A MARVELOUS MENU I wanted to drop a line to let you know how very much your variety of chumrah-friendly recipes was enjoyed in our home this Pesach. I’ll share what I tried with rave reviews. The horseradish dip was something special, as was the fruit leather — better than anything I’ve tasted before. I loved C.R. Spitzer’s excellent, clear methods. What amazing ideas! The meringue pops were really out of this world. What a great idea to add nuts to a meringue! And the filling, made with the barest of ingredients, was divine. I also tried the latke-dipped chicken as well as the citrus capons, both of which were a hit for the seudah! Thank you for enhancing our yom tov in such a beautiful and creative way! F.P.

The Pesach recipes are amazing, and I love that I can all be made with the limited ingredients I use — I used mostly your recipes this Pesach! I made the chocolate cookie and the melt-in-mouth filbert cookie, and they were absolutely delicious. I love experimenting with recipes, and when they turn out so delicious it’s the most amazing feeling, especially on Pesach! E.W.

CAPTIVATING READ (Re: Majesty, Memories and Matzah, Issue 244) Thank you to The Monsey View for captivating us weekly with every article and paragraph! The Pesach publication was as worthy and wholesome as any purchased magazine, or better. I personally loved the passages in the article “Majesty, Memories and Matzah,” especially the one from author Chana Gluck, which I found delightful. Thank

A KEEPER! (Re: Milchigs Made at Home, Issue 240) I really enjoy The Monsey View. All of your content is very nice, but the recipes are special. The methods for making homemade cheese and yogurt for Pesach are so amazing that I’ll be saving them for the future. M.S.

SAVED BY A PROGRAM (Re: Bite-Size Pesach Cleaning) I wanted to share a tremendous yasher koach for your Pesach cleaning program. A lot of stuff got done before the virus, and then, when the virus hit, I was so much calmer knowing that we’re well underway. Yes, the place was messy and things were not in place, but the knowledge that the Pesach cleaning, and even the organization, was under control was so helpful. It was the best Erev Pesach we had, from a cleanliness and organization perspective — though not really virus-wise, especially since we’re not feeling that well, but it only makes us more thankful for the program. Thank you so much! M.B.

First, I’d like to thank you again and again for the wonderful cleaning program. It helped me immensely in the current crisis, and in general, too!

Second, I’d like to participate in joining the women who completed the countdown each week. Baruch Hashem, we were able and capable to make it to the end. Thank you, Family G.

YOUR VOICE DEAR CAMP AND DAY CAMP DIRECTORS, First of all, I’d like to take this opportunity to publicly express my appreciation to you for the huge amount of work, thought, time and devotion you invest in ensuring our children’s positive camp experiences. I don’t take for granted the great amount of work that goes into preparing and running each day of camp. Both the parents and children greatly appreciate it! From my position as a mother of children in camp, far enough to be an objective observer, yet close enough to see what’s going on, I’ve come upon some interesting realizations. We started off wanting to give our children a place to unwind, have fun and recharge. Also, social skills and creativity would be developed and physical health enhanced by crafting, sports and swimming. Sounds great! And this is, in fact, how camp used to be. There were plenty of sports, high spirits, some crafts, swimming and lots of enjoyment stemming from just being with friends! Somehow, as the years passed, we collectively (all camps — one

following the other), said: Why not make a good thing even better? So, if the campers enjoyed their trip, let’s take them on two trips! (And then three, four and five…) If they enjoyed seeing the show, why not add more shows to the program? Logically, this makes sense. However, in reality it works differently. Things have spiraled out of control. At the point where we are now, the overabundance of trips, shows, prizes and treats is actually accomplishing the opposite of our goal. We want to make our children happy. Exciting trips, shows and prizes make them happy. However, too much of a good thing causes its value to decrease. A child can’t enjoy something when it’s thrown at him in such profusion. In addition, he develops a sense of entitlement, which saps him of joy and leaves him waiting for more to be stuffed with. A trip, a show, a prize, a treat… these are all things that give our children a good feeling. However, they must be in moderation! Let’s take that one trip per half-summer, build up anticipation for it, then have the children really enjoy it — because they don’t get it every day, or even every week! Let’s have them sometimes earn their prizes, also given in moderation, so as to retain the prizes’ value! The children’s happiness should come mainly from things they do, not from things they receive. This way, the things they get retain their value, leading to feelings of joy and appreciation. Trips, shows, prizes and treats, when given in moderation, can then be really enjoyed. Because, as we know, less is more. With much appreciation, A Mother Who Wants the Best for Her Children

NEED CARE? WE’RE HERE! CARE365 WOULD LIKE TO PUBLICLY THANK

HATZOLOH OF ROCKLAND COUNTY for their phenomenal commitment to the community and each member’s personal dedication to each and every patient. We were at the forefront of many cases that Hatzoloh treated and can attest that their devoted concern to every patient was conducted as their own close relatives. This exceptional behavior can only be repaid by Hashem – however, we each owe them a debt of gratitude. Many Hashem bless Hatzoloh and all their members with extraordinary siyata d’shimaya and an abundance of health, wealth and Yiddish Nachas!!

1 Main Street • Monsey, N.Y. 10952

845-CARE-365 | 845-371-7200 WE KNOW THAT THERE ARE MANY OPTIONS IN OUR COMMUNITY FOR HEALTHCARE AND WE THANK YOU FOR TRUSTING US WITH YOUR CARE.

KING BREAW NE S As you might’ve heard – Care365 resisted non-FDA approved for Covid-19 (CoronaVirus) accuracy testing because we did not want the community’s positive number to tilt upwards – especially since most of the testing were non-FDA approved Covid-19 specific level and had unreliable results (positive & negative). However, Breaking News: Care365 was advised that an FDA approved IgG – (Immunoglobulin G) Covid-19 specific level antibody test should be authorized by this week. An IgG Covid-19 specific level antibody test consists of drawing of blood and can reveal if a person had the CoronaVirus already or has it currently and is asymptomatic but has a viral load antibody protection (Antibodies is a blood protein produced in response to and counteracting a specific antigen/virus. Antibodies combine chemically with substances which the body recognizes as alien, such as bacteria, viruses, and foreign substances in the blood and assists the immune system in fighting off the virus). In conjunction with Governor Cuomo’s current decree that antibody testing should be done for all New Yorkers – these IgG Covid-19 specific level tests will help getting the current New York Pause to open more quickly and safely. In anticipation of the IgG Covid-19 specific level testing, Care365 has ramped up its all-hands-on-deck employee quantitative readiness and availability to accommodate the community’s needs and demands. This will help ease the fear with accurate CoronaVirus IgG viral load protection information and get New York - especially Rockland County up and running again. If need be, Care365 will also broaden our hours to support our community. Again, we thank you for your kind words and most importantly for your trust.

Due to Covid-19, we were inundated with orders on a limited staff . Some of you may have experienced longer wait times or imperfectly-filled orders, and we want to make it up to you. This week only, call us and we’ll make it right for you, refunding and replacing your order as needed at no charge.

PA RS H A S TA Z R I AM E T ZO R A In last week’s parsha, Parshas Shemini, the Torah details the guidelines regarding purity of animals, listing which animals are kosher and which animals are not kosher, as well as which animals are a source of impurity to us. This week’s parsha, Parshas Tazria-Metzora, outlines the halachos regarding human purity. Rashi, commenting on Vayikra 12:2, cites the Midrash (Vayikra Rabbah 14:1) that just as animals were created first and man last, so too are the halachos of purity about animals listed before those of man. What can it mean that animals were not only created before man, but that the halachos regarding their purity are listed before ours? The Gemara (Sanhedrin 38a) explains that man was created last so that if he should become haughty, he can be reminded that even the mosquito was created before him. At the same time, the Zohar Hakadosh explains that the body of Creation was prepared first and

then the soul — and that soul was mankind. Indeed, R’ Avigdor Miller, ztâ€?l, points out that the Torah first described the creation of the universe with all of its stars and planets, then it turned its focus to one planet alone. Regarding that planet, the Torah first described all the animals created, but then it turned to focus solely on mankind. Furthermore, the animals were all created en masse, while man was created alone. This brings into focus the statement in the Gemara (Sanhedrin 37a) that a person should say, “The world was created for me.â€? Putting these ideas together, we see the truth of the well-known dictum that when a person behaves as he should, he is the pinnacle of Creation, but when he rebels, chalilah, he is less than a lowly insect, for even the insects were created before him. And what is the distinguishing characteristic that sets mankind apart from the animals? The Targum Onkelos, on Bereishis 2:7, explains that the characteristic that sets man apart from animals is our power of speech. The power of speech is tremendous indeed — Hashem created the world with ten utterances. Hashem created the plants, but waited for Adam Harishon to use his speech to daven for rain before bringing forth the first sprouts. Through words, we have the power to build or destroy. At this time, we are witnessing destruction on a grave scale, may Hashem have rachmanus. Thousands of our brothers and sisters are mourning family members lost to the deadly mageifah, and thousands more are still ill, lo aleinu. We need to harness our gift of speech and channel it to help bring a stop to the crisis. We can daven for Hashem’s mercy. We can hold back from speaking during davening. We can refrain from speaking lashon hara. We can learn Torah, which we do with speech. We can reach out and call the lonely and isolated, offering words of solace. We can say Tehillim. We can make sure that the words we speak to other people are words that build, and do not destroy. There is yet another reason offered for why the laws of purity of humans are listed after those of animals. The Sfas Emes explains that man was created last in action, but first in the order of redemption. All of Creation requires tikkun, which is why the Torah states, â€œâ€Śasher bara Elokim la’asos — ‌which Hashem created to doâ€? (Bereishis 2:3). Thus, man was created last, right before Shabbos, for Shabbos is a time of redemption. When humanity does its job right, we have the power to bring redemption to the entire world and all of Creation. May Hashem have rachmanus and send us the Ultimate Redemption, bringing health and healing to all of mankind.

Vigilance Urged as Coronavirus Begins Slow Decrease As the coronavirus outbreak continues, Governor Andrew Cuomo offered both rays of hope and armloads of caution at a Sunday afternoon press conference, noting that while infection rates have decreased somewhat, far too many lives continue to be lost to the pandemic. Speaking at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset, the governor said that hospitalization rates have slowly begun to decrease, going from a high of 18,000 to a new low of 16,000. Cuomo warned that despite the positive trend, New York still has a long way to go in its fight against the coronavirus. “This virus has been ahead of us every step of the way,” said the governor. “We’ve been playing catch-up from day one in this situation. So it is no time to relax, and this is only halftime in this entire situation.” Having seen infection rates plateau in New York, Cuomo

outlined the next phase in the coronavirus outbreak with an ultimate goal of a return to normal. Large-scale antibody testing, begun this week by the New York State Department of Health, will sample thousands of state residents and will indicate whether they were infected with COVID-19 as well as what kind of immunity they may have developed against the virus. "This will be the first true snapshot of exactly how many people were infected by COVID-19 and where we are as a population and will help us to reopen and rebuild without jeopardizing what we've already accomplished,” explained Cuomo, who noted that any plans to reopen schools and businesses would be coordinated with New Jersey and Connecticut to ensure public safety throughout the tri-state

44 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 22, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

area. Cuomo has continued instituting public safety measures intended to limit the spread of the coronavirus, pushing a possible reopening of the state off two more weeks to May 15. An executive order mandating that all New Yorkers wear face masks in situations where the recommended six feet of social distancing is not possible went into effect last weekend. The governor made a point of expressing his gratitude to first responders, police, essential workers and 95,000 medical professionals who came from out of state to respond to the crisis, giving special thanks to those New Yorkers who have been on the front lines every day. “To all of our health care workers all across the state, 1 million health care workers, 445,000 hospital workers, 160,000 nursing home workers, they have made all the difference in the world,” said Cuomo. “You know a crisis like this, it tends to bring out the best and the worst in people, and certain people can break your heart in response to this. But on the other hand, other people can rise to the occasion and give you such a sense of confidence in the human spirit, and the health care workers have done that.” But even as Cuomo announced that coronavirus numbers are down, scientists are concerned about second and third waves of COVID-19 that could be equally horrific, according to USA Today. Scientists are still trying to determine if those who have had the virus develop immunity and whether that protection would be lifelong or for a shorter period of time. Because COVID-19 is a new virus, no solid data exists at this time to answer those questions. Peter Marks, director of the United States Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said that new bouts with the virus are likely to occur until a vaccine is developed. Experts say that future waves of the coronavirus are likely to hit areas that are not seriously being affected now by the pandemic. “This outbreak has predominantly been on the two coasts,” said Gregory Poland, a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic and editor-in-chief of the journal Vaccine. “Wave 2 will be in the interior of the country where there are a lot of susceptible people.” Locally, 334 Rockland County residents have succumbed to the coronavirus as of April 18. Although Spring Valley and Monsey continue to have the largest number of confirmed cases of COVID-19, the highest infection rates by percentage of population have been recorded to the north in West Haverstraw, Garnerville and Haverstraw. Sloatsburg holds the distinction of having the lowest infection rate of any populated area in Rockland, while Harriman State Park, which has no official residents according to the United States Census Bureau, has had no reported cases of the coronavirus at all.

Recap: Batsheva, Blumi’s daughter, is bothered by her mother’s strange preoccupation with something, and it puts a strain on their relationship. Gideon discovers a small, new Halabi minyan in Yerushalayim and is very impressed with it. “Will you come up to us for a cup of coffee, Tatty?” Elisheva joked as they walked slowly down Chazon Ish Street. The joke was not about his actually coming up, but more about the cup of coffee, because Elisheva did not recall the last time she had seen her father drinking coffee. However, she was rather doubtful about the visit, as well. “Perhaps,” her father replied, surprising her. “How nice! This is a great walking route, and the doctor recommended that you walk as much as possible.” “And back?” “Taxi.” Without meaning to, Elisheva found herself talking tersely, like her father. She smiled, and so did he. He must have also noticed. “We’ll see,” he said. And they continued their slow walk. “Everyone will be thrilled to see you, Tatty, and for my part, we don’t even have to order you a taxi for the way back; you can stay with us. I think the nursing home is really wondering why you’re still there. It looked like Emmanuel was really angry at me, as if —” she smiled bitterly “— as if he wants to get you out of there, so he persuaded you to buy the raffle tickets.” “Maybe.” He smiled. “You think so?” Her smile morphed

48 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 22, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

into a laugh. “Because I simply can’t imagine that there is anyone in the world who would want to get rid of my father! Besides, it’s one thing to persuade you to buy the tickets, but I don’t think he was also able to arrange for you to actually win.” She continued walking in silence alongside her father, watching his cautious steps. “I…” she began again, but then fell silent. “The truth is…” She just could not organize her thoughts into a coherent sentence. Her father continued walking patiently. He appeared to be studying the busy traffic on the road to his left, but Elisheva knew that he was listening to her every word. “It sounds strange,” she said finally. “But what would you say, Tatty, if I would tell you that I have a feeling deep down that this apartment that we won… well, it’s not really true?” He turned to look at her. The words crammed into one another in Elisheva’s throat for a few seconds. “How many tickets did you buy?” “Fifty. One for Miri, one for Tzippy, and forty-eight for you.” “So statistically, we did have a chance.” “Yes,” he said, after a pause, and then turned to look at a tall group of buildings at the end of the block. “And it worked.” “Right, it worked.” She also fixed her

gaze on the large porch whose glass wall was gleaming in the setting sun. Their porch. “Just like it worked out with Tzippy and Peretz’s wedding, and with the silver yad that someone planted in our kitchen, and the sale of the cuckoo clock…” He looked thoughtful, and then sighed. “Is it hard for you to walk, Tatty?” she asked quickly. “No, no.” “Because we’ll be there in a minute.” He didn’t sigh again, but he didn’t say anything either. They walked the rest of the way at a slower pace, then went up the elevator and entered the bustling house. Only once her father was seated at the table, leafing through a school report that Esty was showing him, did he suddenly raise his head and say, “Strange.” “What’s strange?” Esty asked in alarm. “It was the best report in the whole class, Zeidy!” He smiled at her for a minute, but then turned his gaze to his daughter. Elisheva set down a bowl with finely diced vegetable salad, seasoned with lemon juice and salt. She looked back at him. “You were answering me, Tatty, right?” “Yes,” he said somberly. “It’s strange.” “That’s what I’m saying. So, of course, it is definitely possible that it’s just an amazing string of coincidences. Obviously, I know that there are no real ‘coincidences’ in the world; what I mean is that it’s possible that Hashem sent us all these things in the most natural way, without any people getting involved. The question is if that is really the case.” “And if not?” he asked as he looked at the salad. “Thank you.” “You’re welcome. And if not? Well… I would want very much to know the motivation of the people who did it.” “Did what, Mommy?” Surrounded by her children, Elisheva preferred not to speak openly. She looked at her father, and he gazed back at her with understanding. Then he made a bracha and began to eat. Only when he went down to the taxi that they had ordered for him did he raise the subject again. “Should I speak to Emmanuel?” he asked. “Yes, thank you, Tatty,” she said. “I thought about it a lot since Pesach, and I want to try and probe a bit more into who this Korman fellow who passed away was. We checked into him quickly at the time, but maybe it wasn’t enough. We pretty much trusted the lawyer who reached out to us.” “And the cuckoo clock? And the yad?” She spread her hands. “I don’t have a way to check those things out now. But if,” here her eyes suddenly sparkled, “we suddenly get another mysterious gift, I

will work very hard to find out exactly where it is coming from. For some reason, I have a feeling that it would also be connected to Emmanuel, and to Attorney Rosenblit.” “Why?” The taxi honked loudly even before it came to a complete stop. “Why it would be connected to the two of them?” “No, why you would want to find out.” She opened the door for him. “I don’t want handouts, Tatty,” she whispered. ***** “I gave him a check for thirty thousand; I’m sure they will do good things with it,” Gideon said on the plane as he reclined his seat. “Baruch Hashem, we’re going home. I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep, but I’ll try.” “Don’t you want to eat something first?” Blumi asked, glancing at the meals that had been placed in front of them. “In case you didn’t notice, you haven’t eaten a thing since four o’clock. The gabbai came, and then we left for the airport. Later there will be the whole tumult of landing, and you won’t find time to eat.” He glanced at the food and chose an apple and two tangerines. “You can eat this processed hamburger, Batsheva.” He smiled at his daughter. “And take mine as well. Anyway,” he turned back to his wife, “I also gave him money for the Halabi minyan in Be’er Sheva. He said he knows them.” “Your mother will think it’s irresponsible to transfer money like that.” “My mother will be happy that I gave them money; it doesn’t matter how,” Gideon said. “But I’m sure he’ll give it over. He’s totally fine.” “I don’t trust anyone anymore,” Blumi said with a trace of bitterness. Batsheva’s eardrums tensed. She sat up straighter and glanced at her mother out of the corner of her eye. “No one at all?” “Well, not exactly no one, but… but certainly not people who look perfectly fine even though I really don’t know them at all.” “Nu. I got to know him already. And besides, I have his name and address.” Blumi fell into a long, somewhat sorrowful silence. Batsheva made a note to herself: Someone had violated her mother’s trust. Someone whose name and address she did not know. She wondered what it was all about.

“So, of course, it is definitely possible that it’s just an amazing string of coincidences. The question is if that is really the case.”

Sanders Withdraws From Presidential Race THE PULSE: In a conference call with his campaign

staff, Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders announced that he was ending his run for the Democratic presidential nomination. This is Sanders’ second failed attempt to win the Democratic nomination. Sanders ran a strong campaign and, for a while, assumed the status of Democratic frontrunner. However, Joe Biden’s strong performances in South Carolina and the ensuing Super Tuesday contests proved to be too much to overcome. Sanders recognized that his candidacy was no longer viable and ceded the race to Biden.

52 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 22, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

THE IMPACT: Biden is now the only Democratic candidate left standing and is the presumptive nominee. However, Bernie Sanders remains a force for left-wing, progressive and socialist policies within the Democratic party. While his candidacy has ended and much of his platform rejected, his influence will undoubtedly remain. His followers remain a significant constituency within the Democratic party, and their concerns will need to be addressed by the Democratic candidate for president. The focus that Sanders and his supporters placed on raising the minimum wage, access to health care, and environmental sustainability will continue to shift the terms of debate within the Democratic party and beyond.

President Obama and Bernie Sanders Endorse Joe Biden for President THE PULSE: President Obama announced that he

was throwing his support behind the candidacy of Joe Biden. Obama’s endorsement came one day after Bernie Sanders declared that he was endorsing Joe Biden for president. THE IMPACT: The endorsements of Obama and Sanders are hardly a surprise, as there is no longer anyone challenging Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination. With these endorsements, Biden will be able to tap into the extensive political networks of both Obama and Sanders and will be able to deploy them to help increase his support with their legions of supporters.

Vice President Sweepstakes Begin THE PULSE: Joe Biden will now focus his attention on choosing a vice presidential running mate. Biden has publicly promised to select a female candidate. Here are some of the pros and cons of of the leading candidates: GOVERNOR GRETCHEN WHITMER: Gretchen

Whitmer is the Governor of Michigan. She would bring tangible advantages to the ticket, as she is the governor of a state that Trump flipped and won by a small margin in 2016. She has also led an effective response to the COVID-19 outbreak in her state. Her hands-on approach to the crisis can serve to blunt an advantage that President Trump will likely have over Joe Biden. On the other hand, Governor Whitmer hails from the same moderate wing of the Democratic party as Joe Biden and would do little to energize a disenchanted progressive base. Additionally, moving too quickly from the governor of a hard-hit state to a vice presidential candidate may be perceived as a dereliction of duty and could smack of using COVID-19 for political purposes. SENATOR KAMALA HARRIS: California Senator Kamala Harris brings the advantage of being an African American woman. Biden received overwhelming support from African Americans in South Carolina, and they helped her secure one of the greatest political comebacks in recent memory. Harris also appeals to the progressive wing of the party, and Biden can ben-

efit from some enhanced appeal to that constituency. The drawback with Harris as a vice presidential candidate is that she hails from California, which is already solidly Democratic. Furthermore, Senator Harris has not had an executive role in dealing with COVID-19. Additionally, Harris has a checkered record as San Francisco district attorney. Many are critical of policies that she promoted during her tenure and feel that her policies adversely affected minorities under her jurisdiction. SENATOR ELIZABETH WARREN: The Massachu-

setts senator would be a boon for progressives in the Democratic party. She would add excitement to the ticket among the liberal base of the party. Senator Warren is also the candidate most responsible for taking down Michael Bloomberg’s centrist challenge to Joe Biden. However, Senator Warren did not initially throw her support behind Biden and took her time coming around to support his candidacy. Furthermore, her state of Massachusetts is already solidly in the Democratic column. Additionally, some of her more progressive policy positions could be a cause of concern for centrist voters who would consider voting for Biden over Trump. Biden, who is 77, would be the oldest candidate ever to win the presidency, and having Senator Warren a heartbeat from the Oval Office may cause centrist supporters of Biden to rethink their vote. SENATOR AMY KLOBUCHAR: The Minnesota senator is an ideological fit for Joe Biden. She performed well in the primaries and received accolades for her debate performances. She can also help Biden broaden his appeal in the Midwest. In 2016, Trump narrowly lost Minnesota and won neighboring Wisconsin; Klobuchar can help Biden in both of these states. Klobuchar is extremely popular in her home state. Her husband recovered from COVID-19, and that experience makes the pandemic a personal experience for her. The downside to choosing Klobuchar is that she will not broaden Biden’s appeal to progressives or minorities. THE IMPACT: The VP selection is often accompanied

by much hoopla, but the real impact of choice is usually limited. Senator Joe Lieberman could not deliver Florida for Al Gore. Governor Sarah Palin failed to energize the McCain campaign, and Paul Ryan could not bolster Mitt Romney’s credentials with fiscal conservatives. The race is ultimately between the two candidates at the top of the ticket, though the age of both candidates in this year’s election may make the vice presidential choice more important than it usually is.

THE IMPACT: President Trump knows that a pro-

longed shutdown will cause irreparable harm to the U.S. economy. He recognizes the need to get people back to work as soon as possible. However, doctors and scientists on his coronavirus task force are tempering his desire to reopen the economy. Many Democratic governors are also pushing back on any chance of an early return to regular economic activity. They fear that there will be a human cost to any quick rollback of social distancing guidelines.

THE IMPACT: Senator Grassley (R-IA) led a bipartisan

effort to demand that the president explain the basis for his firing of Atkinson. The letter also stressed the need to ensure that there is protection for future IGs who report wrongdoing and that those who report wrongdoing are free from repercussions and not silenced. Eight senators signed the bipartisan letter.

THE PULSE: President Donald Trump fired Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson. IG Atkinson was initially nominated for this position by President Trump in 2017. The reason for the firing is ostensibly due to the fact Atkinson transferred the whistleblower complaint about Trump’s dealings with Ukraine to Congress. IG Atkison was required by law to transfer any allegation that he viewed as credible to Congress.

BEGINNER

THE PULSE: President Trump unveiled a plan to reopen the U.S. economy in planned stages. The proposal leaves the decision to open segments of the economy in the hands of state governors. Many states are still struggling to get the virus under control, and many governors fear that a premature return to normalcy will result in a spike in the rate of infections.

liza Ruhamah Scidmore had never seen something so beautiful as the sakura. Though her wanderlust had caused her to travel extensively, and she’d experienced many wonders of the world, it was the Japanese sakura, the blossoming cherry tree, that stole her heart. For the few short weeks in the spring when the sakura buds blossomed, the delicate flowers crowned the tree, lending an ethereal appearance

to this otherwise earthly object. Its beauty was fleeting; it seemed almost as if should one but blink, they would miss it. But that fact served to enhance, rather than detract from, its ability to enchant its viewers. “The blooming cherry tree is the most ideally, wonderfully beautiful tree that nature has to show, and its short-lived glory makes the enjoyment the keener and more poignant,” she wrote in an essay about the sakura she so loved. Her greatest dream was to share the blossoming Japanese cherry tree with America, the country of her birth. It was a dream 24 years in coming, but it was one that would be well worth the wait.

Trying to Bring the Blossoms Home A visit to Japan that left her intrigued by the unique life and beauty of the place was the catalyst for Scidmore’s efforts in procuring Japanese cherry trees to beautify her native Washington, D.C. To that end, she began reaching out to officials back in 1885, offering her idea as a way to dress up otherwise bland or unsightly areas of the nation’s capital. One by one, however, her idea was rejected. One official declined her request on the grounds that police-

men would be busy day and night chasing little boys away from the fruit-laden trees in search of cherries. When she explained that the trees produced only miniscule fruits that even birds scorn and that would serve to feed humans only in case of famine, the official exclaimed, “What? No cherries?! What good is that sort of cherry tree?” Once again, her petition was declined. It seemed as if the sakura would stay in Japan.

Fans Join Forces Eliza Scidmore wasn’t the only world traveler in that age who had seen and appreciated the flowering beauty of the sakura. Not too far away, in Chevy Chase, Maryland, lived David Fairchild, plant explorer for the Department of Agriculture. His enthusiasm for exotic flora resulted in his introducing to America the mango from India, the avocado from Chile, and the peach from China. His wife, however — the daughter of Alexander Graham Bell — had her eyes set on only one tree. Like Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore, Marian Fairchild (nicknamed “Daisy”) absolutely adored the sakura, which she called by the name we now know it as: the cherry blossom tree. As a gift to his wife, and also as an agriculture experiment, Fairchild ordered around 100 sakuras from Japan to plant on his own property. In the spring of 1906, his private cherry blossom trees bloomed for the first time, drawing masses of amazed onlookers. At that point, David Fairchild ordered 300 more trees to be given as a gift to the city of Chevy Chase. By 1908, Fairchild had set his sights on the capital, his vision falling in line with Scidmore’s. At a public ceremony, Fairchild gave schoolchildren cherry blossom trees to plant in their D.C. schoolyards. Additionally, he gave multiple speeches in the D.C. area, speaking of his travels and the beautiful sakura tree. Each speech ended with a photographic display of a road in Potomac Park that he suggested be lined with cherry blossom trees. Fairchild’s efforts caused the idea to begin germinating in the public’s mind, and it also encouraged his fellow enthusiast Scidmore to develop a plan for bringing 100 trees to the area per year. Once the plan was formed, she reached out to first lady Helen Taft and requested permission to proceed with the city beautification plans. It took only two days for Scidmore to receive an enthusiastic reply from Mrs. Taft. Having previously spent time in Japan, Taft had seen for herself the exquisite sakuras and understood what they would mean for the country. Beyond introducing a lovely new plant that would increase appreciation for the

capital city, importing the trees would enhance the strained relationship with Japan that had developed because of widespread American discrimination of Japanese immigrants. President Taft welcomed the opportunity with open arms. Right after presidential approval was obtained to secure the trees, a famous Japanese chemist named Dr. Jokichi Takamine learned of the plan to buy the trees while on a trip to D.C., and he suggested to the Japanese consul that instead of selling the trees to the U.S. government, they should offer them as a token of friendship. The consul was thrilled with the idea, and in the name of the city of Tokyo, upped the amount of trees being sent from a meager 300 to 2,000! The United States accepted the offer and prepared for the shipment.

rying crate, Fairchild was dismayed to admit that the trees looked sickly. Their roots had been shortened too extensive-

Each speech ended with a photographic display of a road in Potomac Park that he suggested be lined with cherry blossom trees.

A Diplomatic Disaster? It was December of 1909 when the ship carrying the cherry blossom trees docked in Seattle, Washington. The trees were unloaded and placed onto railcars for the thirteen-day trek to the capital. When they arrived, Fairchild was overjoyed. His childhood friend, Charles Marlatt, however, was highly unenthusiastic about the trees’ arrival. As the head of the Department of Entomology, he was terribly concerned that the foreign species would carry pests and diseases that could infiltrate American agriculture and wreak havoc on local plant life. His fears were not unfounded. When Fairchild and Marlatt pried open the first tree-car-

ly in order to enable the large stock to fit aboard the transporting ship, and this had caused them trauma. Additionally, Marlatt found multiple severe insect infestations. There was no choice but to destroy the trees. But would it, they all wondered, destroy the delicate relationship with Japan, as well? On the 28th of January, the trees were propped up in a tepee-like manner and set aflame. It was likely not by accident that reporters discovered the burning of the trees and flocked to the site, photographing the event and writing of it in articles that appeared the next day in major American publications. Washington braced for a backlash from Japan, for hadn’t they suffered a great insult? David Fairchild headed to the hotel where Yukio Ozaki, the Tokyo mayor, was staying, prepared to apologize with a humble heart. But the Japanese mayor’s reaction left Americans scratching their heads in confusion. Instead of being infuriated over the burning of the trees, mayor Ozaki himself apologized, telling Fairchild that the action taken had been correct. If the trees had infected American flora, he explained, the Japanese would be forever pained that they had given a faulty gift. He said that if America would allow them, Japan would like to send another gift of more and better trees. America accepted the offer. On March 27, 1912, first lady Helen Taft and the wife of the Japanese Ambassador, Mrs. Iwa Chinda, planted the first two cherry blossom trees in Washington, D.C. Fairchild, too, took part in the planting, and Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore, a woman of long-awaited dreams, looked on, her heart aburst with satisfaction. Finally, her beloved sakura had come to crown her homeland.

The Cheery Cherry Blossom Tree At a Glance Cherry blossom trees bloom once a year, in early spring, for several weeks.

Despite the word “cherry” in their name, cherry blossom trees aren’t praised for their fruit. They only produce tiny, barely edible cherries.

There are roughly 600 types of cherry blossom trees in the world. Petal shape, coloring and blooming periods mark the differences between the types. The most popular type is the Yoshino cherry tree.

While cherry blossom trees are commonly thought of as being pink, blossoms can be pink, white, cream or even green.

The cherry blossom is the national flower of Japan.

The oldest known Yoshino cherry tree was planted in

76 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 22, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Japan in 1882.

Cherry blossom trees grow about 2 to 4 feet every year, until they reach about 40 to 50 feet tall.

Different varieties of cherry blossoms can have anywhere from 5 to 300 petals per flower!

Many cherry blossom trees emit a fragrance similar to that of crushed almonds.

Cherry blossom trees are not incredibly strong; in fact, a recent visitor to D.C.’s cherry blossom trees attempted to climb one and snapped off multiple parts. The tree will now be uprooted and replaced.

Cherry blossom petals are edible and are used in many Japanese recipes.

And cherry blossom photoshoots! Because what’s spring without a cherry blossom photoshoot? Spring, in general, is a wonderful time to take family photos. The weather is warm, but not brutally hot, mosquitoes are not yet out, and the light is usually mild and pretty for the camera. But add in a magical canopy of velvety pink cherry blossoms, and you’re taking things to a whole new level! Here are some tips on how to get the best pictures during this season.

WHERE TO LOOK

The first step here is obviously to find a tree under which to photograph your family. What most people don’t know, though, is that this can be the most fun part of the process! Here are some tips on where to look:

Check your own backyard Sometimes our own treasures are completely overlooked. If you’ve got a blossoming tree, good for you! And it doesn’t have to be specifically a cherry tree; apple blossoms, magnolias and dogwood are super beautiful too!

Neighborhood watch If you don’t have a blossoming tree on your own property, the best place to look is around your neighborhood. Trees on your block or in a friendly neighbor’s yard are much less likely to be surrounded by crowds of people jostling for a photo op, which is a very real scenario in most public parks! Take some slow walks with your kids, and see who can spot the prettiest blooms! I’ve got the best memories of slow strolls with my kids during previous seasons. It’s a great way to get out, get some sunshine and enjoy each other’s company.

Drive-through options Keep an eye out when you’re in the car, and take note of different blossoming trees you see around town. It could be in the school yard, on a side street, or even in a commercial parking lot. All of these are great spaces to find your perfect tree.

Parks, parks, parks! Visit your favorite local parks and look out for blooming trees! There are also some public parks that are known for rows and rows of stunning cherry blossoms. These are usually crowded, though, so be prepared!

80 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 22, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Here’s how to choose the perfect tree for your photo-op: • Choose a tree with branches that reach low to the ground so that you’ll get more color behind your subjects. This can be a young, short tree, a tree with low branches, or a weeping cherry tree that grows in an umbrella shape. • Alternatively, you can get someone to gently pull one of the longer, more flexible branches down to the ground on one side so you get a nice arch to frame your subject. (Of course, be gentle to avoid damaging the tree!) • Look for a spot where the space under the tree isn’t raked, landscaped or “cleaned up” too often. A little bit into the season, the petals begin to fall and create a magical carpet under the tree. That looks magnificent in photos, so take advantage! • Ideally, look for more than one tree in a row. This way you can seat your subjects under one, and still have others pinking up the background. • If you get a day late in the season, when the petals are constantly falling to the ground, your photos will be even more magical! But don’t let it get too late, or you run the risk of missing the blooms to a rain or late frost...

WHAT TO WEAR

Now that you’ve got your tree, it’s time to plan the next step… the wardrobe! Clothes make a huge difference in any photoshoot, but when it comes to cherry blossom shoots, they actually add a whole lot to the overall aesthetic. Here are some general pointers I like to share with my clients: • Keep it timeless. Think of your photoshoot as creating a painting. What clothing would fit? Which styles would add to the look and feel you want, and which styles or colors would distract from it? I personally like to use clothing that could have been worn 50 years ago… and will still be beautiful 50 years from now. • Look for textures that add flow and will catch light and movement. For example, a thin, starched cotton dress will poof up and show movement better than a polo fabric. Likewise, tulle or lace will catch light better than a jersey knit. • Make sure the clothing is appropriate for the weather so the kids don’t get too cold or hot. Uncomfortable

kids is a recipe for disaster. Thin summer fabrics or short sleeves can work wonderfully if layered up with cute little cardigans or knit blankets when the evening chill sets in. • For cherry blossom shoots in particular, I like to keep the clothing to pastels, pale neutrals and whites. This helps keep the overall look light, airy and whimsical. • Another thing I love to do for cherry blossom sessions is include some pink in the wardrobe. It helps bring the colors through and plays up the blooms. This also gives the illusion of more blossoms, which is super helpful in a case where you might have only one tree to work with and not so much pink in the background. • Include the blossoms in your wardrobe. Create a wreath, tuck some flowers into a hairdo, or have your subject hold a dainty sprig of blooms. This is a beautiful, classy and natural way to bring it all together.

WHEN TO DO THE PHOTOSHOOT Timing is everything. Get it done! Cherry blossoms bloom for a very short amount of time each year, so you really have to catch them before they’re gone. It can get a little tricky: Too early and the tree’s just brown; too late and everything’s green again. The time of year for that perfect sweet spot varies according to the weather, so keep peeking at your tree every day, and be prepared to get ready as soon as the trees are!

Time of day matters too! The number-one secret to any successful photo is light, light, light. You can find the most beautiful backdrop and do the most creative poses and angles, but if your light is off, it takes the whole photo along with it.

Here’s a little tip about light: The lower the sun is, the more shade there is, and the softer the light. This means that the best time to get even, magical light is early in the morning, before the sun gets very high up in the sky; or late in the afternoon, an hour or two before sunset (the golden hour). Late mornings and early afternoons can also be okay in open shade, but you definitely want to avoid noontime when the sun is very high up, because the harsh shadows will draw lines across your subjects’ faces.

How do you know if the light is soft enough? Here’s a trick: Place your subjects in a shady area. (If there’s harsh sunlight glaring directly onto them, they’ll look overexposed and too bright in the pictures, so avoid that.) Now look at their faces. Do you see lines or shapes drawn by light and shadow? If you do, the light is too harsh. Soft light creates soft, graduated areas between light and shadow, which is exactly what you want in most portraits.

82 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 22, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Which way to face? Deciding which way to set up your shoot depends on two factors, in order of importance: 1. Light 2. Background As mentioned earlier, light is the most important factor in any composition. Here’s how to check which way the light works best: Place your subject under the tree, and slowly move in a circle around them. Keep looking at the catchlights in their eyes. When they’re facing the direction that throws the most light at them, the catchlights (in this case, the sky or light mirrored in their eyes) will be bigger and brighter than they were when facing the other directions. Check that your subject’s skin looks smooth and well lit, with no blotchy sun spots or harsh lines on it. Now you know which way to set everyone up! (The trick above is for finding great frontal light. If you’re more advanced with lighting portraits, you can try backlighting your subjects and using a reflector to throw some more light in their faces for some awesome spring photoshoots.) If the light is equally good in two directions, choose the one with the more appealing background.

What to do if the background isn’t everything you hoped for? Here are some tips for getting the most of the blossoms — and the least possible of other distracting elements. 1. Move whatever clutter you’re able to physically take away. Do you see garbage cans, plastic chairs, bikes? Move them over.

2. Most newer cameras (and all SLRs) have the option of lowering the aperture and blurring out the background. Remember this rule: The lower the number, the longer the lens, and the closer you are to the subject, the less of the background will be in focus. You can get only your subjects and some blossoms in focus, and the rest will just be smooth splotches of color. Go for it! 3. Get smart about your camera angles: Get low and shoot up. Get the distractions out of the background by sitting down low on the ground and aiming the camera up. This way, all you see behind your subjects are beautiful blossoms and smiling skies. Get high and shoot down. Short photo subjects? Use that to your advantage. Remember that magical petal blanket? It photographs so beautifully! If the tree has low branches as well, go up higher and shoot down through them. The end result will be fantastic! Shoot tight. Can you get a detail of your kids with some flowers? Or maybe focus in on just part of a tree? The idea is to narrow your frame so you crop out as much of the busy background as possible. Shoot through. Scarce blossoms in the frame? Here’s a neat trick to pink things up: Grab a sprig of blossoms and hold it in front of your camera lens. It’ll look like you’re shooting through the branches of another tree! Depending on how far from the lens you hold it, it’ll show up either as a full branch of blossoms or as smooth pink blurs that’ll add a magical touch of color to your photo.

That’s it! Now you’re all set up for a DIY photoshoot! I hope your cherry blossom photography sessions turn out to be as fun and magical as mine are! This article is based on a shiur by Rabbi Yechezkel Elias

There are moments in life that give us pause. Moments to stop and reflect on the goodness we encounter day in and day out, to appreciate Hakadosh Baruch Hu’s kindness of which we may have lost focus. One such moment comes with the advent of spring as we watch a barren tree suddenly come to life, erupting in bloom, heralding a fresh season of growth. At this instant of inspiration, Chazal charged us with seizing the moment to focus on all the detailed goodness we receive, and to make a bracha in awareness and appreciation of it. Why specifically on fruit trees more than on any other form of growth? The Aruch Hashulchan points out that, by and large, our core food necessities come from the ground, whereas tree-grown items are generally most enjoyable yet decidedly nonessential. Hakadosh Baruch Hu could very well have sufficed with providing humanity with the mere basics for survival. We could feasibly subsist on grains, potatoes and onions. Yet rather than limiting our experience to necessities, He went further and provided us with a whole range of delectable fruits simply to provide us with a most enjoyable life experience1. It is when we realize just how much He does for us that we truly stop to take stock and to acknowledge and thank Him not merely for the specific tree, but for all the incredibly varied and detailed goodness He creates for us2.

Who makes this bracha? • This bracha is equally incumbent upon men and women3. As well, it is appropriate to educate children to make this bracha too. • The bracha is to be recited only once per year. Even when traveling to a different region with completely different timing of seasons, one should not make the bracha if he has done so previously. • It is not necessary to say this bracha together with others. Bearing in mind that one should not postpone performance of a mitzvah, one who wishes to fulfill the mitzvah in a form of “birov am,” beautified by a crowd, is allowed to wait, but should only do so if he has a clear option to accomplish this. Of note: Birov am is sufficiently achieved with three participants.

What is the bracha to be said?

4

What do I have to see?

• One fruit tree beginning to blossom5. • The tree must actually have blossoms; it is not sufficient to see leaves. • If one did not make a bracha on the first sighting, one can still make a bracha on any subsequent sighting, as long as the tree seen when saying the bracha is still in the blossom (flowering) stage. • If one has not yet seen any blossoming trees, one can make a bracha on this initial sighting even if the tree he is seeing is beyond the blossom stage and is already growing fruit, up until the point where the fruits are completely grown. If the fruits on a tree are already fully developed, the bracha can no longer be said on that tree. • It is preferable, when presented with a choice, to avoid making a bracha on a tree of orlah, a tree within its initial three years. This applies only to a tree that is certainly orlah6; when unsure if the tree is orlah, the bracha may be recited. • Sight through glass is considered regular sight,

In a similar vein, the elements of color and texture in our food, as well, provide no nutritional benefit; they are gifted to us simply to enhance our enjoyment.

If one said the bracha with the incorrect wording of davar, the bracha is nonetheless valid and should not be repeated.

4

The consensus of the poskim is that it is perfectly ideal to make the bracha on a single tree. If one has equal choice, at the same time, of making the bracha on a single tree or on a group of two or more trees, there may be preference for the option of multiple trees, but one should certainly not delay the mitzvah at all for this reason.

and as such, the bracha may be recited when seeing the blossoming tree through glasses or through a house or car window.

When can the bracha be said? • Seeing a tree bloom in the beginning of the season qualifies for the bracha, regardless of the Hebrew month7. This can generally occur as early as late Adar (as is common in Eretz Yisroel), during Nissan (as is common in the New York area), or as late as Iyar and the beginning of Sivan (as is common in Montreal). In the Southern Hemisphere, the bracha would likewise be made whenever the spring season begins in that particular area. Ultimately, the timing is dependent on locational climate, as well as specific type of tree. • It is entirely ideal to make the bracha on any day of the week, Shabbos or yom tov included8 9. • As long as one has a clear view of the blossoming tree, one may recite the bracha at any time of day or night. • The bracha should be made at the first opportunity and not be postponed. Some little people in this house were not happy. And, truth be told, neither was I. The Worldwide Corona Stay-at-Home Vacation had been on for four days thus far, and multiple family members (namely, me) were losing little bits of sanity at a frightening speed. That’s when Camp Corona was born. 92 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 22, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Supposedly, as a loving mother and trained therapist, my goal was to take a potentially traumatic period in my children’s lives and recreate it as something that will be looked back upon as fabulous family time. Right. That was the official version. The honest version is that I realized it was the only way to survive this. And you all know what “this” is. Wherever you may live, we’ve all been thrown into this shocking and crazy situation together. And if there’s anything these corona days have taught me, it’s how similar we all are, and how normal and universal our struggles are. And so, for precisely this reason, I’ll share with you what we did. Because it worked. It worked so well, in fact, that baruch Hashem, not only are my children the most enthusiastic campers on the block — so is their mother! We are all having the time of our lives. Now that was something I’d never even put a bid for! Here’s the thing: This situation is bizarre, frightening, strange and impossible. All true. But it’s also here to stay — for another while still, it seems. So we can keep fighting it. It’s what most of us do when confronted with a sudden upheaval to our familiar, peaceful lives (yeah, remember when just Pesach cleaning was “peaceful”?). We can do that instinctive fight-or-flight response, whatever it may mean for each of us. And the result? We will waste tons of energy for no good reason (because it won’t help), create scars on our children’s little hearts (because overly wrung-out mothers can do that), damage family relationships (because kids feel when they’re not wanted), and find little bits of our brains strewn around the house at the end of another endless and hopeless day. Cross this choice out; it’s not worth it. Or we can just accept that this is what it is, and begin

to enjoy it. Yes, it may seem overwhelming to do that — on top of babysitting all the kids all day. Yes, it may seem even wrong when so many people, including some who are very beloved to us, are suffering. And yes, it will take lots of energy and big smiles and head-counselory cheering from us. But it’s so, so worth it. I have three weeks of Camp Corona, and dozens of photos, to prove it. To myself, too, obviously. So yes, I spend time every night coming up with a full program for the following day, but the joy that fills this house and the laughs and smiles and genuinely loving atmosphere between the siblings (!) make it all not just worth it, but even enjoyable.

Here is what our day looks like: The morning is relatively calm and peaceful, with the kids still managing to keep themselves busy by following the large schedule printout posted prominently on the wall. Getting dressed, breakfast, davening, halachah shiur with Tatty, some play time, another shiur with Tatty, some more play time, and it’s just about time for lunch. (Amazing how enticing PlayMags can become when you only get to play with them during a predetermined slot of time!) After lunch, our activities begin. At this point the kids are bored of entertaining themselves, and it’s up to me to keep them on their toes. We race from one activity to the next, alternating between high-energy races, quiet arts and crafts, hysterical family memory games, shared Tehillim recitals, and animated exercise sessions, depending on the kids’ energy levels and needs at any moment. Supper contains a different surprise each night, after which the kids fill out their Corona Diaries, post letters to each other’s “mailboxes,” prepare fun sheets to include in the weekly family magazine, add captions under the daily photos in our giant “photo book” hanging on the wall, or come over to me to share an activity idea for the following day. By the time the day is over, incredible memories (for me, too!) have been formed, the kids are happy and settled, bedtime proceeds quickly, the house is clean (because we all spent it together doing specific activities), and Mommy is still in one piece, more or less. Yes, the coronavirus is a terrible tragedy for the world at large. But in our own children’s little worlds, we can turn it into a warm memory of family, fun and love.

94 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 22, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

While we’re playing and crafting, I try to throw in some therapeutic games and discussions to help the kids process the situation and the varying pieces of news that we all hear — some of which I wish the little ones wouldn’t. Here is a favorite that has since gone viral, and which my children (even my fifteen-year-old!) enjoyed. And I love what it did for the younger kids — it’s a little hard to be afraid of a fuzzy Mr. Corona with googly eyes! Creating your own Mr. Corona:

STEP 1: Cut out cardboard circles with holes in the middle. Take two cardboard circles and hold them together. Take a long piece of yarn and begin wrapping it through the hole and around the cardboard circles. Even little kids can handle it if you hold the cardboard pieces for them and just let them thread the yarn in!

STEP 2:

STEP 3:

STEP 4:

Keep wrapping until you reach the desired thickness — preferably until the hole fills up almost completely.

When the piece of yarn finishes, tie another piece and keep going. (You can also make multicolored viruses.)

Once done, cut the yarn at the edges of the circle.

STEP 5:

STEP 6:

STEP 7:

Remove the cardboard pieces.

Now glue eyes onto Mr. Corona. (COVID-19 does have eyes, right?)

Mr. Corona is ready!

Insert a separate long piece of yarn between the two cardboards and tie it around the “lump” of threads in the middle. This will keep it all together as you remove the cardboards.

By: Y. Blooming

The weather is warming, and b’ezras Hashem, before we know it, we’ll be allowed out of our homes to enjoy another sunny summer. Among the most beautiful summer sights are the strikingly colorful butterflies flapping their wings or resting on top of flowers, sipping a nectar drink. Let’s learn a little more about these fascinating little creatures.

How did butterflies get their name? Some people suggest that people used to call them “flutter-bys,” but this seems unlikely. A more plausible explanation is that one of the more common butterfly colors is creamy yellow, a shade most similar to butter. This is backed up by other languages also referring to butterflies with names similar in meaning.

There are around 20,000 known butterfly species. The U.S. and Canada are home to about 750 species. Dozens of butterfly species can be found in our area, and members of the New York City Butterfly Club (yes, that’s a real thing) have identified around 120 species within a 50-mile radius of Manhattan.

The metamorphosis of a caterpillar as it turns into a butterfly is one of nature’s most fascinating phenomena. When the butterfly egg hatches, a caterpillar emerges. It then proceeds to eat the leaves it was born on until it gains enough weight. Once ready, the caterpillar will transform into a pupa, or chrysalis, and will rearrange its internal tissue into a seemingly new creature. Soon, an adult butterfly will emerge. After a few hours of pumping blood into its wings, this butterfly will be able to take flight.

A butterfly consumes nectar from flowers by using its tube-like “tongue,” called a proboscisis, which acts like a straw that sucks the sugary drinks into their bodies. Interestingly, a butterfly’s “taste buds” are actually located in its feet, and these receptors are able to sense if there are any dissolving sugars in a flower. Female butterflies use these sensors to tap on leaves and see if their young caterpillars will be able to safely eat them. They use a natural glue-like chemical to help their eggs stick to leaves so that the baby caterpillars will be able to eat them when they are born.

In addition to making nature more beautiful, butterflies serve an important ecological purpose. Since they fly from flower to flower, they help pollinate the flowers so that they can produce seeds. They are also a food source to many predators like birds, spiders and some small mammals.

Many butterflies migrate to warmer climates as the weather turns colder. The monarch butterfly will migrate up to 2,500 miles away, from northern United States to Mexico, Florida and Southern California!

It's all about transitional pieces to suit any season.
