Fourteen District employees appeared on the District of Chetwynd’s 2017 “sunshine list” — those earning greater than $75,000.

These numbers were released with the District’s statement of financial information for the 2017 calendar year.

Pouce Park open for day use AUSTIN COZICAR Staff Writer

The gates are open at Pouce Park in Pouce Coupe.

Pouce Park, which has been open since Firday, is now only a day use park — no camping or fires.

The park was ravaged in the June 2016 flood. Officials say they had initially planned to restore it to its initial state, however, costs proved to be high. Instead, the Village has been working to get the park to a usable state for day use.

Tumbler Ridge Geopark breaks ground on new centre Friday AUSTIN COZICAR Staff Writer

The public is welcome to the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday for the Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark’s new Geo-Interpretive Centre.

When completed, the project will include a mobile unit, a renovation of the community caboose, including an espresso bar, and gardens housing native plant species.

“The new building will be constructed using local labor and materials, and the eco-friendly building will be powered by solar panels to reduce the impact on the environment,” says officials.

The plan is for the centre to be operational in the first quarter of 2019, and the mobile unit will be on the road next summer.

The ceremony will be held at the Caboose from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm with a free barbecue and cake. reporter@dcdn.ca

How would you feel if you attended the next Northeast British Columbia community function and saw RCMP members standing around the perimeter carrying Colt Canada C8 carbine rifles?

Day celebrations where the police were on scene at the park and noticeably carrying the powerful and controversial weapon. I have wondered what reaction we would have had given the same circumstances? Would there have been a public outcry? Would anyone have noticed?

I am piggybacking off of a conversation from CBC radio that happened following Prince George Canada

Earlier this month seven protesters suspended themselves from the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge in Vancouver to protest the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion project.

I know like many of you, I read about this latest protest against natural resource development and couldn’t help but note that many of those protestors were wearing and using items that came from the resources they were protesting.

The responsible development of our natural resources is essential to the growth of our national and local economy. Not only that, but there’s no getting around the fact that in today’s society we ALL use products that come from oil, gas, and other natural resources. Practically speaking then, we need to develop these resources in order to use them.

While I don’t challenge their right to their beliefs…Canada is a great place where we are all supposed to be able to voice our opinion…it is the absolute position they have against developing our resources while using the very same resources that I have a problem with.

We all know the obvious oil products like gasoline and motor oil, as well as the natural gas used to heat our homes and the wood to build them.

But there are many other resource-based products that use plastic (an oil product), steel (metallurgical coal), and glass (natural gas is required for production) that I would argue would be virtually impossible to live without. Eyeglasses, telecommunications towers, hospitals, houses, wastewater pipes, satellites, cell phones, laptop computers, televisions, buses, cars, light bulbs, electrical equipment, ambulances, wheelchairs, tires, hospital beds, bicycles, hip replacements, and toilet paper are all made using natural resources. And these are just a few examples.

As you can see, if we were to remove all products that are manufactured with oil, gas, or other natural resources there

That is why I find it so frustrating seeing photos of protests like the recent bridge incident or listening to some Members of Parliament in the House of Commons speak against projects like the Trans Mountain Pipeline, or even get arrested at an anti-pipeline protest, knowing full well that they are taking the same planes I am to get to and from Ottawa.

How can someone support a moratorium on natural resource development while at the same time using these products on a daily basis? To me, this is an untenable position. To use natural resources and at the same time oppose their development is hypocrisy and it simply doesn’t work.

It is why I continue to highlight this hypocrisy with the #stopthehypocrisychallenge.

We need to have a practical and honest perspective when discussing our environment and the development of our natural resources. We all need to realize that we need natural resources to function in today’s society. We can be good stewards of the environment and our natural resources so that all Canadians can enjoy the benefits of both.

Many of us in the North have grown up around guns, whether it is hunting rifles or shotguns. It used to be a common sight to see them on gun racks in vehicles or on display in elaborate gun cases. Even as I type that, “Gun racks in vehicles”, I can’t believe how times have changed as laws and society has evolved.

The sight of guns is not terrifying, crazy people using

guns are terrifying. I would far prefer our RCMP members to serve and protect us using the same firepower as the criminal. Having them attend large community functions with that same firepower in hand, is not a bad thing.

The juvenile thinking that, “nothing could ever happen up in here” is misguided.

Having our RCMP members as a presence at large, outdoor events is forward think-

ing. Shouldn’t we also give them the proper tools to do their job?

While Badger received a $3,000 fine last month, one of the victims in Badger’s nosy searching says any statements from Alberta Health Services only provide a small snapshot of what actually happened.

Shannon Rus says the short version for background of this tale is simple. Jasmine Badger married Rus’ ex-husband.

While divorce proceedings were ongoing, Badger then felt the need/permission/ purpose to access Rus and her children’s health records.

Some speculate it was an attempt to help bolster the divorce case for Rus’ exhusband, others chalk it up to being nosy.

However, Badger didn’t stop with looking at Rus’ health records. Rus’ children, new partners, and business associates’ records were accessed by Badger. Unfortunately, HIA statute only looks at the previous two years of audit log access for discipline “Many of her infractions, including looking at my childrens’ health files, are now past the two year window, so she only admitted to 38 access infractions,” says Rus. Rus only caught wind that something was afoot when she took her son to the ER and her ex-husband’s number was now listed as the emergency contact.

“I couldn’t understand how it was arbitrarily changed. Alberta Health officials told me to ask for my audit logs – so I did.”

In the fall of 2016, Rus’ audit logs revealed hundreds of accesses from Fox Creek and Swan Hills Alberta, nowhere near where Rus was accessing Alberta Health services for herself or children.

“The individuals did not receive health services at the Fox Creek Healthcare Centre,” said AHS in a statement.

Rus says it is important for the public to know what can be done, both that AHS employees can randomly access anyone’s records – but that the public can also look up to see who is sniffing around in their files.

“It was an eye-opening experience.

Most people don’t know that there is a process, that they can see who is accessing their records.”

While a discipline hearing is set for Edmonton in the fall, and Badger received a $3,000 fine, plus a victim fine surcharge of 30 percent of the imposed fine, on June 25, 2018, Rus says it is the optics of a small town.

“Smaller communities in Alberta, such as Fox Creek, only have a handful of nurses and only a few on at any one time. It is important for the public to be aware of what people can do, to see who is accessing your records for no healthrelated reason.”

In October 2016, the Office of the In-

formation and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) received a report about the breaches from Alberta Health Services.

“The OIPC’s investigation found that Ms. Badger accessed the health information of the individuals 138 times between April 1, 2013 to July 18, 2016.”

Due to a two-year limitation period under the HIA, Ms. Badger pleaded guilty to accessing the health information of one of the individuals on 35 occasions between October 7, 2015 to July 18, 2016, and eight unauthorized accesses to the health information of the second individual between November 1, 2015 to July 18, 2016.

Health information accessed included medical profile, demographic information, consultation details, lab results or analysis including blood work, and diagnostic imaging results such as x-rays and MRI. Badger still works as a nurse in Fox Creek.

The OIPC referred its findings to Crown prosecutors at Alberta Justice.

Charges were laid in October 2017.

There will be a further hearing this October in Edmonton regarding Badger.

Then be a Mayor or a Councillor. (Your opportunity is coming faster than you might wish). But stay out of politics in the process.

Should I explain? Why not?

If you have axes to grind; if you want to clean house, if you want to see heads roll – well, that’s politics and you will likely find the job lacking in real, lasting satisfaction.

If your boundaries are porous you’ll soon find yourself deep into politics; you also might find more job satisfaction with your horse on the open range than you will find in local government. In local government boundaries are crucial. You want peace at the District Centre? Then keep to the duties of the Mayor and Council. You want to avoid the fickle, frightful rule of Chaos?

Then keep to the duties of Mayor and Council.

What are some duties of Mayor and Council? Let’s start with what they are not. Whatever your passion, your skills on the job, you didn’t get elected to use them. Are you an expert machine operator? You didn’t get elected to plow the snow. Are you an accountant or a lawyer? Leave that role at the door when you walk into the District Centre to serve your community as an elected official.

Maybe you are a clinical psychologist or a guidance counsellor. Good for you; but that’s

not why you were elected. You, with the rest of your Council colleagues, were elected to govern.

If you want to run a grader or counsel staff or manage the business office, well, drop off your resume and see if you qualify.

But maybe you have just retired from managing a highly successful business. Surely your management skills should find expression at the Council table.

Maybe not. Best leave them at home when on Council duty. You were elected to govern. There’s an impervious boundary between management and governance.

Mayor and Council have one employee, only one; as Mayor and Council you hire the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and evaluate the performance of the CAO on avoidance of understood limitations and achievement of understood goals.

Mayor and Council set the annual operating budget and define the ten-year capital plan. These two documents comprise major statements of goals on the achievement of which the CAO is evaluated.

Limitations on the CAO performance include keeping within the approved budget and treating the staff and electorate with dig-

nity and respect.

A further crucial limitation on CAO performance: your CAO must not fail to advise Mayor and Council in writing when Mayor and Council are about to violate a law.

I take it that you want to stay out of trouble during your term in office. That is relatively simple. I didn’t say it was a simple matter to keep everyone happy.

You won’t and it should not be your goal. But you can stay out of trouble and sleep well at night in spite of the occasional unhappy elector.

Here are some tips for a good night’s sleep: Never meet alone with anyone when on District business; your CAO or other senior management person designated by the CAO must always be present.

Follow standard processes – always. This seems too simple, doesn’t it? Don’t be fooled. It will keep you on alert.

Oh yes, those pesky bylaws.

They’re there for reasons and if the reasons no longer exist, take the bylaw off the books. But if the reasons are still valid, enforce on complaint. You can get Mayor and Council into more trouble than enough by failure to enforce your bylaws. How do I

know? Guess.

To stay out of politics while holding a political office simply means to keep everything above board, transparent, orderly, within the boundaries. You’ll sleep well at night and you’ll experience a high level of job satisfaction.

Is that all? Probably not.

Now give it some thought.

Oh, by the way, sometimes fewer words show a degree of wisdom that many words cannot express and “even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues” said the wise man.

Minister’s absence from new FSJ school announcement in an empty field criticized A playground spat over attendance has started over Fort St. John’s newly announced elementary school.

On June 28, the province announced $30.8 million for a new elementary school across from the hospital, to address a mounting crunch of classroom space on the east side of the city.

Missing, however, was Education Minister Rob Fleming, who announced the news in a press release.

The news was ...news to North MLA Dan Davies, who only learned of the school after being contacted by the Alaska Highway News.

Davies said Fleming should have made the trip to Fort St. John to announce the news in person.

This is exhausting While I find smokers and their secondhand smoke annoying, I must ask why we tolerate a much more dangerous pollutant: car exhaust.

Our society needs vehicles for our high standard of living, so some pollution is necessary.

But why we tolerate idling vehicles parked with air conditioning or heaters running so an interior can be kept the optimum temperature is a mystery to me. Often, opening vehicle windows would accomplish the same goal for the occupant.

Another bogus call and scam I just had another one of those bogus calls, purporting to be from the Canada Revenue Agency.

Most people I know are savvy to these, but there are many who aren’t, particularly seniors who have no idea what is going on. These scammers are preying like a bunch of piranhas on the uninformed and gullible, and by the sounds of it, finding it a lucrative endeavour.

When is the Canada Revenue Agency going to do something like take out a full page ad in the Times Colonist, explaining in big, colourful print, that:

• they do not make any threatening phone calls; • they do not threaten arrest; • they do not threaten criminal prosecution; • they do not accept payment in phone cards, prepaid Visa cards or Bitcoin.

It’s time for the Canada Revenue Agency to step up to the plate.

It seems everyone has an opinion on how to somewhat curtail all of these accidents on the roads.

If you really break it down, it screams training and testing to me. Am I the best driver out there? Probably not, but I took the necessary training and passed my exam which was done by the government at the time.

I would love to see the facts of how many collisions, and collisions causing death, have jumped since testing has been privatized. Gone are the days that if you couldn’t even parallel park in the testing lot you wouldn’t even get out on the road and you would fail au-

tomatically.

Now it seems if you cry, beg, bargain, are the right sex or the right race you will get your licence handed to you without a care in the world.

Yes, having the provincial government step in would cost money. But you ask anyone who has lost someone to a preventable accident how much they would give to get that loved one back, and it would far outweigh the cost to have a non-biased tester, test these drivers.

It is truly disappointing that Greyhound is discontinuing service in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba but I understand their decision from a business standpoint.

For the mop: 2 cups brewed coffee 1⁄4 cup molasses 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 2 teaspoons coarse sea salt Juice of 2 lemons 1 flat or center-cut beef brisket, 4 to 5 pounds, trimmed, with 1⁄4 inch of fat on one side Vegetable oil for rubbing

For the sauce: 1 cup brewed coffee 1 cup ketchup 1⁄4 cup dark mustard 1⁄3 cup honey 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 2 teaspoons coarse sea salt 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons hot-pepper sauce

To make the rub, mix the cocoa powder, ancho chili powder, salt, brown sugar, cinnamon, chipotle chili powder, aniseed, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, oregano, and cloves in a small bowl.

To make the mop, mix the lemon juice, coffee, molasses, vinegar, and salt in a separate bowl.

Mix 1 tablespoon of the rub into the mop. Set aside.

Rub the remaining rub all over the brisket. Cover tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours and up to 24 hours.

About 1 hour before you’re going to grill, remove the meat from the refrigerator to bring to room temperature. Rub the meat liberally with oil. Light a grill for indirect low heat, about 200 F. If using a charcoal grill, build a small charcoal fire at one end of the grill. If using a gas grill, set a burner at one end of the grill to medium-low. Clean the grill grate with a wire brush.

Put the brisket, fatty-side up, on the grill away from the heat, cover the grill, and cook until the brisket is deeply browned and blackened in spots and cooked to well-done (about 170 F on an instant-read thermometer), 6 to 8 hours.

Throughout the cooking time, brush the surface of the brisket on both sides liberally with the mop whenever the surface looks dry, about every 30 minutes. After 11⁄2 hours of cooking, put the brisket in an aluminum foil pan and return the pan to the grill away from the heat; cover the grill and continue cooking. The pan helps to retain moisture in the brisket and keep it from drying out. Once the brisket is in the pan, you need to mop only the top, or fatty, side.

If your grill has a temperature gauge, it should stay around 200 F during the entire cooking time. If using charcoal, refresh the coals about once an hour during cooking. You can add chunks of wood (such as hickory, mesquite or apple) to the fire periodically if you want a smoky flavor.

Anytime during grilling, make the sauce. In a small saucepan, whisk together the coffee, ketchup, mustard, honey, vinegar, salt, black pepper, and hot sauce. Bring to a boil over medium heat and simmer until slightly thickened, about 4 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature.

When the brisket is done, trim any excess fat (not too much, though; the crispy bits taste great) and carve across the grain on the diagonal into thin slices. Serve with the sauce. PC151828

Higher Learning: the battle against anxiety Matt Rivard Columnist The cannabis plant has historically been used worldwide to treat illness and health conditions.

There are 85 natural compounds in cannabis, known as cannabinoids, which all relieve symptoms of illness by attaching to the receptors in the brain that look for similar compounds that occur naturally in the human body. Strains of medical marijuana are specifically bred to contain particular levels of each compound recommended for different conditions.

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is the cannabis compound that has found to have significant benefits for treating people with anxiety. CBD-rich cannabis can be treated for patients seeking anti-inflammatory, antipain, anti-anxiety and anti-spasm affects. CBD does not make people feel “stoned” or “high,” and can actually counteract the anxiety-driven tendencies of THC. CBD is one 85 natural compounds found in cannabis. It is a major element, making up 40 percent of the plant’s extract and has a wider medical benefit than THC. The other popular compound to treat medical conditions is tetrahydrocannibinol, or THC, and can be

used to relax muscles, reduce inflammation, reduce seizures stimulate appetite, lower blood pressure and is an anti-depressant.

Most who use medical cannabis say it helps relieve anxiety, but others say they feel more anxious after using. There are a wide variety of cannabis strains, which have different levels of chemicals that have various levels of the common chemicals – THC and CBD. Research shows that THC and CBD can have opposite effects when used to treat anxiety disorders.

THC is linked to feelings of paranoia and anxiety, because it activates the amygdala area of the brain, which is responsible for fear. On the alternate, CBD counteracts such feelings from THC. Studies show that taking CBD on its own can lower – even eliminate – anxiety.

Most medical cannabis plants are bred to be high in levels of THC, because it is commonly used to treat more popular health conditions, such as cancer, eating disorders and seizure disorders. THC also sells, because it provides a floating, euphoric feeling that most people commonly experience when using Cannabis. Strains with high levels of CBD have only recently became popular in medical usage because

of the growing awareness of its benefits.

For those looking to treat anxiety disorders with cannabis, treatment relies heavily on the appropriate dose. Research proves that THC begins to raise anxiety levels after a certain threshold is passed. Those using medical cannabis to treat anxiety will need to find strains with high compounds of CBD.

Peace Region Pest Update – Growth Regulator Jenna Hiebert Peace River Forage Association Peace Region Forage Seed Association Hello Peace Region! This week’s pest update is taking a slightly different angle than usual as we discuss the ins and outs of Plant Growth Regulator (PGR). Within the last few decades, it has become increasingly more common to use PGR as a means to increase crop yield and manage the stand. In fact, a three-year project was conducted locally by the Peace Region Forage Seed Association (PRFSA) exploring the effects of the PGR’ trinexapac- ethyl (TE) and chlormequat chloride (CCC) .

TE is a foliar spray used post emergence and is moved through the plant via the phloem to areas where the plant feels it is needed. Chlormequat chloride (CCC) is commonly pack-

aged in the form of a salt and is water soluble in the plant. Alsike, and Red Clover plants where used to observe the effects of those two PGR’s for the purpose of the project in the peace.

Growth regulator is a naturally occurring process within plants where a chemical response (much like a hormone) is released to produce an effect to help the plants overall health.

For many, as soon as they hear of a hormone or chemical being used on products, they immediately think that it is harmful in some way. We are here this week though to ease your worries on the topic and explain the many positive uses and outcomes of it. PGR is differ-

ent from the often-feared Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) because it does not change the DNA of the plant in anyway. It simply regulates the natural growth processes within the plant to achieve optimal growth and therefore, yield.

What would warrant the use of a Plant Growth Regulator? It is used to control the development of a plant so that it reaches optimal growth standards. The PGR chemical applicant TE and CCC that were studied in the peace region particularly affect the hormone in the plant called Gibberellic acid, which is responsible for promoting elongation of the tiller (the tiller is the part of the plant which develops to flower and eventually seed). This can be used on several types of plants including cereals, legumes and grasses.

Results of the Clover study in the

Peace region show that TE reduced stem length, the effect of lodging (when the plant gets to tall and falls in on itself), and plant desiccation. PGR is applied as a foliar spray, and application timing/rates vary depending on the species of plant and growth regulator used. As a rule of thumb though, it has been found to be most effective when applied at early stem elongation (growth stage 30-32) or as a split application between growth stages 32 and 50 (stem elongation – heading) in the case of clover as seen in the study.

Carl Stewart on legitimacy, and dreams of a bike Carl Stewart Columnist When I was a young boy I wanted a bicycle. I was already using my sister’s bike on the sidewalk but that was a girl’s bike. I wanted a bike of my own. On my birthday my dad presented me that brand new bike with 26-inch wheels and bright red fenders but, like all good things in life there was a catch. My dad told me I had to walk the bicycle down to the police station where I’d be questioned on my knowledge of the rules of the road. If I passed I would get a license plate for my bicycle. Everybody who rode a bicycle had to have this license plate to prove they did know how to drive on the street, not be dangerous or cause an accident.

I recently explained this bit of history to somebody here in town and she thought it was kind of odd to make young cyclists know the rules of the road before they let out on the street, but she also thought was a good idea. I wonder how many people who

ride bicycles not just here in Dawson Creek but everywhere in our province or in Canada for that matter who know the rules of the road.

I was recently going to the Co-op gas bar and as I rounded a traffic circle I’d stayed in the left lane to make a left turn into the gas bar. I noticed the traffic light had turned red at the intersection of 103rd. All on-coming cars were stopped at that time. As I was about half way through my turn a young guy on a bicycle sailed right through the red light and rolled right up to my truck. He yelled at me to get out of his way. I asked him if he had a license to be on the street and he said he didn’t need one which makes me wonder about this state of our legitimacy in Dawson Creek or BC or even Canada. I also wonder how many people know what legitimacy really means. Let me give you a short history.

Since we can’t have a policeman on every corner making sure everybody obeys the law we have hypothetically is legitimacy means we all know stop signs mean stop and red lights means stop. All that with-

out having to have a policeman who give you a ticket if you fail to stop.

Once that the legitimacy begins to fail then people begin to act outside of the rules of society. That means running a red light because no policemen is there to catch you and accurate you are doing something that is considered wrong by the rest of society.

That also means not getting together with a bunch of buddies and do it a bit of drinking and then going onto somebody’s property to steal something knowing full well are no police around to stop you. Once you break the rules of the society you live in, you become a sociopath and you shouldn’t expect the courts or the police to give you a break because it is you who have broken the law that society lives by.

I’m sorry to say but our legitimacy is failing to protect society and that’s the way I see it.

Amy Crandall is a seventeen-yearold avid reader and novelist born and raised in British Columbia, Canada.

She began writing in elementary school, publishing her first story on Wattpad.com at the age of thirteen.

But success at provincials would be huge for the growth of the sport.

“For us to get into either tier and actually win it, would be pretty instrumental to ball itself,” he says.

Farmington Fling disc golf tourney coming up fast On July 29, Farmington Fairways will be hosting another kind of golf — disc golf.

The Farmington Fling is a Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) sanctioned event and sponsored by Tourism Dawson Creek, it’s a C tier flex start tournament.

The flex start means that groups (of three to five players) book their own tee time. While groups can play more than one round, they have to determine ahead of time, which one they intend to use to score — no cherry picking your round, they say.

It’s an 18 hole disc golf course.

Dawson Creek Disc Golf Club’s Daniel Martin says the tournament is a test run for next year, with big plans in the works with Farmington Fairways.

“This will be the first PDGA event in Northern BC history, but since it’s a flex start event it’s very easy to participate. Book your teetime and get a group you want to play with.”

The third annual Battle of the Peace to be held at the beginning of September will also be a PDGA event.

Seals to PG for last regular meet before regionals Prince George is the place to be this weekend for the Dawson Creek Seals, and it’s their final tune-up before regionals are held here in DC during the first weekend of August.

“It’s the last chance for kids to hone their strokes and decide what they’re going to swim at regionals. It’s the last chance to qualify for regionals, you have to swim at meet prior,” says coach Danny Schilds.

A number of Seals swimmers are still looking for provincial qualifying times (PQTs) in PG — while first, second, and third at the regionals get a spot at provincials in Surrey, fourth place can earn a ticket with a PQT. And, of course, you always just want to win.

“Definitely a little bit of pride. Prince George really wants to win their own meet, we really want to win their meet. We’re only taking 40 kids, so it’s going to be a tough task,” says Schilds.

They will look to carry the momentum from a strong meet in Fort St. John earlier this month.

“We had over 2,000 points, second place had just over a 1,000 points. Really strong, we had a lot of best times in Fort St John, and actually a couple of kids met provincial qualifying times,” Schilds explains.

BALDWIN Jonah was a prophet who rebelled and ran away when God told him what to do. He wound up in the belly of a huge fish for awhile until he got his priorities right.

Isn’t that the way it is with all of us? We know what God wants from us, but we want our own way. We have plans that don’t involve stepping outside our comfort zone.

We wouldn’t come right out and admit it, but we are rebellious and egocentric.

I’ve often said, tongue in cheek, “I just want God to give me my own way and then I’ll be happy”.

I’m only joking. Sort of.

Human nature is to seek the path of least resistance, and I’m a pro at finding the laziest way possible. Why exert myself when lethargy is easier?

But God has a plan for each of us, whether we’re aware of it or not. He doesn’t stand over us with a big stick forcing us to go down the road He chose. We have freedom to go down another path. But at some point in the life of every Christian, He will send a whale to swallow us alive. We will spend time-out in a dark, scary place, swinging between crying out for deliverance and railing against God in anger for making us suffer. He will wait. And when our attitude changes, our anger is spent, and we are finally compliant and teachable, He will cause the whale to retch us out onto dry land, filthy, exhausted, and broken. Then, and only then, will we be able to be molded into who He wants us to be, so that we can better accomplish some specific purpose.

Some of us require mul-

tiple whales to get it right.

Apparently I do. But I’m able now to look back on my life and see that each dark, suffocating, terrifying whale has changed my heart and my attitude a little more, and brought me into a closer relationship with God, and I am grateful that He sees something in me worth cultivating.

So, what whales have you been swallowed by in your life? What lessons have you learned from your time in them? The next time you find yourself in the belly of a whale, a frightened, filthy mess, ask yourself what you were running from that required a divine course correction, and then thank God that He still has a plan for you and thinks you are worth shaping in to something more useful.

formerly Phyllis Kelly, a long-time resident of Chetwynd, BC passed away with family by her side on Saturday, June 9, 2018 after complications from surgery in April in Dawson Creek, BC at the age of 79 years.

Phyllis was predeceased by her daughter Laurie, her parents Henry and Marjorie Dennis, her brother Calvin, and her former husband and father of her children, Edward Kelly.

Phyllis is lovingly remembered by her children: Linda Brummond (Joe Walker) of Fort McMurray, AB, Joy (Garry) Kelly-Bratt of Dawson Creek, Michael Kelly of Chetwynd, and Kate (Tim) Makuch of Dawson Creek, her siblings: Bill (Louise) Dennis of Tomslake, Byron Dennis of One Island Lake, Diane (Jack) Kortmeyer of Burnslake, as well as 57 grandchildren and great children. A Memorial Service was held on Monday, June 18, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Fellowship Baptist Church. Pastor Bill Evans officiated. Phyllis will be laid to rest with her brother, Calvin, in the Dawson Creek City Cemetery at a later date.

Sylena Beamer 1926 - 2018

Sylena Beamer passed away peacefully at Rotary Manor Care Home with her loving husband Harry at her side, on July 4, 2018 at the age of 91. She was born Wasalina Towpich on September 2, 1926, in the hamlet of Duvernay, Alberta to Arion and Dokitza Towpich. Sylena was the �ifth child of seven children.

Sylena was a devoted wife, mother, and friend to all who knew her. Sylena for a small package was a very committed, energetic force to keep up with. Sylena’s family resided in Musidora and Eaglesham, where they farmed for a few years, then returned to the Peace River county of Wanham, Alberta where Sylena’s father had purchased the General Hardware Store.

It was at this point in Wanham that a young gentleman by the name of Harry Beamer, wearing blue jeans and a buck skin jacket entered into her life. Wedding bells sounded June 29, 1954. Sylena gave birth to their son Allen, followed by daughter Barbara.

Sylena was a stay at home mom until the early sixties, and then worked at the Dawson Creek & District Hospital in house-keeping for 21 years.

Sylena and Harry enjoyed and fondly remembered their trips to Hawaii. Sylena had a passion for her �lower and vegetable garden. As her health deteriorated, Sylena and Harry became residents of Rotary Manor in 2017, where she adopted members of Rotary staff.

Sylena leaves to mourn her loving husband Harry; their children Al (Glenna) Beamer and Barb (Ian) Munro; grandchildren Bryce Beamer, Reece Beamer, Jalene (Randy) Groebmair, Danielle Miller, and Ashley Munro; great-grandchildren Lucas and Korbin Groebmair. She will be remembered by numerous nieces and nephews, and countless friends.

A funeral service was held on July 11, 2018 at the Bergeron Funeral Chapel, Dawson Creek, BC, of�iciated by Pastor Terry Coe. Interment followed in Brookside Cemetery, Dawson Creek.

Syd Rushfeldt AKA George Sydney Leech March 28, 1943 - July 10, 2018

It is very painful to have to say goodbye to someone you love but we �ind comfort knowing that our brother Syd passed peacefully and is �inally at ease. Syd passed away on July 10, 2018 at Rotary Manor in Dawson Creek.

He was 75.

Syd was born in Edmonton, Alberta on March 28, 1943 to Lillian Porter and Frederick Sydney Leech. Syd’s birthfather met his little son only once and then unfortunately in late 1944, he was killed in a WWII Canadian Air Force mission over the North Sea. In 1947, Lillian married Elmer Rushfeldt and in 1949, they moved to Pouce Coupe, BC where Elmer was a part owner of The Hart Hotel.

Syd grew up in Pouce Coupe and will be remembered as a very caring and loving brother to all of his four younger siblings. From meal preparation to teaching the basics of baseball and hockey, Syd was always there with patience, advice and guidance. He will also be fondly remembered by his nephews and nieces who spent time with him at the farm.

After Grade 12, Syd graduated with Honours in Agriculture from Fair View College. He worked at the Bennett Dam for a few years before joining Elmer and Lillian at their farm/ranching operation in Bonanza, Alberta. Syd was indispensable to Elmer with his wide range of knowledge about cattle and his innate ability to calm nervous cows.

Being very athletic himself, in his younger years he enjoyed playing hockey, curling and ball and his left-handedness became a bonus as he could throw a wicked pitch or surprise goalies with his quick left shots. No summer went by when Syd did not swim across the Peace River and back again with nothing on but his shorts.

Syd is survived by Haley (Gail) Jonstyn, Brian Rushfeldt, Wendy Christie and Bev (Ron) Pasmeny. A Celebration of Syd’s life will take place at a later date.

Dennis drove truck for 40 plus years until he became sick and was focusing on his health. Dennis loved driving and did it when he could.

Dennis and his beloved wife would travel to Las Vegas once or sometimes twice a year. He loved to go to Vegas and spend time away having fun. He also loved spending as much time as he could with his grandchildren Lily and Jacobi. He loved them so much.

Dennis enjoyed life, he lived, he laughed, he loved. He will be missed dearly.

Until we meet again, my father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

Dennis will be dearly missed by his children: daughter; April, son; Myles and granddaughters; Jacobi and Lily, and pet dog, Pip. His siblings; David, Larry (Leslie), Steven (Suzanne) and Allan (Lucy). Mother; Joyce Pocock and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many friends, brother and sister in laws.

Dennis was predeceased by his wife Terry Pocock and father Herb Pocock.

Also, mother and father in law Harvey and Mary Jules.

A Celebration of Dennis’ life was held on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at 1:00 pm from Reynars Funeral Chapel, Pauline Haycock officiated. Dennis was laid to rest beside his loving wife Terry, in the Adams Lake Sexqeltqin Cemetery.

Lila Evangeline Der�ler (Brown) 1932-2018

Lila passed away peacefully, with family at her side, in the Dawson Creek Hospital on June 15, 2018 at the age of 85.

Lila was born November 8, 1932, an only child to Elmer and Eva Brown, in the Red Cross Hospital, Pouce Coupe BC. She grew up and went to school in and around the Dawson Creek area.

In 1953, while working at the Credit Union, she met the man of her life, Ernest Der�ler. They were married soon after and within �ive years had �ive young boys all under the age of �ive! The youngest being twins! Life was very busy developing their homestead in Farmington and caring for �ive energetic sons!

Work was hard and plentiful, but the family was always rewarded with camping and �ishing trips as well as a few trips into the USA. Adventures that created many lifelong memories.

Once the boys were on their own, Lila and Ernest continued traveling as often as they could, but now enjoying a motorhome. Lila loved her time spent with family and friends both locally and afar, spending many winters in Arizona and later in Osoyoos.

After Ernest passed away in 2012, Lila moved into an apartment in town and then into Northview. There she spent many an afternoon working on puzzles, playing bingo and just enjoying the people around her.

Lila is predeceased by her husband Ernest, her son Harvey, and her parents Elmer and Eva Brown. She will by lovingly remembered by her sons Leslie (Melissa), Randy (Cathy), Brian (Carolyn) and Bruce (Lory), her 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and other family and friends.

A Celebration of Life was held June 22 at the Bergeron Funeral Chapel, and Lila was laid to rest, next to her husband Ernest, in Sunrise Valley Mountain View Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy in Lila’s memory can be made by donation to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 103-490 Quebec Street, Prince George BC V2L 5N5.
