P E R S ONA L ACCO U NT I first saw her when she was in 12th grade. She was a shadow of a human being. Her demeanor bespoke dejection, her spirit crushed – battered and broken by the harshness of life.
daughter really is, as she had learned to do through Sod Ha’adam. The healing process then followed as a natural consequence of the mother’s feelings in her heart.
She hardly uttered a word, but when she did, it was garbled and barely audible. In every aspect it was clear that she saw herself as an outcast living on the periphery of life.
Furthermore, to the daughter’s, mother’s and whole family's surprise and enormous joy, the healing did not just remain a stagnant entity; it proved to be a seed for continued, endless growth and triumph.
Based upon her symptoms, professionals had diagnosed her “as being on the autism/Asperger’s spectrum.” And as such, as a virtual emotional cripple, she passed her school years.
Yet the story does not end here. As the mother continued on with her Sod Ha’adam progress, she couldn’t help but notice the gradual but significant changes in her other children too – children who had been doing well, who now exhibited strength and new vibrance in their personalities that neither she nor they had ever dreamed they possessed.
SHE WAS POISED, DIGNIFIED AND VIBRANT
I saw her again, a while later. It was after her mother had worked her way through the Sod Ha’adam transformative process. And her daughter was a totally different person. No, actually, she had become herself living the radiance that had been lying dormant within her all along. She was poised, dignified, and vibrant, expressing creativity and talent, completely and actively connecting to those around her.
I met her then, and we spoke. She related to me with sensitivity, maturity, with profound social awareness. Incredibly, her greatest failing had become her ultimate strength. I had to know what had happened! Finally, the mother shared her secret with me, the secret that Sod Ha’adam tells. No, her work did not target the girl’s “spectrum diagnosis” because the mother now knew that symptoms don’t define a limitation or disorder. Instead, she connected deep down to who her

But that’s not all. The whole family is now experiencing a whole new level of enjoyment of sharing and closeness, which deepens and widens continuously. In her courses Reb. Tukachinsky explains: Why is there so much emotional suffering in our times as never before in history? As Chazal have forewarned, it’s the end stages of galus. But Hashem does not send us these yissurim to break us with labels, diagnoses or verdicts, as if to seal our fate with emotional impairment. On the contrary, Hashem created us yidden to flourish and shine. And indeed, it is within our power to know and believe that beneath all the darkness, in every person lies a wholesome, hidden spark that is still alive, and can positiviely be rekindled and shine brightly.

(Re: Boggled!, Issue 214) Just like so many of your Inbox letter-writers, I enjoyed your article describing the running of the Boggle game. Our family members have been Boggle fans from when we were growing up; we play for fun and stimulation, but we also had to come up with some strict rules to control the family competition. Therefore, I’d like to clarify one rule with you: Since you only specified that “s” may not be added to a given word, can we assume that -er, -ed,-y, -ing, etc. may be added? S.W. THE BOGGLE TEAM RESPONDS: Thank you for your feedback! Yes, we do allow suffixes other than -s in our Boggle game.

THE PASSING OF AN ERA I’m writing this letter just after returning from the levayah of Dr. Seymour Gorelick. It feels like the passing of an era. With his passing, we have lost the concept of a pediatrician who was part of the family, who knew not only each patient, but also his parents and grandparents. He never greeted a patient without a twinkle in his eye, a parsha question or a joke. I raised twelve children under his care, and from the oldest (who he was surprised to see had a tooth at four weeks old!) to the youngest (whom I recently mar-

YOUR VOICE TO STRIKE A BALANCE As a mother of high school students who’ve just returned to another year of learning, I feel it’s important to raise the subject of homework. My teenagers come home from school after an exhausting day, and as soon as supper is over and bedtime begins for the little ones, the homework pressure is on! With tests to study for and notes to review, it’s a race against time. By the time they are finished, they are utterly exhausted and ready to plop into bed, before they’d even had a couple of minutes for themselves. Although my daughters enjoy school, the abundance of homework leaves them frustrated and pressured. Yes, I believe it’s important for students to review the subject matter, but I also believe it’s important for girls to have time to spend with each other and air out a bit. Therefore, I’m broaching this topic in this forum so we can perhaps come to a solution that will satisfy the students, teachers and parents. Anonymous

It says in this week’s parsha, “All these curses will befall you, pursuing you and overtaking you to destroy you... Because you did not serve Hashem, your G-d, with happiness and with gladness of heart, over the abundance of everything.” (Devarim 28:45-47) Rabbeinu Bachya notes that feeling simcha in doing mitzvos is in itself a mitzvah. As frightening as it sounds, we can be keeping the mitzvos 100 percent perfectly, yet be exiled to galus because we did not serve Hashem with simcha. The Chofetz Chaim explains this to mean that a person must feel more simcha in his avodas Hashem than in the pleasures in this world. Similarly, the Arizal explains the pasuk to mean: “Because you did not serve Hashem with a joy greater than the joy caused by an abundance of everything.” According to the Arizal, it is not enough for a person to serve Hashem with simcha, but he must feel more simcha in serving Hashem than he feels from any other source of joy. But can a person be commanded to feel simcha? Is it really within our power to induce a certain feeling? It must be so, for the Torah does not demand from us the impossible. Yes, life can be painful and keeping mitzvos can seem challenging at times, but we must maintain our simcha. The question is: how? Indeed, how can a person maintain a feeling of simcha in carrying out mitzvos regardless of the challenges they face? One answer is that we must maintain a proper

perspective. How we view a situation affects how we feel about it. Imagine an architect who must sharpen his pencils from time to time complaining in misery about this chore. Did I study for so many years to become a professional pencil sharpener? he might lament. The reality is that he is not a professional pencil sharpener; sharpening pencils is just a small aspect of what is needed to do his overall job as an architect. If he would
It could help to step back and see the big picture of who they really are: an eved Hashem. step back and see the big picture rather than focusing on one detail out of context, he could see himself as he truly is: an architect, not a pencil sharpener. Likewise, if a person gets overwhelmed by a certain mitzvah, such as cleaning for Pesach, it could help to step back and see the big picture of who they really are: an eved Hashem, not a house scrubber. Another shift in perspective to help us find simcha in our avodas Hashem is to realize that what may feel restrictive may be exactly what saves us. This can be explained with a mashal: A man grew weary of living within the confines of a walled region. Just looking at the wall made him miserable. If only I could climb over that wall and leave this place — this place is a prison! he thought. In reality, the wall was
situated on the edge of a cliff. If the man had known that the wall was not there to restrict his freedom, but rather to protect him from falling, would he still feel confined by the wall, or would he feel grateful that the wall was there? So it is with the Torah. One who dwells within its confines is saved from losing both this world and the next. That being the case, a person should certainly feel great simcha when keeping the Torah. It is also worth noting that living according to the Torah should bring a person simcha. Hashem is perfect and the Torah is perfect, so if a person is lacking simcha, they should look within themselves for the solution — there may be something they are doing that is not right, or that they should be doing differently. Imagine a young girl who hears that the big riding toy outside the grocery store is great fun. The little girl climbs on top of the ride with eager anticipation, but after a few moments of sitting on the motionless ride, she begins to cry. “This isn’t fun at all,” she cries to her mother. Imagine how quickly that sorrow would turn to joy if the mother would tell the girl to insert a few quarters. Similarly, if we find that our avodas Hashem is lacking simcha, it would be worthwhile to find out if we are doing everything as it should be done. May we all serve Hashem with great simcha and be zoche to a new year filled with Hashem’s blessings. Kesivah v’chasimah tovah!

Monsey Community Mourns Loss of Longtime Pediatrician Dr. Seymour Gorelick, a longtime beloved Monsey pediatrician who had been in practice for decades, passed away last week at the age of 86. He had hundreds of patients at his practice, Hillcrest Medical Associates in Nanuet. Dr. Gorelick graduated the Chicago Medical School in 1958 and served in the United States Army as a general medical officer for two years. He had been practicing medicine in Monsey since 1963 and, for some Monsey families, had been the pediatrician for four generations. The levayah for Dr. Gorelick was held last Friday, with kevurah at Gates of Zion Cemetery in Airmont. Chanie Daskal had been a patient of Dr. Gorelick’s as a child, returning again to his office as a mother with her own little ones. She remembered Dr. Gorelick for his warmth and kindness and recalled a visit he had made to her home when she was eight or nine years old and had a late-night panic attack on a bitter cold winter night. “He stayed there until I was in bed and asleep,” recalled Mrs. Daskal. “That’s the type of doctor he was. I am forever grateful for his passionate care to me.”
Driver Hits Bear on Route 202 It was one of those calls that don’t come in to the Ramapo Police Department every day — the report of a car crashing into a black bear. The Journal News reported that the incident took place just before 8 a.m. on September 12, on Route 202 between Grandview Avenue and Kimmissy Court, a short distance from Yeshiva Ohr Reuven. The grey SUV struck the bear as it wandered onto the roadway, causing seri-

ous damage to the front end of the vehicle. The bear headed into the woods, with police searching for the injured animal as they arrived on scene. The driver of the SUV sustained non-life threatening injuries. Ramapo Valley Ambulance and Hatzoloh responded to the scene of the accident.
Worldwide Campaign Has Jewish Community Coming Through for Family of Fallen NYPD Officer The Jewish community had an opportunity to show its true colors last Friday afternoon when the family of an NYPD officer who died last spring was presented with a generous gift, the results of a crowdfunding campaign that drew donors from as far away as Yerushalayim and the United Kingdom. Officer Marc St. Arromand, 42, died on April 11 when he lost control of his motorcycle as he was driving to work on the Belt Parkway in Queens. Hoping to show the

Jewish community’s appreciation for the NYPD and to honor the memory of the fallen officer who, one week earlier, had been part of the police escort for the Skulener Rebbe’s levayah, Rabbi Yisroel Kahan of the Monsey-based Oizrim created a fundraising page, setting a goal of $10,000. It took just over 24 hours for the campaign to surpass its goal, ultimately hitting $11,000, thanks to the generosity of more than 400 contributors. Comments left on the page in memory of the fourteen-year veteran of the NYPD, offered messages of solace, including “In honor of this dedicated police officer who heroically gave his life to protect our city,” and “We salute our brave law enforcement officers and honor the memory of Marc St. Arromand. May his family find comfort in the good name and wonderful example of what it means to be a ‘mentch’ that he left behind.” Going the extra mile for the five St. Arromand children, Rabbi Kahan reached out to Meilich Miller, a buyer for Toys 4 U. Miller conferred with company CEO, Yossi Itzkowitz, who issued a $1,000 Toys 4 U gift card to the children. St. Arromand’s widow and children came to Toys 4 U’s Boro Park store on Friday afternoon, where they were joined by members of the NYPD and several police liaisons. They were presented with a $12,000 check from Oizrim, an amount that included the value of the toy store gift card. Racing gleefully up and down the aisles, the children filled two carts with toys, with one saying it was one of the happiest days of his young life. “It was a beautiful opportunity to create a kiddush Hashem and to show the family and the NYPD just how much we value our police officers,” said Rabbi Kahan. “It was the least we could do to honor the memory of Officer St. Arromand.”

Recap: Janek and Ulush escape to Senica, leaving Edo in Bratislava with someone from the Vaad. Janek contemplates sending Edo to Eretz Yisroel with a group who will be traveling by boat, but Ulush is adamantly against it. In Yerushalayim, Miri can’t contain her jealousy over her younger sister’s good fortune: her plum apartment, the elegant wedding, and now perhaps even being supported by Korman for the whole first year... Yerushalayim
“Good morning, Zeidy.” Miri pushed the carriage into the small room and entered. The carpet swallowed her footsteps, but her grandfather raised his head at the sound of her voice and smiled. “Oh, Miri, hi, good morning!” Tzippy chirped. “You haven’t seen my album yet. We just got it last night. What do you say to the design?” “Design?” Miri took a step closer, parking the carriage in the corner. Oh, it was a digitally enhanced album, not an album with clear pockets that you slide the pictures into, like hers. The tome was elegantly bound, made of glossy, gold-edged pages, and each photo was cleverly designed. “Here, look, there you are.” Tzippy hastily turned back a few pages. “Here are all the family photos from the beginning. And look how cutely Shmuely is posing. It’s a good thing you brought him for the pictures!” “Right.” Miri couldn’t help but smile, seeing her son’s large eyes sparkle at her from the pages of the album. “What do you say, Zeidy? The photog-
rapher did a great job, didn’t he? Look, he took the curtain that was in the hall and turned it into a background on all these pages. Then, for the pictures at the seudah, he played the same game with the centerpieces. See how it looks like they’re actually behind the photos? And he also used this feature to make a shadow effect.” Zeidy nodded solemnly. “Do you think he’s really interested?” Miri muttered as she bent over from behind them to look at the album. “No less than the stories about the kids in your kindergartens. Mommy suggested that I bring the album to show Zeidy, if you really want to know,” Tzippy whispered back. Her expression was pleasant; she didn’t look angry or confrontational, and her tone was also neutral. But that did not soften her words. Tzippy continued leafing through the album, and their grandfather studied it quietly, nodding every so often. “Oh, here’s Winograd, my old neighbor,” he said suddenly. Miri tried to catch a glimpse from her seat on the side, but the album was centered between Tzippy and her grandfather,

and no matter how hard she craned her neck, she couldn’t see the mostly black pictures too clearly. Tzippy must have been showing Zeidy the spirited dancing on the men’s side. As if that interested him either. No, she was right; these pictures were really not captivating their

grandfather’s interest. Probably besides for that one with Winograd, his former neighbor, there was nothing to hold his concentration for more than five minutes. Really, what was Tzippy thinking? That he had the patience to go through five hundred photos, one by one? Didn’t she notice that his eyes were closing every few seconds? That certainly didn’t happen when Miri shared her stories about her preschool students. And Tzippy kept gushing on and on — she wouldn’t stop! Finally, after sitting in bored silence for a few minutes, Miri couldn’t restrain herself. “Okay, now let me see. Zeidy’s seen enough, right, Zeidy?” “Right.” Their grandfather smiled and nodded his head, just like he had done in response to Tzippy’s commentary. “Fine,” her younger sister relented. “You can look, but start from the beginning.” And she sat and smiled calmly as she listened to her sister’s admiring comments. Because when all was said and done, Miri couldn’t help but be complimentary. The wedding had been gorgeous, the “hall” and decor had been more than perfect, and in this album, it all looked three times as glamorous as it had been in real life. “Oh, I want to frame this picture to hang up on the wall here.” Tzippy
made two copies of this one, one for Mommy and one for you.” She looked at her nephew. “He’s such a cutie,” she said adoringly. “And I’m happy you were able to buy him that outfit. I mean, at least you got something out of this whole thing, too, right?” “Uh-huh.” Miri turned a page. “But those reprints — you know, besides for the album — I’m not sure Korman is paying for those. It’s not really part of the wedding expenses, you know? And over the last few days, I’ve been wondering how I’m supposed to start figuring out money and these kinds of things… you understand?” She smiled, but there was a frisson of tension in her voice. “Yes,” Miri said. She stood up. She walked over to the carriage she had borrowed from her sister-in-law, and rummaged in the old matching diaper bag. There was her wallet. “How much does it cost to develop a picture?” she asked, uber-politely. “You need money?” Zaidy asked, having just opened his eyes to see her taking out her wallet. “There’s some small change in the drawer here. Take as much as you need.” “I’m not the one who needs it,” Miri said, as she tugged the zipper open harshly. “It’s Tzippy who doesn’t have the one and a half shekels a copy of a photo of my Shmuely costs. But it’s alright, Saba; I can deal

with this hole in my wallet. I have lots of money, baruch Hashem. I even had a few hundred shekels to buy a wedding present for my dear sister; I’m so generous, in case you hadn’t heard.” She wouldn’t mention the new carriage she had dreamed about, which was now on hold, among other things, because she’d spent so much out of her own pocket — in addition to her ma’aser money — on Tzippy’s linen. She wouldn’t stoop that low. “So very generous,” she repeated as she nearly threw the two coins onto the table in the room. * * * * * Gustav didn’t move. He squinted as he pushed away the branches that were poking his face, and waited. Maybe it had been foolish to leave the Cohens’ house so quickly, but on the other hand, it was his only opportunity. If he would have waited for Ulush to return, she never would have let him go. Later, when Janek would have come home, it would have been even more complicated. It was very cold, and the moisture from the ground seeped into his clothes, but still he did not move. He’d change his clothes later; now it would not be wise to stand up, especially after he’d waited so long. Soon the boys in the orphanage would all go to sleep, and the path to the cellar would be clear. Even if they had appointed a new night counselor instead of Emil, he was supposed to patrol upstairs, near the beds, not near the cellar. After another fifteen minutes, Gustav finally saw the lights going out in the boys’ rooms, one after another. Only one small window at the end of the hallway remained dimly illuminated, though the entire ground floor was lit up. Gustav slowly stood up, stretching his back and his shoulders. He’d been sitting in this field for more than five hours, facing the back entrance and waiting for the right moment. With tiny steps, he moved closer to the wall, and then pressed himself against it. After a few more seconds, he reached the locked gate. He knew the pattern of the wrought iron bars very well, and it took him less than a minute to get to the other side. He hesitated for a moment. It was absolutely silent. Even the wind that had filled his ears throughout the hours he had been sitting in the field, waiting for night, was now still. He stood motionless, arms folded, not knowing what he was waiting for. After a few long moments, he began walking toward the familiar door, which was open wide. No one seemed to be around, so Gustav took a deep breath — and entered. Running silently and swiftly, he leaped down the stone stairs into the cellar, inhaling the smell of plum jam and pickled cucumbers that the cook stored down there. This was not the first time he was doing this in the dark. Once, when he was little, he’d even sneaked

down here in the middle of the night to nibble at the toast he had saved from breakfast. Theodore had nearly caught him then. He’d seen Gustav from afar, but hadn’t been able to identify which of the children he was. After a few minutes, he’d gone to make his rounds of the children’s beds to see who was awake. Theodore hadn’t found anyone up, or so he had thought. Gustav had always been able to convincingly pretend he was sleeping. Last night, as well, when Janek and Ulush had been talking in their living room, he had heard every word of their conversation. Janek had said it was sad to start life again from zero, and Ulush had said it was impossible to know what kind of wonderful families the children had come from. It was clear that “the children” referred to him and Edo; which other children could she be thinking about? Janek had said that this war had caused so much destruction, for years and generations to come, and who knew if it would ever be possible to repair the destruction that had been wrought. And then he had said that they all had to get out of the war, because in a lot of ways, they were really still in it. And when Ulush heard that, she had burst out crying and said that it was better for her to think about the children, and not about herself. At that point, Gustav must have fallen asleep, because he didn’t remember what happened after that. “Is somebody here?” Gustav didn’t move. He stood frozen in a corner, hoping with all his heart that the thin beam of light dancing on the floor and walls of the cellar would not shine on him. “Whoever is here, come out right away! I don’t allow children to enter the cellar without permission!” It was Theodore. Gustav suddenly felt a rush of longing for the man. But he didn’t move. He willed Theodore to move on, so he could get to the next corner. Under the tile that he had been able to remove — with the help of the pocketknife Theodore had once
130 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 18, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
given him — were the treasures that he had forgotten to take when he’d run away from this place. The pocketknife itself was also supposed to be there, and it was a shame to leave it. It was a good one. Theodore had given it to him as a gift the first time he’d gone to their church. “When I find you, there will be big trouble. I suggest that you come out right away and admit that you decided to come down here and help yourself to pickled cucumbers!” Theodore paused, and then raised his voice. “Do you hear me? Whoever you are, come out right now, or you’re going to get a lashing like you haven’t gotten in a long time!” Gustav still did not move. Theodore finally fell silent. The beam of his flashlight danced around for a few more minutes near the entrance. For a moment it seemed to be drawing closer to Gustav, and then it flashed around in broad circles over and over before fading into the darkness. The wooden steps squeaked with each footstep. Gustav remained there, in the corner, waiting. He had no idea how much time had passed, but it felt like at least ten minutes. Maybe twenty. Only then did he emerge from the corner he was in, holding his shoes in his hands. His eyes flitted in every direction as he approached the tile and removed it. Everything was waiting for him as he had left it — three colorful candies from Emil, the pocketknife, and the folded paper that Edo’s mother had given him so many years ago. He stuck all the things into his pocket, returned the tile to its place, and began walking back to the entrance of the cellar. The wooden stairs squeaked slightly as he climbed them, but the noise of the rain that had begun to fall outside swallowed any sounds that he made. Now he just had five more stairs to go — “I’ve been waiting for you,” said Theodore, leaning on the wall of the landing, languidly peeling an apple. “For some reason, I had a feeling it might be you.” To be continued...

A PEDIATRICIAN WHO LOVED HIS PATIENTS DR. SEYMOUR (SHLOMO) GORELICK, A”H BY: CHANIE SPIRA
Walking into the Hillcrest Medical Pediatrics office after a sleepless night, my screaming infant and my exhausted state were no match for Dr. Gorelick’s smile. As soon as I stepped in, Dr. Seymour Gorelick waved through the glass window — where he was doubtlessly joking with a nurse, patient, or patient’s family — and my fears and bad mood evaporated. Our dear doctor, in my mind, was ageless. Glasses sliding down his nose, suspenders clipped on tightly, Dr. Gorelick would shuffle into the room, smiling in his inimitable manner, often munching on popcorn. Then he’d start talking to all the sheine meidelach in the room, and all the boo-boos would go the way they came. He’d lovingly pick up my baby, kiss her forehead and promise me that she was the most gorgeous baby in the office. (Until the next baby was born and earned the coveted title that every single one of his patients carried with pride.) I thought I was the only one he knew so well. Which doctor knows his patient’s home address and who their neighbors are? He knew that I lived under my grandparents and always had a fresh quip about that fact. Come November, our entire extended family would participate in
136 / THE MONSEY VIEW
Dr. Gorelick’s annual flu shot event hosted by our grandparents. He would come equipped with rolls of stickers and shiny bandages to soothe the prick, and afterward, the family would present him with a gift and songs. We would marvel at the octogenarian who understood the children well enough to help them choose their stickers. Whoever I spoke to on Thursday had treasure troves of personal, heartwarming anecdotes to share. Seems like every one of his patients shared our VIP status. Our unassuming doctor was truly a giant in middos and loving care. Just ask any of the sheine meidelach he saw every day. All meidelach were shein, and he had a good word and joke for all. When the office switched over to a computerized database, “I needed to get a heimishe programmer to do the job,” Dr. Gorelick would say. “Who else would understand that there are four Yaakov Yosef B.’s in New Square, and they all lived on the same street? And that three Avraham Rosenbergs share the same birthday?” He tapped into the spirit of every school, and knew just how to touch each student. “Is your teacher’s name Mrs. Hager or Mrs. Twersky?” he’d ask a patient who’d tell him she attends
Viznitz school. Whether he aged at all is debatable. His jokes remained the same, his smile remained the same, and his infallible memory never failed him. Which boy didn’t learn how triplet boys can have brisos on three separate days and where in davening the name Dovid is spelled with a yud? “I think he secretly had a degree in psychology,” Mrs. B. says. Three months ago, her son was hospitalized with severe stomach pains while learning in a yeshivah overseas. Sick with worry, Mrs. B. called her go-to medical consultant. Dr. Gorelick immediately procured all the blood work and calmed her down, enabling her to regain peace of mind for the first time. And he was right. Everything turned out fine, and like the caring doctor he was, he remembered to call and check up on him later that week. “Hey, I see a Muller 425-0098*!”
he would tell each of the Muller* sisters each time they visited. He was probably one of the only people who remembered their mother’s phone number from twenty years back. Mrs. L. was truly sad on Thursday after she heard the news that her family’s dear doctor had passed on. She shared that her husband had been off insurance for a while, and as Murphy’s Law dictates, he kept on getting sick. She asked Dr.
Gorelick what to do about his ailments, and the doctor urged her to have him accompany their child who had a visit scheduled so that he could examine her husband for free. On Friday, I reached Linda, the one-of-a-kind office secretary at Hillcrest Pediatrics. After the doctor, she’s been on staff for the longest amount of time. As soon as I told her the purpose of my call, she said, “He always kissed the babies.” Can you imagine? He saw hundreds of babies a week, and each one got a kiss. He had all the love and heart in the world, and each of his patients were fortunate enough to get a chunk of it. Then Linda added, “He always treated each one of us with such respect.” I found her second statement as incredible as the first. He’d been their boss for decades, and he never once yelled or insulted them. No one ever saw him running, frowning or raising his voice. His

• The practice moved to its current location at 205 Airport Executive Boulevard fifteen years ago.
• The address back then was 263 N. They were later joined by Dr. Radford, Dr. Kramer and Dr. Seth.

even-keeled personality and humor were what attracted thousands of families to the office. One old-time patient shared, “One of my babies was really not feeling well, and while examining the child, Dr. Gorelick showed real concern — but then I heard him go into the next room and joke with the next patient! At first I was hurt — how could he joke when he’d been so concerned a few minutes earlier?” Later, when she asked him about it, he explained, “You know the difference between concerned and worried? I’m concerned about your baby, but I’m not worried. And we’ve got to keep the spirits up!” “He always called to check up on my kids,” a few women tell me. “I consulted with him on every medical issue,” says a grandmother of many. “From thyroid issues to cardiac issues, he had clarity and insight to share in so many areas.” Gitty T. was once in the hospital with her baby, who was sick with pneumonia. She was worried about her baby, who was all of a few weeks old. All she wanted was to go home. She called the doctor. “When can I go home already?” “Today!” Dr. Gorelick answered immediately. Gitty wanted to dance. “But the baby must stay,” he said a moment later. The wisecrack had already lifted her mood. Whenever my mother would ask Dr. Gorelick whether or not to administer antibiotics for an ear infection, he would call her into his private office. In a serious manner, he’d take out a pad and pencil and draw a chuppah. In a grave voice, he’d say, “The goal is to get the child to the chuppah. He’ll get there with or without antibiotics.” The office was his life, his patients were his priority. His presence will be missed by the thousands of patients who found his office to be a welcoming, respectful and loving haven. Rachel, his devoted nurse, said, “He did what he loved until the last day.” He was still in the office on Thursday when he felt unwell and collapsed. He passed away shortly thereafter. It’s hard to believe that our beloved doctor’s office has lost such an integral part of my childhood and my children’s childhood. Doctor’s visits will never be the same. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Gorelick’s dear and devoted wife, Sue, who has stood at his side all these years, and to all of his secretaries and nurses who will miss his good morning, good word and good heart. Dozens of patients and friends of Dr. Seymour Gorelick, a”h, attended the levayah on Friday, 13 Elul, 5779. His sons and Dr. Risa Gorelick all delivered heartfelt eulogies that truly encapsulated his life, and then Dr. Gorelick, a”h, was laid to rest in the Gates of Zion cemetery. He was 86 years old.

Trump to Announce Gun Control Legislation BACKGROUND: According to recent reports, President Trump is set to announce a set of proposals on gun control as he seeks to get gun control legislation passed by Congress. According to CBS News, the White House has been talking to Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT), Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey (RPA) about the proposed legislation. This is not the first
144 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 18, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
time that Toomey and Manchin have collaborated on the issue of guns. In 2013 they sponsored a gun control amendment that ultimately failed. What the president’s proposal will include is unclear, but all of the above senators are on record backing stronger background checks and closing existing loopholes. In the most recent Democratic debate, presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke called for a mandatory buyback of all military-style weapons such as the AR-15 and AK-47. However, his proposal received sharp criticism from his fellow Democrat, Senator Chris Coons (D-CT). Coons said that such extreme proposals would only serve to undermine the bipartisan effort for sensible gun control legislation. Senator Toomey put out
a statement backing Senator Coons, saying that “this rhetoric (of O’Rourke) undermines and hurts bipartisan efforts to actually make progress on common sense gun safety efforts, like expanding background checks.” WHY IT MATTERS: Mass shootings have plagued
cities and towns across America. Ever since the most recent shootings in Dayton and El Paso, there is a strong consensus that something must be done. Polling data shows that a majority of Americans want the government to act. Democrats have generally been on record favoring gun control, but their efforts have been stymied by Republican opposition and by the efforts of a robust Second Amendment lobby. Republicans are now concerned that growing demand for sensible gun legislation among suburban Americans may cost them support in the upcoming elections. Therefore, there appears to be a window of opportunity for a bipartisan approach to some limited form of gun control legislation. However, to pass legislation, the president must overcome strong opposition from some Republican senators such as Ted Cruz (R-TX). Cruz has vowed to oppose any legislation that goes as far as the 2013 Toomey-Manchin amendment. The president can also expect strong opposition from the NRA (National Rifle Association), which has been vocal and forceful in fighting any new restrictions on the sale of guns.
Iran Looms Large BACKGROUND: National Security Advisor John Bolton resigned (or was fired) this past Tuesday, purportedly over differences that he had with the president regarding maintaining the campaign of maximum pressure on Iran. On Shabbos, Iranian-backed Houthi rebels successfully attacked Saudi oil refineries, disrupting 50 percent of the Saudi daily oil output and causing crude prices to rise. This past week, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated that President Trump is willing to meet with Iranian President Rouhani without any preconditions. IN-DEPTH: On July 14, 2015, the JCPOA (Joint Com-
prehensive Plan of Action) was signed between the government of Iran and the P5 (China, France, Russia, UK, USA), + 1 (Germany) and the European Union. The agreement placed restrictions on Iran’s ability to enrich uranium that is necessary to create nuclear weapons. It also implemented an intrusive monitoring system overseen by the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Association). Oversight was enhanced by modern technologies that would enable the detection of Iranian infractions. In exchange, Iran would receive sanction relief and have its overseas assets unfrozen. The deal received much criticism as it did not deal with Iran’s many nefarious activities such as support for Hezbollah in Lebanon and other terror groups. With the economic benefits reaped from the deal, Iran would be free to increase its support for such groups and continue to be a destabilizing force in the Middle East. Additionally, the deal put no limits on Iran’s ability to develop missiles and rockets. Lastly, the deal had a sunset clause of ten years, when Iran would once again be free to proceed and expand its nuclear programs. The deal’s supporters acknowledged its limitations, but insisted that realistically this was the best deal that Iran would agree to sign. They argued that the nuclear issue was an overwhelming priority, and even though Iran could potentially continue to be a conventional menace, the nuclear threat was successfully removed. Furthermore, there was nothing in the deal that would stop countries from sanctioning Iran if it continued to be a state sponsor of terrorism. Lastly, if warranted, there was nothing in the agreement that precluded the reimplementation of sanctions or even the use of military force against Iran after the deal sunsetted. The deal received strong opposition from most Republicans and from a majority of the Israeli political establishment. However, after the agreement was implemented, many Israeli and American military and intelligence officials agreed that the deal was working. U.S. and Israeli intelligence believed that Iran was abiding by the agreement. The United States Director of National Intelligence, Dan Cotes, and IDF Chief of Staff, Gadi Eisenkott, both testified that the deal in its current limited form was working. On May 8, 2018, President Donald Trump announced that he was withdrawing the United States from the JCPOA and reimplementing sanctions on
September 18, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 145 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
a sweeter way to say shanah tovah to the whole family Iran as part of a campaign of maximum pressure. He called the deal negotiated by President Obama “a horrible one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made.” He claimed that he would be able to force Iran back to the table to negotiate a much better deal. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly backed Trump’s withdrawal from the agreement, as did U.S. ally and Iranian foe, Saudi Arabia. However, the deal did not entirely collapse as the European Union actively sought to preserve it and work around U.S. sanctions. Trump was unable to get American allies on board with his policies, and the campaign of maximum pressure was mostly an American enterprise. Facing increased pressure and economic stress, Iran began to lash out. It threatened to back out of the nuclear deal and began to enrich uranium in violation of the agreement. Iran seized ships in the Straits of Hormuz and downed a U.S. drone. These attacks received only a minimal response. Iran continued with its support of Hezbollah, Bashar Assad of Syria and the Houthi rebels in Iran. On Shabbos, Iran upped the ante with the Houthi attack on the Saudi refineries. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo put the responsibility for the attack squarely on Iran. At the recent G7 meeting in France, French President Emanuel Macron sought to set up a meeting between President Trump and Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif. The meeting did not materialize, but the idea took root. Iranian President Rouhani will be in the United States for the upcoming meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. According to Secretary Pompeo, President Trump is willing to meet Rouhani without preconditions. So far, Rouhani has refused to meet with Trump unless some sanctions are removed or weakened, hence the disagreement that led to Bolton’s resignation/firing.

WHY IT MATTERS: Trump needs a foreign policy win. His engagement with North Korea has not yet produced the desired results. His attempts to engage the Taliban and negotiate a withdrawal from Afghanistan backfired and failed. So far, his Iranian policy has hit a dead end. Trump will need to show that he can get a deal done, and that his campaign of maximum pressure can secure a better arrangement with Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu initially opposed Trump’s meeting with Iranian officials. However, he has since expressed support for Trump’s negotiating capabilities and expressed the belief that Trump will hold a tight line in negotiations. Should Trump succeed in securing a better deal with Iran, it will burnish his credentials as a capable statesman. It will enable him to fight off Democratic attempts to portray him as a novice who is out of his depth and will protect him from accusations of foreign policy incompetence.

Preparing meat for yom tov is a labor of love. Enhance your menu with these gourmet dishes to dress up your yom tov table. These meats freeze beautifully. Here’s a tip to avoid the necessity of basting meat when baking in liquid: Line the pan with a piece of parchment paper large enough to wrap around the meat, and then cover the pan tightly with silver foil. This method helps the meat retain its moisture throughout the cooking process.

Club Steak Tower This recipe is a yom tov staple in my home. It has a really delicious taste and a gorgeous presentation.
CLUB STEAKS 4 club steaks 4 large Spanish onions Oil
CLUB STEAKS 1. Slice the onions into rings. Saute in oil on medium-high heat, stirring frequently until caramelized. Set aside. 2. Sprinkle the steaks with salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a skillet. Sear for two minutes on each side.
3. Transfer the steaks to a 9x13 pan. Rub in the crushed garlic, and top with half of the onions, reserving the rest for the topping. Add the wine.
3 fresh garlic cloves, crushed
4. Bake covered at 400° for one hour.
½ cup red wine
POTATOES 4 russet potatoes 3 garlic cloves Salt and pepper, to taste
TOPPING Mushrooms 1 lb. baby bella mushrooms, peeled, cleaned and sliced 2 T. oil ¼ tsp. salt Dash of pepper Remaining caramelized onions Chicken 1 lb. dark chicken stew ¼ cup oil ¼ cup mayonnaise 1 tsp. onion soup mix 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. paprika ¼ tsp. black pepper
Note: If you don’t use meat, you can substitute turkey steaks for the club steaks. Sprinkle the steaks with salt and black pepper, dip into flour, sear and top with half of the onions and add wine. Bake at 300° for 3 hours, until the liquid evaporates.
MASHED POTATOES 1. Cook potatoes with garlic cloves. When draining, reserve a 1/2 cup liquid. Once potatoes are mashed, add the reserved liquid. The potatoes will look wet immediately, but the water will be absorbed after a while, resulting in a fluffier texture. This step is especially helpful when preparing potatoes on erev yom tov for the following day.
TOPPING 1. Mix mushrooms with oil, salt and pepper. Spread out in a single layer in a pan. Roast for 20 minutes at 400°. 2. Mix chicken marinade ingredients and marinate for an hour. 3. Lay chicken in a single layer in a pan. Top with mushrooms and other half of caramelized onions. 4. Bake covered at 400° for 40 minutes.
TO ASSEMBLE Place a layer of mashed potatoes over each club steak. Top with mushroom-onion-chicken mixture. The steaks and chicken mixture freeze very well. Note: All this sounds like a lot of cooking time, but it really can be combined since everything bakes at the same temperature. Braised Brisket This is a yom tov family favorite — and so simple to prepare. It’s a good thing this recipe calls for such an affordable cut of meat, since I can never make enough.
INGREDIENTS 4 lb. second-cut brisket
3 leeks, white parts only
2 stalks celery
6 garlic cloves
1½ cups grape juice
1½ cups chicken broth
DIRECTIONS 1. Season brisket with salt and pepper. Rub into meat. 2. Heat oil in large skillet. When oil is hot, sear brisket on high heat until browned on all sides. (Tip: Use two spatulas to easily turn over the roast.) Transfer to a large baking pan. 3. Dice the onions, leeks, celery and garlic. Saute on medium-high until soft, stirring frequently. 4. Pour vegetables over brisket. Add the grape juice and chicken soup. 5. Bake covered at 300° for 4 hours, with parchment paper loosely wrapped around on all sides to retain moisture. 6. For best results when slicing, refrigerate the meat and gravy separately overnight, and place the meat into the freezer for half an hour before slicing. Remove from freezer and slice. Brisket gets sliced against the grain. 7. Slice and pour gravy over meat.

The last few decades of the nineteenth century saw a degree of wealth that was not seen in this country before or after. Glorious mansions... Servants at one’s beck and call... Art collections to rival those of museums... There was no end to the money, no end to the riches. But was that the entire story? The term “Gilded Age” was coined way back in 1873 — in the title of a satirical novel written by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner, which mocked the social issues of the time. Because if one thing was certain, it was this: The era may have appeared glamorous, but there was much grime hiding under that veneer of gold.

PEELING BACK THE LAYERS
In the late 1800s, the explosion of industrialization meant there was more money streaming through the economy, prompting an exponential rise in the wages of skilled workers. But the peace of mind the increased paychecks brought came along with a flood of immigrants entering the country — because why not? There was money to be made, fortunes to be found. And then things soured fast. With the new wave of immigration, there was a sudden oversupply of workers, which soon translated into a desperate and unhappy working class, unchecked dangers at the workplace, and appalling liv-
ing conditions — while railroad and business magnates grew ever wealthier. This contrast between the fabulously wealthy nouveau riche and their poor and underprivileged employees provided much fodder for cartoonists at the time, who found it only too easy to depict the tremendous gap between the classes. And since money is power, at least when it comes to politics, it was the wealthy, again, who had the upper hand when it came to electing the defenders of the Constitution. It was only too easy for the upper class to back politicians who would then make sure financial monopolies remained unregulated, allowing the money machines to continue grinding off the backs of the working class.
GRAND TOURS AND GRANDER HOMES
This cartoon depicts the wealthy, sitting on bags of “millions,” floating along on a raft held up by weary workers.
In an almost direct offense to their impoverished workers, the enormously wealthy families of the Gilded Age lived in luxury and opulence to a degree that is rarely found today. Most notably, the nouveau riche of the time — including the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, Astors, Berwinds, Carnegies, and so on — built mansions that were so incredibly magnificent that they more resembled museums and palaces than places to reside. There was subtle (and often not-soThis cartoon portrays the way American “moneybags” and subtle) competition among upper-class monopolies held total control over the Senate, thus managing to fill families when it came to building these their moneybags some more. mansions and establishing themselves as people worth rubbing shoulders with. MILLIONAIRE’S ROW, NYC, AND THE VANDERBILTS This mansion, known as Petit Chateau, was built for William Kissam Vanderbilt and his wife, and it served as their stepping stone into high society. As magnificent as this mansion was, it took a social visit from a member of the established Astor family to prove to the world that this nouveau riche couple had “made it.” The Petit Chateau was torn down in 1926, and today a Zara store is located in the new building’s retail space. This mansion was built by Cornelius Vanderbilt II, an elder brother of William Kissam Vanderbilt. Cornelius II used his father’s inheritance to throw down three houses to make place for this beautiful new home, and the popular belief was that he’d set out to dwarf his brother’s home. At the time, this mansion was the largest singlefamily home in New York City. This home was also torn down in 1926, and a department store took its place. These three mansions, known as the Triple Palaces, were built for the three daughters of yet a third Vandervilt brother. Another industrialist by the name of Henry Clay Frick once passed these homes and declared, “This is all I shall ever want.” While Frick managed to lease one of the three homes at one point, he never succeeded in purchasing it. Ironically, while these homes were since torn down (the stores of H&M, Juicy Couture, etc., stand in their place today), Frick’s home still stands.

THE OTHER HALF OF THE HOUSEHOLD The upper floors of Gilded Age mansions held the servants’ quarters, which were divided into two wings — one for the women and one for the men. Each bedroom contained a plain bed, dresser and washing stand, and since there were very many servants to a household, there were very many rooms… A full staff was required to keep a house of this size running. That’s the reason upper-class families would generally employ four chamber and parlor maids, who would tend to the family’s quarters and the downstairs living areas; a laundress, who was tasked with washing and caring for an overabundance of clothes; a linen woman, who would do the ironing; scrubbing maids, who were tasked with more heavy cleaning; a butler, whose duties included overseeing the proper running of the home; four footmen, who waited tables and assisted otherwise around the house; and, finally, a head chef and two kitchen assistants, who prepared all the food. Generally, most of the staff was comprised of immigrants. All the members of the staff were expected to rise at 6 a.m. each morning and head to bed at 11 p.m. They were to check in and out each time they left the house, and after a day or afternoon off, were expected to be back at the house at 11 p.m. There was also clear etiquette to be followed when in domestic service, and an article published in 1901 titled “A Few Rules for the Manners of Servants in Good Families” listed a few basic rules for the members of domestic staff to abide by. First, a servant was always to stand quietly, with their hands still, when

as gilt and plaster moldings, and attendees of a formal meal would be waited upon by footmen standing alongside the walls. Another room in the home, typically an office or library, would be designated for the man of the house. This rich-colored or wood-paneled room would contain bookshelves, comfortable chairs, a large desk and some more paintings. Then there was the salon, which was a room used primarily by the women of the home. It would be designed in softer colors and filled with light-colored furniture and delicate tea tables — a space perfect for women to entertain their friends. Upstairs would find the family bedrooms, with a separate dressing room and bathroom for each member of the family. After 1900, newer mansions introduced the showerhead, which was a newfangled piece of plumbing that was fast gaining popularity. And if one mansion boasted showerheads, then so would the next...

Rudolph Stanish had a neat list that included all the qualities he’d need to succeed as chef, and it’s possible that employees in other fields would do well to glance at a few items on this list as well… 1.
Impeccable manners and a neat mode of dress
Complete devotion and loyalty to his employers
Endurance to get through long working days
Meticulous attention to detail
Habitual use of short answers like “Yes, ma’am” or “No, ma’am”
The ability to create new menus and recipes

being spoken to. A servant was also not to talk to his or her employers until spoken to. The only exception to this rule was when a member of the staff was to deliver a message, but even then, it was to be repeated in as few words as possible. Overall, servants were expected to know their place and quietly attend to the family’s needs. According to Norah Kavanagh, who was a chambermaid at the Breakers in Newport, her job was not demeaning in the least. She knew what was expected of her and did it well. She was proud to be appreciated for her unassuming manner, intelligence and cleanliness, and she never sought employment in a different field. While at work, Kavanagh wore a simple black dress and white apron — her maid’s uniform, which she’d change daily. Her duties included cleaning the hallways, bed-
rooms and bathrooms, and supplying them with fresh linens at least once a day. According to Norah, she filled a role that was very necessary during that era, and in contrast to the scores of pathetic and penniless immigrants, she was very pleased at the opportunities immigrating to the United States had provided for her. Rudolph Stanish was also in domestic service as a youngster, serving as a kitchen boy in another Newport mansion. Looking back at his years in service, he remembers some of his duties. “As a kitchen boy I shined the stove, this monstrous stove,” he said. The daily polishing of the “monstrous” stove required loads of blackening polish and large muslin rags, and that was only the beginning... Then came the brass water tank, which was also polished daily, only with brass polish, and the many copper pots and pans, which he’d polish with a paste made with flour, salt and vinegar. Then came the washing of all the muslin rags used to do the kitchen cleaning,
because that was also the kitchen boy’s job... Those would have to be soaked and scrubbed until they came out perfectly clean. Stanish was also responsible for cleaning and preparing vegetables and unpacking groceries. Depending on the amount of guests attending each meal, this often amounted to quite a bit of work. But he was a good worker, willing to work and eager to please. “It was a style of living that... I can see the beauty of it now,” Stanish said. “It made wonderful people out of the likes of us… It was a stepping stone.” And indeed it was. With his bucketloads of polish and determination, Stanish eventually advanced up the ladder until he began cooking at 18 years of age. Eventually, he became head chef in another household.
THE END OF AN ERA So… what happened to all of these grand homes? Why is it that so many were demolished, and the remaining few operate as museums? Why did the owners flee? What knocked over the first domino in the row was the introduction of the income tax in 1913. Suddenly, wealthy business owners found that their coffers were emptying a little faster than they did in the past. Then, just three years later, the modern estate tax was established, upsetting the coffers once again… With less money to spare, it was suddenly becoming increasingly difficult for employers to hold on to their staff. Then came World War I, which very much changed the way the middle class looked at employment, and this, too, caused a great decrease in domestic service. With these changes came a sudden burst of home sales, especially in New York City, and real estate developers quickly realized how much money was hiding in the properties under these mansions. Soon tremendous department stores and other commercial buildings took the places of these palatial homes, and the face of Fifth Avenue changed drastically. For some, the selling of their mansions simply meant moving on to another home, but some took advantage of public curiosity and allowed people to tour these homes — the proceeds went to charity — prior to their demolishment. Yet other homes — think Newport mansions — were sold to preservation societies, and eventually, these opened to the public for good. Nowadays these mansions serve as museums, portraying the extravagant lifestyle of the wealthy during the Gilded Age. Because no matter the grime hiding underneath, there’s no doubt the gilding was ever glamorous.
LET’S GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT:
How will taking off an Ayin Horah help me?
magine there is a pipeline extending from the heavens into your window. At the upper edge of the pipeline are sacks of diamonds and jewels waiting to be dropped into your home. Unfortunately, the pipeline is clogged. The bounty cannot reach you.
Such is the effect of an Ayin Horah. It clogs the pipeline to Heaven where infinite bounty awaits us. Whether its Shidduchim, Shalom bayis, Parnassa, Hatzlacha, an Ayin Horah steals the brachah that is bound for you.
Getting cleared from an Ayin Horah effectively unclogs the pipeline. It allows the good that is waiting to reach you unbothered. The effects of Ayin Horah are many, too numerous to list. So if you find yourself in any situation where no amount of Hishtadlus gets you the results, it’s worthwhile to check for an Ayin Horah. ENDORSED BY MANY RABBANIM

Hands trembling, a pale Anschel Moses Rothschild emptied the contents of his pockets and counted the sum total. It was less than half of the 500 gulden being asked of him. Without a word said in self-defense, Anschel Moses gave over the money, promising to repay the remainder in installments.

ust a few months earlier, before Anschel Moses married and moved to Sniatyn, he had served as the shamash for Reb Hershel of Zidichov, enjoying a special relationship with the Rebbe. Suddenly, he found himself suspected of pilfering a precious pouch from the Rebbe’s personal drawer! Few knew about the hidden fortune, a fund for almanos and yesomim, and it was almost natural to assume that Anschel Moses, who had access to the Rebbe’s home, was involved. He probably needed money for his chasunah expenses and planned to repay it at some point, they thought. And so, for the next while, Anschel Moses forked over every last penny he earned in the small shop his father-in-law had opened for him. After all, the debt was his to pay. A few months later, the Rebbe was notified by the police that his pouch had been discovered. Shortly before Pesach, the gentile cleaning woman in Reb Hershel’s home had spotted the bulging purse while tidying the Rebbe’s room. She pocketed it and gleefully showed their newly-found fortune to her husband. The very next day, her husband took one coin and headed for the tavern. When the formerly too-poor-for-beverages peasant arrived for the third day in a row with a whole silver coin to spend at the tavern, the innkeeper was suspicious. He reported the peasant to the police, leading to the finding of the Rebbe’s precious pouch. The Rebbe wanted to meet with Anschel Moses immediately. “Why didn’t you tell me you were innocent?” Reb Hershel asked, begging forgiveness. “The Rebbe’s distress over the lost tzedakah money disturbed me greatly. I knew that the Rebbe would never accept a penny from me if I were to tell that I had not stolen it…” Reb Hershel warmly blessed Anschel Moses that he merit great riches so he would always be able to help the poor and needy, and he suggested that Anschel

years old, was forced to take over the family finances rather than learn in yeshivah. Meyer Anschel found an apprenticeship at the Oppenheimer banking house in Hanover. There, he gained enough experience to open his own business once he returned to Frankfurt. Soon, his reputation as a brilliant man made his financial advice highly sought-after by the nobles of Germany. He forged a close relationship with Crown Prince Wilhelm I of Hesse, the extremely wealthy heir to the German empire. The prince, as well as other noblemen, implicitly trusted Meyer Anschel to deal with their financial needs. In the 1780s, Meyer Anschel formed a partnership with his brother Kalman, and the Rothschild banking business was officially born. Still, Meyer Anschel remained a Torah-true Jew. He never spoke German, but managed all of his affairs in his native tongue, Yiddish. Meyer Anschel and his wife, Gitel, had nineteen children together; sadly, only ten survived infancy. Their house in the Jewish ghetto was a mere fourteen feet wide, and the entire family slept in one room. Even as they prospered, the family continued to live in their simple home in the ghetto rather than move out to the wealthier neighborhoods of Frankfurt. Moses travel to Frankfurt where he’d have a greater chance of success in business. The bracha of Reb Hershel of Zidichov came true on a grand scale. Anschel Moses became a successful merchant, and the family wealth grew exponentially in the generations that followed.
The Start of an Empire The first Rothschilds lived in a modest home at 148 Judengasse in the Jewish ghetto in Frankfurt, Germany. There was a red shield on the house, known as a “rot schild” in German, leading to the family taking on the surname that would soon gather global acclaim. Anschel Moses passed away at the young age of 45, and his eldest son, Meyer Anschel, who was but eleven

A Legacy of Integrity During the Napoleonic upheaval in Germany, Prince Wilhelm was forced to flee. He secretly entrusted his entire wealth to Meyer Anschel Rothschild for safekeeping. Meyer Anschel was indeed a trustworthy keeper. When Napoleon’s officers arrived at his doorstep demanding he turn over the prince’s riches, Meyer Anschel gave over his own fortune rather than divulge the whereabouts of the prince’s possessions he was responsible for. By the time the political unrest calmed down and Prince Wilhelm was able to return, Meyer Anschel had already passed away. However, he had revealed to his sons the secret hiding place in their home and instructed them to return every last coin to the prince when the time would come. The prince was amazed. Did You Know? •
Many of the Rothschilds married cousins, often joining two branches of the family living in different countries through marriage. As of 1905, exactly half of Rothschild descendants had married family members!
The genealogy of the Rothschild family reveals the same first names again and again. Most notably, sons adopted the name of their father as their middle name.
The Nazi seizure of the Austrian banking branch narrowed down the Rothschild banking empire to two strongholds — Britain and France. (The Frankfurt and Naples branches had already been closed down at that point.)
The title “Baron Rothschild” is currently held by Jacob Rothschild of Berkshire, United Kingdom, who became the 4th Baron Rothschild in 1990. He does not have any male descendants, making him the final link in the son-after-son line of barony.
The Rothschild family is commonly considered the world’s most affluent family. In April 2017, the combined net worth of the extended Rothschild family was estimated at $400 billion.

been highly trustworthy, relinquishing his personal wealth in order to keep the prince’s treasures safe, but the valuables were returned with interest on the investments Meyer Anschel had made with the money.
Going Global Meyer Anschel’s sons continued the family tradition, expanding the Rothschild banking empire. The eldest son remained in Frankfurt, and the other four sons went on to open banking branches in key European locations — Vienna, Paris, London and Naples. The brothers maintained contact, passing secret messages to each other, thus growing into a world power, actively influencing global affairs. They funded construction of early railroads, provided loans to European governments and helped finance Britain’s opposition to Napoleon. And these were just a few of their large-scale endeavors. The French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars at the turn of the 18th century were pain points for most of Europe. But for the Rothschild family, it was a source of wealth. The Rothschilds were heavily involved in loans and the transfer of finances. They also traded essential products such as ammunition, wheat and cotton, earning a nice profit. When peace finally reigned, the Rothschild coffers continued to fill, this time thanks to the Industrial Revolution. The Rothschild family jumped onto the bandwagon of economic growth, making large investments in the railway, coal, iron-working, oil and metal industries. In the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, the huge loans provided by the Rothschild bankers led to their becoming officially recognized as nobles. This turned the Rothschilds into the first Jewish aristocratic family.
The Ranks of Aristocracy The five founding brothers were strangers in their new countries. Unfamiliar with the language and customs, they strived to integrate, but were still targets of
“I WANT YOU TO KNOW AND REMEMBER THAT A JEW IN GENERAL, AND A ROTHSCHILD IN PARTICULAR, MUST ALWAYS BE HONEST AND KEEP HIS WORD.” –Meyer Anschel Rothschild, in a message to his sons regarding the eventual return of Prince Wilhelm’s fortune, which he was safeguarding at the time. Indeed, the Rothschilds became known for their honesty, trustworthiness — and philanthropy.

jealousy and competition from the locals. Their children, in contrast, grew up with the advantages of higher education and culture, and they were nurtured in an extremely worldly existence. By the time they entered the family business, they were sophisticated nationals. This enabled them to assume positions of leadership with ease. The Rothschilds became known for their remarkable aptitude at seizing every lucrative opportunity and transitioning seamlessly between business and political ideals. Perhaps some of their success could
Over in England, Lionel Nathan de Rothschild, son of the original Rothschild brother who settled in London, rose to a record position of prominence. He joined the House of Commons in the British parliament, becoming the first frum Yid to serve there. And even though he was in a position of such importance, he aspired to find his place in the upper class European society without compromising on his Jewish identity. When he was elected in 1847, for instance, he refused to remove his hat or swear the oath of office in order to be seated. This worked for him, and soon he earned the title “Baron.” Among the elite aristocracy in the United Kingdom, “Baron Rothschild,” became a title of nobility,
be attributed to two key guidelines that their predecessor, Meyer Anschel, set down: “Always conduct your business dealings jointly, and never aim for excessive profits.” Many of his descendants followed his example and did business with the government. And nearly all of them continued the Rothschild tradition of philanthropy, donating huge sums of money to diverse causes. Hospitals, libraries, nursing homes, orphanages, soup kitchens and dental clinics — countless organizations and institutions were established and funded by the Rothschilds. Thus, the Rothschilds

accompanied by prestige and honor. Starting with Baron Lionel Nathan, the head of the family’s British branch of the Rothschild family came to be considered the unofficial head of British Jewry for generations to follow. Lionel Nathan single-handedly funded a number of Jewish schools throughout the country. He also tested a new concept, building low-cost housing to help the poor. His philanthropy extended to global causes, too, and he donated unusually large amounts for Irish famine relief. He was reelected four times, and was undisputedly an important, aristocratic citizen of the United Kingdom. With time, though the Rothschilds remained proudly Jewish, many of them sadly relinquished their real connection with Yiddishkeit.
An Edifice of Philanthropy The Rothschild tradition of benevolence can be traced back to the founder of the banking business, Meyer Anschel. Despite his generosity, however, he did not seek the appreciation of his recipients, but would shy away from any form of thanks. Rather, he would rush off immediately after tossing coins into the hands of a beggar, preferring to be rewarded directly from Heaven. This towering edifice of philanthropy spanning generations was erected thanks to the wishes of Reb Hershel of Zidichov — for riches so great that Anschel Moses and his descendants would always be able to help the poor and needy. Indeed, the number of beneficiaries who owe a debt of gratitude to the Rothschild family for their generosity might just be nearly as vast as the family’s wealth itself.

Becoming A Butler A certificate of butling from a reputable institution can be earned in 10 weeks with about 800 hours of intensive training. Butler salaries range from $50,000 to $150,000 annually, and usually include benefits plus room and board.
A Worldwide Demand For Butlers
A butler can expect to work roughly 60 hours a week.
It is common for the well-to-do in European countries such as Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium to hire butlers.
Most butlers have 4 weeks paid leave per year.
Wealthy families in China, India and Arab countries frequently employ western-trained butlers to manage their homes because having a butler is considered a sign of prestige.
The International Guild of Butlers currently has about 10,000 active members. More than 35 percent of these members are from the United States.
In America, butlers are often hired as personal assistants to CEOs, as well as managers of the homes of the rich.
Not all butlers are associated with the Guild. There are approximately a few million unregistered butlers in the world.

Butling The butler is considered the highest ranking member of the household staff. Principal is the term a butler uses to refer to his employer. Some butlers prefer to be called a household manager or an estate manager. Discreet and invisible — those are the butler’s buzz words. Butlers are expected to be trustworthy and to maintain high standards of privacy for their clients. It’s not just private homes that hire butlers. The hotel industry often hires butlers to provide hospitality services for their clients. This may include arranging dry cleaning, serving drinks, booking outings and more.
The Uniform Though the traditional image of a butler includes a three-piece suit and tie, and of course, the iconic white gloves, formal wear is usually only donned during events. Casual wear, such as a polo shirt and slacks, is common for everyday butling.
During formal events, a butler’s attire should be of slightly different coloring than what a guest could be expected to wear to prevent embarrassment should guests be unable to distinguish staff from peers.
The uniform most commonly associated with butling is the traditional dress of English butlers. This consists of a white wing collar shirt, a tie or bow tie, a gray vest, gray striped pants, a black morning coat and a pair of white gloves.
Shiny shoes are a must for a well-trained butler.
Responsibilities of a butler in a private home often include: managing household staff; greeting guests; setting tables and serving meals; wine pairing; laundry and wardrobe management; bill management; booking reservations; child care; cleaning duties; silver polishing; flower arranging; pet care and more. Some butlers do double duty, standing in as bodyguards or chauffeurs. Butlers are often expected to travel ahead of their principal to prepare accommodations. They may also need to change location frequently and must be prepared for anything, such as weeks on board a yacht or traveling to a remote destination at the whim of their principal.
