Helping Newmarket Stay On Their Feet for Over 30 Years!

FOOT PAIN? DO YOUR FEET HURT? “When your feet hurt, you hurt all over” is an old adage which remains true over the years. Whether your discomfort is due to something as simple as a corn or callous, or from a prominent bunion or hammertoe, the pain can be debilitating. At the Podiatry office of Stephen A. Haber and Allen Frankel, Doctors of Podiatric Medicine, we have been treating painful feet for a combined total of over 70 years, helping patients walk in comfort.

Come And Meet Our Friendly Team

Common Foot Myths

Some of the many treatments provided in the office include: *FAR INFRA-RED LASER WITH BIOMAGNETIC WAVE treatments can help reduce inflammation and discomfort. This treatment combines the two modalities and causes no discomfort while helping the foot to heal. *ORTHOPEDIC SHOES for feet that do not fit shoes that are “off the shelf” from the shoe store. *LASER TREATMENTS for fungal nails.

*SHOCKWAVE THERAPY (ESWT) for heel pain, plantar fasciitis, and Achilles tendon pain. Studies have shown that ESWT helps 80-85% of patients who have this treatment performed on the painful area once per week for 3 weeks. *PRESCRIPTION ORTHOTIC INSOLES are used to improve foot function and increase stability of the foot. They are not arch supports. These custom made insoles can help alleviate foot and heel pain, fatigue and achiness in the legs, knee pain, some forms of back pain (mainly low back) and help to improve balance. The orthotic insoles help by realigning the position of the foot to the leg and the foot to the floor. In our office we use a 3D Scanner technology in order to take an accurate impression of a patient’s feet (non-weight bearing with the feet placed in a corrected alignment).

*IN-OFFICE SURGERY: When conservative options do not suffice, the foot conditions listed below can be treated by permanent correction, often with minimal discomfort: *Bunions and Hammertoe deformities * Ingrown toenails *Neuromas (pinched nerves) *Plantar warts *Ganglion and Cyst removal *Permanent correction of corns and callouses

Corns and callouses are skin problems. Corns and callouses are actually bone problems caused by excessive pressure on the bone under the hard skin. Over the counter treatments will reduce the hard skin but as long as the pressure continues, the corns and callouses will quickly return.

Bunions and hammertoes are caused by tight shoes. While tight shoes can exacerbate the formation and pain of bunions and hammertoes, they mainly form due to a weak foot structure and faulty foot function. Heredity also plays a part in this but there is no gene for a bunion. You can inherit a similar foot structure and therefore have the corresponding foot function to cause similar foot problems in families.

Heel spurs are very painful. In most cases of heel pain the spur (if even present) is not painful. The pain occurs from the plantar fascial tissue pulling excessively and its fibres tearing where it inserts at the heel bone. Treatment is aimed at stopping the tearing which in turns causes the pain to resolve.

All the above procedures are done in office, under local anesthesia, within 1-2 hours with patients going home immediately afterwards.

WE ALSO DO: • Prescription Orthotic Insoles • Shockwave Treatment For Plantar Fasciitis And Heel Pain/Achilles Tendinitis • Laser Treatments For Foot Pain, Fungal Nails, Warts • Sports Medicine • Diabetic And General Foot Care

Fantastic Fireworks

Independent & Trusted Investment Advice

Mary Rourke

Look up! Soon there will be a splash of colour up high! In Ontario, there are four statutory holidays that bring out spectacular fireworks displays in the night sky. Canada Day is one of them. Many cities across Ontario will participate, but many residential pyro-technicians create smaller scale shows for their own families and friends.

If you are considering putting on your own fireworks display, there are a few safety tips to consider.

905-503-4100

Follow the Law. Check your town or city for rules and regulations surrounding fireworks displays. Many regulate where you are able to use fireworks and some even restrict the time of day. Some only allow residential fireworks during the four statutory holidays.

Keep spectators at a safe distance away and always supervise children. Douse the flames. Always have a bucket of sand, water and a fire extinguisher on hand to put out any fires and cool off hot fireworks. Protect Yourself. Those setting the display should wear protective eye wear and gloves. Do not wear clothing that is flammable. Make sure to light the fireworks at arm’s length and move away from the display once it is active. Never attempt to re-light a firework that has not gone off and never hold a lit device in your hand.

Sparkling Fun. Sparklers are a lot of fun, especially for kids. Do not let small children handle sparklers unless they are being closely supervised. Remember that tiny sparks can catch onto clothing and ignite, so exercise extreme caution at all times if you have little ones handling these items. When the flame is out, make sure to put the used sparkler into a bucket of sand or water because they remain hot for a long time. Bring your flashlight. Not only is this needed to find the perfect spot to place your fireworks, it’s a useful tool to help you pick up any garbage or burnt out fireworks once the fun is over. You’ll then be able to keep your community clean and safe!

Summer Social Networking With kids out of school, they will be playing with friends, hanging at the park and they will spend a portion of their time online. While you spend time at work, your kids may be sharing their fun, summer experiences on social networks.

numbers will make it harder for others to figure them out. There will always be the temptation to share passwords with their friends. Have conversations with your children about privacy and the reasons why they should never give out their passwords.

You know you’ve talked to your children about being safe online, but are you sure they are practicing it?

Teach your children how to recognize cyber bullying. Make sure they know what to do if they encounter a bully. Kids must understand that they may not be able to see or hear the bully, but a cyber bully is no different than a playground bully. Monitor the sites your children visit. How can you tell if your child is being cyber bullied? You may notice some of the following signs: sadness, anxiety, pessimism, difficulty concentrating, insomnia, loss of appetite and irritability. If you see these changes in your child, consult your doctor.

Socializing online is going to happen. It is an acceptable way to engage in conversation in today’s society. There is a way you can help your children stay safe while they keep up with society.   Do your homework. Check out any sites that your child may have asked about joining. Take a look at how easy it is to ‘unfriend’ or block any unwanted content. Go through the privacy settings. Are they going to protect your child? Look for social networking sites that have the TRUSTe seal. There are several sites for tweens and younger kids that actively screen online content and ensure an appropriate experience for your children.

There are some beneficial sites that can help your child continue to learn over the summer months. These social sites offer safe networking while creating a learning environment. Some of these sites have students connecting with teachers. It’s a great way to keep your child thinking about their studies during the two-month break.

Make sure your child signs onto a site with a username that doesn’t match their real name or have them choose a nickname that is unknown to anyone else but family. Talk to them about the importance of choosing a proper password. They should avoid passwords that match their name or birthday. While they need to remember passwords, adding in characters, capital letters and

If it doesn’t seem right, avoid it. Many sites have chat rooms where kids can engage in conversation with each other. Despite all of the safety features of the site, there is still not a 100 percent guarantee that your child is conversing with another student his or her age. Remind your children not to share any personal information with anyone.

Imagine your home, totally organized!

Safe Strolling With regards to transportation for our little ones, baby, we’ve come a long way! Gone are the metal carriages with the vinyl covers and the unforgiving wheels. Today’s strollers resemble something that NASA could have created to travel an unknown planet and beam back scientific information. There are strollers for jogging with one child or two. Don’t jog? Don’t worry, there are strollers for walking. Want a combo pack? Try strollers that include an infant car seat system. There are even some strollers that are made to look like your grandmother’s carriage but with much better improvements. With all of the nouveau designs have come some vast improvements in safety. When shopping for a new stroller, there are a few safety issues to keep in mind. Make sure the stroller has a lap belt or a safety harness. All kids must be secured so they will not fall out. Once your baby reaches the wiggly stage, you will understand. The safest designs are the ones that have the “T” system. They have waist straps and a crotch strap that connect. Check the structure of the stroller. Some umbrella strollers and lighter weight models can tip easily. The wheelbase should be wide enough to hold the weight of the stroller when it is in use. If you are using an umbrella stroller for older children, don’t hang any purses or bags on the handles as they can cause the stroller to tip backwards. Make it easy for yourself. There are models that have onehand adjustments making it more simple to raise the height of the stroller or collapse it while you only have use of your one hand. Also make sure to find a model that raises to an appropriate height for the driver… strollers that are too low will cause you to bend putting a strain on your back.

40% OFF

Some strollers come with storage compartments big enough to handle all the necessities and more. Make sure that these compartments are not in areas that can tip the stroller.

Plus Free Installation

Once you’ve taken care of the safety aspects of the stroller, you can then shop around for the best prices. Surf online or if time allows, wait for end of season sales.

With incoming order, at time of purchase only.

This Month IN HISTORY CELEBRATING CANADA’S 150TH BIRTHDAY Canada is one of the greatest countries in the world. We have such a unique mix of plains, rivers and mountains from coast to coast. We are filled with kind and tolerant people from different cultural backgrounds. We are known as a peacekeeping nation and we love our sports, especially hockey. There is a lot to be proud of. So, as we approach our 150th birthday, let’s take a look back at what Canada and Canadians have accomplished to put us on the world stage and what helped to define who we are today. In the world of sports, Canada topped them all with the following two events. In 1996, the fastest man in the world, won gold at the Olympics in the Men’s 100m. Donovan Bailey put Canada on the sports map by having the fastest top speed of any human. At the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010, Canada set a record for bringing home fourteen gold medals, the most out of any other country that winter. Our Men’s and Women’s Olympic Hockey Teams took home two of those gold medals. Many laws and acts changed life for Canadians and made us famous globally. In 1966, the Medical Care Act was introduced by the federal government. It was implemented in 1968 and made universal health care for all Canadians a reality, which Canadians are widely known

for today. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms, 1982 penned by Pierre Elliott Trudeau granted better civil and political rights to all Canadians and helped with legalizing same sex marriage in 2005. Women made the spot light in many different ways. In politics in the early 1900s, women’s rights activist Nellie McClung was instrumental in getting women the right to vote. As a result, in 1916 Manitoba women were the first to have that right in provincial elections. Other provinces followed with Ontario in 1917 to Quebec in 1940. In 1992, gender equality got a boost when Roberta Bondar was sent into space as the first Canadian female in space, who also happened to be a neurologist. If we were to name one person who could be called a hero in Canada, it would most likely be Terry Fox. No other Canadian connected our communities from coast to coast by doing what some would deem the impossible. During 1980, in 143 days he ran 5,373 kilometres with the use of one leg during his Marathon of Hope to raise funds for cancer research and spread awareness of the disease. Canada was also in the forefront when it came to inventions and discoveries. In 1922, Sir Frederick Banting and Charles Best created a medical breakthrough by discovering insulin, which impacted the lives of people with diabetes, not only in Canada but around the world. In 1937, Donald Hings made what he called a packset, which later was redeveloped to serve in the war as, what we call today, walkie talkies. Grillicious! Close your eyes. Pretend it is a warm summer day around dinnertime. Now take a big breath… do you smell it? That is the sweet smell of the neighbours grilling their dinner. Why does it seem that the neighbour’s barbecue smells better than your own? If you feel that you fail as a master griller, there are a few tips that can help you prepare a barbecued feast to die for. Before you even entertain the thought of adding food to the grill, make sure the barbecue is in good condition. Use an environmentally safe cleaner to give your grill a scrub. Try to soak any grates to loosen any stubborn food residue. Replace any stones or ceramic plates. After the barbecue is clean and in good working order, it’s time to start dinner.

At Kloster’s we have a full variety of items for the smoker or the BBQ this summer!

Take any meat out of the refrigerator about 20 minutes before grilling. The meat will cook more evenly if it is closer to room temperature. Don’t get too heated. When using a gas or propane barbecue, watch the heat. Turning up the heat will only end up in burnt meat. If charcoal is your grilling method, don’t rush it. Start the charcoal about an hour before you intend to start barbecuing. You will want to grill dinner over white-hot coals and not open flame. If red meat is on the menu, trim away any extra fat to cut down

on the amount of flare-ups. Make sure the steaks are about one to one and a half inches thick. Anything thinner will likely dry out. Some say a lot of the flavour of barbecue meat comes from the sauce. There are a few things to remember when grilling with sauces. Don’t douse the food in sauce before barbecuing. Add any sauces during the last few minutes of cooking. Try using a rub on any meat before grilling. Leave it on for a few hours before cooking. The rub will season the meat without catching and causing any burnt flavouring. If you are cooking with charcoal, consider mixing in different wood chips. Hickory, oak and apple wood can add flavour to your food.

When cooking fish there are a few things to remember. Unlike other meats, fish should be cooked on high heat. Be sure to use a spatula to handle the fish. Once it is on the grill, try not to move it too much, it is delicate and will break apart. There are a few tools that can make barbecuing much easier. Invest in a heatproof glove. A good thick oven glove will protect your hands from the heat and any sudden flare-ups. If you are grilling a lot of vegetables or meats that can fall through the grates, consider buying a basket that sits on the barbecue. For food that likes to roll, a good pair of tongs is just what the chef needs for optimal control.

Did you know...

If you can say that your dad is into music, make plans to go to a concert together or visit a music store. If you know dad’s favourite band is coming to town, plan to go to the concert together even if it is not your genre of music. If concert tickets are too steep, there are music stores in the area that offer more than just one-stop shopping. Spending a couple of hours with dad checking out the various instruments can be a great way to spend an afternoon. Some may say that their dad is the biggest sports nut around. If your dad is into taking part in a sporting day, take a look at the facilities in your area. If swimming is your dad’s passion, try spending an hour lane swimming with him. basketball and head to the neighbourhood court for a few games of 21 with dad. If he prefers greener pastures, book a tee time at a golf course for an afternoon of the sport that ‘ruins a perfectly good walk’. Does dad have the need for speed? You may not likely be able to afford a day for dad that involves his favourite sports car. There are companies that offer car enthusiasts an hour or two in a luxury vehicle. The cost is not cheap though. What’s the next best thing for those with a tighter budget? What about Go-Karts? Check out a local track and spend a couple of hours zooming around with dad. He might just see how well you drive and let you drive home. Speed and sports may not be dad’s forte. Maybe dad prefers a hotter topic. What about cooking? If your dad’s talents are in the kitchen, consider taking a cooking course with him. There are many types of classes that include international cooking as well as baking. It could be the icing on top of dad’s day. Some dads just want a quiet day on Father’s Day. If your dad is a movie buff, why not treat him to a flick and a nice dinner. Maybe there is a particular movie he’d like to see. Perhaps he is interested in an international film that is showing at a particular theatre. Whatever you choose, enjoy this special day!

“Here’s How Dr. Josh’s DrugFree Approach Helps Golfers Improve Their Swing, Lower Their Handicap, and Play Without Pain” Is your back pain ruining your golf game? It starts out as just a twinge, but by the last 5 holes it becomes unbearable. You’re hesitant to really swing that new driver for all it’s worth – fearing that you’ll injure your back even worse . Or maybe you’ve had to stop playing golf completely because your back pain and sciatica are so bad.

Do Any Of These Conditions Affect Your Golf Game? • • • • • • •

I’m running a special 14-day offer for those golfers suffering with back problems. Until July 14, $35 will get you all the services I normally charge new patients $220 for! Why would I practically give away my services? Because patients tell me too often…

“I only wished I had found you sooner” This happens so often, I decided to do something about it and run this ad. Just call before July 14 and here’s what you’ll get…

Back pain Sciatica Disc bulging/herniations Muscle spasms Lumbar facet syndrome Pinched nerves Leg Weakness

• An in-depth consultation about your health where I will listen…really listen.

Sure, you can numb the pain if you take enough Vicodin, Soma or some other pill. But the real problem is while you play through all “numbed up”, you are definitely injuring your back even more....without knowing it.

Friends May Tell You Back Pain Comes From a Bad Swing...They’re Wrong! If your drives are getting shorter and shorter and your putts less smooth, it has more to do with your back than your swing. Studies show that about one-third of touring PGA and LPGA players are playing with back pain right now. These pros have the best swing mechanics in the world, yet still have back pain! In addition to that, another study conducted at the University of Calgary showed… “Pain-free golfers demonstrated over twice as much trunk flexion velocity on the downswing”. This means the less back pain you have, the more flexible your spine is and the faster you can swing – hitting the ball straighter and farther. My name is Dr. Joshua Nikkanen, owner of Crossroads Chiropractic. Over the past fifteen years since we’ve opened the doors, we’ve helped hundreds of golfers in the area feel better, return to the course and hit longer, straighter shots.

• A complete nerve, muscle and spinal exam to find the “cause” of your problem. • A full set of specialized x-rays to look for misalignments, bad posture, and joint degeneration… (NOTE: These would normally cost you at least $100).

Is Back Pain Keeping You From Enjoying Life?

I’ll answer all your most probing questions about chiropractic and what it can do for you. The appointment will not take long at all and you won’t be sitting in a waiting room all day either. To take me up on this special offer, you must call 905-830-1146 before July 14, 2017.

“If It’s Good Enough For The Pros…” The PGA has a full time chiropractor present at every PGA event year round. Even Tiger Woods has had a chiropractor on his team since the beginning of this career. In fact, he rode on the Chiropractic Centennial Float in the 1995. Pasadena tournament of Roses Parade. Before the parade, he said… “I’ve been going to the chiropractor for as long as I remember. It’s as important to my game as practicing my swing!” – Tiger Woods

• A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can map out your plan to better health.

When you call between the hours of 7:30 am and 6:00 pm Monday through Thursday, tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for the Special Golfer’s Evaluation before July 14, 2017.

IF YOU READ NOTHING ELSE,

Call today and we can get started with your consultation, exam and x-rays as soon as there’s an opening in the schedule.

READ THIS: Your driving distance is determined primarily by club-head speed. The larger the arc that the club-head travels through, the faster the club will be going when it contacts the ball. The size of your swing arc will depend on your spinal and pelvic flexibility, not your strength. Flexibility is much more important to your long game than strength. If you want to hit longer and more powerful golf shots you must improve your posture and flexibility.

Our office is called Crossroads Chiropractic and you can find us at 45 Eagle Street in Newmarket (just east of Yonge St.)

Sincerely, Dr. Joshua Nikkanen, D.C. P.S. Golf is a sport that requires your back in every aspect. If you do not address your back pain properly, it can haunt you and force you to give up golf forever. Don’t let back pain handicap your golf game any longer.

SUMMER FOOT CARE

ELEMENTAL CORE HEALING

The warm summer sun feels great after a long winter, especially on bare feet. It doesn’t matter how old you are, there is nothing like walking barefoot through soft grass on a warm summer day.

LINGER IN THE GAP BETWEEN THOUGHTS

Everyone remembers to wear sunscreen and a hat when heading into the summer sun, but few people think of their feet. While relaxing in an easy chair and tip toeing across the hot pavement, your feet are actually taking a beating.

Affordable / Professional / Client Centered Healthcare

We Treat:

• Muscle Pain • • Smoking cessation • Concussions • Sports injuries • Depression • Weight loss • Eczema • Psoriasis • Hot flashes • Fatigue • Infertility

Feel the shift towards a healthier you. Try our free 20 minute Acupuncture/Craniosacral Therapy consultation.

Before ditching the socks for a pair of rubber flip-flops, take a second to consider what can be done to protect the poor forgotten feet.

Call today to set up an appointment.

Sunscreen is not just for the upper body. Remember to apply a layer of sunscreen to the tops of feet. And just like the rest of the body, the feet will need another coating of sunscreen after being in the water.

Also available for corporate events: Treatment and/or meditation sessions

Speaking of water, it is important to protect feet from any water hazards. Most beaches appear to be all soft sand, but truthfully there are not many shores that don’t have hidden rocks and sticks. Wearing water shoes or flipflops while walking on the beach will ensure that the feet are protected.

At the pool, be sure to wash and dry the feet thoroughly after a swim. Pool decks and change rooms are breeding grounds for foot fungus. BYOT… bring your own towel and avoid sharing. Diseases can be spread easily through towel sharing. Keep an eye on toenails because they are more vulnerable to infection especially if they are damp. Trim toenails regularly, but cut them straight across. Do not cut too closely to the sides of the toe. Cutting across the top will help reduce the risk of ingrown toenails. File any rough edges with a nail file. Discoloured and yellowed toenails that are thick and brittle are signs of fungal infection. Consult a doctor for appropriate treatment. Those that live with Diabetes have more to think about when it comes to summer foot care. They need to do everything possible to prevent any injury to their feet.  Diabetics should avoid barefoot walks on the beach or at the pool. It is also important not to go barefoot in the locker room or even inside the house. It is imperative that there is no contact with any viruses or bacteria that can lead to infections and other foot issues.

Youth BEAT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT By Samantha Forani, Graduate of McMaster University The talk and concern of global warming has increased drastically in the twenty-first century, which has resulted in the rise of other things as well. Now I am not referring to rising sea levels and rising temperatures, but in fact the rise of anxiety levels in today’s youth. Teens and young adults are constantly exposed to doomsday talk and the inevitable destruction of our planet. Whether it is a poster at a bus stop, a lecture in class, or a segment on the news, it is everywhere. Studies have shown an increase in youth under the age of eighteen seeking counselling due to their concerns about the environmental crisis. Counsellors and psychiatrists say that the best way to beat this anxiety and sense of doom is to act. Many youth feel powerless regarding climate change, which leads to distress. But giving them ways to act and make a difference can help them overcome this feeling. There are so many simple changes to make in your lifestyle that can help to combat global warming. Even if it is a small change, it is still a change for the better. Recycling is likely one of the best practises when trying to have a positive impact on the climate. Always ensuring to reduce,

reuse, and recycle is so important and many businesses and commercial sites do not do it enough. Perhaps speak with someone at your school or place of work about a better recycling program, and run a campaign to encourage your peers to recycle more both at home and at school/work. As well, encouraging carpooling can be very beneficial. In a large school or work place, everyone is bound to find a good carpool partner, plus do not forget the bonus of carpool lanes. Now I cannot stress the next few. How easy is turning off a light? So many people do not do this when leaving a room but this simple task can make all the difference. Furthermore, swapping out your old lightbulbs with LEDs is massively beneficial as they use so much less energy. Unplugging appliances when you are not using them is also one that no one thinks to do unless they are leaving for a few days, and even then not always. Why does your coffee maker or microwave or computer screen always need to be plugged in? Answer: they do not and every bit of energy saved counts. Now these are just some of the easy ways to make a difference and as a result, lower your anxiety level by acting. And there are a million other ways. Join that campaign at school, run a community event to raise awareness, etcetera. The possibilities are endless and nothing feels better than acting and making a change, no matter how big or small.

Clay Small Cookie Cutters Stamps Beading twine

Small Straw Rolling Pin Cookie Sheet Parchment paper

What to Do: 1. Using a rolling pin, roll out the clay until it’s around ¼” thick. 2. Cut shapes using the cookie cutters, just like you would when making cookies. 3. Stamp a pattern onto the pendant, then use the straw to make a hole where the pendant will be tied to the string. 4. Transfer the pendant to the parchment paper lined cookie sheet, then repeat until you’ve made all of your clay pendants. 5. Bake the pendants according to the package directions and allow to cool completely. 6. Once they’re cool, cut a piece of twine to your desired length – go a little longer than you think you want.

This month send us an original photo of

Summer Sand Castles Our contest is open to people of all ages! Win Cineplex Movie Tickets! (2 General Admission Tickets, a Regular Sized Popcorn & Two Drinks). The winning photo will appear in the next issue of The Month Ahead. Email your photo (minimum 1MB file size) to bpianezza@gmail.com no later than July 10th, 2017. Please include your full name, address & phone number.

7. Fold the twine in half, then insert the loop through the hole on the pendant. 8. Take the other end and stick it through the loop. Then tighten and adjust. 9. Next, take one end of the string and tie it to the other end. You should be able to move the knot up and down the string it’s tied to. 10. Then, tie the other end to the other string, again making sure you tie it so the knot will move up and down. To adjust, all you have to do is move the knots up or down to make the necklace larger or smaller. 11. To use as an essential oil diffuser necklace, just apply 1-2 drops of your favorite essential oil directly to the clay and lightly rub in. It should last for at least a few hours as long as you’re using a quality essential oil. www.TheMonthAhead.ca June & July 2017 | 33
