Van Hargis Van Hargis is known as one of today’s most versatile horsemen/ clinicians. Van has trained and competed in the show arena in events ranging from reining to calf roping, and competed in the rodeo arena in the timed events. Training horses for Van all started over 35 years ago for the wife of world-renowned saddle maker Billy Cook. Van’s practical experiences in the show ring, rodeo arena, and on the ranch coupled with a dynamic speaking ability have made him one of the most exciting presenters and requested clinicians. Van uses each presentation he gives as an opportunity to share how the horse has helped him realize the important lessons in his life. He utilizes the arena and the horse to emphasize the most fundamental lesson: the need for a solid foundation, in horse training as well as everyday life. Van’s ability to use the horse to educate, motivate, inspire, and entertain will encourage you to take a long look at your life, your relationships, and your horsemanship.

Kalley Krickeberg Kalley is a lifelong horsewoman. She grew up on a large farm in the Midwest that raised cattle, sheep, and also raised, trained, and sold Polo prospects that were mostly horses off the track. Kalley got her formal start in a small hunter/jumper barn, studied dressage and eventing, but her love of the sport of polo and developing the young horses into confident, well balanced athletes for the game, always drew her back. Kalley has also worked in the recreational field of Natural Horsemanship for approximately 10 years, where she developed a strong following for her gifts in training young horses and liberty horses. Kalley currently has reining horses, casually plays polo, and maintains a small training operation open to the public in Petaluma, California. Kalley also travels the country giving highly successful clinics, and has a full line of beautifully produced training DVD’s and training equipment available through The Horse Education Company. Kalley is the inventor and patent holder for the innovative, and highly sought after, Hybrid Halter.
Shannon Dueck Born in Austin, Texas, Shannon grew up outside of Vancouver Canada. Her mother Jacqueline Oldham was an “S” dressage judge and instilled in Shannon a love and knowledge of classical dressage from an early age. In 1994, Shannon spent many months training in Holland as a working student for Bert Rutten – this was when she decided to get serious about dressage. She rode in her first international competition in 1995 and was long-listed for the Canadian Equestrian Team in 1996. In 1995 she bought her first real star, Korona, as a 3 year old from Bert Rutten. The partnership was very successful, beginning with an Individual Silver Medal at the Pan Am Games in 1999. In 2002 at the World Championships in Spain they were the top Canadians, finishing 23rd in the Grand Prix and 25th in the Grand Prix Special. After winning the Canadian League World Cup Final in 2002, they represented Canada at the World Cup Final in Sweden in 2003, they were also a part of the Canadian Team at the Open European Championships in England, which secured an Olympic berth for the Canadians at the 2004 Olympics. But did not get to represent Canada at the Olympics – Korona was ill during the Canadian Olympic Selection Trials.

Storme Camarillo Storme Camarillo could, literally, ride before she could walk. At the age of two, she was napping upright in her pony’s saddle, on her father’s South Dakota ranch. By five she was winning junior rodeo championships. At the age of seven, she attended Sharon Camarillo’s barrel racing clinic and her young life was forever changed. Recognizing her gift, Leo and Sharon Camarillo made arrangements to take in the young prodigy, and she came to live with them in California. Raising her as their own, the Camarillo’s taught her everything they knew about horsemanship, business and the western lifestyle. Horsemanship and barrel racing propelled Storme to college, providing scholarship opportunities that funded a successful career culminating with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. At an early age she assisted in teaching Camarillo Horsemanship Clinics throughout the country while building a successful barrel racing career. Now residing in Colorado, Storme continues to give her all to her family, friends, barrel racing, and her students.

Curtis Anderson In less than eight seconds, Curtis Anderson’s life was changed forever. On June 26, 2002, Anderson, a 27-year-old bull rider with 10 years experience, lost his balance and was struck in the head by the bull he was mounted on twice during the Ponoka Stampede. Anderson was rushed to the University of Alberta Hospital where he would spend time in a drug-induced coma. Anderson required the assistance of two nurses to get out of bed each morning and a wheelchair to get around. Over time, Anderson began to walk on his own again, and is now an advocate for brain trauma awareness.

A SPECIAL BOND BETWEEN A GIRL AND HER HORSE! Catch up on the last year and the advances Taryn, winner of the 2016 Youth Essay Contest, has made with Angel, RHR Hancocks Drifter. RHR Hancocks Drifter “Angel” is a very loveable, curious, bold and opinionated fire-breathing dragon. Angel is a very strong left brained extrovert. She and I match each other perfectly and get along very well. Angel has a variable demeanour that changes based on how you are feeling and what you are doing with her. She can be very calm, easy and mild or outgoing, animated and lively. She loves being with people, eating peppermints and learning. She detests doing the same thing a few days in a row, being micromanaged and getting teased about being PMSy. Training has included bomb proofing, saddling, bridling, liberty, ground tying and longeing. Working with her is such a joy and she’s very easy to handle and a soft willing partner. Some of my favourite days with Angel are the days I ground tie, groom, saddle, bridle then go for a walk with her. I have never decided upon one training method. I have never found one trainer I completely agree with so I read and watch many articles and videos from many trainers. Clinton Anderson, Linda Tellinginton-Jones, Rick Gore, Warwick Schiller and Pat Parelli are just some of many resources for training. My own belief is that a horse should not be punished for being a horse, should not be forced into submission or stressed during any training but receive guidance instead. As a result, Angel is very trusting and is in healthy, happy and trainable frame of mind. I have always felt strongly about having the whole horse’s body in a willing control with or without any tack, in any place, at any time before presenting something new or challenging. When presenting
new things, I do it very slowly and orderly, building up her confidence in new things. One example is that Angel found tarps very scary, so I started with just leaving one in the pasture, then I put her in the round pen with one so she could approach on her own time. Next was having her eat some grain off the tarp, by having her head low and chewing it shows her it is safe. Then having a little tarp tunnel for her to play and hide inside. Now you can run to her in the pasture and toss the tarp on her without even a blink from her. Angel is a very sweet girl who is turning out as a wonderful therapy horse and in a few years will be a wonderful lesson horse from time to time. Angel got a tendon injury in her left hind leg from playing in the pasture a little too hard. She has rapidly healed and you can’t notice it at all anymore. She will still be able to get great training for a particular discipline. From what I can tell she seems like she would be a wonderful cutting, reining or jumping horse. Angel is highly intelligent and demonstrates quick agile movements, I do feel like cutting will be her best discipline match. I love Angel so much, she’s got a stunning personality and look. She is very much a part of me and is part of my family, made herself quite at home too. Laying down, sleeping everyday at 11-1pm to enjoy the sun and the birds. I can’t imagine ever selling or loosing her, she is a very special unique girl never to be replaced. We really are friends and completely joined together. I could never have gotten a horse so perfect, special, unique and beautiful if it wasn’t for the Mane Event essay contest. She is truly one of a kind, thank you.

The crowd pleasing Trainers Challenge returns to see 3 top trainers try their hand at breaking 3 horses from K4 Ranch. Clayton Edsall - California Trey Young - Florida Brendon Clark - California
We are extremely excited to be supplying the horses to be used in the Mane Event Trainer’s Challenge!! What better opportunity to see our stock put to the ultimate test? At Ace Of Clubs Quarter Horses our continual goal is to breed our vision of a versatile horse; strongly believing in producing horses with heart, intelligence, athletic ability, talent, and size, with good looks to boot! Crucial selection and breeding decisions focusing around the Bueno Chex & Blueboy Quincy bloodlines are made knowing the importance of strong conformation, a willing attitude, and the ability to cope under pressure. We have been very fortunate over the years, to have raised some exceptional colts & fillies that have made superb all round ranch horses that we are very proud of. The horses that will be used in the Trainers Challenge have been minimally handled. Glen Stewart, Martin Black, and Shamus Haws will have their work cut out for them. You will be able to watch a stock horse in the making from the ground up. Enjoy the 2017 Mane Event and especially the Trainer’s Challenge. Should you have the opportunity to meet any of the Barker family, please take a moment to say thank you for putting on a world class event. The time, dedication, and organization taken to host an exhibition of this size and calibre is too often overlooked. Thank you. Ace Of Clubs Quarter Horses Lori, Shelbie, & Mandi Matheson

Trainers Challenge The Trainers Challenge is an unique opportunity to see 3 trainers put their skills to work to show the public their abilities and methods of training an unbroke horse. This is NOT the way these trainers would normally start a colt, what they do in the 3 days of the Challenge they might take 30 – 60 days or more to get the horse really working well at all of the different skills they are training into the colts. This Challenge is meant to be a venue to educate the public that there are more than one or two ways that you can start a colt and succeed at getting a quiet broke horse.
Glenn Stewart Riding anywhere from 30 to 60 client horses a year Glenn Stewart takes his 30 years’ experience and provides horses with a solid foundation. Working with young horses, restarting and challenging horses from all over North and South America. Stewart’s skills are diverse. He is comfortable holding clinics, demonstrations, as well as colt starting sessions. Stewart is a former champion of the Cowboy up Challenge at the Calgary Stampede. He was chosen as a Canadian representative in 2012 for Road to Horse. Nominated as Western Horse Review’s Horseman of the Year, he takes his years of experience and provides horse and rider with valuable skills for the future.
WARNING!! Riding horses can cause extreme Happiness which can lead to a very serious, expensive Horse Addiction! 48 The Mane Event Show Guide
The format is 3 – Trainers, 3 – Horses and 3 – Judges. Keep in mind that these horses will have just started their training to become that broke horse. The trainers are progressing far quicker than they normally would always keeping the horses best interest at heart.

Martin Black Martin Black is a 5th generation Idaho rancher and 4th generation rodeo competitor. He has a lifetime of experience in handling horses, cattle and roping. In the formative years of his horsemanship, he was strongly influenced by the CaliforniaSpanish style of horsemanship, and has earned money in stock horse events, NRCHA events, rodeo events, and more.
Shamus Haws Shamus was first placed upon a horse the day he was brought home from the hospital. By the age of 8 years old, he was showing in and doing quite well in Youth Horse Shows and Rodeos. By the age of 11, he had started his first colt. Soon after he was riding colts and training for the general public. Shamus has been ranching, riding & training horses ever since. Knowing that there was a better way, his exposure to real horsemanship resulted in a commitment to work with horses for a better change, not only in the horses but also within himself Shamus and his wife, Jolyn also operate a working cattle & horse ranch. Their brand has been passed down for 5 generations. Their ranch is considered one of the largest & most reputable Quarter Horse breeders in the western United States. Along with Shamus’ clinics and training, he personally oversees 9 breeding stallions, 100+ broodmares, over 200 head of horses total and a commercial herd of cattle.
50 The Mane Event Show Guide
His basic philosophy is to “build the horse’s confidence in everything he does. He believes that everyone can improve their horsemanship by first learning how to be more effective presenting themselves to their horse, then by understanding how the horse perceives them as an individual. Martin will build confidence in the horse and rider and take you to the next level, whatever that might be. Learn more at www.martinblack.net.
