“The Crack” takes on a life of its own!

Peckish?

The mysterious RoxFM Traffic Guy is happy to show the infamous “Crack” and is contemplating guided tours!.

RoxFM morning listeners have over the last five weeks tuned into the traffic report to learn of the now infamous “crack” in the road. The popular traffic guy segment discovered “The Crack” in one of his low flying inspections over the town and since then people are reporting to the station that it is an iconic part of the Roxby Downs landscape, some even stopping the Traffic Guy asking directions to see it for themselves. RoxFM claim “The Crack” has raised polemic debate in the community with calls to protect it by creating a ring route; reinforce it with reo bars; provide adequate protection around it; signpost it as a tourist landmark; or whether indeed since its expansion in recent times (now approximately 12cms long by 5cms wide) the name should be changed to “The Roxby Rift”. Not only this, it has been suggested to RoxFM management “The Crack” has performed at least one miracle resulting in suggestions that The Vatican should be lobbied for its beatification – most notably an image of The Crack was seen in a piece of toast during breakfast for one Roxby resident (sadly the person was hungry and ate the toast before documentary evidence could be taken). Another suggestion is it be heritage listed so it cannot be tampered with while others say enough is enough and it’s time to fill “The Crack” once and for all. The tongue in cheek saga continues each weekday morning at 8am when the Traffic Guy gives his assessment of the traffic flow and hazards around the roads of Roxby.

ABC radio from Port Pirie had an Outside Broadcast live from Roxby Downs today, June 29 from 8.30 am until 11am. The ABC team broadcasted from the Cultural Precinct at the Leisure Centre. The Monitor spoke to ABC producer Petria Ladgrove about how it came about. “Ann Jones, the presenter and I decided to do an outback trip to connect with our listeners and get out of the office. So, we are travelled to Coober Pedy and presented a show from there yesterday and then drove to Roxby for a show here today,” said ABC producer Petria Ladgrove. “Our aim was to cover as many local stories as we could in two and a half hours. “Our show was covering health, the possible expansion and what that means for the district. We were also looking at local animals - pests and natives and multicultural aspects of the community,” Petria added. Amongst the Roxby locals interviewed were KellyJo from the Royal Flying Doctor Service Auxiliary; Michelle Hales Chairperson of Roxby Downs Community Board; a local school teacher; Arid Lands representatives; young radio presenter Leroy Doran; RoxFM manager Julian Tregenza; young business owner Jess Sims (recently showcased at The Monitor) and some postie bike racers, as well as regular ABC and RoxFM listeners. The outside broadcast also counted on the participation of many locals that popped in to say hello, request a song or just wanted to support our Roxby residents being interviewed. There were also many give aways.
