ARTS
CULTURE
“Juan Santos, VP of Brand Experience for Tavistock, gives our readers the inside scoop on what’s to come for the Lake Nona art scene. “
1. Can you tell us about Tavistock’s initial vision and ideas for expanding Arts & Culture throughout their communities? As master-planners, we recognize the value the arts play in shaping a community. We like to say, it’s not just the hardware – buildings, roads, and homes, it’s the software – community events, public art, and live entertainment, that truly activates a space and makes it memorable. And that’s our goal, to engage people at a higher level so they leave the places we create with a sense of belonging. The arts are also an important part of achieving Lake Nona’s mission to inspire human potential. The wellbeing of our residents, employees, and visitors is a priority that’s illustrated in everything we do from hosting a longitudinal health study to the way we design neighborhoods. Studies have shown the arts make valuable contributions to health and wellbeing, so it’s another factor we consider when planning our developments.
2. Did Tavistock have certain artists and pieces they wanted to showcase from the beginning? No, there wasn’t a specific artist we had in mind. Our first big piece, The Beacon monument, located in the Town Center was commissioned to a Lake Nona local named Jefre Manuel. Jefre also designed the Code Wall and the mirrored dog sculpture we recently unveiled. It’s been great to incorporate not only art, but to highlight one of our talented residents. But, we have pieces from artists all over the globe. The Glass House is from New York-based artist Tom Fruin and we have new pieces in our Pixon apartment building from Colombia-based graffiti artist Ledania. The priority for us is finding the best art and artist to really bring the space to life, so we try to incorporate not only different artists but different art forms from sculptures, murals, and music to digital art with projectionmapping.
3. How were the art pieces commissioned? Every development project in Lake Nona goes through Tavistock’s Design Review Committee. This group evaluates everything from architecture to landscaping to ensure that what’s being built is aligned with our vision for Lake Nona. During this process, we also evaluate how we can enhance a development with community art. The goal is that with each new building, we incorporate art. We have three ways we add art: through direct commissions from artists we want in the community, calls for entry open to anyone, and through an invitational where we invite a list of artists to develop a concept.

4. A favorite with our staff is The Glass House. What can you tell us about the artist and the story behind the art? It is beautiful piece! The Glass House artist is Tom Fruin, who is based in New York. One day our company president was in New York for business and he saw one of Tom’s pieces. He inquired about the artist and eventually connected with Tom on a piece for Lake Nona. Originally, it was meant to be a limited-time installation, but it had become such a beloved icon in the community that we eventually bought the piece from him. At the end of the day, the art belongs to the community. We have couples getting married outside of the house or families using it as a backdrop for photos and it’s an incredible feeling to know that the art is a part of lasting memories for our community.
5. There are many different forms of Art & Culture, music and theater as examples. Does Tavistock have future plans to bring these art forms into Lake Nona? Definitely. We currently host more than 1,000 community events a year, many featuring live music. We also show movies in our community parks. Our Town Center has plans for a comedy club. We believe in art in all of its forms, so we are certainly looking into different options.
6. Are there plans for future public arts installations? Yes, we committed to expanding our community art program and look forward to incorporating many more pieces as Lake Nona continues to grow.
7. The Orlando Museum of Art is rumored to be moving to Lake Nona. Any updates you can provide? How do you feel the museum would impact the area? Access to the arts is so important and plays an essential role in shaping the community whether that’s incorporating art in public spaces or displaying it in a museum. We are big supporters of the Orlando Museum of Art. They’ve embarked on a long-term initiative to enhance the museum experience leading up to their 2024 centennial and we’re excited to see what’s ahead.
8. It’s obvious that Tavistock is committed to continuing a driving force in defining Arts & Culture in Lake Nona. What are some of the next steps? We’re in the process of working on the next phase of community art pieces that will come to Lake Nona. A major project we’ve been working on for the past few years, Lake Nona Town Center, is getting ready for its next big phase of development and we’ve got some exciting new installations planned.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT 1. Tell our readers how you first started out in the salon business.
4. Now you’ve opened your 2nd salon in Harmony. Why Harmony?
I’ve always been the person to be well dressed and groomed. Since I was in middle school I started cleaning my edges with a razor in between haircuts, when I was in high school I started cutting my own hair. I used to do it every 3 days and because I was never hairy, a friend of mine asked me if I go to the barbershop often and where “since they such a good job” and I told him that I cut my own hair, and just like that I acquired my first client which was my best friend. Then I started cutting my brother’s hair and soon other friends until I had a business going in the garage of my house. I loved the freedom of being able to make as much money as I wanted and to be able to connect with people and make them feel good. That was what made me fall in love with the craft and realize that this is what I wanted to do forever.
Being that there’s not a barbershop around that offers the services and quality we have there’s been a lot of clients requesting to go to Harmony, among other places, but the opportunity to be in Harmony came unexpectedly and it made complete sense. When the opportunity was presented to me I didn’t have to think about it much because to me it looked like the same opportunity I had when I bought my first barbershop at 20 years old, only this time I have a lot more experience, I have a brand and recognizable name that when people hear it they already know that Class A Salon & Spa stands for professionalism, quality and great experience. Being in harmony has been a great experience because we are not only bringing great service to them but the people in Harmony bring so much joy and kindness to us and we are so happy to be there.
2. Have you always wanted to own your own salon?
5. So the salon has only been open for business for a month since you took over but already, business is looking great. To what do you attribute your success?
I’m the kind of person that if I’m going to do something, I do it all the way. When I realized that cutting hair was what I wanted to do I quickly started having thoughts and vision of me owning my own barbershop and since I always go “all the way” obviously I thought big. So I had this vision of owning the best barbershop and salon around. 3. What was your vision for your first salon? My vision for my first location was to create a professional space and offer the best quality haircuts and service around, not only from the finished product but also the first impression when you walk in to the shop. I wanted to wow from the moment you walk in to the moment you see yourself in the mirror after the haircut. I was 20 years old when I bought my very first barbershop and I was very inexperienced in business and management. It was a challenge to enforce my vision in the business even though there were lots of improvement from the previous owner and we gained a lot more clientele since I took over. We relocated that barbershop and I was able to put my full potential and vision into it and now we been open 4 years in my second location in St. Cloud. We’ve been really successful, we’re busy every day and I have a great team there.
When I took over the Salon I came only with the intentions to succeed with the same vision I’ve always had. I owe my success to my team that have been executing and following the vision with excellence since day one, and obviously the people from Harmony and anyone that has come through our Class A Salon & Spa doors and supported us. 6. There are many salons throughout St.Cloud/Kissimmee/Harmony. What sets your salon apart from the rest? I’ve taken my time through the years to study and understand what people like and want and added other things that nobody has to set Class A Barbers and Class A Salon & Spa apart from other barbershops and salon. 7. Can you tell us about new products and services available at your salon? We wanted to make sure there was something for everyone so we added a variety of services. Right now our team consists of a hairdresser, barber, nail technician, masseuse, and a skin care specialist. All of our services are available to men and woman. Our professional team is always coming up with innovative techniques and services to offer to our clients. 8. Where do you see yourself and both your salons in the future? What are your goals? Like I mentioned earlier I started Class A Barbers when I was 20 years old with huge plans and I’ve came a long way. One of my dreams was to open a salon where men and woman can come and now I have just that. The recognition and reputation that Class A Barbers has today are the reasons for it’s success in Harmony. I want to continue offering great services so we continues getting recognized by people who not only want to look good, but look Class A good.

“You feel safe, you feel like the community is family. Home is where the heart is and this is where our hearts are.” - Anique on living in Vista Lakes
The Vista Lakes neighborhood sits near three main hubs of travel in Central Florida. The 417, 408 and 528 highways all run in the nearby area making it extremely convenient to get around. It is also home to a vibrant community of diverse families. Cyndi Wagner is one of the many people who are proud to call Vista Lakes home. She has lived in the neighborhood with her two kids for a little over two years. She admits that the ease of travel was one of the features that drew her to the area. “It was prime location for travel for work,” says Cyndi, a lead fitness coach for Orangetheory Fitness. She began by training members of Orangetheory, now, she trains other fitness professionals that lead classes there. “I was intrigued by the impact they had in the area,” says Cyndi, “I got into it out of pure passion for the industry. But the more I helped people the more I wanted to help people.” She has now moved into a role on the corporate side of the company. Cyndi helps build and grow Orangetheory studios all around Orlando. She enjoys developing the fitness professionals in each studio, not only in the gym, but in helping them lead better lives outside of it as well. When she’s not helping develop fitness professionals, Cyndi is spending time with her two amazing kids. Her son, Logan, is seven, and her daughter, Athena, is three and a half. Logan loves martial arts and is working towards a black belt at Championship Martial Arts. Cyndi says it has helped him develop his confidence both in and out of the studio. Every night Cyndi and the kids take a walk around their neighborhood. They live near a pond that’s a beautiful place to watch the sun set. They enjoy eating “sunset” popsicles every night and spending at least an hour of family time enjoying the local parks. Cyndi also loves having so many options nearby for things to do. One of their favorite local spots, believe it or not, is the Vista Lakes Publix. Cyndi swears it is the best Publix in the entire area. It’s filled with friendly faces and they love going there to catch up with everyone. The family also loves the fabulous restaurants like Pasquale’s. They say that it is a wonderful spot for excellent Italian food.
One of the things that Cyndi loves most about Vista Lakes is the cozy, comfortable feeling she gets. “It’s a very family-oriented area,” says Cyndi, “there are so many familiar faces around. There are lots of mom and pop shops. You definitely get warm feeling from the closeness of the people in the community.” Cyndi is proud to raise her two kids as a single mom and she knows there are a lot of other hard-working single parents in the area. “I want them to see the strength in what they’re doing and know that it’s possible to raise great kids as a single parent.” The Peppers family was also drawn to Vista Lakes for its convenience. Anique and her husband Josh graduated from UCF and decided to plant roots in the Vista Lakes community in 2010. Fast forward to now, and they love the community even more. They live in the Warwick neighborhood of Vista Lakes. Anique is originally from Boca Raton and Josh is from Tennessee, but they fell in love with the area and decided to stay. Anique works in the mental health field. She loves her work and helping others find peace in their lives. The work is demanding, but Anique finds balance by enjoying time with friends and family. She loves to go to the movies and spend time with their daughter, Aminna, who is six years old. Aminna goes to Faith Christian Academy which is five minutes from their home. The family says that they love the convenience and the great foundation she gets from her education there. Josh has played professional basketball in Japan for the last 12 years. This unfortunately means he is gone for six months out of the year. Anique says it can be tough but it’s something they have grown accustomed to. When Josh is home he’s got lots of free time to spend with the family. Some of their favorite family outings are fishing and going to the beach. They hop on the 528 and they are at the beach in 20 minutes. When Josh is home they love to travel as a family, too. Jamaica and its beautiful beaches is one of their top destinations. “Nothing beats an island,” says Anique. They love the activities in the Warwick neighborhood. Every year for Valentine’s Day the neighborhood decorates their mailboxes, it’s a fun competition that brings everyone together. On Halloween, they set up a haunted house and at Christmas time everyone bakes cookies and visits each other’s houses. They love the tight-knit nature of the community. The Peppers family also loves the friendly people at the Vista Lakes Publix! Anique says she passes three Publix stores on the way home from work, but that’s the only one she will stop at. They love the local restaurants as well, Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse is their absolute favorite local place. Everyone there knows their names and the family says the food is delicious. Anique says it’s the atmosphere in the community that they love the most. “You feel safe, you feel like the community is family. Home is where the heart is and this is where our hearts are.” They feel like this is the only pace they want to be at this important time in their lives. The Peppers family says they are proud to call the Vista Lakes area home. Vista Lakes consists of fourteen neighborhoods. Vista Lakes has a Residents’ Club, Fitness Center, five pools, two lighted tennis courts, four parks, a soccer field, a Little League-sized baseball/softball field, a lakeside trail, boat docks and a fishing pier accommodating many activities and events. The community truly has something for everyone. It’s conveniently located near the airport and close to all of the attractions in Central Florida.

Since starting with Fusilier Realty Group he has been very successful in both residential and commercial real estate having a career volume of $14M in his first 24 months. "I think the most rewarding part about real estate is helping someone, buyer or seller, achieve their goals. Helping someone close on their first home or adding an investment property to their portfolio is extremely rewarding -- for us, it's nice to close a sale, but for the buyer or seller -- it can be completely life-changing. Also, i love getting to meet and work with all different types of people - it keeps things interesting.
