do a test run Here’s the deal: Your bridesmaids don’t want to steal the show, but they do want to look their best. They’ll be standing in front of a room full of friends and family too. When choosing a style, don’t ask your friends to wear something you wouldn’t yourself. The best way to prove you respect their feelings is by trying on the bridesmaid dress. Does the fit make you feel selfconscious? Is the fabric itchy? If you answer yes, move on. When you find one you’d love to wear yourself, you’ll have no problem convincing your friends to get on board.

select the right shade There are several foolproof ways to pick the perfect color. One of the easiest methods is to play off of the color schemes of the venue and the season. For instance, if your wedding will be held at a rustic vineyard with burgundy décor, you’ll probably want to rule out bright yellow dresses. Rich colors—oxblood and teal—work well in the fall and winter months, while lighter shades—lavender and blush—are perfect for spring and summer. If you’re still at a loss, go for a classic color, like blue, and let your bridesmaids pick their favorite shades from light to dark for a trendy, mismatched effect. Want to push the envelope even further? Consider printed or heavily embellished gowns (floral-print and sequined bridesmaid dresses are hot right now). Just remember: Patterns and metallics work best in smaller wedding parties and should be paired with simple accessories. Or you could flout tradition and opt for an all-white bridal party, à la Kate Middleton or Solange Knowles, for an unexpected look that’s crisp and chic.

start strong

If you’re taking the whole gang bridesmaid dress shopping, begin the day with a leisurely brunch to make sure your girls are feeling relaxed.

find complementary colors Think about choosing a hue that goes well with a variety of skin tones. Stonewashed colors, like blush and gray, are universally flattering and right on trend. Jewel tones (amethyst, emerald and sapphire) complement fairer complexions, while brighter, bolder hues, like cobalt blue and hot pink, pop against darker skin. Want an edgier feel? Try universally flattering metallics, like champagne or rose gold. If you’re opting for a standout print, make sure the dominant colors work with your entire bridal party. Or, alternatively, deck out just your maid of honor in a printed dress and keep the rest of your girls in solid colors.

consider lingerie logistics Remind your girls to get the right undergarments. Depending on the style of dress (think: strapless, one shoulder or thin straps), your bustier bridesmaids may need some extra support. Trust us— even the most amazing dress can look unflattering with the wrong bra. In addition to a new bra, each bridesmaid might also need a specific panty or body shaper.

don’t dictate the footwear Insisting bridesmaids purchase a particular pair of shoes may feel like the perfect finishing touch to you, but it also creates another expense. And, like the dress, it’s unlikely they’ll want to wear the shoes again, especially if they’ve been dyed a specific color. Most of your friends probably already have a pair of black or metallic heels they’d be thrilled to reuse. Another bonus: Sporting a pair of their own comfortable shoes means blister-free dancing.

By letting each bridesmaid select her own jewelry, you’re encouraging her to express her personality (that’s the reason you chose her in the first place, right?). Plus, the right jewelry will make any bridesmaid feel more like herself.
