Happy & Healthy Ever After More Energy Anyone? More Mental Clarity? More Productivity? Good eating habits will give you all of the above. However, the fear of commitment, feeling limited, compromising taste and not having the pizza shop to fall back on, makes you reluctant to forge ahead and explore what eating clean can do. Nevertheless, recurring ear infections, skin rashes, and low energy levels are too common, and pink medicine is taking a too prominent place in your fridge. And your pediatrician is saying antibiotics isn’t helping anymore... Mrs. Diamond, a young mother was leading a "normal" lifestyle. She liked the balance of nutritious meals and sweet treats when needed. She was aware that keeping back nosh from kids can result in having them feel deprived and preferred to deal with it in what she considered a happy medium approach. Except that it wasn’t really working. She felt depleted most of the time and her children’s little bodies were rebelling in different ways. Being that she was a thinking person she wasn’t going to sit by idly and allow the chain to spiral out of control. She truly wanted to enhance the well-being of herself and that of her family. She started off by asking family and friends, and educating herself on health and nutrition, which took her on a journey to explore a new world that seemed to offer a wholesome and true path to health. Yet, it did seem daunting and rather overwhelming. Mrs. Diamond decided to approach her new lifestyle with curiosity instead of dread. She was truly determined to bring the change into her home in a pleasing way. As one used to being praised for her gourmet cooking and creative display of food, she incorporated all those skills into her new venture, which equaled more wholesome and vibrant ingredients, and less chemicals and processed foods. As time went by, she kept experimenting. Old favorites were re-invented with newer surprisingly more palatable versions of their familiar comfort foods. Her new commitment
was steadily paying dividends since the overall health of her family was improving immensely. Vitality was no longer a wistful dream. Dragging her feet out of bed with fatigue was a relic of the past... Her kids (and their friends) were happily munching on super-foods instead of spending sick days curled up in bed. Over time and lots of trial and error, Mrs. Diamond’s family enjoyed the ease and comfort of having a healthier lifestyle smoothly incorporated into their daily lives. Being a foodie at heart, she was affiliated with the Ladies Auxiliary of The Nitra Cookbook. They therefore had the immense pleasure of collaborating and together they pooled their ideas, resources, and talent that they are so famous for. Thus, Healthy Ever After was created! Healthy Ever After is a veritable feast for the eyes with over 450 tried and true recipes and will lead you on your individual journey. Perfect for the beginner that needs hand-holding and guidance, for someone in the “middle of the road”, as well as for those advanced on the healthful cooking arena, or for those on a specific diet for unique circumstances. The Nitra Ladies Auxiliary fine-tuned nearly endless options to cater to your individual needs. In this cookbook, you will find a clear and userfriendly guide for an easy and smooth transition, and answers to the many nutrition questions people often wonder about. For instance, how to substitute ingredients to more wholesome options without compromising taste or texture. There is also an incredible amount of information condensed in the most readable fashion, educating you on which foods will give you the vital vitamins the body relies on, on a daily basis. You will feel grateful to know how you can best grease the wheels of your body by keeping it well stocked instead of depleted. In this book you will be encouraged to learn, experiment, and broaden your food horizons without fear. We hope you’ll enjoy the variety, flavor, good health and the fantastic feeling of knowing that you and your family are benefiting in the most optimal way.

(Re: Taste the Rainbow, Issue 225) How validating it was to read your fascinating article on synesthesia! As a synesthete of the grapheme-color type, I’ve been at the receiving end of many an odd look, compassionate nod and sympathetic murmur: “Must be the colors of your first ABC/numbers chart in school!” Well, skeptics, synesthesia’s real and makes life exciting. It adds verve and fun to boring alphabets and numbers, and even dribbles around to color entire names as well! So if you chance upon someone telling you with conviction that Leah is green, you’d better believe it. Keep those amazing articles coming! C.N.G.

(Re: All Eyes on Vision, Issue 225) Thank you for your edition on the topic of vision. It was really eyeopening and informative. I would like to reach out to your readers about an eye-related issue that wasn’t addressed within the magazine. I write in the hope of soliciting the advice of anyone who may have had any positive experience with correcting bilateral ptosis (where both eyelids are drooping and partially blocking vision) in children. Thank you so much! L.N.

Thank you for your wonderful magazine that we enjoy every week! In response to last week’s issue on the topic of vision, I would like to reach out to the public for information on ptosis (droopy eyelid). Baruch Hashem, in our particular case, it is only a cosmetic issue that doesn’t affect our child’s vision. We have already tried surgery, but it was unfortunately not successful. If you have any experience or knowledge in the field, I would appreciate if you can contact me through The Monsey View. A Reader
OFFERING INSIGHT (Re: All Eyes on Vision, Issue 225) Thank you so much for your informative issue last week. Our family has dealt with a different kind of vision problem, not one discussed in your paper, and I’m writing this letter in case this information can be of use to any of your readers. One of my children was born with coloboma, the medical term for a hole in one of the structures of the eye that typically presents as a misshapen pupil. The pupil will usually look larger than normal and have an atypical shape. My child’s pupils are teardrop-shaped, and I’ve had people tell me that it looks like the child has Swarovski eyes! B’chasdei Hashem, both pupils have exactly the same form of coloboma, which is very rare and means that they both look alike. More importantly, his vision is almost perfect, and he only suffers from light sensitivity since the foremost layer of the eye is affected. I can be contacted through The Monsey View for more information. A Mother
MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE (Re: Out of Focus, Issue 225) I read your article detailing different focusing issues experienced by individuals with interest. I, too, have struggled with vision, despite the several doctors and prescriptions I’ve tried. Often, when a child complains of unclear vision, the obvious thing to do is to try a prescription with a higher number, and that was the case with me. Despite my numbers going up, I still was not seeing clearly, until one astute doctor did the opposite: He gave me a much lower prescription (at that point

I was already using prisms). And although there were still a few unresolved issues, my vision was finally functional. D.N.
RE: A HEARTWARMING SEARCH (Inbox, Issue 225) When I read L.K.’s letter in the inbox, two things struck me, which I’d like to bring awareness to. First, I found it surprising that someone would pull Chaverim members away from their family on Erev Sukkos for something that was not an emergency. Are we perhaps taking advantage of the kindheartedness of Chaverim volunteers? Chaverim is a special organization that never says no. Let’s use them responsibly. And, of course, a big thank you for all they do! The second issue was giving a kallah diamond earrings as a Sukkos present. Isn’t it time to do away with all the pre-chasunah gifts to save families thousands of dollars? If you want to gift your kallah, why not wait until after the chasunah, when you know your child’s spouse and it would actually mean something and help build your relationship? I did not expect anything from my husband’s parents, and they did not give me any pre-chasunah gifts, and it did not adversely affect our relationship in any way. It can be done. Sincerely, Bracha K.
A FAMILY ACTIVITY (Re: Coloring Pages) Thank you for your adorable coloring pages. What a fun activity it was! The entire family participated, from our twelfth grader to our threeyear-old. Creative Family
AVRAHAM AVINU’S FAMILY TREE (Re: What’s His Name, Issue 221) Upon seeing the letter last week discussing some issues with the article on names, I’d like to mention the name very obviously repeated in Sefer Bereishis. Terech’s father (and Avraham Avinu’s grandfather) was named Nachor (Bereishis 11:22). And just four pesukim later (Bereishis 11:26), we see that Terech’s son (Avraham Avinu’s brother) was named Nachor too. Today, when there are people who are nervous to do shidduchim with close family, it is also interesting to note the close-knit marriages in the bnei hamisphacha of Avraham Avinu. In fact, the children Yaakov Avinu had with Leah and Rochel (Reuven, Shimon, Levi, Yehudah, Yisaschar, Zevulun, Yosef and Binyamin) were the grandchildren of

Terech six times over! Avraham Avinu was the son of Terech (1); Avraham Avinu was the son-in-law of his brother Haran, who was also a son of Terech (2); Yitzchok was the son-in-law of Nachor, who was also the son-in-law of Haran and a son of Terech (3 and 4); Rivkah was the daughter of Basuel, who was the son of Nachor ben Terech (5); and Leah and Rochel were the daughters of Lavan, who was the son of Basuel and thus also a grandson of Terech (6). First, thanks for your well-coordinated and perfectly balanced magazine. The articles are unique and informative — and heimish, too! I’d appreciate if you’d allow me to share the following: We needed to sell our house immediately for several reasons. Now, this was a tall order and very unlikely to come to pass. We figured that we’d cash in on the opportunity and stop by the Ribnitzer. My husband and I completed Tehillim, and I secretly promised to publicize “my miracle” if there’s… well, something to publicize in up to a week. Through a series of hashgacha pratis, miraculously, we had a buyer with a signed binder on the sixth day! I thank Hashem for His miracles, and I thank Him for sending us tzaddikim who help our prayers reach Him even after their demise. S.K.

This past Sunday, my husband came home in the evening feeling feverish, achy and very unwell. It was late at night that he decided to head over to Medrite. Dr. Eliezer Gurkov, PA, was on call and prescribed the medication he needed. Since it was close to midnight, getting the meds delivered was no longer an option, and my husband was too dizzy to drive to a pharmacy that was still open. Dr. Eliezer Gurkov instantly offered to drive to a pharmacy in Suffern after his shift would be over at 12:00 a.m., and then drive to our house in Chestnut Ridge to deliver it before heading all the way back to Pomona. And that’s exactly what he did. At 1:05 a.m., the medication was dropped off at our house by this kindhearted doctor. We were truly moved! Mi k’amcha Yisroel! A Grateful and Truly Amazed Patient

Parshas Vayeitzei By: Malka Schneps
In Parshas Vayeitzei, Yaakov Avinu had been traveling from Be’er Sheva toward Charan when he stopped to sleep for the night. As Yaakov slept, he dreamed about a ladder that stretched from the ground to Shamayim, and malachim were ascending and descending the ladder. Hashem stood over Yaakov and declared, “I am Hashem, the G-d of Avraham your father, and the G-d of Yitzchok; the land upon which you are lying I will give to you and to your seed. And your seed shall be as the dust of the Earth, and you shall spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south; and through you shall all the families of the Earth be blessed, and through your seed. And behold, I am with you, and I will guard you wherever you go, and I will return you to this land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.” (Bereishis 28:13-15) Yaakov awoke from his sleep, and he declared, “Indeed, Hashem is in this place, and I did not know it.” Rashi explains this declaration to mean that Yaakov would not have slept in that place if he had known that the Shechinah was there. When Yaakov Avinu slept, he received nevuah and Hashem’s promise. Had Yaakov not slept there, perhaps he would not have received these gifts. The Sfas Emes explains that when Yaakov Avinu stated that he would not have slept in that place, it means that he would have been willing to sacrifice the nevuah and Hashem’s promise rather than sleep in a place that holy. The Sfas Emes cites the Zohar Hakadosh on the words “va’ani lo yadati — and I did not know.” The Zohar explains that “knowing” in Tanach means connecting. When Yaakov berated himself for not “knowing,” he was really berating himself for not being spiritually connected enough to realize that the Shechinah was there. Yaakov would have preferred to be connected to Hashem rather then to receive nevuah and Hashem’s promise. The Brisker Rav likewise points out that when Yaakov Avinu declared that he would not have slept there, he was also willing to forego the nevuah and Hashem’s promise, and that by declaring that he would not have slept in that place, Yaakov was attesting to the fact that
80 / THE MONSEY VIEW
he would have been willing to sacrifice these gifts rather than do something he felt was not right. The Brisker Rav points out that we should not make cheshbonos when it comes to our avodas Hashem. We should always do what is right, regardless of the sacrifices involved. Life can be confusing, and it can be tempting to look for signs to guide us. Seeing that something good came from sleeping there might have led Yaakov to conclude that he had done the right thing by doing so. However, Yaakov analyzed the situation and came to the opposite conclusion. Whether or not an action was correct on our part is not determined by any benefits that we may have acquired as a result of that action — even to the point of those benefits involving nevuah and a direct promise from Hashem. All the more so should we not look to any material gains in our lives as being signs of having taken a correct course of action. The Torah lays out the right path for us to follow. The shoresh of the word halacha is hey-lamed-chof, which means to walk. The word halacha literally means “path” of “the way one walks.” We do not need simanim to “prove” that an action is correct when we have halacha. If a person is uncertain as to which path to follow, he should ask a rav rather than conclude based on circumstances in life that a decision is or is not correct. The Torah lights the path for us to follow through life, and da’as Torah guides us along the way. Moreover, looking for external clues as to whether or not our actions are correct can be misleading. In this example, it was Yaakov Avinu who did not rely on clear gifts from Hashem to “prove” his action was correct. At the opposite extreme, l’havdil, we know that it says that resha’im often live easy lives when, in fact, Hashem is giving them all of their reward in this world and reserving their punishment for the next world. Their easy lives are certainly not a sign that they are living life the right way. May we learn from the Avos to always walk in the ways of Torah, and when we encounter situations of doubt, to seek out da’as Torah to shine a light on the correct path.

Local Law Enforcement to Receive Hate Crimes Training Statewide Responding to the disturbing increase of hate crimes in New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation last week to establish a new training program that will be implemented by local law enforcement so they can recognize and prevent further incidents of bias crimes. The legislation was sponsored by Senator Todd Kaminsky and Assemblywoman Nily Rozic and will have the Municipal Police Training Council working closely with the state’s Division of Human Rights and Hate Crimes Task Force. Together, the agencies will develop and maintain policies to ensure that local law enforcement is properly prepared to both recognize and deal with bias incidents. Hate crimes, particularly anti-Semitic ones, have been on the rise in New York City. “With the steady surge of hate crimes across New York, there is little room for complacency,” said Rozic. “This new law will equip local law enforcement with the proper tools to identify, report and respond to these crimes that continue to divide and instill widespread fear.” “Anti-Semitism, hate and intolerance have no place in our state and nation,” added Kaminsky. Cuomo said that the legislation would make New York a stronger and more inclusive place. “We will continue taking aggressive measures to stamp out hate whenever and wherever it rears its ugly head,” said Cuomo.
A.C. Moore the Latest Chain to Call It Quits It had been a popular fixture on the local landscape, stocked with arts and crafts supplies, picture frames, paints, jewelry findings and projects for kids and adults, but A.C. Moore will be closing all of its 145 locations from Maine to Florida. The announcement was made by A.C. Moore’s chief executive officer, Anthony Piperno, on November 25. Piperno said that after 30 years of serving the craft community, A.C. Moore found that, like other retailers, it was having trouble competing in today’s retail climate. Details on upcoming closings will

emerge in the upcoming weeks, though Piperno advised that the store’s website would no longer be accepting orders. Michaels, another chain offering similar products, will be taking over 40 A.C. Moore stores in 2020, making the company the largest arts and crafts retailer in North America. Michaels already has a location in the Spring Valley Marketplace, and the fate of the A.C. Moore in Nanuet, located two miles away, is unclear at this time. Nearly 9,100 retail stores have closed down in 2019, with Charming Charlie, Gymboree, Dressbarn and Payless ShoeSource also shutting down completely. Others that have announced partial closures affecting some of their stores include Barneys, Bath & Body Works, Bed Bath & Beyond, CVS, Family Dollar, Gap, GNC, J.C. Penney, Kmart, Lowes, Forever 21, GNC, Macy’s, Party City, Pier 1 Imports and Sears.
Good Sam Ribbon-Cuttings Bring Advanced Health Care Options to Monsey Area It has been a busy few weeks at Good Sam, with the Suffern hospital opening two new specialty centers. With the opening of its Esophageal and Reflux Center, Good Sam will be the only hospital in Rockland and Orange counties to have a dedicated facility specializing in conditions ranging from gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD, to esophageal cancer. The center will include a multidisciplinary team of board-certified specialists, including thoracic surgeons, gastroenterologists, pathologists and radiologists, who will be able to collaborate on individual treatment plans for patients. The hospital’s recently opened bariatric surgery center will expand and modernize the hospital’s program for weight loss surgery, offering advanced surgical options for severely obese patients, including gastric sleeves and bands, among others, in its 6,000-square-foot facility. “This new, specialized center, in addition to our uniquely trained and dedicated staff, enables us to deliver a post-operative experience in a healing environment with specific focus on patient safety,” said Ramon Rivera, Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at Good Sam Hospital. “This is an essential step in our patients’ journey to a healthier and happier life after surgery.”

Recap: Binyamin ends up having a bad case of the flu, and he is stuck, sick at home, for the better part of a week. In present-day Bratislava, Joe Ludmir searches for information about his past, but so far he doesn’t find anything. He receives a call from Australia that his partner, Alex Korman, just passed away. Blumi walked into her hotel room and kicked off her shoes. This week had been draining beyond belief. She sank into the rattan chair in the corner and passed a hand over her eyes. When she’d first arrived in Eretz Yisroel, she’d planned to stay at her father’s apartment for the week of shivah, but Gideon claimed that her brothers would not take kindly to the idea. “What will they think, that I’m planning to take over the apartment?” she’d argued. “That I’ll lock the door from the inside? That I won’t let them in? What, exactly?” “I don’t think they’ll suspect that those are our plans, especially since we are not lacking for such an apartment by any stretch, baruch Hashem. But family members never like it when one of them displays an especially strong connection to one of the possessions of the parents who have passed on, and certainly not something the size of an apartment.” He took a deep breath. “Inheritances are always a sensitive subject.” To her relief, he did not mention the
rift with his own brother, Shimon. She had no energy to hear about his complex family entanglements right now, and anyway, it wouldn’t happen to her. She wouldn’t fight with any of her brothers over the yerushah; she’d know how to go about it in a smart way. “Fine,” she’d murmured then, a bit dazed. “So we’ll sleep in a hotel.” She didn’t mention the idea of staying at her father’s apartment again, even when, on the fourth day of shivah, the last visitor didn’t leave until after two in the morning. She and Gideon were almost collapsing with exhaustion, but the warning note in his voice stopped her from suggesting that they sleep there. Gideon had had a bitter experience with regard to inheritances, family relations and brothers, and she didn’t want to step on any toes. She wouldn’t overtly display to her brothers any special connection to her father’s apartment, just like she’d made sure that they hadn’t seen the envelope she’d given to that bachur. She had no idea who, if any of them, even knew about it, though she had a feeling that

her brothers knew something. But whether or not that was the case, it was clear that they would not take kindly to her interest in the yad from the shelf in her father’s top cabinet. But what did they want? Or rather, what would they want if they would know about it? Over the years, her brothers had always been so practical, so lacking emotion for anything nostalgic. Who had always been their father’s listening ear? To whom had he told his stories from the past? And to whom had he said, “You want it? Then it will be yours after my one hundred and twenty”? Only to her. Only her. Her brothers would want to sell the yad; of that she was pretty sure. They had no interest in this kind of thing; at most they’d simply want the monetary value of it. She, however, did not want to sell it to a stranger. She wanted the yad for herself. But if she’d tell her brothers this, she knew that they’d respond by offering to sell it to her. Well, excuse them, but why in the world should she buy something off of her brothers if her father had already promised that it would be hers? “That’s a serious accusation, you know,” Gideon had said when he’d heard her thoughts about her father’s yad, years earlier. “They’re not such greedy men, your brothers.” “I didn’t mean for a moment that they’re greedy,” she’d hastily defended herself. “Just that they need the money more than we do, and this could lead to such a thing happening. But, of course, I know we can’t judge them.” Now, in their hotel room, Gideon looked over at her and said, “They want to meet again this evening.” “This evening? What’s so urgent?” “Well, we’re flying back the day after tomorrow, and there are definitely things we need to discuss with them first, no?” “Fine,” she murmured. “I’m taking a nap now. Let them know it’s fine with me to meet tonight.” But she didn’t fall asleep so fast. The shiny little yad flashed incessantly in her mind. It was a small yad, made of silver, with its fingers appearing darker because they were set with stones. “Fingers of steel,” Gideon had murmured, when he’d first heard her enthusiastic descriptions of it. “What?” “Nothing. It just reminded me of Nevuchadnezzar’s statue, and there’s a difference of opinion about what the toes were made of. Fingers and toes are different, I know, but it’s the same idea…” “What are you saying?” she’d bristled. “Comparing a holy sefer Torah yad to the foot of some statue in the king of Bavel’s dream?!” “First of all, the yad of a sefer Torah doesn’t quite have kedushah. It has the status of a tashmish mitzvah.” “Fine. Then you’re comparing this tashmish mitzvah to a statue?”
“The statue wasn’t an avodah zara,” Gideon enlightened her. Despite his status as a businessman, he had a wealth of Torah knowledge. “You can check what it says in the meforshim. And besides,” he added, “I wasn’t comparing anything to the statue. Your descriptions just made me think of it.” “Fine. But you should know that this yad is not just a simple yad. It’s quite valuable, though I think its primary value is the financial lesson that my father learned from it.” Gideon nodded. He remembered that original conversation well. He already knew the story of the yad that had been offered to his father-in-law as a rare and ancient artifact, which he’d ultimately paid a huge sum of money for. Only a few months later did the fraud become clear. Yes, the yad was worth something because of the stones, but its real value wasn’t even close to a fortieth of what Blumi’s father had paid for it. “Strange that he didn’t think that it’s rare to find a metal-like silver piece inlaid with precious stones,” Gideon had mused thoughtfully at the time. “It should have caught his attention.” “He was young and didn’t understand enough about the subject. That’s why he hardly dealt with precious metals after that,” Blumi had said, and with that, closed the subject. But her father had loved the yad. Oh, it had pained him, to be sure; he felt that the outstretched finger was pointing in his direction. But he wrapped it well and placed it for safekeeping in the highest cabinet in an inner room in the house. Because when everything was said and done, he just could not part with it. Already when she was a girl, Tatty had surreptitiously called Blumi over and showed her his yad. “Oh, wow!” her eight-year-old self had exclaimed over it, with longing in her eyes. “It’s really, really nice, Tatty. Why don’t you put it in the silver closet?” “Mommy doesn’t like it,” he’d
96 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 4, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
replied. “And I don’t like it so much either.” “Why?” “Because it reminds me that we lost a lot of money over it, and we had a hard time afterward for a while.” He gazed at his young daughter, whose eyes had darkened with anxiety, and then lifted her chin with his finger and whispered, “But don’t worry, my dear; it’s all over, baruch Hashem. Now it’s just an unpleasant memory.” ***** It was on Motzei Shabbos, when Binyamin finally felt somewhat better, that the envelope popped into his mind. He had no idea how he had forgotten about it until this minute, but when he remembered,
Why in the world should she buy something off of her brothers if her father had already promised that it would be hers? he knew it would be very hard for him to try to recall where exactly he’d put it for safekeeping. He had gone back to the yeshivah. Right. But what did he do with it there? Vague memories of dizzying exhaustion filled his head, but besides that — nothing. Garnisht. Nil. He had no idea if the envelope was in one of the closets in his room, or in his suitcase, or under his mattress. His parents could not understand why he insisted on returning to yeshivah early on Sunday morning after such a bout with the flu. “Are you sure it’s a good idea?” His mother studied him. “You’re still very pale.” “Why don’t you stay home at least until the evening?” his father suggested. But he explained that he was fine
already, and that, baruch Hashem, he was feeling good, and that it would be a shame to miss even one more day of yeshivah. That was all true. He was fine, he felt better, and indeed, every day he missed was a shame. Baruch Hashem, he was learning well with his chavrusos, except when he was very tired in the mornings. But it was not because of this impressive collection of reasons that Binyamin was in such a hurry to get back to yeshivah. It was the pressure and worry about the envelope that was driving him to go. What was in that envelope? Something valuable? Secret? Mysterious? He didn’t know, but he’d only find out if he went back to yeshivah. After a half hour of searching his room, while his friends were learning in the beis midrash, he sat down on his bed and rubbed his eyes. The envelope wasn’t there. So it had to be at home. During those four days of burning fever and disorientation, he could have stuck it anywhere. Now he just had to hope that he’d put it someplace in his house that wasn’t too accessible to his little siblings, and not where it could inadvertently get tossed into the garbage. He had to return home. Fifteen minutes later, he was pulling the key out of its usual hiding place in the stairwell, and he entered the house. He was pleased that none of his sisters were there; they often had “off” days from school because of a test or some other reason. He searched every corner where the envelope could possibly be: the kitchen, the hallway closet, the dining room… But his search turned up nothing; the envelope was nowhere to be found. He had to ask his mother if she’d seen it, but then he’d have to find the right words to probe without getting her nervous. That was all he needed: that his parents should go into debt now to return the value of something that their son had been negligent in watching… Wait. What was his status, come to think of it? nam, wasn’t he? And who said that the item was even valuable? He had no idea what was in there. He could not remember what Mr. Katz’s daughter had said. In any case, almost a week had passed, and she hadn’t come or sent anyone else to ask for the envelope back. Maybe it wasn’t quite so valuable after all. So why had she wanted it guarded so well? ***** “Binyamin! Welcome back!” Shabsi met him in the hallway. “When did you get back?” “This morning, but not in time for first seder.” “Not like you. Lunch is in fifteen minutes — you couldn’t come into the beis midrash for even a little bit? Nope, not a good answer for a talmid like you.” Binyamin nodded with a smile, studying his friend cautiously. Did Shabsi know anything? Had anyone from the Katz family approached him about the envelope? “And you really don’t look that great, you know.” “Thanks. Yes, I know.” “Tell me, do you want to go to ‘work’ with me again in a half hour?” “In a half hour? No. I told you, I only want nights.” “Oh, right, I forgot. But you should take care of yourself, because you’re literally the color of the wall. I don’t want to have to learn Mishnayos next to you at any time in the near future…” Despite his weakness and dismal mood, Binyamin poked his friend in the ribs with his elbow and grinned. Trump Tussles With the Navy THE PULSE: President Trump ordered Defense Secretary Mark Esper to scuttle a pending Navy investigation into the actions of Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher. Chief Petty Officer Gallagher is at the center of a two-year controversy. He was arrested in September 2018 and accused of killing an ISIS fighter held in military custody and posing for pictures with the corpse while he was on duty in Iraq in 2017. A military jury acquitted Gallagher of the murder charge but found him guilty of posing with the dead body. A Navy review board was scheduled to review the case on December 2 to decide whether Gallagher should be allowed to re-
104 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 4, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
tire from the military as a Navy SEAL and retain his SEAL trident insignia. Trump put an end to the investigation by ordering Defense Secretary Esper to shut down the investigation, thereby enabling Gallagher to keep his insignia. Secretary Esper also announced that he was firing Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer, who had opposed Trump’s involvement in the matter and had attempted to broker an unauthorized back-channel agreement to keep the president out of the review process. Many media outlets reported that members of Gallagher’s platoon in Iraq found his behaviors dangerous and troubling. However, none of these allegations resulted in convictions. Trump has also intervened in cases of other military members who have stood accused or been convicted of war crimes. Trump pardoned Army Special Forces Officer Mathew Golsteyn, Army Lieutenant Clint Lorance, and former Army Lieutenant Mi-
chael Behenna, all of whom were accused or convicted of killing unarmed detainees. Even though Trump intervened over the objections of his appointees and the Navy chain of command, he upped the ante by declaring at a campaign rally in Sunrise, Florida, that he had intervened to stick up for “three great warriors against the deep state.” THE IMPACT: Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer penned a blistering public letter to the president where he wrote that “The rule of law is what sets us apart from our adversaries. Good order and discipline is what has enabled our victory against foreign tyranny time and again. The Constitution and the Uniform Code of Military Justice are the shields that set us apart, and the beacons that protect us all.” He also wrote, “Unfortunately, it has become apparent that in this respect, I no longer share the same understanding with the Commander in Chief who appointed me, in regard to the key principle of good order and discipline. I cannot in good conscience obey an order that I believe violates the sacred oath I took in the presence of my family, my flag, and my faith to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Many veterans groups and former military officials expressed concern that Trump’s actions will inadvertently undermine military discipline and obedience to the rule of law. Paul Rieckhoff, the founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, criticized Trump’s actions and expressed fear that the president's actions will undermine the laws of engagement. Senator Jack Reed, a top Democrat of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said that “It signals to people that they can operate outside the rule of law and the Geneva Convention.” Some retired military officials expressed support for Trump and claimed that military service is stressful and taxing and that it is therefore unfair for the actions of soldiers to be judged by tribunals far from the battlefield. However, it must be noted that most soldiers adhere to high standards of military discipline. It is highly unusual for a president to interfere in a low-level investigation being run by military officials who are tasked with researching the facts, weighing the evidence, and reaching a reasonable conclusion. It is also wrong for him to label such officers as members of a nefarious “deep state.”
Taliban Talks to Resume THE PULSE: On a surprise Thanksgiving Day visit to
American troops in Afghanistan, President Trump announced the resumption of peace talks with the Taliban. Negotiations with the Taliban have been led by Zalmay Khalilzad, the Special U.S. Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation. Negotiations were progressing earlier this year until a Taliban terrorist attack led the United States to terminate talks and cancel a planned September peace
summit at Camp David. NEGOTIATION PROS: President Trump has continu-
ously expressed his belief that America should not be fighting other people’s wars. He has been a strong advocate of bringing U.S. soldiers home, thereby removing them from harm’s way and saving the tremendous sums of money spent on seemingly never-ending deployments. There is a realistic limit of what can be achieved by employing military force. Negotiating with one’s opponents is a necessity for reaching an agreement. Therefore, even though the Taliban represents ideas and elements of Afghan society that are at odds with U.S. ideals and goals for the region, it is in the best interest of the U.S. to reach an agreement and leave Afghanistan. NEGOTIATION CONS: Khalilzad’s negotiations have been criticized by leading Republican senators and by senior members of the Afghan government. They fear that the American negotiators are too eager to cut a deal and will be leaving the Taliban in an unnecessary position of strength. They also fear that there will be no proper mechanism in place to ensure that the Taliban comply with the terms of a deal once the U.S. withdraws. Much American blood has been spilled fighting the Taliban. It is essential that the spilling of their blood not be in vain. Leaving the Taliban in a position of power will likely put at risk the Afghan achievements of the past decade regarding women’s and minority rights. There is also the fear that should the U.S. withdraw, the Taliban will revert to their pre 9/11 ways and constitute a real threat to American national security.
Bloomberg's Possible Path to the Nomination THE PULSE: Michael Bloomberg has announced that
he will forgo the early primary and caucus states of New Hampshire and Iowa and focus his energies on winning the Super Tuesday nominating contests. THE IMPACT: Bloomberg’s strategy remains risky, and
candidates who have tried similar approaches have not been successful. However, Axios’ Mike Allen sees a possible aligning of the political stars that may enable Bloomberg to break through and succeed. Elizabeth Warren has begun to struggle in Iowa. According to recent polling, it is likely that Pete Buttigieg will win Iowa, Elizabeth Warren will win New Hampshire, Joe Biden will win South Carolina, and Bernie Sanders will win Nevada. This state of Democratic chaos with no clear frontrunner may allow Bloomberg to break to the head of the pack with a strong showing in the March 3rd Super Tuesday contests. The first contests are still 60 days away. Much remains to be seen, but the state of the Democratic primary contest is anything but settled.

It was made by the kallah’s mother and was served in abundance all Shabbos long. I was excited to prepare a batch once we got home and give my family a tangible taste of our trip. The maple syrup can be substituted for honey by increasing the honey amount to one cup.
INGREDIENTS ½ cup oil ½ cup maple syrup ½ cup honey ¼ cup sugar 8 cups corn flakes 2 cups slivered almonds 2 cups sunflower seeds 1 cup pumpkin seeds ½ cup sesame seeds 2 cups craisins
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Combine first four ingredients in one lined roaster pan, and bake for 5 minutes until dissolved. 2. Add remaining ingredients except for craisins, and mix well until all dry ingredients are evenly coated. 3. Divide mixture between two roaster pans. Bake for 5 minutes. Add craisins mix well. Bake for an an additional 2 to 4 minutes.

Spicy Nut Mix INGREDIENTS 1 cup roasted, salted cashews 1 cup roasted, salted almonds ½ cup shelled pistachios 2 tsp. soy sauce 1 T. oil 1 medium garlic clove, very finely minced (or one frozen garlic cube) ⅛ tsp. black pepper Dash of cayenne pepper Dash of cumin Dash of cinnamon Dash of smoked paprika 1½ tsp. brown sugar Enjoy a homemade version of the latest food trend. Feel free to omit one or two of the spices, but don’t add more than the recommended amounts, as the best part of this mix is the subtle flavor that each spice lends to it without overwhelming the taste. Any combination of roasted nuts can be used.

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Mix all ingredients besides the brown sugar in a lined cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. 2. Add brown sugar and mix. Bake an additional 5 to 7 minutes. Remove pan from oven immediately.

It’s 3:37 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Shouts of, “I can’t find my robe!” and “Where’s the brush?” and “Who’s still in the shower? They’re taking too long!” fill my home. With just minutes to go until we usher in the Shabbos Queen, my home is hopping. Things are hectic, frantic. I tiptoe down the steps, ready to bentch licht and welcome Shabbos into my home. A quick look around has me calling, pleading for all ablebodied forces to somehow make this happen. “The lights! Did anyone check the lights? And why are the helmets sprawled across the entryway? Anyone?!” I finally turn to the candles to light, but — “Don’t tell me! We finished the matches last week! Someone, please find a lighter — and why didn’t we remember earlier?” December 4, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 123 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Midweek, I receive a beautiful Erev Shabbos checklist. It has everything I would need. But with a quick reality check, I realize that even reading that list on Friday, let alone checking items off, would be a distant dream. So after toying with ideas, and knocking heads with other busy mothers and wives, a checklist is born. Not an Erev Shabbos checklist, but a checklist that carries through all week. It looks something like this: “Sunday: cleaners, hems, repairs; Thursday: prepare tablecloth and leichter; Friday: everything else.” I send a draft to my neighbor for her approval. Within seconds she’s calling. “You have it all wrong,’’ she says. “Not all wrong, but almost. Friday is not supposed to be ‘everything else.’ It should be a calm day, focused on welcoming the Shechinah into our homes.” She connects me to Hadassah Dina Goldenberg of the Bo’i Beshalom Shabbos project, and suddenly, this idea catapults into a project none of us had ever dreamed of. Fast forward three months...

It’s 4:37 on Wednesday afternoon. “Who can find a oneminute Shabbos job?” I call out. My six-year-old scampers to the bathrooms, taking count of which are stocked with tissues and which are out. My four-year-old prepares diapers in a designated basket. Two checks on their Erev Shabbos Helper charts. (See below.) It’s a mindset. Our magnet, reading “Thinking of Shabbos all week long” with a checklist below it, is prominently displayed on my fridge. Whether we stick to the checklist perfectly or not, Shabbos prep is no longer designated to the last few hours before sundown. On Motzei Shabbos we already take stock of which Shabbos items are running low. I add them to my Sunday shopping list, and as soon as they’re home, open the packaging and have the items ready long before crunch time. And Sunday I’m also preparing chicken to freeze, baking challah or doing anything else that can alleviate my load later in the week, leaving Thursday for the really last-minute to-dos. Suddenly I find that “Hayom yom rishon b’Shabbos” has taken on a new meaning.
PART II
The Group It’s 3:37 on Friday afternoon. Seventeen cherubic faces, their Shabbos robes crisp, sit around the playroom. One by one, each child gets their turn. “Devora, what did you do l’kavod Shabbos Kodesh? We want to hear from you!” Some are shy, some loud, each sincere and ever proud. The four-year-old in a soft velvet robe, with glowing eyes and rosy cheeks, says, “I lined up all the toys on the porch!” Beside her, a confident elementaryage girl exclaims, “I vacuumed the playroom and helped clean my sister’s room.” Next, the sweet blond girl on the couch offers simply, “I took a bath.” And others soon follow. “I ripped the paper towel.” “I swept.” “I watched the baby so my mommy could clean.” “I put away the weekday shoes and headbands.” “I got dressed on my own!” And a first grader timidly adds, “I finished my whole chart.” (See below.) She displays her completed Erev Shabbos Helper chart to the wideeyed faces around her. The program is simple. It evolved from the need to keep our young ones entertained in a positive way during those (now much calmer) Friday afternoons. Forty-five minutes before Shabbos, a group of four- to sevenyear-old girls (and a few little brothers too) gather together in our home. We sing a little, regale them with a middos story with a lesson and a chant, and sing our “theme song.” The whole program takes a half-hour, after which each participant leaves with a cookie or small Erev Shabbos treat.
LY R I C S : What’s that sound that I hear? Shabbos Kodesh is coming near I’m dressed my best The house is clean I’m ready to greet the Shabbos Queen!
Sounds of cleaning Sounds of baking Smell that food that Mommy’s making Though we’re busy Now we’ll stop! Take one last look at the clock Cuz Shabbos Kodesh’s almost here…

A Note to Readers: How in the world did we make this change happen in our home? First we needed to adopt a certain mindset: Erev Shabbos is designated only for Shabbos preparation. No catching a sale at the mall. No shoe shopping for the kids who are only out of school on Friday afternoon. Friday after chatzos is just for Shabbos. Not even for folding that mound of weekday laundry or organizing that closet or trimming the two-year-old’s bangs. Just Shabbos. When and how will everything else happen? Seforim on the topic teach us that the hours after chatzos on Friday afternoon are indeed meant for thoughts of Shabbos and teshuvah alone. If this is what we are supposed to be doing, we daven that Hashem gives us the siyata d’Shmaya so we can achieve it. And it is astounding to see how indeed He does. The mindset is also about thinking of Shabbos as early as possible, and then letting go of some expectations. It’s probably more kavod Shabbos to welcome Shabbos calmly than to Windex the windows one last time. Make a list of your family’s to-dos for Shabbos, and then spread it out throughout the week. And on Friday itself, start the prep as early as possible — and not just the children, but the adults too. Showering, cosmetics, even davening Mincha — all the “last-minutes” — can happen earlier in the day. Aim for 1 or 2 p.m. (Until you’re prepared to throw yourself into the project, it’ll be tough to enlist your family!) And now that you’re all ready, you can read a story to the young ones, let them practice folding all week long pretty napkins, play a game or even say Tehillim with your children.
Last¯ MInute done first. Think of Shabbos all week long, and much of the last-minute Erev Shabbos rush can be avoided.
Use this list and add your own ideas of chores that can be done early in the week. Hem down?

A Novel The year is 1916. Ruby Zucker is eager to begin the last leg of her educational journey by joining Miss Parker’s, a boarding school for girls. Little does Ruby know what lies in store for her...
A historical drama you won't be able to put down!
For the Juniors: It’s a beautiful thing to get young children involved and excited about helping for Shabbos. And the “Clean the playroom!” command might not be the way to go. In our house, we often play a game in which I say, “I’m gonna close my eyes and count to fifteen. You run around looking for a Shabbos job, and then come back and shout it out.” Then all the children run around to claim their job. One child might enjoy lining up the shoes on the rack, and another might love making beds. The children are not our cleaning help. It would be nice if they would choose the jobs we desperately need help with, but letting go a little goes a long way. And you might actually enjoy the fact that the small things that were not even on your list got done...
As Hadassah Dina Goldenberg says, there’s nothing like the feeling of bentching licht, of welcoming the Shechinah with open arms and the feeling of “I’ve been waiting for you all day!” I can’t say that we’ve been zoche to that every week. Inevitably, on many Fridays the baby will get dirty or a child will spill something just moments before I was hoping to light. But even with the unpredictable, wonderful parts of life, most weeks find us welcoming Shabbos well before the zman. And that’s a wonderful feeling too. May it be a zechus and bring yeshous for all — because Shabbos is the mekor habracha. If you have any comments or questions, please email thinkingofshabbos@gmail.com.

As the sun disappears behind the treetops, the zman bell sounds and a palpable sense of serenity settles upon our humble homes. Shabbos has arrived, and if you listen closely, you might just hear the final exhale of the tired week as she leaves us...
After days of being hyper-focused on what we deemed “priorities,” this Divine day lifts us up high, and from our vantage point, our focus shifts and we are reminded of what is truly important. Shabbos is the day Hashem marked for family — He chooses to spend it with His precious children. Taking a hint from the Creator Himself, let’s recognize the day for its wonderful restorative properties and the opportunity to spend time with the people we love. And here’s a novel idea: Why not have the hours leading up to Shabbos designated as family time as well? Preparations add a sense of purpose — and pride — to all of our meaningful moments. The positive feelings are shared by all who work toward the common goal. Let’s not deprive our children from experiencing that awesome feeling of fulfillment. After all, getting our young ones involved in Shabbos preparation is extraordinarily helpful for us, and surprisingly healthy for them.
December 4, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 135 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Live and Learn Shabbos teaches us so much about life. Gifted to us by our loving Creator, the day’s purpose is replete with meaning and powerful lessons. Preparations for Shabbos can serve as lifelong lessons, too.
Revel in Responsibility The greatest gift we can give our children is a life of ease and happiness. And contrary to what (too) many assume, sparing our children from responsibilities and limiting their participation in preparations isn’t how that gift is obtained. If we are to take a hint from our dear Shabbos, the ultimate gift of happiness and leisure, we’d be remiss not to note how the day is defined by its rules and responsibilities. In spite of that — or more accurately, because of that — the day is sacred and sanctified. Each moment is measured and meaningful. Responsibilities make us feel loved and secure. They remind us that what we do matters. Furthermore, if preparation for Shabbos wouldn’t demand any effort from our end, we would most likely not revel in the peace of the day either — cer-
136 / THE MONSEY VIEW
tainly not to the same extent we do when we work hard. This is why the day is so much more appreciated in adulthood, when the reprieve feels well earned. Allow kids to experience that satisfaction. Let them luxuriate in the day as well!
Partake in the Process The greater our investment in a project, the more we connect to it. Let’s have our children form a deeper connection with this special day. It is up to us to show them how to make Shabbos “their own.” Start them off with age-appropriate tasks: Polishing door knobs will make little ones feel important, while washing floors will have older ones feel accomplished. Children can shine the silver that will grace the Shabbos table with a silverpolishing glove, and setting the dining table is another task they can take great pride in. There’s something incredibly rewarding about serving a dish at the Shabbos table that one has made himself. Children can choose to make one of the dips, a dessert, or, depending on the age of the child, they can even make the kneidel, kugel, soup (or just peel the veg-

Responsibilities make us feel loved and secure. They remind us that what we do matters. gies for it). When that dish is eaten, look out for the smile on your child’s face. Worth millions!
Hardworking Helpers Feeling reluctant about involving your precious darlings in grimy housework? Don’t. Most of us had a number of responsibilities in our childhood homes, and we were all the better for it. In recent years, that trend has drastically shifted. Nowadays parents are rather protective of their progeny’s need to unwind after a long day of school. This mentality is partly due to parents wanting to spare their children the drudgery they remember having to endure, but the more popular explanation for keeping kids out of housework is the conviction that the children’s first priority should be their studies. And that is where parents are making a grave mistake. Let us be clear: Education is important. But if we think that by prioritizing their education — to the exception of all else — we are adequately preparing them for the future, we are missing the point by a mile.
Confidence and Competence Our children’s education is not limited to the books they read and the information they retain. Throughout their childhood, they are acquiring habits that will follow them through life. By protecting them from work, we are actually doing them a disservice. The University of Minnesota conducted a twenty-year study and found that the best predictor of success in adulthood, both in professional and personal life, seemed to be having had the responsibility of chores at a young age. Apparently, helping out at home was a greater contributor to their level of success than financial or familial stability. Harvard University ran their own studies on 724 of their graduates, and their findings were quite similar. It seems that children just need
138 / THE MONSEY VIEW
love and chores to thrive. And when presented in a positive manner, partaking in chores feels like a most loving experience. It seems rather self-evident: Having childhood responsibilities has kids gaining maturity, discipline, confidence, competency, autonomy and perseverance — all traits necessary to become capable adults. Among the many benefits, consider the following: Healthy self-esteem: When young kids realize that they are valued as contributing members of the household, their confidence soars. That feeling of satisfaction they experience from a job well done will follow them throughout life. Cooperation: When young people are expected to do their share, and to offer help even when it isn’t solicited, they learn to be motivated and incorporate a mindset of pitching in when it comes to other settings as well. Time management: When children are expected to fit their chores into their days, it teaches them how to manage time. If we protect them from a busy schedule now, how do we expect them to manage when real life is going to require of them a whole lot more? Happiness: The greatest indicator for success as adults is happiness. Incidentally, it is also every parent’s most fervent wish for their child. But did you know that the key to happiness is appreciation? Protecting our offspring from ever exerting any effort is a surefire way of having them feel entitled. There’s little reason to express gratitude when they believe that they deserve to be served. Selfishness leads to perpetual dissatisfaction in life, whereas selfless givers have always ranked highest on the happiness scale. Isn’t it wonderful when the best gifts in life turn out to be absolutely free? By doing less for them, you’re giving them a whole lot more.
Why Wait? A common concern is that the child is not yet capable of doing a task correctly. But if we wait until children are age-ready to master the task,
Children ages 6 to 7 can be taught to: Sweep or vacuum floors Clear the dinette table Set the dining room table (chargers, silverware, napkins, etc.) Pack away seforim correctly Put away groceries Help plan dessert
Children ages 8 to 9 can be taught to: Polish shoes Vacuum the sofa Load the dishwasher Wash floors
CHILDREN’S CHORE CHART The following is a list of suggested tasks for your young helpers. Work with your children’s innate preferences and skill levels when assigning tasks. Compliment, encourage, and though you should demonstrate how a task should be done, once the responsibility is the child’s, never redo it while they are present.
Children ages 2 to 3 can be taught to:
Wash outside of kitchen cabinets Prepare the dining room table with tablecloth and silver Peel vegetables Prepare simple foods, such as tomato dip or baked chicken
Children ages 10 and up can be taught to: Fold laundry
Put toys away
Clean the bathroom
Create a neat stack of magazines or books
Wash windows and mirrors
Polish door knobs
Wash dishes/unload dishwasher
Children ages 4 to 5 can be taught to:
Polish silver with silver polishing gloves
Sort clean cutlery into the right bins
Prepare fairly simple dishes, such as potato kugel, farfel, kneidel, etc.
Wash the dinette table and chairs Take out empty bottles and boxes
Plan and make dessert
Water flowers

Throughout their childhood, children are acquiring habits that will follow them through life. precious time has passed. By their preteen years, these not-yet-young-adults are more likely to approach new responsibilities with reluctance. Starting early also gives kids the opportunity to master the skill, which only enhances their confidence and competence. With schedules that are busier than ever, some parents feel that the nagging and correcting that comes with assigning chores doesn’t make it worth it. They figure it will probably be less time-consuming to just do the tasks themselves. And they’re not entirely wrong, but they aren’t right either. Of course, allocating chores and getting the children involved in the process does require a bit of concerted effort at first, but the benefits reaped make the investment worth it. You’ll be proud of the mature, responsible, happy and productive children you’ve raised, and the future you will be so grateful to your present self for the education you gifted them. Because suddenly you’ll find that your workload has lightened, the day is less stressful and, surprisingly, no one feels overwhelmed.
Sudden Sundown This week we’ll be having our shortest Erev Shabbos of the year, but somehow, though the work will likely be intense, I trust you’ll be ready on time. Your table will be bedecked with your finest linen, and that distinct Shabbos aroma of chicken soup and freshly baked chal-

lah will be wafting through the air as your royal visitor alights. As the daylight fades away and you get ready to kindle the Shabbos flames, still before you make the bracha, take a moment to gaze upon your precious kinderlach gathered around you. You’ll be covering your eyes now and praying for their future. For their happiness. For a deep connection to Yiddishkeit. For maturity, discipline and kindness. And finally, for success. Every defining characteristic you want for them and every dream you carry can be obtained through a deeper connection to our dear Shabbos. The Shabbos Queen comes weekly. Allow your children to partake in welcoming her — she truly is the ultimate gift that keeps on giving.

I woke up that wintry Friday morning and felt… nothing out of the ordinary. It was just a regular short Friday, with all of the hectic preparations and last-minute chores involved. We made it to the zman with a couple of minutes to spare, and we were all justly proud of our concerted efforts. The kids made note of the time, pledging to beat their record next week. “This time we were ready seven minutes early!” Chayala proclaimed. It was a beautiful moment as we basked in our joint accomplishment. I complimented them, adding a special mention for Chayala and Heshy who had spurred their siblings to action. It was a heartwarming Shabbos night, just

like every other week. Nothing prepared me for Shalom’s (decidedly ungraceful) leap from the kitchen counter after he washed his hands for the seudah. “Mmmm!” he’d motioned emphatically to Rivka, making it very clear that he would nab the coveted seat near Tatty. Rivka protested, of course, and Shalom thankfully
It was as if Shabbos had wrapped its warm wings around the father and son, embracing them in the Shechinah’s protection. had to remain silent until he would receive his slice of challah. But what words wouldn’t accomplish, actions certainly could, and Shalom left nothing to chance. He jumped off the counter — and banged his face on the hard ceramic tiles. It was a frightening sound. My husband was standing right near Shalom and immediately bent down to assess the situation. Shalom had sustained a heavy nosebleed and a slight gash on his lip, but to our relief, the bleeding stopped within a few minutes. It was a good half-hour later that Shalom — our live wire with flaming red hair and a personality to match — woozily informed us that he was tired and just wanted to go to sleep. The bump on his forehead and his unfocused gaze told us all we needed to know. Hatzolah arrived in record time, and we were rushed to the emergency room. Shalom perked up a bit when he found himself sitting inside an ambulance with actual, real-life Hatzolah members, but it was obvious that he was exerting himself to speak coherently. I’ll spare you the details of our hurried admission and the interminable wait until an orderly informed us of the planned tests and procedures. Shalom was hooked up to an IV, and we settled in for a long wait. “Tatty, I’m cold,” Shalom whined. “Don’t they have normal blankets in this place? These sheets are seethrough!” My husband went looking for another flimsy sheet, and I smiled to myself. Shalom was definitely beginning to sound more like his usual exuberant self. With my fears receding, I began to take note of the hullabaloo around me. There were doctors and residents rushing about, nurses dispensing medication and taking vitals, and occasional blaring announcements over the loudspeakers. It was a tumultuous scene, as far removed from my cozy seudah table as one could possibly get. That’s when I saw them. Actually, I heard it before

I even saw anything — a soft, stirring melody emanating from the cubicle right next to ours. As Shalom continued interrogating my husband about hospital protocol, I closed my eyes and listened. Kah echsof no’am Shabbos… The words washed over me, so hauntingly beautiful that I felt the tears rushing to my eyes unbidden. An ER nurse snapped the curtain open, and I caught a glimpse of a yungerman, maybe 25 years old, swaying gently as he hummed the poignant Shabbos zemiros. Here goes, I thought, watching the nurse’s changing facial expressions. She seemed annoyed at the young man who was facing the wall, completely unaware of her presence, and I winced, anticipating the caustic remarks she would throw in his direction. To my surprise, however, the nurse merely cleared her throat and said, “Excuse me, sir. I need to take your baby’s vitals.” The zemiros stopped abruptly, and I watched as the young father put his baby down on the bed. My breath caught in my throat as I saw this beautiful, perfect baby lying with his eyes wide open on a white bed that was way too big for him. “Beautiful” seems like the wrong word to use to describe this angelic little boy, but how can one put words to the purity of a Yiddishe neshamah? Soft tufts of blond hair framed his round little face, and his big blue eyes were trained on his Tatty. Long lashes cast a slight shadow on his flushed cheeks, and I found myself davening for this nameless little boy who had already stolen my heart. “Blood pressure’s dropping,” the nurse tsk-tsked. “I’ll get the doctor.” “HaShabbos no’am haneshamos…” the young father continued singing. He held his tiny little boy in his arms and swayed back and forth. Wires and electrodes were positioned all over the child’s arms and chest, but in those moments they fell away. It was as if Shabbos had wrapped its warm wings around the father and son, embracing them in the Shechinah’s protection. I felt it. And in the ensuing hours, I knew that the medical personnel felt it too. In the hallways and in other cubicles, they spoke brusquely, even rudely at times. But when they tended to their little patient in the cubicle next to mine, they filtered their language and lowered their tone, showing respect. “Rabbi,” one doctor referred to him as he administered something to the lethargic little boy. “I’m not a rabbi,” the yungerman said softly. “Just a regular Jew.” I felt my eyes tearing and tried to camouflage it with a few convincing coughs to avoid Shalom’s probing questions. I couldn’t even pinpoint my jumbled mass
146 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 4, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
of emotions as I watched the doctor shake the man’s hand and say, with a meaningful inflection in his voice, “We’re doing all we can. You keep on doing yours, Rabbi, and we’ll do our part.” So he sang. Sitting with Shalom, who was getting increasingly impatient, we listened to the full gamut of Shabbos zemiros. It blotted out the raucous cries of a homeless vagrant, the furious rantings of an ill-bred patient, and the heated blame-game of sleep-deprived nurses. Kah Ribon Alam v’almaya… It was incongruous: Within that ward of controlled bedlam, there was a microcosm of peace, of truth and purity and magnificent kedushah, that could be neither understood nor ignored. It was there, encircling the little boy with such warmth. As Shalom was finally wheeled away for a precautionary CAT scan (which came back clear, baruch Hashem), I caught one last glimpse of the Ananei Hakavod right there in the bustling ER. I don’t know why the baby had been brought in. We were discharged as he was being admitted for overnight observation. But they weren’t alone. Shabbos Kodesh had come along with them. This unknown yungerman who insisted that he was “just a regular Jew” was so powerfully connected to its eternal secrets. And everyone in the ER on that Shabbos night felt it.

THE SHABBOS TABLE A Regal Welcome for the Shabbos Queen
Shabbos fosters feelings of togetherness: beautiful meals with family filled with delicious homemade food, heartfelt singing and meaningful round-table discussions. I believe the love for Shabbos is developed through appreciation of its physical and spiritual beauty. I find that the more I invest physically in Shabbos, the more I end up withdrawing spiritually. When it comes to preparing for Shabbos, I try not to leave any major tasks for Friday, especially in the winter. I love setting the table on Thursday night; it fills my home with a sense of calm and anticipation. The Shabbos table is not merely a platform off which food is eaten; “Zeh hashilchan asher lifnei Hashem” — it is “the table that is placed before Hashem.” Aside from doing these preparations to honor the Shabbos Hamalkah and to fill my home with that special Shabbos ambiance, I truly believe that what is invested in Shabbos, Hashem rewards doubly — and that is why I like making the effort. Shabbos generates bracha, and we are the lucky recipients.
December 4, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 151 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
A beautiful table setting is not about pretty flowers, elegant chargers or expensive china. All of them together often form a pretty mess that can hurt the eyes and clutter the mind. The art lies in color coordination, and most of all, balance. Big, puffy peony napkin rings, for example, only look beautiful when paired with the right minimalistic centerpieces and china.
There’s a midrash that says that Hashem created flowers specifically to adorn our Shabbos tables. The flowers I choose — their type and their color — are usually what inspire the rest of my table décor. According to the fresh picks of the week, I decide whether to go with gold, silver or both. (Yes, you can mix the two!) I might also match up napkins or napkin rings of the same color to complete the tablescape.
Since I appreciate the finer things in life, especially l’kavod Shabbos Kodesh, I generally don’t like using printed paper napkins on their own, because I prefer an authentic, richer look. When I do use paper napkins, I place each one over a basic white fabric napkin to take it up a notch and make it suitable to top fine china.
Over the years, I’ve managed to collect quite a variety of different napkin rings. Here are my two favorite ideas of pretty napkin rings you can make that won’t break the bank: 1.
The easiest way to create beautiful DIY napkin rings is by picking up nice faux florals. Then cut off the stems and attach them, with hot glue, to hard plastic disposable napkin rings. (These disposable napkin rings are available at Amazing Savings, usually in packages of six.) And you don’t have to stick with just flowers — be creative. In the photo (top, right), I used these gorgeous napkin rings made with pretty glistening silver snowflakes that I found at the dollar store. I like incorporating these rings into sparkly wintery white tablescapes.
2.
A velvet ribbon tied into a pretty bow is reusable and looks so elegant, especially when it matches the flowers.

We follow the age-old minhag of using a white tablecloth l’kavod Shabbos. The two most frequent questions I get is how we eat without a plastic covering the fabric tablecloth, followed by how my table can be set so early without the children messing it up. “How doesn’t it get dirty?” people wonder. “Especially with young children…” First, to answer that, I only use table linens that are washable and non-iron. Additionally, after Kiddush, I place a thick white napkin underneath the charger at each child’s place as a placemat. And while the tablecloth will still get stained from spills and such, I still prefer the beauty of a glistening textured fabric with a few stains over a perfectly clean tablecloth with it’s true beauty concealed under a plastic. But, of course, each to their own — everyone’s got to do what works best for them. As for the second question, teaching children consideration, proper table etiquette and “not to ruin pretty things other people worked on” are all part of basic chinuch. Any healthy child with whom you have a decent relationship can learn that if they’re trained with love. I grew up in a house full of children, some more active than others, and the Shabbos table was always beautifully set already on Thursday night. I don’t remember anyone minding the set table. We grew to appreciate it. In general, I believe that life doesn’t have to stop when there are little children in the house. For me, one of the greatest joys is setting the Shabbos table; it’s a labor of love. Besides, when children see the thought and effort and taste involved in preparing the Shabbos table, they are essentially sensing and learning the chashivus of Shabbos — a day worthy of so much honor.

BITES OF HISTORY
FIT FOR A CROWD On October 22, 2015, a braided challah measuring 20 feet long made it into the Guinness Book of World Records. It was baked for the annual Shabbos Project and was measured at the Great Big Challah Bake in Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn. For a very fresh bit of news, just this month, a bakery in Sydney, Australia, topped that record by baking a 32-foot-long challah. It used more than 150 pounds of dough and took ten hours to bake through.
Until the 1400s, the lechem mishnah used at the Shabbos table didn’t resemble the challos we know today. Yidden baked flatbread instead. The flatbread was typically made of white flour to differentiate it from the weekday variety, l’kavod Shabbos. Braided bread first became popular in Germany and Austria, from where it soon spread to Hungary, and later reached farther out in Eastern Europe. The transformation from the simple flatbread recipe to the fluffy challah we know occurred gradually. Some added eggs, and others added saffron — a spice that gave the challah a yellow color to resemble the look of cooked mann. Finally, sugar joined the ingredient list to give challah the honey-like taste describing the mann. Sefardim incorporated less eggs and sweeteners into the dough to circumvent the halachic shailos that would arise if the challah would becomes sweet as cake.
VARIOUS VERSIONS While fluffy, crusty challos are common in Ashkenazi homes, in some Sefardi communities, challah looks completely different… Morocco: Round loaves, sprinkled with spices and olive oil.

Yemen: Flat bread fried in a pan, known as lachoch.
Persia: Barbari, or flat glazed bread.

YEAST TIPS
CHALLAH IN NUMBERS
Using water that is too hot is the number-one cause for challah dough not to rise.
The 2 CHALLOS on the table represent the double portion of mann that fell in honor of Shabbos.
Room temperature is another crucial factor. Yeast feeds and reproduces best between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is too cool in your kitchen, try turning on the oven and placing the dough nearby so it can be warmed by the vapor. Salt interferes with yeast growth. Adding salt too soon or in a large quantity might keep your dough from doubling in size. (Besides adding flavor to your challah, salt also strengthens the dough. Don’t skip it!)
Dough made with at least 3 POUNDS and 11 OUNCES of flour requires challah to be taken with a bracha. The oblong shape of the challah resembles a vav. Putting two vav-shaped challos on the table TOTALS 12, like the Lechem Hapanim in the Beis Hamikdash. Braiding 2 LOAVES of 6 STRANDS each alludes to the Lechem Hapanim as well. The 7 INGREDIENTS classically used in challah — water, yeast, sugar, eggs, oil, flour and salt — each have deep symbolic meaning. According to the Arizal, it is fitting to have 12 CHALLOS on the table.
Sugar can help determine whether yeast is fresh or not. A sprinkle of sugar should make the yeast bubble up a bit. Moderate amounts of sugar help the yeast grow best, but adding an excess of sugar won’t help it grow more. Different Types of Yeast: • Active dry yeast has large granules and must be proofed in water before being used in a recipe. • Instant yeast has a finer texture and can be mixed right in with the dry ingredients. • Fresh yeast is soft and moist and has a shorter shelf life. It is mainly used by professionals. When used properly, all forms of yeast can yield the same results.
NIBBLES OF INSIGHT “EVEN ONE WHO USUALLY BUYS BREAD IN THE SHUK EVERY DAY SHOULD BAKE BREAD FOR SHABBOS IN HIS HOME.” –Ben Ish Chai “I DON’T KNOW HOW GEHINNOM COULD HAVE SHLITAH (CONTROL) OVER YIDDISHE FINGERS THAT BAKE CHALLOS L’KAVOD SHABBOS!” –Reb Yakov Yosef of Osroha
“IF YIDDISHE WOMEN WOULD KNOW THE GREAT S’CHAR OF BAKING CHALLOS L’KAVOD SHABBOS, THE BAKERY WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO SELL EVEN ONE CHALLAH!” –Satmar Rav, zy”a

Rodeo Realty l 386 Rt 59, suite 300 l Monsey, NY 10952 l 845.364.0195 Joel Klein CELL: 845.596.7399 EMAIL: jkleinhomes@gmail.com Many time, I am asked about what comes first, the mortgage or the house? or the Realtor or the mortgage Loan officer? Naturally, when a family makes a decision to move and buy a home, they go on-line, peruse homes, video tours and pictures. When they do contact a Realtor, they want to see homes and it can come as a surprise that they need to be preapproved for a mortgage first. Why? Sellers will not accept offers from buyers that are not pre-approved for a mortgage loan. Therefore, a Realtor, who is presenting an offer with the intent to get it accepted will not do so without making sure that the buyer is already preapproved. Mark and Hanah walked into an open house one Sunday and fell in love with the home. It was in a neighborhood that they loved and modestly priced. They presented and offer and told the
realtor that they are for SURE pre-approved. Well, they needed a co-signor, who was self employed, and had to provide multiple tax returns. By the time all was provided, Mark and Hannah lost the house, because they weren’t prepared, and the seller accepted another offer-at a lower price!! It was a bitter pill to swallow. 75% of buyers can be pre-approved the same day but it’s the 25% that need special care or needs to provide more documentation. That is why working on your pre-approval is so important. And who do you use for your mortgage? Aren’t all guidelines the same? Yes, but every lender views guidelines in a different way. And additionally, some banks have their own stricter overlays on
the guidelines. Although we are in the age of technology, human underwriters still sign off on every loan and who they are and how they view the loan is key in mortgage loans being approved or denied. Because of the human factor, how the loan is presented also plays a very key role. That is where you Loan Officer can make the difference between an approval or denial. If you are starting to look for a home, or if you are selling your home and may need a mortgage to purchase your next home, the mortgage approval must be addressed. For a list of “Do’s and don’ts” and a copy of my book , “The homebuyers companion”, please email or call me.

“My life is in danger!” Tamar! Rescued woman to speak live in NY this December for Yad L’Achim Tamar to tell her personal story of rescue at a series of events across New York BY: SHOSHANA WEINTRAUB “He said to me, The day you leave me, is the day you will die”. Tamar, a descendant of holocaust survivors, was taken as a teenager to a foreign country to be married against her will. In a series of secret missions, Tamar and her children were rescued by Yad L’Achim and taken to a safe location back in Eretz Yisrael. In a series of events across the New York area, (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Monsey, Queens, the 5 Towns, and Long Island) Tamar will appear live in person to tell her story of rescue for the first time in America. Her story will inspire you and is a truly transformational experience in seeing a proud Jewish woman tell her tale of triumph over great darkness and evil. Over the past year alone, Yad L’Achim has brought the speaking tour to the US, Israel, the UK with over 50 inspiring and successful events. The tour is now coming to New York with Tamar, who has never spoken before in the US. Young Jewish girls, often from troubled backgrounds, are groomed by Arab men who, often posing as Jews, offer them gifts and attention to gain their trust. But once they follow their new sweetheart into Arab territory, the excitement turns to terror. Women are routinely subject to depraved violence and abuse at the hands of the men they hoped would be their Prince Charming. Their children are raised as Arab Muslims and taught to hate Jews. “It’s almost impossible for a Westerner to imagine how totally trapped they are,” says Yossi Eliav, Director of Special Projects, organizer of the tour. “Some live like prisoners, without access to a phone or even the freedom to go outside.” “One woman did not have access to a phone for 32 years and no way to call for help,” says R’ Nesanel Gantz, Director of Yad L’Achim in America. “People aren’t aware how many hundreds of girls are drawn into these nightmare scenarios each year,” says Eliav. “Our mission is to show their plight to the world and save as many lives as we can.” To date, Yad L’Achim has rescued thousands of these imprisoned women and their children. The operations are conducted with the utmost secrecy, as the lives of the women, their children, and all operatives are at high risk. Once free, Yad L’Achim provides safe shelter for these women and their children and supports their reintegration into

society. The number of Jewish women and children trapped in these conditions today numbers in the thousands. Yad L’Achim also works tirelessly on prevention awareness as well.
