You may like your neighbours, but do you want to spend every outdoor event with them? Open backyards mean everything you do is the sideshow for your neighbours. While they may be friends, they don’t need to see your every move. Privacy fences are great ways to give your yard more seclusion.

What usually goes up, might work best sideways? Building your fence with horizontal planks may seem a little odd. Over the past few years more and more homeowners are looking for different ways to fence in their backyards. Closely spaced horizontal boards are a creative way to make your space private. However, building a horizontal fence is not for the new inexperienced builder. There are many challenges with creating such a structure. There are also many ways to design the fence. If you are considering the move from vertical to horizontal, check with an expert in the field for more information.

Metal fences give a completely different look to a space. The metal partitions do not leave any spaces for prying eyes. Corrugated metal creates a modern looking fence. Most pair wood posts with the metal partitions. Because the sheets of metal are flat, it leaves room for any shelves or other decorative items to be added on the inside. It gives the homeowners a chance to be more creative with their space.

There is absolutely nothing private about chain link fences. While it can keep in any pets, it most certainly does not keep out any nosey neighbours. If you are not in the market to build an entirely new fence, then there are things you can do to the chain link fence. Consider adding cedar planks to the existing fence. Make sure to establish a budget before heading out. Cedar can be more expensive than other woods. Bamboo is a great way to cover up a chain link fence and create a private yard. It is also cheaper than many other types of fencing and is an environmentally friendly way of fencing in your property. If you live ‘green’ than there are more natural ways to fence in your yard. Cedar trees are great plants for privacy. Be sure to buy plants that have been grown to a good height. Cedars will not grow dramatically in the first season they are planted. They are working on a root system. If you prefer to add privacy that has flare then consider Forsythia. These bushes grow to be four to six feet tall and they are hardy and can take to Ontario winters. They require full sun and well-drained soil.  In the spring the Forsythia sprouts beautiful yellow flowers. They are one of the faster growing plants that will add beauty and privacy to any yard. Boxwood is a common privacy hedge. It comes in 30 different species with the tallest reaching 10 feet. The bush has been a favourite hedging for decades.

This Month IN HISTORY September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month • Have you recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer? • Are you in the process of exploring your treatment options? • Have you had treatment and now are dealing with side effects? • Are you a prostate cancer survivor willing to share your experience? PCCN - Newmarket Prostate Cancer Support Group The primary objective of the Newmarket Prostate Cancer Support Group is to give participants a forum where they may compare experiences and discuss matters of interest relating to prostate cancer. At most meetings, a prominent member of the medical profession or another person with knowledge or experience with cancer speaks on some phase of detection, diagnosis, staging, and/or treatment of prostate cancer, or other related topics. Members of the Support Group are typically prostate cancer survivors in all stages of the disease, their families, health care professionals and all interested and concerned parties. The Newmarket Prostate Cancer Support Group meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month with the exception of July and August when there are no meetings. Their meetings are held at the Newmarket Seniors Meeting Place located at 474 Davis Drive in Newmarket, ON. The typical meeting format has a meet and greet session starting at 6:30

pm with the formal meeting starting at 7 pm and running to 9 pm. They have presenters at most meetings and allocate 45 – 60 minutes for their formal presentation, followed by a nominal 10 minute refreshment break and another 20 - 40 minute question period prior to their wrap-up. Even though this support group is situated in Newmarket, their service goes beyond their location. They have members from Thornhill, Richmond Hill, Stouffville, Uxbridge, Aurora, East & West Gwillimbury, Keswick, Bradford, Georgina, and beyond. The next closest support group is in Markham, Orillia or Barrie. Meetings provide an opportunity for people to talk in complete confidence with prostate cancer survivors. Depending on the topic, there are normally 15 to 40 people in attendance. There is usually someone there who has had the treatment you might be considering. Prostate cancer is a couples’ disease. During the meet and greet and the refreshment break gives people the opportunity to talk directly to the men and/or spouses who have been on a similar journey. At meetings when a formal presentation is not provided, they run a peer-to-peer session for a more in-depth discussion. If you are interested in getting more information, they also publish a monthly newsletter. The newsletter is normally sent out the week before their next meeting to introduce the speaker and/or format of their upcoming meeting. The newsletter also recaps and summarizes the presentation from the previous meeting. For additional information and/or access to back copies of newsletters visit the website at www.newmarketprostatecancer.com. The Newmarket Prostate Cancer Support Group does not recommend products, treatment, modalities, medications or physicians. However, all available information is freely shared.

Puppy Love Selecting a breed of dog to bring into your home should involve several considerations. Different breeds tend to have certain instinctive characteristics as a result of their breeding, so you should evaluate your lifestyle and needs to choose a dog that’s a good fit for you and your family. Here is a brief look at the traits of some of the more popular dog breeds: Labrador Retriever - (size: males, 65-80 pounds, females, 55-70 pounds) The Lab is a strong and athletic dog. Its coat is short, straight, and very thick. The breed is known to be kind and friendly, loyal, playful, people-oriented, and hardworking. Labs are eager to please, gentle, and very patient with children. Although they tend to bark protectively, they may not be great guard dogs, due to their friendly nature. Yorkshire Terrier - (size: up to 7 pounds) Yorkies have an active nature. They are independent, yet very devoted. Despite their small size, they tend to be very quick at protecting their families. Yorkies are playful, inquisitive, and friendly. Golden Retriever - (size: males, 65-75 pounds, females 60-70) Golden retrievers are very playful, extremely friendly, reliable, and devoted. They thrive on human contact. Due to their high energy levels, they require a fair amount of exercise, including daily walks, running and play time.

Beagle - (size: 18-30 pounds) Beagles make great family companions and bond very well with children. They will tend to bond with the entire family rather than one family member. They are bright, friendly, and outgoing. Due to their highly developed sense of smell and their inquisitive nature, they tend to roam. Their high energy and stamina mean that exercise is a must. Beagles do not drool and don’t tend to have a doggy odour, and shedding is minimal. Boxer - (size: males, approx. 70 pounds, females approx. 60) Boxers are playful and fun-loving with family and friends, but are generally wary of strangers, making them excellent guard dogs. They are loyal and intelligent but can tend to be stubborn. Shih Tzu - (size: on average 9-16 pounds) The Shih Tzu personality is docile, friendly, affectionate, and intelligent. Shih Tzus tend to thrive on attention, both adult & child. Labradoodle – Because this is a crossbred dog, created by crossing the Labrador Retriever and the Standard, Miniature or Toy Poodle, the size, weight and temperament will vary. Although dogs offer unconditional love and ensure you get out to take walks every day, the decision to own a dog requires careful consideration. Before you decide on a breed, research 2 or 3 breeds total that seem to suit your lifestyle.

Is there a drum set in your house? Has your child taken up the Baritone? Perhaps you have a toddler or a television viewer that loves to crank up the volume. No matter what the noise, you may think that you will never have any peace even in your own home. Think again. There are ways to help cut down on the amount of sound that is bellowing through your hallways. Sound waves love hard surfaces. They can dance endlessly around a barren room. Harder flooring like hardwood, laminate and tile are perfect for sound travel. While wood may be esthetically pleasing, carpet is a much better sound absorber. Throw rugs are a nice touch on a wood floor. They add colour while helping to calm the bouncing sound waves. If you are carpeting an entire room, consider using a thicker underpad for more noise absorption.   Bare walls and windows are also great sound conductors. If your teen’s drum set is in the unfinished basement, the cymbals will love the effect the cement surroundings make. An unfinished room has a lot of potential to become a soundproof room. If you are working on finishing the basement so the aspiring rock band in the house has a quieter place to play, it’s not too late to add a few changes to the products you intend to use.

When insulating a new room look for products that are designed to help reduce sound travel. There are types of insulation on the market that are made to help reduce noise. Drywall is also a good sound barrier, but it may not be enough when it comes to the ceiling. It you are considering a drop ceiling, there are a variety of tiles that offer a sound barrier. Remember that if you wish to use hard flooring, add a throw rug. If there are windows, consider hanging curtains to help reduce outside sounds and absorb inside noise. Check for leaks around the windows. The cracks will not only let in drafts, but they will also let in outside noises. Try resealing windows or using weather stripping to fill in any holes.

Imagine your home, totally organized!

If your renovations or remodeling involve a change in windows, look for the products that will reduce noise. Double-glazed windows are not only efficient, but they help reduce sound transmission. There are triple-glazed windows on the market, but they reduce noise about the same as their double-glazed cousins. When decorating, think plush. Adding a big comfy couch or well-padded chairs will help reduce the amount of noise in the room. Foot rests and lots of pillows will also add a fashionable touch. Consider hanging pictures or fabric panels on the walls. Tapestries were once a necessity in a castle. They helped reduce the amount of noise while warming the room. Try adding a little Medieval flare to your home.Â

Your home, my studio or your place of business! Free consultations. Corporate programs available.

Back to School You have been waiting for this day since the day your child was born. The first day of school is a passage into the next step of childhood. It’s a passage for your child as much as it is for you. It’s never easy to watch your child head off to school for the first time. It’s not easy for your child either. Have you done enough to prepare for this day? What should you have done differently? Everyone finds transition a little easier if they have been prepared. Preschool programs are great for preparing your little one for school. They often follow a school-like routine and introduce your young one to circle time and other school activities. Most programs are only a couple of hours long, which makes it a nice short introduction to a structured routine. Before your youngster heads to school walk through what the day will be like for him/her. Talk about circle time, arts and crafts, playground time and any lunch routines. Depending upon the age of your child, there may be naptime included in the routine. Answer any questions your child may have as calmly and positively as you can despite any anxieties you may be feeling as well.  When the big day comes don’t exaggerate how wonderful your child’s day will be. Keep the conversation positive. Try to get to the school a little earlier so your youngster has more time

to get used to his/her surroundings. Look for things that might be familiar to your child. It may help with the anxiety later on in the day. Don’t sneak out while your child is busy. It may make your child’s anxiety even worse. Be direct and let him/her know that you cannot stay but that you will be there as soon as they are done for the day. Despite your own anxious feelings, try to remain positive and calm. For the older kids starting school can bring about anxiety for a different reason. If your child is already dreading math class or another subject, it could mean that they need some extra help. Do you recall crying sessions with your child while you attempted to help him/her with a subject? Hiring a private tutor is an option for students who are struggling. It is also an option for those students who are only encountering issues because of their confidence in a subject. There are companies that offer tutoring services for a number of subjects. When contacting one be sure to ask what qualifications the tutors have and how long they have been studying the subjects. Ask for references and find out any feedback about the company or the tutor. Find out how many times a week your child will need to come and work out a schedule. Ask if they allow make-up sessions for those times you are not able to attend.

Senior BEAT Avoid Golf Injuries There isn’t a golfer on the planet that would say that golf is the most calming sport. How many 5-irons have seen the side of a tree out of anger? It is a very precise sport that takes patience and mental strength. It also takes the proper execution of every movement. That is not a small feat. It involves repetitive swinging and in stances that may not be what your muscles are used to. Each swing can take a physical toll on a golfer. Before heading out to the links, take time to remember your body, especially your muscles. Practice makes perfect, or in golf it at least makes things somewhat better. It’s very easy to be injured while taking a swing in a golf game. Take time to find your swing. Try consulting with a professional who can help you find the best position and the safest way to swing and not injure yourself. Practice a few shot before heading out onto the green. Don’t forget to stretch. Stretching is a great way to limber up and give your muscles a head start.  Making your way around the course with a heavy golf bag can add a lot of unnecessary stress on your muscles and on the rest of your body. Invest in a golf cart to help you carry your bag. There are push or pull carts that take the stress out of carrying around a bag. Motorized golf carts are also available to rent. Keep in mind that using the golf cart will mean less walking. One of the physical benefits of golf is the nice walk through the course. The right equipment will make or break your day. Proper footwear plays a very important part in the wellbeing of every golfer. Not only is the comfort of your feet important, but shoes that have the proper support will also mean less wear and tear on your knees and back. Staying hydrated on hot days is really a given. It’s important to make up for any water loss you experience in the hot sun. Even during the cooler days, it is vitally important to drink enough. Water is the best beverage to help cool you down and regenerate your muscles. It also helps decrease the chance of experiencing fatigue on the course.  Warming up is very important before heading out, and cooling down is just as important. Plan doing a few more appropriate stretches when you have finished your round of golf. Your will find you are less stiff and sore the next day.  If you are an avid golfer, your body is receiving the same treatment a few times a week. For any consistent issues consult a Chiropractor or a Physiotherapist. They are able to help straighten out any issues and lead you to a safer way to golf.

“Finally Free from Arthritis Pain Without Drugs and Harmful Side Effects” Living with arthritis pain can affect every part of your life. It keeps you from enjoying the good things in life – time with grandkids, playing golf, even working in the yard. It would be nice to get out of bed – just one morning – without pain. Every time you try and push through the pain…like standing or walking for a long period of time…you pay for it for the next 2-3 days with even more pain.

Do you have any of the these Arthritic problems? • • • • • •

Osteoarthritis Rheumatoid arthritis Bursitis/tendonitis Degenerative joint disease Lumbar disc problems Aching pain in the arms or legs

Pain Pills Are Not The Answer Do you remember the Vioxx scandal? It was a medication designed to relieve arthritis pain…but like all drugs, it had side effects. After years of use worldwide, the makers withdrew it from the market because of the overwhelming evidence it caused heart attacks and strokes. There’s a time to use pain medications, BUT not before seeking a natural way to correct the CAUSE of the problem! Ask yourself … after taking all these pain medications…maybe for years…are you any better off?

Pain Is Not Just ‘Old Age’

Have you had one doctor after another telling you this is just the natural process of the body getting older - that you should expect to have arthritis. Sure, if you don’t take care of your damaged joints now, as you get older they will be worse (which is why you shouldn’t wait any longer to see if I can help you.) However, old age is not the cause of your arthritis. I’ll venture to say all 360 joints in your body are the same age, yet arthritis and joint degeneration has not affected every one of them – only your previously injured joints that never healed properly. My name is Dr. Joshua Nikkanen, owner of Crossroads Chiropractic. Over the past 14 years since we’ve opened the doors, I’ve seen hundreds of people come in suffering with arthritis and leave the office pain-free.

18 | September 2016 www.TheMonthAhead.ca

I’ve made it my mission in practice to help those suffering with chronic pain like you.

“I only wished I had found you sooner”

I hear this too often, so I decided to do something about it and run this ad. Just call before September 20th and you’ll get my “Arthritis Evaluation” for only $35. • • • •

An in-depth consultation about your arthritis where I will listen…really listen. A complete nerve, muscle and spinal exam to find the “cause” of your problem. A full set of specialized x-rays to look for joint degeneration (arthritis)… (NOTE: These would normally cost you at least $100). A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so I can show you how to fix the problem.

I’ll answer all your questions about chiropractic and arthritis pain. The appointment will not take long at all and you won’t be sitting in a waiting room all day either. To take me up on this special offer, you must call before September 20, 2016. Call today…Phone 905-830-1146 In addition to that, here’s what some of the top medical researchers had to say about chiropractic… “Manipulation [chiropractic adjustments], with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.”– British Medical Journal “Chiropractor’s manipulation of the spine was more helpful than any of the following: traction, massage, biofeedback, acupuncture, injection of steroids into the spine and back corsets, and ultrasound.” -- Stanley Bigos, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery

Feel the Improvement – and Say “Yes” to Life Again

With my “Arthritis Evaluation”, we can find the problem and then correct it. Think of how you could feel in just a few short weeks. See and feel your life change for the better. Start your body on the way to pain-free, normal living. Feel tight joints rest, relax, free up. Feel muscles tied in knots become more supple. Feel strength in your muscles increase. As you begin to see motion returning to your joints, you’re preventing and reducing chances of disability and a crippling future. You’re playing golf again -- hitting longer drives, smoother putts, and lower scores…without pain.

Arthritis can be successfully treated. Healthy, pain-free living should be yours.

Are you suffering from arthritis pain? If so, relief may be easier than you think.

“I have seen with my own eyes how patients with arthritis, crippled for years, have walked out of my office with more spring in their step, better strength and less pain!” – says Joshua

Nikkanen, D.C reporting on his clinic in Newmarket.

Call anytime between the hours of 7:30 am and 6:00 pm Monday through Thursday. Tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for the Special Arthritis Evaluation before September 20, 2016.We can get started with your consultation, exam and x-rays as soon as there’s an opening in the schedule. Our office is called Crossroads Chiropractic and you can find us at 45 Eagle Street in Newmarket, just 2 doors east of Yonge St. on the north side. I look forward to helping you get rid of your pain so you can start living a healthier, more joyful life.

Sincerely, Dr. Joshua Nikkanen, D.C. P.S. The only real question to ask you is this… Life’s too short to live in pain like this. Call today 905-830-1146 and soon I’ll be giving you the green light to have fun again.

Take me up on my offer and call today 905-830-1146.

HOEDOWN 2016 Presented by Magna International Inc.

Hoedown has supported hundreds of charities, non-profits, and community groups over the years and has raised over 9 million dollars. This year is no exception, as 15 deserving organizations will share the charitable proceeds of the event. The fundraising success is largely due to the nationally celebrated talent recruited each year to rock the Hoedown stage, as well as the full Texas-style barbeque dinner each attendee receives, the Prospector’s Raffle, with $100,000 in prizing, and the foot stompin’ country fun! Hoedown has expanded to two nights – September 16th and September 17th.

MONTHLY ADULT COOKING CLASSES

Discovering Your Ancestry By Samantha Forani, Graduate of McMaster University It is hard keeping track of your ancestry and not everyone sees the importance in knowing about past family members or genealogy. Many generations ago, families determined almost everything about their members; where they would work, their education, who they would marry, etcetera. These days, in many households, family and genealogy do not weigh so heavily on our lives, and it may not seem as important to learn about your great, great aunt or uncle. However, there are many beneficial reasons to know about your ancestors, including genetic factors, health problems, or family history. Many people do not know where they came from. They may know where their grandparents or even great grandparents came from, but what about before that? I only learned recently that I am part Irish. This is something I never knew because I did not know my grandmother’s parents were from Ireland. While this may seem like an insignificant fact, it has sparked my interest in Irish history. Of course, as I am half British this has started a bit of conflict given the history between those two countries (if you do not know what I am talking about maybe do a quick Google search). There is also the possibility of discovering family that you do not know you have. There are many websites available that can actually assist you in finding extended family members who live around the world.

Another reason to look into your family history is for genetic reasons. Learning about past health problems or diseases that perhaps a great grandparent had can be beneficial to your overall wellbeing. It can encourage you to keep your blood sugar low or eat healthier to avoid potential heart disease or other sicknesses. It is also possible for certain ailments to skip generations, meaning if your grandparents had a disease, it can skip your parent’s generation and you could end up at risk of getting that same ailment. By looking into your ancestry, you can also learn about the people themselves. Learning about who you come from can be fascinating in itself. You could be a descendant of medieval royalty or another historical figure. Through research, a friend of mine discovered that Shakespeare was her great, great, great (times however many generations) uncle. You may not believe it but this could happen to you too. Perhaps you’re a distant relative of the British Monarchy, or just maybe, you are the great, times 50, grandchild of John A. Macdonald. It may seem like a stretch, but why is it not possible? You never know who you will find in your family tree until you take the time to research. I personally do not know anything past my great grandparents on either side of my family, but even just writing this article has sparked my interested to start looking. We should all know more about where we came from.

Recipe of the Month Brie, Pear and Prosciutto Pizza

(NC) - Ontario pears are ripe for picking. Who needs delivery? Keep some pizza dough on hand to make a sweet and savoury meal the whole family will love.

Ingredients: • 30 mL all-purpose flour • 4 portions frozen pizza dough, thawed overnight in refrigerator • 200 mL brie, cut into thin slices • 2 Bosc pears, cored and thinly sliced • 30 mL olive oil • 160 mL grated mozzarella cheese • 4 slices of prosciutto, finely chopped • 120 mL finely chopped parsley

Directions: 1. Position racks in top and bottom thirds of oven. Preheat to 425F. Lightly spray 2 baking sheets with oil. 2. Dust a counter with flour. Roll out each portion of dough into 8 inch-wide rounds. Top with brie slices, then pear slices. Brush tops of pizza and crust with oil. Sprinkle with mozzarella. 3. Bake in top and bottom thirds of oven, switching sheets halfway through, until bottom of crust is golden and cheese is melted, 20 to 25 minutes. Sprinkle with prosciutto and parsley. Recipe courtesy of Walmart Live Better. For more recipes or inspiration on how to incorporate fresh produce, like Ontario pears, into mealtime, head to www.walmart.ca/recipecentre.

Prep the bowl you are using as your mold. Do this by spraying the outside of the bowl with cooking spray, then covering it with plastic wrap. This protects the bowl and prevents the leaves from adhering to it. Turn the prepped bowl upside down. Begin placing the leaves on to the bowl and “painting” them with Mod Podge. Use A LOT and paint it on thick to make sure it fully saturates the leaves. Continue “painting” on the leaves until you have the designs you want. Make sure there are no gaps in the leaves and that the entire bowl is covered. Put another coat of Mod Podge over all the leaves that cover the bowl. Allow it to dry overnight. The next day gently separate the leaves from the plastic wrap. The bowl mold should fall off nicely and leave you with a sturdy leaf bowl. Place it on your fall table and fill it with small items such as candy.
