Beclouded

33.1×24.4 in Printed on Epson printer, 2012

This piece explores the idea that in some way, the positive reputation of the mountain, Mt. Holyoke, beclouds the city that inherited its name. The distortions in the top half of the piece soften the solidity of the mountain in attempt to emphasize the reflection. Multiple text layers convey the phrase, “What comes first, the mountain or Holyoke.”

Text from Holes by Louis Sachar 23.4 Ă—16.5 in

Printed on Epson printer, 2012

The text in this work is a lullaby by Louis Sachar from his children’s book, Holes. During my process I experimented with different fonts to express meaning behind words and phrases in the text.

First Artist’s Book 2012

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

Text by Maya Angelou 36×4 in Printed on Epson printer

This artist’s book project explores some of the themes conveyed in Maya Angelou’s famous poem, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. The book does not aim at explaining or fully expressing all the themes and ideas within the poem; instead it is meant to hint at the underlying imagery more broadly.

Final Artist’s Book 2012

Identity in Data

90Ă—5.5 in Original portraits: oil on canvas paper, 2012 Printed on Epson printer

This Artist’s book was inspired by file encoding, a topic I learned this semester in a computer science class. This project explores the idea that in today’s age of technology, part of a human being’s identity is encoded in data on various social media websites. In this piece I used scanned images of seven portraits I painted using oil paint on canvas paper. Images were manipulated using illustrator.
