I love what I do because I

get to be creative. In Lake Nona, I work with a team that has a creative vision for what’s going to look good for the long term because we’re going to be here long term.”

When planning out new landscaping projects, it’s important for the team to use native materials and incorporate the existing conditions. The goal is for anything that’s added to look like it was there all along. One of the team’s design practices is to always have trees in bloom. This year, Lake Nona planted 100 flowering trees in 12 different varieties around the community to see what would do well, so we can expand use of them. There are also new wildflower fields along Tavistock Lakes and Lake Nona Boulevards that provide color and create interest. One of Lake Nona’s newest sustainability initiatives, in partnership with Berman Property Maintenance & Construction, is experimenting with autonomous mowers. You may have noticed the mowers around different

parts of the Town Center, Gateway office building, and Laureate Park. Manufactured by Husqvarna, a global leader in outdoor lawn care products, the commercial robotic mowers use a variety of sensors to navigate the grass and deliver a precise cut. The mowers are controlled by GPS and are constantly monitored, making them extremely safe and secure to use. Equipped with a smaller, light-weight blade, the robotic mowers produce a much quieter noise and use less energy compared to standard lawn mowers. A small number of mowers are currently being tested in select areas to see if they will be a fit for Lake Nona. In addition to testing the latest technology, Lake Nona’s landscaping team also leads a large-scale tree relation program to move trees that would have otherwise been recycled to new homes in Lake Nona. “A big portion of my job is making the most of our land and one of the ways we do that is by harvesting trees for relocation,” said McDermott. “We have relocated just shy of 250 mature trees that produce a lot of oxygen providing cleaner air and natural shade.” What can Lake Nona residents and visitors expect to see next? More color! “We’re currently focused on Town Center as we prepare for the Lake Nona Wave Hotel to open in the next year,” said McDermott. “There will be wide variety of trees in Town Center that create a very botanical and tropical experience.” The colorful landscaping will be woven with new public artwork and sculptures to make Town Center’s natural walkability even more engaging. SPREADING LOVE Action speaks louder than world

Many would nod their heads in agreement to the phrase, Actions speak louder than words. Not only does Sunny (Saija) Puribhat, BSN, RN-BC, CEN, live up to her name with her bright smile, she too believes in the power of action. Not just the required actions that come with her role as a Nurse but reaching beyond that. Originally from Thailand, she is especially grateful for the privileges the United States has allowed her to attain, and even more grateful for the Veterans that have protected her freedom. Nursing means more than words can depict to Sunny, it is something that runs deep in her bloodline of generations and what she has dedicated her heart and soul to for the past 30+ years. Instead of using words, Sunny has dedicated months to an art project as her action to thank Veterans for their service beyond her clinical role. Her creative mind took what was once considered trash and transformed non-contaminated medical supplies into a 3-dimensional masterpiece. Over months she collected the supplies and evolved a blank canvas into a jaw dropping work of art. “As a nurse, it is not just physical care, we strive to help holistically, to assure Veterans that we care for them. I made this artwork to show honor and

respect,” says Sunny. Veterans have truly treasured the new Emergency Department feature. Sunny has heard many words of gratitude for her talent, but she says, “It is in their [Veterans] eyes, I see that they feel proud to have the art made for them. It is my job as a nurse to lift spirits and that is why I did this. ”This is only the beginning for Sunny, she says, “Veterans deserve to be recognized, and I always knew I wanted to give back to them. My hope with this artwork is to inspire other employees to also make art to display in their clinic to honor and recognize our Veterans. ”The current pandemic safety measures limit expressions, but just as Sunny did, do not let it stop you from creating your unique way to show appreciation. She says, “I wanted to go beyond words, I wanted to give Veterans something to be proud of and that would touch them at their VA. You can say a lot of things to thank Veterans for their service, but when you actually do something to thank them it is truly honorable.”She urges the community to now more than ever “spread love by doing. ”Find your action to show support to Veterans.
