AN INSENSITIVE INFRINGEMENT (Re: And Everyone Was Gawking, Issue 222) Thank you for the article you recently published that clearly highlighted the basic rules of etiquette for emergency situations. I would like to point out one crucial part that is particularly important for our generation in 2019: Pulling out a phone to snap a picture or take footage of an emergency situation or interesting scenario — or worse yet, passing it on for the world to see — is a terrible disgrace and the cause of much shame and humiliation for the people involved. People doing so do it out of habit, not realizing how disgraceful and demeaning it truly is. In the merit of protecting another person’s dignity, may we only hear besuros tovos. F. Miller

INBOX There are lots of choices that come along with the birth of a little boy. Many of them, like the decor at the vach nacht or the design of his nursery, won’t have lifelong bearing. Yet there is one decision that will follow the child for the rest of his life: his name. Not merely some random set of syllables for him to introduce himself by, nor an easy handle for others to refer to him, the name parents choose for their child provides him with an identity. In fact, according to the Ari, zt”l, a name is the person’s very essence.

SHABBOS ALERT L’tovos harabim, I’d like to notify your readers that many brands of tissues currently being used in shuls have tissues that are attached one to another and therefore pose a halachic issue on Shabbos. A Reader

NAME-GIVING IN ANTIQUITY Names are as old as man itself, and there was a certain simplicity and authenticity to the process in our early history. Adam was so named because he was created from the earth. Chava’s name identified her as the mother of all life. As each subsequent human entered the world, they were given an identification, a name that was distinctly theirs. The name choice was inspired by either the circumstances surrounding the person’s birth or the hopes for his future, like when Avraham and Sarah named their son Yitzchak, referring to

A HEARTWARMING SEARCH I’m writing in response to a situation I observed on Erev Sukkos, when a neighbor dropped a diamond earring (their kallah’s Sukkos gift) on her porch steps, and no amount of searching, segulos or tzedakah seemed to uncover it. At a loss, she dialed Chaverim’s number, and during one of the busiest nights of the year, a few members came running. Equipped with special lighting, sensors and endless patience, the volunteers searched for over an hour, until the earring was miraculously found. I was awed and amazed at the chesed of people in our community, who — for no payment — come running to spare a fellow Yid agmas nefesh. Nobody’s life was endangered; it was a matter of money and aggravation only, but they saved the day (and a family’s night). L. K.

A COMPREHENSIVE ADDENDUM (Re: What’s His Name?, Issue 221) First, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed your piece on Yiddish names. As someone who is obsessed with Jewish onomastics as a hobby, I found it particularly interesting. However, I feel I must point out what I feel are errors of omission and commission. 1. You write that no names are repeated in Sefer Bereishis and that the concept of repeated names just didn’t exist therein. This doesn’t seem to be completely accurate; while there are no repeating names of famous figures like Avraham or Noach, there are others who modified an ancestor’s given name. The person that comes to mind is Tuval-Kayin, a descendant of the accursed Kayin. This may be an exception that proves the rule (at least in Sefer Bereishis). In the same vein, when you say that the concept of repeated names didn’t exist in Malchus Beis Dovid, it is interesting to note that while naming after ancestors was indeed not known, in at least one case a king in Tanach was apparently named after a major Yiddish historical figure. I am speaking of King Menashe, son of Chizkiyahu. According to some, he was named

76 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

THE BORO PARK VIEW / 83

after Menashe, son of Yosef. They ascribe this curious name-giving to the climate of the times. As will be recalled, Chizkiyahu reigned during the time when the Assyrians utterly decimated the northern kingdom of the Aseres Hashevatim. The aforementioned were generally ruled by monarchs descending from either Menashe or Efrayim. Chizkiyahu is mentioned in Tanach as making overtures to the remnants of those shevatim and inviting them to Yerushalayim (seeking to repair the rift begun by Yeravam ben Nevat many generations before). Some believe he named his son Menashe as an expression of earnestness and affection to his northern brethren. (Incidentally, speaking of the northern shevatim, there are kings named Yeravam in that kingdom, the second one presumably named after the first. Parenthetically, there are several other names in that line of monarchs that are not unique and are already found earlier in Tanach: Zimri, Yehoram, Amatzya, Zechariah, Hoshea, et al.) 2. You write with surprise at the preponderance of the name Yishmael among tannaim and amoraim. First, the name Yishmael seemed to have been not all that uncommon among Yidden already in the era of the First Beis Hamikdash; for instance the assassin of Gedaliah ben Achikam is described as Yishmael ben Netanya from the “Royal House [of Davidi].” Most importantly, the Gemara writes that Yishmael did teshuvah at the end of his life. It should be pointed out that virtually all Yishmaels mentioned in the Mishnah and Gemara were Kohanim and were presumably named after the Kohen Gadol Yishmael ben Elisha. This name continued to be popular among Yidden in Italy (most of those rabbanim likewise happened to be Kohanim), but not among Yidden in Islamic countries for reasons that are perhaps obvious. 3. Additionally, you write that the names Chavakuk and Malachi have completely disappeared. I, for instance, have a friend of Yemenite extraction whose first name is Malachi. Chavakuk, too, has not disappeared completely; it is a common personal name as well as surname among Yemenite Yidden.

4. You write that the precise onset of the practice of repeating names is difficult to ascertain. While the names of the three patriarchs are not repeated anywhere in Tanach, some of the names of the twelve sons of Yaakov appear as follows: There is a Bohan, son of Reuven, in Yehoshua 15, a Shimon in Ezra 10. There are four Yehudahs in Nechemiah and one in Ezra (incidentally, Ezra is an Aramaic form of Azariah; Azariah was Ezra’s grandfather). There is a Sachar, son of Oved-Edom, in Divrei Hayamim I, 26; a prophet named Gad mentioned in Shmuel and in Divrei Hayamim; a Yigal, son of Yosef, mentioned in Bamidbar 13; an Asaf, son of Yosef, mentioned in Divrei Hayamim I, 25; and two more Yosefs, one in Ezra and one in Nechemiah. It seems that the Yiddish practice of naming sons after famous figures from Tanach only became widespread during the period of the Second Beis Hamikdash. Thus, we see many personages in the books of Ezra and Nechemia with very familiar names from Tanach. The name Yoel appears eleven times throughout Tanach. It is the third most common name in Tanach (preceded by Zachariah and Meshulam). Additionally, when you look at the genealogical tree of several personages in Tanach, you do see the same name repeated. Here is one example: Dovid named one of his daughter’s Tamar, quite possibly after the female progenitor of Malchus Beis Dovid, Tamar, the second wife of Yehudah. See Bereisheis Rabba, 37:7: “Raban Shimon ben Gameliel said, ‘The first ones were endowed with Divine inspiration, therefore they named their children after an event; however, we who do not possess that quality, we name after our ancestors.’” 5. You write that Pesach (and Shabsai) was a new name that arose in the early Middle Ages. Yet it is found (along with Shabsai) in

Ezra and Nechemia. 6. Chanukah as a personal name is at first found among the Khazars. The semi-legendary Khazars produced a Yiddish king by the name of Chanukah. There are others from that region who were called by this name. It’s actually still a common first name among Bukharians and other Jews from the Caucasus and Central Asia. I have also come across Purim as a given name in Sukhumi in Caucasian Abkhazia. 7. The first recorded notable Jew named Moshe seems to be Rav Moshe Gaon who was a rosh yeshivah in Sura in the ninth century, but this sacred name was certainly used even earlier, as we see that the Bavli amora Rav Huna’s father was named Moshe bar Atzri. Baruch Hashem, we are being deluged with chasunah invitations — from relatives, friends, acquaintances, present and previous neighbors, random people we meet on the street, the local list, etc. A word of advice: Many times, after an invitation arrives, we scrutinize it front and back, with no idea of who the chasan/kallah are, who their parents are, and remain flummoxed as to who the grandparents are. These invitations go straight into the trash, and we are none the wiser. If you’re sending an invitation to a fifth cousin (thrice removed) or to someone who was your classmate 27 years ago in another lifetime, a small enclosed introductory note would be sensible so that we can participate in your simcha. Parshas T o ld o s By: Malka Schneps

In Parshas Toldos, Yaakov Avinu bought the birthright from Eisav. Later, Yaakov dressed in goatskins and presented himself to his father Yitzchak Avinu in place of Eisav for the bracha, and Yitzchak blessed Yaakov instead of Eisav. Eisav became enraged, as it says, “Vayistom Eisav es Yaakov… — And Eisav hated Yaakov because of the blessing that his father had blessed him, and Eisav said to himself, ‘Let the days of mourning for my father draw near, I will then kill my brother Yaakov’” (Bereishis 27:41). Why did Eisav want to wait until the time of mourning for his father to kill his brother? What was it about the time of mourning that Eisav felt would make it the “right” time to kill Yaakov? The Kli Yakar explains that Eisav knew that when Yaakov would be an avel, he would be prohibited from learning Torah and would thus be without the protection of his limud haTorah. Eisav knew that the only time Yaakov would be vulnerable would be any time he stopped learning Torah, and that’s why he chose that time for his planned attack. It also says in this week’s parsha that Yitzchok declared, “…hakol kol Yaakov v’hayadayim yedei Eisav — … the voice is the voice of Yaakov, but the hands are the hands of Eisav” (Bereishis 27:22). Chazal explain that as long as Yaakov was using his voice — learning Torah — the hands of Eisav could have no power over him. And it is not only Eisav from whom we are protected in the zechus of Torah; it says in the Gemara (Sotah 21a) that the Torah protects the one who learns it — forever. Rabi Menachem bar Rabi Yosei explains this in terms of the saying from Mishlei: “Ner mitzvah v’Torah ohr — a mitzvah is a candle and the Torah is light” (Mishlei 6:23). Just as a candle only provides light temporarily, a mitzvah only protects a person for as long as they are engaged in that mitzvah. But the Torah is compared to permanent light. The Gemara continues, stating regarding Torah: “‘When you walk it shall lead you’ — in this world; ‘when you sleep it shall watch over you’ — in death;

86 / THE MONSEY VIEW

‘and when you awake it shall talk with you’ — in Olam Habah.” Indeed, the Torah protects forever. Especially now, when our community has experienced so much violence, rachmana litzlan, we need the protective powers of the heilige Torah. The Torah protects us. Learning Torah protects the one who learns it (Sotah 21a), and the Torah protects us as a people. Our power is in hakol kol Yaakov. The protection of Torah covers the one who learns it, and it extends to those who support it. The Chida in Rosh Dovid, Parshas V’zos Habracha, notes that it is written: “Semach Zevulun b’tzeisecha v’Yissachar b’ohalecha — Rejoice, Zevulun, in your going out, and Yissachar in your tents” (Devarim 33:18). Why should Zevulun need to be assured that he would be happy going out? The Chida quotes the Etz Hachaim, Parshas Vayakhel, that a person who supports Torah is protected as well; not only does he get half of the s’char, but he is also protected even as he goes to work. Zevulun feared that if he went to work, he would not be safe from the yetzer hara, but in the zechus of supporting Yissachar, he would be protected. The Torah is our protection. We must do everything in our power to either maximize our learning or to maximize the learning of those who learn. We must show kavod to those who learn Torah, and we certainly must show kavod to the Torah itself by not only learning it, but by truly living by it. For a man this could mean maximizing one’s own learning and/or entering into a Yissachar-Zevulun arrangement, and for a woman this could mean enabling her husband to maximize his learning, whether by enabling him to sit in kollel, attend a night shiur or learn with a chavrusa, or by making sure that he has quiet time and space if he learns at home. This world is fraught with dangers, but Hakadosh Baruch Hu reassures us: “Barasi yetzer hara, barasi lo Torah tavlin — I created the yetzer hara, and I created the Torah as its antidote” (Kiddushin 30b). We must stand strong and brave, and continue to live by what we know is right.

Lawsuit Plaintiffs Hope to Limit Power of Jewish Vote in East Ramapo School Board Elections Radical changes may be coming before the next school board election, with a federal judge setting the date for a trial that could alter how members earn seats on the nine-person board. The Journal News reported that U.S. Federal District Court Judge Cathy Seibel refused the East Ramapo Central School Board’s attempt to dismiss a lawsuit to prevent the creation of a ward system that would allow voters to cast their ballots only for school board seats in their immediate geographic area. Under the current atlarge system, every registered voter in the district has the ability to cast their ballot for any open school board seats in the May elections. The lawsuit, which will come to trial on February 10, was filed in 2017 by the Spring Valley chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and several African American and Latino voters. The plaintiffs hope to increase the number of minorities on the school board in an effort to promote more spending on local public schools. Currently, the East Ramapo School District has 38,000 registered students, 27,000 of which attend local yeshivos. Two-thirds of the school board’s members are members of the Jewish community, and three seats will be coming up for election this spring. Senior New York Civil Liberties Union attorney Perry Grossman, which is representing the NAACP, said that they were pleased by Seibel’s decision.

92 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

“We remain committed to ensuring that minority voters have an equal opportunity to participate in the political process and a fair chance to elect their candidates of choice in East Ramapo,” said Grossman. Harry Grossman, president of the school board, blasted the NAACP for using race as a tool to change the makeup of the school board, a political ploy that has forced the district to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars that should have been dedicated to students on legal fees, which may be as high as $1 million. “Race has nothing to do with voting in the district,” he said. “The real purpose of this lawsuit is to promote candidates whose tax, political and educational policies the plaintiffs prefer over those supported by the overwhelming majority of voters in the district, irrespective of race.”

Property Taxes Heading South as Ramapo Unveils New Budget Working hard to trim a deficit left to him by his predecessor, Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht gave his annual budget message last Friday, announcing a slight decrease in property taxes in certain areas. The Journal News reported that the new budget has already been approved by the town board and will go into effect on January 1. According to the new plan unveiled by Specht, property taxes will decrease $206 per $50,000 of assessed value in unincorporated Ramapo, with $58 decreases for property owners in the villages of Montebello and Wesley Hills on the same assessed values. Property owners in the village of Suffern will see decreases of $57 per $50,000 of assessed values, while Spring Valley villagers will see a more modest decrease of $17 on the same assessed values. Specht pledged to continue serving the needs of Ramapo residents while simultaneously looking to trim costs, an effort that is reflected in the latest budget. “Once again, we have been able to provide additional funding without raising taxes by appropriating excess fund balances in the other operating funds and special districts,” said Specht.

Recap: Binyamin is running a fever and recuperates at home. Emmanuel, the worker at the nursing home with the two dogs, gets Zeidy to buy raffle tickets; Zeidy is hoping to win a new house for his daughter’s family. At 6:40 a.m., when Binyamin was awakened by the tumult around him, he still felt quite ill. But when he opened his eyes again an hour later, he felt somewhat better. “Mommy?” he croaked, half asleep — and then blushed into his pillow. Why was he calling his mother like a little boy? He washed his hands and got up. Yes, he was more steady on his feet than yesterday. No, actually not. He sat down again quickly. The morning noises that he loved, and which he’d almost forgotten, wafted into the dining room. There were dishes clinking in the kitchen and cries of “Where’s my brush?” and “Who’s helping me find Nati’s other shoe?” and “Mommy, tell him to stop; he’s touching my chocolate milk!” Rapid footsteps, a falling chair, a giggle, a whiny wail, and Devoiry’s voice asking Itzik to please tell her already what he wanted in his sandwich. “Binyamin?” His mother walked into the room. “How are you? How was your night?” “Baruch Hashem, I think I feel a little better.”

“Really?” She looked at him doubtfully. “You don’t look better. I’m leaving to work in a few minutes. I made you some tea in a thermos. Make sure to drink a lot, okay? Do you want another blanket?” “No, if I get cold I’ll take one of the blankets from the other boys’ beds.” “Fine, they’re folded up in Nati’s crib.” “Thanks.” He tried to smile, but his facial muscles ached. He must really have the flu or something. Little heads kept popping in from behind the accordion door. “Bye, Binyamin!” “Refuah sheleimah!” “Get well soon!” “Don’t leave before we get back, okay?” The door of the house opened and closed repeatedly for the next ten minutes, until there was finally silence. Binyamin rose to get dressed. If he remembered correctly, there was an 8:15 minyan in the shul right near his house. But what about his tefillin? His tefillin were in yeshivah! As he was wondering which of the

shuls near his yeshivah had a minyan soon, the door opened and his father walked in. “Good morning, Binyamin,” his father greeted him warmly. “Hey, where are you going?” “To yeshivah. I left my tefillin there.” “You are not going to yeshivah now,” his father replied. “You’re burning up with fever. Take my tefillin.” “I…” Suddenly Binyamin felt dizzy, and he quickly sank down onto a nearby chair. “Daven at home, Binyamin,” his father urged. “You need another day of rest.” The doctor that he went to that evening determined that it was a severe case of the flu, but Binyamin did not need the doctor to tell him how severe it was. He spent the next four days burning with fever, which kept climbing and then finally dipping. Only by Friday did he feel some semblance of a reprieve.

***** Joe Ludmir was awakened by the ringing phone next to his bed. With his eyes closed, he lifted the receiver. “Mr. Ludmir, this is room service. You noted that we can suggest our breakfast menu to you at this time,” a voice said. “Mmm… a few more minutes,” Joe replied. He looked around in confusion. The alarm clock on his cell phone hadn’t rung yet — actually, it probably had rung, but he hadn’t heard it. “Excellent. The menu is waiting for you on the doorknob of your room. Please mark what you’d like to order, and return it when you get a chance.” “Yes, yes,” he replied drowsily. He lay there for a few more minutes, and then, when his thoughts finally began to come into focus, he got up and went to wash his hands. After marking the leather-backed menu with his breakfast choices, he returned it to the doorknob and took his tallis and tefillin out of his valise. He’d daven and eat breakfast, and then he’d start searching. He had to try and find some more details about his past. Right now, all he knew was that as a child during the war, he’d had a one and only friend. The friend to whom he owed his life. *****

Behind him, the driver leaned on his car, smoking. “Did you make sure the archive is open, sir?” “Yes,” Joe replied. “But it’s not so simple to get in there. Let’s see how much they ask for. In general, they don’t like people nosing around to see old documents, especially not when they are Jews.” “The Bratislava City Museum is also open now. If

side. “I can try and look it up on the computer,” he said. After a few seconds, without raising his eyes from the screen, he asked, “Are you Jewish?” “Yes.” “And you were there during the war?” “What?” “Were you one of the children in that institution?” “Yes.” “I realized that you are Slovakian, because your accent is good. Look, there’s some information here, but with very few details. The staff changed over the years… I have no idea what they did with all of their paperwork, and if it was even saved.” Joe raised his eyes to the dozens of shelves that surrounded him, and just as he was about to ask what Bruno would suggest that he do, his phone rang. He looked at the screen. A phone call from Australia? Now? From Sam? “Hello?” he answered breathlessly. “What happened, Sam?” The Korean was whimpering, and his voice was a bit unclear because of the noise on the line. “Mr. Ludmir?” “Yes, it’s me.” “Mr. Alex Korman died last night.” The Korean’s whimpers turned into full-blown sobs. “Died?” Joe gripped the nearest shelf. “Yes.” “But I spoke to him yesterday morning by phone, and he sounded okay; everything was fine!” “That’s right…” Korman’s aide choked out. “But in the evening he was having trouble breathing, so we called the doctor and they took him to the hospital. But they couldn’t stabilize him. We were in the ICU all night.” Joe Ludmir bit his lips. “When is the funeral?” “We want to wait for you. When can you get here?” “Not before tomorrow night…” Joe paced up and down in the archive, ignoring Bruno who had abandoned the computer and had gone back to his metal locker. “I need to find out if I can get a flight out today.” “We’ll wait for you,” Sam said, and then he began sobbing again. “Oh, my poor Mr. Alex…” Joe returned to Bruno. “Thanks for trying to help me. I have to leave now,” he apologized. “My business partner died last night in Australia, and I need to get back there.” “Was he a young person?” the giant man asked politely. “No, not young at all.” Joe stood for a few minutes, staring into space, and then stuck his phone back into his pocket. Poor Alexander. To be continued...

Trump Administration Will No Longer Consider Jewish Communities in Judea and Samaria Illegal THE PULSE: Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the U.S. administration would no longer consider Israeli settlements located in the West Bank

110 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

to be illegal. He said that “Calling the establishment of civilian settlements inconsistent with international law has not advanced the cause of peace,” and that “The hard truth is that there will never be a judicial resolution to the conflict, and arguments about who is right and who is wrong as a matter of international law will not bring peace.” Pompeo’s statement overturned the Carter-era Hansell Memorandum, which declared that the Israeli settlement enterprise was “inconsistent with international law.” Pompeo’s declaration comes on the heels of an anti-settlement decision by the European Union’s top court that requires the labeling of all European imports from Judea and Samaria to be labeled as such. His announcement will serve to provide a much-needed emotional boost of support to those who defend Israel’s right to build throughout

its ancestral homeland that it conquered in the 1967 Six-Day War. This decision continues a trend of strong pro-Israel positions by this administration, such as moving the embassy to Jerusalem, recognizing the legality of Israel’s annexation of the Golan, and cutting off aid to the Palestinian Authority over its granting of stipends to the families of terrorists. However, most of these actions are primarily symbolic, as they have limited practical impact and are not recognized as valid by the international community. Additionally, should Israel actually act upon the Pompeo announcement and annex areas of Judea and Samaria, it will cause a host of new problems regarding the citizenship status of millions of Arab residents who are currently not citizens of Israel. Furthermore, according to recent media reports, Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Ron Dermer and Prime Minister Netanyahu have lobbied the U.S. to restore aid to the Palestinian Authority. This is because it is in Israel’s interest that the Palestinian Authority continues to function and not crumble and leave the territories in a state of anarchy. On Friday, 107 Democratic members of Congress sent a letter to Secretary Pompeo requesting that the administration reverse its position on Israeli settlements. THE IMPACT: The contrast between the stated positions of the Trump administration and congressional Democrats will only serve to sharpen the widening rift between Republicans and Democrats concerning their approach to Israel. Republicans will use this distinction to appeal to their base of evangelical voters who are strong supporters of Israel. The Republican position will also undoubtedly buttress the widespread support that they currently receive from many in the frum community. According to former Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren, the Democratic members of Congress took the bait that was neatly laid for them by Secretary Pompeo, and Pompeo’s announcement will likely have more impact domestically in the U.S. than anywhere else.

Messam Is Out, Bloomberg Is In THE PULSE: Miramar, Florida Mayor Wayne Messam

announced that he was suspending his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. Messam is a strong supporter of gun control and is an avid runner. Messam was always considered a long-shot candidate, and his candidacy never caught on with voters. Former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that he is officially entering the race. Bloomberg will have his work cut out for him as he is entering the primaries at a very late stage and does not poll well among Democratic primary voters.

THE IMPACT: Media reports indicate that Bloomberg is preparing a $100 million ad buy in several battleground states. This will be the most substantial single ad buy in American political history. Bloomberg plans to self-fund his campaign. As such, he will be unable to qualify for Democratic debates according to current criteria, which require that each participant reach a minimum threshold of unique donors. Bloomberg’s infusion of cash and his easy access to campaign funds should not be underestimated. His impact may yet be substantial.

Impeachment Roundup THE PULSE: This week’s public testimony featured

Alexander Vindman, Gordon Sondland, Jennifer Williams, Kurt Volker, Tim Morrison, Laura Cooper, David Hale, Fiona Hill and David Holmes. The testimony that caused the biggest stir was that of Ambassador Sondland when he explicitly stated that there was a “quid pro quo” with Ukraine and that President Trump ordered it. David Holmes testified that he overheard President Trump on a phone call with Ambassador Sondland requesting information on “the investigations.” Sondland stated that in a later phone call, the president told him that he wanted “no quid pro quo” from Ukraine, but that the later phone call was made after the whistleblower investigation had already begun. Fiona Hill stated that in the past, she was frustrated with Ambassador Sondland because “he wasn’t coordinating with us (at the National Security Council), because we weren’t doing the same thing that he was doing.” He was tasked with a “domestic political errand” while the NSC was working on national security. THE IMPACT: The testimony of career diplomats

and other officials provide strong evidence that corroborate the concerns that were expressed by the whistleblower. There seems to have been a concerted back-channel effort to use congressionally approved military assistance and an Oval Office meeting to pressure Ukraine to publicly investigate the Bidens and the mostly debunked 2016 “crowdstrike” election interference theory. However, even though some Republicans have categorized the president’s actions as wrong and troubling, none have come forward to back his impeachment. At this point, barring some unusually explosive developments, it seems unlikely that impeachment will result in the president’s removal from office. Furthermore, recent polling has shown that many Americans would prefer that the decision regarding the appropriateness of President Trump’s conduct and the verdict of whether he is fit for office be decided by the American public in 2020.

DIRECTIONS 1. To make cake, beat eggs with a fork. Add next six ingredients and beat well. 2. Add flour and baking powder. Mix until smooth. 3. Spray individual muffin tins with oil and sprinkle some vanilla sugar over oil. Divide batter evenly among pans. 4. Preheat oven to 350°. 5. To make topping, measure milk into a small bowl. Slowly add pudding mix and sugar, beating constantly with a fork. Beat in eggs and butter until smooth. Set aside for five minutes to thicken. 6. Place one square of chocolate into center of each pan over batter, pressing chocolate slightly into batter. Pour topping over batter. 7. Bake small muffins for 20 minutes, larger muffins for 30 minutes. Center should be slightly jiggly. Allow to cool for about 15 minutes. Notes: • Be creative and switch up flavors to your liking. Use any type of chocolate or a different flavor pudding. You can also sprinkle the bottom of the pans with cocoa or cinnamon and sugar instead of the vanilla sugar. • To easily melt butter, place butter into a cup. Set cup into a larger cup or small bowl filled with hot water and allow to sit for several minutes.

DIRECTIONS 1. In a mixing bowl, beat eggs well. Add cheese, sugar and salt. Beat. 2. Combine farina with baking powder. Pour into a bowl and mix well. 3. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

INGREDIENTS 5 eggs

⅛ tsp. salt

½ lb. farmer cheese

1 cup farina

⅓ cup sugar

½ tsp. baking powder

SOUP 6 cups milk

6 T. sugar

3 cups water

1 tsp. vanilla extract

4. Measure all ingredients for soup into a 5-quart pot and bring to a boil. (Watch pot as it cooks to avoid milk boiling over and making a mess on your stove.) 5. Drop large spoonfuls of kneidel mixture into boiling milk. Reduce heat to medium-low, and cook for 25 minutes, covered. Vent pot or keep cover slightly open to prevent boiling over. Add milk if necessary.

Cheesy Potato Kugel If you’re raising an eyebrow or making a face at this one, you’re surely in good company. That’s what every member of my family did when I announced that I was going to create a milchig version of “yapchik.” Until it came out of the oven, that is. Make this on a long Motzei Shabbos — or try the latke version for a Chanukah get-together — and don’t expect leftovers!

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

4 lb. potatoes (8 large or 12–14 small)

1. Preheat oven to 450°.

6 eggs

3. Peel potatoes and process in a food processor until finely ground.

½ cup oil

4. Pour over eggs and combine. Add milk. Mix well and pour into a 9x13 baking pan.

1 T. salt

5. Drop mozzarella cubes evenly over kugel and press into batter. Make sure all cheese is covered by kugel mixture.

¼ tsp. black pepper

6. Bake for about 1 hour until top is nicely browned.

1½ cup milk

Note: For latkes: Use only ¼ cup oil in batter. Heat 1–2 tsp. oil in frying pan over high heat. Drop large spoonfuls of batter into hot oil. Press 4–5 small cubes of cheese into each latke. Cover and fry for 5–7 minutes. Lower heat, flip latkes over and cook 5 minutes longer. Repeat for remaining batter. (Makes 35 latkes.)

4 oz. cubed mozzarella cheese

2. Beat eggs in a large bowl. Add oil, salt and pepper.

“It’s magic, you’ll see.”

Her advice was even a play on words. This was my mother pushing me, for the hundredth time, to take care of my eyes. “Do Lasik! Go for it.” It wasn’t just her. Everyone seemed to think it was a good idea. On Monday it was my coworker, on Friday it was my husband, and yesterday it was the cleaning lady. Lasik (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) surgery seemed to be a recurring theme, and I was finding it difficult to ignore the unrelenting nudges. My eyesight was terrible. I was helpless without my contacts. The grope-for-the-glasses-till-you-knock-’em-off-the-nightstand type of helpless. And the fact that I was poking my fingers into my eyes twice daily didn’t thrill me either. The obvious solution (to everyone but me) was to do Lasik surgery. The “painless, riskless” procedure that ensures perfect vision. “Win-win,” they said.

126 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

November 27, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 127 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

“It’s a no-brainer,” they insisted. But not so fast, I thought. Because if the idea of poking my eyes daily disturbed me, the thought of cutting them open terrified me. Rationally, I knew that I was being silly. This tried and proven method apparently worked every time, with between 96 and 98 percent of patients ending up with 20/20 vision (over 40 percent end up with vision that is even better than 20/20!). Even more telling, since Lasik surgery has been introduced in 1999, there have been over 10 million procedures done, with hundreds of thousands of people undergoing it annually. (This year alone, there were 700,000 procedures performed!) The logic was irrefutable. But they say the road from the mind to the heart is the longest one still. I continued poking contacts, and my loved ones continued urging. Until one day, my safety was compromised. During a nocturnal visit to the sink that I foolishly braved without my glasses (because who could find their glasses without their glasses on?), I got a gash across my brow from the edge of the medicine chest left open. The night ended with six stitches being sewn into my forehead and a staunch commitment. Lasik it shall be. And Lasik it was.

MY LASIK EYE SURGERY JOURNAL Sunday, January 7, 2018, 6:00 p.m. I’m a candidate! I’m a candidate! Turns out, I’m the perfect candidate. I’m in the right age bracket, between ages 18 and 40. (The surgery is done on people aged 40 to 70, too, but they are no longer in the ideal bracket.) I’m nearsighted. The three eye imperfections most commonly and successfully operated on include myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. Other vision issues can be corrected with Lasik

128 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

dry eyes beats contacts any day. Double vision, glare and halos are experienced by 45 percent of patients for up to six months after surgery, especially during night hours. This may affect one’s ability to drive at night. Hmmm. Not ideal at all, but not bad enough to be a deal-breaker for me. There is a risk of under-correction or overcorrection if the surgeon removes too much or too little tissue. Since I’ll only sign up with a surgeon with an impeccable track record, I don’t think I’m at risk for this (just my way of sticking my head in the sand).

as well, but Lasik is performed with less frequency in those cases. I have no preexisting conditions. Baruch Hashem, I’m in perfect health otherwise, and I don’t have any of the disqualifying factors, like thin corneas or conjunctivitis.

Monday, January 8, 2018, 9:00 p.m. This research is killing me. My stress level has skyrocketed. But since I committed to going ahead with this, I’m not backing out. Though the percentages are on my side, the what ifs keep niggling in the back of my mind. I even learn the difference between side effects and complications. The summary of my research on side effects: Dry eyes are experienced by 30 percent of patients for up to three months after surgery. This symptom is easily treated with eye drops. Hmmm. I think I can deal with that. Temporary

The summary of my research on possible complications: Infection as a result of Lasik is experienced by less than 1 percent of patients. Less than 1 percent. To be repeated 20 times. Less than 1 percent of Lasik patients will get an infection, making it a truly unlikely scenario. Flap dislocation as a result of Lasik is also experienced by less than 1 percent of patients. Less than 1 percent. To be repeated 100 times. The tiny cut in the flap of the cornea does not get dislocated! Only in less than 1 percent of patients does this occur. Another statistical improbability. Blindness as a result of Lasik was not experienced by a single patient. Nobody, but nobody went blind from Lasik. Not even one person. I just had to find out, because to me, fiddling with the eyes and potential blindness go hand in hand. (Or should I say eye in eye?)

Wednesday, January 10, 2018, 10:00 p.m. Decisions, decisions, decisions. Since Lasik is considered elective surgery and is not covered by insurance, choosing a surgeon rests solely on my shoulders. After hours of research I’m still overwhelmed with the many factors. To organize my brain, I break it down to the four categories that will influ-

The logic was irrefutable. But they say the road from the mind to the heart is the longest one still. I continued poking contacts, and my loved ones continued urging.

all, we’re talking about the windows to my soul! When considering an invasive medical procedure like this, going with a novice is not something I’m willing to risk. I might even ask for a resume. Minimum experience: ten years. Price Because money always plays a role! The average cost for the procedure, I learn, is between $1,000 and $3,000 per eye. Gotta start a savings fund…

ence my final choice. Referrals The surgeon’s gotta be good. Obviously. My eyes are too precious to hand over to the lowest bidder. I’ll cross-examine patients and solicit the help of medical experts until I find the best surgeon in the field. I almost feel like I’m checking out a shidduch! “Does this surgeon eat on disposables…?” Experience Someone wet behind the ears just won’t cut it. After

Location Since my eyesight will be compromised right after surgery, I’ll need to be picked up after the fact. The question remains: How far am I willing to travel, and how far is my picker-upper willing to drive?

Tuesday, January 16, 2018, 4:05 p.m. He’s nice. A bit too clinical, yet patient enough to answer all of my questions — and I have lots of them. My eyes pass the examination; they are, baruch Hashem, in good health with no preexisting conditions. The doctor also measures my corneas and assesses their shape and eye pressure. And then come the instructions: For two weeks prior to surgery, contacts should not

A LOOK AT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STATISTICS As scarce as they are, a very small percentage of people do walk away from LASIK — with better vision, perhaps — but with possibly permanent side effects that affect their everyday life, sometimes even leading to job loss, disability and/or depression. While their vision may be 20/20, some suffer from new vision issues that can be debilitating: double vision, or even seeing things in triplicate, extreme light sensitivity, visual distortions, and dryness that is sometimes so intense that drops are needed on a constant basis to alleviate the soreness. Recently, a retired senior FDA official, Morris Waxler, blew the whistle on LASIK, bringing its safety into question and calling for it to be

130 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

“banned.” While LASIK is considered an almost risk-free procedure, and the FDA maintains that it’s safe, questions still remain about short- and longterm risks. And while the overwhelming majority of patients report satisfactory results, the “rare patient” who leaves the operating room with new complications does exist. One should properly weigh their options, study the complications that may arise, and consult competent medical authorities prior to making any medical decisions. When considering LASIK, it is of utmost importance, doctors stress, to undergo pre-op screening to ensure that a person is a good candidate for surgery.

be worn. My glasses in public?? Ouch! They’re a decade old! From two weeks prior to surgery, air travel should be avoided. Not that I could afford a ticket now that I’ll be paying out of pocket... Arrange for pickup, as vision post-op will be blurry and the pain meds cause grogginess. Yup, already know that. Will make arrangements.

Wednesday, January 31, 2018, 10:00 a.m. And the day has arrived. Somersaults, butterflies… it’s all happening within my bowels. Yup. I’m nervous. Very nervous. The first thing I notice when I walk into the waiting room is the bin of glasses to be donated to the needy. What a lovely concept! Every person who walks out of here with corrected vision drops their glasses into the bin for someone else to enjoy. I like that. The full waiting room puts me at ease. I’m not the only one doing this, but it does seem like I’m up first for the day, since my name is soon called. The doctor gives me some Valium to relax. It’s normal to feel anxious, they assure me. The calming meds are part of the process, it’s normal. Normal, normal, normal. Numbing drops are administered, and I try to relax in the examination chair while the nurse reads the laser setting numbers back to the doctor.

I’m told to focus on a single spot. An instrument is placed on my eye to secure it open. The suction ring is placed on next, and my vision dims. All this is normal, I tell myself. Normal, normal, normal. Thankfully, I can’t see what is happening next, but my hours of research give me an inkling of what is going on. Using a small razor, the surgeon cuts open a small flap on the eye, allowing access to the cornea. The preprogrammed laser beam is directed into the eye, and with each pulse, a tiny piece of the cornea is removed. It smells of burned hair. And just like that, twelve minutes later, it’s over. The flap is positioned back into place. No stitches are necessary; it will heal on its own. I’m given goggles to shield my eyes until they heal and to prevent my hands from the automatic scratch reflex. I am given eye drops with instructions to administer the medication every few hours for the first few days. No cosmetics in the area and no strenuous activity. I listen obediently. My vision is blurry, and I ask the receptionist to call a cab. By the time I sit into the car, my vision has further blurred. I arrive home and head straight to bed with my eye shields on. I wake up three hours later to stinging, burning and itching. I try relaxing to soft music, and eventually, I fall back asleep. The next morning the pain is gone, but I find it hard to face the light, so I opt to keep the goggles on. I take it easy all day, administering drops periodically and resisting the urge to scratch.

Friday, February 2, 2018 Though my eyes are still swollen and terribly dry, my surgeon pronounces the surgery a success at my follow-up visit. My vision has not cleared up yet, but that may take up to three months. *****

Thankfully, I can’t see what is happening next, but my hours of research give me an inkling of what is going on.

132 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

All that transpired almost two years ago. At present, it’s all but a distant memory. My vision is perfect, and the side effects are almost all gone! I say almost because I still experience the annoyance of the glare from cars at night. But that’s a small price to pay for my blessed vision.

She was all of three years old and irresistibly adorable. When I’d tell her a story or converse with her, she’d cock her head to the side with a half-smile, bright blue eyes locked in mine from that endearing angle. It made me smile. And it made me vaguely uneasy. So vaguely that it barely flitted on my conscious mind. 138 / THE MONSEY VIEW

It wasn’t until her teacher called me that I woke up from my denial-induced stupor and realized that something really was going on. “Um, Mrs. Shapiro, Raizy is just adorable. She’s a pleasure to teach. I’m wondering… did you notice that her left eye turns inward?” Yes, I agreed, the fact dawning on me. Something was up with her eye. I was so appreciative (and more than a little sheepish) that a teacher many years my junior was the one to open my eyes. What did I know? Neither I, nor any of my older children, had ever owned a pair of glasses. Raizy was sitting in the ophthalmologist’s chair just a week later, kicking and screaming, and fighting the nurse who was trying to administer the eye drops that would expand her pupils so her eyes could be measured to determine the problem. A few hours later we had a verdict and a prescription. Strabismus, the doctor said, due to hyperopia. It took a few minutes for me to know that this meant that Raizy suffered from a misaligned eye due to farsightedness, which had led to amblyopia — a lazy eye. Her brain had decided to circumvent the bother of straining her eye with compromised vision, ignoring its input and putting it on vacation. Together with the prescription — “Fill it as soon as possible,” the doctor cautioned. “We want to nip this in the bud.” — the doctor held up a few patches. Raizy was to wear a patch for two hours each day, and her eyeglasses throughout the day. My daughter is adorable, but docile she’s not. There’s so much steel in her that I seriously feared how she would take to these glasses that would force her eye to work harder than it ever did and agree to wear the itchy, sweaty patches. But, of course, I would give this my best shot. My child’s vision depended on it.

Let’s Patch Things Up The pink frames had looked a lot cuter before the thick magnifying lenses had been inserted, but I enthused about how adorable it was nonetheless, knowing full well the path to my girl’s heart. Her older siblings chimed in, and Raizy glowed behind the frames. In the pharmacy, we carefully studied the selection of patches, finally settling on a glittery set; it had the least pink, but the most girly designs — and glitter! Raizy chose the nicest one, which we carefully and slowly placed over her eye. “But I can’t see!” she protested. Tough love, I told myself, staying firm. “We want your eye to be strong,” I told Raizy, once and twice and three times. I was determined to make this work. “Look, here’s a path to the ice cream truck!” I showed off my attempt at (nonexistent) artistic skills. “Every day you’ll fill in one square of this ice-cream truck chart, and after seven

Are Prisms for Everyone? Mrs. Klein was quite chagrined when she started noticing her son’s eyes crossing. They had already done so much, with his having had surgery for exotropia — a form of strabismus, in which both of his eyes turned outward. And now that his eyes had started turning inward, they were at a loss. They consulted an out-of-town doctor who frightened them, telling them that she couldn’t promise his eyes would get better. She also criticized them for choosing to go ahead with the surgery, blaming the issue on that. The doctor prescribed prism glasses and vision therapy twice a week — and they’d have to travel close to an hour away for each cash-only session. It was disheartening to invest all that time and money into something whose effectiveness was in question. When a neighbor suggested that they take their son to London, they decided to give it a shot. Once there, the doctor pronounced his eyes healthy. The surgery had corrected the first problem, he said, and he explained that this new issue was accommodative esotropia — the eye was crossing because of farsightedness. All her son needed was a prescription to address that; he didn’t need the prisms — which would only be harmful — nor the vision therapy. And that is what they did. The child took beautifully to the new prescription, and a great change was seen both in his appearance and in his performance. Mr. Klein, on the other hand, who had never found a satisfactory solution to his trouble with vision, did receive a prescription for prism glasses at that same appointment, and it has changed his life. Prisms, where needed, can correct double vision, cure muscle conditions and enhance vision. But a wrong prescription of prisms can cause a lot of trouble.

days — only one week! — we’re gonna get you an ice cream. With sprinkles!” (Eventually, she got one.) Two weeks later, I hung a bag of exciting prizes from the light fixture in her room, and every time she’d successfully wear her patch for two hours, she’d be lifted high up to choose a prize. (After she got her hands on the two coveted prizes, the bag lost its appeal.) I drew a big tree with patch-shaped leaves where she’d be able to stick on her used patches in exchange for rewards. (I found the tree beautifully complete with never-worn patches the next day.) I took her to the park to distract her, to the toy store to bribe her. And Bubby (bless her) jumped into the picture too, promising treats only bubbies can. Day by day, week by week, we pushed on. Some days she’d wear the patch for 15 minutes, some days she’d simply refuse to wear it. Some days she’d wear it, but lift the flap and peek out whenever she needed to focus. And on some rare days, few and far between, we clocked in at two hours. And her glasses — that was a struggle of its own. Every morning (and afternoon and evening), we launched the great, big who-can-findthe-glasses hunt. One day it stayed at school. Another day on the bus. Under the bed. In the toy box. In the hamper! In the cabinet. In a shopping bag. But somehow, miraculously, it would always reemerge. I was frustrated with the struggle, yes, but I did not blame my little girl one tiny bit. The patches were uncomfortable (even if they were cotton), it was disconcerting to walk around halfseeing, and she was not old enough to understand the ramifications. And it kept her indoors; her little three-year-old ego would not allow herself to become a public spectacle. And just to step into her world, I placed a patch over my eye one day for three minutes. I nearly went berserk — and I have 20/20 vision in both eyes. With Raizy sensing my sheer desperation, patching turned into a mighty power struggle. Mommy doesn’t want to give me the candy? Off goes the patch… Want me to wear the patch? Well, these are my terms… The follow-up visit was disappointing. There were signs of improvement, but they were very, very slight. It disheartened me. And it broke Raizy. (“But, Ma, you said maybe I won’t have to wear my patch anymore!”) The doctor didn’t really know why Raizy was still not wearing her glasses consistently, and she didn’t really care about my parenting struggles: “Two hours a day. Don’t skip even a single day. You don’t want her to lose her sight in that eye.”

As the weeks rolled by, the patching fell to the wayside. There were half-hearted attempts here and there, new charts, and the purchase of a pirate-style cover for the glasses that also came right off. At the next visit, the doctor suggested trying drops to blur the good eye. But he didn’t push it, and that made me doubtful… I filled the prescription, kept that little bottle in the cabinet, and that’s where it stayed.

Shedding Some Light “I’m thrilled with Dr. Silber,” my friend told me. “My daughter’s eyes are perfect. She gave me a hard time with the patching, but her lazy eye got corrected simply with the right prescription.” When I heard another recommendation, I made an appointment, hopeful for an eye-opening experience.

Every morning (and afternoon and evening) we launched the great, big whocan-find-the-glasses hunt. I was immediately taken by the doctor’s warmth, by the spirit in the office, by the way he made my daughter’s visit a fun, unthreatening one. But I was disappointed that he approved the original prescription. “It’s good. It’s perfect, in fact. I’d have prescribed the same thing.” He considered for a moment. “Next time around, I’ll adjust it a drop, but if this were my daughter, I wouldn’t fill the new prescription yet.” So why wasn’t she wearing her glasses? Why was I constantly running after her with them? What he next showed me made me hopeful. “Your daughter doesn’t like the patch, and frankly, I don’t blame her. It’s uncomfortable, it makes her self-conscious, and when she wears it, it’s almost as if she’s groping in the dark. Let’s try this…” He held up a little square card. On its back was a “foil” that looked just like contact paper. He traced the lens on the paper, cut it out and then peeled off the occlusion foil that he explained filters out the light, fogging up the vision in the good eye while still letting light through. “This is not only more physically comfortable; it is almost invisible, so it doesn’t pose the social issue patches do. You can use each foil about 50

times. Just keep it on a very clean surface like a mirror or window.” The doctor stuck the foil onto the glasses. “Three hours a day, and she can have Shabbos off.” Three hours. That was almost the entire time from when Raizy came home from school until bathtime! Nevertheless, it was a novelty at first, and the difference was amazing. My daughter wore the foils much more dutifully, delighting in sharing with me that nobody even realized she was wearing anything. She even dared to go outside to play. Things, while not perfect, were looking up. But the patches… clear and slippery, they were ever so elusive! Mirror, mirror on the wall, Why do my patches always fall? My toddler loved picking them off the glass. And as many times as I’d tell my cleaning lady not to touch them, they’d disappear when she cleaned any surface — be it mirror, window or oven door. I was constantly cutting new ones, ordering new bundles (at $7.50 per foil with three weeks shipping time...). And always, always stuck on Shabbos without one (we had obviously used up our off days way before Shabbos…) But still, overall, it was happening. After five months, back to the doc we went and were delighted to hear that there was a marked improvement in her vision. And I wasn’t surprised, for even I saw that her eye was turning in much less. But the glasses were still not good, even after I had already filled the “slightly adjusted” prescription.

I was still looking for them constantly, bringing them to Raizy, cajoling her to wear them. I became a weekly visitor to her Pre-1-A classroom to drop off the glasses that were left at home. And then, one day, we lost the glasses, this time, it seemed, for good. And Raizy, being Raizy, refused to wear the spare “baby glasses.” Exhausted from this long battle, I didn’t feel like investing more time and money and energy in a pair of glasses that my daughter was obviously not comfortable wearing.

Through a New Prism Dr. Davis had been mentioned to me by several people, but when everyone was suddenly pushing me for prisms in a short period of time, I took it as a wink from Heaven and made an appointment. He did not use kid gloves, this doctor. “You can’t let a child do whatever she wants. You gotta teach her who’s the boss when she’s still young!” he replied in response to the tale of my failed patching attempts, unimpressed with the impossible mission I’d been given. And of course… “She’s getting older; you’ve wasted a

A Ray of Sunlight Shmuely’s optical resume was quite colorful by the time he found himself in the office of yet another new specialist. He’d run the gamut from a regular prescription to bifocals to prisms to adjusting his prescription numerous times by the time he found himself sitting in another exam chair, shaking his head, telling the doctor that he couldn’t see through the phoropter. Shmuely watched with interest as the doctor pulled out a yellow film and slipped it into the machine. “Yes! Much better!” he said, excited. “My double vision is gone!” As the doctor launched into a speech about the options of tinting his glasses yellow, or at least filling a separate yellow-tinted prescription for indoors if he preferred it that way, Shmuely was immediately brought back to some time years back. He was in third grade, and his rebbi had given him a pair of yellow glasses at the Purim mesibah. Oh, how he loved wearing those glasses! “I see so much better when I wear them,” he told his Mommy, his Tatty, his older siblings — all the big people who tried to persuade him to stop acting funny and put the glasses away. They attributed his behavior to the excitement of getting a prize from his rebbi. Had they actually taken him seriously, perhaps Shmuely would have been a lot more familiar with the Gemara than he was now at the age of fifteen.

lot of precious time!” But a balm to my mothers’ guilt also followed when the doctor shared that he isn’t a believer of patching for extended periods. While it can force the eye back into place, correcting the vision and definitely addressing the cosmetic aspects, according to him, it doesn’t train the two eyes to work in tandem, compromising 3D vision. Raizy was enthralled by Dr. Davis and his tricks and sat happily as her eyes were measured and examined — and did I mention there were no drops and the ensuing wait for the medication to take effect? The doctor’s goal was to prescribe a prism that would awaken the amblyopic eye from its slumber and force it to focus, while also improving 3D vision. For the first time, I felt that a doctor had an answer, a new spin. That he would finally address an underlying issue that we’ve been missing. My daughter once again chose a frame, and a week later we were called to have it fitted. She came home, a new pair of glasses perched on her nose. And that is where her glasses stayed. And stayed. And stayed. Over the next few months, I marveled that my daughter was reaching for her glasses first thing in the morning — that instead of my running after her with them, she was keeping it on hand! Finally, a working prescription! I relaxed. The glasses were doing their job. And best of all, no patching. No nudging. Her eyes, on the other hand, even through the glasses, were obviously not aligned. At the follow-up, the doctor was pleased with my daughter’s obvious affinity to her glasses, but the lazy eye was another story. “I see an improvement with

Skeptical About Spectacles Chevy Parnes was struggling in school. Kriah was a challenge; she’d skip over entire words when trying to read, and this difficulty hindered her studies in every subject. The staff in school thought it might be a vision issue, and they recommended that Chevy’s eyes be examined. After hours spent in research, the Parneses made the decision to travel to London for a prescription for prism lenses. Chevy came home fitted with her new glasses, and she was unrecognizable. Her reading picked up. Her studies picked up. She was a new kid! This utopia lasted for three months. That’s when Chevy started complaining about headaches and that her eyes were bothering her again. She stopped wearing the glasses, claiming she saw even better without the glasses! Her parents were beside themselves. They made an appointment at a local specialist, who diagnosed the issue as alternating esotropia, where the two eyes take “turns” being fixed in place. She explained that Chevy’s brain had not adapted to the prisms, and therefore her eyes were not working in tandem. She prescribed vision therapy to correct the muscles in both eyes. The Parneses were skeptical, but they threw themselves into the therapy regimen, and the improvement, while slow, was steady — and lasting. The process took over a year, but their daughter now enjoys perfect vision even without a pair of glasses.

Mommy doesn’t want to give me the candy? Off goes the patch… the lazy eye, but it’s very slight. It’s not surprising, being that this has not been properly dealt with as soon as the amblyopia was detected. We still have to give this time before we see real results.” However, he did explain that there are different occlusion techniques he employs when the prisms alone don’t prove effective enough in prodding the lazy eye into motion. And out he took a roll of frosted Scotch tape and proceeded to cover one lens with strips, showing me how doubling it, or leaving spaces, changes the occlusion intensity. Occlusion foils simplified, I realized with a sinking feeling. Were we back to the patching? Then the doctor said, “Fifteen minutes per day. Not a minute longer. We want to encourage the two eyes to work together and to improve 3D vision,” which through various tests he saw was almost not happening. “Use Scotch tape — it’s disposable! We want a lot of handeye coordination in these fifteen minutes. Keep her busy. And if you skip a day, don’t worry about it, as long as you do it often enough.” Doable enough, I thought (hoped). So now, each day after school, when my daughter marches in, I greet her with a hug, a snack — and a roll of frosted Scotch tape. There’s a variety of activities we try to do: crafts, aqua beads, Legos, sticker activities, beading... Should I say it happens every day? First grade homework and the later schedule and all the things I need to cram into one short, dark afternoon sometimes make even these fifteen minutes an insurmountable task. Should I say it lasts fifteen minutes all the time? Not as long as my little queen reigns. But we try. Bit by bit. Minute by minute. Day by day. And we daven. As my daughter gets older, and the clock keeps ticking, there’s a lot I can berate myself for. But an honest look reveals that I have sincerely tried my best within my limited knowledge and my limited control. As an added hishtadlus, I’ve taken on something small. Inspired by a wonderful woman I know, I recite kapitel “ayin” (for “eye”) each day. I’d love to be able to say that her lazy eye is healed, but while her eyesight is improving, there’s still a way to go. So I humbly submit to the One Who restores vision, because my most strenuous efforts cannot bring about what He can do in the blink of an eye. Six-year-old Chavi was playing Chutes and Ladders with her neighbors when the die she tossed landed to show three little dots. 150 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

“Red,” she called, and then moved three paces. Her friends looked at her quizzically, “Red?” “Three,” she clarified, “you know, three, like red.” They had no idea what she was talking about. From her end, Chavi was equally stymied by their reaction. Didn’t every number “come” with a color? She hadn’t understood her mother’s confusion, either, when she shared how excited she was to be turning seven “because pink is my favorite color!” Or the odd looks she’d gotten when she confessed that spelling tests were easy “because the colors don’t change.” She was in the ninth grade when she first realized she was different. Her science teacher had handed out an unconventional quiz, where the sheet of paper had a list of letters. The “quiz” required each student to write down a color for each one. After filling out their answers, the papers had been collected, and the girls promptly forgot all about it. A month later, the teacher handed out a similar sheet, and once again, asked the girls to write down a color for each letter. Naturally, most girls provided entirely new answers. For Chavi, though, the answers were the same as before. In fact, she was surprised to discover that the others’ answers weren’t. After all, how could the color of a letter change? It was then that her teacher taught the class about

a unique sensory phenomenon, and “Chavi, the synesthete,” was the reluctant mascot of the day. Synesthesia is an infinitely fascinating subject. It is also rather rare and can manifest itself in many forms. Chavi’s innovative teacher was rather lucky to find a student with grapheme-color synesthesia, a rare condition where the perception of letters and numbers are associated with the experience of colors.

COLOR ME CONFUSED It is likely in kindergarten that most students encounter their first lesson on the senses: taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing. It is a straightforward lesson, for most. There’s not much to be confused about — unless you are one of the few who experience the synesthetic crossing of the wires. Synesthesia, in simplest terms, is a neurological condition that causes the brain to send messages to several senses at once. Synesthetes might see music, taste words or smell colors. To be fair, they are still hearing the music, reading the words and seeing the colors, but there is an added dimension to their experience. What is noteworthy is that the experience is involuntary — synesthetes don’t consciously decide to have the sensation or feeling; it seems that much the same way that scent would trigger your olfactory nerves, for a synesthete, it might also target the optic nerve or auditory system. However, while these additional dimensions are experienced, they typically occur in the synesthete’s “mind’s eye,” with the person quite aware that the sound or color is exclusively internal.

Synesthesia was first written about more than two hundred years ago. In 1812, an Austrian doctor

Many synesthetes still today are not yet aware of their extraordinariness. Perhaps with this sample list of the more common versions of synesthesia, some readers will recognize their amazing gift! Discovering that our perception of the world is not uniquely our own might feel a tad disconcerting — yet can be thrilling.

Grapheme-color synesthesia

Ordinal-linguistic personification

Lexical-gustatory synesthesia

Grapheme-color synesthesia is the most common type by far, claiming somewhere around 60 percent of synesthetes. People with this version of synesthesia see colors surrounding letters and numbers. (This has helped many a synesthete ace their spelling tests in school!)

This is where ordered sequences, like numbers, letters or days of the week all have particular personalities, genders and even appearances. Monday might be an irritable young guy wearing a slumpy sweatshirt, while Tuesday might be a gregarious older woman who talks too much. The number five might be a little girl, but six — an older boy.

Experienced by less than 0.2 percent of the population, this seems to be among the rarest forms of synesthesia. With their associations between words and tastes, synesthetes with this condition find conversations cause a flow of tastes across their tongue. Some feel the texture or temperature as well.

It might sound intriguing at first, but these strange associations often lead to uncomfortable preferences that can hinder productivity and make life unnecessarily difficult at times.

The one negative form of synesthesia, misophonia, which translates to “hatred of sound,” occurs when auditory stimuli triggers strong negative emotions like disgust and anger. The most typical ones are when people have a strong adverse response to the sounds of others eating or breathing.

Chromesthesia Chromesthesia, most commonly encountered among musicians and singers, gives the brain a visual musical experience. This “skill,” if you will, has helped many composers construct entire compositions in their minds. It has also helped singers stay perfectly (or close to perfectly) on pitch.

Mirror-touch synesthesia Imagine watching someone touch their chin, and somehow feeling as if you had just touched your own chin. That is mirror-touch synesthesia — feeling the same sensation as another person. Some will insist that this is merely a well-developed sense of empathy, but for those with this condition, the physical experience can feel all too real.

154 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Number-form synesthesia First documented by prolific researcher Sir Francis Galton more than a century ago, this is where numbers, dates and sometimes concepts automatically appear in the mind as mental maps — and these maps are typically individual to the synesthete. This form of synesthesia is assumed to result from the close proximity of two areas in the brain — the ones that process visual object recognition and number/spatial representation.

Misophonia

There are other variations, too, like the person who hears music when he looks at paintings, or the one who physically experiences flavors (“lemon is sharp-edged, but garlic is round”). The above is but a fraction of the full. Newer studies have determined that there are more than the previously assumed 65 types — with some insisting that the true number of synesthetic variations hovers around 150.

named Georg Sachs first documented what he recognized as an unusual propensity to see letters and numbers in distinct hues. He knew he shared this odd trait with his sister, but he had yet to encounter anyone else with this condition. Over the years many other personalities, some quite popular, spoke about the phenomenon. Famous composer Franz Liszt (1811–1886) lived with chromesthesia (see sidebar), and his orchestra got used to peculiar remarks like, “O please, gentlemen, a little bluer, if you please! This tone type requires it!” Or, “That is a deep violet, please, depend on it! Not so rose!” Apparently, the orchestra initially thought Liszt was just being eccentric, but they soon realized he really was seeing colors in the sounds. Things didn’t go as smoothly for all synesthetes. Van Gogh, who had chromesthesia as well, had a rather unpleasant time of it when he started piano lessons in 1885. His teacher, annoyed with the way he associated different notes with specific colors, was convinced that this was a sign of insanity and promptly stopped the lessons. In more recent years, many neurologists, poets and novelists have analyzed and written about the colors they see, the flavors they taste, and the sensations they experience — even when that particular sense was not being tickled. In Hashem’s fascinating world, it is always thrilling to learn that for all we’ve already discovered, we have yet to scratch the surface. Our brains are mammoth labyrinths of mystery, the depths of which scientists will likely forever fail to fully fathom. Synesthesia is one such conundrum that has neurologists stymied. Enthralled, to be sure, but still left scratching their heads.

UNCERTAIN ORIGINS Some researchers are under the impression that all children are born with synesthesia, and societal pressure to conform forces them to outgrow it. This theory has been studied at length and mostly debunked; society is not to blame for the shift. There does, though, seem to be a connection between synesthetes and little children in that both of their senses

are overconnected (or, as others insist, underdeveloped). As children’s brains mature, the unneeded connections are pruned away, and therefore, some who might have experienced synesthesia as kids no longer do so as adults. Yet the actual physiological cause of synesthesia continues to elude researchers — as does its cure. For all their advances in neurology, studies in the past century have not yielded anything conclusive on the subject.

Our brains are mammoth labyrinths of mystery, the depths of which scientists will likely forever fail to fully fathom.

REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE Even with its cause unknown, this medical marvel has been boiled down to some fascinating facts: Synesthesia is typically an innate, inborn conflation of the senses. In some rare cases, it might be the result of a head injury or the response to lost senses, but in most instances, it presents itself before a child is four years old. There seems to be a strong genetic link, as synesthesia tends to run in families. In one study in Cambridge University’s Department of Experimental Psychology, it was determined that men with synesthesia pass it on to their daughters at the rate of 100 percent, and mothers to their sons at a rate of 50 percent. (However, even when multiple family members are themselves synesthetes, they do not necessarily have the same type, and even those who have the same version, rarely have the same experience, i.e., identical color association.) Synesthetes are generally of normal or above-average intelligence. And though scientists often point out that “miswiring” seems to cause the condition, it rarely, if ever, affects intellect. As a matter of fact, synesthetes often have enhanced perception, better memory and prolific creativity. In a strange discovery that has yet to be adequately explained, it seems the statistical probability of a synesthete being left-handed is greater than in the general

156 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

population. Some insist this ties into synesthetes, like many left-handed people, being creatives.

WILD NUMBERS Synesthesia was first thought to be extremely rare, but as awareness has grown, and more individuals have discovered that their experience isn’t the norm, the statistics have drastically changed. As it turns out, despite its extraordinary nature, synesthesia is said to affect up to 4 percent of the population. Though still assumed to be more prevalent in females, some now wonder whether this is simply because women tend to talk a lot more about their feelings and experiences. Over the past decade, as more men learned about synesthesia and recognized themselves in the descriptions, the gender gap seemed to narrow. Another factor to consider is our society’s newly born propensity to celebrate our differences. In the past, individuals with synesthesia felt driven to silence after being derided for describing sensory connections they had yet to realize were atypical. As more individuals have taken to talking about their own oddities, much is being discovered on the subject.

SEE WHAT I’M SAYING? For some, synesthesia can be isolating. Life is best lived as a shared experience, so a synesthete expressing appreciation for “the beautiful colors” in music or poetry can feel lonely when mocked or misunderstood. Clearly aware of that elusive “more,” a synesthete might often feel exasperated when her audience can’t appreciate or understand. The more prevalent complaint, though, is sensory overload. As a result, many synesthetes suffers from headaches, nausea, and most commonly, migraines. But while scientists seem to be of the impression that this neurological condition is a mistake and thus in need of fixing, the vast majority of those “afflicted” with the diagnosis don’t seem to be all that desperate for a cure. Most synesthetes relate to their synesthesia as we do to all of our senses — they believe it enhances the experiences of everyday life. And why would anyone forgo being serenaded by a transcendent symphony when gazing at the setting sun?

HISTORY

FUTURE

While the early origins of eyeglasses remain unclear, most researchers agree that the first reading glasses were introduced in the 13th century, when folks in Venice began connecting two reading stones with a hinge, enabling the wearer to balance the stones on his nose. As this neat little invention spread around the globe, various changes were made for the better. A Spanish eyeglass manufacturer introduced silk ribbons that tied to the lenses and could be secured to the wearer’s ears. Then the Chinese upgraded the ribbons by adding little weights that enabled the eyeglasses to remain in place without having to be tied at the ear. One step closer to the eyeglasses we know!

Eyeglasses of the future differ from the glasses of today not only in their makeup (3D-printed glasses, anyone?), but also in the purposes they’ll serve. One new invention in the works is glasses that are enabled with “auto-focus,” a function that causes the lens to change prescriptions based on the wearer. More up-and-coming products include eyeglasses that repair color blindness, as well as bifocals that automatically adjust using liquid within the lens.

TYPES OF GLASSES CORRECTIVE GLASSES

are used to alleviate the symptoms of various eye defects. These glasses bend the light entering the eye using a refractive index within the lens. Depending on the needs and condition of the wearer’s eyes, a single pair of glasses may be equipped with one, two, or even three refractive indices. 3D GLASSES

use a technique called polarization to create an illusion of depth, causing the wearer to view flat images as though they are multi-dimensional. 3D glasses can be used when viewing photos, books and animations. SUNGLASSES

filter out ultraviolet rays, keeping the viewer’s eyes safe from the sun while enabling them to see in bright light without squinting. For ultimate protection, sunglasses should block both UVA and UVB rays. SAFETY GLASSES

protect the wearer’s eyes from harmful substances and debris. These glasses differ in their makeup, depending on the wearer’s needs. Construction and factory workers, lab technicians, astronauts, surgeons, and welders are but a few examples of people who wear glasses to protect their eyes from occupational hazards.

FUN FACTS MOST EXPENSIVE GLASSES

Whereas most people attribute the high cost of eyeglasses to the effort entailed in forming a prescriptive lens, the world’s most expensive glasses are not corrective at all! At an estimated $408,000, the Chopard De Rigo sunglasses are debatably the most expensive pair of eyewear in the world. Made with 24-karat gold and 51 diamonds of 4 carats each, these glasses are a pair you wouldn’t want to lose! OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD GLASSES

Custom eyewear was designed for the crew of Apollo 11 in advance of their landing on the moon. Since they traveled in such close proximity to the sun, their eyes required advanced protection, the likes of which had never been needed before. Today, the features that were developed for the astronauts are used to protect the eyes of pilots in the Air Force. QUADRUPLY CORRECTED

Rafael Viñoly is a world-famous architectural master. What he’s less known for is his habit of wearing up to four pairs of glasses at a time! Yes, Viñoly typically sports four identical sets of frames, though each pair contains a unique lens. If you ask him, he’ll offer a perfectly acceptable justification — one pair is for distance, one is for piano, one is for reading and once is for drafting. However, this hasn’t stopped Viñoly’s glasses from becoming an inside joke among architects around the world.

little bundle swaddled in pink lies peacefully in your stroller. She touches the heart of everyone who sees her. Is she immune to Ayin Horah? You’d think that yes. Obviously, no one is jealous of her.

Here’s the surprise.

YOUR HOUSE IS SECURED-HELP SECURE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD!

An Ayin Horah can be caused by a “Wow!” Admiring wonderment can bring on an Ayin Horah, just the same as jealousy can. So yes. It can definitely be that your little bundle wrapped in pink is affected by Ayin Horah. It can be, but it doesn’t have to be.

DO YOU HAVE A VIDEO CAMERA OR SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM INSTALLED OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS?

.If you are going through a rough time with a child, or, if your child is in the spotlight, it would be worthwhile to check if he or she has been affected by an Ayin Horah. Otherwise, there is no reason for concern.

CHAVERIM NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Einy Yeshuah offers membership to both adults and children as well as to entire families, affording you the peace of mind that an Ayin Horah won’t adversly impact your family.

The more cameras we know about, the higher the chance of tracking and finding lost or stolen items, missing kids, or suspicious persons. Join the network of listed cameras to help keep our streets safe!

HOW IT WORKS: •

Register your address on the List

If an emergency occurs in your neighborhood, we will contact you for video footage of the specific time we need.

Help us catch the suspect while maintaining your privacy!
