IN SEARCH OF BUTCHER PAPER (Re: Easy Does It, Issue 227) I love the fun Chanukah tablescape idea you featured, and I’d like to incorporate it into my Chanukah party decor. I can’t seem to find any butcher paper, though. Can you recommend a local store that sells it? Thank you so much! Planning My Party THE MONSEY VIEW RESPONDS: Three-foot-wide rolls can be found at most hardware stores. RHP (Ramapo Hardware and Paint) carries these. There are also narrower kraft paper rolls available at craft and gift shops that can be used as runners. If you wish to cover the entire table, you can double it in the width and tape the two pieces together.

(Re: Give Them Your Heart, Issue 227) Kudos to Tziri Herskovitz for a fantastic article! The concept she covered was fascinating, beautifully written and well-researched. Though the topic of this article is one I was familiar with before, she drove it home in a new way and helped me view my kids differently! At least for today, the article had a profound impact on my interactions with my children. It even affected my mood, for what better feeling is there than that of connecting with one’s children in a meaningful way? (It was interesting for me to recognize a different child in each of the love-languages, furthering the idea of “Chanoch l’naar al pi darko”!) I hope to carry the beautiful messages with me long-term, and I’m looking forward to the positive atmosphere it’s sure to engender in my home. Thank you so much! A Grateful Reader and Fan

THE BETTER OF TWO TREATS (Re: Chanukah Food, Issues 227 and 228) I’d like to prepare something really delicious (and different) for dessert on the first night of Chanukah to add some Chanukah flavor to the leftovers I serve on Sunday night. My family members do not touch any fillings or glazes, so I’d like to know which you think would be more flavorful unadorned: the churros featured in Issue 227 or the doughnut holes featured in Issue 228? D.F. We also accept cash payments

MIRIAM PESSY WERCBERGER RESPONDS: Both can be delicious without any dipping sauces. The churros are dipped in cinnamon sugar and the doughnut holes covered in confectioners’ sugar, so they can be eaten as is. I will say, though, that the jelly dipping sauce makes the holes taste like traditional jelly doughnuts and are super divine that way!

MORE TO MAOZ TZUR (Re: Warmed by Their Light and Song, Issue 228) Your halacha tidbits are very enlightening! Keep it up. In your recent Chanukah issue you discuss the many piyutim we say, among them Maoz Tzur, with additional stanzas added on. In the Sefer Mekor Chaim (by the author of Chavas Yair) on Shulchan Aruch (676:3), the author brings several extra stanzas, including some of his own. It is noteworthy that he also brings one stanza from the Rema with his name Moshe hinted to at the beginning of each line. Hatzlacha on your superb work. Eluzer Brieger Yeshiva Torah Vodaas

A SUPER-SUSPENSEFUL SERIAL (Re: The Cuckoo Clock; A Doughnut Station, Issue 228) I am so surprised that there are hardly any comments about your fantastic serial The Cuckoo Clock. I wait for it every week and relish every word. I can’t wait to find out how all the details wrap up into one story! I also want to thank you for the adorable doughnut station ideas. It is the perfect guide with perfect ideas for that perfect doughnut! Thanks a lot. C.L.

SAFETY IS PRICELESS (Re: Tricks of the Trade, Issue 228) I would like to start by thanking all of the parents who send tips to bus drivers. And to the bus driver requesting tips for an additional 30 seconds of wait time, I’d like to share how I see it. About a month ago, I was driving down a block where I have three pickups. I was 300 feet from a stop when a child running to the bus tripped in the middle of the street. B’chasdei Hashem, I was the only vehicle on the block at the time and immediately stopped my van. Since I was only going around 10 miles per hour, it took only a few seconds. I waited for the child to get up and finish crossing the street before I continued driving. Safety should always be a bus driver’s top priority, and the safest scenario is if every child is waiting where they are supposed to at the scheduled time. A great idea to implement in this icy cold weather is that parents

INBOX should form a chain call system in which one parent notifies the next one on the route when the bus gets to their home. Waiting for a child to come running to the bus is not worth any amount of money in the world. If a child gets hurt because they are running to catch the bus, who do you think will be blamed? Not the parents. Another Bus Driver

DON’T TEST MY PATIENCE (Re: Tricks of the Trade, Issue 228) On my daily short drive to work each morning, I find myself behind many school buses picking up our dear tinokos shel beis rabbon for a day of learning. I patiently wait for each child to get on and then for the bus to resume its ride, grateful that the safety of our children is a top priority. However, I was disturbed by the “extra 30 seconds” a bus driver offered in a letter last week. Can you imagine how my commute will look if each wait behind a bus will take another half a minute? I only hope I can keep up my patience if that were to occur. A Driver

YOUR VOICE NO LABELS, PLEASE When people ask you for information regarding a shidduch, please refrain from describing others with “labels.” People are subjective, and each person interprets a certain tag differently. I recently heard someone describe a Bais Yaakov girl by saying, “She looks like a chassidishe girl.” If the family she was redt to is very Litvish, something like this can throw them off! In such a case, just say something like, “She dresses very tznius’dig.” Although these “tags” are not negative on their own, certain parties may view them negatively. Another important thing not to do: Don’t draw comparisons! I once heard someone saying, “She’s very intelligent, like Leah [someone both parties know].” You never know what attitude the other party has toward Leah, and even though you only wanted to compare a positive trait, you may have thrown the potential mechutanim off by an innocent remark. While on the topic, I’d also like to mention that it is halachically not okay to describe a person’s looks or size

76 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 25, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

as this is something that can be seen from the outside. So please watch your words. Make sure to do no harm, because you surely mean only good! May we try to help the shidduch crisis, and not add to it, and may we hear besuros tovos. A Concerned Reader

A LETTER TO KLAL YISROEL In the past few weeks we have been struck with intense emotions more times than we’d like to count. Shocking stories have affected our community. Where do we turn? Who can give us guidance in such a terrifying time? A very erliche talmid chacham said that to know exactly what Hashem wants from us, one would need ruach hakodesh, which is uncommon in our days. Yet it is clear that Hashem wants something from us. America is a very comfortable galus. It makes it very easy for us to forget why and what we need to do here. These incidents are here to remind us that we have a mission and goal in this world. Klal Yisroel is so good. We constantly strive to do more. There is no other nation like ours. But perhaps our lives are too comfortable and materialistic for us to remember at all times what we owe our Master and to elevate our actions so they should be pure avodos Hashem. Maybe this fear is here to shake us out of our comfort zone and not let us forget our true purpose. The Chovos Halvovos has an entire shaar named Cheshbon Hanefesh, where Rabbeinu Bachya ben Yosef lists thirty thought processes that need to become a part of our being. This includes remembering what our purpose is and never letting our gashmius’dige actions override our ruchnius. As it says: “Cheshbon ha’adam im nafsho al mah she’avar m’yamav, im hisosek bahem b’avodas Elokav.” Let us not forget to put aside a few moments a day — even as little as two quiet minutes — to think about this concept. Hopefully, it will enable us all to have control over our weaknesses that disconnect us from our true calling. May we hear besuros tovos. Touched by Tragedies

ASK THE THERAPIST Q: I am a soft person. How can I talk to people who get angry easily or have a strong minded personality without being intimidated by them? A: I have found that communicating in question form to be a highly effective skill worth mastering. By that I mean, instead of speaking directly about what you want, frame it in the form of a question in order to decrease the chance of triggering the other person into an aggressive or defensive response. The following are examples for a boss, husband, teen, neighbor, principal, or anyone. 1. “I like working here very much and I’m sure you see how much I’m invested in your company, is now a good time to discuss a raise?” 2. “I realize we have a different point of view on how our money is spent, can you acknowledge that it’s not about being right or wrong, but just a different approach that can be worked out together?” 3. “I know you want to get together with your friends, what about helping me now for an hour and then going?” 4. “Do you think you could watch my child tomorrow for a time and I can watch yours when you need help?” 5. “My son is unhappy about the way some teachers discipline classmates. Can we come to the school to discuss this matter with you this week?” 6. “I see that your mood is down, would you like to discuss what is bothering you ?” It’s not hard to push buttons in most relationships. If we can learn to diffuse tension, by being aware of potential emotional triggers, we could have a calmer world. Asking Questions instead of making statements is a good tool to decrease defensive reactions for those who might be prone to feeling shame, or feeling they are being controlled or manipulated by others. PA RS H A S MIKEITZ I’d like to begin with a mashul attributed to the Chofetz Chaim. A man traveled to a distant island where diamonds were scattered everywhere, just as we would find rocks and pebbles outside. Upon his arrival, the man picked up a diamond, went to a shop, and tried to buy food, offering the diamond as payment. The shopkeeper refused to accept the diamond as payment. Diamonds were so plentiful on the island that they had no value to the inhabitants. The shopkeeper informed the man that the local currency was schmaltz. Seeing that he needed schmaltz to pay for food and lodging on the island, the man took a job that would pay him schmaltz. As the man acclimated to the local culture, and as he came to rely on schmaltz for all of his needs, his mindset began to shift. Schmaltz became precious to him, and he forgot the value of diamonds. When the ship finally arrived to bring the man home, he loaded it with barrels of schmaltz, all of which spoiled on the long journey home. Thankfully, he found a few diamonds in the lin-

ing of his pocket, so he was able to support his family in some comfort, but he had squandered his opportunity to amass great wealth. In Parshas Mikeitz, Paroh dreams of seven robust cows that are consumed by seven emaciated cows. Paroh then dreams of seven ripe sheaves of grain that are devoured by seven lean, parched sheaves of grain. Paroh summons Yosef Hatzaddik to interpret the dreams, and Yosef predicts seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine. Yosef advises Paroh to “seek out an understanding and wise man and appoint him over the land of Mitzrayim (Bereishis 41:33). R’ Elyah Lopian, ztl, asks why Yosef advises Paroh to appoint someone who is “understanding and wise. Why would a person overseeing the collection and storage of food need these specific traits? R’ Elyah Lopian answers that it is difficult for a person in times of plenty to realize the importance of stockpiling every single grain possible for the upcoming famine. This desperation of starvation drove people during World War II to trade gold for bread and hoard every morsel of food they encountered; Paroh’s appointee would have to have that same

We are meant to learn to treasure every drop of kedushah from the time of Chanukah and store it away for the rest of the year.

sense of urgency over storing every grain possible even during a time of great abundance. Only a man of wisdom and understanding would maintain that sense of urgency for seven years straight. R’ Elyah Lopian points out that Parshas Mikeitz falls on Chanukah most years, so almost every Chanukah we read about how the people in Mitzrayim carefully stored as much produce from the years of plenty as they could. What is the connection between this story and Chanukah? R’ Elyah Lopian concludes

      Â

that we are meant to learn to treasure every drop of kedushah from the time of Chanukah and store it away for the rest of the year. Chanukah is a time that is filled with an abundance of kedushah, and we should learn to fill our storehouses with kedushah so that the light of Chanukah will remain with us for the rest of the year. We see a parallel of this in the Chanukah story itself. The Makabim search high and low until they find a single bottle of oil that had been sealed and stamped by the Kohen Gadol. That bottle contained only enough oil to light the menorah one time, but it lasted for eight days. A person who is not “understanding and wise” might not appreciate the full magnitude of the miracle of finding even a single day’s oil, let alone eight days of oil; but in reality, it was so significant that we continue to rejoice over the nes until today. We must learn from these stories and not be like the man in the Chofetz Chaim’s mashul. We were sent to this world, where mitzvos — the true treasures we are meant to gather and bring to the Next World — are in abundant supply. But we can be influenced by the culture of this world, which values material gain and pleasure, and does not value mitzvos. Whatever material possessions we may accumulate will “spoil” on our journey to the next world. When we arrive in the next world, will we have to search our pockets for a few diamonds? We are only in this world for a limited amount of time. May we all be “understanding and wise” and stockpile mitzvos with great alacrity. *Name has been changed in this true story.

Cuomo Assigns More Than $10M to Protect Yeshivos and Other Religious Institutions Just one week after terror struck Jersey City’s Jewish community, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo rushed to pledge over $10 million to provide security enhancements over and above existing allocations that would offer greater protection against hate crimes. Cuomo had previously dedicated almost $15 million to protect faith-based schools, institutions and cultural centers through the state’s Security Communities Against Hate Crimes Grant Program in 2018, with an additional $25 million put in place in New York’s 2019 budget plan. The grant will be administered by the NYS Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services and will provide up to $50,000 in funding for security training, cameras, improved lighting, door modifications, technology and other upgrades at eligible facilities. Organizations that have multiple facilities can submit up to three applications for a total request of up to $150,000 in funding. "The cancer of hate and division spreading across this country is repugnant to the values of diversity and inclusion we hold dear in New York," said Cuomo. "We are continuing to do everything we can to stamp out threats and acts of violence targeting religious and cultural institutions, and this new grant funding will allow many of these organizations to enhance their security measures and help keep people safe." The state’s Division of Human Rights and the New York State Police will be operating a hotline established by the governor where callers can report any hate crimes or acts of bias or discrimination. Anyone who has been the target of any incidents of this nature can report it at 888-3923644 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday, or by texting “HATE” to 81336. The state will also be offering $5,000 in reward money for anyone providing information leading to an arrest and conviction in connection with a hate crime.

Outdoor Menorah Sponsored by Metrex Realty Unveiled at Good Samaritan The cold weather was no match for the warmth that was everywhere as a massive outdoor menorah was dedicated at the main entrance of Good Sam Hospital in

Suffern. Numerous elected officials joined senior hospital staff for the event, which took place on December 19. The menorah was sponsored by Metrex Realty, and owner Meyer Tauber told The Monsey View that he felt strongly about replacing the small menorah that the hospital had used in the past in celebration of Chanukah with something more elaborate. Dr. Mary Leahy, CEO of the Bons Secours Charity Group, which operates both Good Sam and is part of Westchester Medical Center, spoke about what it means to be a true community hospital. “At GSH, we are proud to embrace the diversity of our community,” said Dr. Leahy. “This commitment to diversity is evident in the compassionate care that we give to our patients and their families each and every day.” The festivities included live music; a toy-wrapping drive, with gifts to be distributed at Westchester Medical Center’s Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital; as well as fresh latkes and donuts sponsored by Chabad of Suffern. Among those who spoke were Rabbi Shmuel Gancz of Chabad of Suffern, District Attorney-Elect Tom Walsh and Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht. Susan Lippe announced the launch of a $500 fund to benefit a Hatzolah member each year in memory of her husband Dr. Michael Lippe, the longtime director of the hospital’s emergency room who died in a 2012 plane crash. Mrs. Lippe credited Hatzolah members for their lifesaving work, noting that she hoped her husband’s memory would live on through their efforts. Tauber noted that Good Sam is a community fixture, one that many people pass through every day. Both of his sons were born in the hospital, which has been serving the area since 1902. He worked with Rabbi Yisroel Kahan and Sister Susan Evelyn of Good Sam to make his dream of a menorah become a reality. “May the light of the menorah guide us in our daily lives and shine brightness across the world,” Tauber said.

Recap: A distraught Blumi tells her husband that she is the one responsible for the yad that went missing. In Australia, Joe Ludmir helps clear out his deceased business partner’s home. He calls the Potolskys to thank them for their condolence note and to follow up on their offer to learn in Mr. Korman’s memory. “You know what condition I was in when I got to my parents’ house that morning…” Blumi said as she jerkily folded the blanket. The hotel room was beginning to stifle her. She wanted to be in her own home, in her own room. But how could she go home now? The simplest solution would be to ask Beri about the bachur who had been at the house that night. But she couldn’t admit to Beri that this was what had been on her mind during those moments. It was bad enough admitting it to herself. “Not that that was on my mind at the time,” she heard herself explaining to Gideon. “Really, it wasn’t!” She sat down on the bed, fingering the orange cyclamen flower printed on the velour blanket. And why would a designer even choose orange cyclamens, she wondered vaguely. “What wasn’t on your mind?” Her husband was trying to follow her train of thought — albeit not very successfully. “The yad. My father’s silver yad.” “Hmmm,” he said, with commendable patience. “And then?” A banal

phrase that doesn’t give away how little you understand of what the other person is saying... “I wanted to go into the room where Tatty was,” she said, her eyes wide. He could see that, again, she was reliving those difficult moments of frantic packing, the flight, landing in Eretz Yisroel… “And then I saw that the cabinet in the hallway was open. It was a little strange, because when had it been opened, and what for? I got nervous that thieves had managed to enter. The shelves were almost empty; it hadn’t been a very full cabinet to begin with. I stuck my hand in and felt the envelope.” “The envelope?” “Where my father had hidden his silver yad.” “I see. Nu?” “It was only when I stood at the door of the room that I saw…” Her voice broke. “That apparently the one who had opened the cabinet had been Beri, to take out my mother’s old copper candlesticks. You know, when they got married after the war, my father didn’t have money to buy her more expensive can-

dlesticks, so he purchased something simple. Beri had just taken them out to light two candles…” She stared at the orange cyclamen. “But at that moment, I wasn’t thinking about the candlesticks. I was thinking about this yad, and the fact that anyone who came in there could just pull it out of the cabinet, like I did. So I asked the bachur who was learning in the room to hold on to it until we’d come back from the levayah, to make sure it wouldn’t get stolen. I was sure that the boy was the upstairs neighbor’s son. He looked so much like my friend who lives upstairs…” She got up from the bed. “And where do you get bachurim at 3:30 in the morning, if not from the neighbors in the building?” “And it wasn’t your friend’s son?” “No. Not at all.” She began to pace the room “They are kohanim. And I have no idea who this bachur was,

Which one of your brothers arranged to have these bachurim come?” “How can I find that out?” She stopped pacing, and all of a sudden, the tears began to roll down her cheeks. “Not only am I ashamed of myself, because how could I think of such a thing at a time like that, but how am I going to tell this to my brothers now?” “Ultimately, you did something that made sense,” her businessman husband soothed her, trying to get her to see reason. “There was a story here with a valuable item. You didn’t start running around doing strange things that were inappropriate for the time and occasion. You just took about twenty seconds to deal with the matter, and that was it. Why are you looking at it as such a bad thing?” “Because it is.” She leaned her head on the windowpane beside her. “It’s a terrible thing for a good daughter to do, a few hours before her father’s levayah. My brothers will say that this is what has become of me.” His cell phone rang for the fifth time, but he silenced it. “Do you want me to find out who the bachur was? It’s not a big deal, and I don’t have to tell your brothers why I’m asking.” “They’ll get suspicious,” Blumi said quietly. “No, I don’t want you to ask.” “Not even casually, like by the way? You know, I’m not a bad diplomat. I can ask Beri or Shmulik

how it works in Eretz Yisroel when there is a death in a house, and which bachurim people hire in such a case.” “Which bachurim they hire? You mean which ones volunteer, right?” “Volunteer? No, I meant hired.” “What?!” She turned around, erasing the reflection of her tearful face in the window. “Are you trying to tell me that they get paid for this?” “I assume so. But you know what?” He backtracked hastily when he saw the horror on her face. “I really don’t know how it works. And that’s not our issue here, anyway. So, should I ask Beri?” “No. Don’t ask him anything.” Gideon thought for a minute. “You know,” he said, “I don’t think it will be necessary in any case.” “Why?” “Because where is the bachur himself? You don’t know where to even start looking, but he knows, right? He’s keeping this envelope for you, and as time goes by, it’s safe to assume that at one point he’s going to want to give it back.” “But whom is he going to give it to?” Gideon wanted to answer, “To the person who asked him to come that night.” But a glimmer in his wife’s eyes stopped him. Instead, he quickly replied, “He’ll probably try to find out who gave him the envelope, and then he’ll contact us.” Blumi’s silence stretched for a lengthy few minutes. “And what happens until then?” she asked, long after Gideon had already given up on her response and had answered his secretary’s phone call. When she discovered that she was talking to herself, she stood up and walked into the washroom. “I wanted to pay my brothers to give me this yad,” she said to her redfaced reflection in the mirror, and then started to wash her face with lots of cold water. “But in the mean-

time there is nothing to do, just wait patiently and hope that none of them will remember the yad, in spite of the fuss I made over it this evening.” She took a deep breath, inhaling the piney scent of the hand soap that stood in a decorative dispenser on the counter. “I simply need to wait for that bachur to realize that no one is planning to come and ask for it back, and that he needs to come to us.” Blumi nodded at herself in the mirror and felt a little better. In fact, much better. ***** “Is everything alright, Binyamin?” Elisheva asked when they met in her father’s room on Friday afternoon. “Yes, baruch Hashem.”

I won’t disturb you. This is your grandson, isn’t it?” “Yes.” Reb Yisroel smiled at Binyamin, who was busy staring at the tiny head that peeked out of the man’s jacket pocket. “It looks like a baby kangaroo,” Binyamin said, after a moment. “They’re funny, these toy dogs.” “They’re smarter than they look,” Emmanuel told him. He set the cup down on the little table near the armchair and opened the drawer to take out two colored pills. “You haven’t taken your medication yet today, Reb Yisroel, have you? Good, then you can take these pills now with your tea.” Binyamin grinned at the dog and reached out to see if the tiny creature would want to come to him. But instead, the little dog bared its teeth in a decidedly unfriendly gesture, and then snapped them together. Despite their tiny size, the snapping teeth made a loud noise in the room. “Come on, why is he so edgy?” Binyamin was almost offended, but his mother breathed a sigh of relief. The last thing she wanted was for the little dogs to start frolicking around the room. “He must have interpreted your move as a threat,” Emmanuel explained, and pushed the little dog a bit further into his pocket. Another, darker head peeked out over the edge, but it didn’t look particularly friendly either. “He felt either a threat to me or to him. They want to protect their owners, these little Chihuahua dogs. They are a lot like humans, and sometimes they mistakenly interpret a friendly gesture as an offensive move.” “So that makes them less similar to people,” Binyamin remarked. “Dogs are one thing, but I would expect a person to be able to identify who is a friend and who is a foe.” “Really?” Emmanuel didn’t smile. “You don’t know people who sit and tremble about something that seems very frightening to

But his smile seemed a bit too forced for her. She wanted to press him further, to find out if his pale face and the shadows under his eyes were just remnants of his lingering flu, or if he was in a dismal mood for some reason. But just then someone knocked three times and entered the room, without waiting to be invited in. “How are you, Reb Yisroel?” It was Emmanuel, the tall man who worked in the nursing home. “Oh, very nice, it’s good that you have visitors. Very good.” Elisheva’s father smiled at the man. “Is everything alright?” he asked in a low voice. “Of course it is. Here is your tea.

them, when in reality they don’t have anything to be afraid of?” No, Binyamin wanted to scream. I don’t know any such people. And even if I do, I can’t think about those kinds of incidents right now. The only thing I can think about is a yeshivah bachur who is shaking in fear, but for very good reason. Because when a certain woman, or her family members, come to him and ask for the closed envelope he was given to hold on to, he won’t have what to show them. The more he thought about it, the more frightened he became. What was in that envelope? How much was it worth? How much would he be expected to pay? Silberman, his chavrusa, did not know why Binyamin had asked recently to learn with him the sugya of monetary damage and shomer chinam (one who is asked to guard something without pay). When would

What was in that envelope? How much was it worth? How much would he be expected to pay? he be obligated to pay for damages, and when would he be exempt? Binyamin had to be ready for that day when someone would come seeking out what they had left with him. Shabsi also could not understand why, yesterday, Binyamin had refused to come with him on a night shift. Binyamin himself couldn’t explain it, either. He had stammered an excuse about still being weak from the flu, and Shabsi had accepted the excuse, but with a pointedly raised eyebrow. Really, Binyamin couldn’t understand his own refusal. What would happen to him if he went with Shabsi to another job? Someone would give him an envelope again? One thing was for sure — this time he would refuse to take it. But he didn’t want to go on another job with Shabsi altogether. He felt totally spent by the whole subject, and only regretted that he hadn’t felt the same way before that night he’d spent at the Katz home. Emmanuel had long left the room, and Mommy was chatting with Zeidy. As always, she asked if he wanted to come for Shabbos. As always, he declined. Then she asked something else, and he answered with one or two words. Now it sounded like they were talking about this new worker, Emmanuel. Zeidy was pleased with him, Mommy less so. Something about the figure with the dogs did not find favor in her eyes. Maybe it was because of the dogs, or perhaps it was something about the person himself. Or it was a combination of both. To be continued...

House Votes to Impeach the President but Delays Sending Articles of Impeachment to the Senate THE PULSE: The House of Representatives voted to impeach President Trump mostly along party lines. Article I on Abuse of Power passed by a vote of 230 to

108 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 25, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

197, while Article II on Obstruction of Justice passed by a vote of 229 to 198. No Republicans voted in favor of either article. The lone non-Democrat who voted in favor of impeachment was Justin Amash (I-MI). Amash was elected as a Republican and helped found the Conservative Freedom Caucus but is currently an independent. A handful of Democratic members of Congress abstained or opposed impeachment. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) hailed the vote to impeach as “an act of moral courage but has so far failed to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate for trial. Her failure to immediately send the articles to the Senate has subjected her to withering criticism from Republicans, who accuse her of putting political concerns ahead of constitutional duty.

WHY THE DELAY? The delay in sending the articles

to the Senate is an attempt by Nancy Pelosi to leverage her power over her Republican Senate colleagues. She is trying to get the Senate to agree to hold a full trial with witnesses called and evidence presented. She would like the Senate to call administration officials with knowledge of the Ukraine dealings, such as Mick Mulvaney, John Bolton and Rudy Giuliani, to testify. Pelosi is concerned that the Republican majority in the Senate will seek to dismiss the charges without proper investigation and deliberation. The comments of Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) buttress her concerns, as both have publicly stated that they would not be impartial jurors in a Senate trial. This is troubling, because the constitution requires that Senators take an oath of impartiality before serving as jurors at an impeachment trial. Pelosi is gambling that Republicans are eager to put impeachment behind them and that they will ultimately agree to concede to some of her demands.

Buttigieg and the Wine Cave Fundraiser THE PULSE: At the most recent Democratic Presidential debate in Los Angeles, Mayor Pete Buttigieg was attacked by Senator Elizabeth Warren for holding a fundraiser at the Napa Valley wine cave of a billionaire donor. Businessman Andrew Yang and Senator Bernie Sanders echoed the criticism. The fundraiser was held at the Hall Rutherford Wine Cave. The cave features handmade Austrian brick recovered from sites in and around Vienna. It is lined with highpriced barrels of wine. At the center of the cave is a chandelier made of 1,500 Swarovski crystals. Sanders and Warren sought to portray Buttigieg as beholden to deep-pocketed donors. THE IMPACT: This flare-up highlights the newest

WHY NOT? The constitution delegates responsibil-

ity for an impeachment trial to the Senate. The nature of the trial proceedings is subject to Senate agreement and does not fall under the purview or domain of the House of Representatives. There is a strong argument that Pelosi is overstepping constitutional bounds by attempting to force a Senate trial on more amenable terms. THE IMPACT: The Senate requires a simple majority

vote to decide on the procedures of an impeachment trial. The Republicans currently have a three-seat majority. If only a handful of Senators defy the majority leader, the result can be a proper trial. It is possible that some Republican Senators, such as Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Mitt Romney of Utah, who have previously expressed their concerns and misgivings over the president’s actions, may acquiesce to Democratic demands. Additionally, President Trump has voiced his support for a full trial, as he believes that it will ultimately vindicate him and enable him to inflict damage on the Democrats in the process. In truth, the position of McConnell is somewhat untenable, because if nothing improper occurred, why not call witnesses to clarify what happened? The concerns expressed by Republicans during the hearings in the House of an overtly partisan and unfair process are mitigated by the fact that Republicans control the Senate.

divide among the Democratic candidates. Warren and Sanders are attempting to portray themselves as populist representatives of the ordinary people. They are seeking to contrast themselves with billionaire candidates such as Tom Steyer and Michael Bloomberg, whom they accuse of using their wealth to purchase outsized political influence. They are attempting to paint Buttigegg in a similar light, thereby presenting themselves as the truly authentic candidates. However, Warren exposed herself to charges of hypocrisy when it was revealed that she had previously held an exclusive fundraiser at The City Winery Boston. At her fundraiser event, each donor who contributed $1,000 or more received a souvenir bottle of wine. INTERESTING FACTS: Wine Caves are underground structures used for storing barrels of wine. They help keep the barrels of wine at ideal temperatures and levels of humidity. It is best to store wine barrels at cooler temperatures, and the wine caves in California’s Napa Valley protect the barrels from the summer heat. Additionally, the high levels of humidity that are present in the caves prevent evaporation of the wine. In Northern California, wines kept in a surface warehouse evaporate four times faster than those stored in an underground cave. Many wine caves are quite elaborate structures, and many wineries in Sonoma and the Napa Valley provide guided tours of their wine caves.

SALADS TO TOSS

AND FRIED TOPPERS TOO

By: Leah Stern Photo credit: C. Tarkieltaub

Not every Chanukah night is party night, but I still like to serve something fried at every evening meal. Each of these boldly colored and flavorful starters include a Chanukahthemed topper. To elevate even a simple meal, plate the salads individually at each place setting.

Fish Nugget Salad

LatkeTopped Salad 116 / THE MONSEY VIEW

Latke-Topped Salad If your family can’t get enough of potato latkes, this is the salad you want to try. Don’t have the time to prep all those minis? Prepare half a 9x13 kugel recipe. Bake at 375° in a lined and generously oiled cookie sheet for approximately a half hour. Cut into small squares. The kugel version serves six. Latke recipe yields approximately 60 minis.

LATKES 2 potatoes

1 tsp. salt

2 eggs

Dash of black pepper

SALAD ½ cup black olives

1 (8 oz.) bag romaine lettuce

Mozzarella cheese or string cheese (optional)

1 box medley grape tomatoes

Fish Nugget Salad Unexpected company prompted me to think fast one Chanukah evening. I had prepared batter-fried flounder, which I knew wouldn’t stretch to serve the larger-than-expected crowd. I pulled out some gefilte fish, cubed it, and deep fried it. Much to my surprise, the improvised substitute — the gefilte fish nuggets — won hands down over the batter-fried flounder. Serves ten.

SALAD 1 good-quality roll salmon gefilte fish

12–15 mini peppers, sliced

1 bag purple cabbage 2 cups bean sprouts 1 box alfalfa sprouts

DRESSING

6 purple pearl onions

DRESSING ¼ cup oil

1–1½ tsp. mustard

¼ cup ketchup

¼ tsp. salt

1 T. sugar

Pinch of black pepper

2 tsp. vinegar

2 cloves garlic

DIRECTIONS 1. Finely shred potatoes and mix with remaining latke ingredients. Fry in a large heated frying pan, using approximately ¾ teaspoon per latke.

½ cup mayonnaise

2–3 cloves garlic

1¾ T. mustard

½ tsp. salt

1¾ T. honey

DIRECTIONS 1. To make the fish nuggets, heat oil in a deep fryer or pot. Allow fish to thaw for 10 minutes. Cut roll into ten slices, and each slice into cubes. Fry in hot oil for 3 to 5 minutes until golden. Remove with slotted spoon.

2. Blend all dressing ingredients.

2. Blend all dressing ingredients. Divide vegetables evenly among ten plates. Plate fried nuggets over vegetables. Serve with dressing.

3. Divide salad ingredients among plates. Slice tomatoes, onions and cheese (if using). Top with latkes. Serve with dressing.

Note: For better-quality rolls, buy gefilte fish directly from your fish store. I like the Kosher Atlantic brand.

Fruits and Shoots Salad

118 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 25, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Fruits and Shoots Salad Refreshingly different, this combination is the perfect beginning to a Chanukah meal.

Layered Blintz Pie Delicate leaves layered with a light and airy filling make for a perfect accompaniment to this salad.

CREPES 4 eggs

½ cup oil

1 cup flour

¼ cup sour cream

1 box pea shoots

½ cup milk

¼ cup sugar

1–2 mangos

½ cup seltzer

1 tsp. vanilla sugar

SALAD

1 Granny Smith apple ½ cup sugar-coated peanuts

DRESSING

DIRECTIONS 1. Using hand blender, blend all ingredients. 2. Heat oil in a small frying pan.

¼ cup oil

3. Pour small amount of batter into pan and tilt pan to spread evenly over surface.

1 T. vinegar

4. Fry until dry.

4 tsp. sugar

5. Flip over and fry only until dry. Crepes should not brown.

1½ tsp. salt

FILLING

Dash of black pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix all dressing ingredients. Arrange pea shoots on a plate. Slice mango thinly and fan three slices over pea shoots. Dice apples finely and sprinkle over pea shoots. 2. Distribute peanuts over salad right before serving as red coloring will bleed over salad. Drizzle a ½ tablespoon of dressing over each plate. Serve alongside a cheese blintz or a slice of blintz pie.

½ lb. farmer cheese

3 T. sugar

½ container whipped cream cheese

3 T. confectioners’ sugar

3 T. sour cream

2 tsp. vanilla sugar

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix all ingredients. 2. To assemble, layer crepes, spreading filling between layers. 3. Decorate top with whip cream. Short on time? Serve salad with store-bought cheese blintzes.

Throughout the ages, through fire and ice, the umos ha’olam have persecuted and devastated our nation. They’ve attempted to extinguish our flame, our essence — and at times it appeared as if they’d succeeded. Just a few decades ago, the Jewish landscape in Ukraine looked barren and desolate. But the Yiddishe spirit survives and thrives in the harshest of climates — our light growing stronger and brighter. Because we’ve been promised eternity. We will never disappear.

A LONE CANDLE It was the first night of Chanukah, and Rabbi Hilel Cohen had just left his home on Shchekavytska Street and was heading to the Podil Shul, just two blocks away. On those frigid Ukrainian nights, he typically made the trip as briskly as possible, but the twinkling of a small light caught his eye. Right above his own apartment, in a dark window, Reb Hilel noticed a small candle burning. There was something familiar about the glow, the way it resembled the single candle in his own window right below it. Reb Hilel chalked it up to coincidence and hurried along. Having lived in this apartment for over two years, it was rather unlikely that unbeknownst to him, there would be a Jew living right above him. The following night, Reb Hilel stepped outdoors and peeked again

126 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 25, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

at the window above. And there it was. Only this time there were two candles. Excitedly, he ran up the stairs and knocked on the door. He received no answer. On the third day there were three candles, but the door remained closed. Whoever this Yid was, he clearly was not eager to engage with the very obviously Jewish rabbi. “We eventually made contact,” Rabbi Cohen shares. “He wasn’t very forthcoming at first, but he did say that he heard our Shabbos zemiros every week, and that it never failed to move him. It took some time, but he started joining us for Shabbos meals and is becoming more familiar with Yiddishkeit. Progress is slow, as the best form of progress often is,” Reb Hilel says, “but the important thing is: Another door has been opened.” With time and effort, hundreds of doors are opening. At first just

a crack, but with persistence and much siyata d’Shmaya, many a door has opened wide.

HOLY SOIL DESECRATED It was only a century ago that Yiddishkeit in Ukraine was lost. Before that, for over one thousand years, the Jews were a vibrant presence. Some of the biggest gedolim and rebbes of yesteryear lived there, including the Baal Shem Tov, Reb Nachman of Breslov and Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev, zt”l. Nonetheless, though Yiddishe life flourished, there were incessant blood libels, pogroms, expulsions and even a mass execution. By 1917, the USSR was in power and all religious practices were categorically forbidden. About 25 years later, the already decimated Jewish community was visited by the Holocaust. Prior to the war, Yidden may

KYIV, UKRAINE Present-day Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine, a country that gained their independence from Russia in 1991, and this year they even went so far as to change the spelling of their name from the Russian transliteration Kiev to Kyiv, as it is transliterated from Ukrainian. In the city of close to 3 million citizens, it is impossible to accurately calculate the number of Yidden therein. There have been many censuses over the years, but aside from the rapid decline in numbers, which may well be due to emigration, there is also the tragic reality of assimilation and lack of any affiliation. After nearly a century of fearing for their lives and lacking the ability to inculcate Jewish values into the new generation, the robust Yiddishe life that had flourished for hundreds of years has been eradicated. By the time the Iron Wall fell, few remembered any Yiddishkeit. Still fewer practiced it.

Relish the rings

have accounted for as much as a third of the population in some of the cities in Ukraine. After the war, Stalin appeared to have succeeded where the Nazis, ym”sh, had failed. It seemed as if the country had, in fact, become judenrein, r”l. In 1991, the Iron Curtain fell. Blinking against the unfamiliar sunlight, it was time to assess what had survived the almost-80-year storm. Tragically, none of the frum Yidden who had prayed for this day were around to see it. Sadder still, after having had their identity suppressed for so many years, few still recognized its value — that there was, in fact, a priceless heritage to be reclaimed.

DESOLATE DEVASTATION Under Stalin’s rule, Russia managed to successfully recreate the Greek scourge, which “merely” asked of us to renounce our religion. The government’s directive wasn’t to annihilate the Jews — just Judaism. Anyone caught practicing or teaching Yiddishkeit was promptly arrested and shipped off to the Gulag, the Russian forced-labor camps. Eternally hopeful, Russian Yidden waited for the

tide to change, when they’d have the opportunity to once again raise their children with Yiddishe values. Lamentably, that day never came for them. For a clearer understanding of the mindset at the time, Rabbi Cohen speaks of two elderly spinsters whom he had gotten to know upon his arrival in Ukraine. They were the daughters of a chashuve Yid by the name of Rav Yitzchok Gedalya Libason, z”l, a grandson of the Chernoble rebbes and Reb Lieber Hagadol. “De Tatte told us not to marry,” the women explained, “so we never got married.” Rav Libason recognized that heartbreaking truth: Though he wanted the best for his daughters, there wasn’t anything positive in store. With no possibility of raising children in a world with Yiddishkeit, of what purpose was a future generation? They had stared into the abyss and surrendered.

DO NOT ENTER “Starting in 1917, tens of thousands of shuls around the country were shuttered,” Reb Hilel says.

A wedding in Kyiv

“Our shul in the center of the town of Kyiv was one of the two synagogues in all of Russia that remained open throughout communist rule.” (The other one was the Arkhipova Choral Synagogue located near the Kremlin.) Though ostensibly open, the shuls weren’t intended for public use. They merely served as a prop for the communist regime, an answer to the foreign countries who de-

nounced the religious persecution. Pointing to the two beautiful shuls, Russia claimed religious tolerance — though the tolerance didn’t extend past the beautiful buildings. Still, for millions of Ukrainian Yidden, the monument in Kyiv was their sole link to Yiddishkeit. Though they never set foot inside, the edifice was a connection to a past they had only heard about in hushed voices.

An older grade in cheder

Legend has it that for many years, on Yom Kippur, up to 30,000 Yidden milled around the building throughout the day, though barely any dared step inside. Participating in services risked imprisonment; the annual trek around the shul had to suffice in quelching their soul’s yearning. The Nazi’s arrival further devastated any remnants of Yiddishe life. It was with blatant hashgacha pratis that the shul survived the occupation. Likely intended as an insult, the Germans turned the grand shul into a stable for their horses — but it was because of that that it survived, practically unscathed. Tragically, the same can’t be said for the Kyiv Yidden. During the course of the Holocaust, the city had its own mass execution. At a ravine near the northern edge of the city, for two days in September of 1941, in the massacre known as Babi Yar, the Jewish community was systematically annihilated. After the Holocaust, Stalin remained in power until his death in 1953. The Yidden who returned, broken in both body and spirit, found that their lives were still conscripted under the communist regime. But though these hapless souls sorely lacked knowledge of Yiddishkeit, they built a magnificent aron kodesh for the shul. “Every time I look at the aron kodesh, my heart swells and I’m once again humbled by the resilience of Yiddishe kinder,” Rabbi Cohen remarks. Beyond the masterful craftsmanship, there is heart evident in every wood carving. One of the builders was a Yid who had lost his entire family — twenty-nine kedoshim in all. “Look at what a Yid is,” Reb Hilel marvels. “After the Holocaust, after all they’d experienced, they could have lost their entire emunah, but they went and built an aron kodesh!”

Rabbi Hilel Cohen explaining the esrog to a Kyiv Yid

THE LONE CRUSE Upon the fall of the Iron Curtain, some pioneering Yidden traveled to the bleak wasteland in the hopes of finding something to salvage. In the late 1980s, Rav Yaakov Dov Bleich, a Brooklyn native and Telshe Yeshiva graduate, arrived on the scene. He was soon appointed Chief Rabbi of Kyiv and Ukraine by the local Yiddishe communities, and though there have, baruch Hashem, been others who’ve devoted themselves to the community, it is Rabbi Bleich who has always been recognized by the government as Chief Rabbi. Reb Hilel is proud of the fact that it is their shul’s rabbi who has worked so tirelessly on behalf of the community. vos, three kollelim, two cheders and a Bais Yaakov for girls, in addition to many other Yiddishe institutions and community organizations. “Our pride and joy is the first and only Jewish summer camp in Ukraine, Camp Shuva,” Reb Hilel says. (See photo below.)

LIGHTS IN THE DARK NIGHT Rabbi Hilel Cohen’s arrival in Kyiv twenty years ago was rather unintentional — and another demonstration of Hashem’s guiding hand. Having arrived in Ukraine

right before Shavuos, he was intent on heading to Medzhybizh for the Baal Shem Tov’s yahrtzeit. It was then that he first met Reb Leibel Surkis, a Skvere chassid. Reb Leibel asked Reb Hilel to come to Vinnytsia for yom tov, and Reb Hilel was quite reluctant. The plan had been to be in Medzhybizh “beim rebben,” with the Baal Shem, and the detour wasn’t very welcome. “But then,” Reb Hilel says, “Reb Leibel opened my eyes and asked, ‘What would the Baal Shem Tov do in this situation?’ “‘There are Yidden who are waiting for you,’ he told me. ‘They want to see and feel Yiddishkeit. Instead of spending your Shabbos with the tzaddik, you can bring the Baal Shem Tov to these Yidden.’ “Reb Leibel’s words resonated with me, and I haven’t looked back.” Starting in Vinnytsia, a small town between Berditchev and Medzhybizh, Rabbi Cohen was soon leading the small community and local school. This was mere years after communism, and there were still locals speaking Yiddish and curious about their lost heritage.

THE SEARCH IS ON A cruse of pure oil isn’t hard to come by. Yid after Yid that Reb Hilel encounters, though unaffiliated

A WORLD THAT WAS The streets in Kyiv are once again bustling with Jewish life, but they’re still a far cry from Yiddishkeit of yesteryear, when Ukraine had been home to innumerable chassidish rebbes whose avodas Hashem were legendary. Though they are gone, they have not been forgotten. Over the past decades, the kevarim of countless tzaddikim all around Ukraine have been restored, and with each passing year, throngs of Yidden show up to pour their hearts out at the gravesites of these giants.

Skip the tears

In Kyiv alone, there’s the Malbim, near Babi Yar (although the chelka was identified, the specific spot is still uncertain); the kever of Reb Dovid’l Skverer, who passed away 100 years ago (5680); Reb Itzikel Skverer, who perished during an epidemic in town; and right outside of Kyiv is the tzion of Reb Mottele of Chernobl. The ohel of the Baal Hatanya, too, draws tens of thousands annually to Haditch, Ukraine.

and unaware, possesses a pure spark. “They are all ‘shomrei Torah u’mitzvah,’” Reb Hilel explains. Not “mitzvos,” because they hadn’t learned about them, “but every Yid here has that one mitzvah that they hold on to with all their heart and soul. The one element of Yiddishkeit that has been passed down for generations, their one dear connection to who they are.” Some come only for the Pesach matzos, some show up for Yizkor; some on Purim, and some on Chanukah, but every one of them holds on to their observance of their mitzvah as if it encompasses all of Yiddishkeit — because to them it does. On his first Yom Kippur in Ukraine, Rabbi Bleich wondered why everyone said Kaddish. He soon learned that these were the remnants of the survivors of Babi Yar, the mass execution that occurred three days before Yom Kippur, in the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah. One of the community members related that he had grown up on the local Shchekavytska Street and was a baby during the war. His father had already been sent to the front, and when all of the towns-

people were directed to congregate outside of town, his bubba told her daughter that she didn’t have a good feeling about it. Heeding the warning, his mother hid, along with her baby, and they were some of the only ones spared. Though he survived, barely any Yiddishkeit did. In recent years, thanks to the efforts of those who worked tirelessly to rekindle the flames, his son has returned to Yiddishkeit and settled in Eretz Yisroel with his beautiful, frum family that makes his grandfather proud.

THE MENORAH IS KINDLED Education has always been at the core of who we are as a people. Today, Yidden of all ages are expressing an interest in learning more about Shabbos, kashrus, of the basics of Yiddishkeit, and some people even well past their prime are requesting assistance in arranging for a kosher bris milah. “When I arrived, there were only two Yiddishe communities here,” Reb Hilel shares. “One was Chabad and one was Skver.” At present there are seven kehillos in Kyiv alone, with the third mikvah currently being built. But though the number of re-

The local yeshivah bachurim

ligious people is, baruch Hashem, growing by leaps and bounds, the majority of frum adults leave to start their families in established communities. The mass exodus to places like Lakewood, Philadelphia, Monsey, Flatbush and Eretz Yisroel do the heart proud, but also accounts for the relatively slower growth locally.

IN THE WAYS OF THE BAAL SHEM As many mekomos are recovered and restored, there are ever larger

crowds coming to daven at kivrei tzaddikim. Reb Hilel has a request of all of these Yidden, much like Reb Leibel Surkis had asked of him: “For just one Shabbos, won’t you consider the Baal Shem Tov’s derech and follow in his footsteps?” Rabbi Hillel implores, “Spend time with your Jewish brethren! Come into town for a Shabbos. Show them what a frum Yid looks like. Come light a spark. “You can realistically emulate the derech haBaal Shem, and you can bring them the Chanukah light.”

MORE ABOUT RABBI HILEL COHEN The Makabim were not the strong warriors that our coloring books tend to depict; they were simple ehrliche Yidden who recognized that if they wouldn’t step up and do something, then all would be lost. Reb Hilel Cohen likes to consider himself a regular person, and perhaps he once was. But what this humble Breslover chassid has accomplished on the frozen Eastern European tundra is nothing short of remarkable. Visiting a foreign country typically means forgoing the services of Hatzolah, Chaverim, Shomrim and the like. In Ukraine, when any need arises, Reb Hilel is the “one-stop shop” for emergencies. After 20 years in Ukraine, he has become fluent in Russian and has formed relationships with the right contacts in all fields. Even though his priority is his community — and his dedication to them is legendary — somehow he still finds time to offer assistance, at all hours of the day, to the hundreds of Yidden who visit Ukraine in any given week. Be it medical emergencies, robberies or simply lost luggage, Reb Hilel stands at the ready round the clock and reminds us that wherever a Yid finds himself in the world, he is never truly alone.

Yocheved never cries. Well, she never did before, anyway, until that day, the fourth night of Chanukah, while we were both preparing our identical recipes of potato kugel for Shabbos and trying to catch up on each other’s lives over the phone. 138 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 25, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

“What’s the matter?” I asked, hoping I was sounding as alarmed as I felt, even as I frantically continued to scoop a quarter of the mixture to be used as latkes that I would serve after that night’s lighting. It was getting late. Meir would be home with the kids soon, and I still had an endless to-do list to check off before I could enjoy my half hour off after lighting. It was a baby who had made her cry. A sick baby, that is, left alone in the hospital because his parents could not raise him. He had Down syndrome, and a host of other issues that had already put him under a surgeon’s knife twice in the six weeks he’d known the world. When Yocheved came to volunteer at his side in the hospital, he was “away, in surgery, coming back soon.” It sounded just as awful as the tone of the nurse throwing these words behind her back. “Oh no! I’ll take him!” I said spontaneously. Or stupidly. Tamar was nearly eighteen months old. Theoretically, she could have had a baby brother. And anyway, bassinets and stretchies and sterilized baby bottles were so dreamy. I couldn’t wait. “You’re crazy,” Yocheved said. But she stopped crying. Four days later, we were ready. Ready? Who am I kidding? We weren’t breathing anymore; it had all taken so long to arrange. Four days. The kids were ecstatic. I was moving the baby swing

to a better spot for the fourth time. Meir was giving me worried looks, which we all ignored. We were getting a new baby… just like that! At ten o’clock, the baby’s grandmother called. Yes, they had been discharged from the hospital, but there were still some supplies she was waiting for.

Oh. I took a deep breath. Okay. We’ll figure it out. I hoped. And finally, he came. Shimmy was everything I imagined him to be and more. Utterly delicious, a puff of blonde hair crowning a pale face, tiny eyes screwed shut and the reddest mouth I’ve ever seen. And two bags taped tightly to his stomach. And an insane fear of human touch. Poor baby. But it was okay. It took some time — and some, er, unpleasant plastic explosions — but I learned to change those bags, tape them tightly so that they wouldn’t leak, find the right adhesives and creams that would soothe his incredibly sensitive skin, and even find a babysitter who agreed to babysit him, as long as I came twice a day to change his bags. The real learning curve was in a different realm altogether. I had to figure out — with no outward signs to guide me — when Shimmy was sick and needed urgent medical intervention. He wouldn’t look sick. He wouldn’t act sick. But something would start feeling funny to me, and I learned to trust my instincts and rush to the doctor with him immediately. Those instincts never failed, even if I wasn’t really Shimmy’s mother, and Shimmy landed in the hospital again and again and again, each time brushing so close to the unthinkable that my speed getting to the emergency room was growing faster and faster each time. Our bedroom began to look like a mini ICU, but strangely, it made me feel better. Maybe seeing Shimmy hooked up to all those tubes and trying to sleep through the noise of the oxygen concentrator and endless warning beeps of his pulse-ox were not quite normal, but at least it was no longer only up to my instincts to figure out when something was wrong. An oxygen level of fifty-five can be enlightening that way. And then, just when we thought life was settling down to some kind of new normal, something else happened. Naftali’s cardiologist deviated from his usual mantra. Naftali is my oldest child, then five years old. A vivacious, adorable kid with Williams syndrome. So yeah, somewhere in the backs of our minds we knew he was born with a heart murmur — but then, so is a large chunk of the population. We never gave it another thought, other than trying to be responsible and actu-

“You know you can’t keep Shimmy anymore,” she said, and the world stopped breathing for the second time that day. “Supplies?” I echoed. What kind of supplies would he need that we didn’t have? I had been setting up for four days! Well, minus Shabbos — and Motzei Shabbos, which we had spent at the rav’s getting hadrachah. “Oh, yes…” She sounded hesitant. “You do know about his colostomy, yes?” Er, no. What was that? “And… his vesicostomy? Yes?” What was she talking about? “I have no clue,” I admitted. “What are they?” Whatever they were, they didn’t sound fun. “I’m not really sure,” the grandmother said, her voice slowing down further. I could hear the fear through the wires, but no, I was not about to regret taking him in. But what were those stuff? “It’s like a hole in his stomach — well, two, actually. He has these bags attached to them. Instead of diapers.”

ally remembering to take him for his annual checkup. It was during one such routine visit that we learned that Naftali’s heart murmur was no longer just murmuring. In fact, it was screaming, loudly, that he needed surgery. Immediately. No mother told that her child will need to undergo open-heart surgery remains unshaken by the news. But in Naftali’s case, the news was especially devastating. See, kids with Williams syndrome have a unique problem with anesthesia. No one quite knows why, but there have been many instances in which people with Williams suddenly and inexplicably died after receiving anesthesia, so we mothers of these adorable little people are very, very careful about their dentist appointments so that we never reach such a situation. When Naftali was three, he was actually stitched up in the hospital without any form of anesthesia — not even local. I nearly needed resuscitation afterward. And now… open heart surgery? How? That was even supposing we found a surgeon who actually was familiar enough with Williams syndrome and its unique implications to perform the delicate surgery… The one thing I didn’t think of as I wheeled an exhausted Naftali out of the doctor’s office was Shimmy. But not for long. Niva the social worker did all of the thinking for me, in about three split seconds. “You know you can’t keep Shimmy anymore,” she said, and the world stopped breathing for the second time that day. “What do you mean?!” I asked, incredulous. “Shimmy is our baby!” “So that’s the thing,” she said. “He’s not. And you can’t legally keep fostering him if you have a sick child.” She was right. Even I knew that. But that didn’t make the world any more bearable at that moment. Nor was the world much more bearable over the following few months, as we searched for the best surgeon for the job (thank you, Dr. Del-Nido and Dr. Smoot!), decided where to perform the surgery, battled with insurance, took care of travel arrangements, and all the other minor details that saving a child’s life entails. And said goodbye to Shimmy. You will allow me not to relive that, right?

In a way, it was a bracha that we were so busy and overwhelmed. It gave us so little time to think, and to mourn, that it wasn’t until Naftali was past the surgery and recovering in Boston Children’s Hospital that we could finally breathe. And even though the baby swing still swaying emptily in the living room

The surgery failed. And now there was nothing left to do. was an excruciating first sight upon our return home, we could nevertheless look back with awed gratitude that at the very least, we were all alive and well, and that the frightening surgery was behind us. Not that it was easy. The recuperation was harrowing, and Naftali’s Williams syndrome meant that he had to undergo some painful procedures — such as pulling the chest tube out — without any form of anesthesia. But we did it, and it was all over. Finally. Or so we thought. Then Naftali became sick again. This time, the doctors looked grim. There was very little they could do to help him now. The area around his heart had become infected, and another emergency surgery, the doctors said, would give him a slight chance of recovery. Except it didn’t. The surgery failed. And now there was nothing left to do. Naftali’s heart would not be able to handle another surgery, and the cavity around his heart was stuffed with fluids that were about

144 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 25, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

to harden at any moment. And all we could do was watch, helpless, and wait. The ward was a busy, noisy place, but around our room, the doctors walked silently, somberly. Naftali looked okay, but we all knew it was a matter of time. When the time came, perhaps we would try another last-ditch surgery. But for now, we waited. And then it happened. Naftali was lying on his back, eyes glued to Uncle Moishy dancing over our heads as the technician performed the daily echocardiogram. I felt my eyes begin to close with exhaustion when a sudden flurry of activity alerted me that something was wrong. Without a word, the technician flew out of the room, returning moments later with the two main cardiologists treating Naftali. Bending gravely over the screen, each, in turn, grabbed the probe and pushed it into Naftali’s chest. “What’s going on?” I stammered, my fingers already groping for the numbers to call Meir. Was this it? Finally, one of the cardiologists turned to me. I had never before thought eyes could actually glow. “The fluids are gone,” he said. “Gone! Do you understand what this means?!” “Gone?” I stammered, just as Meir burst into the room. “Where did they go?” The doctor grew serious. “We don’t know. It makes no sense. This is a closed cavity — there isn’t any place for the fluids to go. But —” he stabbed at the screen “ — you can’t argue with facts. There are no longer any fluids around Naftali’s heart.” He looked at us again, his eyes still bright. “It’s a medical miracle, that’s what it is. We’ll check again tomorrow, just because, but… then you can go home.” Above our heads, Uncle Moishy continued to proclaim that Hashem is here, Hashem is there, Hashem is truly everywhere. Meir and I looked at each other, and then at Naftali. We had no words. And words escaped us yet again a day later, as we prepared to take Naftali home, and a crazy thought propelled me to check the calendar. It was the fourth night of Chanukah. The very same day that we had taken Shimmy in one year before. Ve’al nisecha shebechol yom imanu. Chanukah is perfectly timeless. Everything about Chanukah is so new — and so old. Everything is so familiar — yet so excitingly fresh all at once. The walls are plastered in Chanukah crafts. The tantalizing aroma of fresh latkes fills the room. The table is set in bright Chanukah hues, scattered with dreidels, gifts, gelt — and of course, in the center of it all: Zeida’s menorah. It’s Chanukah, when old and new complement each other in a seamlessly timeless blend. The ageold tunes, the fresh excitement, the familiarity and the newness seem to merge with each other amid a whiff of burning oil. Chanukah has arrived. Finally, it’s time. My little girls stand close, their exuberant giggles resonating through the room. My husband winks at his young audience as he tweaks the wick one last time. That single, lone, strikingly beautiful first wick. “Are we all ready?” “Yes, yes, yes!” the girls cry. With a nod, my husband begins the all-familiar melody: “Baruch atah…” He’s hardly even started, and the very tune has me caught up in a whirlwind of emotions. He hasn’t even reached those words, and already I’m caught up in a whirlwind of emotions. She’asah nissim... He Who has performed miracles. Countless, countless miracles. Miracles that we can point to, and miracles that we are oblivious to. Sometimes we know we were spared, but often we are simply unaware… And with each miracle, we are reminded yet again that our Father, in His infinite love, is personally running our lives. La’avoseinu… I think of the generations before me, of my grandparents and great-grandparents standing in their simple homes of bygone times as these sacred words were sung out loud. These words are reverberating through the ages. Bayamim haheim… Generations of miracles have come and gone. Through the hardships of our galus, our Father’s miracles have never ceased. And finally, bazman hazeh… I am completely overcome. Where should I start? Maybe with that car crash while I was still in school, when the thoughts of my beautiful family were but a distant dream. In just moments, the car careened across two lanes, hit the barrier, spun around and landed on the shoulder of the oncoming traffic. The car, sud-

148 / THE MONSEY VIEW

denly aflame, sat on the side of the highway. The driver of the car was unconscious, and I emerged with nary a scratch to show. I shudder as I recall standing on the side of the road, waving desperately for help, pellets of rain pouring down in the dead of the night and the future, oh, so unknown… And now, what remains of this memory is only the seudas hoda’ah that we all celebrate. She’asah nissim... Suddenly another memory comes to mind — a memory of lying in the hospital, hours turning into days. It hadn’t quite been in the plan to be hospitalized for almost a week when a common cold went bad, and then worse. With just 48 hours until Chanukah — my first Chanukah as a mother, our first Chanukah as a family — would this be my fate? Nurses shuffled about, machines hummed around me, my arms were bruised from the countless pricks, and my head was too heavy to lift. But then — a miracle: The medication kicked in! The doctor nodded, finally looking hopeful. “If you continue to recover at this pace, you can be discharged tomorrow.” Oh, the joy! The pure joy to be going home! To finally hold my ten-week-old infant and hug her tight as I watch my husband prepare his licht for that first She’asah nissim. But wait! I berate myself. Because there is a greater miracle I am missing. The greatest miracle yet is one that is right before me, right now, right in this room: I am standing with my family, in my home, together. Could I have ever dreamed of such chesed, of such Fatherly love? Perhaps it has taken some earth-shattering moments to appreciate the beauty of routine. The gracious, beautiful, undeserving gift of routine. It is humbling. Perhaps those moments have taught me more than I think. Bazman hazeh — I was a recipient of miracles, and right this very moment, I continue to be.

Spin Your Stakes Here’s a dreidel twist with an element of surprise; your fortune can change in an instant! Not recommended for very young children. Set up a typical dreidel game. Each player should begin with four playing chips (coins, candies, papers, etc.). Now here’s the twist: Instead of setting up a pile in the center, players will draw wins from each other’s piles.

A Colorful Spin Grab some crayons and dreidels, and get ready for a calm and artsy dreidel game that’s great for even very young players! Cut out the dreidel game board. Make some copies, if you can, and distribute a board and a crayon to each player. Take turns spinning the dreidel, and referring to the key below, color in the corresponding number of spaces. Race to see who will reach the end first!

Dreidel Dress-Up Prepare piles of clothing and accessories that start with the letters of the dreidel. (See ideas below, and add your own!) Each player spins the dreidel and selects an article of clothing to wear from the pile corresponding with the letter they land. Soon, you’ll have some laughing kids, especially if there’s a mirror in the room!

Paint Party Prepare small bowls of washable paints. Dip the tip of a dreidel in the paint, and spin it on a blank sheet of paper. Swish! Look at the swirly designs it creates!

Complete Your Menorah Each player receives a blank white paper and draws a basic menorah shape, without any candles or flames. (This can be prepared in advance, especially if there will be young players.) Sit in a circle or around a table. In the center, place bowls filled with sour sticks, licorice or other goodies in the shape of a candle or flame. Take turns spinning the dreidel. If you get a gimmel, you can put two “candles” on your paper menorah. For a hei, take one; for a nun, take none; and for a shin, you must put one back in the center. See who fills up their menorah first!

Deliciously Designed Dreidels “I have a yummy dreidel, I made it out of…” What will you top your top with? Bake or buy dreidel-shaped cookies. Mix together the icing ingredients in a bowl and place it in the center of the table. (For a large crowd, you may want to put out a few small bowls of icing.) Prepare four plates of toppings, such as chocolate chips, chocolate lentils, sprinkles and nuts. Decide which letter of the dreidel each topping plate corresponds to. (You may want to stick in a toothpick into each bowl with a little sign with that letter.) Each participant spins the dreidel and gets to put some of the corresponding topping on their cookie. Dab a bit of icing on the cookie to help the toppings stick. After a few rounds, the dreidels will be deliciously decorated! More Options: You can also decorate a cupcake, cheesecake (slices or mini individual cakes), chunk of brownie bar, etc. Another option is to create individual mini salad bowls by starting off each player with a plate of lettuce and using four plates of different salad toppings.

All Set! Here’s a two-part game that gives creative kids a chance to draw pictures and then play with their creations. Choose one of the two versions of the game to suit your age group.

Part 1: Design Choose four Chanukah-themed pictures. (Think: dreidel, candle, menorah, frying pan, etc.) Hand out small squares of paper and pencils or crayons. Players should draw one picture on each square. You will need quite a number of each picture.

Part 2: Play Sort the picture cards, and place them in four piles in the center, face up. Designate each pile for a different letter on the dreidel. For example, the dreidels for gimmel, the candles for nun, and so on. With each spin, the player picks a card that corresponds to the letter they land. The game is over once one pile is finished. Each player counts how many full sets of four pictures they have, and the player with the most sets wins! Tip: To get started with this game faster, you can choose to prepare the picture cards in advance. Or use other playing chips in sets of four, such as jellies in four colors, papers in four colors, four types of candy, etc. Advanced Version: Up the ante in this timed version, in which the dreidel acts as the timer! Instead of dividing the pictures into separate piles, scatter them randomly on the table, face down. Take turns spinning the dreidel. Each player has a chance to pick one picture they need as long as the dreidel spun by the next player is still rotating. Pick and pick, replacing each picture you don’t need face down on the table. If the dreidel falls before you find your picture, your turn is lost. The player with the most sets wins!

Actively Involved Twist and spin into motion like a little dreidel as you enjoy this action-packed game! Prepare cards that list various actions like: jump, hop, clap, do jumping jacks, etc. You can throw in some more complex actions such as: Tap each player on the shoulder; run to the window and back; spin like a dreidel, etc. Each card should have just one action written on it, and the action should be possible to be performed repetitively. Place the cards in a pile, face down. Players take turns spinning the dreidel. When a player lands a gimmel, they pick a card, follow the instructions on it, and then repeat the action until the next player lands a gimmel. (Only one person should be doing the action in the center at a time.)

A Gimmel Dreidel?

What’s Your Dreidel Made Of? Today, you can find dreidels made of a myriad of materials, including wood, metal, crystal, paper, plastic and silver, to name but a few. The Bnei Yissaschar, however, attributed deep reasons for selecting specifically a dreidel made of wood. --------•--------

Lead dreidel from Eastern Europe, late 19th century. Valued at $750.

The Judaica scene is full of dreidels with artistic designs, motifs and carvings in a limitless array of styles. And for children, there are crayon dreidels, dreidels with markers at the tips, singing and flashing dreidels, chocolate dreidels, and plastic versions filled with candy that keep them entertained throughout Chanukah and beyond. --------•-------In the days before plastic, lead was probably the most common material used to create dreidels. Molten lead was poured into a mold, and when removed about fifteen seconds later, it maintained a beautiful dreidel shape. --------•--------

A dreidel with an elephant design by Eran Grebler.

Many antique collectors have iron dreidels from the nineteenth century and the pre– World War II era.

Spin this carousel dreidel by the handle! A ceramic work of art by Eran Grebler.

164 / THE MONSEY VIEW

It might not be your imagination that your dreidel keeps falling on the same letter! Most dreidels have a part line going through the tip of the dreidel. A part line occurs where the two sides of the casting molds come together, and a bit of the material oozes out. In cheap production, it simply isn’t worth removing the part lines, which is why you’ll find the line on most plastic dreidels. When creating dreidels from higher-quality materials — such as silver — on the other hand, the part line will be buffed away, making for a more balanced top.

One-Stop Dreidel Shop! The Dreidel House in Tel Aviv boasts more than 800 different spinning tops. Every piece is a work of art and as unconventional as they come. Inspired by various themes and shapes such as helicopters and animals, each one is unique. The ceramicist who designs them, Eran Grebler, never bores of coming up with new styles, and visitors don’t get bored from checking out his distinct collection.

Oh, Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel… In 1927, the English version of I Have a Little Dreidel was written by Samuel S. Grossman and composed by Samuel E. Goldfarb. It became popular in the 1950s. It was a takeoff of the Yiddish version of the song, Ich Bin ah Kleiner Dreidel…, that predated it.

Most Valuable A Spin on Words

Created for Chabad of South Palm Beach by Pedro Maldonado, the world’s most valuable dreidel has an estimated worth of $14,000. It was designed using precious metals and stones donated by the community, and the tip it spins on is a genuine diamond.

The Yiddish word “dreidel” originates from the German/Yiddish verb “dreyen.”

No less than 1,369 dreidels were spinning at once in an attempt to smash world records; achieved by students in a yeshivah in New Jersey.

Reb Dovid Moshe of Chortkov, the oldest son of Reb Yisroel of Ruzhin, once handed his son a dreidel and instructed, “Drei, drei, un vest zich arois dreyen fun alle tzaros – Spin, spin, and you’ll spin your way out of all problems!”

Most at Once

Longest Spin

--------•--------

In 2006, a Brooklyn girl kept a wooden top spinning for 7 hours, 1 minute and 14 seconds before it landed its spot after the longest spin in history.

Largest Dreidel At 22 feet tall, this dreidel, built by West Island Hillel, actually spins!

Largest Collection Numbering at 3,500 and counting, the dreidel collection of Avraham Burg of Eretz Yisroel is said to be the largest personal collection of its kind.

A Deeper Twist The four sides of the dreidel represent the four kingdoms who ruled over Klal Yisroel. As each empire took its turn at attacking us, we continued spinning from Above, triumphing time and again. --------•-------It is impossible for a dreidel to remain standing on its single foot, and the only way we Yidden have prevailed throughout these years of galus is by spinning in perpetual motion, constantly evading and outliving the enemy despite not having our own solid soil to stand on. --------•-------The single central point that the dreidel spins on represents the achdus of Klal Yisroel, in spite of the enemies surrounding us on all four sides. --------•-------The numerical value of nun, gimmel, hei and shin is the same as Moshiach — 358. Ultimately, the game will end with the coming of Moshiach, speedily in our days.
