CRICKET CRICKET CRICKET

Striking out for the title As Lanzarote’s cricket season heats up to an exciting climax, Roberto Shard reports on recent games.

T

he Naturally Floors Sponsored league reached its mid-way point on Matchday Seven, when St Georges CC played Lanzarote CC. Winning the toss and fielding first, Lanzarote had St Georges in early trouble - both openers falling cheaply to fine bowling. However, a valuable 70run third-wicket partnership between A. and N. French and a spirited 30 from M. Dynes helped St Georges post 161 all out. Pick of the bowlers was Monish who finished with 5 for 21. Chasing 162, Lanzarote were under the pump from the first over and were soon

3 wickets down. An admirable 30 from Opi offered brief resistance but G. Dean stole the show for St Georges returning remarkable bowling figures of 6 for 23 as Lanzarote were bowled out for exactly 100. St Georges won by 61 runs. Matchday Eight saw St Georges CC play PDC Cobras. Once again being asked to bat first, St Georges were quite simply outplayed and blown away. Some excellent line and length bowling, combined with energetic ground fielding saw St Georges all out for 102. Each and every one of Cobras bowlers contributed, with M. Evans 2 for 11 off 6 overs and M. Herbert with 2 for 9 most noteworthy.

S

Chasing a modest total, PDC Cobras’ victory never looked in doubt. Measured and controlled batting from M. Evans, who fell for 35 just before the end, and Sachin, who finished 46 not out, saw Cobras win by an emphatic 8 wickets. Matchday Nine saw a fantastic, high scoring game between Lanzarote CC and Wolves CC. With St Georges’ loss the previous week, Wolves now had an outside chance of the league title and batted first with real purpose and intent. An aggressive secondwicket partnership between C. Cook (45) and S. Chhina (64) was bettered by a magnificent 100 not out from R. Singh. Wolves posted 265 for 5. Chasing a big score, Lanzarote

made a great effort in their run chase. After a promising start and with dangerman Monish at the crease on 108 not out, ably supported again by the resilient Opi, an excellent spell of bowling by A. Bruintjies, who finished with 3 for 24, helped turn the tide back in favour of Wolves, having Monish caught superbly by D. Leibrandt. Unfortunately for Lanzarote the tail didn’t wag and some fine bowling from R. Singh with 3 for 46 and P. Stenson with 3 for 50 reduced Lanzarote to 232 all out. A great effort from both teams and a hugely enjoyable game. Next month we will report on an exciting end to the season and see if Wolves CC can indeed pip St Georges CC to the league title.
