Tragic news for family of missing man

Search ends near Glendambo

T

he body of missing Victorian man, Jason Richards was discovered on the weekend when a fox hunter stumbled across the abandoned ute about 10kms south of Glendambo. Police later found the body of 28 year old Richards about 500 metres from where his badly damaged ute was discovered on Saturday afternoon. The family and friends of Mr Richards who were still searching the area were notified and contrary to other reports have praised Police for their efforts in the search for their son. The search for the father of two was called off last week after repeated aerial searches turned up no confirmed sightings. Police say there appears to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, but cannot understand why Mr Richards left his vehicle and the food and water he was carrying. His car had heavy damage from driving on rough tracks. The disappearance of Mr Richards, 28, was declared a major crime after he failed to arrive in his home town of Ballarat after leaving Darwin in June. About 20 family and friends, including Mr Richards’s girlfriend, Jessie Laidlaw, and his mother, Yvonne, searched for Mr Richards over the past five weeks. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Festival off and running By Millie Thomas

T

he 2011 Red Earth festival was officially opened on Friday night, with the winners of the art exhibition announced and a performance by duo ‘Cloudstreet’. The event was well attended, with approximately 50 people soaking up the first of Roxby’s cultural festival. Rachel Young, event organiser said in her opening address that it is important that our generation pass on our skills and knowledge to the younger generation, so they do not get lost. “Many of us have been taught traditional skills and crafts that we take for granted,” she said. “We assume that everybody knows how to do

the things that we know how to do or that nobody would be interested in learning what we know, but often we’re wrong, people do want to know. “The skills that I have as an artist or that others in our community have are unique, they’re interesting and they’re worth teaching and worth learning. I’d like to encourage you all to be participants of the Red Earth Festival and beyond. “Who cares if you can’t paint like Picasso, draw like Leonardo or sing like Pavarotti, if it’s in your heart to have a try, then don’t let what other people think stop you.” She also urged all to join in the coming month’s activities, and attributed the already obvious success of the festival to the dedicated volunteers. “A festival like any community event can only be successful if it has a team of volunteers, who

are prepared to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty. We have such a team in our midst,” she said. “I’d like to thank all of our committee who have done just that, without them this would all not be possible and I can’t thank them enough. “And I’d like to thank our sponsors for without financial or in kind support, an event like this would never happen. Our sponsors and supporters for this festival are BHP Billiton, Country Arts SA, Roxby Leisure, The Roxby Downs Community Foundation, RoxFM, The Monitor, the Roxby Council, WorkPac, Desert Rox, Roxby Downs Christian Community Church, Roxby Tavern and the Roxby Downs Area School.
