Ingredients:

Mommy’s Asian Chicken

Stir Fry Spaghetti

By: Sarah Lasry

Add the chicken strips to the hot skillet and cook for about 1 minute. 2. Add the stir fry vegetables and mix with the chicken and let cook in the pan. 3. When the chicken starts turning white (about 6 minutes from start), add the soy sauce, sugar and ginger. 4. Coat all the chicken & vegetable pieces well with the sauce and cover pan for about 4 minutes. Uncover pan occasionally and stir making sure the chicken is not sticking to pan and the soy sauce is not burning.

5. When chicken has been fully cooked, turn flame to low and add the spaghetti to the chicken, stir fry and soy sauce mixture. Using tongs fully coat the spaghetti with the soy and chicken stir fry mixture. If it seems too dry add more soy sauce to the spaghetti mixture and mix well. Serve hot. Serves: 5-8

Directions: 1. In a large skillet on med-high flame, heat the olive oil and garlic.

I baked a double recipe of the Apple Honey Muffins with Cinnamon Streusel that you featured in Issue 67, and there’s barely anything left for yom tov. My children all wanted to taste and then taste again. They are really delicious. Thank you for bringing us such great recipes.

TO THE MONSEY VIEW,

LIVING WITH SUN ON STONE

I just wanted to let you know that I am absolutely loving the new serial. Last week’s description of the American feast eaten for a typical meal in sharp contrast to Malka’la’s impoverished upbringing was especially vivid. I can’t wait to see what’s in store! But please, make sure it ends on a happy note!

While eating my chicken soup one Thursday night, I was reading The Monsey View, much to my delight, With the croutons on the table I did play And what picture, do you think, gave way? Thank you,

THE SAFER WAY TO PARK

Someone wrote about pedestrians being aware of their surroundings, especially in parking lots, and how hard it is to back out of a spot with so many people passing by. Of course, both the pedestrians and the drivers have to always be very aware of their surroundings, whether in the parking lots or driving down the street, where people may be turning in or pulling out of a driveway. I have been cut off many times by people who want to pull into my lane and don’t know to signal and catch my eye and confirm that I realize they are pulling ahead of me, especially when there isn’t much room to begin with and I have to wait and let space open up. I have been driving a 15-passenger van for over 15 years, B”H. One of the first changes I made in my driving habits was to start backing into parking spots instead of pulling in. I later saw this recommended for all drivers in an article from AAA. There is less likely to be someone standing at the end of a parking space, and this way, when you pull out of your spot, you can see better, and make eye contact with pedestrians and beep if necessary so they know you are pulling out. Thank you for your wonderful publication with so many different facets for all the ages and stages in Monsey! A. K.

As told to: Basya Lev

My teenage daughter and I went looking for a skirt for Yom Tov. We had a hard time finding something we liked, so I decided to sew one for her. We went to the fabric store and chose material that had a beautiful print. I sat down later that night to work on the skirt. I measured, cut, pinned, and then carefully sewed the fabric pieces together. Everything flowed until my daughter tried on the skirt. She needed one more panel put in to give it a flairy look. I quickly sat down and cut out another piece. Then, just as I was about to put it in its place, I realized that I had forgotten to make sure to cut the pattern in a way that the design on the panel would fit in with the panel next to it on both sides. I looked at the remaining material and saw I would not have enough. As I berated myself for not being careful, my hands subconsciously placed the piece where it would go. I looked at it and to my relief, I saw the piece matched perfectly. Hashem had guided my hands to cut in exactly the right place. The skirt was done soon thereafter, and came out beautiful.

The ultimate symbol of Rosh Hashanah is the scale, delicately balanced and easily tipped to either side. Typically we learn that our mitzvos are weighed on one side, and our aveiros on the other, but the scale symbolizes Rosh Hashanah on a much deeper level. The Day of Judgment represents a delicate balancing act. On the one hand, we recognize that Hashem is the King over all creation: our very life is in His hands alone, and His judgment completely determines our fate. On the other hand, Hashem’s judgment is based on His findings in the Sefer HaZichronos — the Book of Remembrances — and, in the words of the piyut Un’saneh Tokef, our signature is on every page in that book. Our own choices, whether for good or for bad, determine the basis of Hashem’s judgment. How do we find the right balance between taking charge of our own fate and placing our fate in Hashem’s hands? Hashem created everything in this world, including us. How much power do we have in this world? In the ultimate sense — none — but Hashem did not create the world that way. He handed us power. He gifted us with bechira, the free will to make moral choices, and He gave us the Torah upon which to base our morality and thus our choices. Take Rosh Hashanah, for example. Rosh Hashanah was not the day on which the world was created; the world was created on the 25th of Elul. Adam HaRishon was created on Rosh Chodesh Tishrei — the sixth day of creation. Since the world was created for man, the world was not complete until man was formed. Therefore, Rosh Hashanah is the anniversary of the creation of man, not the world. The timing of a Yom Tov such as Rosh Hashanah also points to the unique power Hashem handed to man. Yom Tov is not like Shabbos. Shabbos is a fixed day each week that Hashem designated as kadosh, and the timing of Shabbos cannot be changed. Thus, we say in the Kiddush of Shabbos, “Baruch atah Hashem, mekadesh HaShabbos — Blessed are you Hashem, Who sanctifies the Shabbos.” Yom Tov, on the other hand, was given into the hands of people. People determine the timing of Rosh Chodesh, and the consequent timing of Yom Tov falls out based on the human

ABA ServiceS At Home rendering of time. Thus, in the Kiddush of Yom Tov, we say, “Baruch atah Hashem… m’kadesh Yisrael v’hazmanim — Blessed are You Hashem… Who sanctifies Yisroel and the times.” Hashem sanctifies Klal Yisroel with the task of determining the timing of Yom Tov. On Rosh Hashanah, we are even more specifHow do we ic, saying, “Baruch atah Hashem… mekadesh Yisroel v’yom hazikaron find the right — Blessed are You Hashem… Who balance between sanctifies Yisroel and the Day of taking charge Remembrance.” We stand in shul on Rosh Haof our own fate shanah, and we tremble in fear. pass before Hashem like and placing our We sheep, and we are aware of everyfate in Hashem’s thing that is on the line: “Who will and who will die… Who will hands? live, rest and who will wander, who will live in harmony and who will be harried, who will enjoy tranquility and who will suffer, who will be impoverished and who will be enriched, who will be degraded and who will be exalted.” The prospect seems daunting, and a person could understandably want to hide from even thinking about what lies in the balance on Rosh Hashanah. But our fate is in our own hands. Hashem renders the judgment, but He has given us the formula. He bases His judgment on a book, but He has told us what is written in the book — our own deeds — and He has given us the tools to edit that book. Through teshuvah, we can erase our mistakes from the book. And if we have not edited the book properly in time for Rosh Hashanah and a judgment is rendered against us, chalila, the next words in Hashem the machzor bring the remedy: “But renders the teshuvah, tefillah, and tzedakah anjudgment, but nul the severe decree.” Hashem wants us to succeed. He has given us He gave us bechira and He told us explicitly what choices to make, all the formula. spelled out in the Torah. If we failed at this task during the previous year, Hashem gave us a tool — teshuvah — through which we can transform our mistakes into mitzvos. If we still have not completed the teshuvah process, Hashem gave us the means through which to soften the judgment — teshuvah, tefillah, and tzedakah — and He even gives us extra time beyond Rosh Hashanah. We have been given every means through which to succeed. The choice is ours. May we all have a kesiva vachasima tovah and a good gebentched year.

In the Torah it says about Rosh hashanah, “Yom t’ruah yihyeh lachem” (‫)יום תרועה יהיה לכם‬. The mitzvah of blowing shofar on Rosh Hashanah is found in the Torah. Chazal determined that the minimum of thirty kolos needs to be heard, though hearing 100 kolos is the accepted practice. • One must have kavana to fulfill the mitzvah of Tekiyas Shofar. • The baal tokaya recites two brachos to which the kehilla answers “amein.” • One should not say “Baruch Hu Uvaruch Sh’mo” to these brachos. • One should stand during the brachos and for all the tekiyos. • It is assur to speak from the beginning of the first bracha until Ashrei. • If one wants to be yotzei all the tekiyos, it is forbidden to speak until after Shemoneh Esrei of Mussaf. • Al pi halacha, all men above bar mitzvah are mechuyav to hear the shofar. Chazal tell us that all women and girls over the age of 12 accepted Tekiyas Shofar upon themselves, and are therefore also mechuyav to hear Tekiyas Shofar. • A woman is mechuyav to hear 30 kolos of tekiyos. Many women have accepted upon themselves to hear all 100 tekiyos. • The 30 kolos consist of three lines of tashra”t (‫)תשר”ת‬, three lines of tasha”t (‫)תש”ת‬, and three lines of tarat (‫)תר”ת‬. • The tekiyos do not have to be consecutive. Therefore, if one is interrupted in the middle of Tekiyas Shofar, one may make up the missed tekiyos during

56

/ T HE MONS E Y V IE W

Mussaf (or after davening). • However, she is obligated to hear each tekiyah fully without interruptions. If, for example, a child cries in the middle of Tekiyas Shofar, causing someone to miss part of a tekiyah, she is not yotzei and has to hear the whole line. Therefore, for example, if she missed part of the first tekiyah of a tashra”t line, she has to hear the entire line again. However, she can hear it later on during Mussaf or after davening. • When one hears a tekiyah, one has to concentrate on which tekiyah of that line it is. • If a woman is unable to hear the tekiyos in shul, and someone is blowing shofar for her, the woman should make the bracha herself (unless the man blowing is also yotzei with this blowing).

TASHLICH • Tashlich is a minhag and not a chiyuv. • While it is preferable to do Tashlich on Rosh Hashana, one can also do so during the Aseres Yemai Teshuva. • If one cannot make it to a body of water to say Tashlich, it is recommended to say Tashlich wherever one happens to be.

THE SECOND NIGHT OF ROSH HASHANA • Both Rosh Hashanah days are considered by Chazal to be the same Yom Tov, a “yoma arichata” (even in Eretz Yisroel); the two days are halachically considered “one long day.” Since there is a question as to whether one should make the bracha of Shehecheyanu in Kiddush the second night of Rosh Hashana, the poskim suggest that one should preferably either wear a new garment (one not bought frequently) or have a new fruit worthy of a Shehecheyanu. If one doesn’t have one of these items, a Shehechiyanu should be recited anyway. • If possible, women should have in mind the new garment or fruit when saying Shehecheyanu during licht tzinden (candlelighting). • Since from Rosh Hashanah until after Yom kippur are yemai hadin, the Anshei Knesses Hagedolah were mesakin to add the following to the Shemoneh Esrei during these 10 days: • Zochreinu L’chaim: If one forgets to say Zochreinu and one reminds oneself before saying the shem Hashem at the end of the bracha, one may still say it. If, however, one has

already said the shem Hashem, one may not say Zochreinu. Mi Komocha: If one forgets to say Mi Komocha before saying the shem Hashem of that bracha, one may still say it. If one has already said the shem Hashem, one may no longer do so. Hamelech Hakadosh: If one forgot to say Hamelech, but one reminds oneself immediately (toch kedei dibur) and before the next bracha, one may still say it. If a full second passed or one has already started on the next bracha, one may not say Hamelech there, but has to start over Shemoneh Esrei. During the weekdays of the Aseres Yemai Teshuva one adds into Shemoneh Esrei the words “hamelech hamishpat” at the end of Hashiva; If one forgot to say hamelech and one davens nusach Ashkenaz, one must go back to the beginning of the bracha Hashiva Shofteinu. If one finished Shemoneh Esreii and has said the yehi ratzon at the end of the Shemoneh Esrei, one should repeat the Shemoneh Esrei again. If one davens nusach Sefard, one does not need to go back to Hashiva, because the word “melech” is said before the words “ohev tzedaka u’mishpat.”

THE FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE On September 26th, the nominees for the two major political parties, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, participated in the first of three debates to take place between them. The debate was held at Hofstra University in NY, the home state of both candidates. It was moderated by Lester Holt and

covered three important topics of the day: Economy, Race Relations, and Foreign Policy. The first part of the debate, which covered the economy, was Donald Trump’s strongest performance. He came across as calm and well informed. He also managed to be on the offensive on trade deals and was able to communicate his proposed policies well. Once the topic moved on to race relations, he lost his fluency and poise. While he did

manage to bring up Stop and Frisk (which many consider to have been a major contributor in keeping New York City safe), as well as the endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police — he wasn’t confident or articulate anymore. Hillary was able to gain control of the narrative, notably mentioning banning anyone who is on the No Fly List from purchasing a gun, which is an issue where many Republicans have views different from Donald Trump. In the last part of the debate, which covered security, Trump did a good job attacking Hillary for the existence of ISIS, but Hillary managed to paint him as un-presidential for the comments he made in the past, such as his admiration of Putin and his stance on supporting NATO allies. Overall, the debate was lively and combative. Clinton played her part well, acting presidential, having her facts on hand and ruffling Trump’s feathers. Trump did a good job appealing to his base and sticking to his talking points, but failed to attack Hillary on her weaknesses. He did manage to turn around a couple of the attacks on him by saying he’d release his tax returns when Clinton released her emails. There was mention of Clinton’s 2008 campaign involvement in the Obama Birther controversy, but those were both issues brought up by the moderator and not Trump. If public opinion establishes the outcome, it would seem from the initial reactions, that it was a tie. Although time and the polls will tell, neither candidate appeared to gain or lose any supporters from this debate.

CHAPTER 10

Sun on

Stone By Chany Rosengarten Recap: The luxurious bed magnetizes Malka’la, but she forces herself to eat first. She feels wholly out of place around the Kahns’ dinner table. She wants to push herself to collect money now, tonight, but her host says she can’t go out in this weather. A host is a warden. In the prison of their generosity, Malka’la must oblige gratefully. Not because they had the power to make her lose out, but the contrary, because of the key they held in their hand, to unlock her success. “I really must go. I know that… it will be unpleasant…” “Not unpleasant. Dangerous.” Mr. Kahn once again lifted an eyebrow, then an eye, from the local paper. “I know it will be dangerous to go outside now, in the snow. But what choice do I have? I came in the winter. And my children are away, awaiting me every day. I can’t lock myself indoors. I must venture out.” “It’s a blizzard.” “Yes, it’s one of the coldest days so far this year.” Gella bolstered her husband’s arguments. “Do you think it would make sense to do this street?” Malka’la’s voice was one of respect. Daughter to parent. Disciple in a new

subject. “Just this street and then I’ll come right back, just so I know that I’ve done something, that I haven’t sat with folded arms, so far away from home.” They looked at each other, Gella, her husband, her oldest child. Gella shrugged an “I-don’tsee-why-not motion,” her husband the relenting nod. “It’s dangerous,” the older son said. “It really is. You’d have to walk carefully, avoid falling down. People have been buried. You’ll have to warm up after a half hour.” Malka’la bentched, excused herself, and ran to her room to grab her sweater. In the room, surrounded by the comforters and thick curtains, she paused. She sat down on her bed. The bed was soft and warm. Outside, the wind whistled its way through every crevice, warning, cautioning those who listened not to stand up to it, because tonight, the wind was the victor. She knew why she had braved

everything, left her entire life as she knew it and her precious, lechtige children — so she can collect for them. To feed them. To sustain them so they would survive. Her hosts had said no. They discouraged her as much as they could. Antagonizing her hosts was not even a choice. But she couldn’t take direction from them. Had they encountered the question of leaving their children behind for a month to be able to put bread on the table? Yet they were her benefactors. She felt like a small child. “Ribbono shel Olam? You’ll keep me safe, won’t You? I have to do it. And please allow me the dignity of making my own decisions, of holding onto the lioness’s strength that brought me here, to keep true to my goals. I am at the behest of these people, but really, I am in Your hands.” At the side of her room, there was a door leading out to the street. A measure of privacy, af-

forded her by her hosts. The door was surrounded by a thick, white plastic rope, evidently to keep the cold out, but it didn’t work well. Near the door, she could sense the frigidness of outdoors. “I’m tired,” she said to the woman in the mirror. Her reflection — sky-blue eyes, bud of a nose, tired, thick

She rang the doorbell. It was cold, but she was strong. eyebrows — nodded back with understanding. She should go to sleep, like her hosts had suggested. The clock on the wall said eight forty-five. That was early. People were still up, still accepting tzedakah requests. But she was tired. She couldn’t bring herself to don her sweater and turn that frosted doorknob. But she thought of Srulik, growing toward bar mitzvah without a father, now without a mother. She couldn’t remember how his face laid itself out, but she could see clearly how his feet ran, the swiftness he had in his step, one foot sweeping in front of the other like a tiger in flight. And his eyes, like hers but rounder, with freckles that dotted it. And her others. Moisha, Perel, Aharon, Rechy. She had to go. She had to. Just a little. Just one bit. She had to. She opened the door. A

stark cold blew into her room and threatened her. She closed the door behind her, braving it, defiance igniting her steps with heat. The snow was high. It crumbled as she walked, avalanching into the walls of her shoes. The snow was tight and cold on her feet. She looked at the first house on her right. It was a pretty structure, a design of brick and wood, set against the white, snow-filled sky. The world whistled. Wind sifting through snow, landed on her cheeks. She walked up their path, etching her footsteps into the as-yet undisturbed white. What would she tell them? She hadn’t thought this through, the putting her story out to strangers, have them judging its merit, paying its worth. She hadn’t planned what she would tell a person of kindness, how

cents were trying to propel themselves on wooden sleds. A shiver ran down her spine, and she shook, first her shoulders, her hands, then her body. She plodded through to the next house. I want to turn back; yet she forged on. There was no going back. Onward, forward, because the decision had been made long ago, and now she was just doing the legwork.

The woman threw a bill into Malka’la’s hands. One dollar. The woman hadn’t even wanted to hear. she would defend herself to a person of disdain. She rang the doorbell. It was cold, but she was strong. A woman opened the door. “Shulem. I am Malka’la Goldreb from Yerushaliyim, an almanah with—” “One minute.” The woman closed the door, leaving Malka’la to breathe out frost clouds alone on the porch. Shortly, the door opened again and the woman threw a bill into Malka’la’s hands. One dollar. The woman hadn’t even wanted to hear. Malka’la walked back down the path, cognizant of the clear evidence she was leaving with each step. She felt low. On the road, a few adoles-

Although the actual following through on inspiration is always the hardest part. When she introduced herself, she should skip the part about herself. Her legs were getting wet and pressed and her toes were starting to scream. She climbed a full flight of outdoor steps to a door with a wooden nameplate. “Eisenman,” she read. She wondered if they were related to the Eisenmans from three buildings down, if there was some connection. “My children, six yesomim—” It was a youngish boy who opened the door, dressed in fuzzy one-piece pajamas. “Mommy?” He left her standing there.

“Close the door,” a woman’s overwhelmed voice yelled. She waited for the woman to reopen. As she waited, the cold in her feet protested. She tried stamping her feet on the porch, and still she waited. Nobody came. There was no use waiting. It was cold. Was it a half hour yet? And she had earned a dollar. One, out of a thousand. She crossed the street to the other side. A woman who looked very tired, her head covering skewed and pointing to the left side of her nose, shuffled to the door. “I am collecting tzedakah. I have six yesomim to feed.” “I’ll see if I have something.” The woman went back into the dark interior of her home. A weird, burnt smell emerged from the house while Malka’la waited. It wasn’t toast. It wasn’t a pot that had cooked itself out. It wasn’t cigar smoke. Just deep, thick ash. The woman came back with $5. “It’s all I have. I’m sorry.” “Thank you. The Bashefer should bless you with gezunt, parnass—” “Thank you.” The woman shut the door. To be continued... Chany Rosengarten authors columns and serialized novels in leading publications. Rosh Hashanah Table The

By Leah Stern

Simanim are the basics that grace the Rosh Hashanah table, and each family has their unique traditional foods that they use. I grew up with the standard European minhagim: round challah, kup fun ah fish, zeeseh mayeren, and apples dipped in honey. Only much later did I learn that simanim are as versatile as our nation. This threesome is a blend of different Rosh Hashanah traditions.

CARAMELIZED BLACK-EYED PEAS Ribya is mentioned in Kitzur Shulchan Aruch as a Rosh Hashana siman and most Yerushalmis observe this minhag.

1 lb. black-eyed peas (from a quality company) 1 ¾ cup sugar ½ cup oil ½ tsp. black pepper 1 tsp. salt

1. Soak beans in water for 6-8 hours. 2. Drain. Check beans, discarding any that have holes or discoloration. 3. Fill a 3-quart pot with beans and water to cover two inches over beans. Bring to boil. 4. Cook on medium flame for 20 minutes. Drain (water will be murky). Add fresh water and cook for another ½ hour. 5. In a 10-inch skillet, cook oil and sugar over medium flame until caramelized. Add beans and spices. Cook for about 10 minutes until well combined.

(This recipe yields enough to share with all your neighbors and friends)

HONEY-GLAZED CARROTS Before I used this recipe, I always had extra cooked carrots, no matter how little I made. Now, no matter how much I cook, I never have enough. My kids enjoy this sticky, candied version.

3 lbs. loose carrots 1 cup sugar 1/3 cup honey ¼ cup oil ½ tsp. salt 1 cinnamon stick, optional

1. Slice carrots ¼ inch thick. Place in a 6-quart pot with sugar and honey. 2. Mix well. Place in fridge for at least 12 hours. Carrots will macerate and you’ll get slightly shrunken carrots in a liquid. 3. Cook over medium heat for 1 ½ hours, until liquid has mostly evaporated and it has a sticky consistency. Note: Cooking time will increase greatly when doubling the recipe.

Short on time? Prepare carrots before Shabbos and cook after Shabbos.

PEAR AND APPLE COMPOTE I think that just about everyone has apples on their Rosh Hashanah menu. But many add pears, as a siman that der Bashefer zul zich derbaremen. For many years, I had the z’chiya to host my grandparents for Rosh Hashanah. My grandmother would always bring compote. Hers was a delicious dessert, and no matter how hard I tried, I could never replicate its unique flavor. Whenever I’d ask for the recipe, she’d say, “Oh, it’s just regular compote.” But when I finally got through to her that she must be cooking “regular compote” differently than I did, she taught me this method.

8 ripe pears (Bartlett or D’anjou) 12 large Cortland apples 1 ¼ cups sugar 2 T. vanilla sugar 1. Place thinly sliced pears and sugar in an 8-quart pot. 2. Cook on a low flame. Meanwhile, peel, core, and slice apples. 3. Add apples to pot, only after sugar has dissolved and pears have begun cooking. 4. Add 4.5 cups of water, along with the vanilla sugar. 5. Simmer over low flame for two hours.

Rockland Residents on Edge after Bombings; Authorities Called in on Two Suspicious Packages Just days after three bombs exploded in Manhattan and New Jersey, local authorities were called to two different locations in Rockland on September 22nd, to investigate suspicious packages that had been left unattended. Sheriff James Falco said that the first package was found at the ShopRite supermarket in New City. Clarkstown police examined the package and found that it contained no explosives. Later in the day, an unattended backpack was found on a picnic bench at Kennedy Dells Park, also in New City. Both the Sheriff’s office and the Clarkstown police were called in to investigate the scene, ordering a precautionary lockdown of an adjacent community center. Technicians from the Sheriff’s Office x-rayed the backpack and found

Water Restrictions Lifted

Mandatory water restrictions enacted because of lower than average rainfall this summer have been lifted, giving Rockland residents the ability to water their lawns, wash their cars, and run decorative fountains whenever they want. “We appreciate the efforts of our residents and businesses who cooperated with the water use restrictions and

that it contained no harmful materials. It was later learned that the knapsack had been inadvertently left behind by its owner after soccer practice earlier in the day. Sheriff Falco stressed that all Rockland residents should contact the authorities whenever they see anything that appears to be out of the ordinary. “Law enforcement is trained and prepared to handle suspicious incidents like what occurred today,” said Falco. “It is worth repeating: If you see something, say something.” Report any crimes or suspicious activities to the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office at 845-638-5400. (Rockland Daily Voice)

helped get us through this hot, dry period,” said County Executive Ed Day. Day noted that county residents were still being asked to use water wisely and to conserve water whenever possible. Water restrictions, which were enacted on July 21st, were in effect for 63 days.

Black Bears Becoming Familiar Sight in Ramapo You may just find yourselves with extra guests for the upcoming yomim tovim, and they may not be welcome ones. Black bears, typically drawn to the smell of food in garbage cans, have become regular visitors to Ramapo. Miriam Katz, a resident of McNamara Road near the Pomona border, said that she sees them on her property on an almost daily basis. The Ramapo Police Department said it has received seven bear-related calls since the beginning of August. Calling the police isn’t likely to provide much help, since officers can’t do more than make noise in an attempt to scare a bear away. According to Lieutenant Mark Emma of the Ramapo Police Department, the Department of Environmental Conservation will only respond to a bear-related call if the bear is stuck in a tree or hurt. “This is where they live too,” noted Emma. Bears seem to

86

becoming more and more comfortable spending time in inhabited areas of Ramapo, reported Mrs. Katz. “What scares me about it, is that when you honk, they’re supposed to be scared off and not come back,” said Mrs. Katz. “But it came back.” Lieutenant Emma said that residents who find their bird feeders emptied or knocked over frequently are like dealing with bears, who will return in the hopes of getting another good meal. No bear-related injuries have been reported to police, and residents are warned not to leave food or birdseed outside and to keep their garbage cans tightly sealed. In an encounter with a bear, the best thing to do is to make loud noises and to avoid trying to corner a bear, an action that will likely cause the animal to become violent. (Rockland Daily Voice)

s the King passes through the field and enters the throne room for recoronation, we, His people, prepare to stand before Him in subjugation. But are our hearts really cognizant of what it means to stand before not only a king, but the King of all kings? Living in the lap of American luxury, in the heart of the most benevolent society yet known to the Jewish people, we have little awareness of what life was like under a ruling monarch of yore. It is little wonder that our fear and awe has perhaps weakened throug the years, considering the fact that most of us have never seen a king. The American president, though deserving of our respect, does not seem to fit the requirements of one. Only a monarch that can order or denounce execution by his will alone is considered a true king — according to the halachic standards that determine if one is required to pronounce a bracha upon seeing said ruler.* Throughout history, however, the Jewish people have had plenty of opportunities to feel the fear of kings that (appear to) hold the keys of life and death within their very palms. And while we pray to never be in a position in which a human being passes judgment on our fates, perhaps we can gain a better grasp of kingly reverence by peeking into the past…

Serving the Sultan Saladin For some, occupational hazards may

include the danger of heavy machinery or the potential for on-the-job exposure to disease. For the holy Rambam, however, appearance at his job site carried with it the overwhelming possibility of unfavorable judgment being passed by a powerful sultan. Serving as chief physician to the Islamic leader of Egypt and Syria, the Rambam met daily with the man who decided the fate of hundreds of thousands. Though Saladin was known to have a benevolent streak and would frequently allow residents of captured cities to freely escape, he could not by any means be considered shy with the sword. As his armies battled the Crusaders who sought to forcibly convert both Jew and Muslim alike, hundreds of thousands of soldiers were slain under his command. Saladin himself was known to take up the sword in particularly heinous methods of execution. This was the person that the Rambam tz”l reported to on a daily basis. We can only imagine the heaviness of heart that our revered sage must have felt when he approached the palace steps and made his way into the throne room. We can only assume that he whispered prayers under his breath for siyata d’Shamaya with his every word, action, and treatment. His every move scrutinized by Saladin and his entourage, a miscalculated step or moment of less-thanenthusiastic servitude could have meant a harsh decree meted out upon both him and the Jewish community he represented by virtue of heritage and association. The toll of the mental and physical la-

bor of attending to Saladin’s house was great. In a letter to his friend and translator Shmuel ibn Tibbon, the Rambam wrote:

We can only imagine the heaviness of heart that the Rambam must have felt when he approached the palace steps and made his way into the throne room.

Now Hashem knows that in order to write this to you I have escaped to a secluded spot, where people would not think to find me, sometimes leaning for support against the wall, sometimes lying down on account of my excessive weakness, for I have grown old and feeble... ...My duties to the Sultan are very heavy. I am obliged to visit him every day, early in the morning; and when he or any of his children... are indisposed. I dare not quit Kahira [the location of the palace], but must stay during the greater part of the day in the palace. It also frequently happens that one or two of the royal officers fall sick, and I must attend to their healing. Hence, as a rule, I report to Kahira very early in the day, and even if nothing unusual happens, I do not return to Misr until the afternoon. Then I am almost dying with hunger… By virtue of the Rambam’s endless dedication to Saladin despite the tremendous burden on his body, numerous harsh decrees were annulled for the Jewish people. In Yemen, for instance, the local Muslim population had begun harassing the Jewish community during a period of political revolution, but after the Rambam interceded with Saladin, the persecution

92

became noticeably less. Likewise, the Rambam was able to influence Saladin to help rebuild Jewish communities that had been destroyed by war, and protect Jewish lives throughout the region. Despite the taxing schedule that the Rambam maintained as the Royal Physician of Saladin’s court, he also was the head of the Egyptian Jewish community and somehow managed to publish the world-changing seforim of the Mishneh Torah, The Guide for the Perplexed (Moreh Nevuchim), and the Sefer HaMitzvos. Throughout his life, the Rambam tz”l was always keenly aware that just as he stood before an earthly king on a daily basis, so too he stood before the King of all kings, and despite severe fatigue, persevered, leaving behind one of the greatest legacies of all time. As it’s said of the Rambam: From Moshe to Moshe, there arose none like Moshe. Though we may never reach the level of servitude that the Rambam had, may we experience just a little of the constant awareness that he was privy to.

Testing the Heart Hailed as one of the greatest leaders of all time, Napoleon

Bonaparte was the undisputed leader of much of Europe and Egypt during the mid-1800s. Hundreds of thousands of men were slaughtered as his armies conquered each new country, region by region. A complicated character, Napoleon made reforms to each new area that fell under his domain, and enabled the open practice of Judaism. For the first time in many locales, the Jews were finally welcomed beyond the ghetto walls. In general, though, Napoleon’s rule was a heavy-handed, totalitarian dominance, and his name was whispered with a combination of dread and delight. The Baal HaTanya, Rabbi Shnuer Zalman of Liadi tz”l, saw the unique spiritual danger that Napoleonic regime presented the Jews. With the fall of the ghetto walls, the great tzadik realized that although Napoleon appeared to have peaceful intentions towards the Jews, his ultimate goal was to annihilate the ancient traditions of the people. “I will never accept any proposals that will obligate the Jewish people to leave France, because to me the Jews are the same as any other citizen in our country. It takes weakness to chase them out of the country, but it takes strength to assimilate them,” Napoleon proudly boasted, dreaming of the day when the Jews would no longer stand apart from any other group of people in religious distinction. To combat the spiritual destruction planned for the Jews, the Baal HaTanya charged one

of his beloved chasidim with a mission to infiltrate Napoleon’s army as a multi-lingual translator. Once accepted within the upper echelons of the French forces, Rabbi Moshe Meisels would be exposed to state secrets, and be able to share those with the Russian army to help them towards victory. Though the Czar at that time presented great physical danger to the Jewish body, the Jewish neshama was the sole target of Napoleon, and thus life under Russian control was deemed as the safest of the two options. Rabbi Meisels did, in fact, alert the Russians to an attack planned by the French army, and saved them the loss of many weapons in an attempt to destroy an arsenal. When the highest commanders of the French army discussed tactics before the attempt on the arsenal, Rabbi Meisels absorbed every detail. Suddenly, in the midst of planning, the door burst open with a crash, and every person in the room feared that Russians had invaded camp that very night. Instead, Napoleon himself burst into the room, demanding to know plans. Then he turned upon Rabbi Meisels and scrutinized him, clearly

distrustful. “Who is this stranger?” he demanded with a roar, and stretched out his hand, laying it upon the Rabbi’s heart, attempting to detect a quickened pulse that would signal the nervousness of a spy. But he felt none, for when he’d first burst in, Rabbi Meisels had told himself to remember the rule of chasidus, that “moach shalit al halev — the brain should rule over the heart.” Despite knowing that human nature is to have a quickened heart rate when standing before an earthly king in judgment — and even more so when truly guilty of the crime suspected — Rabbi Meisels was able to control his physical reaction. That physical reaction, however, should be second nature to us when we contemplate standing before the King of all kings, with our year’s fate hanging in the balance.

To Stand Before the King During the time that Rabbi Moshe Feinstein tz”l

lived in Russia, he was once seized by the secret police and forced to stand for a long period of time while facing a wall. If he moved, the agents acting in the name of the Russian monarch said he’d be killed. Mustering all of his mental and physical prowess, the rabbi held himself as still as possible, focusing only on the mitzvah of V’nishmartem me’od l’nafshosechem. By standing perfectly still for hours, he was saving his own life. The fear was unbelievably powerful, even though the Czar himself was not in the room. It was enough that his emissaries stood behind Rabbi Feinstein with bared weaponry. Years later, Rabbi Feinstein could still be found standing perfectly still — but this time, the stillness was during the Shemoneh Esrei. The incredible awareness of his life being placed under judgment that he’d felt when forced to stand at attention, stayed with him all of his life, and he tried to recreate that fear every time he stood before the Ribono shel Olam in prayer. For truly, as Yom Hadin comes upon us, we will be standing before the ultimate ruler of the universe, supplicating for forgiveness, compassion, and a beautiful new year. May we all feel true awe as we stand before Hashem, and may we merit to find favor and sweet judgment as we stand before the true King. *While most poskim say that one should not make a bracha upon seeing a president, there are those that say to pronounce the bracha without shem Hashem.

Effortlessly Deseeding Pomegranates

Extracting pomegranate arils from the confines of the pith (white tissue surrounding the seeds) was once a tedious task. And for the most part, many of the arils would be crushed or left behind, or fly across the table from the force applied to release them. Try this method. You’ll never deseed a pomegranate a different way.

STEP 2

YOU WILL NEED:

Cut the pomegranate in half horizontally. Cut deep enough to pierce the skin, but shallow enough that you don’t cut into the seeds inside.

STEP 1 Wash the pomegranate well.

STEP 4 STEP 3

Start with one of the halves and hold the cut side down in the palm of your nondominant hand over a medium size bowl. Spread your fingers and let the pomegranate half rest on them.

Pull apart the two halves.

STEP 5 Take a sturdy spatula or spoon and begin to tap firmly on the top surface of the pom. Don’t be afraid to give it some good whacks. Seeds will tumble out into your hand and the bowl below.

STEP 6 Continue tapping until all the seeds are released, you can finish off by extracting the stragglers by hand.

100 / T HE MO NS E Y V IE W

STEP 7 Store pomegranate arils in the refrigerator in an airtight container or zippered bag. Arils will keep this way for 4-5 days.

WHAT

By: Nissi Unger

The word “pomegranate” comes from the words “pōmum grānātum” in Medieval Latin, that means “apple with many seeds.” Pomegranates belong to the berry family. Pomegranates are classified as a super fruit. The fruits deemed “super” by nutrition scientists are packed with antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and other nutrients that can help you live longer, look better, and even prevent disease. Pomegranates do not contain cholesterol or saturated fats.

Pomegranates originated in parts of what have become modern day Iran and Iraq. Pomegranate trees grow in hot and dry climates. Every October, the Pomegranate Festival is held in Goychay, Azerbaijan. The festival features pomegranate cuisine, festivities, and several competitions, such as the biggest pomegranate contest or a pomegranate eating competition. Some 5,000 – 7,000 people visit the festival annually and enjoy the sights.

WHY

WHEN

WHERE

Ancient Egypt: The ancient Egyptians used pomegranates to treat tapeworms. India: The astringent white pith is used as toothpaste with salt, pepper, and ginger. Ironically, the juice, however, will stain teeth rather than clean them. Ancient Rome: Pomegranates were part of mosaics in Ancient Rome. In Japan, the pomegranate plant is often used for bonsai because of the interesting twisted bark some pomegranate plants can attain.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the fruit is typically in season from September to February. For the U.S., it’s from September to December. That’s why it’s nicknamed the “Jewel of the Winter.” In the Southern Hemisphere, the pom season is from March to May In the U.S., November is National Pomegranate Month. Thomas Jefferson planted pomegranates at Monticello in 1771.

The pomegranate is called a pomme-grenade or grenade in Modern French. A hand grenade is called as such because its shape closely resembles that of a pomegranate. From Alta Language Services: “If you were to crack open a hand grenade today, you would see tiny balls of shrapnel inside the explosive’s casing. The shrapnel mimics the pomegranate’s seeds.”

POMEGRANATE NUMBERS: 500 YEARS AGO, the Spanish planted the first pomegranate trees in the New World. Pomegranates can be stored up to TWO MONTHS in the refrigerator.

Pomegranate trees can live for over 200 YEARS.

Pomegranate trees can reach up to 30 FEET tall in ideal conditions, but commonly grow 12 TO 16 FEET TALL AS A ROUND SHRUB OR SMALL tree.

ARE YOU A POM? Australians refer to their British friends and neighbors as poms or pommies. The first recorded use of the word was in 1912, when the term was originally applied to an immigrant from Britain, and was formed by rhyming slang. A British immigrant was called a pommygrant, from the red fruit pomegranate, perhaps referring to the complexion of the new arrivals, which was then abbreviated to pommy and pom. Although some argue otherwise, it is not an acronym of prisoner of mother England. Aussies will say, “She is so Pom,” to indicate a person is so correct, cold, or formal, or any other attribute they believe to be “British,” much like they refer to Americans as Yankees. POMS ON ROSH HASHANA It is traditional to consume pomegranates on Rosh Hashanah because, with its numerous seeds, it symbolizes fruitfulness.

T S E V R A H N AUTUM S D R A H C R O E L APP In time for the apple-picking season and Rosh Hashanah, The Monsey View presents to you once again your apple-picking guide. Here, we’ve rounded up seven places to pick your own apples that are an hour (or less!) from Monsey. Before you go, make sure you call ahead to confirm hours, attractions and availability, since those change constantly throughout the season. There’s just something special about walking down aisles of trees with the scent of fresh, crisp apples and dried autumn leaves blowing in the wind. We hope this proves to be a helpful resource and inspires you to head out for a fun-filled and memorable family apple-picking day. ****** Note: The first three farms featured here are farther away, and offer a bigger, more wide-ranging experience. The other farms are closer to Monsey, and are generally smaller operations.

Travel time: 40 minutes

OCH'S ORCHARD

4 Ochs Lane Warwick, New York 10990 845-986-1591

Hours: 9am–5pm; call in to check for the pickyour-own days of a specific week.

Och’s Orchard offers the proper pick-your-own experience; they offer way more than apples! From week to week, their produce calendar changes to showcase the season’s freshest, juiciest fruits and vegetables. The fields are vast, and almost never crowded. You can choose either a small bag (quarter bushel, or about 11-12 lb.) for $14.00, or a larger one (half a bushel, or 22-24 lb.) for $27.00. Wagons are available for rent and is highly recommended; apples are heavy! You can also rent a grabber, for $3.00 plus a $5.00 security. The grabber is well worth it, since the best apples are on the top branches. Also, near the farmer’s market, you can enjoy a pick-your-own flower garden. Children love assembling their own bouquets, and the profusion of vividly colored butterflies that flit over the field makes the experience a magical one. The sweeping views at this orchard are simply spectacular. Pack a picnic lunch and a blanket, and head for the gazebo at the top of the hill for a midday siesta. On your way up, pick a few sun-warmed tomatoes right off the vines (in season right now!) to toss into your sandwich. Och’s has an endearing collection of miniature donkeys and miniature goats, as well as ducks, which can be petted, fed, and admired up close.

CHAPTER FOUR

Working from home is no man’s land. You’re not a bona fide working woman who enjoys all of the privileges, excuses, and kvetches of that hallowed class, but you’re not a real stay-at-home mom sitting cross-legged on the floor either. You’re working, but you’re home — and every move you make is scrutinized under the conflicting lenses of these two classes. Should I make the double chocolate mocha cream cake? No! You should be working. You don’t have time to play around in the kitchen. What’s wrong with marble cake? Yes! You have no boss, remember? You can spend your time as you wish — and right now that means making the double chocolate mocha cream cake. Really, I didn’t have complaints. Keeping a strict accounting of my activities had its benefits. But what did make it hard was the working-at-home mother’s special dose of selfbeating.

118

/ THE MONS E Y V IE W

Why don’t you just get up and go to work like every other woman in the world? You’d never manage to run a home and go out to work every day like all those other superwomen you know. Of course, the above statements are highly debatable, but inferiority feelings have no

When a job offer came my way and those questions boomed loud in my ears, I acquiesced. I’ll try it; I have to. I have to prove to myself and the world that I really can do it. That’s how I found myself standing in a fourth-grade classroom as a substitute English teacher — which I signed on for three months. The night before the job, I frantically searched

class planned out; I left nothing to chance. The twenty-odd excited students started out quiet and obedient. The lesson went smoothly at first: I asked questions, the girls answered; I read aloud, the students listened quietly. Until they didn’t. The students didn’t misbehave, but they were just a little curious about the new teacher who showed up behind their teacher’s desk. They had to know some very crucial information like where I lived, how

many children I had, and which school I went to. At first I answered politely, and firmly turned the discussion back to the e-a vowel combination, but in two minutes, the students were eager for some more pertinent information. I answered their questions good-naturedly, and to my dismay I discovered that I’m not either very excited about the e-a sound. I certainly had no patience to teach it to uninterested students. I peeked at my watch. Ten minutes. I must teach. But I hate teaching, and especially this subject. Just ten minutes (three months?). It was with sheer grit that I made it through to the end of class. I rushed home to get my baby, and of course, she had been screaming for a better part of the two hours. I thrust double payment to my neighbor, and she accepted it reluctantly, saying with a half smile, “The money’s not the point.” She was so right. Money does not pay for wasted mornings. I got the baby settled in her crib, made myself a strong coffee, and sat down at the table to think. I was expected at school the next day, and three times a week for the next three months. Dread grasped me like strong, pointed tongs. Even while the inferiority bells clanged in my head, I resolved that I would not continue this job, no matter what. It was just not for me. I got on the phone. I begged a jobless friend to take the subbing job. Nope, she had an interview the next day and anyway, she didn’t have childcare arrangements for her two children. Next, I tried a friend’s friend, who gently told me she cannot accept a job on a whim and she had to talk it over with her husband. For two hours, I made frantic phone calls to friends’ cousins and neighbors’ friends, but the job remained mine. Until my husband walked in the door. He didn’t panic. “Just call the school and tell them you can’t do it.” I stared at him and almost burst into tears out of relief, disbelief, or both. I hated copping out. I hated being a failure. But I wasn’t a failure. I was just honest. I may not have been a great fourth grade teacher, but I could be and was many other things. I’ve since turned down teaching or tutoring opportunities with ease. It’s okay that my childhood dream has not been realized, and I’m happy and busy with work from home. I’m a good boss — to myself.

food! The top shelf which once housed shofar-shaped sorbet ices the kids had painstakingly shaped with themed cookie cutters are now mounds of ghastly dripping globs of pure ickiness, if I may adopt my son’s expression. They’ve mercilessly left streaks of their nauseating, sticky sweetness all over my freezer’s interior and beyond. And that’s only one meal’s dessert. What about four meals’ worth of food? They’re all sitting right here in this dense, sticky, hot, putrid freezer! I glance at the outlet behind the freezer, the evidence staring me in the face. The freezer’s plug is not where it should be, safely tucked into the outlet. One of the kids must have mistakenly unplugged it while plugging the keyboard in. I don’t know how long the freezers been out of service; all I know it’s been way too long to salvage any of my hard work. Smug, super-organized, going-to-sleep-on-time-theweek-of-Yom-Tov, everything’s-under-control me is very far from in control now. The table’s been turned. No food, two days before Yom Tov. Eight adults, five children, and two newborns for four meals (you do the math). No food to serve them. No food. NOT ONE BITE OF FOOD TO SERVE! And today is a regular workday! “Mommy!” Four pajama-clad youngsters have joined the action. “What’s happening?” “Somebody must have unplugged the freezer,” the words nearly strangle in my throat.

We’re not going to play Who Dunnit. “And the ices must have leaked. And all the food got spoiled. ”I’m not going to lose it. I’m not! Not with four kids surrounding me, wide eyed.

The table’s been turned. No food, two days before Yom Tov. The food is a goner, true, but there’s something I can salvage. Hakadosh Baruch Hu gives me the presence of mind to find the

opportunity in the mess. When my ten-year-old son tells me he lost the raffle he’d learned countless extra hours for, the words of gam zu l’tovah easily roll off my tongue. The same happens when my daughter is close to tears upon watching her coveted solo go to a friend. “Gam zu l’tovah; everything is bashert,” I say. When my three-years-old loses his sticker again, gam zu l’tovah is put to good use. Now it’s my turn. Easy to preach, hard to accept, but I must. I cannot allow the chinuch and personal growth opportunity to be lost for a half

hour’s worth of venting. “I am very disappointed that my carefully prepared Yom Tov meals are no longer usable,” I say in a low voice. “And I’m a bit worried about how I’ll manage to put everything together again, but I’m going to say ‘Gam zu l’tovah.’ This is what Hashem planned for me today.” The older kids listen carefully, the younger ones merely shrug in response. In the pool of stickiness at my feet I see success, growth, triumph. This incident, I hope, will remain with my children far longer than the cherry pies and sorbet ever could.

Rosh Hashanah, Apples, and Fruit Trees

by Ann Zeilingold As we approach Yom Tov, and we prepare to dip the fresh, delicious apples into sweet honey, I began thinking of apples… apple trees... fruit trees and, yes, houses! There is no mortgage or real estate guideline that refers to fruit trees, but every once in the while, a client will tell me that they didn’t proceed with a house because there were fruit trees on the property. A few years ago, a realtor told me how when she was clearing her property of trees, she couldn’t remove a fruit tree, but what mazel, lightning struck the tree, so she was able to! What is the correlation between fruit trees and homes? It seems this stems from Chumash Devarim, Perek Chof, which contains many of the laws of warfare. One of them involves the cutting down of fruit trees: “When you besiege a city for many days to wage war against it to capture it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an ax against them, for you may eat from them, but you shall not cut them down. Is the tree of the field a man, to go into the siege before you? However, a tree you know is not a food tree, you may destroy and cut down, and you shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until its submission.” This is explained to mean that when it is not necessary to cut down fruit trees for the war effort it is prohibited to cut them down. In this case, the only purpose of chopping down the fruit trees would be to scare the enemy and take vengeance upon them, and therefore it is not proper. But in instances when cutting down fruit trees is critical to the war effort — for example, when the other trees do not provide enough wood to build the necessary war

136

/ THE MONS E Y V IE W

There are many instances where people have gone and still go to great lengths and expense to not cut down a fruit tree.

machines, or the enemy is hiding in the fruit trees or subsisting on the fruit, thus prolonging the siege — it is permissible to chop them down. It is also explained that the prohibition to cut down fruit trees is not restricted to a time of war. And it also includes the destruction of any object which is of benefit to mankind. Nevertheless, the prohibition of cutting down fruit trees is stricter than the prohibition of destroying other objects of value. Since man is compared to a fruit tree, it is particularly harmful for a person to destroy a tree, for the act unleashes negative spiritual energies. In fact, the Talmud tells us that Shichvas, the son of Rabbi Chaninah, was severely punished for chopping down a fig tree. So today, there are many instances where people have gone and still go to great lengths and expense to not cut down a fruit tree. I have a cousin who lives in the Five Towns who could not expand the dining room/ living room area because it would necessitate the cutting down of a fruit tree. I know of another client

of mine who got a “steal of a deal” on a home in Monsey that was located in an area that was zoned for multifamily homes, which normally would sell at a high price because of the potential to build, but because there was a fruit tree in the yard, a few potentials deals fell apart and no one wanted to purchase the home. My client had no intention of expanding the home so it was perfect. There is a grocery in Brooklyn, which expanded their store around a tree!

Obviously, if you are looking to purchase a home that has fruit trees in the yard, you will ask you own sheilos and make decisions based on your own research and daas Torah. To me, this is just another example how the mundane and gashmius can be elevated to a spiritual level. And what a great lesson right before Rosh Hashanah!
