HELP NEEDED! SPENCER GREENE - NORTHSTAR PLUMBING, also an outstanding Petaluma Community member that would give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need, has recently been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in his mid-forties. He is the solebread winner in the family (wife Kathy and their 11 yr old daughter, Genoa). Kathy lost her Mother about three years ago and has spent much of her time caring for her ailing father who passed away January 29th, just three weeks prior to Spencer’s diagnosis. In addition to the current monthly bills, which they have cut drastically with this news, they now also carry the mortgage on her parent’s home until the logistics are worked out. Hopefully, the home will be rented soon (fortunately, there is a good possibility that there is someone already interested) and kitchen appliances need to be upgraded and/ or replaced. Carpets and paint are also needed to get the home in rentable condition. If you or someone you know has any of these appliances or services available at low/ no cost, it would be so greatly appreciated. Please let us know how to contact you and we’ll be in touch. If this is not something you are able to help with, but are interested in helping, a Dine-n-Shop-Donate at Beyond the Glory Sports Bar & Grill will be held Tuesday, March 25, 2014 all day with a Stella & Dot rep there at 5:30 pm. both donating a nice commission from sales. If you would like to support the Greene Family, please come to the event and remind your server you are there to support Spencer Greene. Thank you! Barbara Jones Membership Manager

There will be sessions featuring the new Building Science Lab, a full-scale two-story portion of a house, to demonstrate and learn the dynamics of home performance with actual measuring instruments. During each day there will two educational tracks, Building Science and Design Practice, where attendees may choose to bounce from one track to the other. With each day building upon the educational sessions, it will conclude with a keynote presentation, for a total of three keynote addresses during the entire conference. Our Keynote speakers are:

Rick Chitwood, author of Measured Home Performance, mechanical engineer, mechanical contractor, educator and expert on optimizing residential home performance.

Ann Edminster, author of Energy Free, Homes for a Small Planet, primary author of LEED for Homes, educator and expert on Zero Net Energy homes. Dan Perunko and Gavin Healy, owners of Balance Point Home Performance, an HVAC and insulation contracting company, educators and building science experts in the practical applications of home performance. SAFETY

Eye Protection The importance of eye protection: Certain activities carry the risk of eye injury or blindness. The majority of eye injuries are the result of flying objects, falling objects, or sparks striking the eye. Other possible hazards that require eye protection include: •

Fumes

Vapors

Chemical splashes

Extremely hazardous lights, such as those that may occur while welding

Using eye protection: •

A hazard assessment must be conducted for each task to determine what personal protective equipment (PPE) is needed.

Know the correct use and limitations of eye protection.

Eye protection must accommodate prescription eye wear. Prescription eye wear is not a substitute for safety glasses or goggles.

Tasks requiring face shields and welding helmets also require goggles or safety glasses.

Goggles must be worn if there is the potential for a hazardous chemical vapor, chemical splash, small particles, or dust to enter the eye.

Safety glasses must have side shields.

Filter lenses must be chosen based on the specific light hazard and the requirements under the ANSI Z87 standard for eye protection.

If the eye protection is penetrated by an object or a chemical splash, rinse the eye for 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

Care and maintenance of eye protection: •

Inspect eye protection prior to use.

Store properly, away from temperature extremes and sunlight, and where lenses will not become scratched.

Always wear the proper eye protection where required, Marin Builders Association ◆

SAFETY
