Give them another source of blessing. Make a Pidyon Nefesh donation for each member of your family. On a day steeped in tradition, you’ll be fulfilling the time-honored minhag of Pidyon Nefesh, and giving your children a powerful zechus they will carry into the holiest day of the year – as you support thousands of orphans who have no one to bless them this Erev Yom Kippur.

It’s the reputation we’re proud of, and the process you trust. Since 1950, the Mendlowitz family has been providing the highest level of kashrus standards in meat. R’ Shimon Mendlowitz has developed a unique nikkur protocol that conforms to all minhagim and chumros. Our reputation for mevinus in nikkur and melicha has spread throughout the world, making us the go-to source for rabbanim, kashrus agencies and mashgiach training. Our high quality Black Angus beef is sourced from one trusted location here in the USA, carefully slaughtered under the constant supervision of our private shochet, and kashered in-house here in Monsey. And because every cut comes from the same trusted source, you know you can rely on our superb quality...

(Re: The Millions of the Mega-Rich, Issue 216) After allowing myself to get lost in a few moments of fanciful wishing for the wealth discussed in a previous issue, I was grateful to be living a modest, albeit far more meaningful, life. For all its allure, that kind of money can never buy happiness. That said, I’d do well to remember that we can’t write off money as the root of all evil. To be fair, the obsessive pursuit of the almighty dollar has led to the downfall and depravity of many, but there is so much good that money can do. There’s a beautiful story told about a young chassid of Beis Aharon of Karlin that is quite fitting for this time of year — even though our weather is quite different from what they had there. One year in Karlin the snow came early, right in the middle of the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah. Being that the town suffered from frequent acts of anti-Semitism, the townspeople had taken to building their sukkahs indoors, and they would remove their roofs for yom tov. In the days leading up to Sukkos, a young chassid braved the elements. As the snow came down on top of his Rebbe’s sukkah, he made sure to immediately clear it away. On Erev Sukkos, when all of Karlin was bemoaning the fact that their roofs were coated in ice, the chassid put on the s’chach and presented the Beis Aharon with a kosher sukkah. Overcome with joy at this precious gift, the Rebbe offered this young man a choice of rewards. He could opt to sit next to his Rebbe in Olam Haba, or he could choose untold wealth in Olam Hazeh. He

chose the money. Some would find that choice somewhat shallow and materialistic, but it can be argued that this young man had his priorities straight. For the rest of his long life, he was the benevolent supporter of the town’s poor. While the beis medrash bench was sufficient for his nightly repose, when it came to another Yid, he was always at the ready to assist financially. Instead of choosing a reward that would benefit only him, he opted for the bracha that would enhance far more lives. And who’s to say that the Gan Eden he earned wasn’t even bigger than the one he was originally promised? It is absolutely true that as a one-tracked pursuit, great wealth can never buy happiness. But let’s not denigrate money either. When used wisely, money can do so much good. It can even buy Olam Haba. Tziri Hershkovitz

A PERSONAL TRIBUTE (Re: A Pediatrician Who Loved His Patients, Issue 216) Thank you so much for your amazing magazine. It is impressive to see your many original ideas on a weekly basis. You truly have a great zechus by providing us with interesting and kosher information that’s a pleasure to read. In tribute to Dr. Gorelick, I would like to share our own personal experience. About 35 years ago, on Pesach, my brother was born with a collapsed lung, and he needed to be transferred to Columbia Hospital as soon as possible. Dr. Gorelick was the baby’s doctor, and with great devotion he helped with stabilizing my brother and having him transferred. He then stayed in the hospital on yom tov from 5:00 p.m. until

12:00 a.m. When things were finally looking better, he told my mother, “You can start cooking for the bris.” For many years, my brother and I would see Dr. Gorelick for our routine health care visits. With his trademark smile, he always gave us his full attention, handing us little prizes and stickers and asking us about the parsha and who our teachers and rebbis were. It was a treat to go to the doctor! May his family find comfort, knowing that he’s helped so many people in their time of need. Mrs. S. P.S. A while ago, you’ve written about safety and sidewalks in Monsey. I am not an askan, but I do have a suggestion, and perhaps someone can bring this to fruition to benefit the many pedestrians in Monsey. Over many highways there are bridges for pedestrians to cross over (with steps leading to a bridge over the road, followed by steps on the other side), and some even have elevators for strollers and wheelchairs. I think if a pedestrian bridge would be constructed over Route 59, so many people would be able to cross without fear. It would make a world of a difference to all of us waiting (forever) to cross. Gmar chasimah tovah.

YOUR VOICE NOTES FROM A SHIVAH HOUSE In light of reading the eye-opening brochure sent around by Misaskim, I’d like

to share a postscript with my favorite weekly, may it never be relevant. Having experienced the untimely loss of my father-in-law this year, I’d like to share some tips on visiting a shivah house. Being menachem avel is so sad and uncomfortable, yet as the wonderful, caring people we are, we extend ourselves. Perhaps a change of perspective is all we need to be a true comfort to the aveilim. Instead of focusing on how to minimize our own discomfort, let’s think of only the avel and take our cues from her/ him. Remember that there is no magic formula to take the pain away. Only the Avi yesomim v’Dayan almanos can truly understand and completely comfort. Here are some tips for being menachem avel. • It is customary to speak only after the avel has spoken, so let the mourner lead and take it from there. Don’t be afraid of silence; your presence and quiet comfort mean more than you can imagine. • Mention something special about the niftar if you can, be it a middah, a story or a life lesson you’ve learned from him/her. • Speak less rather than say the wrong thing. In one attempt to comfort my mother-in-law, a woman enthused that it was a chesed that my shver was not sick for a long time. “It was so good that he didn’t have to mitche zich for years!” • Don’t ask for details on the niftar’s circumstances of passing, be

74 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 3, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

it illness, accident, etc. It is wrenching for the avel to rehash the minutiae of the loss hundreds of times throughout the shivah week. And of course, do not share your opinion on which doctor/specialist should have been consulted! • A shivah house is a sad place, yes. But visitors need not come armed with their own tales of woe, just to commiserate. As some of my mother-in-law’s visitors tearfully recounted their own families’ brushes with death, it nearly seemed as if they were the ones sitting shivah! • In a crowded shivah house, do not affront the aveilim with the echoes of your lighthearted conversation with the friend/acquaintance you’ve met there. Wait quietly and respectfully until it is your turn to be menachem avel. • Think again and again before you speak! The amount of faux pas made in shivah houses is overwhelming. Things like, “I’m crying more than you!” should never be said. Likewise, “Why didn’t you let me know he was sick?” Rather err on the side of caution and offer quiet comfort. The most fitting nichum aveilim to my shvigger was actually made by the neighborhood UPS driver! He came up to the house and simply said, “I’m so sorry for your loss, Mrs. G. Your husband was a great man.” May all of Klal Yisroel be inscribed in the sefer chaim tovim, and may we never need to make use of these tips! C.G.

Parshas

Vayeilech By: Malka Schneps

“Good Shabbos! Please come in!” said Rabbi Fein to his Shabbos guest, Shimon Weinberg. Shimon was the CEO of a large corporation and a guest in Rabbi Fein’s shul. “Thank you so much for having me,” said Shimon. Rabbi and Rebbetzin Fein, the Fein children, and Shimon all sat down to eat the Shabbos seudah. As Rebbetzin Fein brought in the cholent, Rabbi Fein turned to speak with Shimon. “Tell me, Shimon, how did you become CEO? From what I understand, you started out as a cashier in one of your company’s stores. You must have quite a story to tell!” “Indeed I do, and it’s a story I enjoy telling!” Shimon smiled. “And I’m sure I will enjoy hearing it,” Rabbi Fein replied as he helped himself to a slice of kugel. “I started out working at the cash register, like you said. But I never saw myself as a cashier — though I didn’t see myself as a CEO yet, either, at that point. I just decided that no matter what my job was, I would give it 100 percent.” Shimon took a sip of water, and then continued. “I had two rules for myself that I kept faithfully from day one. “The first rule was that I would view each day on the job as if it were my first day. When it’s your first day, you approach your job with fresh enthusiasm. You’re eager to do a good job, you’re not burdened by thoughts

80 / THE MONSEY VIEW

of mistakes from the past, and you try your hardest to impress the higher-ups.” “Wonderful,” said Rabbi Fein with a smile. “And what was your second rule?” “My second rule was that I would view every day on the job as if it might be my last. I never lost sight of the fact that I could be fired at any moment. By acting as if each day might be my last day, I pushed myself to the max. I never took my job or the income it provided for granted, and I never became complacent,” concluded Shimon. “Amazing, simply amazing,” exclaimed Rabbi Fein. “With your permission, I would like to mention you in my Shabbos Shuvah drasha. I think there’s a big mussar haskel in your story.” “Yes, you certainly may, and it would be a great honor,” agreed Shimon. “But may I ask how my story could inspire someone except in business?” “Well, I already prepared my shiur, and your story fits right in. I’ll give you a sneak preview right now!” said Rabbi Fein. “This week’s parsha begins, ‘Vayeilech Moshe vayedabeir es hadvarim ha’eileh el kal Yisroel…’ — And Moshe went and spoke these things to all Yisroel. He said to them, ‘I am 120 years old today…’ “Rashi cites the Gemara in Sotah 13b,” Rabbi Fein continued, “that Moshe Rabbeinu was really telling Klal Yisroel, ‘Today I was born, and today I will die.’ The sefer Birchas Shamayim explains

that Moshe Rabbeinu was giving Klal Yisroel mussar by demonstrating that a person must think to himself, every single day, that he was born on that day and he will die on that day.” “Yes, I see the connection to my idea of every day being my first and last day on the job,” agreed Shimon. “Yes, and we glean a powerful lesson from this,” continued Rabbi Fein. “You might recall that in the Gemara, Shabbos 153a, R’ Eliezer says, ‘Repent one day before your death.’ R’ Eliezer’s talmidim ask him, ‘But does a person know the day on which he will die?’ He replies to them, ‘All the more so, he should repent today, in case he dies tomorrow, so that all of his days will be in teshuvah.’” “Just like all of my days at work were spent working hard to do the best job I could, which led to my becoming CEO!” Shimon smiled. Rabbi Fein nodded. “And when a person does teshuvah, he is considered a new person, free from the mistakes of the past. And if he also sees himself as if he might die that very day, he will naturally do teshuvah and thus ‘be born’ that day. So if a person sees himself as if he will die that day — then through teshuvah, he will be born that day as well! ‘Today I was born, and today I will die.’” May we all do teshuvah today and every day, and be zoche to a gmar chasimah tovah.

Spring Valley Sets New Maximum Taxi Rates Taxi rates within Spring Valley have been officially updated, with the village’s board of trustees voting to approve new maximums over the summer. Taxis operating to and from any location in Spring Valley can charge no more than $6 for two passengers, with an extra $1 per person allowed for additional passengers over the age of eight years old, while children ages seven and under ride free. Children traveling alone will be charged the full adult fare, even if they are under the age of eight. Under the new amendments made to the village code, the $6 maximum for rides within the village rises to $8.50 when there are two or more inches of snow on the ground. Despite the new maximums announced by Spring Valley, any taxi that still has signage indicating a maximum charge of $5 for rides within the village must honor that rate.

Ramapo Bans Vaping in Public Parks and Other Town Properties If you want to smoke an e-cig, you’d better not do it on any land owned by the Town of Ramapo. The Centers for Disease Control issued a warning to

84 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 3, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

United States residents to avoid vaping after a sixth vaping-related death was reported, prompting the Ramapo Town Hall to launch its ban in early September. The ban covers all town properties, including parks. “The safety and health of Town of Ramapo residents is my top priority,” said Supervisor Michael Specht. “In addition to the ban on traditional smoking in our parks, vaping and smoking e-cigarettes are now prohibited as well. I hope people take the warnings of the CDC seriously.” Over the last few weeks, five more people have died of a lung disease that resembles a rare form of pneumonia, with more than 500 sickened, reported CNBC. Symptoms of the disease, which get worse over time, include coughing, shortness of breath, chest pains, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Doctors are advising anyone with a history of vaping who has difficulty breathing or experiences any of those symptoms to seek immediate medical care. Backlash against vaping has been widespread in recent weeks, with President Donald Trump announcing a proposed ban on flavored e-cigs. The Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration have both advised against vaping of any kind.

County Declares Measles Outbreak Officially Over A nearly one-year-long measles outbreak that had the Rockland County Department of Health checking school vaccination records in local yeshivos is now officially over. The outbreak had its source in Uman and began locally in New Square last Sukkos, when visitors to the area spread the virus to other communities. The DOH teamed up with Refuah Health Center, private pediatricians and family doctors, and 29,027 doses of the MMR vaccine were administered in an attempt to stop the spread of the highly contagious virus. There were a total of 312 cases of measles reported to the DOH, and with no new cases confirmed since August 13, the outbreak was officially declared over on September 25.

Theodore tries to converse with Gustav, but Gustav, frozen with fear, can hardly speak. Finally, he flees from Theodore. Aware that Theodore will search for him, he hides in a bombed-out building. Night falls, and it begins to pour. Gustav is freezing, wet, exhausted and hungry. Perhaps it is irritating to see a young woman still on cloud nine from her wedding, forgetting that somewhere there, down on earth, other people exist. She talks only about herself, thinks only about herself, and is sure that aside from her and her new spouse, the world has stopped in its tracks. But it is far less pleasant to see that same woman shedding copious tears, blowing her nose over and over, and unable to utter a single word. And to know that you’re to blame for it. Remarkably timed, Shmuely woke up just then with a piercing wail, and Miri, who was so embarrassed she didn’t know where to put herself, forgot what she was supposed to do with him. Pacifier? Bottle? Pick him up? She began to rock the carriage mechanically, peeking at Tzippy from the corner of her eye. Tzippy was sliding the album into a shiny bag that matched the leather cover. Her hands were shaking so violently that she could not grasp the zipper to close it. Miri scrambled for something to say. Maybe she could invite Tzippy for Shabbos, so they could remember they’re sisters who can get along? But Tzippy would just glare at her with hard eyes. And besides, they were going to Yaakov’s parents this Shabbos.

Maybe she could just apologize and say that she didn’t mean to make her sister cry? So what did you mean to do? Insult, scream and say whatever you want, and then expect her to just keep on smiling? Miri continued to rock the carriage vigorously, and soon the anger inside of her — or perhaps it was the envy again — mounted and overpowered the resonant voice of her guilty conscience. Why should she have to pay rich Tzippy the measly one and a half shekels the photo cost when she lived in a hole in Pardes Katz, and still couldn’t manage to finish the month? Tzippy, on the other hand — who had just been handed an above-standard wedding and all of sheva brachos on a silver platter — owned an amazing apartment in central Bnei Brak and was also receiving a monthly stipend, without her doing anything but sitting with her hands folded. And all this simply because she happened to have been named Tziporah Genendel! Miri bent down to look for Shmuely’s water bottle in the diaper bag. She raised her head just in time to hear the door click closed. Tzippy was gone. “One second, Zeidy, I… just want to tell her something,” Miri said hastily. She left the carriage, dashing out to the hallway. From afar, she spotted her sister’s receding back being swallowed up by the elevator.

With half an ear, she heard Shmuely’s screams from the room. She would pick him up and race down the stairs. It didn’t matter what she would tell Tzippy — she really had no idea what she was going to say — but she couldn’t let her leave like this. She entered the room again and picked up the baby, checking that he was wrapped up well in the blanket. “I’ll be right back, Zeidy,” she said. But Zeidy didn’t reply. His head was slumped down onto his chest, and he was sleeping deeply. “I’ll be right back,” she said in a louder voice, just to be sure. She opened the door again — and emitted a shriek. Standing in front of her was a tall man with gray hair, and perched on his shoulder was — what was that black thing? A mouse? A skunk? A dog? It couldn’t be a dog. It was too small. “I came to see who was crying and screaming like that, disturbing the whole floor,” the man said unsmilingly. “Where is Mr. Yisroel? I want to speak to him.” Miri couldn’t bring herself to answer. Heart pounding, she retreated into the room and sank onto the chair next to her grandfather. “Zeidy, Zeidy!” she wailed desperately. “The… this man came to talk to you. He — there’s an animal there!” But Zeidy kept on sleeping. Fortunately for Miri, the man didn’t enter the room, but remained in the doorway. “It’s not just an animal,” he said. “They’re two little Chihuahua dogs. But Mr. Yisroel,” here he raised his voice, “do you hear me? Why are you sleeping? It’s

not good to sleep all day. At night, in the morning, at lunchtime, in the afternoon… You have guests, who are bothering the whole floor, and only you are sleeping?” A dog? That size? And why did he say there were two? Miri didn’t dare move, and didn’t even take another look. Zeidy slowly opened his eyes. He looked at her with his familiar smile, and with the same smile still on his face, he turned his head to the door. “Good, you’re up,” the dog owner said. “So now, please, keep yourself awake. Talk, tell stories, share memories, look at pictures, but no sleeping, Mr. Yisroel. You’ll sleep later in the afternoon, all right? Anyway, who is this baby? Your greatgrandson?” Zeidy nodded. “So teach him to be quiet, Mr. Yisroel. We can’t have this noise here. It’s a good thing that I happened to be nearby fixing the air-conditioners; otherwise, I wouldn’t have even known about this disturbance. There’s an exercise class in the room at the end of the hall, and people can’t hear the instructor’s directions. Mr. Yisroel, you need to teach your great-grandchildren not to make so much noise. Remember how much noise my dogs made at the beginning? They aren’t easy, these Chihuahuas, even if they’re small and cute.” He burst out laughing and pulled another creature from his jacket pocket. There was something hollow in his laugh, and Miri shrank back into her chair. Was this man one of the residents here? It didn’t seem so. He appeared too young, and based on what he had said, he worked here. Did they let him bring his animals here? Wasn’t it dangerous for the old people? She wondered if her mother had ever met him. Zeidy nodded and raised his hand toward the door in greeting. Miri hoped the man didn’t interpret Zeidy’s motion as an invitation to come in, because she was really afraid of animals. She shuddered. She hoped her younger sister hadn’t met the animals on her way down, because Tzippy feared animals even more than Miri did. It would be a total trauma for her. And she’d had her fair share of trauma for one day. * * * * *

“She’s not answering the phone.” Miri slowly lowered the handset. “You’d think I did whoknows-what to her… What did she get so insulted about? It was just a little thing; I honestly don’t get her. She has an income of thousands of shekels a month, and a perfect house, and she’s not embarrassed to ask me for a measly one and a half shekels for a picture of Shmuely?! So, I told her that.”

She rubbed a fingertip on the handset. “Maybe I was a bit nasty. But I just couldn’t control myself, Yaakov. We’re usually such good sisters. But since she got caught up in the whirlwind of the wedding and all that, she’s became so focused on herself and all the abundance raining down on her…” “Don’t all young couples, in the beginning, focus only on themselves?” Yaakov asked. “You’re right,” Miri admitted, “I was also in the clouds after our wedding, but you can’t compare. You know how considerate I was of her? How I included her in my preparations? We…” She toyed with the telephone wire. “My mother called, but it didn’t sound like she knew anything about this. Tzippy must not have said anything to her.” Yaakov looked at his wife. Were all women like this? Long discussions about who said what to whom, who got offended by whom, who relayed it further to whom? He didn’t remember his mother being like this, and his sisters were still too young. “Do you want to bake something for Shabbos to bring to my parents?” he asked, getting back to the practical side of things. He had listened attentively to Miri’s frustrations at lunch, and then in the evening again, but it didn’t look like his attentiveness and his empathetic expression were enough. She kept going back to the same subject, and still had that pained look in her eyes. “Yes, sure,” she replied distractedly. “But what I really want to do is invite them to us for Shabbos.” “To us? Why?” “To show Tzippy that I’m still a good sister.” “But she doesn’t need your food.” Yaakov was very practical. A bit too practical, if you asked Miri. “Even if you are a much better cook than her, they can afford to buy takeout without a problem, if they get stuck.” Miri looked at Yaakov. Was he joking? Trying to show her how silly she sounded with all of her comparisons between herself and Tzippy? No, he sounded serious. “You cared about her, you bought her an expensive set of linen for the wedding, and you saw that it got swallowed up in everything else she received… I don’t really want you to invite them for Shabbos.” He stood up near the milchig sink, glancing at the few dishes inside it. “I know I sound selfish,” Yaakov said, “but I’m afraid that you’ll invite them, and then you’ll work very hard to cook and to host, all to make them feel good. But then you’ll hear, just incidentally, that they went to a hotel for a different Shabbos, and another week they hosted a slew of guests and bought tons of food for them, and again you’ll feel like the gift that you exerted yourself so much to give was foolish and so unnecessary. Do you see what I’m saying?” He turned on the faucet and wet the sponge under the stream of water. “Yes,” Miri replied, gazing at the strong stream

of water. No, she didn’t mind that the counter was being splattered with droplets. Something else was niggling at her, but she couldn’t put her finger on it. Yaakov understood her so well. At lunchtime she’d thought he didn’t, but now she saw that he did. So what was bothering her about what he said, if he understood her so well and agreed with her sentiments? That was it — the fact that he understood. He was feeling the same frustration. And she really didn’t mean it! Not at all. She’d always dreamed that her husband and Tzippy’s husband would be the closest of brothers-in-law. She was allowed to complain a little about Tzippy, get annoyed at her, even be a tiny drop jealous of her. After all, they were sisters, and b’ezras Hashem, the tension between them would pass. But Yaakov and Peretz were just brothers-inlaw; they hardly knew each other yet. Why did she have to ruin their start? She still remembered how, before her wedding, her kallah teacher had told her, “Think a hundred times before you complain about your family to your husband. Because even when you forget and move on, that stain will remain engraved in your husband’s mind, and it will be hard to persuade him later that it was just a temporary tiff and that it had all passed.” Miri swallowed. Yes, she was jealous. There were moments when she was so jealous of Tzippy that she could hardly admit it to herself. But Yaakov must not envy Peretz. She could not cause that to happen. To be continued...

Talk of Impeachment Grips Washington BACKGROUND: On Wednesday, September 18, The Washington Post broke a story of an alleged whistleblower complaint against President Donald Trump. The complaint centered around a phone call that the president held with a foreign leader. On September 20 the Post identified that leader as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski. It explained that the problematic nature of the call was related to pressure exerted by Trump on the Ukrainian leader to investigate the Ukrainian dealings of Joe Biden and his son Hunter. The New York Times followed by reporting that Trump

102 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 3, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

instructed Zelenski to work with his lawyer Rudy Giuliani on the matter. The Wall Street Journal claimed that Trump raised the issue with Zelenski “about eight times. On September 24, the House of Representatives began a formal impeachment inquiry. This article will attempt to explain and highlight the key issues and players involved in this controversy. DONALD TRUMP: President of the United States.

Elected in a surprise victory in the 2016 election. As a Washington outsider he has challenged the accepted political norms of government. He presides over a sharply divided electorate. He retains strong support from his Republican base, but is subject to vehement criticism from many of his opponents.

JOE BIDEN: Former Vice President of the United States during the Obama administration. Currently he is a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. He represents the centrist elements of the Democratic Party. He led in early polling but is currently facing a strong challenge from a surging Elizabeth Warren. HUNTER BIDEN: Son of Joe

Biden. A lawyer by profession. He sat on the board of Burisma Holdings from 2014 to 2019. VOLODYMYR ZELENSKY: For-

mer comedian turned politician, who was elected president of the Ukraine in April 2019. He defeated the incumbent president Petro Poroshenko by winning nearly 73 percent of the popular vote. He is the first Jewish president of the Ukraine. BURISMA HOLDINGS: a large

privately held Ukrainian gas group that was owned by Mykola Zlochevsky, a former Ukranian Minister of Ecology. In 2014, the then–vice president’s son Hunter Biden joined the board of Burisma Holdings. At around the same time, Zlochevsky came under investigation for corrupt business dealings. VICTOR SHONKIN: In 2015,

Shonkin was appointed Prosecutor General of Ukraine. He was tasked with investigating Burisma Holdings, Shonkin himself was accused of being inept and corrupt. The European Union (EU), International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the United States government all demanded his ouster. In December 2018, Vice President Biden told Ukrainian leaders to fire Shonkin or lose $1 billion in U.S. loan guarantees. Biden would later boast that his

threats were successful in getting Shonkin removed from his post. In March 2016, the Ukranian parliament voted to remove Shonkin from his position. Yuri Lutsenko replaced him as Prosecutor General. In January 2017, the probes of Burisma Holdings were formally closed. THE CLAIM OF MISCONDUCT: In March 2018, Con-

servative investigative journalist Peter Schweizer published a book that alleged corruption by Hunter Biden during his time in Ukraine. In a May 2019 interview with FOX News, President Trump claimed that Biden had pressured the Ukrainian government to fire Shonkin to protect his son Hunter. This claim or variants thereof have been repeated in many conservative news outlets. Shonkin himself has reinforced these claims by claiming that his investigation of Burisma (and Hunter Biden) was the only reason for his firing. However, both American and Ukranian officials have stated that the Burisma probe was inactive at the time of Shonkin’s firing. Furthermore, there is no evidence that the Burisma investigation focused on the actions of Hunter Biden. THE PHONE CALL: In July 2019, President Trump held a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Zelensky. In this phone call, he asked Zelensky to help investigate the actions of the Bidens. During the phone call Trump instructed Zelensky to be in touch with Attorney General William Barr and Rudy Giuliani. This is highly unusual, as the normal address for a foreign government is the State Department — and not the Attorney General’s office or the president’s personal lawyer. According to some me-

dia reports of the whistleblower complaint, the phone call also included an inappropriate “promise” made by President Trump. However, the details of the phone call released to date do not show evidence of any promise being made. THE WHISTLEBLOWER: The anonymous whistleblower is a member of the U.S. intelligence community. The whistleblower was concerned that President Trump was improperly using the power of his office and the force of the U.S. government to pressure Ukrainian officials into providing him with dirt on his political opponent Joe Biden. On August 12, he followed procedure and filed a complaint with the Intelligence Community Inspector General. MICHAEL ATKINSON: Atkin-

son is the Intelligence Community Inspector General. Upon receiving the report, he was tasked with investigating whether the concerns in the complaint were credible and a matter of urgent concern. Atkinson determined that the issue was of urgent concern, thereby triggering a legally required disclosure to Congress. JOSEPH MAGUIRE: Maguire

is the acting Director of National Intelligence. He assumed this position after the resignation of Dan Coates. Maguire refused to hand over the complaint to Congress, citing confidential and potentially privileged information. On September 13, 2019, House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff subpoenaed Maguire to force him to disclose the contents of the complaint. On September 24, the Republican-controlled Senate passed a non-binding 100-0 resolution calling on the administra-

tion to release the report. The next day, the administration released a limited transcript of the president’s phone call with Zelensky and eventually released the whistleblower complaint to Congress.

‫האט כח צו פאסטן‬ ‫גרינגער יום כיפור‬

RUDY GIULIANI: The former mayor of

New York is at the heart of the Ukraine controversy. He has held many meetings with various Ukrainian officials, and the nature of many of those meetings remains unknown. Giuliani had also created controversy with his comments during many media appearances. UKRAINIAN AID: On September 24,

President Trump confirmed that he had instructed the State Department to withhold aid from Ukraine prior to his phone call with Zelensky. The reason for this decision remains unclear. This has led to speculation that it was intended as a form of pressure to get Zelensky to conform with the president’s demands. NANCY PELOSI: The Speaker of the

House had launched a formal impeachment inquiry. She has instructed six House committees to investigate whether the impeachment of the president is warranted. To date, 225 members of the House of Representatives are on record supporting the impeachment of the president.

WHY IT MATTERS: Even if the House approves articles of impeachment, it is unlikely that the Republican-controlled Senate will vote to remove the president from office. However, in today’s political environment, everything is fluid, and it is impossible to know with certainty how things will play out. The more likely impact is that the impeachment proceedings will crowd out all other political news for the foreseeable future. This, in terms of the electorate, will likely prove damaging for both Joe Biden and President Trump.

PEANUT CHEW SURPRISE LOGS CHOCOLATE CASING 1 lb. good-quality chocolate 1 jar peanut butter 5½ cups rice crispies

PEANUT BUTTER FILLING 1 cup peanut butter 1 cup sugar 1 cup corn syrup 1 cup salted peanuts, crushed

DIRECTIONS 1. Prepare filling: Place peanut butter, sugar and corn syrup into a small pot and cook on low flame, stirring until all ingredients are melted. Set aside. 2. In a double boiler, melt chocolate and peanut butter. Add rice crispies and mix. Fill silicone molds a third way full with rice crispies mixture, brushing upward with back of a spoon to create indentation for filling. 3. Place filling into a piping bag and squeeze some into the center of the molds. (Set aside some filling for the topping.) Sprinkle some chopped peanuts on top of the filling. Top with some more rice crispies mix. Freeze until firm. Once firm remove from molds. 4. To decorate the logs, pipe reserved filling on top, rewarming the filling in a bag with hot water. Top with some peanuts and a drizzle of chocolate. Tip: For a super-smooth exterior, coat silicone molds by brushing with some baking chocolate before the first step. Variation: You can also make two large logs with this recipe, using the listed amounts for the chocolate mixture, and one and a half times the ingredient amounts listed for the filling.

Erev Yom Kippur is always an intense day, but this year the intensity was at its peak. I had many raw emotions to contend with. With the sudden petirah of my vibrant father just weeks prior, I’d been promoted to the ranks of Yizkor-goers and had to make arrangements for this new reality.

I very much longed to say that first Yizkor in the shul where my father had most often davened, where the presence of my siblings would provide some measure of support. I was not yet ready to face this experience on my own. On Erev Yom Kippur, I tried each of my siblings, but no one knew at what time Yizkor would be said, and so I found myself crying at the lecht, the first time I was going into Yom Kippur without my father’s heartfelt brachos, with no definite plans for Yizkor. After Maariv, my husband inquired about the time for Yizkor and was told that if I’d be in shul by 12:30, I would definitely arrive on time.

122 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 3, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

With that timing in mind, I arranged for a neighbor to care for my young ones, packed a machzor and a stash of tissues, and started the trek to shul, where multitudes of chassidim from around the world joined their Rebbe over the Yomim Noraim. As I neared the shul, I was met by a sea of white kittels and tichel-bedecked women rushing home to catch some rest in the short intermission between Shacharis and Mussaf. I had missed Yizkor. I had missed the opportunity to commemorate my father’s neshamah surrounded by close family, and perhaps even the chance to catch a minyan at all. Instinctively, I continued to my mother’s home, engulfed in a deep, searing pain. When I reached the edge of the familiar property and saw my mother and sisters solemnly walking up to the door, my emotions reached a crescendo and the dam broke. I stood outside, vulnerable and exposed, crying unchecked tears, both for the sudden, untimely loss of my father and for the lost opportunity to commemorate him. It felt like a terrible blow. After the difficult weeks I’d just endured, was I not even deserving of the small measure of comfort reciting Yizkor for my father would

give me? Suddenly, my brother appeared from inside the house. “Come, come!” he called, motioning with his hand. He had sized up the situation and was determined to help me find a minyan. At Rav Stein’s* shul a few blocks away, he said, they might still be before Yizkor. I followed him wordlessly, joined by a sister who was accompanying me simply so I shouldn’t have to be alone. We sure made a strange sight: two grown women with tear-streaked faces, struggling to keep pace with a rushing man, his tallis flying. My sister and I followed him wordlessly, mindlessly, for a long distance. We passed quite a few shtieblach, and then finally arrived at Rav Stein’s. I wanted to go in to inquire whether they had already said Yizkor, but my brother looked at his watch and said, “Let’s not waste time. They are probably deep into Mussaf already.” We continued until we neared the newly built shul of Kehillas Yisroel*. Two mispallelim outside confirmed that they hadn't recited Yizkor yet. My brother pointed to the women’s section, and my sister and I trekked up the steep staircase, exhausted and breathless.

124 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 3, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Before we even opened the door, we heard the chazzan’s rendition of Avinu Malkeinu. He was reciting each word slowly, in a beautiful, hallowed melody. In our kehillah it is customary for each mispallel to recite Avinu Malkeinu quietly, only following the chazzan for five specific lines. It was truly heartwarming to arrive at such a poignant moment, one we had never experienced before. Silent gestures and motions to take a seat welcomed us. We were also met with some questioning gazes from acquaintances who surely wondered what had led us to this particular minyan, which we were obviously not associated with. While waiting for Yizkor, we were zoche to follow along with krias haTorah as the baal korei enunciated each word slowly, with intense kavanah, in a touching, solemn tune. We reveled in the opportunity to hear every word of the Torah-reading on this auspicious day and fervently answered amen, whispering kapitlach of Tehillim whenever we had the chance. Finally, a solemn, still aura surrounded us as the shul emptied out and Yizkor began. I whispered the unfamiliar words, doing the precious little I still could for my dear father. The experience was haunting, yet I found peace and comfort knowing that this incident was surely no coincidence. I was certain that the day’s events, all of the pain and disappointment, was orchestrated by Hashem’s hand, which had guided me directly to this shul as a zechus for my father’s neshamah. And it truly was remarkable that we’d ended up precisely in that particular shul. Years earlier, my father had been mekarev the father of the present Rav of that shul, a devout and pious oved Hashem who had arrived in America as a downtrodden immigrant. He had tried to build a kehillah from the ground up in the basement of his home, and my father, with his signature warmth, had given him chizuk. And even though he was far from a man of means, my father helped him finan-

cially, and physically as well. Once the Rav moved back to Eretz Yisroel, my father continued this relationship with his son, the present Rav. How fitting it was that my father be remembered in the place where he’d done so much chesed! We retraced our footsteps to my mother’s house, where we shared what had occurred over the last few hours. “You said Yizkor in Kehillas Yisroel?” my mother asked incredulously. “And followed along the entire krias haTorah?” Her voice was laced with emotion. “Are you aware that Tatty’s sefer Torah is currently being used in that shul?” We could not believe how this saga was becoming more and more remarkable — and meaningful. Some fifteen years earlier, my father had written a sefer Torah in honor of his late father, and whenever the need arose, he’d generously loan it

to shuls requiring a second sefer Torah. Just a few weeks earlier, right after my father’s passing, one of the gabbaim of Kehillas Yisroel had asked my mother if they could borrow the sefer Torah for their newly constructed shul until they’d manage to get hold of a second sefer Torah. Since my father had been heavily invested in the shul, my mother readily agreed. It didn’t take long for us to confirm with the gabbai that the krias haTorah, which we had heard and answered amen to, was indeed leined in my father’s sefer Torah. What had seemed, in the moment, to be the biggest blow turned out to be the most caressing, comforting stroke from Above. L’ilui nishmas‫ר' משה בן ר' דוד‬

When I was ten or eleven years old, new neighbors moved to our block. I overheard adults talking about them, saying that both parents were Holocaust survivors. This, in itself, was not unusual in the 1950s, when every newcomer was greeted with the same two questions: “Shalom Aleichem. Where are you from, and where were you during the war?” One yom tov day, I went to play at my new friend’s house, and I saw a sight that bewildered me. It was a day on which Yizkor was recited, and the kitchen table had two trays full of lit yahrtzeit candles. When I asked my friend to explain, she answered by reciting a little ditty — if it could be called that — she had composed. While pointing at the candles, she chanted: “Father’s father, father’s mother, mother’s father, mother’s mother.” And then, waving her hand over the rest of the candles, she continued, “Father’s and mother’s sisters and brothers.” I was completely taken aback. Though I had heard a little about the war, it was the first time in my young life that I faced from up close the reality of what people had actually lost. This was before the era of bookshelves full of Holocaust memoirs. The wounds were still fresh, and most survivors used whatever energy they had left to try to rebuild their lives. They hardly spoke about their experiences. Of course, this was not typical behavior of people preparing to say Yizkor for their departed relatives. Most who light candles for Yizkor only light for their parents — and there are those who don’t light Yizkor candles at all. What is Yizkor? It is a prayer in which we ask Hashem to remember and elevate the neshamos of relatives who have already passed on, especially parents. The main component of Yizkor is not the words of the prayer as much as the pledge of each person to give tzedakah in the merit of their father and mother. We who are here on earth can still perform good deeds, which they cannot do, and we beseech Hashem to count our deeds as a merit for the neshamos of those we are remembering. Though the main focus of Yizkor is one’s parents — and anyone whose parents are still alive goes out of shul when Yizkor is recited — there is a tefillah that

128 / THE MONSEY VIEW

one can say in memory of other departed relatives. The Yizkor tefillah that we say on Yom Kippur is even more significant than that of the other three yomim tovim, because whereas on the other yomim tovim we just ask Hashem to elevate the neshamos of the niftarim, on Yom Kippur even the departed are being judged, so we approach the prayer of Yizkor with even more solemnity. There’s an interesting phenomenon about the prayer of Yizkor. It does not require a minyan, unlike prayers

was recited. When my father, z”l, was niftar, I felt that I had entered a new realm. The best way to describe my emotions during Yizkor is that they were of intense longing, wishing that the departed one would still be with us and that we would then be able to honor him more and physically attend to his needs. I once heard a poignant story from the daughter of Reb Yossel Friedensohn, a”h. Reb Yossel was a Polish Jew who suffered terribly at the hands of the Nazis, yemach shemam. After the war, Reb Yossel, who was a prolific writer, used his talents to describe the Poland that was lost, as well as the atrocities that Jewry as a whole had suffered. In his old age, he once spent a yom tov at his daughter’s home in Monsey, and he went to daven in the shul frequented by his son-in-law, a minyan composed mostly of young people. When it came time to say Yizkor, most of the congregants went out. His sonin-law, seeing this, tried to apologize for the fact that there wasn’t a minyan is shul for Yizkor, but Reb Yossel wouldn’t hear of it. “Apologize?” he said. “When I was in the DP camp after the war, I davened with a few hundred people. And when it came to Yizkor, not a single person left the room! Each and every person there had at least someone for whom to say Yizkor. Thank Hashem that you have parents and that you can daven for their continued wellbeing!” In Ani Ma’amin, we say every day that we believe that Hashem will resurrect all of the deceased generations when He deems the time right. May we merit to see techiyas hameisim speedily in our days, with the coming of Moshiach. Amen.

The best way to describe my emotions during Yizkor is that they were of intense longing. like Kaddish. Everyone says Yizkor on his own, without a chazzan leading. Yet Yizkor is the prayer that draws even the most unaffiliated Jews, who would otherwise never enter a shul, to join the other congregants. There was a woman who used to come to our shul for Yizkor. Unfortunately, she had no religious education, and she did not know how to daven. Once, on yom tov, my mother, a”h, had to shush my sister and her friend who began giggling when they noticed that the woman was holding her siddur upside down. She knew nothing about Yiddishkeit, yet she felt that coming to shul for Yizkor was something she could do for her dear departed parents. During my childhood and young adulthood, I was among the fortunate who went out of shul when Yizkor

AN HEIRLOOM KINDEL RECIPE Making kindel is not only an art — it is a labor of love. The process is time-consuming, but so worth the beautiful rolls, rich in tradition and flavor, that result. The days of Tishrei are saturated with simanim and minhagim. While we don’t always know the reason behind each minhag and how they came about, minhagim are the colorful threads woven into the beautiful tapestry of Yiddishkeit. These traditions have deep significance, and preparing them at home will inspire the next generation to uphold the family’s minhagim. And if it is not possible to prepare these foods in your home, minhagim can be upheld with store-bought varieties. Growing up, my mother would serve this symbolic nutfilled delicacy each Hoshana Rabbah and Purim, and in my home, too, making this delicious pastry is an important part of yom tov preparation. (There are those who serve it on Shemini Atzeres or Simchas Torah, and not on Hoshana Rabbah.) While you roll out the dough, weigh and measure the nuts, and lovingly prepare the kindel, it is an auspicious time to be mispallel for ehrliche kinder. In the sefer V’hayisem Li Segulah it is brought down from Minhagei Hakehillos that in the city of Mattersdorf there was an old minhag to go out of the shul on Shemini Atzeres and throw nuts. The reason for this custom was that from Rosh Hashanah, nuts were not consumed — since egoz and chet have the same gematria — but since the Yidden had done teshuvah mei’ahavah, the chataim had been converted to zechiyos. Stemming from this is the Hungarian minhag to bake pastries with nuts. Reb Itzikel Pshevorsker said that on Shemini Atzeres after the culmination of the tefillos for the new year, Hashem takes all of our tefillos from Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Sukkos, “uhn Ehr vikelt ess ein” — He wraps it up. And that is why they had a minhag of eating kindel, wrapped — “gevikelte” — pastries. This heirloom recipe, shared with me by Mrs. Heidi (Henchy) Deutsch, a”h, includes three different glazes, which are spread over the dough at different points of the process. Making kindel is best done if you have the option of enlisting the help of an extra pair of hands, especially for the rolling.

DIRECTIONS

1.

Advance preparation (needed for filling): Peel or scrape off very outer edge of lemon rind (since rind is questionable in regard to kashrus) using a fine peeler or paring knife. Cut into eighths. Remove pits and any hard skin edges. Place in freezer until partially frozen.

2.

Prepare dough: Combine all dough ingredients in a mixing bowl, and mix well. If the dough feels too soft to work with, add 3 tablespoons flour and/or place in refrigerator until it becomes more workable.

3.

4.

Prepare filling: Place partially frozen lemon pieces into food processor and process with the S blade until fine consistency is achieved. Add 1 cup of nuts to the lemon and mix by hand, crumbling to get all the lumps out. Then add the rest of the ingredients, except for the craisins, and mix with the S blade.

Prepare honey wash: Mix egg whites, honey and oil and prepare in a jar with pastry brush.

5.

Divide in five: Using a kitchen scale, divide both the dough and the filling into five uniform parts. Lightly cover the pieces of dough (with a dish towel or parchment paper) so they won’t dry out until you work with them.

7.

Smear a generous amount of honey wash onto the dough, but don’t flood it.

138 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 3, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

6.

Sprinkle some flour onto working surface. Working with one dough at a time, roll thinly, but not too thinly, into a rectangle. The length should be approximately the length of a cookie sheet. Don’t worry if the dough isn’t perfectly shaped or stretches while working; the roll can be pushed into shape when it gets transferred to the cookie sheet.

8.

Distribute one part of nut filling evenly over surface.

9.

10.

Neatly roll up the dough, and place roll onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. You can put three rolls onto one cookie sheet and two on the other. Flatten the rolls with your hands a bit.

12.

11.

Prepare egg wash: Once all five rolls are done, whisk egg yolks with a fork. Smear with pastry brush on top of rolls.

Slice rolls: Prepare some flour on a piece of parchment paper. Dip knife into flour and slice, patiently and slowly, on a diagonal about two-thirds way through, while keeping the roll in place with your other hand. Keep coating the knife as needed.

13.

In an oven preheated at 350°, bake kindel rolls for fifteen minutes. Remove from oven.

140 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 3, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Scatter a handful of craisins (about 40 per roll) over nut filling.

For an extra artistic touch, distribute filling only until 2 inches from the end. Cut empty area into strips, and twist each two strands together. Then flip strands over roll to form crowns. Secure strands under roll.

14.

Prepare glaze: Mix honey and water well. Brush over rolls generously to give the rolls both a beautiful lacquered look and a sweet taste.

15.

Reduce heat to 325°, and bake until well done, approximately 25 minutes.

Another variation: You can achieve this look by making small horizontal cuts in the rolls instead of slicing it, or use your creativity to come up with another look you like.

Origins The Candle and the Soul “Ner Elokim nishmas adam” — Man’s neshamah is the light of Hashem (Mishlei 20:27).

The custom of lighting neshamah lecht can be traced as far back as the time of the Mishnah. The Gemara states that Havdalah should not be made over these flames because they serve to honor those who are no longer among the living. Thus, we can infer that people used to light candles for the deceased.

The wick can be compared to the body of man and the flame to his soul. Lighting a candle represents the human connection with kedushah. Through Torah and mitzvos, the Yid illuminates his body and soul.

Before his passing, Rebbe Yehudah Hanasi, the compiler of the Gemara, instructed his sons to keep the candle that burned in his lifetime burning in its place.

As a symbol of the Yiddishe neshamah, the candle is an appropriate memorial for a niftar or nifteres. We thus light a candle on a yahrtzeit and during the first year following a petirah.

The flame serves to refill with light the dark void that is left behind when a neshamah passes on.

On every yom tov when Yizkor is recited, we light a candle, too.

Reasons to Light for a Niftar

It is also a source of kaparah for the neshamah. The neshamah, the epitome of spiritual light, rejoices in physical candlelight ignited in its memory, as it says, “Ohr tzaddikim yismach” — The light of the righteous will rejoice (Mishlei 13:9).

Candle Type According to Kabbalah, it may be preferable to use an oil lamp.

Many have the minhag to light a candle made of sha’avah (beeswax) because it can be an acronym for “Hakitzu v’ranenu shochnei afar” (Yeshaya 26:19), which references techiyas hameisim.

Four Reasons for Lecht on Yom Kippur IN HONOR OF YOM TOV We light candles to fulfill the mitzvah of hadlakas neiros, just like we do every Shabbos and yom tov. Unlike the other candles lit especially for Yom Kippur, these candles need not burn throughout the entire day.

In the Courts of Tzaddikim As a child in the shul of the Ahavas Yisroel of Viznitz, zy”a, an elderly man reminisced how much he and the other boys used to love watching the shammas light the three-foot-long candle in shul. A gentile fireman, fully dressed in his firefighter’s uniform, stood by all day long to guard the fire from spreading.

IN SHUL We cannot honor Yom Kippur with a seudah, like we do every other yom tov. Instead, we honor yom tov with lighting extra candles. Years back, a candle was lit for every person, young and old. Today, only married men light a candle. The candle should be long enough to last the entire Yom Kippur.

TO HONOR DECEASED PARENTS As is accepted every yom tov when Yizkor is recited, a ner neshamah is kindled. This candle is lit at home.

FOR USE DURING HAVDALAH During Havdalah, we say “borei me’orei ha’eish” to commemorate light, which was created on Motzei Shabbos. This bracha is not made after yom tov because it is not applicable at that time. On Motzei Yom Kippur, however, we recognize the renewal of light.

Additionally, adjusting a flame is not permitted on Yom Kippur. Thus, when Yom Kippur ends, to indicate that we can now use fire again, we recite “borei me’orei ha’eish” and make the bracha specifically on a flame that was lit before — and not adjusted during — Yom Kippur.

146 / THE MONSEY VIEW

In Belz, a non-Jew used to enter the shul just before Ne’ilah to light candles so that all the congregants would be able to see. Rebbetzin Malka suggested to her husband, the Sar Shalom of Belz, zy”a, that perhaps this minhag should be abolished and tall candles be lit on Erev Yom Kippur instead. The Sar Shalom, however, was adamantly against it: “Davka at this time we want a gentile to enter the shul so that Hashem can see the difference between a Yid and a gentile.”
