(Re: Money Habits, Issue 231) I want to thank you and commend you for raising this topic in such a beautiful, real and Torah’dig way. I was raised with the opposite view in regard to finances, and it took years of hard work to change my perspective. Baruch Hashem, now I know that money is not a bad thing and that Hashem has enough to go around. We only need to submit and be a keili to receive His blessings. A Grateful Reader
RE: WRONG TIME FOR WRONG NUMBERS (Inbox, Issue 230) To “Awoken at Dawn” I want to say: I’m sure there’s not much comfort in knowing you’re not the only one trying to catch a few more winks and attempting to go about the morning routine amid the intermittent ringing, but I’m with you. A practical suggestion to all mothers out there who want to minimize chances of gezel sheinah: Preprogram your phones with the phone numbers dialed at unusual hours of the day or night (think a shiur/ hotline that gets you through that final stretch in the wee hours). By ruling out human error during dialing at times when our memory is not at its best, you may be saving the day for a fellow Yiddishe mother. P.F.
A SKIN SOLUTION (Re: The Winter Hunt for Health, Issue 230) Last winter my son had an interesting skin issue on one part of his face. I tried everything, from natural manuka honey to cortisone cream, to all types of oils and moisturizers in between, but nothing seemed to work. When I found the exact same thing on the exact same

spot a few weeks ago, I decided to wait until the winter is over and not waste my time and energy on trying new ideas. But after reading Ruchy Reese’s article about dry air, I decided that I have nothing to lose by trying a humidifier. I opted for the cheapest one and got it prescribed by my pediatrician. After two nights of sleeping with a humidifier next to his bed, my son’s skin is, baruch Hashem, completely healed! Thank you, Ruchy Reese and The Monsey View, for your informative and interesting articles. Keep them coming! A Monsey View Fan
YOUR VOICE THE ULTIMATE PROTECTION Thank you for giving us a place to voice our thoughts. In light of the recent attacks on Yidden and the increased police presence, I’d like to share something I remember hearing from Rav Avigdor Miller, zt”l, which is so pertinent now. Rav Miller asked: What was the difference between the outcome of the story of Purim and the outcome of the Holocaust? Both resha’im set as their goal “l’hashmid il’harog il’aved es kol haYehudim.” But why did the latter partially succeed and the first one not? Rav Miller answered this with the following explanation: During World War II, we had politicians, newspapers, etc., so our thoughts were distracted from the only Source our salvation could come from. During the times of Mordechai and Esther, on the other hand, we had no options other than the tried-and-true method: “Lech kenos es kol haYehudim” — to daven and to do teshuvah. Please, let’s not make the same mistake again. This increase of police presence cannot possibly truly protect us. Of course, we are very grateful to them for their honest efforts, but our only protection comes from Above. So while we should take sensible, practical steps, let that not take the place of focusing all of our energy Heavenward. Anonymous

PA RS H A S SHEMOS Morah Stein’s fourth grade class was behaving very chutzpah’dig one day. Despite repeated warnings, their behavior only worsened, so Morah Stein cancelled recess for the entire class for the rest of the week — four recesses in total. Instead of spending a half-hour each day on the playground and enjoying their snacks, the girls would have to remain in their seats and write essays on the importance of respect. During the first missed recess, the subdued girls quietly wrote their essays without complaint. By the second missed recess, the girls were already feeling the effects of the punishment, especially as the window in the fourth grade classroom provided an excellent view of the inviting playground. By ten minutes into their third missed recess, the girls were utterly miserable. A portion of the class began to whine and complain about their hands aching, about their hunger, and about the torture of not getting to play on the playground. “This is ridiculous! cried one girl.
“This punishment isn’t going to teach me to be more respectful — just the opposite! whined another. At the same time, another faction of the class had a completely different response. They understood that their teacher had been perfectly justified in punishing them, but nevertheless, they, too, felt they could no longer tolerate the missed recesses combined with the essay writing. They politely raised their hands and asked to approach Morah Stein. When they reached Morah Stein’s desk, the girls sincerely apologized and asked her to please release the class from further punishment. Morah Stein saw in their earnest faces and polite demeanors that the lesson had really been learned. They were indeed displaying more respectful behavior. Morah Stein then agreed to cancel the remainder of the punishment, and without further ado, dismissed the class to the playground. It says in this week’s parsha, “Vayehi vayamim harabim haheim vayamas melech Mitzrayim vayei’anchu v’nei Yisroel min ha’avodah vayizaku vata’al shavasam el haElokim min ha’avodah. Vayishma Elokim es na’akasam vayizkor Elokim es briso es Avraham es Yitzchok v’es Yaakov — And it came to pass in those many days that the king of Mitzrayim died, and Bnei Yisroel sighed from the labor, and they cried out, and their cry ascended to Elokim from the labor. Elokim heard their cry, and Elokim remembered His covenant with Avraham, with Yitzchok and with Yaakov. (Shemos 2:23–24) The Kli Yakar points out that instead of writing “vayei’anchu v’nei Yisroel min ha’avodah vayizaku — B’nei Yisroel sighed from the labor, and they cried out, the pasuk could have stated, ““vayei’anchu vayizaku v’nei Yisroel min ha’avodah — Bnei Yisroel
It is certainly okay to cry when we suffer, but we must cry appropriately.

sighed and they cried out from the labor.” Why did the Torah instead word this statement in two separate statements, one about sighing and one about crying out? The Kli Yakar explains that there were two factions among Bnei Yisroel. The righteous group cried out in tefillah, davening to Hashem to save them from their suffering. The second group cried out in complaint, not in tefillah like the first group. Thus, the pasuk separates the two statements, because they represent the two factions. We also see in the lashon that only the cries of the righteous reached Hashem, and it is their cries to which Hashem listened: “Bnei Yisroel sighed from the labor, and they cried out, and their cry ascended to Elokim from the labor. Elokim heard their cry, and Elokim remembered His covenant with Avraham, with Yitzchok and with Yaakov.” From this, we see that it is certainly okay to cry when we suffer, but we must cry appropriately. We must not complain about our portion in life, but we certainly may cry to Hashem and ask Him to remove our suffering. In fact, it was the cry of the people that triggered the redemption, not the fact of their suffering. The Torah does not say that Hashem saw their suffering and began the redemption, but that Hashem heard the cry. Hashem had been waiting for us to cry out to Him, to daven to Him, before bringing our salvation, just as He waited for Adam Harishon to daven for rain before he brought rain to water the earth. Especially in light of recent events, let us all cry out to Hashem to bring about the geulah sheleimah bimheirah b’yameinu.

In Dual Appearances, Rabbi Rottenberg Offers Brachos in Albany, Makes Public Statement in Monsey Making his first official remarks since the Chanukah machete attack that shook the Jewish community to the core, Rabbi Chaim Leibish Rottenberg delivered the invocation preceding Governor Andrew Cuomo’s State of
the State address and, later the same day, held a press conference outside his home. Rabbi Rottenberg traveled to Albany on January 8, speaking with the governor before the unveiling of Cuomo’s 2020 “Making Progress Happen” agenda, which included a proposal that could have those who perpetuate mass-scale hate crimes facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. Offering his blessings in Albany before the State of the State address, Rabbi Rottenberg uttered a prayer for Cuomo to be guided along a path that would protect the rights of New York’s Jewish community and would promote tolerance for all. Rabbi Rottenberg also noted that while he will never forget the horrors that unfolded in his house on the seventh night of Chanukah, positive memories linger in his mind as well. “I will never forget how, in the face of tragedy, we were blessed by G-d,” said Rabbi Rottenberg, “the miraculous fashion in which the attacker was subdued, which limited what could have been a far worse and fatal event. We pray that Divine Providence should contin-

ue protecting us from evil forces who are out to harm us physically, or from those who are out to attack our Chasidic, traditional way of life and system of education.” Just hours later, Rabbi Rottenberg spoke out again in front of his home, refusing to speak with reporters or to even mention the name of the intruder who entered his home, reported NBC News. “Despite all the horror, we hold strong and stand tall in our faith in the Almighty,” said Rabbi Rottenberg. “The Chasidic people in Rockland and across New York State may look different, dress differently, speak a different language and choose to educate our children according to our traditions — we, like many diverse people of Rockland County, are all created in the image of G-d.” Just one day later, there was another significant press conference in the Monsey area, with Rockland County Human Right Commissioner Constance Frazier introducing a plan to curb acts of hate. Frazier spoke about meeting with elected officials, community leaders, schools, and religious and ethnic groups to implement long- and short-term strategies to end divisiveness. Mentioning both hate speech on social media and New York’s newly enacted bail reform law, Frazier called on elected officials who visited Rockland in the wake of the Chanukah attack to become more involved, stressing the need for changes to be made at the federal level. “Rockland County is the smallest county in the state, and yet the most diverse,” said Frazier. “It is that diversity that will be our strength as we embark on this journey together.”
Chaverim Saves the Day, Lending Command Center to PIP Police and Rescuing Lost Tefillin They pitch in at all hours of the day and night for those in the Yiddishe community in need of assistance of all kinds, but this time around, it was New Jersey law enforcement who found themselves the beneficiaries of Chaverim of Rockland’s services. Yeshiva World News reported that Chaverim has
loaned its mobile command center to the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department whose headquarters were destroyed in a fastmoving four-alarm fire that broke out on January 1. Until a more permanent solution can be found, the Chaverim command center will serve as a temporary base for the department through an arrangement orchestrated by New Jersey police chaplain Rabbi Abe Friedman and Chaverim coordinator Yossi Margaretten. The fire in the historic building broke out in the police chief’s office. Parkway police have said that the blaze was caused by an unidentified electrical problem and is not deemed to be suspicious. Chaverim members went well above and beyond the call of duty in another incident, digging through a truckload of trash to locate a pair of tefillin that had accidentally been discarded. Yeshiva World News also reported that Chaverim members swung into action late last week after a hotline call came in about the missing tefillin. Chaverim coordinator Yossi Margaretten contacted Interstate Waste Company, which stopped its truck mid-route and diverted it to a trash transfer facility where its contents were dumped out on the floor in an attempt to find the tefillin. It took a team of six volunteers two hours to work their way through the massive trash pile, ultimately finding the tefillin and restoring them to their rightful owner.
Ramapo Shines in Coat Collection Contest While the Town of Ramapo often finds itself the subject of unwanted media attention, it took center stage when each of the county’s five towns competed to donate the most winter coats to the needy. Ramapo, Rockland’s largest town, easily won the contest, with 659 adults’ and children’s coats donated, reported The Journal News. A total of 1,962 coats were donated and cleaned for free before being distributed to the Martin Luther King Multipurpose Center, People to People and Advocating for Change. Speaking to reporters, People to People’s executive director Diane Serratore thanked county residents for their donations, pointing to her own heart as she said, “Now when it’s cold out, there it doesn’t have to be cold in here.”

Recap: Elisheva and her family are in shock about the huge, brand-new apartment they’ve won. Blumi returns to England. Still very upset about the yad, she wonders about the anonymous bachur. Binyamin is gripped with anxiety over the misplaced envelope. He has lost his desire to earn money, and realizes that the whole “job” was never really a good thing for him. “You look very cheerful today, Reb Yisroel! What happened? Did your granddaughter visit with her baby again?” Elisheva’s father smiled and shook his head. No. “So, what is it?” Reb Zundel Kravin hung his cane on the back of his chair and sat down at the table. “They’ve given us these heavy pitchers again. I’m telling you, it’s like a hotel here, but if I can’t serve myself and lift this heavy glass pitcher, why do I need all this elegance?” “I’ll pour for you, Reb Zundel.” Emmanuel suddenly appeared behind them. “Juice or seltzer?” “Seltzer with just a bit of juice. Thank you, Emmanuel.” The employee filled the cup while Reb Zundel turned to his tablemate again. “Nu, Reb Yisroel,” he prodded fondly. “Won’t you tell me what is making you so happy? Did you finish a masechta?” “He’s about to finish one,” Emmanuel said as he set down the cup. “Right, Mr. Yisroel? He has only three daf to go.” “Four,” Elisheva’s father corrected him, and tasted a bit of mashed potatoes with the edge of his fork. “Oh, baruch Hashem, baruch Hashem,
you are so fortunate to be doing that! May you merit to begin and finish many more masechtos!” the elderly man wished his friend warmly. “So is that why you’ve been smiling since the minute you came into the dining room?” “Maybe because of that, too,” Emmanuel replied, instead of the person being asked. “But he has another reason for his happiness. May I tell him, Mr. Yisroel?” Elisheva’s father made a noncommittal motion with his head, and Emmanuel decided that it was a sign of acquiescence. “His daughter just won a big, new apartment for her family.” He pulled over a chair, sat down next to the two older men, and proceeded to fill a plate for himself. “And it’s all thanks to her devoted father. Yes, yes, the man sitting here; he’s the one who bought the raffle tickets for his daughter. It’s a huge apartment, and she already told him on the phone yesterday that they are going to make a comfortable, quiet little suite for him there, so that he can come and live with them!” “Really! How could you not tell us such a thing, Reb Yisroel?” Reb Zundel

But on second thought, I don’t know which of my children I would have given it to. They would have just fought over it. So it’s good that I didn’t see it, just like it’s good that they won’t have anything to fight about when I leave this world.” He guffawed. “Actually, maybe my shirts; I have a few good ones.”

Emmanuel turned back to Reb Yisroel. “So, when are they moving in there?” he asked. “It depends,” Reb Yisroel said. “What does it depend on? When they get the place?” “Yes.” “And when will they make you your suite? Before they move in or afterward?” Reb Yisroel shook his head, indicating that he did not know. Emmanuel pulled one of the little dogs out of his pocket and put it on a nearby chair along with a piece of bread. The puppy gobbled it down in a few bites and raised its head expectantly for more. “You won’t have such a cutie in the new house, Reb Yisroel,” Emmanuel said. “You’ll miss my pets, won’t you?” “If he misses something, it will be you, Emmanuel,” Reb Zundel chided. “Not the dogs. He’ll have other sweet things there — his grandchildren, greatgrandchildren.” “He has just one great-grandson,” Emmanuel corrected him, eager to show off his knowledge. “Hey, there’s a catalog right there.” He jumped up to get it. “Didn’t you see these catalogs all over the place, Rabbi Kravin? This organization does a ton of advertising.” Reb Zundel didn’t even deign the glossy pages a look. “At my age, these raffles don’t interest me anymore,” he said. “But it’s a different story with Reb

Yisroel. He’s still young — at least three years younger than me.” Emmanuel leafed through the booklet. “Here, do you want to see what a gorgeous apartment your friend is soon going to be living in? Look at these pictures! Look at the view from the porch! Look at the china closet and the kitchen!” “It’s not a real picture,” Rabbi Kravin scoffed. “Where’s the apartment? Here in Bnei Brak? Don’t you see that the picture of the porch has the views of the Jerusalem Hills?” “Well, of course the pictures are not exactly like the real thing,” Emmanuel said. “The real apartment probably doesn’t have this exact table on the porch, along with the umbrella and bowl of fruit, and if it has a china closet, I’m sure it won’t come filled with all these silver items.” “My granddaughter is studying to do that,” Rabbi Kravin said. “She once showed me how she makes gorgeous pictures, even when there’s really nothing there.” “Nothing there?” Elisheva’s father, whose participation in the conversation had been minimal up until now, suddenly recoiled. “What, it’s all a lie?!” “Of course not; it’s absolutely true that your daughter won a magnificent apartment,” Emmanuel soothed him. “What Reb Zundel means to say is that, as of now, the apartment has just walls and a nice floor, without all the beautiful things inside.” “And without the view from the porch.” Some of the elderly people around them suddenly noticed that the catalog was the center of attention. They asked what was going on, Emmanuel explained, and the booklet was passed around from hand to hand. Everyone wanted to congratulate Reb Yisroel on his win, but he had already bentched and gone back to his room.
Eliyahu and Elisheva were waiting for him there, along with the cake that Elisheva always brought for her father. “We are going to see the apartment now, Tatty,” she told him. “I want you to come with us, okay?” Her father rejected the idea. “I’ll come when it’s ready,” he said hoarsely. And after a moment, he added, “Maybe.” ***** Of all their children, Eliyahu and Elisheva chose to take just Miri with them to see the new apartment. Elisheva didn’t know if Miri realized that it was an effort to compensate
porch provided more than enough light during this mid-afternoon hour. “This house is not for us, Eliyahu,” Elisheva said, after walking around for a few more minutes. She sat down on a folding chair she’d found in one of the bedrooms. “Not for us?” Eliyahu, who was checking the hinges on a door, turned to her. “Why not?” “It’s not… us, such a fancy place.” He looked around, as though seeing the house for the first time. “Fancy? What’s so fancy about it?” She smiled. “The tiles. The paint job. The kitchen cabinetry. All the lighting in the bedrooms.” “Oh, yes, there are lots of cabinets in the kitchen. I didn’t look at them too closely. But it’s good to have a lot of kitchen cabinets, right? That’s what you said when we came to see Tzippy’s apartment.” “Yes, it really is a wonderful thing.” At this point, she almost laughed. “But as beautiful as Tzippy’s kitchen is, this one is almost twice the size, and much more luxurious.” She stood up and went back to the kitchen. Eliyahu followed. “Look at these drawers… the countertops… the glass doors with those etched designs… the recessed lighting… the moldings…” “You don’t like these things? I thought you’d be happy. You never had any of these extras before.” “I do like them,” she admitted. “A bit.” Now she really began to laugh at her husband’s completely practical approach. “But on the other hand, it’s not my style. The children won’t understand…” She trailed off, not sure if he understood her. “I think what’s most important is what we think about this whole thing,” he said, running a finger over the granite countertop. “We didn’t choose to buy or renovate an apartment; we didn’t plan to invest any energy, money, time or patience in it. And we didn’t — the whole

her, so to speak, for the late stage at which they’d told her about the millionaire bankrolling Tzippy’s wedding. Miri didn’t say a thing. She was pleased with the offer, and happily joined her parents. They walked around the apartment, examining it in silence. Elisheva stood in the middle of the large dining room, gazing at the huge floor tiles that were covered with a thin layer of construction dust. Obviously, the building had been completed only very recently. “Did you see the kitchen, Mommy?” Miri called out. “Yes.” It was also huge. And she’d noticed that the small light bulbs glittering in the ceiling were the only lights on in the whole house. Even the lights in the large crystal chandelier, which spilled down from the dining room ceiling, were off. But the sun that beamed through the glass doors that separated the dining room from the

thing was given to us, as is! This grandeur won’t become the center of our lives. We got this place, so we thank Hashem for giving us some more space for our family. That’s it! What’s so complicated?” Miri was nowhere to be seen. She must have gone out to the large balcony. Elisheva looked around but didn’t answer her husband’s question. What’s so complicated? Her thought process was so not cerebral; it was nothing like her husband’s logical and straight way of thinking. “Look at that huge space for a fridge,” she finally said. “This is all for one fridge?” “Yes, like Tzippy’s.” “But we’re not going to buy a fridge like hers,” he said dismissively. “As far as I know, we didn’t get a grant to buy new appliances, only a lot of space in which to put the old ones.” “I know…” She took a deep breath. “When I say that this house is not for us, I mean that Tzippy’s mother-in-law bought that fridge for her, not me, and she fit it to the size of the space in Tzippy’s kitchen. But what will we do here? We’ll put our old fridge in this huge space? It will look like a wilting flower that some kids stick into a pile of dirt! “And in the dining room, we’ll put our table with our hodgepodge of chairs, and in the girls’ room, we’ll put their cheap, plastic chest of drawers…” She played with the wide, nickel handle of the cabinet on which she was leaning. “You’re forgetting that we’re supposed to be getting furniture for the rooms. But still, what difference does it make?” He rubbed his palm on the edge of the counter. “What bothered you all the years was the tiny space, not the plastic chest of drawers or our collection of chairs in the dining room.” “That’s what I thought,” she whispered. “Now I see that I’m so happy with this house, and not only because of its size. Deep inside, I love the beauty, and I adore this kitchen, and everything else the house comes with… and I feel strange about that. More than strange. I feel… bad.” “I’m happy that you are happy,” Eliyahu said simply. “I think every woman wants a nice house. The question is to what extent the house serves her, or whether she serves it. We won’t buy a big fridge, for example, but what about a freezer, which we never bought because we never had room for it?” And no money for, Elisheva thought to herself. “Now we can buy one and put it next to the refrigerator. This will be a perfect spot for them both.” “Right.” She smiled at her husband’s practical solution. “And this way, it won’t look to you like a flower stuck into a dusty mound, right?” Her smile widened. “Right. B’ezras Hashem, it won’t.” To be continued...

Senate Impeachment Trial Set to Begin THE PULSE: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi
announced that she would stop withholding the articles of impeachment from the Senate. She said that she intends to send both articles of impeachment against President Trump to the Senate as early as this week. Once the Senate receives the articles, the impeachment trial can get underway. THE IMPACT: Pelosi held back the articles of impeachment as a means of exerting pressure on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Pelosi had hoped to pressure McConnell into agreeing
86 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 15, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
to Democratic demands to call witnesses during the Senate impeachment trial. McConnell did not cave to Pelosi’s pressure and refused to accept her demand that the Senate agree to a framework to call witnesses before the trial begins. However, Pelosi was successful in drawing attention to the issue. Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine announced that she is working with a small group of like-minded Republican Senators who are attempting to find a way to call witnesses to testify at the upcoming trial. McConnell himself did not rule out the possibility of agreeing to call witnesses once the trial begins. Former National Security Adviser John Bolton is one witness whom Democrats would like to hear from, and he has recently indicated that he would be willing to testify should the Senate subpoena him.
Iran Controversy Heats Up THE PULSE: Top administration officials briefed Congress on the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. They made the case that Soleimani posed an imminent threat to U.S. interests. President Trump claimed that Soleimani was planning to attack four U.S. embassies. However, many members of Congress were not convinced. Republican Senator Mike Lee called it the “worst briefing” he has ever received on a military issue. Libertarian Republican Senator Rand Paul continued to be critical of the president’s decision. Both have indicated that they would support a War Powers Resolution being introduced in the Senate to limit the president’s ability to take military action against Iran without first consulting with Congress. Staunch Trump ally and supporter Congressman Matt Goetz (R-FL) also announced that he would support the House version of the resolution. In an interview with Face the Nation, Secretary of Defense Mark Esper admitted that he had “not seen” any specific evidence that Soleimani had planned to attack four embassies as President Trump had claimed. THE IMPACT: Trump’s decision appears to have paid
handsome dividends. The strike successfully removed a foe of the United States who was personally responsible for the deaths of many American citizens. The attack served to enhance America’s deterrent capability. It showed that America would not sit idly by while Iran continues to push the envelope with its attacks on American infrastructure in the region. The relatively meek response of Iran to the killing of Soleimani appears to show that the fear that a strong reaction to Iran would trigger regional destabilization was overblown. The mistaken downing of a Ukrainian Airliner by the Iranian air defenses further served to increase the pressure on the Iranian regime. Multiple protests in Tehran against the government and Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appeared to vindicate the aggressive policy of the Trump administration. President Trump sent a message in Farsi to the people of Iran that American stands with them and against their government. However, Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah terror group, vowed to take action against America for Soleimani’s death and said that the Iranian missile attacks against the U.S. base was only the beginning, and not the end, of the Iranian response. However, many members of Congress are still livid that the president did not consult them before carrying out the attack. The constitution grants Congress the power to declare war, and the War Powers Resolution of 1973 limits the president’s ability to use military force without Congressional authorization. Past presidents, such as Bill Clinton, have also been accused of violating the War Powers Act. However, under Article II of the constitution, a president has the right to exercise mili-
tary power to defend American citizens. This is why the Trump administration’s justifications for the attack are so important. It is also why the shifting explanations with regard to the type of threat Soleimani posed from different members of the administration are proving problematic. In a recent ABC/Ipsos poll, 56% of Americans opposed the administration’s actions regarding Iran.
Marianne Willamson Withdraws From Race THE PULSE: Self-help author Marianne Willamson an-
nounced that she is withdrawing her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. THE IMPACT: Williamson is a granddaughter of Jew-
ish-Russian immigrants and is the author of four bestselling books. Her candidacy has always been a long shot, and she did not qualify for the last three Democratic debates. However, she scored some notable moments in her early debate performances, when she drew attention to the Flint water crisis and the outsized influence of corporate political donations.
Cory Booker Suspends Campaign THE PULSE: New Jersey Senator and former Newark
Mayor Cory Booker announced that he was suspending his campaign and would no longer be seeking the Democratic presidential nomination. Booker did not qualify for the upcoming Democratic debate, and even though he fielded an extensive ground operation in Iowa, he failed to poll among the top-tier candidates in that pivotal early-voting state. Ultimately, Booker’s campaign was unable to raise the necessary funds to sustain his campaign, and his message failed to resonate with voters. On the day he withdrew, he was polling at 2% nationally. THE IMPACT: Booker’s withdrawal from the presidential race allows him to concentrate on his campaign for reelection to the Senate in 2020. Booker has a political career ahead of him, and that is likely part of the reason why he decided to call it quits on a presidential campaign that he realized was out of his reach. Booker is a leading voice on criminal justice reform, and he was instrumental in getting the First Step Act criminal justice reform bill passed in the Senate. Booker is also a leading proponent of gun control legislation. Booker retains his status as a force to be reckoned with within the Democratic party, and some are touting him as a possible vice presidential contender.

ANCIENT GRAINS M O D E R N I Z E D
Recipes and photography by: Miriam Pessy Wercberger
Centuries before the invention of Motrin and antibiotics, the Rambam, a brilliant physician, taught us to eat in a way that nurtures our bodies, minds and souls. In the following recipes, the spotlight is on ancient grains, which offer more nutrients than the refined grains available today. These superfoods have made a comeback recently as people are experimenting with foods that taste great while nurturing and protecting.

Cordova, Spain, 1148 Jewish life in Cordova was brought to a halt when it was overrun by the Almohades, an extreme and aggressive Muslim sect. Until that point, Cordova was a bastion of Torah and Yiddishkeit where Jews enjoyed a serene existence, steeped in learning and a connection with Hakadosh Baruch Hu. The Almohades heralded their unsolicited arrival with a brutal decree for the Yidden: Convert or be killed. A great number of the community was ruthlessly murdered. Some, however, were unable to withstand the pressure and converted. Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, later known as the holy Rambam, was but thirteen years old at the time. His family was of the few locals who managed to escape. Gone were the peaceful days of his youth. Gone was the opportunity for calm, undisturbed learning with his father, Rabbi Maimon, the dayan of Cordova On the streets of old Cordova, Spain

and a talmid of the Ri Migash. Gone was the extensive seforim library of Rabbi Maimon, burned by the Almohades. In its place, a new life began. For the next eleven years, the Maimon family was on the go, running from one point of refuge to another in their quest for a peaceful place to reside. They wandered through Spain and Northern Africa, eventually settling in Fez, Morocco. Here, too, the Almohades spread their sphere of influence. Many Yidden converted to Islam outwardly, keeping the Torah in secret. The Rambam publicized his Iggeres Hashmad, which discussed the issue of apostasy in depth. Before long, his condemnation of such conversions pitted him as a primary target of the ruling Muslims. Thus it was, that about five years
after settling in Fez, the Rambam returned to the escape routes, this time setting out for Eretz Yisroel. After a short while, for unknown reasons, the family sojourned yet again, this time settling in Fostat, Cairo. Remarkably, it was against this backdrop of persecution and instability that the Rambam established his repute as a leading Torah authority. He began writing his first great work, a commentary on the Mishnah, in his mid-twenties. The manuscript came along with him on his travels and was finally completed once in Fostat.
Fostat, Cairo, 1171 A few months after the family settled in Fostat, tragedy struck
Overview Reb Moshe ben Maimon was born in Cordova, Spain, on Erev Pesach 4895/1135 CE. He was orphaned from his mother at a young age. His father, Rabbi Maimon, was a direct descendant of Dovid Hamelech. When the Rambam was thirteen years old, savage Muslim rule in their hometown led the family to flee. They wandered for more than a decade, stopping in Fez, Morocco, and Eretz Yisroel before eventually settling in Cairo. A halachic authority, the Rambam authored many seforim, including Peirush Hamishnayos, Mishneh Torah and Moreh Nevuchim. The Rambam also demonstrated medical brilliance, promulgating discoveries in health and healing, and serving as royal physician. He was niftar on 20 Teves, 1204, and was laid to rest in Tiveria. Chief in prominence in gedolei Sefard, the Rambam illuminated the entire Torah world for all generations with his rich legacy.

with the passing of Rabbi Maimon, the Rambam’s revered father and teacher. The Rambam’s younger brother Dovid undertook to support the entire family, entering the field of diamond trade. It was a quintessential Yissachar-Zevulun partnership; Dovid handled the business affairs, and the Rambam learned without financial concern. Soon this arrangement, too, fell upon misfortune. On a business trip to India, Dovid’s ship sank at sea. Most of the family’s wealth, converted into a collection of precious gems to be traded, went down in the Indian Ocean along with Dovid. The Rambam was deeply affected by the loss of his brother. Aside for his personal bereavement, this turn of events forced Reb Moshe to take over the family’s finances. No longer could he remain enclosed within the four cubits of halacha without a care. Turning to the education of his youth, which included mathematics, medicine and philosophy, he began to practice medicine. His fame as a doctor of note spread quickly. The Grand Vizier Alfadhil appointed him as personal physician. Soon the Rambam was hired by Sultan Saladin. The Rambam’s rise to prominence was not taken lightly in the royal court. The former Muslim physician of the Sultan as well as other court ministers constantly sought ways to diminish his influence and even eliminate him altogether. Brilliantly, and with much siyata d’Shmaya, the Rambam outwitted their every attempt.

The Rambam’s grave after undergoing reconstruction in Teveria, Israel.
The Rambam’s days were packed full; he held three positions at the same time! The Rambam once wrote about it in a letter, commenting that he barely had time left to learn. The strain of his daily schedule was incredible. After a long day in the Sultan’s court, the Rambam would arrive home only to find it crowded with patients seeking his medical counsel. The burden of the community’s affairs fell on his shoulders, too, as the official “Naggid” of the city. Similar to the Reish Galusa in Bavel, the Naggid was responsible to collect all Jewish taxes and represent the Jew-
ish community in the royal government. And, of course, this was all in addition to his religious responsibilities as rav. Despite all this, the Rambam authored many seforim. Looking at the veritable library attributed to his name, one can wonder how he had the time and ability to compile, research and write so many major works in his lifetime. And yet, the
writings of the Rambam merely took up a sliver of his schedule!
Prolific Author The Rambam’s novel approach in writing his seforim was unprecedented and never replicated. He sought to explain the Torah in a manner so that every Yid could achieve true clarity, and he used drastic new measures to organize the material. To this end, he usually wrote in Arabic, the prevailing language in his region, but his works were soon translated into

Yerushalmi. In line with his systematic way of thinking, the Rambam arranged it by topic rather than by following the order used in Shas. In response to the study of Greek and Arabic philosophy that was unfortunately gaining popularity among Yidden at the time, the Rambam authored his next work, the Moreh Nevuchim. It was written with a philosophical slant, aimed at shedding light to those already exposed to foreign thought. Still, Moreh Nevuchim was criticized for opening the eyes of sheltered Yidden who may never have had questions in the first place. Lashon Kodesh. His first major work was the Perush Hamishnayos, an extensive commentary on the Shisha Sidrei Mishnah. Included in it are his famous Shemoneh Perakim, which includes an introduction to Pirkei Avos, and the thirteen ikrei emunah. The Rambam stated that every Yid must believe in all these principles, for it is kefirah not to. These passages of Ani
Maamin, found in our siddur today, are a somewhat revised version of the original verses. The principles are also written poetically in the tefillah of Yigdal, at the beginning of Shacharis. The Rambam’s next monumental opus was the Mishneh Torah, also known as the Yad Hachazakah. In it, the Rambam compiled halachos and minhagim from Talmud Bavli and
Proficient Physician Shortly after he began to practice medicine, the Rambam became known for the devoted and compassionate way in which he treated patients — on top of his advanced skills and knowledge. He paid close attention to anyone who needed his care, Yid or gentile, rich or poor.
The Gates in Fez In Fez, the Rambam’s fame as a scholar who excelled in Torah and academia spread among Yidden and Muslims alike. Before long, his strong stance on the issue of forced conversion earned him the Muslims’ contempt, and he was personally persecuted as a threat to Islam. One day, he was chased by a gang of Muslims. As he approached the city gates, the mob nearly overtook him, and the Rambam called out Hashem’s name. A lion suddenly appeared at the gate, and many of the gang retreated. But then they resumed their chase, and as they neared the second gate, the Rambam cried out the Shem Hashem again. This time his pursuers found themselves chained to the ground. At the third gate, a pillar of fire separated the Rambam from the Muslim gang. These gates are called the Lion’s Gate, the Gate of Chains and the Gate of Fire until this very day.

As the sultan’s personal doctor, the Rambam’s fame spread even farther. From as distant as England, he was contacted by King Richard the Lionhearted who wanted him as his personal physician, too. The Rambam ultimately turned down the offer, preferring to remain in Egypt where he used his status to help his brethren under Islamic rule. The Rambam bequeathed us with more than fifteen treatises on the theory and practice of medicine. He made some discoveries way back then regarding medical issues we face today, such as asthma, hepatitis and hemorrhoids. His description of the basic symptoms of pneumonia — acute fever, pain in the side, short, rapid breaths and serrated pulse and cough — are still referenced to by doctors even today! The Rambam also described diabetes, positing that it was less common in cold Europe and more prevalent in warm Africa. In his seforim, the Rambam mentions medicine and guidance for leading a healthful life. Physical well-being and caring for our bodies, he notes, are part of our spiritual obligation. The Rambam didn’t believe in merely treating symptoms of disease. With a “whole body” approach, he first examined the patient’s eating habits, fitness levels, and emotional and psychological well-being. Both in times of health and illness, he advocated the mind-body balance.
Twilight Reb Moshe ben Maimon passed away shortly before the age of seventy. His wish to be buried in Eretz Yisroel was fulfilled, and he was laid to rest in Tiveria. The site of his kever, frequented by many, was recently renovated, and placards of the passage, “M’Moshe ad Moshe lo kam k’Moshe — From the time of Moshe Rabbeinu until Moshe ben Maimon, there was no one like Moshe,” still stand.

I WANT TO GO HOME! The following article has been written under Rabbinical guidance:
ikki (Hanna), an 11 year old girl and an only child, thrived under her parents diligent care in their home all her life. Numerous individuals, with the aid of a local Agency, schemed against Rikki’s parents to have her forcefully removed from their home and to have her placed as a foster child in one of the collaborator’s homes. The collaborator’s scheme succeeded by involving Social Services (ACS) in their malicious agenda. Through false accusations, they had Rikki torn from her parents on October 15, 2018. The foster parents claimed to be protecting Rikki with an eventual plan to reunite her with her parents. At the same time, they were secretly filing to permanently adopt her.
Please daven for Rikki:
to have a The foster parents, in conjunction with the Agency, deliberately disobey doctors orders and do not provide Rikki with her proper dietary, educational (IEP/ IESP) and medical needs. Rikki’s wellbeing has therefore deteriorated drastically to the point that her life is in danger. In addition, the Agency does not allow Rikki to recite brachos and the foster
parents force her to be mechallel Shabbos. Rikki is extremely distraught in her forced foster home and cries to be brought back home to her parents. She incessantly screams at the foster parents: “You’re not my Mommy and Daddy!” “I want to go home!” The foster parents and Agency constantly threaten Rikki from sharing her feelings with her parents of the painful truth of her situation in the foster home. In the meantime, on April 4, 2019, the Agency succeeded in convincing the court to completely sever the biological mother from any contact with Rikki, while attempting to execute a similar scheme against the biological father, with the direct intention of quickly facilitating adoption. With Hashem’s help, together with much help from the community by means of public funding and influence, the adoption that was scheduled for August 15, 2019 was postponed for two months. On October 17, 2019 the scheduled adoption was again deferred, and the mother’s visitation rights which had been suspended for over six months were finally restored. From the day the biological parents entered court on April 14, 2016 to the present day, all claims against the parents made by ACS, the Agency, the foster parents, and their cohorts have been disproven with irrefutable evidence. Despite all this, Rikki is still not being returned to her parents due to “concerns.” No explanations are being provided as to what the “concerns” are, and the Agency together with ACS are utilizing all their tactics and resources to achieve permanent adoption in court on January 14, 2020.

The parents have summoned the opposing parties to Bais Din but the parties refused to come. The Rabbonim have therefore stated that this issue must be dealt with in a legal manner. There is a case specific legal process available that is guaranteed to bring Rikki home quickly, but the legal fees to proceed with it are $180,000. The Rabbonim have stated that “According to the Torah, this is a true mitzvah of pidyon shvuyim and hatzolas nefashos and the child must be returned at all costs.” Hashem is on Rikki’s side, as He always has been (see Koheles 3:15) and will ultimately make her and her parents succeed, but as human beings, we must do our part. Please help these parents with as much as you can to bring Rikki home safely. May this campaign only reunite Klal Yisrael, stop the sinas chinom and motivate all those who harmed Rikki to do immediate teshuva, and thereby allow for the geula sheleima to come!

Everyone knows the name of the Rambam — but do we really understand his impact? Many influential people have walked this planet, leaving a mark that’s felt even long after they’ve passed on, but few have single-handedly accomplished as much as Rabbeinu Moshe ben Maimon, the heiliger Rambam. With medical knowledge that catapulted him to a position of great prestige and led to the authorship of several volumes on various health topics, the Rambam earned his place in the annals of history as a physician par excellence. For this, his name has been plastered across buildings, institutions and journals and is held in high esteem even by those who have little to do with Torahtrue living. But even more profound than all of this is the impact the Rambam had on Yiddishkeit. It’s not for naught that his tombstone bears the words, “From Moshe to Moshe there arose none like Moshe.” Aside from his incredible intelligence and analytical thinking, the Rambam was known as a gentle soul, unable to turn away those who sought his help. In a letter to his friend, Rabbi Shmuel ibn Tibbon, the Rambam discouraged him from undertaking an arduous and dangerous sea journey, explaining that it would be impossible for them to meet for more than a few minutes. He described his overtaxed schedule, which in-

volved waking early and traveling every day (aside from Shabbos) to the Sultan’s palace to care for those who required his medical services. This alone was nearly a full day’s work, but then there was still a return journey and many more hours of attending patients in his own home. In the Rambam’s own words: When I come home, my foyer is always full of people — Jews and non-Jews, important people and not, judges and policemen, people who love me and people who hate me, a mixture of people, all of whom have been waiting for me to come home. I get off my donkey, wash my hands, and go into the hall to see them. I apologize and ask that they should be kind enough to give me a few minutes to eat. This is the only meal I eat in twenty-four hours. Then I go out to heal them, write them prescriptions and instructions for treating their problems… I talk to and prescribe for them even while lying down on my
The Daily Rambam In 1984, the Lubavitcher Rebbe established a daily learning schedule for the Mishneh Torah. Thousands of people each day learn the Rambam on either the three-chapter or one-chapter-a-day schedule.

Also Known By The Mishneh Torah is also referred to as the Yad Hachazakah, which alludes to the fourteen sections of the work. “Yad” has a gematria of fourteen. The Mishneh Torah, being the Rambam’s greatest work, is often simply called by his name, as in, “Did you learn the Rambam today?”
back from exhaustion. And when night begins, I am so weak, I cannot even speak anymore...
And yet, despite the pressure of work responsibilities few can imagine, the Rambam was one of the most prolific contributors to the world of Torah learning. Neither the burden on his body nor the one on his soul stopped him from accomplishing what few can even fathom. The Rambam was intimate with suffering, having been orphaned of his mother at a young age and exiled from his homeland. It was during this especially difficult time, while fleeing the Muslim sword, that the Rambam wrote his first great work, a commentary on Mishnay-
os known as the Sefer Hamaor. “I was working on this commentary under the most arduous conditions,” he wrote, “as we were driven from place to place... while traveling by land or crossing the stormy sea.” An average man may have given up the goal of scholarship due to the circumstances — but the Rambam was no average man.
Lifesaving Letters The Rambam’s piety, intellect and warmth toward other Yidden caused him to become a pillar of Medieval-era Yiddishkeit, his name known far and wide. At only 42 years of age, the Rambam was appointed Chief Rabbi of Cairo, and

Of Philosophy and Fire Despite the esteem in which he was held by world Jewry, two of the Rambam’s major contributions to Yiddishkeit became the focus of much controversy: the Moreh Nevuchim (Guide to the Perplexed), which deals with philosophical aspects of Yiddishkeit, and the Mishneh Torah, which aside from being a complex body of law, also contains philosophical concepts in Sefer Hamada, its first section. These philosophical sections were received in vastly disparate manners by Yidden in the French provinces after the Rambam’s passing. The Jews of Southern France were, by and large, blessed with security not seen farther north. This was a prosperous region where the Yidden were given liberties such as land ownership and importation rights, and in many ways, even admired by the non-Jewish community. For a significant portion of this segment of French Jewry, the philosophy of Yiddishkeit was a treasure; finally they would know what to answer the non-believer should they be lured into philosophical discussion! Up north, however, the Yiddishe community had little contact with the outside world, as they were looked upon with scorn and bitterly persecuted. Their lives centered around being

mekabel ol Malchus Shamayim in simple faith, far away from the eyes of those who hated them. For the rabbanim of the northern kehillos, philosophy was automatically associated with the free-thinking communities of Spain — communities that had lost large numbers of religious adherents to foreign concepts that had lured them away.
There were rabbanim in Southern France who shared the views of their northern brethren, believing the Moreh Nevuchim and Sefer Hamada to present significant spiritual dangers for those who were not sufficiently prepared to delve into the philosophical depths. This was a machlokes between the poskim, though many great rabbanim were in favor of the dissemination of these texts. The Ramban, who was born during the Rambam’s last years, also felt that some of the concepts within these seforim were not meant for the masses. To that end, he proposed that Sefer Hamada be learned, but not Moreh Nevuchim. The controversy over the seforim died down when the Dominicans, a segment of the Catholic Church that went on to lead the Inquisition, burned these seforim — claiming they were blasphemous and a stumbling block that prevented the Yidden from converting to Catholicism. At that point, all of the Yidden realized that the Rambam’s honor had been terribly affronted. The controversy fizzled out, and over the years, the Rambam’s various seforim have been afforded a place of honor on Yiddishe bookshelves all around the world.

The Morrocon and Spanish Jews, too, benefited greatly from a letter that the Rambam wrote. Though the Maimon family had left Spain when the Almohades — a fanatical Muslim sect — conquered the region, many Yidden still remained in those lands and were forced to choose between exile, death or conversion to Islam. He’d been through enough pain to deeply relate people in difficult situations. For the Rambam, gentleness and caring was the responsibility of every Yid.
that even their mitzvos were held against them as sin. The Rambam, departing from his usual manner of gentle encouragement, wrote a scathing letter in response, rebuking the “long-winded foolish babbling and nonsense.” Point by point, he refuted that person’s position, clarifying the halachos of conversion under duress for the suffering community, giving them hope and strength. And while the specific aspects of that supposed conversion only involved uttering a statement without involving violation of the mitzvos, the Rambam nevertheless ended the Iggeres Hashmad stating that one should choose exile and “...leave these places and go to where he can practice religion and fulfill the Law without compulsion or fear.” Likewise he wrote, “If he is compelled to violate even one precept, it is forbidden to stay there. He must leave everything he has, travel day and night until he reaches a spot where he can practice his religion; the world is sufficiently large and extensive.” Through the Rambam’s wise guidance and utmost clarity in halacha, not only were Yiddish lives saved, but Yiddishe neshamos, as well. And his reach continues to affect us today, largely in part due to his magnum opus, the Mishneh Torah.
The Mishneh Torah Walk into any seforim room and there, upon the perhaps potbellied shelves sagging under the weight of their holy tomes, you’ll surely find the Mishneh Torah, a staple in every Yiddishe home. No matter one’s nusach of prayer, style of dress or pronunciation of Lashon Kodesh, each and every Yid knows that the Mishneh Torah is a wonder in its own league. But what exactly is it
118 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 15, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
that sets this collection apart from anything that came before or after it? Aside from the fact that the Rambam, a young exile, began this world-changing compilation at a mere 25 years of age, the breadth of Torah covered in the Mishneh Torah is astounding. When he set out to write the Mishneh Torah, he had in mind to make the laws of the entire Torah accessible to every man. Though the Rif before him, the heiliger Rabbi Yitzchok Al-Fasi, had penned Sefer Ha’halachos — a groundbreaking compilation that extracted the laws a Yid must know from within the depths of the Gemara — the Rambam went a step further and codified the entire body of Torah law by topic, including those halachos that are not currently able to be fulfilled. The Rambam wrote in his introduction to the Mishneh Torah: ....A person will not need another text at all with regard to any Jewish law. Rather, this text will be a compilation of the entire Torah Shebaal Peh, including also the ordinances, customs and decrees that were enacted from the time of Moshe, our teacher, until the completion of the Gemara, as were explained by the Geonim in the texts they composed after the Gemara. Therefore, I have called this text Mishneh Torah; a
person should first study the Written Law, and then study this text and comprehend the entire Torah Shebaal Peh from it, without having to study any other text between the two.
There were those who feared that the Rambam was attempting to do away with the study of the Gemara, but that was not his intent at all. His goal with the Mishneh Torah was to provide a simpler format for the average man to understand and have within his grasp the full scope of Jewish law — but not at the expense of studying the Gemara. In fact, in the laws detailed in Talmud Torah (1:11), he writes that one-third of a man’s study time should be devoted to the Gemara. In the attempt to make the work more accessible for all Yidden, the Rambam wrote the Mishneh Torah in Lashon Kodesh instead of Arabic (which he used for all of his other works), or the traditional Aramaic. He also used brevity in language, and for that reason, failed to cite his sources. On this point, the Rambam wrote that he regretted the omissions and that should time allow him, he would go back and compile them. He was, unfortunately, niftar before being able to accomplish this. It is fascinating to note that the last two chapters of the Mishneh Torah, in the sefer entitled Malachim u’Milchamos (Kings and Their Wars), deal with a set of halachos that our nation has never yet been able to fulfill, but pray to fulfill every day: the laws related to the era of Moshiach. There he writes of the tasks that Moshiach is required to accomplish in order to actually be crowned Moshiach, and he describes what Moshiach’s times will be like. He also reminds us what it is about Moshiach that we truly look forward to. In the Rambam’s own words: The chachamim and nevi’im did not yearn for the coming of Moshiach in order to have dominion over the entire world, to rule over the gentiles, to be exalted by the nations, or to eat, drink and celebrate. Rather, they desired to be free to involve themselves in Torah and wisdom without any pressures or disturbances, so that they would merit the World to Come, as explained in Hilchos Teshuvah. In that era, there will be neither famine or war, envy or competition, for good will flow in abundance, and all the delights will be freely available as dust. The occupation of the entire world will be solely to know Hashem. –Hilchos Malachim U’Milchamos, 12:3–4
The coming of Moshiach is about shleimus haTorah, about fulfilling Hakadosh Baruch Hu’s will in entirety and living our lives in exquisite closeness with Him. Though we may not, at this very moment, be able to keep all of the laws and ordinances decreed upon us, by learning this sefer that the Rambam has gifted us with, we will be better prepared for that day when it comes, bimheirah v’yameinu.

The Rambam is famous for his incredible contributions to the Torah world, but during his lifetime, he sought not to financially profit from his vast Torah knowledge. To that end, he also worked as a physician. A man of tremendous knowledge and wisdom, the Rambam was enormously successful as a doctor, and many people are familiar with his preventive health guidelines. Much of this guidance can be found in Mishneh Torah, Sefer Hamada, De’os, chapter four. These guidelines cover everything from nutrition to sleep to bathing to exercise, and most intriguingly, come with an alluring promise: a long life. Before setting out to detail his guidelines, the Rambam placed them in the proper perspective, stating: “Maintaining a healthy and sound body is among the ways of Hashem — for one cannot understand or have any knowledge of the Creator, if he is ill.” The following is a brief summary of the Rambam’s guidelines for health as related to diet, exercise and sleep. (There are other guidelines that can be found in De’os, chapter four, which are not included here.) Before reading the advice, keep in mind the words of Rabbi Leib Kelemen, who points out that this information was stateof-the-art over 800 years ago, but if a pointer contradicts modern medicine, one should heed the advice of modern doctors whose knowledge is drawn from more recent research based on current conditions. Always seek the guidance of your doctor before making any changes to your diet or lifestyle.

The Rambam’s Guidelines Walk to raise your body temperature before you eat. Alternatively, exert yourself in some other way to the point of sweating each morning, rest a little to regain your composure, and then eat. Bathing in hot water after this exercise is also beneficial. Afterward, wait a short while and then eat. Always eat while seated, or while reclining on your left side. Never eat unless hungry, and never drink unless thirsty. Never eat until your stomach is full; stop at three-quarters of full satisfaction. After eating, do not exert yourself until the food has been digested. Never put off relieving yourself, even for an instant. Sleep for eight hours each night, and time your sleep so that you awaken just before sunrise. Sleep on your right side at the beginning of your sleep, and on your left side for the final portion of sleep. Wait three or four hours between eating and sleeping. Do not nap during the day. Eat poultry before meat, and eggs before poultry. In general, eat lighter foods before heavier foods. Foods that have a laxative effect, such as grapes, figs, mulberries, pears, melons, certain types of cucumbers, and
certain types of squash, should only be eaten before the main meal. Foods that have a constipating effect, such as pomegranates, quinces, apples and certain pears, should be eaten immediately after the main meal, and not in large amounts. In the summer, eat foods without many spices, and include vinegar. In the rainy season/winter, eat seasoned foods, many spices and include mustard and sharp foods. The following foods are extremely harmful: large fish that are aged and salted, cheese that is aged and salted, truffles and mushrooms, meat that is aged and salted, wine from the press, cooked food that has been left over until it produces an odor, and any food with a bad smell or a very bitter taste. These are like poison to the body. Other foods that are harmful, though less harmful than those mentioned above, should only be eaten in small amounts and not often. These include large fish, cheese or milk that was left out more than 24 hours after milking, the meat of large oxen or he-goats, horse-beans, lentils, chickpeas, barley bread, matzos, cabbage, leeks, onions, garlic, mustard and radishes. Foods that are harmful, though less harmful than those listed above, include waterfowl, young pigeons, dates, bread roasted in oil or kneaded in oil, flour that has been sifted until no bran remains [white flour], fish brine and pickled fish oil. Do not eat these in large quantities. Figs, grapes and almonds are beneficial, whether fresh or dried. As long as one exercises, exerts himself greatly, does not eat to the point of satiation, and is able to relieve himself with ease, one will not suffer sickness and will grow in strength, even if he ingests harmful foods. Whoever is sedentary, does not relieve himself when he has the need, or is constipated, will be full of pain for all of his days, and his strength will fade away even if he eats the proper foods and follows the rules of medicine. Overeating is like poison to anyone's body. It is the main source of all illness. Most illnesses that afflict a person are caused by harmful foods or by filling one’s stomach and overeating — even healthful foods.
Interestingly, there are foods that the Rambam lists as harmful that many today consider to be healthful, such as chickpeas and dates. Chickpeas, and all beans, but especially red kidney beans, contain a toxin called phytohaemagglutinin. It is important that the cooking of all beans, including chickpeas, includes fifteen minutes of vigorous boiling to remove this toxin. Dates are an excellent source of potassium, but too much potassium can lead to hyperkalemia. Thus, while dates are considered very healthy today, one should not eat too many each day. Furthermore, modern science seems to confirm that restricting calories does indeed lead to a longer life in lab animals and has been shown to slow the ageing process in humans. Another concern regarding the Rambam’s guidelines for health is whether or not his promise of long life still holds true. Unfortunately, we are living in times when there is chemical contamination in everything, from the air we breathe, to the food we eat, to the water we drink, and this may have a negative effect on our health no matter how hard we work to maintain it. In modern times, we must try to avoid exposure to pollutants as much as possible. A study conducted at Michigan State University in East Lansing showed that living with HEPA air filters reduces blood pressure by an amount similar to the effects gained by exercise or reduced sodium diets. That said, we should certainly do what is within our power, and doing our best to maintain a healthy lifestyle can only help. Ultimately, the Rambam’s advice seems to be to use moderation in life: to eat, but not too much, and not the wrong foods (whatever those may be); to sleep a full eight hours each night, and not to nap; to exercise, etc. Maintaining our health is a vital component of our avodas Hashem, and there are many steps we can take to do so, from fixing our diets to improving our sleep schedules. May it be with hatzlacha!

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP THEIR CHILDREN AFTER RECENT TRAUMATIC EVENTS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD BY: GELLY ASOVSKI, LCSW-R, RPT-S Many parents and children are very overwhelmed, given the current climate of anti-Semitism. People are afraid that they could be the next target wherever they go around the neighborhood or visit the malls. This is a scary time for all of us. I’d like to share with you all some coping tools you can use to help your children calm down, sleep better and feel better after the recent disturbing incidents. This art technique is a part of EMDR RTEP (recent trauma events protocol) and EMDR GTEP (group trauma events protocol) crisis intervention protocol that was developed by Israeli EMDR trauma experts to help people after terror attacks. These coping tools will help you, the parent, as well. Please do these art therapy exercises together with your kids for optimal results. The first thing we want to learn about is what’s called a Safe Place Exercise. I want to help you and your children find a safe place that can help all of you access a sense of safety and stability when feeling unsettled. Some children and adults can’t access safety at any given moment. It’s too hard. (You can switch the name of this exercise to Calm Place to reduce triggers associated with feelings of a lack of safety.) Gather your children around the kitchen table. Get some pens, pencils, crayons, markers and blank papers. Talk to your kids abound the idea of remembering times and places that helped them feel safe and calm. Some children may need you to give them suggestions for this activity. Do not pressure your children to draw something that doesn’t resonate with them.
These are some suggestions of what children and adults think about when they imagine a safe place: 1. Being tucked into bed 2. Relaxing on the couch 3. Mommy lighting Shabbos candles 4. Reading a book 5. Parents being home at night 6. The family eating supper or a Shabbos meal together 7. Taking a warm bath 8. Eating Mommy’s yummy cake or a favorite meal
Some examples of happy places: 1. Family vacations 2. Visiting grandparents 3. Visiting cousins 4. Playing with siblings and babies 5. Day camp or sleepaway camp 6. Playing sports or other games 7. Playing with dolls 8. Playing with jewelry or creating hairstyles 9. Sitting around a campfire 10. Hiking
9. Going to shul with Tatty
10. Visiting Bubby’s house
Any suggestion a child chooses is okay if it works for them.
13. Getting a massage from Mommy
Some additional “calm place” ideas:
14. Looking at family albums
1. A mother’s kiss
15. Relaxing with neighbors
2. Cuddling with Mommy or Tatty
3. Visiting a favorite relative or friend
17. Lessons that a child takes or wants to take
4. Being at home, whether in the bedroom, playroom, kitchen or dining room 5. Taking a bubble bath 6. Wearing their favorite pajamas 7. Playing with their baby sister or brother 8. Listening to music or a story 9. Being at a rebbe’s tisch 10. Attending an Avos Ubanim or girls Sunday program In addition, you can also discuss happy places and draw things that make you and your kids happy.
18. Taking a trip to Eretz Yisroel This activity should be done when you are well rested and in a frame of mind to focus on your children’s needs. I hope this art therapy exercise helps your family regain some sense of stability. If you or your child is not able to take care of basic daily activities due to heightened levels of fear, please consider reaching out to a licensed mental health professional. The full EMDR RTEP and GTEP protocols help adults and children debrief after trauma and can be a huge help to anyone who is struggling in the aftermath of traumatic events.

Life at a Glance MENACHEM, age 24: works in sales LEAH, age 23: runs her own business sewing custom gowns and dresses ARON, age 3.5 MIRIAM, 18 months Both kids are in daycare. In the past year, Leah has had to cut down on work because Miriam has been sick a lot. Menachem’s job isn’t bringing in enough to cover, and their debts are catching up with them. Real numbers and real facts. Identifying details have been changed to protect privacy.
Recap: Finding themselves in serious debt, Menachem and Leah realize that it’s time to take charge of their finances.
We’ve scheduled an appointment with a financial coach — I finally talked Menachem into it. He’s still really upset about my not agreeing to the cash advance, but at least we agreed not to talk about it anymore. We’re very serious about this meeting; by now we’re both willing to do whatever it takes to turn our financial life around. I know we have our work cut out for us, but I feel like change is coming. Menachem, on the other hand, is still skeptical about this; he feels that as good as the coach is and whatever plan we come out with on paper after our session is over, we still have to go home to face an empty fridge, stacks of bills and a landlord we can’t pay. I’m not proud of the beginning of our meeting. It feels like we’re both telling on each other — nitty-gritty things like my picking on Menachem’s sesame chicken takeout (which he buys way too often! He never eats my food anymore) and his attacking my cleaning help. I kind of expected the coach to tell us what a deep mess we’re in and how horribly we botched up, but I’m pleasantly surprised when he gives us hope. He tells us, “Don’t blame each other; support each other. You are victims of the credit card company’s marketing tactics and of the American debt mentality.” He helps us realize we’re not the only crazy ones — that this is something many, many people go through. Yes, we made some not-smart decisions, but that doesn’t mean we’re not smart. He encourages us to stop being so hard on ourselves and on each other, and to support each other through this. He says, “You can — and will — make this work. The past is gone, so learn from your mistakes and focus on the future.” I’m excited to start doing just that.
These feelings are very common. Many people are reluctant to pay a financial coach to sit with them when they’re behind on rent and groceries. And the truth is, Menachem is right — we coaches don’t give out any magic potions that make the bills go away. But we do help you get your financial pegs in order, pinpoint what is going wrong, plan out your goals, and help you create a strategy to get there. You will leave with a clear plan of action and the hope and peace of mind that it brings. At the end of the day, what you end up paying your financial coach is peanuts next to the money you’ll earn and save with the insights you gain from him.

Menachem: We are hesitant to give up our credit cards right away, so the coach encourages us to lock them into a fireproof box. Borrowing money is a very big deal. I never realized that when I swipe my credit card in the shoe store, I’m technically taking out a loan… He tells us that once everything is paid off, we should have plastic surgery — where we cut up all of our cards and do a confetti party. The sound of it makes us smile. The coach helps us create an inventory of all the debts we have. There’s place on the sheet for assets, but we currently own nothing. Seeing it all in black and white is overwhelming; we owe more money than I wanted to let myself believe. $33,242.67! But there’s also relief in having it all written down in one place; my brain can let go a little, and it feels like the first step toward the future. I can do this!
Coach’s Take • Lock your cards up in a fireproof safe. Use only debit cards — no more credit. • Create an inventory of all the debts that you currently have. Knowing what you’re facing makes it easier to conquer.

• Discuss priorities, and move them to the top of the list. In this case, since rent is the most urgent, list that first, even though it’s not the smallest debt. • Minimum payments on the cards should be added to your monthly budget. • Every month your budget shows more income than expenses, use that money to tackle the debt. Start with the smallest debt first. Once that’s paid off, transfer the minimum payment you used to pay for that — plus any extra income — to the second smallest debt, and so on. • Paying it off in this order will help you lower the amount of lenders you owe and alleviate the stress of having so many collectors on your back. At the same time, you will get a psychological boost when you see how debt is actually getting paid off!

Eternalized Admiration for Eternal Accomplishments AS SIYUM HASHAS CELEBRATIONS CONTINUE AROUND THE WORLD, THERE ARE NO SIGNS OF SLACK AT JPLAK.
BY: Y. BLOOMING
ockland County, NY - It might have seemed like an ordinary winter Motzei Shabbos, but in reality it was an unforgettable moment for thousands of Torah learners who finished their 7.5-year Shas journey. While everyone was celebrating the Torah and its learners, one local business was being bombarded with order requests from around the world. JPlak, the company manufacturing oneof-a-kind acrylic plaques, has become the go-to destination for those who want to commemorate this occasion with more than a gift card or pretty watch. The popularity of JPlak has exploded in recent weeks after the company advertised its unique concept of creating a lasting memory of the monumental accomplishment of finishing Shas. The JPlak.com website visits and order requests have picked up significantly in recent days as the Siyum Hashas neared, and families, friends, and admirers found themselves still looking for the perfect purchase. The orders have been shipped all over the world with customers requesting international delivery of these trendy items.
completely sold out its expanded stock of one popular plaque, while other items are beginning to run low as well. While the ads and promotional material have had a significant impact, nothing has spoken more than the reaction of clients who received the physical plaques. Countless people have commented how much more magnificent and striking the items look in real life. Meanwhile at JPlak headquarters, the work continues at all hours, with management ensuring that every order is processed in a timely manner. “It appears that as soon as we wrap up this Siyum Hashas season, we will have to get to work on the 2027 Siyum,” quipped owner Mendy Braun. “I could not be more excited about the tremendous feedback we have received on our products,” he added.
A trend so big, it’s displayed in Town Square! JPlak has set up a pop-up shop in Town Square where you can see the actual products and order a custom plaque for your friend or loved one

WHAT IS A J·PLAK?
IS A J·PLAK A PLAQUE?
A one-of-a-kind fully custom acrylic masterpiece, hand-designed by renowned artists and designers. Each J·Plak marks a milestone and lasts for a lifetime.
Some are, but most are so much more. Because each one is custom-made, you can order a freestanding piece with a base, or one that frames a photograph or a clock.
CREATED IN MINUTES, TREASURED FOR A LIFETIME
4 EASY STEPS
To get your custom Siyum Hashas J-Plak! 1
Go to jplak.com and Select the plaque you like
Specify your plaque options
Enter the name of the Mesayim and the Signature names

Checkout, and... Done!
FAQ How long does it take to get my plaque? Manufacturing the plaque takes approximately four business days until it's ready for shipping. Multiple shipping options (including expedited) are available.
Writing a nusech is not my strong point. Are there any preset options? No worries! We have a list of pre-written nuschoas in English, Hebrew, and Yiddish for father, husband, son, magid shiur, and friend. You just have to select the nusach you like, add the name of the mesayem, and your personalized signature. After completing your order, the Jplak professional design team will review your plaque and make any necessary layout adjustments.
How many signature names can I add on my Plaque? As many as you’d like! Our designers will make sure the size and layout are perfect.
Do I have the option of getting a proof by email of my actual layout, before it gets made? Yes! If you’d like a proof, please add that in the comments when placing your order. (Proofs may result in a 1-day production delay.)
Do I need to wrap the Plaque in order to present it nicely? All Jplak plaques are beautifully packed in a JPlak gift box. Additional wrapping is unnecessary.
Are the plaques easy to hang? Every plaque comes with an easy-to-follow hanging instruction manual, and the hardware needed as well.
We already made a grand Siyum last week. Should I still purchase a plaque? 100%. The goal of the plaque is to eternalize admiration and to further encourage the mesayim. So even after the Siyum, it is the perfect way to eternalize their accomplishment.
I’m a gabbai of a Daf Yomi Shiur and I want to present a plaque to all shiur members in honor of the Siyum (and to encourage them for the next Siyum!). Do you have discounts for bigger orders? Sure. Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org

Morocco borders both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea; only two other countries, Spain and France, can claim the same! In clear weather, Moroccans standing at the narrowest point of the Strait of Gibraltar, where the ocean and sea meet, can look across the nine miles of water to see peninsular Spain. The beautiful country of Morocco is just a bit larger than California. Its diverse topography includes desert, forest and mountains, as well as vast expanses of coastal plains. Its famous Atlas mountain range collects rainwater and snow, effectively irrigating its valleys, all while the Sahara Desert to the southeast remains hot and dry. At the same time, its coastal areas remain nice and fertile, and that’s where most Moroccans live. Interestingly, even though only 18% of Moroccan land is farmable, nearly 45% of Moroccans are employed in agriculture. Popular Moroccan exports include many vegetables and fruits, and they’re especially known for their dates, which get transported worldwide. Morocco is also known for its export of paper pulp, cork, and many minerals, chemicals and metals, and they are also the world’s largest exporter of sardines.

Similar to the United Kingdom, the Moroccan government is a Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy. This means that the king of Morocco is head of state, while the prime minister is the head of the government. Since 1933, Moroccans have been celebrating Throne Day to mark the day their king ascended to the throne. With each new king’s ascension to the
throne, a new day earns this designation. Nowadays, Moroccans celebrate Throne Day on July 30. The United States of American owes Morocco a debt of gratitude for their being the first country to recognize the U.S. as an independent nation — even though the year was only 1777 and the War of Independence was not yet over. Fez, the second-largest city in Morocco (Casablanca ranks first), is lucky enough to have a hat named for itself. Oddly, however, the fez was worn by the Ottomans, who never reigned over Morocco. Instead, the fez got its name for the dye used to color the hat, which was sourced in Fez, Morocco.
North Africa’s indigenous Berbers mostly inhabit the mountain ranges, but their early presence in the country left its mark on the common language. While Morocco’s official languages are Arabic and Berber, people also speak Darija, which is a Moroccan Arabic that was heavily influenced by the Berber language. Moroccan architecture, cuisine and culture in general is a combination of the influences of the many countries bordering the land. Immigrants from European countries like Spain and France, as well as those who came from the Far East or from south of the Sahara Desert, all contributed to the country’s rich culture, which — along with its
picturesque landscape — is why Morocco is such a popular tourist destination. Tourists visiting Morocco should know that snake or monkey charmers performing on the street expect to get paid if their photograph is taken. No showing off for free! And giving directions? There’s a fee for that, too! The most popular Moroccan beverage is green tea served with mint leaves and other ingredients. Moroccans drink this tea all day, at each meal, and offering this beverage to guests is considered proper hospitality. For guests, it is important to note
that refusing a cup is considered very rude! How did green tea gain such popularity in the country? The story goes that in the nineteenth century, some British merchant ships became stranded off the coast of Morocco, and lucky for the Moroccans, the shipmasters saw no point in doing anything other than simply unloading their cargo…
