Dave’s top tips Water hammer , the cure!

Last months top tip was about the cause of water hammer, this month we look at ways to prevent it. There are several ways to ease this problem, "professional" ways and DIY ways, none are difficult, but the first thing to make sure of is that wherever a pipe is up against a joist, rafter or other surface that it is securely fixed. The first and most effective professional way is to install an equilibrium valve instead of the standard valve in your tank or cistern. This valve works by allowing some water to get at the back of the piston washer to stop the arm jumping about. The noise reduction valve above it is a further alternative, this allows incoming water to disperse below the water line and reduces the "waves", it slows the vibration down but most often will not stop it. The DIY way is very effective but slightly cumbersome. Take an ordinary yoghurt carton and attach it to your float arm with some stainless steel wire, which will not rust. Suspend the carton just below the water line. When full of water it has enough weight to stop the vibration, but not too much to stop the arm lifting gently. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills

Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HYPNOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING.

******************************************************* This month it is about relationships. This month's question comes from an anonymous gentleman who lives near here.. "Dear Rachael, I have been married for almost 30 years. My wife has a difficult menopause, and we now sleep in separate rooms. I consider myself to be a compassionate husband and have done my best to help her through this, but her bad temper and moods are killing any feelings I have for her. I guess I must still love her in a way,but maybe it's through habit, but I am so fed up with being her verbal and sometimes physical punch-bag and not having any intimate contact now. A female colleague has started being flirtatious with me and I am so tempted to follow this through. Am I so wrong to expect some attention and love, now that it's gone in my marriage before I get too old?" For want of a name I shall call you Fred. What a sad and difficult situation for you, Fred, and so totally unfair when you have tried to help her through this hormonal minefield. You are not alone, of course, and I do sympathise, so what can be done? First of all would she be open to seeing a doctor to discuss where she actually is in her menopause? Is she on HRT? There are also many herbal medications if she doesn't want to take hormone replacements, and she could always speak to an advisor at somewhere like Holland and Barrett, as they can be very helpful. As for your question about your female colleague, I admire you for asking my opinion and not just going straight ahead. I'm sure you have thought this through, but here are a few reasons why you need to stand back from that situation. You don't say whether you have children, but if so, how will it affect them once the secret is out because believe me, it doesn't normally stay a secret for long? Is the colleague to be trusted, would it break up her marriage, how would your wife react, if she is difficult now? Financially how would it affect you and your wife in a breakup? Would it be more feasible for you both to have a course of counselling with me? I think if she won't even considerate it, you have every right in explaining how difficult life is for you and that if she won't get help then you should both consider separating. My number is below, and you can ring me for a confidential chat. ***************************************************************

Hucclecote Scout News

May Day camp looks to be a great camp with 38 in camp at a local farm. Apart from cooking in patrols (groups of 7) on open fires a full programme of activities are planned. These range from an incident trail through the woods following compass direction from one project to the next, treasure hunt, to football, rounders and other games. Each evening ends with a camp fire run by the Scouts themselves. We hope it will be dry for the St Georges Day parade when all the Beaver, Cubs and Scouts walk from the Spa to the Cathedral for a short service. On Saturday 17th May the Scouts wil be building a Pioneer Bridge at the Guides and Brownie event at Dinglewell school as we have for the last few years. Hope we see many of you to have a free go at crossing the bridge. Summer camp in Yorkshire is the next main event with visit to the Natinal Coal mine Jorvic (tour under York and a short hike over Ilkley Moor). On site swimming pool means swimming every day plus the usual Scouting activities. Father and Sons / Daughters camp, details will be out next month for the 37th camp at Cranham dates are 19th to 21st September. We have just had 6 Cubs come up, which takes our numbers up to 45 boys and girls, we are please that Scouting is going so well at Hucclecote. There is scouting in nearly every country in the world, next year is the Jamboree is being held in Japan when Scouts from around the world will camp together. Our thanks for Mears and Gloucester Housing Assoc for doing work to our Scout HQ in return for the use of the facilities at the HQ.. Please phone Terry on 521664 if you have children interested in joining the group.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society Our AGM has taken place, and I am delighted to say that we have a new chairman – Joy Howard. I am sure that she will be an excellent chair, and we all wish her well in the coming year. The current committee are continuing, so we have continuity as well as new blood. Our AGM was accompanied by a talk about bringing your garden up to scratch for entry in the National Gardens Scheme. Mine won’t be making it any time soon I am afraid. Our normal venue will be given over to the local and EU elections in May so that we cannot use it. Instead we are going to the gardens at Highnam Court, where we will enjoy a guided tour – all being well to include ‘some of the parts that the other visitors cannot reach’. This will be followed by what I am assured are some of the best home-made cakes in the county. Thursday 26th June will be one of the highlights of this year when we will be entertained again by Chris Evans from Dundry Nurseries. Chris has been honoured recently for all his hard work setting up and running the Butterfly Garden [which helps mainly younger people with disabilities ‘get their hands dirty’] at the nurseries, and we are looking forward to hearing more of his amusing anecdotes about both the nurseries and the garden. My potatoes are in but not yet showing as I write this. Correction – those potatoes that I missed when I dug up last year’s crop are coming through, but none of this year’s. More reports in due course. Why not join us one evening and find out more about us. Garden, allotment, patio pots, indoor plants and the plants other people grow – we cover them all over the year. As a guest this year you will be asked for a contribution of just £2 – well worth it to hear Chris Evans! All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a To advertise call 01452 7.30 start. All welcome, no need to be an expert. More 890242 information from Chris on 610694.

‘When is the right time?

29

As a parent I seem to spend a lot of time encouraging my children to do some basic tasks around the house. The simple question ‘have you tidied your bedroom?’ often evokes the response ‘I’ll do it later!’ Yet it seems strange to me that later never seems to arrive. I sometimes wonder if it would be easier to tidy the bedroom myself! Perhaps you have the experience of seeing a situation that needs urgent change and yet nobody seems to respond. Have you ever been sat on a plane when the tannoy announcement requests a doctor or nurse, a person stranded with a broken down car or an ethical dilemma on the world stage that you wish you could solve. In the Bible, Jesus tells a story of the Good Samaritan. Loaded with religious and political significance the story focusses on the Samaritan who goes the extra mile. In your family, in your community or in the wider world itself – what can you do to make a difference

Revd Andrew Axon, St Philip and St James Church, Larkhay Road.’

Hucclecote Townswomen Guild After a short AGM at our March meeting and with a full Committee for the coming year, we settled down to listen to our speaker Ms Lorraine Parsloe, and looked forward to an entertaining talk entitled ‘Only Fools and Corsets –the Trials of a TV Extra ‘ ! Lorraine told us how she started her career, and then went on to tell us of her experiences on various well known T V programmes, it was surprising to hear that if an ‘extra’ had to speak as part of her role then immediately she went on to a higher pay scale, so mostly the parts were appearances only !The most frequent rolls for lady extras were playing , nurses, policewomen, ladies maids in period dramas, and peasants the latter being the favourite as it meant very little time in ‘make up and wardrobe’ beforehand –the least favourite being the ladies maid, because of the tight corsets!! We did think that even with the corsets there would be some advantages to this role especially when Lorraine told us that she had been Mrs Bennet’s maid in the definitive TV production of “Pride and Prejudice”, but unfortunately she wasn’t ‘on set’ for Mr Darcy’s (Colin Firth’s) famous wet shirt scene –so certainly not that day!! Lorraine has now added ‘voice over’ roles for children’s programmes to her repertoire as this involves less travelling and is easier due to family commitments . A most enlightening and interesting talk I’m sure we all look at the extras differently now, such a vital role in making the programmes as realistic as possible. Hucclecote TG’s April meeting will be on Thursday 15th April at 7-30pm, at Hucclecote Community centre, and will be entitled “The Mitford Sisters” by Ms Di Alexander - all members and visitors are very welcome!!
