Avoiding the Summer “Brain Drain”

W

hether it’s the summer “setback” or “brain drain,” no matter what you call it, summer learning loss is a very real phenomenon. According to multiple reports, including a 2011 study conducted by the RAND Corporation, students returning to school from summer vacation, on average, perform one month behind where the school-year last ended. This is a finding echoed in several studies, which consistently show that over the course of the summer holiday, students lose knowledge of the skills they learned throughout the September to June school-year.

According to Langen, summer programs offering engaging learning in robotics, coding, financial literacy, mathematics enrichment, and a wide range of other fascinating topics, keep bright young minds sharp in the off-season and give students an opportunity to “dig their teeth” into something meaningful. “It is thought that what is done during those 2 months makes a significant impact on the students’ academic success,” adds Langen. “A rest or change of pace is good for the summer, however, learning can still take place – and your child will appreciate it.”

With summer holidays in Canada spanning nearly two months, experts in the education sector agree that fighting off-season lag and keeping your child engaged during the long break from school is critical. “Significant differences in academic abilities between students happen during the summer,” explains Kim Langen, CEO and CoFounder of Spirit of Math Schools, an after-school math enrichment program for high-performing students. “Students may end the school year at the same academic levels, but there is a widening of the levels each year, and much of this happens during the summer holidays.” While some policy experts argue in favor of lengthening the schoolyear to combat summer lag, it has been shown that as little as two to three hours of daily summer education can help close the “summer slide” gap significantly. The lengthy summer break – the longest stretch of public school closures of the year in Canada - provides parents and students with an opportunity to not only stay sharp but also to leverage the gift of free time to achieve learning outcomes they might not experience in their day-school program. Parents often turn to private summer learning programs and camps to help their children explore a wide range of concepts, including those in exploration of STREAM programs (Science, Technology, Robotics Engineering, Art and Mathematics), which are becoming increasingly important in our rapidly changing world. While learning skills in problem solving, logical thinking, and teamwork, students attending summer programs dip their feet in to areas of study they don’t often see in the day-school curriculum. What’s more, they have fun while doing it.

Independent & Trusted Investment Advice

Drip. Drip. Drip. Most homeowners know this sound. It’s that annoying drone coming from the kitchen or the bathroom that does not stop… a leaky faucet. It doesn’t matter how many times you tighten the handle, the water just keeps dripping. The fact it is annoying is the least of your issues. It is costing you money and wasting water as well. What to do? Replace the faucet. If you are challenged when it comes to home repairs, enlist the help of a professional. Clogged drains can also be a very frustrating situation. Bathroom drains are notorious for clogs. Soap, shaving cream, toothpaste and hair combine to create a flow stopping mass that will cause water to pool in the sink. Many over-thecounter drain cleaners are available and are a cost effective way to clear the clog. Professionals don’t always agree with this method. They recommend investing in a drain strainer to catch any unwanted hair and goop from going down the drain. You can also remove the stopper from time to time and clean it. Don’t flush grease and any other liquid food substances down the drain. They can contribute to clogs. If your stubborn clog just won’t budge, call a professional. Running toilets rank right up there with dripping faucets. It seems every homeowner encounters a running toilet issue at some point. Like their faucet friends, running toilets can be costly to a homeowner. In fact, a running toilet Continued on Page 6...

can waste a couple hundred gallons of water per day. Toilets are simple machines. They have an internal system that can be replaced. The usual culprit of a running toilet is a leaky flapper or valve. Replacements can be purchased at hardware stores. It’s an easy fix. Leaky pipes are a great concern to many homeowners. While they can happen year-round, they are more common in the winter. Most pipes leak at joints. You will see wet spots or puddles on the ground or ceiling underneath a pipe. If you find a leaking pipe, you need to call for help right away.

What could be worse than jumping into the shower first thing in the morning and the water stays cold? Surprise! Your water heater is not working. The average life span of a water heater is about 12 years depending upon the make and maintenance. There is no quick over-the-counter fix for this dilemma. You will need to call in the professionals. And chances are, you may be looking at replacing your water heater. Older homes have a lot of character, and they can also have a number of issues. Water pressure is a common problem with older homes. There are many possible causes including clogged pipes and leaks. Old pipes often experience corrosion and that could cause a water pressure issue. Call a plumber to investigate and help put the pressure back into your pipes.

This Month IN HISTORY APRIL WEATHER TRENDS The month of April is anything but predictable. It is a month that is caught between seasons. While spring is springing, old man winter may not be completely done with adding a few flakes to the ground or some ice to the roads. Meteorologists call April a transitional month and they say that the time of year brings wild swings in weather. It can be warm one day and blustery cold the next. It can rain and then turn to snow in the same day much to the chagrin of many Canadians that have removed their snow tires. Albertans understand what an April snow event can do. Between April 17th and 29th in 1967, Alberta was walloped by old man winter. Intense winter storms dumped 175 cm of snow on the southern part of the province. There was so much snow that the western province had to call in the army to help them dig out. Food, fuel and animal feed had to be airlifted into the province. Many farmers lost cattle because the animals were unable to find food. In April 1974, it was a weather system of a different type that wreaked havoc, this time in southern Ontario. Windsor was on the edge of a series of tornadoes that had struck 11 states in the U.S within an eight-hour period. The storms killed three hundred and twenty three

people in the States and caused $1 billion in damage. In Ontario, eight people were killed when a funnel cloud touched down and demolished the Windsor Curling Club. Newfoundland is no stranger to powerful weather systems. On April 13, 1984, residents along the Avalon Peninsula lost power for days during an ice storm. Two hundred thousand people were affected when cylinders of ice formed on overhead wires. The ice storm lasted two days and covered the southeastern part of the province with 25mm of ice. Flood waters were responsible for devastation in Manitoba in 1997. Residents called it the ‘flood of the century’ after more than two thousand square kilometers of land along the Red River Valley was swallowed by floods. The water rose about 12 meters above winter levels. More than 800 farms were destroyed in 10 of Manitoba’s 14 federal ridings. Thousands of volunteers and Canadian soldiers worked tirelessly for days trying to stop the flood. Damage reached about half a billion dollars. In 2002, Mother Nature showed how she could create extremes within one month. Ontario and Quebec enjoyed a mid-April heat wave that shattered temperature records. Residents broke out the summer wardrobe but were disappointed when a week later snow, rain and ice pellets covered the Great Lakes region. There were several areas affected by the wintery weather but Ottawa felt the sting of old man winter. On April 28th, Canada’s capital city saw a record snowfall of 17cm. Wallpaper is Back It has been a few years since most homeowners looked at decorating with wallpaper. The design sheets used to be very popular, but then they had a falling out. The overpowering patterns decked the halls of homes for decades. It was just too much for many homeowners. The effort it took to put up the paper and take it down sent couples to therapy. Guess what? Wallpaper is making a comeback. While you groan, you should know that today’s paper is not your grandmother’s wallpaper. For those with a closet love of wallpaper, you will be glad to know that today’s designs are easier to apply and even easier to remove. You can put down the chisel and spackling, your walls have nothing to fear. The new style wallpaper is bringing with it a whole new look. Gone are the days of flowers and borders. Here are the days of bold, fun and graphic. 19124 Centre st, Mount Albert

Looking for something more luxurious? Silk wallpaper can add an elegant look to a living room, dining room or bedroom. It is great when you are designing a more sophisticated, formal space. This paper is not really the best choice for a kitchen. If you are hoping to add some texture to the walls, take a look at the embossed wallpaper designs. These papers will add a print to the walls, but don’t necessarily come coloured. Most papers need to be painted after they have been hung. It leaves a clean palate for anyone that is creative. If you are steady handed you can even outline a design and add different colours to the wallpaper. Maybe you would rather adventure to the wild side with bold new wallpaper. Geometric designs are funky and fun. You can decorate your walls with colourful cubes or herringbone patterns. These patterns can add a lot to a room and are not for the faint of heart. Try using the pattern on one or two walls, or add it to the middle of the wall with a frame. It will be your geometric patterned picture. Wallpaper can be used on more than just the walls. If you have a plain closet door, you can add embossed or embellished wallpaper to dress it up. Trying to add some height to a short room? Wallpaper is a great way to create the illusion that the ceiling is higher than it is. Try wallpaper that has a vertical stripe pattern. The long lines will make the room feel much taller.

Metallic designs can make a graphic statement on a wall. The metallic shine adds some depth to any room. Hanging this wallpaper can be a little tricky and does take some planning. The very shine that adds to the décor can also point out any glaring errors or issues. Patterns need to be matched precisely or any mismatches will be easy to see.

A Hardy Lawn Spring has sprung and with it comes a whole new list of things to do outdoors. No matter how hard you tried last year, your lawn just never seemed to look as good as the neighbours’ lawns. This year you vow that things will be different. What do you do to get your lawn ready for the warmer season? The first thing you will probably notice about your lawn is that it is covered in debris. There are always branches, twigs, old leaves and even garbage that have been left by the melting snow. There may also be a lot of sand that was used on sidewalks or roadways. Collect all of the debris from the lawn and rake out the dead grass. You will likely notice after you rake that there are many bald spots in your lawn. Invest in a cool-season turf builder to fill in the holes. You will need to seed the areas and then make sure to water daily for about two weeks until the grass starts to grow and catch up with the lawn around it. Do not mow until the grass has reached about two inches tall and caught up with the healthier parts of the lawn. If you are able, adjust the height of your mower to the highest possible setting. Tall grass does a better job of crowding out weeds and retaining moisture.

Take a look at the weeds that tend to grow in your lawn. If you have crabgrass, find a product that will help get rid of the issue. Crabgrass treatments are best applied in the early spring. If you are one of the lucky ones and you do not have any crabgrass issues, invest in a fertilizer that will feed the grass from the roots up. If you have grass that takes a beating in the constant summer heat, invest in a product that will protect your lawn from heat and drought. Four leaf clovers are lucky, but not necessarily if they are in your lawn. If you have a clover or other weed problem find the best product that will both fertilize the lawn and control the growth of weeds. How is your mower working? Give your lawn mower a tune up before the season starts. Clean the top and undercarriage. Remove any old stuck-on grass clippings and dirt. If you have a gas mower, be sure not to flip it over when you are cleaning it. Check the sharpness of the mower blade. If it has sustained a lot of nicks or gouges in the past, invest in a replacement blade. Before cutting the first grass of the season, make sure to put the mower in the sun for a couple of hours. The solar rays will help warm up the engine. It can be difficult to start a mower after a long, cold winter.

Nail Trends There is painting your nails and then there is decorating your nails. Let’s face it most of us barely get enough time to take off the old polish to put on the new. Some may even continually top up the previous colour until you can see the layers. It’s time to break out of the rut and try something new. Nail art is what it is about for 2018. Gone are the uniform single shades. Colourful designs are the “in” thing this year. Wear your brand. You wear your favourite clothing brands with all of their logos, now it’s time to extend that love to your nails. Decking your digits out with your favourite brands is all the rage this year. Why stop at brand names, your alma mater will be excited to see you painted with pride. Add your school colours to your nails, or paint on its logo. If advertising is not your thing, abstract designs may be how you’d like to express yourself. Anything goes when it comes to colourful designs. Try a vibrant ribbon across your nails or bedazzle the tips with an interesting pattern. Not every finger needs to be decorated. Try selecting a couple for a more dramatic look. Floral patterns are always attractive especially when they are embellished. Add a couple of 3D floral embellishments to create a look all your own. If you prefer a two-dimensional look, paint on a floral motif over a warm colour.

Plaid is in when it comes to fashion, what about nails? Choose a few different colours to create a plaid pattern on your nails. Any colours will do. Use the darker, bold colours for a winter/ fall look. Try pastels or lighter shades for a spring/summer design. For those looking for less of a three dimensional statement, glitter can add just the right sparkle to any manicure. Try a French manicure with a dash of metallic for added drama. Use a silver polish on your nails and paint the tips with glitter for a sparkly twist on an old favourite. Less can be more when it comes to nail design. Some of the most dramatic looks are understated. Pick a muted colour and add a simple design to one nail. Try the ring or pointer finger. Add a straight vertical black line. You will be surprised at how effective a single line can be. Keeping with the understated, it’s not often that nail designs draw the eye to the cuticles. A fine black line tracing the cuticle bed will bring your nails into the limelight. It’s a powerful way to add some character to a very plain look. Try a clear or light polish for added drama. Not good with paint? There are many varieties of peel and stick products which you can experiment with. You don’t have to use the same applique for each fingernail. Get creative and mix them up.

Senior BEAT Foot Pain There is not another part of the body that takes as much of a beating as feet do. They carry full bodyweight for decades. As feet age, they begin to show their years. By the time they reach 65, they can become stiff and achy. Collagen and elastin on the pads of the feet begin to break down and the once cushy ride can become painful. Foot care is important at any age, but during the senior years, foot health is crucial. Treat your feet with care by checking them every day. Look for any sores, blisters or bruises. Watch out for swelling or infected toenails. Problems with the feet can actually point to larger health issues, so it is very important that you keep an eye on any changes. Keep your feet clean. Wash them every day, but do not over soak. After 10 minutes your skin could dry out and crack. The loss of collagen in the feet means they are prone to dry skin and cracking. Make sure to dry well between your toes. Use unscented creams on the bottom and top of the feet, but avoid spreading any creams between the toes. Also, be sure to trim toenails frequently. Overgrown nails can lead to fungal infections, ingrown toenails or thickened nails. Be sure to cut straight across

the top of the nail and do not cut the nails lower than the end of the toes.

Imagine your home, totally organized!

Invest in a good pair of supportive shoes. Have your foot size checked every time you shop for shoes and be sure to try them on before buying. Your feet have changed over the years and you may require a different size or width. Shoes that are too tight can harm your feet. Leather and canvas shoes are the best choices for allowing your feet to get some air circulation. They also adapt to your feet and are less likely to cause any blisters or other issues. One of the best ways to avoid foot pain is to stay active. Going for daily walks will increase circulation, prevent cramps and keep your muscles strong. Staying active will also help the tendons. The water content in the tendons declines as the body ages. It means that the older someone gets, the greater risk there is of tears and ruptures. There are exercises that everyone can do to help keep tendons healthy. Be sure to see a doctor if you experience any unusual cramps, numbness, or tingling. If the skin on your feet or legs changes colour or you have any sores that do not heal, you will need to see a physician. For routine maintenance, there are many foot clinics around that offer various services including nail trimming and foot massages to seniors to help them keep their feet healthy and happy.

Youth BEAT Bedroom Hacks for a Good Night’s Sleep

Of course, lighting is a big factor in how well you sleep. No one can sleep if the room is too bright. So proper drapes are an important factor. Especially if you are looking for a good sleep in in the morning. Velcro straps are also helpful to make sure no light is creeping in the sides. Furthermore, sound is an important factor. If you like some white noise, fans are great to use and they keep the air circulating. I grew up in a small quiet town, and now I live in an apartment beside a highway and cannot fall asleep without the sound of traffic 24 floors down.

By Samantha Forani, Graduate of McMaster University Everyone has nights when they cannot sleep. Sometimes it is often, sometimes not so often. There are many ways to improve your sleep and a lot of it has to do with your bedroom and your nightly routine. Even small changes can affect your sleep pattern, so keeping a steady routine is very helpful to ensure a good night’s sleep. Whether it is a noise factor, light, or distractions, there are simple solutions to all of these problems to fall asleep easily. Firstly, make sure your room is organized and laid out in a way that best suits you. Make sure it feels spacey and comfortable so you can move around easily. Also, and this tip will make your mom happy, keep your room tidy. Having a clean and organized space will make you feel more at ease and less stressed, especially when getting ready for bed at night. Knowing you do not have any tidying or tiptoeing around to do will make you feel much better.

Now, this next topic was inevitable. Electronics. We are all glued to our phones and computers, and they very much negatively affect our sleeping pattern. Studies have shown that shutting down all electronics a half an hour or more before you go to bed will greatly improve your sleep quality as it gives your mind time to shut off and fall asleep. So turning off all computers, TVs, and phones before bed is important. More so, make sure all such electronics are out of reach from your bed to avoid the temptation. Charge your phone away from your bed and not right beside it, and if possible, try not to put a TV in your bedroom. There are also useful apps you can download for electronics that will change the brightness of your screen according to the time of day. Of course there are still many more factors to a good night’s sleep (like the mattress and sheets that you use), but that is specific to every person’s individual needs. Paint colour can have an effect as well as certain colours which can impact your mood. So find what works for you to make sure you get a good night’s sleep!

Wrap three layers of plastic wrap around a bowl. Slather on Mod Podge over the plastic wrap. This will help the string stick on to the bowl.

This month send us an original photo of 2.

Coil the string until you make a small disc, then stick it on to the center of the bottom of the bowl. Apply Mod Podge over the disk, then continue wrapping the string around the bowl while generously applying on more Mod Podge all over the string. Make sure not to wrap the string all the way to the edge of the bowl. You’ll need this edge to grab onto in order to remove the bowl.
