A Bit of Mattress History The first waterbed is invented in Persia. People fill animal skin with water.

First mattresses are made of leaves, grass and straw. Animal skins are used over it as binding. Beds are invented to raise mattresses off the ground away from pests and dirt.

Mid-18th Century: Linens and cotton mattress covers become common. Mattress design has improved shaped like a box with sewn edges.

Late 1800s: Box springs invented

In Ancient Rome mattresses define classes. The peasants sleep on hay, and the nobles on feathers. Early-1700 mattresses are first filled with wool or cotton.

1960-70s: Adjustable beds become popular in homes in the U.S. NASA invents cushion to protect astronauts at takeoff, and that becomes material used for memory foam mattresses.

2009: Temperaturemoderating mattresses invented to aid temperaturesensitive sleepers

1930-1950s: Inner spring mattresses with coils and airbeds are invented and readily available for consumer purchase.
