YOU CAN HANDLE THEM ALL

Use This

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

-Step Model from

You Can Handle Them All to Address Behavior Challenges in the

Classroom

The model presents a complete step-by-step approach to changing inappropriate behavior to appropriate behavior.

STEP I: Identify the Behavior Behavior: Specific attitudes and actions of the student at home and/or at school. Pinpointing the students’ observed or expressed behavior is vital because it identifies the exact characteristics of the behavior. It helps teachers and administrators to avoid generalizing and enables them to zero in on the behavior they want to change. It also helps in describing the specific problem behavior to the student, colleague, and parents.

STEP II: Understand the Effects Effects: How the behavior affects teachers, classmates, and parents in the school learning environment and the home family setting. It is important to be able to point out how the behavior actually affects the teacher, classmates, and/or the learning environment in the classroom. Failure to correctly identify the effects of the specific misbehavior robs educators of the vision necessary to see the adjustments needed to get the student to change the behavior.

Step III: Identify the Causes Action: Identifying causes of misbehavior, pinpointing student needs being revealed, and employing specific methods, procedures, and techniques for getting the student to modify or change his or her behavior. Consideration is given to the primary cause of the misbehavior, primary and secondary needs being revealed, and specific suggestions for handling misbehavior.

Step IV: Avoid Mistakes Mistakes: Common misjudgments and errors in managing the student may perpetuate or intensify the problem. Often our solution to misbehavior is reacting to the behavior personally rather than approaching the problem professionally. The purpose of this step is to help teachers avoid mistakes commonly made in dealing with certain types of behavior because of how the behavior makes them feel.

The Top 20 curriculum provides students, teachers, and parents with a guaranteed, ongoing awareness and practice of healthy thinking, learning, living, and interacting. It is way beyond the “one shot in the arm” talk or programs enhanced with “bells and whistles” that are too soon forgotten. The Top 20 concepts are alive in our building and the SMART Board interactive features provide great opportunities for student involvement. All of the topics are a springboard for discussion when questions or conflicts arise. The Top 20 concepts address issues and provide guidance for appropriate actions and reactions before inappropriate thinking and behavior occur. This program is the “anti” in anti-bullying. It is the antidote to the problem. —Sister Sharon Waldoch, Principal Saint Boniface School, Cold Spring, Minnesota

TLC (Thinking, Learning, and Communicating) skills help students discover the power they have within themselves to develop their potential and make choices that enhance the quality of their lives, relationships, and experiences.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

ive Curriculum

Nine Topics –

one for Each month of the school year for Each grade Level All grades follow the same topic calendar so kindergarteners through sixth graders can learn the TLC concepts at the same time and build upon one another through elementary school. By the end of sixth grade, students will have formed social-emotional habits from seven years of growing in these concepts.

1. Creating a Culture of Learning: Our #1 job is to help others succeed. Students will learn how to show others they matter, how to own problems, and how to develop important listening skills.

2. The Line: The Line is a metaphor for understanding our state of mind, moods, or attitudes. Students will learn to recognize when their thinking is serving them well (Above the Line) or is not serving them well (Below the Line) and to become aware of the choices they make.

3. Mistakes: Students will understand the importance of learning from mistakes, identify their comfort zones, and celebrate confusion as a natural and necessary step in the learning process.

4. The Frame: We can look at the same situation in more than one way. Students will learn to reframe situations in order to see them differently and get better results.

5. EQ and Star Qualities: EQ (emotional intelligence) is essential to becoming a successful person. Students will learn about IQ and EQ and how to build upon their Star Qualities or personal strengths.

6. OPOs (Other People’s Opinions): Students will discuss True Self, define OPOs, and learn how to respond to others’ opinions.

7. Eliminating Negativity: Students will learn how to eliminate negativity in their thinking (thought circles) and in their communication with others (tornadoes).

8. Conflict Resolution: Students will learn how to respond to conflict in a positive way in order to achieve what is beneficial for others and themselves.

9. Know How We’re Smart: Students will recognize that people are smart at different things and learn how to respond if they aren’t good at something.

You Can Handle Them All:

Bullying and Cyberbullying Special Edition By Robert L. DeBruyn and Tracey H. DeBruyn

This special edition of the You Can Handle Them All book is a systematic, easy-to-use guide for educators to help them define and successfully handle 27 different bullying and cyberbullying behaviors. Since bullies don’t conform to a single profile or harass targets in the same way, this model is designed to help educators address a spectrum of bullying behaviors—both traditional and online. By working from the same foundation, members of a school team can ask, what kind of bully are we facing? Then they can apply specific solutions to deal with the aggressive behavior. It is important to know how the bully and his or her targets are situated in the social fabric of school life. Otherwise we may focus exclusively on obvious cliques, while lesser-known individuals or groups perpetuate harmful behavior. This book: • Identifies the primary causes and motives of each behavior so that it can be handled correctly. • Tells how each behavior affects teachers, students, and the learning environment. • Offers multiple strategies for handling each bullying behavior. • Reveals common mistakes to avoid when trying to correct each behavior. • Cross-references other related behaviors.

The #1 characteristic of master teachers, as defined by the Voices from the Field: What Is a Master Teacher study (see p. 38 of this catalog) is that they: Create The Environment That Advances Learning. How does a teacher create this environment? Drawing also from research by The Kettering Foundation that examined the elements of climate and culture, we have provided teachers with 35 lessons aligned with the categories of Respect, Trust, Caring, Continuous Academic and Social Growth, Opportunity for Input/Ownership, High Morale, and Cohesiveness. Each lesson is followed by a journaling activity. Aligns with Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching and the Marzano Teacher Evaluation Model.

Your Personal Learning Guide for Assessment Assessment is both an art and a science. No teacher wants to waste valuable time teaching what students already know, nor do they want to move on when students haven’t yet mastered the skills. Assessing at the wrong time, when engagement is high but mastery hasn’t occurred, can halt discovery and curiosity in its tracks. Giving grades too early can keep skilled learners from reaching for more and other learners from feeling that success is within their reach. That’s why this learning guide is such a valuable resource. Teachers receive the most important foundations to conduct fair and effective assessments. They receive multiple insights and strategies concerning the best ways to assess in multiple circumstances. And they will learn the best strategies for testing, grading, and giving feedback, as well as how to teach students to be better at self-assessing their own progress.

The Research that is the Backbone of and the First Step in becoming a Master

Research reveals how the characteristics fall into each of the five key domains of teaching:

Foundational Characteristics The vital prerequisite attitudes, beliefs, and skills a teacher must have to be effective with students. Book #121320 $19.95
