n Tourism on the rise
n Kenya Special School Chris David of Niños Del Tercer Mundo is delighted to announce that the foundations and a substantial number of walls are already going up to make the new dormitories at the Pangani Special School. This also means employment for a large number of local workers, for whom any kind of work is hard to find. NTM have already been able to send €15,000€ for this project, of which two thirds has been donated by The Lawson Foundation. We will follow the progress of the building in further issues of the Gazette.
n Grape glut Lanzarote airport received 200,000 foreign visitors in July, an increase of almost 3 per cent on the same month last year.
Don´t forget the Sunset Cruise in aid of NTM on September 12th! The Princesa Ico boards at 6.30pm and sails at 7pm returning at 9pm. There will be live music during the two hour cruise. The figures reflect a general rise throughout the Canaries, with only Tenerife showing lower figures than it did last year. Much of the increased traffic is due to new routes by budget operators.
The year´s excellent grape harvest has led to a drop in prices for farmers and worries that large quantities of grapes will be left to spoil. The island’s bodegas do not have the space to store this year´s harvest, which has exceeded last year´s total of 2.7 million kilograms of fruit, and many farmers have reported leaving grapes to wither on the vine. The glut has also led to a fall in prices of 10 cents per kilo, which will adversely affect many producers. They have called for storage facilities to be extended.
María Teresa Lorenzo, the new Canarian Tourist Minister, said the results showed that “Canarian tourism remains on the right track.”
