HOW TO

CHOOSE YOUR CATSKILL VACATION HOME The

Shul

The

With various projects currently under construction in the Catskills, how does a family choose the right home - in the right development - and not experience buyer’s remorse in the future? For the chassideshe family living in the metro NY area, MOUNTAIN ACRES is the only sensible choice – for many good and compelling reasons. Please consider the following in its totality:

T H E P R OJ E CT The facilities and amenities of MOUNTAIN ACRES are in a class of their own. There will be a grand shul (under construction) with a mikveh and day camp facilities, two large outdoor pools with kiddie pools, a magnificent all-year indoor pool with a health gym and spa, all built on an intelligently designed site plan with most trees saved - and commensurate with our previous unique and beautiful projects in the Catskills, including; Alpine Acres, Lake Forest Estates, Twin Oaks Village, Laurel Ledge Villas, Evergreen Estates, Regency Estates, Luxor Estates, Vacation Village, Elm Shade Estates, Willow Woods, Woodlake Village, and Woodridge Estates.

MOUNTAIN ACRES is located in scenic and quiet Mountaindale (part of the Town of Fallsburg), and shares the same altitude and “air” as Woodridge which is less than a mile away. It is a shorter ride from the City (exit 112), especially in the summer when one can avoid the annoying traffic bottlenecks of Route 42, both in Fallsburg and in Monticello. MOUNTAIN ACRES is adjacent to the yeshiva of Mountaindale (year-round minyan) and to a beautiful walking trail which leads directly to the Center 1 kosher shopping mall in Woodridge. MOUNTAIN ACRES is one of very few projects offering homes which are stick-built - not cookie-cutter modulars or double wide-trailers. And it is the ONLY project where over 90% of its homes will be fully detached! MOUNTAIN ACRES offers its clientele – if they want to - the ability to customize any of nine different models being offered so they will not have to settle for any imposed builder's standards. The homes range from 3-8 bedrooms, 2-6 bathrooms, 1-3 stories, with many customizable floorplans designed to suit any family’s needs or budgets.

Houses

in

progress

One does not need to be rich to buy a home at MOUNTAIN ACRES. Our semi-attached duplex home, 1348 sq. ft. with 3 bedrooms, 9' ceiling, and 2 ½ baths sells for $179,900. But for just $205,900 you can have that same home built on an unfinished basement, with room for future expansion to 5 bedrooms with 3 ½ baths! Our eight other models are all fully detached and begin at $279,900. Financing available. (Taxes will be similar to comparably sized homes in other projects in Fallsburg with municipal water and sewer; maintenance projected at approximately $3500 per house.) Does buying a lesser home in a lesser project really make sense? When comparing apples to apples, we have the only tree!

MOUNTAIN ACRES is currently under construction and is scheduled to open for this coming season I”YH. Compare carefully and you too will soon be calling us to join our expanding heimische olam who certainly won’t be experiencing any buyer’s remorse after they move in! It's not too late for this year if you act now. Call Nachman at 845-434-2600 (nachmank@gmail.com) or Ephraim (w89stern@gmail.com). Offering by prospectus only.

A FEAST FOR THE EYES

‫הדלקתי נרותי והחלפתי שמלותי‬

(Re: Nature’s Bounty, Issue 182) I opened The Monsey View on Wednesday, and your Tu B’Shvat display was a feast for my eyes. The chocolate medallions looked so simple to make that as I was packing up the esrog compote that my mother-inlaw relies on yearly, I decided, on a whim, to whip these up. They were easy to make and looked beautiful. Thank you for the inspiration. S.F.

RE: FEELING LEFT OUT (Inbox, Issue 181) I am writing in response to your letter regarding the Yiddishlanguage comics. As a Yiddishe mother, why not take the opportunity The Monsey View is giving you to teach your children the language of the Gra, the Chofetz Chaim, and all the gedolim of yesteryear, given that comics help in comprehension? And when we are zoche to the ultimate redemption soon, b’zechus shem, lashon and malbush, your children will be able to greet our rabbonim in their language. Your Sister

RE: OF RAISES AND RESPECT (Inbox, Issues 180–182) Your magazine is great. We wait for it each week and started doing a compilation of them! I would like to add to the discussion of cleaning help that it is not right to hike up the price just because you feel your help deserves it — you can give her a bonus at the end of the month instead of paying her more per hour. Not everyone can afford to pay those prices that you seem to be able to afford. R.L.E.

First of all, thank you for the amazing publication. I wanted to write in after seeing the discussion in previous issues about the rising cost of cleaning help and how we can avoid it. I think it is important to also bring up the topic of holding on to cleaning help before Pesach. We’re a young family and don’t take cleaning help more than once a week (though there have been times when I’ve taken more help). Every year before Pesach I run into the same problem: My cleaning lady just stops coming to me because her more regular client has demanded more hours, and I am completely left in a lurch. On the one hand, it’s wrong of the cleaning lady to just drop me like that, but on the other hand, we are Yidden and should not be doing this to each other. It’s not mentchlich. We don’t have family in Monsey, and all of my children are very small, so this is especially difficult for someone in my position. I feel that it is important that we open up this conversation. Thank you, A Housewife

Let’s face the problem together so we can all deal with it. The demand is bigger than the supply. This means that there will always be someone left without cleaning help. Our cleaning ladies know this. They see the desperation in people. Agreeing to higher salaries will not solve this problem. So let’s keep the prices down, but there is more you can do. When your cleaning lady cancels on you one week, don’t give her the feeling that she is the only cleaning lady out there; imply that you can always find someone else. Lastly, when a new cleaning lady arrives, don’t fill up all of her hours at once. This will give her the feeling that jobs come very easily. I’d like to end off that cleaning ladies are hardworking humans, and they should always be treated with respect. I’d like to thank the original letter writer for bringing up such an important issue in our community. C.R.

To the lady who is tight on cash, I feel for you. Yes, I am also struggling with the high costs of living. However, when I see my help working so hard, helping me survive, I can’t help offering her what she really deserves so she will come back again to help. Remember, minimum wage in Rockland County is now more than 12 dollars an hour. I would rather teach for two hours (and yes, I am a teacher) than do my cleaning lady’s work. May Hashem help us all,

and may we have all we need. Just do me a favor and don’t go out b’achdus to lower my salary. A Teacher

A PLEA TO TELEADVERTISERS (Re: Make It Stop!, Issue 177) I’m writing this with full knowledge that there are two sides to every debate. I hear that our own community’s robocalls may be informative, get more people to come to functions of local mosdos, increase tzedakah, etc. However, the number of calls coming in to my home phone each day despite being on the Do Not Call registry would sound exaggerated if I were to write the number. For those of you who are responsible for sending out these heimishe robocalls, please consider the following: 1. Please limit the frequency of the phone calls. It is extremely frustrating and unnecessary to get five to six calls with the exact same message daily for several days in a row. Perhaps the only exception to this should be the message to go out and vote. 2. Please limit these calls to hours that are acceptable to all members of our community. 11:05 p.m. is way too late to get a robocall, as I have recently received. 3. Please give an option of a number to press so that the recipient of the call can opt out of future calls. A very elderly relative of mine has jumped up numerous times when the phone rang with yet another message that she doesn’t understand, putting her at tremendous risk of falls. Yet when we call the number that called her, we cannot reach anyone to let them know what a sakanah each call creates. Thank you, A Phone-Weary Monsey Resident

Parshas Yisro By: Malka Schneps

“SHIFRA, is your playgroup full for this year, or do you have room for one more child?” asked Shifra’s husband, Mendy, hopefully. Shifra tensed up at his question, worried that he was going to ask her to take in more children. “Well, with the baby still so young and needy, I was thinking to cut back a little this year.” “I agree, you really should cut back,” replied Mendy. “But what if I asked you to consider just one more child this year?” “Just one?” Shifra paused to think it over. “I don’t know, I would have to think about it. Who is it?” “I just ran into Nachman in shul. His daughter is the right age, and he said he’s starting to look for a playgroup for her. I was wondering whether you’d have a slot for her.” “Nachman, the ger tzedek?” asked Shifra. “How time flies! It feels like just yesterday that his daughter was born.” “Yes, that Nachman. What do you think? Could you squeeze in one more?” “It would really be a stretch for me to take in one more, but if it’s very important to you, I can do it,” offered Shifra. “It is very important to me, but let me explain why it should be important to you as well. Maybe once you understand, you will be not only willing, but also happy to add another slot this year. “In this week’s parsha, Yisro heard everything Hashem did when He took us out of Mitzrayim,

and he came to convert. The Rebbe R’ Elimelech of Lizhensk explains that Yisro’s contact with the kedusha of Moshe enabled him to be inspired by what he heard to come join the Bnei Yisroel. The Noam Elimelech cites the Gemara in Pesachim that the reason the Bnei Yisroel went into galus was so that the geirim could join us. The Noam Elimelech asks if it is really justified for the Bnei Yisroel to suffer in galus just so that geirim from among the nations could join us. It would seem better for the geirim to travel to Eretz Yisroel on their own and join us there, right?” “Yes, that would seem to make sense to me,” answered Shifra. “How does the Noam Elimelech resolve this?” Mendy continued, “Well, the Noam Elimelech answers that all geirim have within them a hidden spark of kedusha, and it is this spark that drives them to convert in the first place. But the spark is not strong enough to drive them all the way to Eretz Yisroel on their own. When they come in contact with the Bnei Yisroel behaving correctly, that’s when their spark ignites. This is why we have to travel to them.” “And when their spark ignites, they join Klal Yisroel,” concluded Shifra. “Exactly,” agreed Mendy. “The Noam Elimelech explains that this is why we must be in galus. We must travel from place to place to ignite those sparks and gather those geirim. And that’s why we

have to always behave the right way — we have to not only go to the places where these geirim are located, but we must also ignite their sparks with our behavior.” “That’s very interesting,” said Shifra, “but what does this have to do with Nachman’s daughter?” “Well, I was thinking that if the Noam Elimelech says the reason we’re here in the first place is to gather geirim, and if the Torah commands us thirty-six times to love the ger, I want to do my part in welcoming Nachman and his family, and doing everything I can to help them when I have the opportunity.” “I agree.” Shifra smiled. “And I want to do my part as well. You can go ahead and tell Nachman that I would be happy to have his daughter in my playgroup. And, if it’s okay with you, maybe you can invite his family to join us for a Shabbos meal as well?” “I knew you would understand where I was coming from in asking you to accept another child,” said Mendy. “And I will be happy to invite Nachman’s family to join us for Shabbos.” “Great!” said Shifra. Mendy clapped his hands together in excitement. “May Hashem grant us the opportunity to ignite some more sparks, and maybe once all those sparks are ignited, the rest of the geirim will join us, and we will finally be able to end the galus once and for all.” “Amen,” exclaimed Shifra. “And may it be soon!”

Historic Government Shutdown Hits Home The longest-running partial shutdown of the government in the history of the United States that has affected hundreds of thousands of federal workers all across the county is also being felt locally, with several essential programs finding themselves on shaky footing. President Donald Trump announced the shutdown on December 22 after Congress refused to fund a border wall to provide security at the United States–Mexico border. The shutdown has affected various government departments in different ways: The United States Postal Service is operating as usual, and airports and train stations are functioning — thanks to more than 50,000 “essential staffers” who are still manning their posts despite not being paid. The effects of the shutdown are already being felt locally. The Rockland County Department of Social Services is issuing February benefits ahead of

schedule for the 15,000 county residents who participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Full benefits for the entire February will be given out at that time, instead of the usual twice-a-month distribution. Also of concern is the federal school lunch program, which offers free or reduced-cost lunches to students in both public and private schools. According to The Journal News, 66,000 children in Rockland County are enrolled in the program, which is run by the United States Department of Agriculture, and it is one of nine federal agencies that will remain shut down until Trump and Congress come to an agreement. Currently, SNAP; the school lunch program; and WIC, which provides benefits for nutrition for women, infants and children, have only been funded by the USDA through the end

of February. It is unclear if additional monies will be made available for them after that time or if emergency plans will have to be implemented in order for them to continue their operations. For questions on SNAP benefits, contact the Rockland County Department of Social Services at 845-364-3032.

Another Segment of the Tappan Zee Bridge Comes Down with a Boom Despite freezing temperatures, hundreds of people gathered on both sides of the Hudson River on January 15 to watch the eastern anchor span of the original Tappan Zee Bridge come to an explosive end. After a three-day weather-induced delay, demolition crews from the same team that took down New York City’s Kosciuszko Bridge used dynamite to remove the massive metal structure, reported The Journal News. A 2,500-foot safety radius established by the Coast Guard was put in place to prevent any vessels from coming near the bridge while the demolition was actively happening.

68 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 23, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

The span came down at 10:52 a.m. amid massive clouds of black smoke and a loud boom that was heard as far as 35 miles away. Steel chains laid on the riverbed caught the tons of steel that came crashing down, preventing them from sinking into the water. Over the next several months, marine salvage experts will be loading the wreckage onto barges for its eventual removal. The Tappan Zee’s Rockland County anchor span, the last segment of the bridge, will remain in place a little longer. No date has been set yet for its demolition, but it is expected to be dismantled in sections by waterborne

cranes sometime this year. Work has been continuing on the Tappan Zee’s replacement, the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, but there is still no word from Albany on the new span’s expected toll hike. The current toll of $5 ($4.75 with E-Z Pass) is frozen in place until at least 2020, but transportation analysts say that the new toll could be as high as $11. Governor Andrew Cuomo declined to give further details when asked about a new toll last week, saying only, “We’re going to have a commission that is going to look at the tolls, and I don’t believe the toll on this bridge, per se, is going to be a challenge.”

Is Being Mr "Nice Guy" Making You Unhealthy We all want to be the nice guy. We all want people to like us. It’s part of our human make up. Could trying to be a nice person be harmful? Could it be holding you back from living a healthy lifestyle? A big problem that a lot of people have is saying “no” to people. This may be because it feels good to help others or it may just be that you are hoping for a favor in return. Perhaps you are just uncomfortable saying “no”…

can’t help people from a hospital bed. If by saying yes to people to gain popularity and because of this you lose time with your family, time to take care of your health and on top of that you get stressed out because of the obligation then is yes really the right thing to say? Furthermore, let’s take a moment to speak about the business guys. Most people act like if they don't respond to this urgent email or take this phone call or respond to the text that it’s game over.

Whatever the reason, we must recognize that by saying yes to one thing we are saying no to something else.

This automatic response of urgency is a definite way to add more stress in your day and feel like a prisoner to your life.

You only have so much time in your day. When you agree to do something, may that agreement be with yourself or for a friend, you are automatically occupying that time with something which makes you unable to do anything else.

I guarantee if you push off responding to most situations nothing is going to happen. Even if you wait — do I dare say — a couple of hours, your life will still be here.

Now, saying yes to things that enable you do the things you want to do — for things that help you progress in your life, is awesome. You want to do these things. But what happens in cases where you are doing things that don't help you move forward in life? Not only do they not progress you forward but they take you away from doing what you want to be doing. They take you away from doing the things you need to do for your health and for your life… Now that is what I like to call “self sabotage”. Starting to say no to people, may that be in social settings or in business, can be very hard for people. But you must remember, in order for you to be able to help others and keep on helping others for the rest of your life, you got to take care of you. You are no use to anyone when you can’t move, think clearly or even worse — you

(A side note: If you are in managerial position and you jump every time one of your employees sneezes you are creating a situation where your people are going to become reliant on you. The more you grow the more headache you have. Is that the most efficient way to grow?) Don’t get me wrong I am not telling you that you should all of a sudden be Mr Mean Guy. Not at all. Sometimes we get left doing things because we feel like we have to, robbing us away from doing the things that will progress us and help us live in harmony with our mission in life. Sadly, we aren't even aware that we are doing this. The reason for this is because we aren't even aware about where we want to go in life. For this reason we find ourselves coasting through life doing whatever the day throws our way. All the while, we slowly become less healthy, less able to do the things we once were able to do. Blaming our situation on circumstance. “These are the cards life has dealt me.”

I want to make you aware that you are able to get out of this hamster wheel. You can take control over your day. You can gain control over your health even if you feel like there is no time. We mentioned last week about starting with the end in mind. Know what you would like to accomplish within your life time, create goals and carve out the time. Saying yes or no is another time where it is extremely important for you to know what the end looks like for you. What are you striving to be? What do you want to tell Hashem after 120? Remember, the goal here isn't to become mean. The goal is to be able to lessen your load so you aren’t leading such a stressful obligatory life. This is for you to have time to take care of your health. Once you have some idea of what you want all you got to do is ask yourself a question. Will saying yes to this thing help me get closer or further from my goal? Will saying yes cause strain on myself and/or my family essentially prolonging where I need to be? If it gets you closer then it is a big fat “YES!” and you can go and do the what’s needed with joy. Best part? You won’t feel like you are doing it because you are forced to do it. But if it doesn't get you closer and even furthers you away from your goals then it would be wise to decline in a nice way. You could be straight up honest. You can just turn around to the person and thank them for thinking about you but unfortunately doing this will take you away from important obligations you have set and therefore you can not do it. Most adults would understand and you can still be the “nice person” in their eyes instead of the push over. Taking the time out to ask yourself the questions that empower you and allow you room to think for yourself allows for take back little parts of your day so you can start to take care of you and your health.

Dusk turns to night. The Shabbos Queen prepares to depart. The day of rest, of holiness, of the neshamah yeseirah is about to end. How we yearn to hold on to the peaceful tranquility that Shabbos brings! While there is no way to put a stop on the clock, there is opportunity for us to keep Shabbos with us for just a little bit longer. Tzaddikim teach us that tosfos Shabbos, adding time to Shabbos, is not merely a halachic obligation; it also showers spiritual and material blessings upon us. The Maharam of Lechovitz, zt”l, said that the day of Shabbos is so great, it provides a wellspring of ruchniyus for the entire week — and the wellspring of gashmiyus comes from the time a person adds on to Shabbos Kodesh. “If ba’alei batim would listen to me,” he concluded, “they would make a large tosfos Shabbos and have a shefa of parnassah all week long!” The echoes of “Baruch hamavdil bein kodesh l’chol” mark the conclusion of Shabbos and the commencement of a new work week. All melachah is forbidden prior to this demarcation. The words of Maariv and Havdalah give the separation true finality. Striking a chord in familiar melody, the ageold words of “G-t fun Avraham” were composed by none other than Reb Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev, zy”a. “It is a great segulah for hatzlacha,” Reb Levi Yitzchak writes, “for men, women and children to entreat this request every Motzei Shabbos before Havdalah three times. And I am certain they will surely be successful…” The words were specifically written in Yiddish, rather than in Lashon Kodesh, to link the speech of Shabbos, which is holy, and the speech of weekday, which is chol, rather than plummeting from such a high to a low so drastically.

Motzei Shabbos Minhagim To keep a vestige of the kedushah of Shabbos with us throughout the upcoming work week, various minhagim and halachos are honored on Motzei Shabbos. Just as Shabbos is welcomed with licht, flames are kindled upon her leave. It is preferable to light two candles before making Havdalah, and to keep them lit until after melaveh malkah. Many keep the white tablecloths, pristinely spread throughout Shabbos, on the tables until after Havdalah or until the following morning. Chazal say that “chamin” on Motzei Shabbos brings refuah. Tzaddikim also indicate that it alleviates sadness and despair. Most of the world fulfills chamin with hot drinks. Some serve hot bread or food. New foods that were not permitted to be prepared on Shabbos but were warmed up fresh afterward also bring honor to Motzei Shabbos. Drawing well-water on Motzei Shabbos and drinking from it is beneficial for healing. The Be’er of Miriam, which rests in the waters of Teveria, makes its rounds to all wellsprings every Motzei Shabbos and confers special blessing upon their waters. Drinking well-water at this time is also said to open hearts and minds to the wisdom of Torah. To begin the new week with a mitzvah, one should fold his tallis right away. It is known to be a segulah for shalom bayis.

Piyutim and Zemiros Much as a king is escorted amid great fanfare and song, we sing as we escort the Shabbos Queen. These are commonly part of the repertoire.

Hamavdil

Women typically refrain from performing major melachah, such as sewing, until after Chatzos. It isn’t proper to cut nails on Motzei Shabbos as it may appear as a lack of honor for Shabbos.

Dressed in the Finest The Maharam of Lechovitz, zt”l, once switched out of his Shabbos clothes before going out on a Motzei Shabbos. When he returned, he donned his Shabbos clothes once again, despite the late hour. “Even a little bit of Shabbos, what a sweetness it is!” he said with passion. Reb Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson of Lubavitch, zt”l, shared that he once wanted to change into his weekday clothes on Motzei Shabbos, but his father, Reb Shalom Dov Ber, zt”l, stopped him. “You are a descendant of Chernobyl, and in Chernobyl, they did not switch out of bigdei Shabbos on Motzei Shabbos.” In fact, not only in Chernobyl is this minhag upheld. It is brought down in the name of the Chasam Sofer, the Ben Ish Chai and others, that Shabbos clothes should still be worn until after one partakes in melaveh malkah, or as others maintain, at least until after Havdalah. The Baal Terumas Hadeshen held that bigdei Shabbos should not be removed until one goes to sleep. The previous Rebbe of Skvere, zt”l, used to lay his Shabbos clothes on the table on Motzei

A Yid must always distinguish between kodesh and chol, between pure and impure, between “Yisroel la’amim.” Though these opposing forces may be necessary to uphold this world, the separation must still be recognized. Hamavdil accentuates the honor of Shabbos, the day of rest, and draws the kedushah of Shabbos upon all six workdays for the one who recites it.

Vayiten Lecha These are pesukim of much bracha and hatzlacha that are said as a segulah, for the upcoming week. They also herald parnassah. Reb Yechezkel of Shinev, zt”l, even commented, “I don’t understand how a Yid could yield parnassah every week if he did not say Vayiten Lecha on Motzei Shabbos.” Some are careful it should be said by two people together. This is because by saying “lecha” (for you), one is actually conferring blessing upon his friend — and one who davens on behalf of his friend is answered first. Reb Yechezkel of Shinev used to say it along with a kohen to receive the bracha of a kohen.

Ish Chassid This piyut tells the story of a man who met Eliyahu Hanavi while in search of parnassah. It is mesugal for wealth and kedushah, and for banei, chayei and mezonei, which are referenced throughout the piyut in various sets of acronyms.

Eliyahu Hanavi In yearning for Eliyahu Hanavi to foretell the Geulah, we mention his name. It is

Shabbos rather than return them to their place. In case Moshiach would come in the middle of the night, he wanted to be able to don his Shabbos clothes right away, because Motzei Shabbos is a time when one should still be wearing his Shabbos attire. Being dressed in Shabbos finery makes performing Kiddush Levanah on Motzei Shabbos a priority over weeknights. Tzaddikim posit that the time until when a person wears his Shabbos clothes in this world will be considered the point of his personal extension of Shabbos when he is in the Olam Haemes.

Tales of Tzaddikim The story is told of a distinguished chassid who traveled to the Sar Shalom of Belz, zt”l. After shalosh seudos, he commented to one of the gabbaim, named Meilech, that speaking about the Baal Shem Tov on Motzei Shabbos is mesugal for parnassah, and speaking about Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk is mesugal for yiras Shamayim, and so on. The gabbai began to laugh. The Sar Shalom turned to the gabbai and said, “Meilech! Vus lachstu azoi grub?” The gabbai repeated what the chassid had told him. To his surprise, the Rebbe responded, “When we speak about tzaddikim, we give them nachas ruach in the Olam Haemes. They don’t want to derive pleasure without repaying us, and so they return the parnassah, yiras Shamayim and other yeshuos to the speaker. And,” concluded the Rebbe, “When they will speak about me, it will also be a favor [to the speaker].” “The world says that speaking about the Baal Shem Tov generates parnassah and mentioning Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk yields yiras Shamayim,” Reb Yisroel of Ruzhin,

zt”l, said. “But I say that it is not specifically only about these tzaddikim, and not specifically only on Motzei Shabbos… Regarding all tzaddikim, whenever we speak about them, it is a segulah for all blessings.” The Kamarna Rebbe stated that at a seudas mitzvah, such as melaveh malkah, we risk speaking negatively about others. So in order to keep the table of the King pure, it is preferable to repeat the praise of tzaddikim instead!

Havdalah Without marking a distinction, Shabbos and weekday would blend in a blur. By lifting the kos of wine over the blessings of Havdalah, we acknowledge the great divide. Hakadosh Baruch Hu calls the Yid who makes Havdalah, “kadosh,” and considers him “segulah,” as it says, “v’hayisem li segulah mikol ha’amim — and you should be for Me chosen, special from among the nations.” Indeed, in Havdalah we delineate, “bein Yisroel la’amim,” which is our

personal affirmation of the the greatness of being a Yid, standing separate from among the nations. WINE The becher is filled to the top, and then the wine continues to be poured to the point of overflowing. This is a siman bracha and also has sources in Kabbalah. Some make sure to use some wine left over from Kiddush on Shabbos, which is said to be a zechus for Olam Haba. BESAMIM A whiff of besamim assuages the aching sadness left behind as Shabbos departs. In addition, since the fire of Gehinnom does not burn on Shabbos and when it is rekindled after Shabbos the smell is strong, we sniff besamim to shield ourselves from that smell. Smelling besamim is also a shemirah that ones’ children not go astray. Many also smell leaves of the hadassim used in the mitzvah of lulav on Sukkos. CANDLE Light was created on Motzei Shabbos, as the first day of Creation began. In remembrance, we light the Havdalah candle. This mitzvah in its most select form is done with a candle with multiple wicks, whose flame is bright, and according to the Arizal, should be made of wax. It is always sweet to see little kids waving their hands in front of the candle, and indeed, the interesting custom of inspecting one’s hands to the light of the flame can be explained in numerous ways. Among a host of deeper and mystical reasons, simply put, it generates bracha. The Maharam of Rottenberg expounds that closing and stretching out the hand shows that melacha, which was forbidden until this point, is now permitted.

In Closing After the brachos are completed, the flame is extinguished by pouring wine over it. This proves that the candle had been lit specifically for this purpose. Some smell the doused candle to show affection for this mitzvah. It also helps for forgetfulness and for having only pure, good thoughts throughout the coming week. It is also common to rekindle the candle and extinguish it once again as a segulah against fires. Dabbing wine on the eyes demonstrates a love for the mitzvah and brings refuah to the eyes. Many also place some wine on their foreheads and pockets. The moments of Havdalah are so significant that they illuminate a special glow on the faces of tzaddikim. Reb Itzik’l of Skvere, zt”l, used to make Havdalah in his private room, and the person holding the candle would stand behind him, because he could not look the Rebbe in his face!

brought down that Eliyahu Hanavi will not come on Erev Shabbos, so once Shabbos has passed and he can come once again, we daven for it. Also, every Motzei Shabbos, Eliyahu Hanavi enters Gan Eden and sits under the Eitz Chayim where he writes the zechusim of those who keep Shabbos. Shabbos is compared to Olam Haba, and weekday to Olam Hazeh. Eliyahu Hanavi is a perfect medium as he entered Gan Eden while still alive. We sing his name three times — Eliyahu Hanavi, Eliyahu Hatishbi, Eliyahu Hagiladi — in reference to the chut hameshulash, the three Avos. We keep calling him, time and again, so he should not delay. Some have the minhag to mention his name 130 times! Remembering Eliyahu Hanavi is beneficial against forgetfulness, saves one from Gehinnom, and blesses one’s ways with success all week long.

Vayishlach The pesukim of this portion of Parshas Vayishlach (until chamishi) hint at our galus. Saying it is therefore accepted as a protection from danger and enemies. Some people say it weekly, but it is mostly said by those who are set to travel during the upcoming week.

Way back when, when my mother was a little girl, every Motzei Shabbos — winter or summer, rain or shine — their family packed into the car and drove across town to visit both sets of grandparents. There was no entertainment for them, save for enjoying the treats put out in their honor, and the only activity on the schedule was serious conversation. But these get-togethers were enjoyed by all, and my mother and her siblings have the most pleasant memories of these often-late night excursions. Fast forward to some years later, when my siblings and I were growing up. Unfortunately, due to the travel distance, visiting grandparents every week was not a feasible option. Not only did this leave us without that wonderful experience, it also left us quite bored on Motzei Shabbos. During the summer this did not cause much of an issue, but all through the winter, every Motzei Shabbos would find us complaining that we had nothing to do. Hearing us kvetch, my mother would wax nostalgic about the Motzei Shabbasos of her youth, reminiscing about those cozy visits to her beloved grandparents, all the while trying to come up with something that we would be excited to do. Some weeks we’d end up doing something interesting, and other weeks less so — but Motzei Shabbos was definitely a cozy family time that I now reminisce about. On these winter weeks, when Shabbos ends so early, there is a long, quiet night to fill with beautiful family time. No one is in a rush to go out into the freezing cold, and everyone is calm and rested from Shabbos. These are the perfect nights to stay home and spend quality time together. There are many fun and wholesome activities that can be done at home as a family — even though pleasing children of various ages may not always be simple — and they are easier to pull off than you may think.

A great way to ensure that the kids are on board with the ideas you have is to sit down with them and make a list together. Come armed with a few options of your own and ask them for suggestions as well. Try to include at least one thing that each child will appreciate, so even if they are not enamored with the activity one week, they’ll know that an upcoming week will have something different planned. Alternatively, you can surprise them each week with the plan for that night. If done well, this can make the simplest of ideas seem very exciting and will prevent any advance complaining over the choice of entertainment.

Having the kids prepare, practice and then put on a play is something that is enjoyed by children of all ages. Make sure you have plenty of items for costumes and props, and let them run with it. You will love seeing their creativity and may even discover some hidden talents! Dim the lights, serve some popcorn and turn it into a real show. Double the excitement by recording the event and sharing it with relatives.

For families that enjoy the kitchen, cooking an elaborate melaveh malkah together can be a big hit. Let the kids plan the menu before Shabbos, and include the items you’ll need for the recipes in your Shabbos shopping. A nicely set table and room decor will enhance the meal and make it an exciting event. Inviting grandparents, other family members or even some good friends to enjoy the fruits of your labor will take the meal from fun to thrilling.

A cooking or baking competition is another kitchen idea that goes over very well with kids (and adults!) of all ages. Plan a few secret ingredients in advance and have everyone make the best dish they can, using those ingredient in a short amount of time. Having official rules and judges takes the excitement up yet another notch. Again, if you record the event to share with relatives or even for yourselves, the kids will be delighted and incredibly proud. This activity has the added bonus of doubling as melaveh malkah, as well.

For more artistic families, you can set up a paint night. Either purchase canvases or ceramic pieces, along with the necessary paints, brushes and other supplies. Ceramics and relevant tools can be obtained from a ceramics painting shop. If you will be painting canvases, find an easy picture to copy, and hang it up where everyone can see it while they work. Before starting to paint, spread out garbage bags or plastic tablecloths and have everyone change into old clothing that can get stained.

No one is in a rush to go out into the freezing cold, and everyone is calm and rested from Shabbos, making it the perfect night to stay home and spend quality time together. A new game, or even an oldie but goodie, or a big puzzle to be assembled by the entire family can be another great activity. Involving the entire family adds life to any game. If your children span many different ages, try to choose a game or puzzle that the majority of the children will enjoy. Most games can be played in teams, so the younger kids can be matched with older siblings, and everyone can join in.

Even the most mundane ideas can be elevated by simply turning up the music and serving special refreshments on the side. When the whole family is involved, from parents and teens down to the toddlers, whatever you decide to do will be transformed into an exciting event. Don’t let these weeks pass you by! Take advantage of this perfect opportunity to bring your family closer together with wholesome fun. Motzei Shabbos will become a night your kids will look forward to — and reminisce about down the road.

It was Motzei Shabbos, and the holy Apter Rav, zt”l, was learning in his private room off the beis midrash. Outside the room, chassidim were singing and dancing spiritedly, partaking in melaveh malkah together. Intrigued by the sounds, the Apter Rav stood up from his place and walked over to gaze at the spectacle. Discomfited, the chassidim immediately dispersed, thinking that their singing must have disturbed the Rebbe from his learning. When the Apter Rav turned back to his room, he found an elderly Yid waiting for him. The Yid introduced himself as Dovid Hamelech and asked, “Why did you disturb the singing? They were singing and dancing in honor of my seudah. Do you know what a nachas ruach that creates in Shamayim?” The Rebbe immediately sent out his gabbai to call the Yidden back to shul to resume their dancing, and the Rebbe joined them. After a while, the Rebbe shared just how inspiring and meaningful their song and dance actually were.

A Banquet with the King It was no secret that Dovid Hamelech was to pass away on a Shabbos; he himself knew! So, when Motzei Shabbos

106 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 23, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

rolled around, he felt so fortunate to be alive that he rejoiced with a special seudah that took on his name — Seudas Dovid Malka Meshicha. The four seudos of Shabbos rouse the four pedestals of the Heavenly throne — Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov and Dovid. Thus, melaveh malkah, the fourth meal, correlates with Dovid Hamelech. Dovid Hamelech derives special pleasure in Shamayim from all who feast in his honor. The Baal Shem Tov stated that whoever lights candles and washes for this seudah is certainly honored with Dovid Hamelech’s presence. And, whenever he or one of his children is in need of a yeshuah or refuah, he should festively partake in melaveh malkah

— or pledge to do so at the earliest opportunity — and ask that Hashem grant him his salvation in the merit of Dovid Hamelech. The Minchas Shabbos tells the story of a Yid who was lost one Motzei Shabbos in an area heavily frequented by robbers. Sure enough, he was soon caught and faced certain death. When asked for his final request, the Yid said that since he was accustomed to eating melaveh malkah every Motzei Shabbos, he wanted a chance to have this seudah prior to his execution. The bandits agreed. While he was eating his last solitary meal, he was visited by none other than Dovid Hamelech, dressed in the guise of an officer, who came to save him.

Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk, zy”a, used to drink a hot glass of tea with sugar every Motzei Shabbos, and every week, Dovid Hamelech would appear before him, adorned with a beautiful golden crown on his head. One week, there was no sugar for his tea, so Reb Elimelech drank his tea without it. That week, when Dovid Hamelech appeared, his head was bare. “Where is your crown?” Reb Elimelech asked. Dovid responded, “Where was your sugar?” When Reb Itzik’l of Pshevorsk, zt”l, heard this story, he began to drink his tea with sugar every Motzei Shabbos. At melaveh malkah, we sing more zemiros than at any other seudah of Shabbos in tribute to Dovid, the ne’im zemiros Yisroel.

Have you ever wondered? Must I wash for melaveh malkah? L’chatchilah, one should wash. The Chazon Ish stated that one should make sure to wash on Hamotzi, lest he regret it in the Olam Haemes. Reb Chaim of Volozhin, zt”l, a talmid of the Vilna Gaon, once came to his Rebbe on a Motzei Shabbos, and the Vilna Gaon asked if he had eaten melaveh malkah. Reb Chaim responded that he was not feeling well and had eaten some honey cake. The Gaon laughed and instructed him to wash for the seudah right then and there. Should women also eat melaveh malkah? The reasons for this seudah — escorting the Shabbos Queen and nourishing the luz bone, which is only fed on Motzei Shabbos — apply to women as well. Thus, the Kaf Hachaim maintains that women should partake in melaveh malkah. Others are more lenient. The Vilna Gaon once realized that his wife had not eaten melaveh malkah because she had taken upon herself to fast. The Gaon told her that all of her fasting would never make up for the loss incurred by one missed melaveh malkah, and the rebbetzin immediately washed for the meal. In addition, it is brought down in the name of Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk, zy”a, that eating melaveh malkah every week and expressing that it is specifically “l’sheim mitzvas melaveh malkah” is a segulah for easy childbirth.

Is there anything wrong with being dressed in weekday clothes? At melaveh malkah, in a literal sense, we are escorting the Shabbos Queen. It is fit to do so in chashuve clothes. Also, the neshamah yeseirah does not leave until after this special meal. Thus, tzaddikim and gedolim of all stripes, throughout the generations, were careful to remain in their Shabbos best. Can melaveh malkah be considered bitul Torah? The Rebbe of Skulen, zt”l, once explained to someone with this question that this is certainly not the case. Chazal say that “chamin” on Motzei Shabbos brings refuah. Aside from the simple explanation, the Rebbe said, these words hold inner meaning: The “warmth” of Shabbos must be continued on Motzei Shabbos with song and divrei Torah, and in this way, we can keep the spiritual energy warm for the entire week. This strengthening of yiras Shamayim and Torah learning is thus the exact opposite of bitul Torah. There are so many gala melaveh malkah celebrations and fundraisers these days. Is it specifically a special time for gatherings? As brought down from the Sar Shalom of Belz, zt”l, and Reb Aharon of Belz, zt”l, eating melaveh malkah with a crowd is mesugal for achdus, and it is a favor and protection for the entire city!

A Table Laden with Merit Dovid Hamelech said in Tehillim, “S’adeini v’ivashei’ah” (119:117), which is explained in a deeper dimension as a message from Dovid Hamelech. “S’adeini – partake in my seudah, the seudah of melaveh malkah, V’ivashei’ah – and I will be for you a yeshuah!” The eis ratzon during the seudah of melaveh malkah is very great. Tzaddikim share that it is possible to grasp storehouses of yeshuos — be it in parnassah, health, geulah, techiyas hameisim, and even protection from tragic death and heresy — during this time. Reb Yisroel of Rizhin, zy”a, held this to be the most auspicious time for salvation and often told petitioners to join him for melaveh malkah, when he would best be able to be mazkir them. A wealthy talmid chacham by the name of Reb Moshe Kanger once faced a difficult court case and wished to receive the blessing of the holy Shinever Rav. Afraid that leaving town would cause problems before the trial, he sent Reb Itche Pinter of Bikovsk as a shaliach instead. The Shinever Rav told Reb Itche, the shaliach, that if Reb Moshe would accept upon himself whatever the Rav would ask of him, he would surely see a yeshuah. When things indeed turned out well, Reb Moshe set out for Shinev without delay. To his surprise, the Shinever simply asked him to make sure to eat melaveh malkah every Motzei Shabbos!

Prime Time for a Request The residents of a distant land were fed up by the heavy taxes that the ministers of the king levied. Still, when news of the king’s impending visit was announced, everyone was swept up in the excitement. They dressed in their Shabbos best and went out to greet the king amid much pomp and ceremony. Every day that the king was among them, they partied at festive banquets to the background of live music. On the day the king was due to return to his palace, the residents gathered and presented themselves to the king. “Your honor,” they began, “so long as you were in our midst, we did not want to disturb your obvious delight in our joyous friendship! But now, as you prepare to depart, we have no choice but to voice our troubles. You see, we are on the verge of collapse from the financial stress that the high taxes of your kingdom impose on us. Please, we beg, ease the great burden sitting heavily on our shoulders!” The king, satiated with pleasure at his subjects’ pleasant reception, happily acquiesced. So too, Reb Elazar of Lizensk, zt”l, explained in analogy — all week long, we Yidden suffer from the burden of galus and difficulties in parnassah. Yet, as Shabbos approaches, we dress in dignified clothes and honor the King with three festive seudos, full of joyous song and praise, yet with not a word of request. When the time comes for us to separate after our holy day together, at the seudah of melaveh malkah, every wise man has the opportunity to approach the King, to pour out his heart in request, and surely, Hakadosh Baruch Hu will fulfill all of his desires. Let us finally realize the promise of tzaddikim of yesteryear — when all who honor the seudah of Dovid Malka Meshicha will be able to enjoy the seudah of Mashiach ben Dovid, soon in our days.

y two children were finally sleeping after a long Shabbos afternoon, and the quiet was a loud and unnatural presence in my home. Shabbos would soon be over, and those remaining fifteen minutes were all for me. It had been a deeply fulfilling — and exhausting — Shabbos. Entertaining my little ones had been an exercise in stretching my creativity and patience, but now, as I looked at my sleeping beauties, I thanked them for building a better mother and person. But after a day of endless giving, loving and caressing, I longed to refill my own emotional reserves. I was sapped of energy, and there was only so far I could go without nurturing myself. I looked at the clock, panicking. I had only a few minutes before stepping back onto the racing, unending track of giving. The dishes and laundry, toys and orange juice spills were all waiting for me. I opened a magazine. Would a good story or parsha nugget satiate my hunger? I tried, but two minutes later I was restless again. I was too distracted to concentrate, and I craved the kind of inspiration that comes from within. My eyes fell on the Chumash on the table. Connecting to Torah in its pure and unprocessed form seemed promising. I opened the Chumash to the week’s parsha, trying to tap into the Torah's fountain of wisdom, but that burst

of inspiration I sought didn’t come fast enough. I needed a spiritual boost, and I needed it now! There were nine minutes left. I tried a chapter of Tehillim. But my heart remained closed, unmoved, and that sublime feeling of d’veikus I sought began to seem like a dream too good to be true. I sat on the toy-strewn couch, almost resigning to the fate of apathy, when the ache inside me became so great that it just burst out — in song. The words “Tov l’hodos la’Hashem” came to mind, and I sang my favorite tune slowly, savoring each word like the last crumb of chocolate cake in the box. It started out as a low, uncertain murmur, but the song soon swept me up. “Tov l’hodos la’Hashem…” It's good to praise Hashem, and sing to His exalted Name. “L’haggid baboker chasdecha, ve’emunascha baleilos…” I will sing His praises, and strengthen my connection with Him — in the rushed mornings, and when I wake up to my crying infant in middle of the night. I sang with my voice, my heart and my soul. My entire being was suffused with the joy of connection, of spirituality sandwiched between dressing children in pajamas and getting through a stack of dishes. I sang once, twice, three times. I couldn’t get enough. Tears, pure tears, streamed down my cheeks. Soon I peeked out to the dark sky, the yearning inside me growing. There was Someone behind this mask listening to my song. And although Shabbos was long over, I didn’t wipe my tears. I sang and sang, wishing it would last an eternity.

HILCHOS BORER | PART 7

KAVANAH WHEN SELECTING

because his kavanah at the time of selecting was to eat it later.3

We mentioned in previous articles that when faced with a mixture of two different types of foods or items, or a mixture of ochel (food) with pesoles (garbage),1 one can avoid issues of borer by following three conditions: 1) taking what one wants to eat or use from what one doesn’t; 2) taking it only immediately before eating or using; and 3) using one’s hands and not a kli that helps in the separation process.2 Let’s discuss the second condition of immediate use.

Changing one’s mind What about the reverse? Moshe took the peanut from the mixture to eat it right away — but after he took it, he no longer wanted to eat it. According to some poskim, similar to the case above, everything follows the kavanah at the time of the borer. Here, since at the time Moshe did the borer he had in mind to eat it immediately, it does not make it assur retroactively once he changed his mind to eat it later.4 However, other poskim hold that in such a case, depending on why he is not eating it, there can be an issur d’rabbanan.5 These poskim differentiate between similar

Therefore, the Ben Ish Chai (Rav Pe’alim, Orach Chaim vol. 1 siman 12) reads into the words Moshe took it, Reof the Beis Yosef that he is speaking about a case where he didn’t have any kavanah at the time of doing the uven reminded him borer. cases. One case is where during a meal, a person takes ten pieces of food of the flavor he likes from a mixture of different flavors, and after eating five, feels full and does not want to eat the rest. This is muttar because such an action is not considered changing his mind. Really, he would want the other five now, but it’s just that he feels full after eating the first five. The same is true if he wants to eat it, but something unexpected happens that prevents him from eating it.6 For example, if the food a person chooses falls onto the floor and gets dirty, and the person doesn’t want to eat it anymore, then this is not an issur d’rabbanan because he did not change his mind at all. He would be happy to eat it, had it not fallen, but he can’t because it is dirty. A third kind of case has a different psak. In such a case, a person takes ten pieces of food from the mixture with the intention to eat all of them immediately, but after he takes them, he changes his mind and decides to leave over some of them to eat a few hours later.7 According to many poskim this is an issur d’rabbanan because as opposed to the previous cases, here the person actually changed his mind. Leaving over a part of one piece versus leaving over some pieces It must be mentioned that according to all opinions, one must make sure that when he takes the ten pieces of food, he really thinks that he will eat all ten immediately. If he has in mind at the time of selecting that he will only eat five now and then five later, then according to all opinions, it is an issur d’Oraisa because the other five are not fulfilling the condition of immediate use. However, if one takes only one item from a mixture, with the intention to eat a part of it and to leave the rest for later, it is muttar according to everyone. This is because only one act of borer was done, and that act itself was needed for the piece that he wants to eat now.8 But one may not use this heter to select ten pieces while intending to eat a small piece from each and leave the rest for later. The reason is that since one does not usually take ten pieces and take one bite from each, it is clear that his kavanah is for later use and not for the small piece that he wants now.9 The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacha-related questions, consult your rav for a psak.

Before matches were invented, fires were lit by either striking flint and steel or by using a burning glass, which was a lens that directed the sun’s rays onto a flammable surface used to help ignite the fire.

While it took the Western world until the 19th century to catch up, historical evidence shows that the Chinese were way ahead of their time and had been using matches with heads of sulfur ever since the year 577.

As Chinese citizen Tao Gu wrote in his book, Records of the Unworldly and the Strange, in the 10th century, “...An ingenious man devised the system of [saturating] little sticks of pinewood with sulfur and storing them ready for use. At the slightest touch of fire, they burst into flame... This marvelous thing was formerly called a ‘light-bringing slave,’ but afterward when it became an article of commerce its name was changed to ‘fire inch-stick.’”

While some argue that these ancient Chinese matches weren’t capable of striking a fire on their own, all agree that they used methods and chemicals only discovered centuries later in the West, and that they were definitely a practical method of transferring and using fire.

Oddly, cigarette lighters were around even before friction matches were invented. Seems like some scientists had their priorities wrong…

Where does the word “match” come from? It is derived from the word “mèche” in Old French, which referred to the wick of a candle. But before the invention of the match we know today, a match referenced a cord that was soaked in chemicals and worked like a fuse.

Over the years, at least a dozen chemists and scientists worked toward the goal of creating a safe and convenient match. While early findings began when scientists in the late 17th century discovered the flammable nature of phosphorus, most match innovations were first seen in the 19th century.

118 / THE MONSEY VIEW

Many early self-igniting matches worked by combining chemicals — usually by breaking or crushing one component of the match that held within it sulfuric acid. These early chemical matches, however, were clumsy to use and had the tendency to catch fire unexpectedly.

It was by mistake that Englishman John Walker invented the first successful friction match. He’d been working with a combination of chemicals, and the mixture had dried on the end of his stirring stick. When he rubbed the stick against a surface to get rid of the dried chemicals — fire! Due to the erratic nature of chemical matches, these matches that worked with friction showed more promise, and further innovations — both in chemicals used and design — greatly improved the safety of matches.

MATCHSTICK ART Matches (and toothpicks!) are a much-favored medium for artists all over the world. Some artists like using matches with colored heads, some prefer used matches for the dark contrast the burned heads offer their creations — and yet others only purchase matches before the heads are added to the sticks!

Today’s largest matchstick model — and holder of the Guiness world record since 2009 — was built by Englishman David Reynolds, a retired engineer who worked on oil rigs. His model, a replica of an oil production platform located in the North Sea, took a whopping 15 years to build! It consists of over 4 million — yes, million! — matches, and measures 12 feet tall and 21 feet long… “As the saying goes, I think I just got a bit carried away,” Reynolds said. “I didn’t think it would be this big.” And what did his wife think about this project that literally overtook her home? She was pleased her retired husband kept busy, but as she says, “I am sick to death at the sight of a matchstick.” The model is currently on public display at a museum in Southampton, England.

Before Reynolds’ creation came along, the Guiness world record for the biggest matchstick model was held by Mark Colling, who built a 19-foot-long model of the Titanic. His model was comprised of 3.5 million matchsticks, and every detail of this replica — including the lifeboats and deckchairs — was recreated with perfect accuracy.

Another notable matchstick creation is a replica of the U.S. Capitol, which was built with almost a half a million matchsticks. This masterpiece includes an illuminated interior.

This incredible replica of the Tower Bridge was built with 1.6 million matches. It measures 6 feet long and also has real, working lights.
