Crowning a new Showgirl

The 2021 West Moreton and Brisbane Valley Miss Showgirl awards night, hosted by the Marburg Show Society on September 25, was filled with elegance and charm by attendees.

After a series of forced postponements due to COVID, Sarah Rose from the Gatton Show Society was crowned the 2021 West Moreton & Brisbane Valley Showgirl and said she was surprised and delighted to have been crowned Miss Showgirl.

“I think the other girls all looked really lovely and certainly put up a good representation of their communities, so I was feeling quite lucky to get up over them I suppose,” Ms Rose said.

Ms Rose said she was excited to represent the area as an ambassador in the year ahead.

“I plan to try and get around to as many of the shows in West Moreton and the Brisbane Valley over the next year and help out wherever I can,” she said.

Sarah Rose from the Gatton Show Society was crowned 2021 West Moreton & Brisbane Valley Showgirl.

“As West Moreton and Brisbane Valley Showgirl, I’d love to get out and chat to kids and give them ideas to inspire them to try some things they haven’t done before.

“Even just small things like helping out one day at the pavilions or side cattle rings.”

Gallery reopens iconic red doors The red doors of the Open Door Gallery will be open once more to visitors from Sunday.

The Lowood art gallery closed during COVID and did not reopen - until now.

The Lions Club of Lowood Inc., recognised the benefits to the community in reinvigorating the space.

With a fresh revamp, thanks to Lions members and volunteers, the Open Door Gallery will live up to its name when it welcomes the public on Sunday October 10.

Fernvale Artists are excited to have their annual exhibition at the gallery in October, which is open from 9.30am to 2pm on Saturdays and Sunday and 9.30am to 12.30pm on Thursdays.

The Open Door Gallery is a project of the Lowood Lions Club.

As part of the gallery’s new direction, a ‘Friends of the Gallery’ volunteer group is being developed.

The volunteer group will support local artists, volunteer

their time to keep the gallery open, or help develop the garden.

The space is available for hire to small community groups to hold meetings.

To mark Mental Health Week, Lockyer Valley Regional Council is holding a community wellbeing day on Friday at Lake Apex.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council mayor Tanya Milligan said the free community event would be held as part of Mental Health Week celebrations across the region.

“This event is all about providing a range of fun and informative activities that engage our community to build resilience and promote self-care at a local level,” Cr Milligan said.

“Community events like this one give us a chance to reconnect in a positive, supportive environment and learn extra ways to look after our family and friends.”

From 10am – 3pm there will be information

stalls, activities, music, a free sausage sizzle and giveaways, while from 4pm – 6pm, BYO picnic blanket or camp chair, relax on the lawn and enjoy free live music in the park.

The Lockyer Valley Community Wellbeing Day will be hosted by Lockyer Valley Regional Council, in conjunction with Anglicare Southern Queensland, Carer’s QLD, Domestic Violence Action Centre, EACH, Headspace, Kambu, Laidley Community Centre, Laidley Crisis Care and Accommodation Services, Lockyer Community Centre, Lifeline, Lives Lived Well and Neami National.

It is supported by the state’s Localised Mental Health Initiative and the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Local community groups share in most recent grants Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald has passed on his congratulations to the electorate’s latest successful applicants to Round 110 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

“In round 110, clubs and organisations in Lockyer were successful in receiving a combined total of just under $290,000,” Mr McDonald said.

“This money will give a much-needed boost to some of Lockyer’s community groups and sporting clubs and allows them to continue doing the great work they do.”

Mr McDonald was delighted to receive news of the clubs’ success and encouraged any community organisations looking for assistance to apply.

Among the successful applicants were Helidon State School Parents and Citizens Association who received $35,000 to undertake upgrades at the school.

Helidon State School P&C was one of the successful recipients in the recent round of Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants.

The Lowood Golf Club also received $35,000 in order to purchase a new mower.

The GCBF is Queensland’s largest one-off grants program and distributes approximately $60 million a year to communities across

Queensland. It’s a great way for community organisations to get money for projects that might otherwise be out of reach.

Round 112 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund is now open, with applications closing at 11.59pm on October

31, 2021.

Mr McDonald said that he is always happy to provide support for the community and sporting groups that complete the application process and he encouraged nominees to continue applying if they were

unsuccessful in previous rounds.

Lockyer Valley RADF Grants Round open Individuals and community groups interested in arts and culture in the Lockyer Valley are invited to make an application for funding under the Lockyer Valley Regional Council Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).

RADF is a flexible grant fund that invests in local

arts and cultural priorities, as determined by local communities across Queensland.

A RADF funded project must employ artists or art professionals. RADF projects may include, but are not restricted to: l Programs/Projects – that respond to a specific

opportunity or need within the arts sector. Ongoing projects will be considered as a lower priority. l Events – creative festivals or events that offer quality outcomes, provide opportunities for local artists and bring residents together. l Professional Devel-

opment – projects that include opportunities for local artists to develop their skills, experiences and networks.

This may include mentorships, partnerships, workshops and attendance at conferences.

(Funding may be capped if over-subscribed.)

Applications must be submitted online via SmartyGrants by midnight, Monday 25 October 2021.

Too many lives lost on roads Police report we are on track to surpass 300 lives lost on Queensland roads

by Christmas.

By late September, 200 lives had been lost on roads across the state, 14 more than this time last year.

The reality is that these people had family, friends and co-workers whose lives have changed in circumstances that more likely than not, could have been avoided.

Lives lost on our roads this year are on a trajectory to reach their highest number in over a decade. The largest increase has been on roads across Brisbane (+10), the state’s Southern (+6) and North Coast (+6) regions.

Police across the state are committed to reducing road trauma and the devastating effects it has on families and communities.

Factors such as speed, drink and drug driving, not wearing a seatbelts and fatigue are consistent contributors to fatal road crashes.

These factors can be traced back to a decision made by an individual.

It takes you to make the safest decision for you, your passengers and other road users.

Road safety is a shared responsibility and it will take all of us to reduce the impact of lives being lost on our roads.

A WORD FROM GRACE I’d like to take my hat off to Somerset Regional Council for their arts networking supper last week (page 12).

I can see the arts community in the region is only going from strength the strength.

Our coverage area is home to an astounding amount of artistic talent.

Breast cancer has been found to be the most common cancer in Australian women (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer), with one in eight women diagnosed by 85 years of age. October is breast cancer awareness month.

There are a number of risk factors associated with breast cancers, some of which can be modified and some which cannot. While the causes of breast cancer are not fully understood some of the risk factors for developing the disease include, being a woman, increasing age and having a strong family history of breast cancer.

Having a breast condition such as a personal history of breast cancer, ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) or lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) also increases the risk as does a number of hormonal factors, child bearing history and lifestyle.

Finding breast cancer early provides the best chance of surviving the disease. Remember you don’t need to be an expert or use a special technique to check your breasts.

Changes to look for include: • a new lump or lumpiness, especially if it's only in one breast • a change in the size or shape of your breast • a change to the nipple, such as crusting, ulcer, redness or inversion • a nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing • a change in the skin of your breast such as redness or dimpling •

an unusual pain that doesn't go away.

Most changes aren’t due to breast cancer but it’s important to see your doctor without delay if you notice any of these changes.

Pets of Mulgowie strut their stuff The Fourth Annual Mulgowie Markets Pet Parade was held on Saturday October 2.

As a very pet friendly market, regular customers often bring their dogs to the farmers’ markets so the idea for the pet parade was born.

This year, entries were received for 17 pets across seven categories.

While most of the entrants were dogs, there was

one dear little pair of guinea pigs included in the mix.

The Pet Parade was generously sponsored by the Laidley Vet Surgery, a longtime supporter.

The parade also received sponsorships and kind donations from stall holders, Cosy Pet Beds, Julie’s Pet Treats and Holmwood Produce as well as a donation from one of our regular volunteers, Doreen Ferney.

Seniors Month is the time for connection For the first time, the State’s annual Seniors Week will become a month-long celebration of our state’s seniors with $100,000 provided by the Palaszczuk Government to schools, community groups, non-government organisations and local councils to host events and activities.

Minister for Seniors, Disability Services and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Craig Crawford, said a monthlong celebration in October will allow organisations more time to deliver and enjoy events.

“Seniors Month will connect Queenslanders through a series of local activities that bring seniors together with their community,” said COTA Queensland Chief Executive Mark Tucker-Evans.

“If COVID taught us anything, it’s the importance of connecting with others. That social

Nothing woolly for LRPA The curtain will rise on a production 21 months in the making this Friday.

Lockyer Regional Performing Arts (LRPA) will open the English play, The White Sheep of the Family, after a stalled season in 2020.

Director Brian Crichton said the theatre group began rehearsals for the play in January last year.

“We made the tough decision to cancel at the start of the pandemic last year, and we didn’t produce any plays last year,” he said.

“We began rehearsing White Sheep again in July, picking up where we left off over a year later.”

The script is not new territory for Mr Crichton, who played the role of James Winter when LRPA staged the play in 2014.

However, this time around he is acting in the role of the Vicar, in addition to directing and producing the play.

“It is the first time I have taken on a directing role,” he said.

“Being a director for the first time, I’ve discovered I have to think about so many different facets of production.

script required of me was a surprise.

“And taking on board the learning styles of the actors, and how I work with different actors to get to know their parts and their characters has been the most complex part.”

The cast is a mix of actors from across the region, some long term LRPA members and some of whom are stepping into the spotlight for the first time.

“We have several people who have been in plays before,” Mr Crichton said.

“Returning to the stage we have Alyssa Loughman, who played Dorothy when we did Wizard of Oz,” Mr Crichton said.

“Martin Taylor has been in several plays, notably as Sir George Gedney in They Came to a City.

“We have Keryn Loughman coming

back for this production, she was the Sunday school teacher and Aunt Josephine in Anne of Green Gables.

“Matthew McNeish, a long term of actor in our theatre company, who I remember from our Narnia plays.

“Rose Watson has been in many of our productions, and she especially loves musical theatre.

“And we also have Emma Nash, who has also been in many of our

productions.

“Beth Watson returns to the stage, she’s been in many of our productions, and is also taking on the roles of stage and lighting manager.

“And we have a newcomer to the stage, Merryll Houghton, who will play the role of Alice Winter.

“Another new actor is Doc Barlow, who worked backstage in Anne of Green Gables and will now share the role of Janet with Alyssa.”

Mr Crichton said most of the original cast returned after the long hiatus, but sadly two actors had to give up their parts.

“I’d like to say a special tribute to Sheree and Stewart, who were to be taking the roles of Pat and Peter when we started rehearsals back in January 2020,” he said.

“However when COVID struck and we had to cancel, Sheree and Stewart were unable to come back and fill those roles for this year’s production.

Mr Crichton said the three-act play is an English comedy with a subtle sense of humour.

Canola promising Structural changes in the global market are set to bring future growth opportunities for Australia’s canola industry, according to a newly-released industry report. With global and Australia canola prices already breaking records in 2021, the report, by agribusiness banking specialist Rabobank, says Australia’s canola industry has more potential upside ahead with policies to curb emissions in North America and Europe expected to lift global demand for oilseeds, through to 2030. “This will present opportunities for Australian canola exports,” says Rabobank agriculture analyst Dennis Voznesenski.

Truckies to get vaxed

All truck drivers entering Queensland from another state – along with those entering on a freight pass – must be vaccinated with at least one dose under new regulations announced by the Palaszczuk Government last week.

Under the changes, all truck drivers and those using the freight pass must have at least one dose of a COVID vaccine by 15 October and have their second dose (or a booking) by 15 November.

Freight drivers entering Queensland from anywhere will also be required to produce a negative COVID test result at the border from within a seven-day period and maintain a seven-day rolling test regime while operating in the state.

Palaszczuk said regular testing meant were picked up quickly, but due to the nature of their work, freight workers and truck drivers are at greater risk of contracting COVID-19.

“That’s why we’re ramping up our vaccination rollout and making it quicker and easier for truck drivers crossing through the Gold Coast border to get vaccinated,” she said.

“Many drivers are already vaccinated – but for those that aren’t, we want to make it as easy as possible for them to get the jab.”

A dedicated pop-up vaccination clinic was establishedon the NSW/Queensland border in Tugun, operational from September 28, to support the new vaccination rules for truck drivers.

Forest Hill gets CSIRO station The new Forest Hill Agricultural Research Station will be a focal point of cropping research following CSIRO’s purchase of the 77 hectare property as it vacates its currently leased site at the University of Queensland’s Gatton campus.

CSIRO Agriculture and Food Director Dr Michiel van Lookeren Campagne said the property, situated on prime agricultural land, will allow CSIRO to retain a strategically important place to continue cropping research.

“Forest Hill’s location allows us to conduct high-tech field trials and observations for crops throughout the northern cropping zone, which broadly extends from central Queensland

65 years and still going strong

After celebrating his 77th birthday, anyone would forgive Col Litfin for wanting to put the feet up and take things easy, but anyone who knows Col probably agrees that’s simply not an option.

You see, at the same time as celebrating his 77th birthday, Col was

also celebrating 65 years of hard work at the Laidley Saleyards, quite an achievement at any measure.

“I started when I was 12 years old, and actually on my 12th birthday I rode my horse into town to have a look at the saleyard and I’ve been there ever since,” Mr Litfin said.

Col said things have

changed over the years, including the temperament of the cattle.

“There was a lot more handling with your cattle before, now they’re so wild they run scrubbers in and send them straight to the saleyards, so it makes it a bit more interesting,” he said.

Col said the highlights of his long career mostly come

back to the basics.

“I just love buying and selling cattle for local blokes, and I held the record for a pen of 10 cows and calves I bought for a local client which stood for a long time,” he said.

Nowadays Col enjoys bringing the next generation into the saleyards and lending them his years of wisdom and

experience.

“We had a young bloke yesterday who is only 17 and he’s never been in the saleyards before but he’s had a bit to do with cattle so he’s a pretty handy kid,” Col said.

“I enjoy that because I guide him along and look after him a bit.”

As for what’s next, Col said he will just have to play

that one by ear.

“I’m 77 now, so I’m sort of slowing down a little bit but I still love the saleyards and the cattle,” he said.

“I’ve got a lot of support behind me, and I appreciate that because I’ve been here all my life and I’ve been involved in cattle all my life.

“I’m just an old bushy, I suppose.”

Boost to sorghum potential Researchers at The University of Queensland are optimistic the value and versatility of one of the world’s top crops will be improved following the discovery of genes which could increase the grain size of sorghum.

Use of the drought-resilient summer crop has been constrained by the small size of sorghum grains, but Professor David Jordan from the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation said that could be about to change.

“Sorghum is Australia’s third-largest grain crop, providing vital feed to animals, but it is increasingly being used in cereals and other foods for human consumption,” he said.

of years, but it is increasingly valued in Western diets as a low-GI, gluten-free and nutritious grain.

“Larger grains make it more digestible for both people and animals and improves processing efficiency.”

Sorghum is popular among Australian growers, particularly in Queensland and New

South Wales, and the research will help breeders to expand the crop’s potential.

The project began six years ago, involving UQ and the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

QAAFI Research Fellow Dr Yongfu Tao initially mapped the sorghum genome to help identify which genes

were associated with grain size, narrowing the search with existing genetic information for rice and maize.

“New variants have been identified that are capable of doubling grain weight,” Dr Tao said.

“These traits are strongly inherited, with genes accounting for as much as

sorghum.

“We demonstrated that genetic diversity exists in the sorghum gene pool for grain size,” he said.

“Genetic makeup largely determined an individual sorghum plant’s grain size, however environmental conditions also had an effect.

Somerset bursting with colour

Somerset’s colour, charisma and character will be on display at the Colours of Somerset festival on Sunday.

Originally planned for August 22, the event persevered despite the COVID lockdown and the October 10 festival will be even bigger and better.

Planning the event is largely thanks to the work of a group of high school students.

Lowood State High School’s active volunteerism class will receive a certificate II for their work while learning valuable life skills.

Under the guidance of Spirit of the Valleys Events Inc. co-ordinator Idell Wadley, the students formed a committee to bring the event from planning through to execution.

“It’s been a wonderful experience working with Lowood High School,” Mrs Wadley said.

“The students have come up with some really amazing ideas.”

Colourful entertainers, arts and culture will be on for all the enjoy at Colours of Somerset.

Entertainment, markets, food trucks, competitions and workshops throughout the day will give every visitor a taste of Somerset.

“I’m hoping the community really embraces it again,” Mrs Wadley said.

“In the past it’s been really success-

ful with the only downside being bad weather.”

Live entertainment includes the Yugara Dancers, Lockyer Valley School of Highland Dancing, fire twirler Wisper, Taiko Drummers, plus several performances from local high school

students, including the band.

The live performances will culminate in the Stars of Somerset talent quest, where locals are encouraged to show off their greatest skills.

For amateur visual artists, there is an art and a photography competition and

submissions are required by October 9.

The art and photo competition entries will be on display in the high school hall, along with a display from Lowood State School, tea and coffee, and wine tasting.

Entertainment, market stalls and food trucks will be on the school oval with over 35 vendors signed up.

“It’s a really good mix of Somerset and intrastate [vendors],” Mrs Wadley said.

“There’s lots to see and do.

“The Taiko drummers are doing a free workshop, Fernvale artists will be there, painting away and having a lovely time.

“Imbibis will be there doing wine tastings, and so will Springdell Wines.”

Colours of Somerset was made possible through funding from Queensland and Australian Government Resilience and Recovery Funding.

The event received sponsorship from local businesses Kindred Spirits and Lady on the Roof.

Ford Falcon Sells for $1.3mil An award winning and arguably Australia’s best Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III has been auctioned by Lloyds Auctions and has attracted the attention of Ford enthusiasts across Australia.

“This particular GTHO Phase III Falcon is not only award-winning, but it is super

rare coming in the special order colour, 1 of only 12 in Yellow Glo,” said Mr. Lee Hames Chief Operations Officer for Lloyds Auctions. This stunning Phase 3 is in the rare (1 of 12) Yellow Glo special order colours (34 total Phase 3 were produced in special colours), with a distinctive Beige

After almost three weeks of online bidding on the Lloyds Auctions website the bidding reached $1.3million on auction day, a new auction record price for an Australian-made road car.

“We expected this car would break Australian Classic Car records, and we expected it to reach anywhere between 1 and 1.5 million dollars come auction day,” Mr. Hames continued.

“The Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III receives so much attention because it is the pin-

A decade of dominance The Gatton Hawks Reserve Grade squad took home the championship this year after winning the grand final against Wattles 32 – 12, but this is not the first time the side has taken home the silverware in recent years.

Jagan Swan has been a Hawk during their decade of dominance, which he says began in 2013.

“The side had struggled for several years but 2013 was a turnaround moment where we fielded a really strong team that went on to win the final that year,” he said.

From there, the Gatton Hawks Reserves have won the premiership in 13’, 14’ 16’ 17’ 18’ and 2021, with narrow losses in the grand finals of 15’ and 19’ the only blemishes.

That remarkable run has seen the Hawks feature in the last 8 grand finals since 2013 and win an incredible 6 premierships.

When asked what has made the side so successful, Jagan said the support and encouragement from the committee and sponsors has made winning on the field much easier.

“The comradery in the team has always put us in a strong position to dominate,” he said.

“We celebrate with beer and our war cry ‘one tin of coco’ which echoes through the dressing shed.”

At this year’s grand final, Jagan said the crowd brought them home in the second half.

“We won the toss and purposely chose to run home in the second half to the Gatton Hawks designated section of the stadium,” he said.

“We thought it was only fitting that we sang our team song to the crowd after the game, and a large portion sang with us.

“The community have always been supportive throughout the years, and we

have had local businesses show support with good luck banners on game days too.”

Jagan said the toughest time in the last decade was the year off in 2020 due to COVID, which also saw a number of core players retire.

As for the many highlights, Jagan said receiving pre-game speeches from the Gatton Hawks old boys really gets the blood pumping and the spine tingling.
