XL SOCCER WORLD BREAKS GROUND IN LAKE NONA NEW INDOOR COMPLEX COMING TO LAKE NONA Lake Nona’s active community will soon get to experience the best way to play or watch sports in Florida - in air conditioning. XL Soccer World broke ground on a 50,000-square-foot, indoor athletic complex anticipated to open the summer of 2020. The new facility will be ideal for all ages to engage in yearround play - away from the heat and rain. A variety of leagues, programs and pick-up opportunities will be available for children and adults, including the first-of-its-kind, non-residential, fulltime soccer academy lead by former Manchester United and England player, Alan Smith.

owned businesses active in Lake Nona. Earlier this year, Lake Nona announced three resident-owned businesses for the community’s Pixon apartments including Club Pilates, Rukus Cycling Studios, and Florida’s first location of Neighborhood barre™. “I’m really excited to reach the next milestone in this project,” said Ciaran McArdle, XL Soccer World CEO. “As a resident in this community, it’s an amazing opportunity to bring our first-class facilities to an active community like Lake Nona and to better serve south Orlando.”

With two, six-versus-six 4G boarded turf fields and two multisurface fields - athletes and spectators will have plenty of room to play. In addition to soccer, the fields can be used to play lacrosse, flag football, volleyball and Futsal.

XL Soccer World also joins Lake Nona’s growing Sports & Performance District including the 100-court USTA National Campus, flagship location of Drive Shack and watersports venue, Nona Adventure Park.

When visitors are off the field, they can enjoy a break in the soccer-themed pub equipped with 20 large-screen TVs airing the day’s best domestic and international soccer games. The fields and soccer pub are also available for rentals and birthday parties.

The new complex marks the company’s 10th location, second in Orlando and the first to be built from the ground up. It will be located off Narcoossee Road less than one mile south of SR 417 near Valencia Community College’s Lake Nona campus and Lake Nona Landing shopping center.

The new facility will join a growing list of other resident-

ALL OR NOTHING Written By: Kayla Torres

“I already broke my diet today, so I might as well have this cookie too.” “I’m not sure what to do at the gym, so I’m just not going to go.” “I’m going to give up all carbs!” Do any of these sound familiar? This is known as having an “all or nothing” mentality. This mentality can set you up for failure. So how do we overcome that? Acknowledging that something is better than nothing and taking baby steps. Let’s address some of the aforementioned mental blocks and how you can take a detour to keep you on your path to a healthier lifestyle. You’ve already fallen off the wagon with your diet. When it comes to living a healthier lifestyle, it should be just that. A lifestyle. Not something we get on and off. That being said, if you find yourself giving into temptations that aren’t the best for you, do your best to balance them out. So you had an extra slice of cake at a birthday party. No big deal. Just grab an extra handful or two from the veggie tray and continue to be mindful about what you’re consuming. You’re not sure what kind of exercise program to start, so you just avoid all exercise.

With so many fitness programs available to us, it’s no wonder people become overwhelmed and end up in a state of analysis paralysis. However, when it comes to being active, any movement is better than none. Instead of sitting on the couch scrolling through Pinterest for workout ideas, take a walk. While brushing your teeth, do some squats or calf raises. Turn up the music and have a dance party. Not only will you get your heart rate up a little, but sometimes that little bit of movement can motivate you to do more or even discover things you actually enjoy. Going to the extremes by going all in or cold turkey. One of the first things I ask my clients when they say they want to completely cut something out or go all in is “is that sustainable for you?”. Meaning, is it something you can do long-term or are you going to be miserable cutting out carbs the next time your family wants to do a pizza night? If you’re leaning towards the latter, then completely giving up something you indulge in from time to time is not sustainable. This goes for most things...coffee, sweets, etc…Instead of trying to go cold turkey on something you enjoy (and isn’t the worst for you) try reducing it instead. Take rice for example. Instead of not having any, try replacing half a cup of your usual cup with cauliflower rice and mix it all up. Same goes for pasta noodles with zoodles. The list goes on... The key here is to just find a small balance to start with and slowly adjust as you progress. Once you start achieving those small goals, you’ll be motivated to take on even more. One step at a time, you can reach your desired results! *Disclaimer: The statements above are just for reference. Please consult with your physician or registered dietician before starting a new fitness program or diet.*

MRI FINDINGS PHYSICAL THERAPY

Written By: Bri McCormick of Regenerative Sport Spine and Spa Why am I being referred to PT without an Xray or MRI first? We get this question a lot, and we want to take the time to explain. When you are in pain, the first step is to identify what is causing your pain. Most often, people go to the doctor and assume they are going to be referred to get an X-ray or MRI to determine what is going on. This is reasonable, but what most do not understand is that an X-ray or MRI are not good at finding the sources of pain. These images are good at showing anatomical features. What are normal anatomical features? Beyond the basic anatomy everyone has, a normal MRI can consist of findings we would consider ‘wear and tear’. It has been shown that almost everyone over the age of 25 has indications of changes at their spine (such as cartilage or disc) which does not cause pain or dysfunction. In fact, numerous studies have demonstrated that asymptomatic people, or people who have no complaints or symptoms, have significant prevalence of these changes and increase with age normally. For example, a recent study showed almost 70% of individuals without pain had disc degeneration, 50% had disc bulges, and at least 30% had other complications such as spondylolisthesis and facet complications (which are changes around the bones). So, although your MRI may indicate changes as you age, it does not guarantee the source of your back pain. More often than not, pain comes from movement or even lack of movement: ie, when you are bending, walking, standing- or when you are sleeping, sitting. Again, an MRI is good at showing anatomy, it is not going to show or indicate problems with movement. So, how do we identify problems with movement? That is where physical therapy (PT) comes in. Physical therapists have the ability to assess and measure pain patterns, functional movements, strengths and weaknesses. Regardless of what your MRI says, they are going to look at how your body moves and assess where the pain is occuring based on these movements. Once they are able to identify what is causing your pain functionally, they will have the ability to use conservative treatments to resolve your pain. Because of recent studies, many doctors have skipped the imaging and referred directly to PT in order to save time and money to limit following the anatomical ‘yellow flag’ that may or may not be the source of your problem. Seeing a PT first allows for direct treatment of your pain, in most cases, reduces the need for unnecessary and possibly misdirecting imaging and treatment which reduces cost and risk of pain management techniques such as injections and opioids. Studies show individuals who do NOT go to physical therapy as a first line treatment have:

10

CENTRAL FLORIDA MONTHLY

Higher risk of surgery: Patients are more likely to result in surgical intervention when early PT is not given. Higher risk: Patient are more likely to depend on pain management when referred to imaging before PT. These include things like injections, medications, and, in turn, opioid use and dependence risk. Higher cost: Patients spend almost $5,000 more when they are referred to imaging compared to those patients who are referred directly to PT So, things to remember: Just because you have anatomical changes on your MRI does not mean it is the source of your pain. Research indicates physical therapy is the first line of treatment in low back pain- it is more effective, costs less, and has good outcomes with less risk. MRI’s are indicated in ‘red-flag’ situations such as unresolving back pain (after conservative treatments) and in trauma situations What does all this mean for you and getting better? Your imaging typically will not affect your treatment. So, whether you have seen a doctor, had imaging or not don’t worry; go to a physical therapist because either way, they will treat your symptoms the same. You will be assessed to see your movement patterns and given treatment based on this assessment. This may include stretching, myofascial release techniques, strengthening, and functional movement training. Once you are out of pain, it will involve preventing any issue in the future. And, a good physical therapist will be able to direct you to the appropriate doctor and imaging if indicated soon into treatment if your symptoms are not resolving or not consistent with symptoms which can be treated by PT. DID YOU KNOW: Florida is Direct access state? You do not need a MD referral to attend physical therapy. Resources:

Q&A At SFPA we offer year round swimming programs for infants, toddlers, and children of all ages. We specialize in teaching the swim-float-swim sequence and transitioning children into stroke lessons. We enhance the lives of children through swimming as well as teaching children life saving skills in the water. Swimming is a fun recreational sport that teaches strength, discipline, self-esteem, and independence. We are here to provide you with the best swimming program Osceola, Orange, and Brevard County have to offer. SFPA’s mission is to become a major asset to our community of St. Cloud, FL and surrounding areas by offering swim programs promoting child health and safety. We will prosper by focusing on saving one child at a time. It is our duty to introduce children to the water by first and foremost learning to understand and respect the water while enjoying the many benefits water has on us in our lives. With drowning being the number one death in infants and toddlers, we strive to make that no longer a possibility for each and every child we meet. Our primary goal is to eradicate child drownings in our community.

1. So first things first, what made you want to teach children this amazing life skill, and how did you get into it? My love of the water began when I started water skiing at the age of 3. Teaching infant swimming came very naturally, with my background of being a junior professional water skier, a professional wakeboarder, and teaching children both water skiing and wake boarding throughout my teenage years. My interest in this profession started when I became pregnant with my now 3.5 year old, a friend introduced me to a program that taught babies life saving skills if they were to fall in the water. After researching multiple different programs and meeting with several instructors, I found none compared to Joy McGinty, the founder of Pedia Swim. I knew her passion, love, and success was the answer to teaching children these skills the proper way. With my extensive background knowledge of training in the water, I was selective to say the least. When Ariana was 2 months old, I began my 4 week long, comprehensive training with Joy. The first workday after completing my training, I started my first few kids, and well, the rest has been history. Now, I have taught over 500 children within the past 3.5 years. Starting this program of teaching children of all ages to swim has lead to some of my most proud moments and greatest accomplishments in life.

2. I hear your lessons are one on one lessons, for only 1015 minutes, for 4 weeks. Why is that? Consistency! Consistency is key to any sport, and even more important with children, who have the attention span of only 10-15 minutes. 20 lessons daily in row for 10 minutes a day is the tried and true perfect amount of time. Within this time frame, I can teach a child the life saving skills of swimming to safety and/or flipping to float to get air. We focus on good habits and muscle memory. Muscle memory is crucial. Once the body gets tired, one will begin to develop poor habits. Therefore we prevent babies from developing poor habits by stopping before exhaustion. If this still doesn’t make sense, go swim laps for 10-15 minutes and see how long you last. Swimming is a physically demanding recreation, even for the average person, let alone a child being introduced to health and fitness.

SAFETY FIRST PEDIAQUATICS Written By: Rebecca Bond

3. How early can a parent get their child into swim lessons, and what is your favorite age to start kids? 6 months. However, I say 6 months as long as the baby is crawling so quick they can slip out of sight in the matter of seconds. The earlier, the safer, especially for those of you who have a pool in your back yard. Still, my favorite age to begin is 10 months. Babies have developed their motor skills, gained plenty of strength, and adapt easiest to both swimming and floating. However, the earlier, the safer! :)

4. What is a check out and what is its purpose? A check out is a 3-4 day process. We place the child in the pool in multiple different placements in their bathing suit, then with a real diaper, a summer outfit, and a winter outfit. This is one of the most important parts of our program. It teaches the child what would happen if they were to actually fall in the pool. They almost always freak out at first, but we teach them how to relax and use their skills to catch their breath and maintain their composure in a scary situation. My goal every checkout is to find what could go wrong if that child falls in, and fix it in a controlled environment.

5. What if a child cries through the program? I get this question all the time, and well, my child cries when she can’t get her ravioli on her fork, she cries when I yell at her for running towards the road, or when she’s going to the doctor for shots. Children love to voice their opinion, and so do we. The water is very unforgiving. It doesn’t care how old you are, how cute your child is, or how loving he or she is, and our children are learning this through the program. They are learning what it’s like to really have fear of the water, something that they know could prevent them from breathing, and well it’s healthy. It’s healthy for them to have a fear of the dangers of water, to learn how to overcome those fears, and most importantly to learn safety and survival skills. Especially, when the fact of the matter is, these lessons could save their life one day. With drowning being the number one death in children, and knowing how much I love my little girl, I would totally let her cry for as long as it takes to keep her safe. The risk of crying is immeasurably outweighed by the reward of keeping our kids safe. Our job as parents is to do our best to protect our children from these known and preventable dangers. I can tell you, no one likes to hear their child cry, but honestly, only about half of my students do and almost all end up not crying towards the end of the program, as long as their parents stick with it. And heck, the majority of children that cry with me, have a blast swimming with their parents at home, and that makes me, as an instructor, truly happy.

6. Are there any lessons needed after the 4 week basic training course? Depending on the child, but most of the time, YES! Maintenance lessons are so important and necessary for most of my students. Typically, maintenance lessons are scheduled only once a week, and if you can’t make a week here and there, it won’t affect them. These lessons help maintain their skills, as well as increase their endurance, expand their lungs giving better breath control, increase the memory of the muscles to withstand longer periods of time, and much more. I have had kids stay in maintenance lessons from 10 months to 2 years old, and they

Absolutely! We have taught children with autism/asbergers, down syndrome, and cerebral palsy.

10. I hear you’re not a fan of floatation devices, can you explain why? PUTTING FLOATIES ON YOUR CHILD IS THE WORST HABIT YOU CAN CREATE for your child when it comes to learning to swim. Floatation devices train your child’s muscles to memorize that upright position at all times in the pool. When in this position, it makes it very easy for a child to get tired quickly, start engulfing water a little at a time trying to stay up, most panic, and then begin to sink. This especially can happen when a child doesn’t take the proper breath. Tragically, many kids breathe out all their air, losing any and all buoyancy in their body. This creates the position for drowning. Floaties are downright dangerous in my opinion, and in the opinions of most instructors in our field. Floatation devises give children a very false sense of security, making them believe they can swim. The water is dangerous and unforgiving. Allowing children to believe they can swim without the actual skill of swimming combined with the upright body positions is harmful to their safety.

11. What made you have to have an indoor facility versus maintaining your program out of your backyard pool and traveling? Above Photo: Business of the Year Award for A Hero for Kids now know how to swim-float-swim a 36’ pool. I also have 3 years olds able to dive 4.5’ down and come back up. These skills are developed and maintained through maintenance lessons. It’s unbelievable what this program can do for your little ones, you just have to trust it, follow the rules, and stick with it.

7. I see there are other instructors at your facility. Can you tell us more about them? Absolutely, I’ve got the perfect team. :) Annemarie Atkinson, otherwise known as Mrs. A, has been with me since the end of 2017. She is a teacher at St. Cloud Middle School for children with special needs. She is our master stroke instructor, teaches children of all ages basic training, and even teaches numerous children with special needs by adapting the program to each child’s individual special needs. Her amazing skills from the classroom and prior positions teaching swimming have transferred beautifully into our program, and she is a major asset to our team. Michael Taylor, also known as Mr. Mikey, has been with me since May of this year. He is a full-time paramedic/firefighter and I couldn’t be more at ease to have his medical knowledge with us in the water. He teaches primarily basic training and maintenance lessons, and a little bit of beginner strokes. He is a new daddy, and is a natural working with kids. Kacey Sparks, known in the pool as Ms. Kacey, is our fun, loving stroke instructor. She teaches children ages 4 and up the different stroke techniques. She works with us transitioning children from their basic training of swim-float-swim to freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly stroke. Outside of the pool, Kasey is a behavior specialist, and continuing her education in that discipline.

8. How do I know when my child is ready for stroke lessons? If your child is 4 years old, and can flawlessly swim-float-swim our entire pool, they may be a candidate. They have to be both physically and mentally ready to properly learn all of the different techniques of each style of swimming to get the most for your money.

9. Do you offer programs for children with special needs?

WEATHER! This Florida weather is so unpredictable. The rain, the storms, the cool nights that cool off the pool from October to March made it challenging to provide my students with the needed consistency for high quality swim training. I knew something needed to be done to ensure our little ones’ success with our program. So, I did a ton of research on the best, most affordable ideas, then jumped through all the city, county, and state’s hoops and fought to make it happen. In the process of opening my facility, I have learned so much, and it has helped with more than just weather. We now have changing rooms, changing tables, a public bathroom, a constant temperature of 88-90 degrees in the pool, and even a waiting room with a monitor for parents to watch their child out of sight. It’s been nothing but beneficial for my little ones to swim indoors.

12. Do you do any discounts or charity programs for children in need who can’t afford lessons? We do discounts at the beginning of every year, so everyone stay tuned. Also, all year long we give 15% off to military, first responders, and teachers for our basic training program. On top of this, we just officially started a new 501c3 non-profit organization called SFPA Lifeguardians. We are doing our best to help any and everyone, and especially those that do not have the funds to get quality swim lessons.

13. Tell us more about SFPA Lifeguardians The goal of SFPA Lifeguardians is to eradicate child drownings by funding high quality swim lessons to the community’s underprivileged children. Our mission is to create a safe environment for all children to enjoy the water by teaching children who would otherwise be unable to afford high quality training in life saving swimming skills as early as six months of age. A 2017 study conducted by the USA Swimming Foundation showed that 79 percent of kids from low-income families are at risk for drowning. Our sponsors are the solution to this tragic community issue. We will be looking for donations from local businesses to partner with us in our mission to make our community safer. Additionally, businesses will have the opportunity to fund their own employees’ children’s lessons, because, what better way to show your employees they are valued then to give their children the gift of life saving skills in the water. We have so much in store for our future with SFPA Lifeguardians and we cannot wait to share more with our community on this amazing fight against not one more child drowning.
