do your children come home from school
Even if they ate breakfast? And lunch? And snack? Thousands of Jewish children are really starving, because they eat next to nothing all day. Their parents are so poor; they can barely afford bread - and often stretch a single loaf to feed many mouths. The children go to bed hungry and wake up ravenous, with no chance of stilling the rumbling in their bellies. You have the power to feed them. You. Yes, you.

For two years since my first attack of pain, tingling and numbness in my mouth, I started a round of doctors. I followed through a regiment of medications, but remained in the same condition... It was then when someone mentioned Dr. David Nissen. He was highly recommended, and ב”הI was not disappointed!!! At my first session, Mr. David suggested a few very effective vitamins. HOW WE SAVED WITH SONYMA
Your article about the SONYMA mortgages reminded me of the Hashgacha Pratis that we were zoche to in 1983. At that time, interest rates were in the ballpark of 13-14%. (Yes, you read that right. It is not a typo). We were asked to vacate our rental apartment, and we decided that it is time to buy. We had just given a binder on a house. That evening, my father a”h was in shul, when he overheard a conversation between two men, one of whom was a mortgage broker, regarding SONYMA. The following morning, there were open applications, on a first-come-firstserved basis. To apply, one needed a signed contract. He called me with this information, we contacted the seller, and together we went to his lawyer's house. The lawyer was a semi-retired 90-yearold, who graciously helped us out. My husband davened vasikin and left to the city to get his place on line. They were being very strict, needing every i dotted and every t crossed. My husband had everything he needed, but the woman processing his application noticed that on one document my signature was missing. That was enough to disqualify us, as was the case by many others. My husband felt that his heart is dropping. However, I guess Hashem wanted it to be bashert for us, because the processor told him quite

I was raised with a strong awareness that Chanukah parties and Chanukah gifts are goyishe things, and I was so hurt to read the survey results in Issue #28. I always knew that there’s no mekor to any of these, and people do it without thinking into why they’re partying. It was a real shame to see the weak point of our generation proudly being published. Just because it’s a convenient opportunity to give gifts to our children and parents, doesn’t give us the right to convert Chanukah into a goyishe holiday. Our children will ch”v grow up believing that Chanukah is for partying and forget about the real reasons. C.M.

The letter of last week, regarding the lack of customer service and lack of mentchlichkeit the writer experienced reminded me of an experience I had a couple of years ago when I went to buy an outfit to wear at my son’s pidyon haben, taking along my newborn son and my “maven,” my sister with her baby. We were dealt with in the most condescending manner, as if we were nuisances, and for good measure, a young girl working there asked us, “What do you think this is, Aim B’Yisroel?” I never stepped foot into that

WeighSmarter HOW DOES EFT WORK?
By Esty Weiss
Emotional Freedom Technique – What Is It? This is a long -awaited article for many of my readers. I am constantly asked questions about EFT, including what it is, what it does, and how it can help people. It’s a bit hard to describe on paper, though, so you actually need to experience using EFT to understand the amazing effect it will have on you. Nonetheless, I will do my best to explain it in simple terms. Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, is a psychological acupressure tapping technique that is highly recommended to optimize your emotional and physical health. Although some of you may still question – or at least overlook – the mind and body connection, the truth is that most of you have probably realized that emotional health is an absolutely essential component of your physical health! No matter how devoted you are to a good fat-burning plan and exercise regimen, permanent weight loss is extremely difficult when emotional barriers are in your way. You may experience a surge of excitement when you start a new diet, and you may feel as though you could stay on that diet forever. However, without your emotional health intact, you’ll be left wondering where you lost yourself, and how you managed to fall off the wagon.

When you swallow a Tylenol, do you need to contact the pharmaceutical company to find out how it works, or will you be happy enough that your headache has subsided?
The combination of tapping your fingers on different spots and voicing your feelings helps clear the short circuit, or the emotional block – or in plain English, the trapped negative emotions – that you never released, and that are still circulating in your body. EFT helps release those emotions and restores your mind-body balance. Since this technique is so simple – yet so powerful – some of you may have a hard time understanding how it works, and how it can possibly be so effective. A common question I often ask my clients is, “When you swallow a Tylenol, do you need to contact the pharmaceutical company to find out how it works, or will you be happy enough that your headache has subsided?” Or, if their doctor wants to perform a certain test, will that make them want to go to school for years to study how that test works, or will they be satisfied enough by the results of the test? Most clients smile and agree that what they really want and care about is “that it works,” and they don’t need to know the inner workings of it all. By all means, though, if you

prefer to study and became a certified EFT practitioner, and if you want to learn the “exact science” behind it, that is always an option.
EFT FOR WEIGHT LOSS Emotional Freedom Technique is used for issues ranging from sleep disorders to trauma and depression. For the purpose of this article, though, I will focus on how EFT can help you achieve your permanent weight-loss goals. After all, this is something with which about 95 percent of people are struggling. EFT helps accomplish the following: • It stops intense cravings in their tracks. • It allows you to enjoy all your favorite foods in
small amounts. • It helps you discover how you can eat just one or two cookies, and then “stop!” • It encourages you to realize how fearful you are of certain foods. • You’ll attend the next simcha calmly, without the “what will I do” pressure. • You will feel you have control over food instead of letting the food control you. • It prompts you to feel a sense of inner peace around food. • EFT shows you that there’s simply no need to overeat and soothe your stress with extra food. • It stops your obsession with food right in its track.
• EFT will stop you from binging, as well as compulsive and emotional eating. This is just the tip of the iceberg. To summarize this article in a single sentence, EFT has been proven to have amazing, potent, compelling and dramatic effects. Once you incorporate this technique into your daily routine, your life will never be the same! Still skeptical? I wonder why…? See next week’s article on “Scale Addiction.”

Parshas Vayechi Before each parsha in a Sefer Torah, there is a blank space. Before Parshas Vayechi, however, there is no such space. Commenting on this, Rashi calls Parshas Vayechi a “closed” parsha. He writes, “Why is this parsha completely closed? This is because once Yaakov Avinu died, the eyes and the hearts of Klal Yisrael were closed because of the misery and the bondage for they (the Egyptians) began to subjugate them.” Yaakov Avinu knew that once he would close his eyes, the darkness would descend upon Klal Yisrael. He knew that the years of subjugation in Mitzrayim and in all the galios to follow would then begin. Therefore, he gathered his sons to him to give over his final words and instructions as to how to stay strong during the hard times of galus. What message could Yaakov have given over that would speak to every generation, to help us have the strength to withstand every galus until Moshiach Tzidkeinu? The words he spoke were, “Hakavtzu veshimu b’nei Yaakov, v’shimu el Yisrael avichem.” “Come together and listen, sons of Yaakov, listen to Yisrael, your father.” (Bereishis 49:2) The chassidishe seforim explain that Yaakov Avinu first asked his
44 / THE MO NS E Y V IE W
sons to come together, and only then to listen. Achdus comes first. Without achdus, Klal Yisrael would fall apart. Without achdus, there would be no community to save, only scattered individuals.
As we trudge through the darkness of galus, we should keep in the forefront of our minds the first line of Yaakov Avinu’s final message for Klal Yisrael. Stay together. Forgive each other. Live b’achdus. After Yaakov Avinu was niftar, Yosef HaTzaddik’s brothers sent Yosef a message that before their father had died, he issued a command that Yosef should forgive his brothers. The question is, where do we see such a command in anything Yaakov Avinu said to
the brothers? The chassidishe seforim explain that Yaakov’s command that the brothers come together b’achdus implies that they must be willing to forgive each other, because without forgiveness, there can be no achdus. Yosef was the forerunner for the Jewish people into galus Mitzrayim. Yosef himself said that Hashem sent him into Mitzrayim, “l’hachayos am rav.” (Bereishis 50:20) The simple p’shat is that he saved their lives, ostensibly from the famine, but the same words can also be read “to give survival to a great nation.” So Hashem sent Yosef ahead into Mitzrayim so that Am Yisrael should be able to survive in galus. Clearly, Yosef possessed the spiritual attributes necessary to lead the way into galus and lay the foundation for Klal Yisrael to survive there. We see this in the fact that we bless our sons to be like Yosef’s sons Ephraim and Menashe. Yosef raised Ephraim and Menashe in galus in such a way that they were righteous enough to be counted among the shevatim. What spiritual attributes did Yosef possess that were so critical to the survival of Am Yisrael in galus? There are many, such as the ability to remain a tzaddik when alienated from the Torah
Gedolim stories are like a compass. They point you in the right direction. It is written that Hillel obligates even the poor to learn Torah, and Elazar ben Harsom obligates the wealthy. Well, Yosef HaTzaddik obligates us to forgive completely and with a full heart, no matter how deeply we have been betrayed. It may seem out of reach, but we must try. Rav Orlowek says, “Gedolim stories are like a compass. They point you in the right direction.” Even if we struggle to let go of our anger and forgive, we know it is the right direction to follow. Everything Yaakov Avinu spoke to his children - especially when spoken upon his deathbed - is a message for us as well, for we are his children. As we trudge through the darkness of galus, we should keep in the forefront of our minds the first line of Yaakov Avinu’s final message for Klal Yisrael. Stay together. Forgive each other. Live b’achdus.

May I put soiled laundry into an empty washing machine?
There are a couple of issues with placing laundry in a washing machine on Shabbos, which include that it could be a hachana for Motzei Shabbos, which is prohibited and that the lights on the contemporary computerized machines go on very fast through accidental pushing, touching etc. Due to these issues, the only circumstance in which this action is muttar is if one has an old-fashioned top loader, and puts the laundry into it, for the sole reason that the smell/dirt is bothersome on Shabbos.
world, but there is another important attribute as well: The ability to forgive. Yosef is the first person in the Torah that we see forgives another person. Yosef’s first recorded act at the beginning of the period of darkness and affliction ushered in by Yaakov’s death, after burying his father, was to forgive his brothers completely. When we forgive, we follow in Yosef’s footsteps and heed the command of Yaakov Avinu to stay b’achdus. Achdus is the key to our survival as a nation, and Yosef showed us the way. When we hold on to our grievances, we endanger the survival of Am Yisrael.

THE PARTYGOER As the mother of a large family I find myself busy around the clock, but I’m a very outgoing person and I like to have time to get out and enjoy myself as well. I’m always on the lookout for night outings - especially family simchos. Whenever we have a family get-together I am always the first to arrive and the last to leave. You might even call me a social butterfly; in fact, many people do. Usually, I divide my kids up among my friends and then go on my merry way. When one of my friends has a simcha, she sends her kids to me, and the child-swap babysitting method works well for everyone, every time. Every time - except for once, and for everyone - except for Chaim. One afternoon, I found myself farming out my kids so that I’d be able to attend my niece’s wedding. I wanted to be there for the full thing, and so I planned to have my kids sleep overnight at their hosts’ homes. When it came time to drop 18-month-old Chaim off at his destination, he started throwing a royal tantrum. “I wanna go with Mommy!” he screamed. “Chaim’l, you’ll eat supper nicely, go to sleep, and when you wake up Mommy will take you home,” I tried comforting him, lovingly patting his little cheek, but he wouldn’t give up. Chaim continued to cry and beg, insisting that I shouldn’t leave him behind. But what did he know about priorities? He was after all, only 18 months old. I had a chasunah to get to, and he just had to stay put. I felt bad for him, but all kids his age know how to throw a master temper tantrum, so I figured he’d get over it shortly.

Leaving Chaim behind in the trustworthy hands of my close friend, I waved bye-bye and headed off to the wedding. Little did I know that it would be my last worry-free simcha. I had a blast at the wedding, and every time I called to check up on Chaim, I was told he was behaving well, so I didn’t worry too much. Okay, I didn’t worry at all. I was used to these late night outings after all. Chaim however, had had enough of it by five in the morning. While everyone else was sleeping quietly, little Chaim awoke. He was a short, confident little man with a big plan of action. Silent-
on this fi n e day; unlike he usually did, and decided that he would daven at the vesikin minyan. When he walked outside he was met by a smiling sun and fresh air, and decided to enjoy it a little longer. He decided to walk to shul. Imagine this man’s surprise when during his early morning walk to shul he just happened to head down a side street and found a little Yiddishe boy being held by a stranger so very

With nary a thought for safety, he opened it and waltzed out to search for Mommy. Now dear readers, I’d like to take a moment to tell you that my friend doesn’t live on Rita, Calvert, or School Terrace. Neither does she live on Albert, Park, or any other cozy heimishe block… Take a moment and direct your thinking towards Paiken, Collins, West Street and beyond. Yeah. Imagine little Chaim’l out in that area for a 5 AM-walk. Now you can shudder. As Hashgacha Pratis would have it, however, the yeshua was prepared before the makah. While Chaim was beginning his walk, another man was beginning his as well. A man from our shul had also awoken early
different from his own family. The smell of danger was in the air. Little Chaim was heard telling the man in Yiddishe that “Chaim wants to go to Mommy,” but the stranger walked on, not understanding a word. With Help from Above, our dear shul friend reached the man and little boy before they disappeared. He profusely thanked the man for finding his “son,” gently eased the boy away, and with pounding heart, thanked Hashem for disaster averted. With a precious pekeleh in his hands, our friend went and knocked on all the neighborhood doors with a mezuzah, searching for Chaim’s Mommy. At 5 AM no one opened up. Anxious to reunite Chaim with his Mommy, our dear friend

Within minutes, a dedicated volunteer arrived and took a by now frantic Chaim home with him to wait for the inevitable call to come in, of frantic parents searching for their missing child. For almost an hour, little Chaim halfheartedly played in the volunteer’s playroom, until finally that call came in. Chaim’s bed had been found empty by my friend’s hysterical husband. In a panic he had awakened his wife, and together they combed the house looking for the little boy. A half hour later they called Chaverim on the verge of tears… Since that fateful day, Chaim refuses to sleep anywhere but in his own bed, and even then, he fights to stay awake if he thinks Mommy might go away, his little eyelids drooping shut as he wills
them to stay open. It’s very hard for me not to do the child-swap with Chaim anymore. It’s even harder to find a babysitter to come to my house when I must go out, and harder yet is explaining Chaim’s traumatic fear of Mommy going away. It’s also humiliating and uncomfortable to admit that a wedding came before my son’s need for Mommy. It was a hard pill to swallow, but I think I’ve learned my lesson. Kids are not just moveable objects that can be sent to sleep away against their will. Listen to their objections, because their feelings mean so much. Our kids’ feelings and safety must be our first priority. By listening, you just might save a life. Name withheld for privacy

Stone TWENTY NINE
DUVID’S STORY I came home one night to see Chaya kneeling on the floor, pins protruding from her mouth, fitting Faiga’la’s shimmering navy dress. My teeth clenched with the “do not tell, do not breathe, do not, do not let on,” and my knuckles became the pointy ends of stubby, curled up fingers. “Isn’t it beautiful?” Chaya peered up at me. “Faiga’la will be a queen at Malka’la’s chasunah.” I knew that I could never, ever, tell them the wedding wasn’t happening. That I couldn’t do, no matter how callous and evil I had been to them. No matter how much pain I’d put them through, I could never drop such a death sentence onto my household. At night, when my stomach crunched into itself like well-pummeled dough, I looked around at my family, sleeping serenely. I saw the threat that hung over them, the danger they knew nothing about; all the grief, all the anger and crying and trying, fumbling to soothe each other while recoiling inside from the shock that was to come,

but hadn’t yet arrived, because I dared not breathe a word. I awoke early every day. Never, in all the time I’ve cried and begged for change, never had I felt the suffocating weight of tragedy like this. This time, it was on me. It was my fault. I understood what Chaya must have felt when Chuna fell. Why had I never soothed her? Why had I never taken responsibility and said, “It was mine. It was all on me. I should have never burdened you like that”? She would have said we were one family. She would have been right, in a sense, but she would have still been soothed. It was too much for one man to carry, the weight of his own deeds. I thought I understood what Gehinnom must feel like. People describe it as seas of fire, or abysmal eradication. Knowing what I did, looking it straight in the face and owning that I did it – I caused it, it was me, no one else — that truth was all the fire, all the throwaway, all the pain that one Gehinnom could hold.
I cried often, and blinked the tears away when anyone saw. Chaya regarded me with a measured look and I got busy. They were tears of distilled agony. They weren’t the sort I’d offer to my Bashefer. I tried davening, but my heart was too full of pus and fire to feel, to open up. On Tuesday, only two weeks before the chasunah was sup-

How did I get here?” The tears formed inside my forehead, but they wouldn’t dislodge, giving me a headache instead. I went to work, like I do every day. ceilinged machsan, I couldn’t take it anymore. It was too much for me to even garner the energy I needed for one air conditioner. “You look terrible these days,” Rachamim said. “Out with it.” I told him. In two sentences, I sketched the entire picture of devastation. Would he save me by just giving me 40 percent of an apartment? “The shadchan,” he said. “You go back to her now.” I continued to stare at the metal bodies stored around the store. “Now,” he said. He nodded his chin to the door. I got up. I wasn’t sure what I would accomplish by admitting this to the full-mouthed Esther Perkowitz. “It’ll all be okay. Everything is okay in the end, no matter how it turns out. Breathe deeply.” I walked out, trekked to the home of Esther Perkowitz. Easy for him to say it’ll be all right, when I stood holding up a load of bricks, and if I moved, they would fall and bury me.

Esther Perkowitz wasn’t home. When I knocked, she came down from another corner of the chatzer. “Almost the chasunah,” she said conversationally. “Goldreb wants to cancel. I don’t have the 40 percent I promised. But I do have a loan. And Malka’la can pay back. She wants to pay it back; she’s fine. But Goldreb isn’t. He wants out.” “So you pay back the loan.” “I can’t.” “You could. When we know we absolutely must do something, we find a way. We always find a way out of impossible situations. This is a tight situation. I hate to say this to you; it calls for you to grow up, gather your resources, and do it.” She didn’t hate to say it to me. Her lips and nose and even her two eyes were pulled into the center of her face in what had to be the smuggest expression on a human face. My ledgers rolled before my eyes. We could eat less bread. We could light candles only on Shabbos. I’d work more hours, possibly taking two jobs instead of one; especially since I wanted Chaya to have less work. I wanted her to know there is, not that there isn’t, not to have to redirect all of her womanly wisdom into survival. As I stood there, my two feet planted hard next

to the shadchan’s door, I imagined myself toiling for most of the day and night. And I knew that as hard as I might work, nothing, but nothing, could be harder than facing the devastation I was feeling now. In my mind’s eye, I was feeling light. Hungry, bones aching, but feeling happy, hustling, sweating, doing the right thing. It was preferable, way, way better than wallowing and allowing my family to sink into my mud. I nodded several times. “You’re right.” “I will go to Goldreb right away. If they didn’t yet summon you to the rav, it’s possible they don’t have the guts to call it off either. I’ll be at your house soon.” “Please don’t.” I stopped her. “My wife doesn’t know.” “Oh.” “I’ll wait here,” I said. She hurried off. When she left, I looked around the courtyard with new eyes. The sun was bright, the stones a cool white to the touch. “Bashefer, You were here all along. I couldn’t feel You,
right. Perkowitz bustled back into the main entrance of the courtyard. I knew she was the bearer of news, the way she marched, self-importantly, to the cistern near which I stood. “Not a word to anyone,” Perkowitz started. I nodded. “Goldreb is paying 80 percent. They want to do it, for their son, for your daughter. You are paying 20 percent, and you are paying it up front, before the wedding. Go figure it out. Go find a money tree. But by Thursday next week, a day before the aufruf, the money is here, in my hands.” She shook her head vigorously, as one would when explaining to a toddler about ladders and fire. I nodded too. Then I went back to Rachamim, my heart practically exploding with song. Rachamim said, “You’ll have to borrow,” and even though my heart protested, I had known, promised myself, that I would. I

nodded my head. He wasn’t going to rescue me, but his confidence in me, in the world, in the way things go, would allow me to do the difficult but necessary next step. “Yeled,” he said to me, “I see you will never entertain the thought I was sure was front and center in your mind. So I will have to tease it into there myself. Most people work for people like me because they want an apprenticeship. They want to go out on their own. Technology is only
growing, more and more people will want the comfort their neighbors have. Don’t think that electricity is going away. It’s a growing business.” I agreed. “When you’re ready, you should start thinking in the direction of opening your own business. You’re good at it.” As we drove on, I felt the walls around my chest stretching, opening, yielding to the largeness of my heart. I would tell Chaya what happened. She had to know. She might respect me less, but I knew that the miracle that happened didn’t come from pretending, but from facing locked doors truthfully and waiting for them to open. I had never known, as recently as this morning, that the world held so much promise beyond those closed doors. That the reality I was in was only by design. That things could be so much better than I allowed them to be. To be continued…

Cheder Ateres Tzvi
Last night, more than one thousand participants enjoyed a memorable dinner at the Sheraton Hotel in New Jersey. All of them came to show support and join the evening on behalf of Cheder Ateres Tzvi. Chashuva Rabbanim, parents, friends and family members expressed their amazement at the Cheder and the wonder at the dedication they invest in the chinuch of their dearest assets; the kinderlach. The elegant seating arrangement and classy décor cast a soft ambience over the audience. Soft notes of music wafted
of the evening were the ‘Yaldei Ateres Tzvi;, the choir by our own dear children coordinated by two talented of our talented Rebbeim: R’ Eliezer Hersh Rosenfeld and R’ Velvel Schmeltzer. The pure voices rose magically and the beautiful stanzas about the Cheder filled the ballroom accompanied by heartfelt solos. The more they sang, the more the audience wanted to hear. A unique and historic memorabilia journal was distributed to all parents and grandparents. In this day and age, such a personal memorandum is rare and

Freilich Orchestra and Shira Choir harmonized beautifully throughout the event, led by the king in Jewish music; Mordechai ben David and his son Yeedle. almost unprecedented. All were touched and astounded by the personal message and inspiring design. Each child has a page in the journal with a message from his Rebbe, teacher, family and friends accompanied with a professional portrait and pictures of the Cheder. Three worthy individuals were honored at the event. Rabbi Motty Orenstein, Rabbi
Berry Cohen, and Rabbi Chaim Shia Rosenberg are three tzaddikim that have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice their very selves for this worthy institution. As the Nasi of the Mosdos, The Rav of Forshay R’ Chaim Leibish Rottenberg, personally awarded the honorees. Rabbi Greenfeld shlit”a, menahel of Talmud Torah Adas Yisroel in Melbourne, Australia, served as the guest of honor at the event in honor of his son, R’ Yoel Greenfeld our dear and Chashuva Menahel. He had many personal anecdotes and feelings that he’d heard from children learning in Ateres Tzvi. “I thank my Rebbe for teaching me how to learn a shtickel gemara on my own,” or, “I feel as if the Cheder is my home,” and many more. “If you listen to what the children say about the Cheder, you understand everything,” he finished poignantly. Rabbi Dovid Ashear, bestselling author and renowned Maggid of Emunah Daily, warmed the hearts of all, and he, too, regaled the audience with personal regards he’d heard about the Cheder and its warmth. The climax of the event was an audio visual presentation entitled, ‘ A Day at Ateres Tzvi’, many tears flowed as the parents were truly overcome with emotion observing the growth their children experience in a single day. Spiritually and emotionally elevated, all left the event overwhelmed with appreciation for the selfless administrators and askanim Mordechai Aron Goldstein, Yossi Brach, Hershy Hirsch and Shimmy Galandauer, who have taken the responsibility of the Mosdos on their shoulders. All were grateful to Hakadosh Baruch Hu for providing them with such a Mosdos for their children.

WINTER SURVEY 1.
How do you feel about winter?
Winter is beautiful, but how I wish it were a shorter season. I find the cold invigorating; I'd choose it over the heat anytime. During the long winter evenings, I enjoy quality family time.
I hate this cold, wet, dark season.
2. Snow! Your thoughts?
I await the first snow like a little kid. I panic when I think of snow days - school's out! I love the snow, but I hate the messy aftermath. I am always worried about my family's safety in the snow (driving, playing with snow, school buses). 3. What do you feel about winter wear?
I hate the extra weight of coats and boots (but appreciate the warmth). I love layering up. I like my coat- except when on an overheated bus! I like the fact that I don’t have to get formally dressed and can cover up with a coat. 4. How do you attach children's winter accessories to their coats?
Good old-fashioned clips I always label everything, so however they are attached, they make their way back home. I sew them on; it is the only way they don't get lost. I am too lazy for a long-term solution, but I have to replace lost hats and gloves periodically. 5. What temperature setting is your heat on during the winter?
Fluctuates according to weather Above 72 degrees Below 70 degrees Different members of the family prefer different temperatures.
Complete your survey in its entirety and sen d in by Friday, December 25 for a chance to win $50 at Sock Shoppe!
6. Who shovels/plows the snow on your property?
Family Member Management company or the guys who knock in The snow doesn’t get shoveled.
7. What kind of blankets do you use for the winter?
Authentic down-filled blankets Imitation down comforters blankets Summer quilts Fuzzy Spanish blankets 8. Which food or activity do you associate specifically with winter? (For example, specific meals for cold winter days, winter comfort drinks…)

Melaveh Malka By Guest Chef Leah Stern
The same scene repeats itself in almost every Jewish home. The possibilities are endless, but‌ what are we actually doing this Motzei Shabbos? Speculate no more. Treat your family to a royal melaveh malka experience befitting the escorting of the Shabbos Hamalka. In the days of yore, before bagel shops and sale events existed, families would gather around their table illuminated by the glow of candlelight and enjoy a melaveh malka meal which featured a freshly prepared food made especially for this occasion. From the variety of our family’s choices, the featured were voted as favorites.

NOTE: THIS DOUGH WORKS EASILY BY HAND.
2 ¼ c. warm water 1 ½ T. dry yeast 2 T. brown sugar
2 T. sugar 1 T. kosher salt 6 ½ c. flour
Dissolve yeast and sugars in warm water. Allow to proof for 3-4 minutes. Add salt and flour, and knead until soft, elastic dough is formed. Place in a greased bowl, cover and allow to rise in a warm place for 15 minutes. Punch down dough and divide into eighteen pieces. Roll each dough into a 6-inch strand, and fasten ends to form a circle or twist into a pretzel shape. Place on a greased baking sheet, cover, and allow to rise for another 20 minutes. Preheat oven to 375. Fill a 6-quart pot halfway with water and bring to a boil. Lower heat and drop four bagels at a time into the water. Cook for 2-3 minutes, remove from pot, and placed on an ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with desired toppings or use "Everything" challah topping. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Short on time? Quick bake at 450 for 10-15 minutes.
A hands-on family experience SEASO NED CHEF Best Kept Secret: Do you bake challah on Friday and have extra dough? Form desired amount of bagels from your challah dough, and freeze them on a greased baking pan. On Motzei Shabbos, defrost for about 20 minutes and proceed from boiling instructions. This method yields a more airy, yet delicious result.
This simple recipe is a double winner; it provides entertainment for the kids and satisfies their appetite as well, making it ideal for the for long winter Motzei Shabbosos. I prepare the dough while the boys are at Avos Ubonim, and they join for the boiling and baking process. OLD WORLD BAGELS

CHEESY VEGETABLE BREAD POCKETS
1 medium-sized challah Letcho: 1 large onion 1 large tomato
1 green pepper 1 red pepper 1 zucchini 8 oz. mushrooms, fresh or canned
3 T. oil. 5 eggs 他 c. milk 8 oz. shredded cheese
Chop onion and saute in oil. Meanwhile, chop the rest of the vegetables and add to the frying pan. Cook on medium flame for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper and set aside. Cut off the top crust of challah to form a straight edge. Slice the challah into 他 to 1-inch slices. With a sharp knife, slit into the top of each slice, and move knife back and forth, reaching deeper into the slice to form a pocket. Do not cut through the sides or bottom of the slice. Fill each pocket with letcho. Do not overfill. Whisk together eggs and milk. Soak each filled slice in mixture for approximately one minute. Lay the slices on a greased pan and bake at 375 for ten minutes. Turn over and bake another 10-15 minutes. Sprinkle cheese on tops for the last few minutes of baking.
SEASO NED CHEF For a time-saving shortcut, substitute letcho for frozen sauted onions and a can of mushrooms.
Although this recipe requires quite a few steps, it nonetheless yields a foolproof dish, as it does not require any special skill. The extra effort is rewarded with the result of a delectable culinary creation.

DAIRY MASHED POTATOES
6 large russet potatoes 1 clove garlic
4 T. butter 6 oz. milk
¼ tsp. white pepper 1 T. kosher salt
Peel and quarter potatoes. Place in a 4-quart pot with enough water to almost cover potatoes. Cook for approximately 25 minutes or until very soft. Drain most of the water, leaving about ¾ of an inch at the bottom of the pot. Add rest of the ingredients and mash. Texture will appear watery at first; just keep mashing until a fluffy and soft texture is obtained.
Potatoes are probably the most universal melavah malka fare, due to the fact that they are readily available and easy to prepare. This dish may not be great on the waist, but is definitely tops in taste!
Delight your kids with a personal touch. Squeeze some ketchup into a sandwich bag, cut off the small tip at the corner, and write your child’s name or a message on the plate near the potatoes.

The submissions that came pouring in for our “WINTER” poetry contest were just too amazing! We couldn’t narrow it down to just three winners, so we present to you a beautiful selection of the poetry we received. Unfortunately many lovely poems couldn’t make it in due to space constraints. Next week, we’re going to try to draw the limit to ten submissions.

The Election Process By Ruchel Lebovits
NATIONAL CONVENTION As you might have noticed last week, in the Presidential Primaries, each state gets assigned a certain amount of delegates. That means that when you are voting in the primaries you are not voting for the candidate directly but, in fact, voting for a group of delegates whom your state will then send to the National Convention taking place in July of next year. At the convention, the delegates will cast their vote for the candidate of their/your choice. Here is how that works: delegations get selected by the National Party. They are allocated as follows; each of the 50 U.S. states gets 10 delegates, plus three delegates for each congressional district. For Washington, D.C., the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands, fixed numbers of pledged delegates are allocated. Each state and U.S territory will be awarded bonus pledged delegates based on whether it has a Republican Governor, a Republican majority in one or all chambers of its state legislature, and whether it has Republican majorities in its delegation to the U.S. Congress, among other factors. Nearly all states have a binding primary or caucus, in which the results of the election legally bind some or all of the delegates to vote for a particular candidate at the national convention, for a certain number of ballots or until the candidate releases the delegates.
/ T HE MONS E Y V IE W
Some binding primaries are winner-take-all contests, in which all of a state's delegates are required to vote for the same candidate. Other states have a proportional vote where the state's delegation is allocated in proportion to the candidates' win percentage of the popular vote in state’s primary elections. In many of those states that have proportional vote primaries, a candidate must meet a certain threshold in the popular vote to be given delegates. Each delegation also includes "unpledged" delegates, usually current and former elected officeholders and party leaders, who can vote for whomever they want. A candidate must have a majority, not only a plurality, of delegates to secure his party’s nomination. In most recent elections, as the primary elections progressed and state after state cast their votes, the front-runner became clear well before the convention took place, so that there was no doubt who would be the party’s nominee. The conventions ended up being a big celebration of the party’s ticket rather than a selection of a specific nominee. This year, on the Republican side,
On Monday, December 21st Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina announced that he would no longer be seeking his party's nomination for President. “Today, I’m suspending my campaign for president,” Graham said. “I want to thank everyone who has taken this journey with me. You have honored me with your support. I believe we have run a campaign you can be proud of. We put forth bold and practical solutions to real problems.” “...While we have run a campaign that has made a real difference, I have concluded this is not my time.”
because of the large number of candidates still in the race with at least a decent chance of winning primary elections, it is entirely possible that no single candidate will secure a majority and the nominee will actually be chosen at the convention. This scenario is called a brokered convention. Candidates with smaller amounts of delegates will compel them to vote for one of the front-runners, usually in exchange for political favors such as the vice presidency or a cabinet position. This would be an exciting prospect as it hasn’t happened in many years.
This year, on the Republican side, because of the large number of candidates still in the race with at least a decent chance of winning primary elections, it is entirely possible that no single candidate will secure a majority and the nominee will actually be chosen at the convention.

THE CURSE OF THE FRONTRUNNER
As Ted Cruz moves ahead in the polls, gaining momentum nationally and, more importantly, inching his way ahead in Iowa, his team might be discovering that being the frontrunner comes with its own set of challenges. During last week’s Republican Presidential debate, Cruz made several gaffes which might have been overlooked had he not been doing well in the polls. In one instance, the moderator asked Senator Cruz which government agencies he would get rid of were he to become president, an important factor for a small government republican candidate, and he named the Department of Commerce twice and
then included both in his tally of the five agencies he’d get rid of. This “misspeak” was quickly picked up by political pundits and discussed repeatedly the following day. In addition, in an exchange with senator Rubio about the collection of metadata on terrorists, Cruz mentioned
intelligence committee in the Senate which deals with the US spying agencies and technologies, quickly cautioned him to be careful as a debate would not be the place to discuss classified information. The next day Senator Burr, who is the vice chairman of said committee, made a statement to reporters saying his staff would look into Cruz’s comments as a possible breach (he dismissed the notion later

YOUR HOME YOUR CASTLE
The Dining Room
uilding a house from scratch is like painting a picture on a blank canvas. The options are practically limitless and you have the ability to create the space of your dreams. But dividing up that space and making the best use of every square inch takes careful planning and forethought. It makes the most sense to dedicate the larger amount of footage to living areas that are used by the largest number of people and most hours are spent there, which include the dining room, living room, family room and kitchen. Maximize space by connecting these rooms with a single large hallway leading to several rooms, which affords lots of breathing space, instead of long narrow hallways that make poor usage of your valuable footage.

INTRODUCTION The dining room is mostly used for entertaining family and friends, whether it is for Shabbos, Yom tov or parties. It can play a central role in your home and may be one of the rooms seen most often by guests. Make the most of this important space by designing it right and you will enjoy it for years to come.
DINING ROOM TIPS • Proportion is important when configuring a dining room, so if your room is long it should be appropriately wide as well. A good sized dining room can range from 13 to 18 feet wide and from 20 to 34 feet long. If you are limited in footage, you can put your living room or family room next to your dining room with a large opening between the two rooms and “borrow” space when needed. • Since there are times when we have a large number of people in our homes, a wide opening to your dining room will ensure a good flow. A comfortable opening is five feet, but if you can only manage a smaller opening then try to plan a second opening to the room to prevent bottlenecks. If the entrance to your dining room is far from your kitchen you may consider placing a door from the kitchen to the dining room in order to make serving easier. • Don’t underestimate the value of windows in a dining room. Tall windows, which are both elegant and a great source of natural light, have an incredible impact in this all important space, although obviously, you need to leave adequate wall space to accommodate your furniture. • If your living and dining rooms are one large combined space, it would be nice to keep the rooms separate to optimize the independent usage of the rooms. Using a design element in the ceiling, floor, walls or windows to define the two distinct areas is an easy way to give the space the feeling of two separate rooms. • A butler’s pantry is a useful addition to any dining room, serving as a convenient storage area for Shabbos dishes and accessories as well as a handy spot for a washing sink. If you don’t have room for a butler’s pantry and want to have a washing sink, you may want to place it in the corner so that it is less noticeable.
If the above ideas exceed your budget, don't despair. With careful planning and the help of a professional designer many of these suggestions can be adapted in creative ways to make your home a dream come true.
/ T HE MO NS E Y V IE W
CHOOSING A FOCAL POINT
Creating a focal point on your ceiling can imbue your dining room with a sense of elegance and flair. Consider defining your ceiling with a soffit, tray ceiling, moldings or a cathedral ceiling. Over the table, lighting is a great source to combine style and comfort. By adding a lighted soffit above the table you can provide lighting over the eating area in a fashionable way. A tray ceiling is another way to add height to the room making the room feel more spacious. Create the drama of a raised ceiling by using double sided moldings painted a different color to give the illusion of a virtual ceiling. Paint can also add visual impact to your ceiling and using two different colors can really add a wow factor to the space.
Any wall that makes an interesting statement can become a great focal point. Placing a beautiful piece of furniture in the center of an empty wall can set the tone for your room, especially when framed by sconces, chair or a plant on either side. Sconces can also be placed beside an interesting piece of artwork or a mirror to enhance the depth of a wall. Another option is to use moldings, which are an incredibly versatile tool for adding drama to any area. You may use them decoratively and paint them two different colors, giving the room a rich, warm atmosphere.
The focal point can be created by simply having them. Any wall that has many windows will greatly impact the room and provide natural light to lift the mood. Topping your windows with transoms will give you more light in an impressive way. They take up very little wall space and add a taller look to your walls. Interestingly shaped windows can make the greatest visual impact in your dining room.

By Ruchy Reese They’ve taken the world by storm and brought the battlefield to a whole new playing level. Once a heavily guarded military secret, they are now in the public eye. With much potential yet to be unleashed,
these metal birds are one of the newest crazes in technology. In a rapidly changing world, drones have many up and coming roles. Read on to learn more about these fascinating flying objects.
FAST FACTS • Scared of heights but always wanted to be a pilot? You’ve gotta get a drone! A drone is an aircraft that was designed to fly without a pilot on board. • While in flight, the drone is either guided by GPS or by somebody that probably had a passion for electronic flying toys as a child… Realtime images are sent from cameras outfitted on the UAV directly to the pilot who guides the drone with a remote control. • Quickly on the way to becoming a favored component of warfare, drones are both safer and cheaper to produce than standard warplanes. • Israel is the current leader in drone technology and has sold drone products to more than two dozen countries worldwide. However, the only three countries to have yet engaged armed drones in warfare are the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Israel.

CREATIVE USES Dreaming of that perfect snapshot? For only $499 you can preorder a drone named Lily. Your drone won’t be available until February 2016, but once she’s here, you can program her to follow you around all day and photograph you from a bird’s eye view... Er, let’s make that a drone’s eye view! If you can’t make up your mind to preorder- don’t worry, ordering later will only set you back $999.
Out in the boondocks and in need of emergency medical help? If you are in rural Virginia you might get lucky; the first UAV was just approved in the United States to rapidly deliver medical supplies to hard-to-reach areas. Similarly, troops in need of medical help only have to look skyward. The RQ-7 Shadow drone is often sent to drop medication to frontline soldiers in their time of need.
Unfortunately, while drones are catching on worldwide, not everyone has the best intentions in mind. Smugglers have been caught using GPS-controlled drones to illegally ship contraband over the border.
IN HALACHA I don’t know anyone that actually has a drone. Do you? I guess when you get one, ask your local Orthodox Rabbi if there’s anything you should know!
Similarly, drones have been caught clandestinely delivering items to jailed prisoners.
While I’m not sure exactly how a drone will ring your doorbell, I do know that businesses don’t want to be left behind during the drone fever. Major corporations such as the USPS, FedEx, and Amazon have begun experimenting with drones for delivering packages.
UAV: Another name for “drone,” standing for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. GPS: Global positioning system. Predator drone: A UAV armed for battle.

Chaverim: By: Ruchy Reese
Against All Odds
IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE A TIME WHEN Chaverim didn’t exist. After all, Chaverim is a household name throughout the frum areas of America and Canada - and even across the ocean in far-flung places like Melbourne, Australia. In Eretz Yisroel, there also exists a branch of Chaverim called “Yedidim.” In total, there are around 30 active Chaverim branches worldwide. But believe it or not, Chaverim was almost doomed to non-existence. When the idea for Chaverim first occurred to him, Rabbi Shaya Erps was working as a devoted Rebbe at Yeshiva of Spring Valley, as well as an English Principal at Viznitz Cheder and as a volunteer EMT for Hatzalah. Having grown up in a home tremendously devoted to chesed, helping people was second nature to Rabbi Erps. “We were brought up in way that taught us to always think of someone else,” he tells me, describing how his parents used to send him to an elderly neighbor to take out his garbage on a daily basis. Rabbi Erps jokingly calls his parents “undercover Chaverim members,” due to the innumerable chasodim that they’ve performed throughout the years. His upbringing, which placed emphasis on shouldering his fellow’s burden, trained Rabbi Erps to always be on the lookout for ways to make the life of another human being easier. As a volunteer EMT accustomed to helping people experiencing medical crises, Rabbi Erps noticed that that there were community members who needed the type of helping hand that Hatzalah couldn’t always provide. Specifically, the germ of an idea began when he realized that there were patients not experiencing a medical emergency that nevertheless needed to be carried down a flight of stairs, or lifted for other reasons.
/ THE MONS E Y V IE W
A multi-week peek inside the world’s first Chaverim branch
The idea then developed further, taking on a life of its own when Rabbi Erps realized that the same men who could help lift a human being could just as easily help maneuver a car out of snow or change a tire. Rabbi Erps points out to me that in New Square a first-responder chesed organization called Ershta Hilf had been established to provide its immediate community with assistance. In Monsey however, there were no first responder groups outside of Hatzala, and Rabbi Erps envisioned an organization that would unit the many individuals who were already deeply involved with chesed on an individual basis, and transform them into one cohesive unit. Rabbi Erps Sat down and made a list of 50 things that his organization would be able to help callers with. He also determined what type of criteria the volunteers would have to meet. “The qualifications were very simple. No trainings were needed,”
he tells me as he describes the type of people that volunteer for Chaverim. “People only need to have a few qualifications: The ability to be very confidential as they go into people’s houses, they have to have good hands - so that they don’t break more than they fix, and they have to have a good heart. They also have to be good team-players, due to the nature of Chaverim.” Availability is also an important factor (especially during hard-to cover hours) ,and the Chaverim board tries to find applicants who live in areas that would greatly benefit from having more local members. In addition to that, each volunteer must have a daily shiur, and is not allowed unfiltered internet usage. Before officially joining the team, each member must also have the acceptance of his or her spouse. All in all, it’s a well thoughtout and professional organization that has made waves worldwide. At this point in time, the entire Monsey community appreciates that the establishment of Chaverim was a
I asked him how many members he started out with. His desire was to start with a minyan of volunteers, “I tried to get one person, two people, three people - but it went so hard. People were so pessimistic. Everyone said no.” Weeks and then months went by with no progress, and Rabbi Erps was ready to give up, but then he was approached by his friend, coworker, and fellow Hatzalah member Rabbi Avi Frank, who inquired as to how the organization was coming along. That inquiry pushed Rabbi Erps to give it one more shot, and that’s when things re-
very smart move, but it wasn’t always that way. When Rabbi Erps first set out to create the organization, he met dead ends at every turn. “How hard is it to get ten people?” Rabbi Erps quips when
ally took off. “Something changed,” Rabbi Erps says, “Suddenly, every person I asked said ‘Yes!’” He felt that Hashem was teaching him that He alone is in charge, and that despite Rab-
Chaverim Tip: Need help, but don't know where to turn? Call 371-NEED. Chaverim is here for just about everything! bi Erps’ best efforts, nothing would happen until Hashem willed it. Rabbi Erps compared the founding of Chaverim to the building of the Mishkan. Moshe Rabbeinu was commanded to raise massive cedar trunks to form the walls of the Mishkan, but Moshe Rabbeinu said that it’s impossible for a human being to do. However, Hashem willed the trees to
be lifted, and the people were amazed to watch the mammoth trunks take their rightful places. “The walls just stood up by themselves,” he says. “The same thing happened over here.
T H E M O N SE Y V I E W /
When it was up to me - nothing worked. When Hashem wanted it to happen, everything fell into place.” All of a sudden people were asking Rabbi Erps what kind of help they could offer Chaverim. From volunteers to funding, the help came pouring in, and Chaverim was officially on its feet. The esteemed Rabbi Schneebalg shlita, made himself available from the very beginning for round-the-clock shailos brought to him by Chaverim, and has been a tremendous source of guidance to the organization throughout the years. Talented individuals from all aspects of the community began volunteering, using their skills to help their fellows in times of need. Some members possessed know-how in lockpicking, some in tire-changing or other important areas. Cumulatively, these skills were shared and perfected over time, and Chaverim developed an elite team of unpaid volunteers. It took time, but nowadays even the local police have no qualms about calling Chaverim
when an officer finds himself locked out of his car. In the beginning, however, law enforcement was incredibly suspicious of Chaverim, often following members on various calls, believing that no one helps others
of Chaverim, even mocked it until it was actually up and running. Nowadays, everyone appreciates the organization and most people in the community have benefited from Chaverim’s help in one way or another.
We were brought up in way that taught us to always think of someone else. without expecting some sort of compensation. Thankfully, the truth emerged, and a very positive relationship was developed between Chaverim and the local police force, with the two teams often working in tandem to help the community. Rabbi Erps tells me that so many people knocked the idea
Rabbi Erps always tells those he talks to that if someone has a dream, and they’ve received endorsement from daas Torah they should never give up on it. After all, Chaverim began as a dream to help, and now its reality is felt in every corner of Monsey and throughout the entire world.
There’s so much more to say about this vital organization, and we hope you’ll join us in the following weeks as we go in-depth to learn about the inner workings of Chaverim. We’d like to thank Rabbi Erps, and the various Chaverim members interviewed for taking their time to provide us with this wonderful opportunity to learn more about Chaverim.

Heat the chocolate hazelnut spread and margarine together in a really big bowl in the microwave in 20 second increments, stirring after each interval until margarine is fully melted. Add the Chex to the bowl and mix. Mixing by hand works the best; plus you get to lick off your fingers when you are done! Place coated Chex into a large Ziploc bag along with the powdered sugar and seal tightly as you press out the air. Shake the bag until the Chex are fully coated. Makes 3 ½ cups. This recipe is dedicated to four kinds of people: those with peanut allergies, those who are children at heart, those who eat chocolate hazelnut spread straight out of the jar with a spoon, and - of course - everyone else.

Winterizing Your Home by Ann Zeilingold
It is hard to believe that the weather is so warm and it’s almost January. We may be lulled into a false sense of security thinking that old man winter will pass us by this year. (I doubt that). If your home will be empty during the winter months, make sure to either leave the heat on or to winterize your home; otherwise your pipes can freeze. Now let us say, it does get cold, and a home is not heated and the pipes freeze. What is so bad about that? Won’t they just thaw out? And what does the term “pipes freezing” mean? Usually when people speak about freezing pipes, the concern is that the pipes will burst. Surprisingly, freezing pipes don't burst because of ice expanding in place. Instead, it has to do with pressure inside the pipes. When water freezes, its molecules crystalize into an open hexagonal form, which takes up more space than when the molecules are in their liquid form — that is, the water molecules expand as they freeze. As the ice expands, it pushes water toward the closed faucet. This causes an immense amount of water pressure to build between the ice blockage and the faucet — eventually, the pipe ruptures under the pressure, usually at a spot where there's little or no ice. When the pipes burst inside a home a lot of damage can occur. There is water damage, because once the pipes thaw, water will run out of the area that “burst” causing mold and other water-related damages. Additionally, there can be multiple areas in the home with “burst pipes,” and until they are all repaired, the danger of water damage is there. If the heat is turned on, the house will not get heated.. Now let us say this home was for sale. Can one get a

mortgage on such a house? The answer is possibly yes. If one wants to close on a home, the lender wants to make sure that the home is functioning and that the utilities are working. If there are unrepaired burst pipes, the water and the heat is most likely is turned off. The prospective buyer will want to know the extent of the damage and the mortgage lender will not lend if the utilities are non-functioning and if there is water damage and mold. There is an exception. A rehab mortgage! A lender will lend on such a property with a rehab loan where the repairs to the property include fixing the burst pipes, restoring the utilities and heating system and remediating any mold, if there is any. We closed a mortgage on a foreclosure which had been empty for two years. The home was in a neglected state, but the main problem was burst pipes
and no functioning heating system. We gave them a rehab mortgage and the client closed on a home easily $150,000 under market value. They just completed the repairs and moved in this week. If you wish to purchase or refinance a home that needs some work, minor or major, a rehab mortgage may work for you. But if you own a home, don’t let it fall into needless disrepair by neglect: neglecting to make sure that the pipes don’t freeze. If your home
is for sale, call your realtor to discuss the better option, winterizing the home or leaving the heat on. If you are just going away for the winter, call your plumber to discuss which option makes the most sense for you.
