Sudurnes Science and Learning Center Welcomes You
The Sudurnes Science and Learning Center is a scientific research facility in the Sudurnes region. It is made up of The Southwest Iceland Nature Institute and The University of Iceland´s Research Center in Sudurnes, among others, and offers first class research facilities in marine biology and ornithology. It also houses two interesting exhibitions geared towards the whole family.
The Nature Gallery Over seventy stuffed animals, a collection of plants, shells, and more can be viewed in the nature gallery of the Center, with the only stuffed walrus in Iceland as one of the exhibits. A close-up view of living marine animals in tanks can be enjoyed - the brave can even touch some of them! It is ideal to combine a trip to the Center with a walk to the seafront or nearby ponds, where guests collect organisms which then can be studied in the Center´s microscopes. The Center provides all the necessary equipment.
The Attraction of the Poles A fascinating exhibition, The Attraction of the Poles, tells the story of the French physician, scientist and Polar explorer, Jean-Baptiste Charcot. His research ship, Pourquoi-pas?, perished along with all, but one of her crew, off the Icelandic coast in 1936. An exquisite model of the ship is one of the exhibition´s many artifacts.

The Southwest Iceland Research Institute and The University of Iceland´s Research Center in Sudurnes conduct interesting scientific research which can be featured in a visit to the Center, along with touring the research facilities and the exhibitions.
