UNITED PROGRESS INTO ROUND 2 MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

The Blades overcame non-league opposition on FA Cup third round day with the minimum of fuss at Bramall Lane. Chris Porter, Ched Evans and an own goal in the second half secured United’s passage to the fourth round. Lloyd Macklin netted a consolaton for Salisbury City. Wilson named a strong team to face the Blue Square South outfit, making just two changes from the XI that was beaten at Carlisle five days earlier. Ertl was brought in for his first start of the season and Williamson returned. Quinn missed out and Montgomery dropped to the bench, where he was joined by new permanent signing Williams and young winger Chapell. Salisbury boss Clarke named himself in his team. A minute’s applause for former loan defender Gary Ablett was staged before the action began and the Blades kicked towards the large contingent of fans who had made the trip up from Wiltshire. Ertl began at right-back and it was from his delivery that the home side first threatened - Flynn and Evans were involved before McDonald’s effort was blocked. On six minutes an Evans volley looked destined to open the scoring but his powerful effort struck Porter, who

couldn’t get out of the way, and then a long-range shot from Maguire flew over the crossbar. From Williamson’s corner, a Collins header was pushed away by goalkeeper Scott but the Blades grabbed the lead on 18 minutes. McDonald began the move, finding Williamson and the from the right he picked out PORTER, who had lost his marker and found the target, between the legs of Scott. Salisbury’s first effort followed United’s goal but a shot from player-manager Clarke was straight at Simonsen. Reid then shot over the crossbar, before the Blades began to push the visitors back once more. Flynn’s low shot was well saved by Scott, who, moments later, produced an acrobatic stop to deny Porter a second from a back post header. The visiting goalkeeper was being overworked but he was given a little respite before the break, even though United continued to ask questions. Evans fired a free-kick into the sidenetting and McDonald hammered over with his left foot after a run across the edge of the box. The final action of the half saw Williamson drill in a cross which Porter was eyeing up but a deflection off Giles resulted in the Blades striker lifting the ball over the top. Williamson was also involved in the early action of the second period, whipping in a couple of crosses and also picking up the first booking of the game, for a foul on Fitchett. The second half was just six minutes old when Wilson threw on strikers Cresswell and Beattie but Salisbury were appealing for a

penalty soon after when Giles clashed with Collins, but the referee waved play-on. The next action of referee Webb was to book Salisbury’s Webb for a foul on Beattie before the Blades doubled the advantage on the hour. It began with a Jean-Francois shot that was deflected but saved by Scott, but from the rebound EVANS diverted a shot by McDonald into the net at the Kop end. Moments later, after a double substitution by the visitors, United came close to a third but efforts by Evans, Beattie and Doyle - all in the same move - were all blocked! A third goal did arrive, however, on 72 minutes. Evans picked up the ball on the right and after slipping past Brett, the striker’s cross was deflected past Scott by an unfortunate WEBB at the near post. Evans and Ertl then had shots deflected wide as the Blades continued to pour forward and Doyle also headed over. Macklin fired over for Salisbury before boss Wilson gave a rare opportunity to 20-year winger Chapell, who replaced Williamson with 12 minutes to go. It was Salisbury substitute MACKLIN, though, who had the greater influence when he fired in a consolation, from the edge of the box, beating the outstretched right hand of Simonsen, right in front of the visiting supporters. The Blades, however, comfortably played out the final moments, plus the added time when Evans had another effort stopped by Scott, to ensure a place in the fourth round draw.

Danny Wilson was delighted to see his Blades team rewarded with another home draw, following the victory over Salisbury City in the third round of the FA Cup sponsored by Budweiser. United will face either Wolverhampton Wanderers or Birmingham City at Bramall Lane in the fourth round. The two West Midlands teams will replay next Tuesday at Molineux after playing out a goal less draw at St Andrews on Saturday. “We have to be pleased with another home tie,” said boss Wilson. “Whoever we end up playing we know it will be a very difficult game. The fact that they have a replay to play gives us the opportunity to go and watch them, as we did with Salisbury when they beat Grimsby. “Wolves are Premier League side with all that brings and Birmingham City won last season’s League Cup final and, of course, have competed in Europe this season, so whoever it is it will be a great test but one we will really looking forward to and when the time comes will be really up for.”
