MOST Australians live huddled on the coast. If not right over the beach, then somewhere within the comparatively narrow strip of green that make up the fringes of the continent.

But these areas are quite small compared to the vast desert regions that form most of the interior. For this reason, the desert areas hold a profound place in the Australian imagination and when travellers finally make a journey to the centre, they seek to make something of it their own; a memento that they can bring back to ‘civilisation’.

This may be a gnarled piece of gidgee branch, a small rusted relic, rocks, crystals or perhaps a vial of red sand. For Daylesford artist Greg Mallyon, his souvenir of a visit trip to the Yuendumu community of the Northern Territory in 2000 was a camp dog. He’s called Dingo and is 16, living out his golden years at Greg’s studio doing nothing much at all.

But all things considered, he is one very lucky hound.

LYONVILLE photographers Katherine Warburton and Michael McDonald’s fathers worked on the railways together. So it seemed fate when they met after Michael crashed Katherine’s 18th party with his dad.

The rest, as they say, is history. Katherine studied photography at university but fell into technical writing after graduation. She then became pregnant after moving to Lyonville and was out of the workforce to raise their children, Toby, four, and Levi, two.

It wasn’t until Michael bought a Canon 6D DSLR last year that the pair really started to explore the medium adopting the name MicKat. Selling their prints at last year’s Trentham Art Show prompted them to pursue photographic art seriously around Michael working full time in the CBD and Katherine raising their kids.

ChillOut, Daylesford/Hepburn/Central Highlands - March 9-13 From humble beginnings, ChillOut has grown to become the biggest and longest-running Country Queer Pride event in regional Australia, and the largest festival in Hepburn Shire. ChillOut retains a relaxed, down-to-earth atmosphere. Don’t miss the parade!

Bullarto Vintage Tractor Pull, Bullarto Reserve - March 12 “That’s a full pull!” is a cry you want to hear at this old-fashioned event under the gum trees at the Bullarto Reserve. There is also a vintage car display, plenty of great food and a jumping castle to keep the kids happy.

TRENTHAM artist David Bryant left Templestowe High School after “a less than glorious matriculation year� and started work in the County Court. After realising that was going to be his life, David put together a folio of his drawings and paintings and successfully applied to the Phillip Institute of Technology (now part of La Trobe University) to do a Fine Art Diploma.

He then swapped to graphic design which led to a rewarding and creative 30-year career running graphic design studio, Art Attack. Over the last few years he has been painting in a studio in Trentham.

David works in watercolour in two distinct styles - figurative, using traditional watercolour techniques and materials to depict local people, landscapes and nature and abstract and organic, painting on nonreceptive surfaces, resulting in a combination of the deliberate and the accidental and creating additional levels of excitement and difficulty.

A WHILE back there was a news story about Australia’s biggest cow. Big Moo lives in South Australia and measures 190cm at the top of the shoulder.

That’s a big beast. So what about in our own region? Is there anything that comes close? Perhaps the leading contender around here could very well be a 12-year-old steer owned by thoroughbred horse trainer Keith Burke at Lauriston. He has kept the steer, which answers to the name of Burpo, in the lap of luxury from the day he was born in September 2004.

Burpo spends his time outside with Keith’s horses, is very well known in the district and often has visitors drop in to give him a pat and get photographs. Burpo takes it all in his stride and certainly has not experienced the life usually set out for farm cattle. In fact, it is more likely he thinks of himself as a horse. He even has a saddle!

AROUND the Central Highlands there are some ultra-efficient folk in hospitality, some friendly, others efficient and some not so much.

Then there’s Ziggy. Running the historic Albert Hotel in Camp St, Daylesford, Ziggy Kelevitz, in another life one of the nation’s greatest wrestlers, chiacks with guests, taking the mickey and at times sounding like Basil from Fawlty Towers. Ziggy retired from the sport at the 1990 Tokyo World Championships, aged 36.

His first big bout was when aged 11, in Adelaide in 1965. Hungarian born, he and his brother were smuggled out as refugees with their parents, their escape owing not a little to the fact that the border guards were drunk. The family was aiming for the USA, but the first battered old boat was heading for Australia, so they boarded it.

From the age of nine wrestling was the sport he conquered: he won 17 national titles and competed all over the world, including the Olympics in Montreal in 1976, Moscow in 1980 and Los Angeles in 1984.

PORCUPINE Ridge artist Sandy Angliss always felt creative and enjoyed making things since she was a young child.

“I can remember the wonderful feeling I experienced when I was about five years old. I would make little cities in my back yard from sticks and mud. I made a shape over my hand with the sticks and covered the sticks with mud.

“Then I made these little dome sculptures harden in the sunshine. I knew I was playing but I also knew I was doing something that was both exciting and serious to me and had a feeling of mystery. I guess I was making an early form of installation, with no audience, so, in that way, I was a self-taught outsider artist.

“I love different media for different reasons. I love painting when I want to feel alone and thoughtful. When I want to satisfy my sensory needs, I turn my hands to ceramics or knitting. I like drawing when I want to understand how something really looks and how it might work.”

A STREAM of 300 trail runners descended on the Goldfields Track in late December with the running of the inaugural GoldRush Trail Run. The event, presented by the Running Company – Ballarat, took runners on 22km and 11km courses starting in Hepburn (22km) and Lake Daylesford (11km) before running south through the Hepburn Regional Park to Sailors Falls Estate Winery.

Winners were awarded authentic relics from the golden age of gold prospecting – rusted pans and picks – to commemorate their achievements.

The concept of the GoldRush Trail Run came after road runner Julian Spence opened a running retail operation in Ballarat and noted that the region lacked a suitable focus for trail runners. Working with trail events and tours operator, Chris Ord from Tour de Trails, and local runners Tash and David Fraser, he set about creating the event.

US TWO: Michael DeVincentis is director and sales agent at Daylesford’s Biggin & Scott. A year ago Tom Shaw turned up looking for work experience. The pair is now working together with Michael taking on a mentoring role.

Michael: Tom was working at Lake House and had taken the initiative to complete the Real Estate Representative Course because he was interested in a career in this industry. He was 100 per cent customer service trained in one of the best businesses in town. I was impressed with his attitude, presentation and manner.

Tom: From buying my first home at the age of 21 I always had an interest in all things real estate. I decided to try something different and challenge myself in a new industry. GREG Pyers grew up in Daylesford. As a boy, he read the books of Gerald Durrell, and many years later, worked at Durrell’s famous Jersey Zoo. Greg became a full-time writer in 1998, following eight years as an educator in zoos, and several years as a post-primary schoolteacher. He went on to write 160 natural history books and three novels for children – winning a raft of awards.

Greg’s latest book is The Unfortunate Victim published by Scribe. It’s the tale of a murder and subsequent trial in Daylesford in the mid-1800s – based on a true story – with detective Otto Berliner on the case.

Greg says his inspiration was “the story of how prejudice, incompetence and ignorance, and the technology of the time, affected the course of justice. While human characteristics are perpetual, what separates us from people of long ago is technology and knowledge.”

A secret you might like!

Hmm. It’s not really a secret because hundreds of people attend but maybe if you’re a visitor you won’t know about it. Some locals are only just hearing about it. And it’s only just happened so you are going to have to wait almost a year for it to come around again. But it’s worth the wait. It’s a day out with unique events that you probably won’t really understand - except to say they are just really good fun - so let’s not take it too seriously. And it’s been going on for more than 150 years - so it has stood the test of time. It also raises loads of money for the community and schools and hospitals and lots of other charities. So you can go along and have a great day out and help the community. That’s a win/win situation. But what is it? Hmm again. Check out page 41 for a clue.

A Tale of Two Lakes is a play with a number of acts. In the first, Lake Daylesford is the scene of weed and willow clearing, path improvements and plans for extended trails embracing gold mining heritage.

In the second, 158 trees are coming down at Jubilee Lake after white ants made them a danger to campers and caravanners.

Back at Lake Daylesford, there is now an embankment in Ruthven Street, tree planting, seats and a better view of the lake. This historic site will be linked by a walk up to the Skate Park and further to the Lookout.

Next up will be the much awaited release of a masterplan for Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens by Andrew Laidlaw, landscape architect at Melbourne’s Botanic Gardens, and ABC radio authority. And as if this were not excitement enough, an opera venue is on the cards after a $60,000 State Government study.

WHY did the chicken, name of Yolko, peck a red bead from a bunch of colours? Because she learnt to.

Teaching a chook to bead-peck, and negotiate little poles, seems eccentric at the least. But for Wheatsheaf dog trainer Tricia Dunlop it’s about understanding pets, especially dogs. Yolko’s gig shows what can be done.

It’s all part of what is formally known as applied behaviour analysis, working out the triggers for animals’ behaviour and the consequences of that behaviour. So, it’s in with positive reinforcement, based on the mantra - no force, no fear, no pain.

Tricia recently returned from a week-long global conference of the Pet Professional Guild in the US, brimming with enthusiasm for what is called a science-based, force-free way of having animals.

GIVEN the range of scenery, wildlife and more in the Central Highlands, who would hold a photography workshop 17,000km away in a place once thought to be the end of the world?

The answer from the distinguished Daylesford photographer and teacher Robert Marnika lies partly in the utterly astounding landscape on an island deep in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa and its drive to be self-sufficient using only renewable energy.

The island is El Hierro, the smallest of seven Canary Islands, but dramatic with a rugged coastline of great black volcanic cliffs, moonscapes and ancient forests. Coatings of lava fringing exuberant forests, sea cliffs and plant life earn it UNESCO World Biosphere standing, designated to promote biodiversity and sustainable use.

Its wind-twisted juniper trees grow in just three places worldwide and to Robert it is a miniature continent to which he and his partner Simonetta Togliani are continually drawn.

ROBIN Marks never took the train to Melbourne, despite living just 14km from Kyneton. When he did decide to try the rail trip he noticed a fellow passenger with a cancer spot on his cheek and, as a skin specialist, gently warned him.

As a result, 69-year-old Allen Lette shot off to his specialist and had a Stage 1 melanoma removed. For Dr Marks this was just another caution after a 40-year career at Melbourne University, travelling the world, and 24 years as a dermatologist in Kyneton.

A burst of publicity followed after Allen wrote to the Herald Sun wanting to find Dr Marks to thank him for a possibly lifesaving act.

And in one of many quirks to this story Allen was keen to thank the doctor with a fine red wine, unaware that he has 60 vines under cultivation.

To Allen, who lives in Richmond, this is a Sliding Doors scenario, for he believes that if he had been on the other side of four seats his 2-3cm brown spot on his left cheek would not have been spotted. And Robin Marks agrees.

Every Friday at The Grande Hotel in Hepburn Springs there’s a musical event on offer. From cabaret to burlesque, from tribute shows to amazing tunes, there is something for everyone.

Jazz and affiliated music genres are on offer every Friday and Saturday night at Horvat’s Supper Club in Daylesford.
