54th Annual AIBD California Society Conference: Building Design + Building Science Skyline College in San Bruno / April 2 - 4, 2014

Attendance open to all: Building Designers, Architects, Engineers, Building Contractors, Subcontractors, Energy Consultants and Students. It is our goal to increase the working knowledge of attendees in the categories of building performance, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, building materials, construction methods, design practice skills and design business media. If you work within the residential construction industry as a building designer, contractor, consultant, student or educator, this conference is not to be missed. It is the first conference of its kind addressing building design while operating hands-on devices, bridging the gap between design and science. This year our conference will be at the Skyline College in San Bruno, a large and engaging facility, with 3 days filled with speakers, presentations, demonstrations, education, and networking. There will be sessions featuring the new Building Science Lab, a full-scale two-story portion of a house, to demonstrate and learn the dynamics of home performance with actual measuring instruments. During each day there will two educational tracks, Building Science and Design Practice, where attendees may choose to bounce from one track to the other. With each day building upon the educational sessions, it will conclude with a keynote presentation, for a total of three keynote addresses during the entire conference. Our Keynote speakers are:

Rick Chitwood, author of Measured Home Performance, mechanical engineer, mechanical contractor, educator and expert on optimizing residential home performance.

Ann Edminster, author of Energy Free, Homes for a Small Planet, primary author of LEED for Homes, educator and expert on Zero Net Energy homes. Dan Perunko and Gavin Healy, owners of Balance Point Home Performance, an HVAC and insulation contracting company, educators and building science experts in the practical applications of home performance. Additional Educational Sessions: Hand Drawn Renderings; Whole Building Energy Modeling; Experience the Building Science Lab; Learn how to Specify Energy Efficiency Features; Manage Condensation, Water Intrusion and Energy in the Real World; Embrace the new Energy Code; Videos and your Business; Passive House for All of California and Successful Passive House Design. Incident Investigation Investigation for prevention: Injuries must be thoroughly understood in an effort to prevent repeat occurrences. Incident investigations are so important that both management and the Safety Committee must be involved. The investigation pinpoints the causes of an incident and also provides an accurate analysis of the steps that must be taken to prevent a recurrence. After the investigation, all missing safeguards or corrective measures must be put into place. An Investigation Team must be established and prepared before an incident happens, so that it will be ready to respond when the need occurs. Investigation Team members will change periodically, but the ideal team will include the following: • • • • •

A worker from the area where the incident occurred. A supervisor from a work area not involved in the incident. A maintenance supervisor who understands equipment or processes associated with the incident. The Safety Supervisor. A Safety Committee representative.

There are five steps to an effective incident investigation: •

Gather information: The Investigation Team learns the facts about the incident and interviews witnesses and others involved. The Incident Investigation Form is used to document the facts and organize the information.

Analyze facts: The Investigation Team identifies the incident’s causes and contributing factors and determines how the incident could have been prevented.

Report findings: The Investigation Team prepares a written report that describes who was involved, where the incident occurred, when it happened, and what caused it. The report recommends what can be done to prevent the incident from happening again.

Act on recommendations: Management reviews the report and determines how to prevent the incident from happening again. A modification to a Safety policy, procedure, or program needs to be developed and implemented to prevent future recurrences. This assures proper corrective action is taken.

SAFETY

SUMMER INTERNS AVAILABLE ROP CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY

“Construction Education is where education Meets the Real World” CONTACT: TOM ELLER INSTRUCTOR 415 488-9865 Office 415 606-1955 Cell

For the last nineteen years students all over Marin County have had the opportunity to learn hands-on skills of the construction trade. The class is eighteen weeks and is offered every Spring Semester on Wednesday evenings at Redwood High School, Larkspur. Our Assistant Instructors take groups of five students each and build a shed from the ground up. It is a memorable experience and the students and instructors look forward to every Wednesday. Students also have the opportunity to be hired for a six week Summer Internship with local contractors. They will be completely qualified to use power tools during the internship. Please support us by hiring a student for an internship. Students who interview are recommended by all Instructors to insure they are ready to work for you! You will not be disappointed. It’s a WIN, WIN, WIN for you and the students! THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT
