Have we got ideas for you!

ANOTHER SEASON IS IN FULL SWING and as we all know “it ain’t over till the fat lady sings.” This chubette hopefully will be singing the greatest Motown hits by the end of October! This year has been all over the map for us at The Maine Tour Connection. Weather was unusually cool until the beginning of summer and I still had my flannel pj’s on hand on the official first day of summer! Once we got through this unusual weather pattern it has been gorgeous here. Thank you for bearing with the state of Maine and its Department of Transportation (MDOT) during the Route 3 construction in Bar Harbor and the Route 1 project in Thomaston. I am buying orange safety jackets for Chris and Donna who are in constant contact with our vendors for routing in and around the island. Our vendors have been wonderful to work with in assisting us with routes and adjusting times. The Maine Lobster Festival celebrated its 70th year in 2017. This is always a popular summer tour in early August to experience the best of Maine. Arrive in the south coast for a night, venture up the coast to Boothbay Harbor, Rockland, or Bar Harbor for a night or two and then spend a day at the Maine Lobster Festival. For our neighbors to the South and West of us, Maine is a great escape from the heat and humidity. Nothing beats a summer or fall day on a harbor cruise to see puffins nesting, whale watching, or seals basking on the rocks in Linekin Bay. And is Canada a good deal now

or what? With the exchange rate in our favor a Two-Nation Vacation is an outstanding value. Be it the Tattoo Festival in Nova Scotia, St. John City Market in New Brunswick, or the lupine flowers in PEI, we can take you there for a memorable trip. Don’t forget your kilts! How about trying other popular events in Maine next summer? Since we are seeing that our younger travelers want more time on their own, why not hub and spoke in Portland? There are a variety of fairs and festivals, wineries, craft breweries, concerts that the boomer generation is flocking to. Portland has been ranked as one of the top craft beer cities in the US. There is also a festival that celebrates the totally unique beverage called MOXIE. Give us some dates and we will find you fun! Perhaps one of your customers wants to plan an employee getaway. Make it special for everyone, plan it for Maine. And fall in New England…is there any other place as gorgeous with our multi colored leaves? Yeah, I know other places are pretty too (don’t get upset my colleagues in other places) but the depth and range of foliage color here is beyond compare. Traditionally our “season” peaks on Columbus Day (the second Monday in October) but seems that the season is going longer into the third week of October. And one last note, our sales director for Maine Tour Magazine is retiring after this issue. We thank Alice Mazurie for all the work she has done growing this publication and the many laughs she has given us over the years. All the best to her! See you at ABA in January.

THE PROMISE OF BY MARY LYONS

THE WORDS “MADE IN MAINE” ARE SIMPLE ONES, but bywords for so much that is celebrated about the state and its craftspeople. From Bath-built ships to the Bean boot, and on to the hundreds of potters, jewelers, fiber artists, and other creators around the state, Maine’s makers are known for superb quality.

A walk through the craft tent at the Common Ground Country Fair, craft fairs statewide, or the Center for Maine Craft at the West Gardiner Travel Plaza—these experiences and visits to artisan shops and galleries are an education in just how numerous and how accomplished Maine makers are. Among the institutions famed for keeping Maine’s craft traditions alive are Haystack Mountain School of Crafts on Deer Isle, the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Newcastle, Rockport’s Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance with its annual festival and market in Bar Harbor, Portland’s Maine College of Art, and the Heartwood College of Art in Biddeford.

For motorcoach tours, there are an array of “Maine made” experiences. The state effort called Maine Made has been promoting crafts for over 30 years, and has over 2100 members. It is hard to travel far in Maine without enjoying the work of at least one of them. The organization says it “builds recognition for Maine products, their producers, and Maine industries.” The Maine Crafts Association says it “acts to strengthen individual artists, Maine communities, local economies, and the visitor experience by

making Maine a national crafts destination.” One focus of such cultural tourism is the Maine Craft Weekend, held amidst October’s foliage, when the beauty of the state’s nature mirrors the beauty of its art. For motorcoach tours, there is an array of “Maine made” experiences to satisfy the traveler who seeks something special, something “Maine.” In York, Stonewall Kitchen is an example of how Maine made quality grew a farmer’s market stand into an internationally successful specialty food business. At the company’s appealing headquarters, store and café, visitors can buy jams, condiments, and kitchen accoutrements, as well as watch the careful preparation of the brand’s acclaimed products, or take a cooking class. In Maine’s Lake Region, the town of West Paris is known both for the lilacs and wildflowers at McLaughlin Garden and Maine Balsam Fir Products, where balsam pillows and other products are handmade. Visitors see the onsite balsam grove, watch the small-scale manufacturing process, and have the opportunity to craft their own balsam bags and take them home as a fragrant reminder of their Maine experience. Near the ski town of Bethel, Maine Line Products, “Home of the Weatherstick,” is the place to pick up the miracle stick that predicts the weather, as well as other useful Mainemade craft items. The Maine State Prison Store, in midcoast Thomaston, showcases a huge variety of wooden goods, from ship models to furniture, and welcomes bus Continued on Page 13

tours to stop by and pick up a quality bargain. A stop to just browse is also enjoyable, given the wide assortment of Maine-made goods on hand. On the way south, New Gloucester’s 5,000-acre Pineland Farms has evolved into a community hub. Motorcoach groups can learn about the working farm, enjoy a horticulture tour, or work with Pineland to design a program customized to their particular interests. Smaller groups can take the Pineland Trolley; all groups can enjoy the New Market with locally sourced foods and the Café and gift shop. In nearby Yarmouth and in South Portland, Artascope offers tour participants the chance to create their own sea glass keychains or jewelry, as well as a palette of DIY artistic options. For tour members who have never seen a life-size chocolate moose, Len Libby Chocolatier is the place to go. Just south of

Looking, participating, purchasing, or appreciating —however tours choose to relate to Maine’s crafts—their experience will be enhanced by the beautiful things that are “Made in Maine.” Portland, next to an extensive saltwater marsh, the confectioner displays the awe-inspiring chocolate moose as well as a video about its construction. Tours cannot partake of the moose, but they definitely can enjoy an ice cream cone or choose from an array of Mainecrafted candies. Further south, in Kennebunk, River Tree Arts has a “Make Your Own Maritime Souvenir Art Project,” a fun way to make something personal in Maine, and take it home as a souvenir. There is a choice of three projects—decorating a lobster buoy; making a driftwood sign; or painting two maritime ornaments. Looking, participating, purchasing, or appreciating—however tours choose to relate to Maine’s crafts—their experience will be enhanced by the beautiful things that are “Made in Maine.” n

Along for the Ride Military Reunion Tours

T

By Mary Lyons

“We loved going to the Shipyard.”

he character of the military experience often results in a lifetime bond, and military reunions are a fun opportunity for participants to renew their special connection. Two recent military reunions with itineraries planned by The Maine Tour Connection had that renewal opportunity amidst a swirl of activities. The USS PURDY (DD-734) Association reunion was planned for Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and started off with something of a crisis—their reunion planner closed without notice in November, and “I’m looking at a reunion in April,” said Association President Bill Dow. Dow not only served on the Purdy, which was a destroyer in service for an exceptional three decades, but says “my dad worked on building it during the war.” Despite the unnerving interruption in plans for the trip, Dow said, “It turned out to be one of our better reunions.” He credits both The Maine Tour Connection, which pulled off some special access visits to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the John Paul Jones House, and the staff at the Holiday Inn Portsmouth.

16 n n Touring Touring New New England England and and Eastern Eastern Canada Canada 16

Of The Maine Tour Connection he says, “All in all they did a great job for us.” Of one tour highlight Dow says, “We loved going to the Shipyard. That was really special, especially because of us being in the navy. We had the tour guide get on the bus at the entrance, and we could get off and have a picture taken at the submarine monument. It was a good day, really good, we also got a closeup of the naval prison and were given the history of it.” Additionally, the 45-member tour visited the Kittery Historical & Naval Museum, the submarine museum USS Albacore, and the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, plus city historic districts and waterfront. For free time in town they received admissions to charming Strawbery Banke, a historic village recreation. “All in all,” sums up Dow, “everyone opened doors for us and helped us out. And the lady at The Maine Tour Connection did it all. Set it all up for us.” Another reunion involving The Maine Tour Connection was that of Sampson Air Force Base; it had three motorcoaches with over 100 participants, meaning routing and scheduling took some military precision.

“All in all,” sums up Dow, “ everyone opened doors for us and helped us out.“ Walt Steesy, who has been planning all the base reunions—this is the 27th—says it takes “A lot more than most people believe. A lot more. This is the first year we used an inbound tour operator.” Based in Portland, his tour had a busy three-day schedule of activities. As editor of the Sampsonite newsletter and reunion organizer, Steesy says he has “probably communicated with 20,000 men over the years.” At this point, Sampson reunion tours have been to every state except West Virginia, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, and Steesy usually visits venues at least three times prior to committing to them as destinations. The tour’s Maine itinerary was packed, including visits to Maine Balsam Fir, Stonewall Kitchen, Len Libby, the Nubble Lighthouse, Kennebunkport, Portland Head Light, and the World War II Liberty Ship Memorial. “We had a grand time,” says Steesy, noting that tour favorites were the Maine Military Museum, a Songo River Queen lunch cruise, and a lobsterbake at Foster’s Downeast Clambake.

Of the Maine Military Museum, a private museum in South Portland, Steesy says founder, director, and curator Lee Humiston “has done a wonderful job on a shoestring and with a lot of volunteers—putting together something that is really, really nice. He’s got a phenomenal thing there. For any military group going to Portland, that should be a must-do.” The lunch cruise was a hit, too. “We had a beautiful day . . . That was a fun thing.” However, “the thing people talked about most,” according to Steesy, was Foster’s Downeast Clambake. “They do a nice job there. They had someone at every table helping you take the lobster apart. That was great.” And a talk by a lobsterman to the group about sustainability in the lobster industry was the personal favorite of Steesy and his wife, Mary, the reunion cohost. With all the effort, all the planning, all the activities, there is one thing at the heart of the Sampson reunion, as well as so many others. “The biggest thing,” Steesy observes, “is everyone getting together.”n

Destination Northeast Scenic Byways

Flume Gorge, Franconia Notch State Park, New Hampshire

By Diana Burke

T

he Northeast—New England and eastern Canada—is legendary for its wealth of travel attractions, bringing visitors from all over the world to enjoy gorgeous scenery, impressive history, and the kaleidoscope of changing seasons. Motorcoach travelers have particularly good views of all the northeast region offers, able to savor their surroundings with total attention. The National Scenic Byways program, which just celebrated its 25th anniversary, adds a fillip of interest to travel in the United States by highlighting routes that are exceptional in ways such as culture, history, or remarkable landscapes. One of the byway program’s special routes is on Mount Desert Island. It’s the Acadia All-American Road, member of a rarefied category—the best of the best. An All-American Road must be great enough to be considered a destination in itself, and this one certainly is—it travels through the unparalleled views that bring millions to Acadia National Park each year.

Motorcoach travelers have particularly good views

Cliff Walk, Newport, Rhode Island Another especially notable piece of the byway program is the Connecticut River Byway, which wends its way through three states: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Forming the border between New Hampshire and Vermont, the Connecticut River has its own special distinction: It is one of just 13 American Heritage Rivers. Popular motorcoach attractions are scattered along the River in each state. In Massachusetts, Yankee Candle’s candle making workshops and array of candles

and kitchenware are just down the road from Old Deerfield, a historic settlement in the River valley. Also in the area are a number of convenient local eateries, including the Deerfield Inn’s colonial dining room. The covered bridges so emblematic of New England cross the river along its length in New Hampshire and Vermont. Beginning close to the Canadian border, the Connecticut River Byway Scenic Drive meanders along the varied river banks for many miles. In New Hampshire, it passes through long-

settled towns like West Chesterfield and Littleton, a good group lunch stop, and historic sites like the Fort at No. 4 and the Littleton Grist Mill. It passes the active covered bridge between Cornish, NH, and Windsor, VT, and leads to the nearby SaintGaudens National Historic Site. In Vermont, the Byway passes through St. Johnsbury with its Planetarium and Athenaeum, following the river to Brattleboro, an arts, crafts, and culinary center accented by the walkable Creamery Covered Bridge. In addition to the Connecticut River Byway, New Hampshire boasts the famed Kancamagus byway, the “Kanc,” and the White Mountain Trail, both in the Mount Washington Valley, and offering a variety of motorcoach draws, including North Conway’s outlets and shops, the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, Franconia Notch State Park with its Old Man of the Mountain Memorial, and Clark’s Trading Post in Lincoln. Overlooks and waterfalls are sprinkled throughout the area, and the adventurous have zip line options in Bartlett at Attitash Mountain Resort and at the Bretton Woods Adventure Center, Carriage Road, Acadia National Park

plus Cannon Mountain’s Aerial Tramway and the Flume Gorge. An additional way to see the Whites is on one of five unique train rides: the Conway Scenic Railroad’s Notch or Valley trains; the Cog mountain climbing railway; the Hobo Railroad’s picnic ride; and the gourmet Café Lafayette Dinner Train. In Maine, the Old Canada Road scenic byway has a storied history. Loggers, native Americans, military expeditions, all traveled from Maine

On the art front, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, largest art gallery east of Montreal, has welcomed its Masterworks home from touring, and installed Salvador Dali’s massive Santiago el Grande in its new pavilion.

The Mount Washington Cog Railway, a National Historic Engineering Landmark, is already planning exciting celebrations for its 150th anniversary in 2019. “When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie,” you’re probably in Connecticut, with its intense pizza history, including the Julia Roberts movie, Mystic Pizza. Statewide, seven pizzerias recently made a national best list, including Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven, founded in 1925 and still making the founder’s pie today under third-generation ownership.

2017 is Canada’s 150th anniversary, but Montreal’s 375th, and projections of images from centuries of history, the magnificent Cité Mémoire, constitutes an immense urban installation, screened from 80 rooftop projectors in Old Montreal and brought to life by an app. More history can be enjoyed via the Fresco Murals Tour in Sherbrooke, one of Quebec’s Eastern Townships, not far from fantastic Lake Memphremagog.

n Vermont An 85-acre “outdoor museum,” Hope Cemetery in Barre, Granite Capital of the World, is filled with masterpieces done by the local granite carvers. Among the traditional gravestones can be found a biplane, a race car, and a huge cube balanced on one corner.
