Doug Mills Horsemanship

Doug Mills has built his training program around horses and people. Born and raised on a working cattle ranch in Price, Utah he started his first horse when he was eight years old under the guidance of his brother in law, George Fasselin. That experience was invaluable as he learned how to safely get around the wild ones. He also learned the value of giving a horse a job then leave him alone. In his early teens Doug watched a round pen demo that would forever change how he thought about horses. The trainer had a BLM Mustang that he rode in a couple hours with no restraints. That was unheard of in those days. That demo ignited a passion in Doug and set him out on his path to developing one of the most trusted and proven methods available. More information became available via clinics, videos, books and articles. Doug became a junkie. Working horses at liberty he learned how to teach horses without restraints. After experiencing the incredible results using his newly developed technique, Doug’s excitement turned into a passion of needing to share what he had learned with others through clinics and demos. Most of the people at the first clinics were new to horses so he learned how to break down difficult tasks into simple steps. He found a couple of common problems people were having, one was communication. The commands were

too fast with inconsistent angle, pressure and timed release. The other was a lack of leadership, horses were walking all over the owners. Doug came up with the simplest manoeuvre he knew of that would address both problems, then tested them at clinics. The goal was for the greenest rider to have success with the toughest horse. This was the beginning of Training Thru Trust! He continued to add steps to the program teaching more and more body control on the horse using the same communicative steps. He knew he was on to something when he recognized a tremendous improvement in himself and his horses. Slowing down, being very clear and working in patterns made things simple to teach to both horse and people. Doug has always had a passion for well broke, athletic horses so showing reining and working cow horse was the likely place for him to learn from the best in the business. He took all he learned about training and showing performance horses and applied the Training Thru Trustphilosophy and techniques. Doug believes the key to willingness is choices without restraints. “Making the right thing easy, and the wrong thing hard.” Some of his greatest achievements have been making the finals at the Snaffle Bit Futurity in Reno Nevada in the Ltd Open where he finished in 6th place along with winning the Ltd. Open at the Stallion Stakes in Nampa, Idaho. He rode a horse called ‘He’s Wright On’, a stallion that he bought as a yearling, trained and showed him to his 4 year old year, then sold him to Gardiner Quarter Horses from Ashland, Kansas where he went on to win over $150,000 in NRCHA premier events. Doug also made the Open Finals and won the Ltd. Open at the Stallion Stakes the following year on a stallion called ‘Shiney Playboy’ that he is still co-owner of today. He is also a 5 time Mane Event Trainers Challenge Champion and winner of the first European Trainers Challenge. Doug credits many clinicians and trainers for the success of his program, but the horse is still his most influential teacher. In (1989) with his wife, Lynette and their four children, (Kyle, Kade, Kaylee and Kelcie) he moved to British Columbia, Canada as a farrier and horse trainer, where he has continued to build his “Training Thru Trust”program.

Sandi Simons Horsemanship

Sandi Simons was a typical Aussie country kid that would get on any horse and ride! But like many women she discovered that when she got a little older became a wife and mother (not just of one or two children but five!!) she developed that innate sense of self preservation and her confidence in the saddle and dealing with horses was not what it used to be! This is a familiar story that Sandi hears and sees time and time again- one to which she can definitely relate. Using her own experiences, unique style and incorporating some of the training methods of her husband David Simons, Sandi has helped thousands of women around the world regain the confidence they once had in themselves to then get back in the saddle and enjoy a safe, harmonious relationship with their horses. There is an added bonus for anyone that spends time learning Sandi’s methods, women of all ages, experience and at various stages of their life journey come together to learn from one another and give each other support. Perhaps it was a bad fall, injury, absence from the saddle, an unsuitable horse or just the emotional ups and downs of life that has taken a toll on someone’s confidence it really doesn’t matter, the outcome is the same; it leads to fear and apprehension doing the thing that women who love horses most want to do – ride and enjoy the freedom and time with their horse away from life’s demands!

Sandi’s insightful, compassionate nature makes her a truly unique coach and combined with her own experiences has enabled her to provide a training system that was sadly lacking for the silent majority in the horse world – women who love horses and need to feel nurtured, competent and inspired. There are plenty of laughs along the way and sometimes tears but always in a safe and relaxed environment. Many of the women who attend either a weekend clinic or a week long live in ‘Confidence Camp’ think they are going to ride and find a better way (which indeed they do) but equally many come away having found out more about themselves than they could possibly ever have imagined! If you are feeling a little jaded, uninspired or just down right scared of where you are at in your life with horses, contact Sandi and speak to her – it will be one of the nicest and most inspiring things you could do for yourself and your horse!

Trainers Challenge

3 Trainers - 3 Horses - 3 Judges 1 Champion

The Trainers Challenge is an unique opportunity to see 3 trainers put there skills to work to show the public their abilities and methods of training an unbroke horse. This is NOT the way these trainers would normally start a colt, what they do in the 3 days of the Challenge they might take 30 – 60 days or more to get the horse really working well at all of the different skills they are training into the colts. This Challenge is meant to be a venue to educate the public that there are more than one or two ways that you can start a colt and succeed at getting a quiet broke horse.

Back Country Horsemen Society of BC 22 Chapters all over BC - almost too much fun! Volunteers helping to maintain access and trails both front and backcountry

International Podiatry & Soundness Solutions. Providing Current & Evolving: Technologies, Diagnostics, Ideas, Techniques, Therapeutics & Resources

The format will have 3 – Trainers, 3 – Horses and 3 – Judges. Keep in mind that these horses will have just started their training to become that broke horse. The trainers are progressing far quicker than they normally would always keeping the horses best interest at heart.

Complete Specialty & Standard Horseshoe & Tool Inventory On Hand.

The judging at this challenge is based 10% on the horse, 60% on the trainer’s ability to train the horse and 30% on the trainer’s ability to educate the attendees. So the trainer that gets his/her horse to do the most or does a better presentation at the finals won’t necessarily win. The winner of the challenge will be the trainer that can achieve the highest success with both the horse & the Spectators.

Local, National & International Shipping. Imaging & Full Medical & Diagnostic Services.

Our challenge would not be the high quality that it is without the high standards that our judges bring to the event. A special thank you to our fabulous judges this year! We are proud to have the horses of The Douglas Lake Ranch as part of our Team! 30 The Mane Event Show Guide

Glenn Stewart

Trainers Challenge Competitor & Horsemanship

Glenn Stewart is an International Horseman he travels all over the world giving demonstrations, presentations and clinics and he has students that travel from all over the world to learn his horsemanship program at his home location in Fort St. John, BC Canada. Glenn has had amazing life experiences working up in the mountains with wild horses and a strong desire to continuously master the art of horsemanship. He has started over 2000-colts in his career learning lessons from each one as he attempts to do the right thing to help the horse become successful in what they are going to do.

“Horsemanship is the way the human interacts with the horse. It is natural if it makes sense to the horse and considers the horse’s point of view. Regardless of the dream or discipline, whether it may be for pleasure riding, cutting, reining, dressage, ranch roping, jumping, or racing, the common denominator is always the horse. If you truly understand what is important to them and care what is important to them, the ability to read each as an individual and know the why, then the how of responding, the possibilities for what horse and human can achieve are endless.” - Glenn Stewart

Glenn offers year round educational opportunities and numerous programs throughout the year, including, clinics, demonstrations, colt starting sessions, a 3-month Horsemanship Course, Front Row Seating, Extreme Horsemanship Competition, as well as the High and Wild a Horsemanship Learning Adventure Series. He has had the unique privilege of directly studied first hand with many of our legends.

When people say it’s just a horse, they just don’t understand!

David Simons

Trainers Challenge Competitor & Horsemanship

From David’s lifelong involvement with horses he believes that a horse at any stage of its life and from any background can be trained in a non-threatening way, to promote calmness and responsiveness. After a lot of research David found out that the “John Lyons Training Method”, which uses a combination of round pen work, ground control, ridden work and problem solving aspects, best addressed his personal training requirements and mirrored his aims and goals in horse training. In 1998, David and his wife Sandi, headed over to Colorado in the USA, where David underwent an intensive accreditation training program with John Lyons and became the first John Lyons Accredited Trainer in Australia. David has built on what he learned from John Lyons, developing his own unique training method. He is now considered to be one of Australia’s leading trainers and educators, travelling extensively around the country to pass on his skill and teach others how to establish a training routine that builds the foundation of an harmonious relationship with their horse. David’s personal competition interest is Reining, yet he is just as passionate about the horse performing to the best of its ability in any discipline. At their home in Drysdale in Victoria, David and Sandi have a private

training facility where David not only trains his own horses for competition but horses of all ages, sizes and disciplines. And whether that is a weanling needing to be taught the basics on its journey to becoming a happy, calm and responsive horse, a youngster having its first experiences under saddle, or a high level performance horse in reining or dressage needing a some help to add to its performance all the horses will benefit and become ‘winners’ with David’s system.

A Cowboy Prayer Dear God Thank you for the life you have given me Thank you for the meadows, plains & mountains Thank you for reminding me that life is special And that the work I do is appreciated Thank you for my most trusted companion and friend, my horse May the sun never set on this way of life.

Sonny Garguilo

Trainers Challenge Competitor & Horsemanship

Sonny Garguilo was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the furthest place from a horse. At an early age he discovered a true love and respect for the horse.
