RoxFM receives new equipment By Vanessa Switala

L

o c al radio station RoxFM recently received new studio equipment and furniture with the Roxby Downs Community Foundation Grant they received last year. The studio upgrade came in two stages. The grant enabled RoxFM to purchase a new mixing desk, two new studio quality CD players, new microphones and headphones as well as a portable digital recorder for off-site interviewing. Station Manager Julian Tregenza said, “RoxFM then decided if we were going to have all of this shiny new equipment we should upgrade the rest of the studio and had a custom-made, studio-specific desk designed and manufactured.” “This also coincided with needing to get the carpet replaced due to water damage during previous storms,” he added.

Presenter of weekly segment The Lowe Down, Jason Lowe, said the new studio looks professional and is user friendly. “It feels more like a specialised space for radio, having a more spacious area is conducive to having guests that can feel comfortable and relaxed, there’s even enough space to have muso’s come in and do a live performance,” he said. “The equipment and furniture means we can concentrate more on presentation and less on the mechanics of the operation.” Mr Tregenza added, “Because of the equipment working the way professional studio equipment should – the ease of use will make training less daunting for beginners, and a much smoother operation for existing presenters; in addition – we are looking at using the old equipment to set up a training studio – and if we get in a position to expand our premises it can be used to outfit a second studio.”

Mr Tregenza said the setup was very labour intensive taking a long period of time. “In the first instance we had to gut the entire studio and front office of RoxFM for recarpeting then reassemble the lot. This process took several volunteers a total of about 35 hours spread over several days,” he said. “Unfortunately, the new studio furniture hadn’t arrived so two weeks later we had to do the whole studio again! The old mixing desk was hard wired so that was a complex task – in terms of installing the new furniture it took nearly 14 hours on the Saturday of last market day to complete – again with the help of RoxFM volunteers.” RoxFM has a back-up system so during the whole process the station was only offair for four minutes in total which was the time of changing the transmission location. When Mr Tregenza was asked if there are any other plans for RoxFM he said,

“Oh there’s still more exciting things in the pipeline for RoxFM to get us more involved in the community of Roxby Downs and Andamooka so stay tuned!” Mr Tregenza said the studio make-over was thanks in part to the Roxby Downs Community Foundation and a whole lot of volunteers. “A huge thanks must go out

to the Roxby Downs Community Foundation for enabling us to get the new electrical equipment; and to several RoxFM volunteers that donated a lot of time to make this all happen – Christine and Sean Doran, Travis Hague, Jane and Richard Gloster, Jason Lowe and Vanessa Switala all came and helped out during this time and thanks to Kerryn

Jones who was always behind the scenes massaging my temples at the end of each day!” To volunteer either on or off the microphones at RoxFM email manager@roxfm.com. au or call 8671 2545 or drop into the station on Richardson Place Monday to Friday between 10am and 5pm.
