MUSEUM MUSINGS: Horribly Healthy! We come across some weird and wonderful adverts in the newspapers we hold in the collection. Mike, one of our volunteers, has been taking a closer look and has created a new display that brings to light some of the ailments that were troubling people in the late 1800s. The Victorians are often thought of as a stuffy, prudish sort but seemingly the makers of medicines felt the need to go into quite some detail about how their potions and concoctions could help. If we go by the adverts, it seems stomach complaints were quite an issue for local people – there are remedies for wind, bloating, stomach cramps and diarrhoea!

like wonderful cures for everything. The first was for preventing dandruff and the second for everything from scurvy to chapped lips. The photo shows T. Webb’s Chemist that was on Royston High Street around 1900. The window is full of bottles and you can imagine all the different coloured glass with an amazing variety of labels promoting the liquids contained within. I wonder what those in the future will think of today’s medicinal adverts – perhaps we’re just as graphic, if not more so in our adverts for ailments?

We have one advert for Bull’s Compound Wine of Quinine from 1871 that claims to “produce cheerfulness and health”! The names of the lotions and potions are always interesting too – Dr Startin’s Nutritive Pomade or Matthew’s Golden Cerate sound

We will be having a bottle and and box tombola stall at the May Fayre on Monday 7th May, so please come and say hi to us.
