A community conversation VMC ALEX KATS On a cold June evening, the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) held ‘a Community Conversation’ in Dandenong.

The purpose was to shape the VMC’s priorities, and to share views about what issues are important in the south eastern region.

The evening brought together nearly 60 people from the south eastern suburbs, representing more than 30 different ethnic, religious, cultural and linguistic communities. Among them were three people who represented the Jewish community, though in very different ways.

In October 2017, the VMC announced its new Commissioners. Following in a tradition of Jewish Commissioners including Marcia Pinskier and Graeme Leonard, one of the new Commissioners is Walter Rapoport, an economist and finance company director, who has had many years of involvement with Bnai Brith, the Council of Christians and Jews, and Holocaust education. At the VMC, apart from being a new Commissioner, he is also the chair of activities in the south east region, and thus acted as chair on the night.

For a number of years, the VMC has tried to canvas the opinions of the various communities that it represents.

they can, but there are only a dozen of them in a state that is considered to be one of the most diverse in the country and across the world, with many religious groups and more than 200 languages spoken at home. So in order to advise the Commission and therefore the government, in 2012, the VMC set up eight Regional Advisory Councils (RACs) across the state that each meets three times a year and informs the Commission about the issues and challenges that are impacting multicultural communities

in their region. Each RAC has 20-25 members, appointed by the VMC, and together the members from the eight Victorian RACs come from 53 different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

The Southern Metropolitan Regional Advisory Council, chaired by Walter Rapoport, has two other members who represent the Jewish community.

Though most RAC members represent a community or were chosen as individuals, some were chosen specifically as representatives of organisations, and one

of those is Stephen Thomas, the General Manager for Innovation & Quality at Jewish Care. Though not Jewish himself, Stephen has been at Jewish Care since 2013 and is passionate about community relations, aged care and ethnic diversity.

He brings knowledge from an organisation deeply committed to those values, as well as a genuine care for dialogue and intercultural understanding.

The Jewish community representative on the Southern Metropolitan RAC is Alex Kats, a long-standing volunteer with many communal organisations, including Limmud, Stand Up, Jewish Care and others. Alex also regularly attends events hosted by the JCCV and many other community organisations, and is currently a board member of the Council of Christians and Jews, as well as Impact (for Women), organisations from which he can draw valuable community experience.

Each of the members of the RAC, as well as the participants in the Community Conversations had stories to tell of their experiences in multicultural Australia.

Some were positive, others highlighted some of the challenges, but each person told their story with honesty, integrity and a genuine desire to see a community where we can all be respected for our views, our points of view and our ways of life.

Exciting new displays at the Australian National Aviation Museum AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL AVIATION MUSEUM In the Melbourne suburb of Moorabbin children can take the captains seat of a Boeing jetliner, sit in the cockpit of a supersonic jet fighter or get the feel of a helicopter joystick all while staying safely on the ground thanks to exciting new displays at the Australian National Aviation Museum.

The museum which is family friendly allows visitors up close and personal with many of their exhibits with over eight aircraft open to sit in or take the pilots seat, the aircraft range from a cold war Canberra bomber which has recently joined the exhibits, through to a modern 737 airliner.

The museum has recently acquired a Bell Kiowa helicopter from the Australian Army and children can now get feel of a modern helicopter while mum and dad become passengers in the back While many museums keep patrons behind barriers visitors to Moorabbin are allowed to touch many of the displays and get a feel for what makes aviation so magical Museum chairman Ashley Briggs said : “We welcome families to explore the aircraft in our collection to touch and experince a range of cockpits and aircraft” “ we recently added two new picnic areas so people can enjoy their picnic lunch in comfort or even sit on the grass under the wing of a plane” he said

Jenna and Indi. both aged 11 explore an airliner cockpit A team of enthusiastic volunteers are always around working on aircraft restoring new exhibits and visitors are able to watch the work being undertaken or have a chat to the tour guides and see what makes the museum tick, the most popular exhibit is a jet airliner static simulator which allows visitors both young and old to soar over Melbourne and simulates a Tullamarine take off while emergency alarms sound and lights flash and then return for a safe landing.

The museum which has been running since 1962 has over 30 aircraft and engines on display the collection includes aircraft from the former Melbourne based Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation and Government Aircraft Factory, with the jewel in the crown being a World War 2 Beaufighter built in 1945 at Fishermens Bend Melbourne The collection includes such features as a supersonic Mirage jet fighter the Red Barons World war 1 fuel tank from his Fokker triplane and a

Korean War era Fairey Firefly with folding wings for use on a naval aircraft carrier .

Michael Danby shares his thoughts MICHAEL DANBY MHR MELBOURNE PORTS My love of the Australian Jewish community emerges from having a similar background to many families in the community who endured the Holocaust…writes Michael Danby.

I think my obituary for the much-loved Rabbi of the holocaust survivors, Rabbi Chaim Gutnick (of blessed memory), reflects that https://bit.ly/2MQ4xSC. Even before the murder of the Jewish school children by a Jihadist at the Jewish school in Toulouse, I insisted that the Australian government see Jewish Students all over the country were protected. Security funding to fortify Jewish schools all over Australia has seen that every parent and grandparent can be assured that all our children can freely attend to their education in the best safety the Australian government can provide.

Before I was elected to Parliament in 1998, there hadn’t been a single MP visit Israel for more than a decade. Thanks to the support of philanthropists Sol Lew and David Goldberger, I took the first mission of Australian Labor MPs to Jerusalem (led by the then opposition leader Simon Crean). Since then, the atmosphere has totally improved in Parliament, with many Members and Senators having visited Israel, the Australia-Israel Parliamentary

Michael Danby and his beloved St Kilda Friendship Group having one of the largest memberships in Parliament, we having regular speakers and functions thanks to the ECAJ, AIJAC and the Israeli Embassy.

Words cannot speak highly enough of my regard for our long-standing Labor stalwart Senator Glenn Sterle. He works with love and passion to continue my work with the Australia-Israel Parliamentary Friendship Group. The same applies to my dear Liberal friend, the chairman of the Australia-Israel Parliamentary Friendship Group and the chairman of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (which I used to chair), Senator David Fawcett.

Israel visits have generally benefitted Australian national security. The visits to Israel have had an important transformative effect on our national politics. You don’t have to explain to MPs and Senators Iran, Jihadism, counter terrorism, the extremism of Erdogan, of Hezbollah and Hamas’ role as terrorist organisations and threat, once parliamentarians have visited there.

From an Australian Jewish viewpoint, perhaps my most difficult days in Canberra were with Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, when he expelled the Mossad station chief in Canberra after the head of the Mossad Meir Dagan used Australian passports for the targeted assassination of the Hamas quartermaster,Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh, in Dubai. My office received a torrent of antiJewish hatred when I dissented from Rudd’s decision, explaining that the Israelis were clearly wrong to have used such passports, Dagan having given Australian security an undertaking that they wouldn’t be misused.

I thought however that removing Israeli security would disadvantage Australia, my views have been subsequently vindicated with analysis showing that apparently 90% of the exchange of information benefited Australia. Now security relations are restored, for instance Jerusalem did the right thing in alerting Australia to the plot to blow-up an Etihad flight from Sydney.

Finally, I’d say my years long campaign to try to get the Australian government, especially Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, to condemn Iranian ballistic missile testing has not been successful. This is despite a Senate Select Committee recommending that the Australian government should speak out against this dangerous Iranian aggression. Even those who don’t agree with President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), such as European Presidents and Prime Ministers Macron, Merkel and May, have condemned the Iranian rocket firings. Julie Bishop won’t speak to me because I have refused

to shut up about this. She and the Jewish community can be assured I will never shut up about this rotten deal which has only enhanced the power of the mullahs in Tehran, and I will continue to demand that she and Malcolm Turnbull do something about it My career has paralleled this quote from Edward Kennedy: “The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die” I wanted to advise you that I am retiring from Federal politics, effective as of the end of the current parliamentary term. After 20 years as the Member for Melbourne Ports, it is time for the next chapter in my life.

This is wholly my choice. I would have been pre-selected for the next election had I chosen to remain. Notwithstanding the seat is marginal, I also believe I could have won the seat for an eighth term.

It has been a privilege to serve the Melbourne Ports community for such a length of time.

Food Made With Love: Souper Kitchen Opens Its Doors in Melbourne SUBBOTNIK / SOUPER KITCHEN SARAH BENDETSKY On 8 July, a new community soup kitchen called Souper has opened its doors in the heart of St Kilda. Volunteers of all ages and from all over Melbourne gathered at St Kilda Shule to peel tons of veggies and cook amazing food including hearty chicken soup, mains and dessert.

Run in partnership between Subbotnik, a non-profit organisation serving the needs of the Russian-speaking Jewish community, Visit and Care Bikkur Cholim and St Kilda Shule, the kitchen aims to help people in need with the delivery of nutritional, homestyle meals.

“Our focus is on people affected by illness, lonely individuals, seniors and community members in difficult financial situations,” Alona Krapivin, the Souper Kitchen’s CoFounder, said, “Even if we can’t help solve all the problems at once, still, a yummy kosher meal made with love at the right time is a great start.”

During the cook-off, over 300 portions of soup, mains, side dishes and cakes were made, while the first deliveries took place later that afternoon. The rest of the food was frozen and since then has been distributed by volunteers throughout Melbourne on a daily basis.

“As soon as we got home after the cookoff, I got a phone call from a lady who just received our package,” Sarah Bendetsky, the Souper Co-Founder said, “She was very emotional and shared that her husband, a cancer patient unable to digest a meal without terrible pains in the last 3,5 months, finally ate and fell much better.”

It was the recent passing of my grandfather, Lev Vaynshenker, a man of true valour, kindness and honesty who devoted his life to helping those around him, that inspired me to help launch the Souper Kitchen.

During my time at the kitchen, I saw people giving endlessly and wholeheartedly to help people in times of need. This encapsulates what my grandfather was all about. Making my first delivery the following day, seeing the happiness and joy created when receiving a freshly cooked meal, I felt my grandfather’s memory live on.”

Mitzvah Day Australia MITZVAH DAY AUSTRALIA On the third Sunday in November, Jews globally participate in a range of hands on projects supporting charities and local initiatives to build stronger communities. Mitzvah Day is a grass roots international Jewish led day of social action.

In 2017, 40,000 people from diverse groups and communities, across 30 countries participated. There were 60 projects Australia wide. For inspiration, consider organizing a collect-a-thon, cook-a-thon, park and beach clean-up, visit the sick and elderly, toy and book drive or join an existing activity such as a picnic for those in need, making floral bouquets for aged care residents and crafts as gifts. There is a project for all demographics, affiliation, ability and interest. Projects are limited only by your imagination.

2018 will see collaboration amongst organisations and generosity in offering venues for activities.

Smiles and laughter fill the air on Mitzvah Day, as well as a sense of pride and satisfaction in all that we can achieve together.

Mitzvah Day has become an integral part of the annual calendar planning for many of our youth groups, schools, synagogues, scout and sporting clubs and communal organisations.

Isaac Herzog: Australia’s Contribution and ‘Unity of Forces’ LABOR CANDIDATE FOR CAULFIELD SORINA GRASSO On the evening of the 4th of July, a packed Beth Weizmann Community Centre was host to outgoing Israeli Leader of the Opposition and new Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), Isaac Herzog at an event hosted jointly by the Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council, Zionism Victoria, The Zionist Federation of Australia, the Jewish Community Council of Victoria and the Executive Council of Australian Jewry.

Following an introduction by Israel’s Ambassador to Australia, Mark Sofer who described Yitzhak Herzog as belonging to Israel’s nearest thing to a Royal family, Herzog said his reception by the Australian political echelon had been outstanding.

He spoke about his excellent relationship with the leadership of the Australian Labor Party, including Bill Shorten and the meetings he had with Penny Wong, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Richard Marles, Shadow Minister for Defence and leaders of major Trade Unions.

“I am always impressed that on both sides of the political isle, Israel is so appreciated” said Mr Herzog in reference to his visits to Australia and the bipartisan support for Israel he encounters here.

Sorina Grasso, Labor Candidate for Caulfield, Isaac Herzog, Martin Foley, Minister for Housing, Ageing & Disability; Minister for Mental Health; Minister for Creative Industries; Minister for Equality, Colin Rubenstein, Executive Director, AIJAC and Mary Delahunty, Councillor and Former Mayor Glen Eira Council “Australia’s contribution to the Zionist enterprise from 1917 onwards has been extraordinary” he said and talked at length about Doc Evatt, the Australian Labor Party Leader of the Opposition, who as President of the UN General Assembly in 1948 was the architect of a tremendous contribution made by Australia to the

resolution which brought the State of Israel into being.

Turning to Israel in modern times, Mr Herzog stressed the importance of unity, saying “We should strive for peace and maintain our security” and “we have to work to unite our people”. He talked about the changing nature of Israeli

society and in relation to Diaspora Jews he asked rhetorically “How do we prevent divisiveness and maintain the centrality of Israel and love of Israel for Jews in the diaspora.”

He then went on to say that founded as it was on socialist ideals, Israel remains a progressive nation on many counts, pointing out that the people of Israel voted democratically for Benjamin Netanyahu and the fact that an Israeli Prime Minister went to gaol is a credit to Israeli democracy and uncompromising legal system. He also stressed that fighting terror legally was not a violation of human rights. “Israel was founded on the basis of socialism, equality and redistribution of wealth” said Mr Herzog and that “we have to fight terror, preserve security and extend our hand for peace.”

“Although I am leaving the Knesset, as Head of the Jewish Agency, I’ll be helping and assisting and uniting Jewish people as much as I can” said Mr Herzog and that “Political change can come from unity of forces”.

In fact, when I introduced myself in Hebrew to Isaac Herzog and told him I was Jewish and lived in Israel as a child, it was like talking to a friend. He immediately broke into Hebrew himself as did the people with him, and for me that was very special.

A Tale of Breath and Courage CAULFIELD SHUL

BY RABBI RALPH GENENDE OAM It’s been said that we need to constantly focus on creating a better planet for our children and better children for our planet.

The dramatic events and rescue of the twelve Thai boys and their coach caught the attention of the world. This was in part because it was a story about vulnerable children, our instinctive need to protect them and our deepest yearnings to make this planet of ours a worthy place for deserving kids.

It was obviously the kind of dramatic story we all love – filled with fear, tension, character, death, hope and salvation. It touched on our primeval fears of loss and helplessness; it took place in the watery depths and darkness. It was the horror of Jonah inside the whale’s cavernous belly; it was his plaintive cry: “From a narrow place I cry out to the Lord… You have thrown me down into the deep… And the rivers swirl around me… the waters rush round me to my very life’s edge” This was the place of our childhood nightmares, except now it was very real and inhabited by twelve children and they could have been our kids, our grandchildren…

The danger was certain, the odds stacked against them; the tragic death of the Thai diver, Saman Gunam, who died while laying oxygen tanks along the exit route only sharpened our trepidation.

But this was also a story of the best of humanity, our capacity to work together, to put aside our differences. So thirteen countries (including Australia and Israel) provided their best for the thirteen “Wild Boars Team”. Indeed, thirteen principals acting with principled faith! As Commander McEwan of the ADF put it: “It’s amazing just what human beings can do.” It was an operation of meticulous planning, creativity, ingenuity, persistence, courage and cooperation. Australians can be justly proud of our team of twenty including the intrepid Adelaide anaesthetist, Dr Richard Harris, who assessed the team’s health and stayed with them. Harris belongs to a group called “The Wet Mules” who base their philosophy on the American saying “Enough money to burn a wet mule.” In other words, they’re a group of ‘meshuganers’ whose daring and adrenalin-driven attributes are not just about

a thrill, but a skill. They remind us that we should never minimise the skills and talent of the intrepid adventurers of the world.

They attempt the impossible – burning the wet – and make it possible.

Boldness and pioneering are not only intrinsic to the human spirit, but basic to Judaism. We are the pilgrims of the spirit and shouldn’t forget the undaunted courage of Abraham and Sarah setting off into the unknown, our ancestors casting off into the wilderness, Nachson stepping into the Red Sea waves…

Bravery was not limited to the rescuers.

It was what kept these young boys alive in the caves, it was what allowed them to make the perilous journey through the dark to safety. It’s evident that it was also the courage and character of their coach, Eskapol, which sustained the boys. Eskapol who was orphaned at the age of ten, had trained to be a Buddhist monk and left the monastery just a few years ago to care for his ailing grandmother. He continued to work at a local monastery and training the local soccer team, whom are mainly poor or from stateless ethnic minorities in the border area between Myanmar and Thailand.

In the cave, Eskapol taught the boys how to meditate and conserve their strength; he also shared or gave them his food.

This speaks of the power of religion and faith as well as the potency of meditation, but perhaps, most of all, of the energy of altruism.

In a cynical world where egotism and narcissism are more common than generosity and empathy, the story of these ‘cavemen’ and their large band of rescuers including the Thai officials and military is an account of the unquenchable spirit of humanity. Biologist may speak of the selfish gene, this story speaks of the selfless gene.

It is too a vindication of the almost fanatical belief of Judaism in the essential goodness that lies within us; the undying belief we have the “Tzelem Elohim” the image of God within us all. As we say in our daily tefillot: “My God, the soul you placed in me, it’s pure, you created it, you formed it, you breathed it into me.” I love that phrase “you breathed it into me” – not only because it evokes the wondrous act of creation, but also because it reminds us of the preciousness of every breath we breathe, and that the fragile translucence of breath is the wonder of life itself. It was breath that was so cunning and so frightening in this tale of darkness: the diminishing quality and quantity of oxygen in the cave, the oxygen tanks carried so precariously through the intestinal passages to the boys, the breathing apparatus placed

so strategically along their escape route, the irony and tragic paradox of the death of Saman Gunam, who lost his own air supply while laying oxygen tanks; the air-borne bugs that attacked the lungs of some of the boys.

We value most that which we have almost lost. Abraham, suggests Jonathan Sacks, learnt this lesson from the Akedah, the binding of Isaac. That these thirteen intrepid souls were almost lost intensified the rapturous relief we felt at their rescue. The Morning Prayer I referred to continues: “One day you will take my soul from me… but as long as the soul is within me, I will thank you, Lord my God… Lord of all souls… who restores souls to lifeless bodies.” The restoration of life and breath to this team threatened by death and loss is a story worth celebrating.

It also reminds me of another evocative phrase from Psalms: “I called out to you God from the narrow places, You answered me by opening up the wide spaces.”

This dramatic event enlarged us all these past weeks. Let’s hold on for a little while longer to its important messages of hope and faith, courage, altruism and human ingenuity; let’s breathe a little deeper and act a little gentler.

The myth of Israeli ‘deterrence’ JEWISH NEWS SYNDICATE MARTIN SHERMAN

After the end of each round of fighting, Hamas has managed, within a relatively short space of time, to enhance its offensive military capabilities dramatically.

For more than a decade, Israel has inflicted heavy damage on Hamas. It has, however, never really managed to deter it in the real sense of the word—i.e., of breaking its will to continue the fight.

True, it has regularly forced it into several inter-bellum ceasefire, which it has always exploited to regroup, rearm and redeploy, but has never really eliminated its readiness to engage at some future opportunity, usually of its choosing—whenever it feels able to do so or unable not to. Thus, Israel has never succeeded in eliminating the tangible threat of continued conflict and combat. Quite the opposite! Despite the losses it suffered, Hamas has emerged from each round of fighting ever defiant, still spoiling for a fight. Indeed, not only has it never surrendered, it has even declared victory—not entirely without justification from its perspective.

Moreover, after the end of each round of fighting, Hamas has managed, within a relatively short space of time, to enhance its offensive military capabilities dramatically.

In this regard, Hamas has demonstrated impressive ingenuity in developing its martial prowess.

Indeed, in 2005, the most formidable weapon it had at its disposal was a primitive rocket with a half-kilogram explosive charge and a range of 5 kilometers. Today the Islamist terror group has missiles with a range of up to 100 kilometers and warheads of up to 100 kilograms. In addition, Hamas has burrowed a vast array of underground terror tunnels, developed naval capabilities and is reportedly engaged in producing drones for use against the Jewish state.

Clearly then, if Israel cannot dissuade the Palestinian terror groups from persisting with their murderous aggression, then it must cripple their ability to launch such aggression.

However, to do this, it must extricate itself from the constricting bonds of the two-state formula and the failed land-forpeace dogma on which it is based. It must cease relating to the Palestinian Arabs as prospective peace partners that can be cajoled into some enduring armistice and treat them as irreconcilable enemies that must be defeated in battle.

Only then will Israel be able to deal effectively with the endemic Judeocidal impulses of its sworn adversaries Martin Sherman is the founder and executive director of the Israel Institute for Strategic Studies.

U.S. President Trump: A balance sheet

U.S. President Donald Trump’s meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin served to increase the paranoia about him to an all-time high.

He was accused of “failing America,” acting “shamefully” and “disgracefully,” and even committing “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

Former CIA chief John Brennan went so far as to call his performance “treasonous.”

Trump certainly blundered when commenting on the similarity in behavior of the current Russian and American intelligence sources. This followed his outbursts at an earlier meeting with the Europeans in relation to NATO. Even Republican supporters rubbed their eyes in incredulity at some of his remarks to Putin. Yet, even following this barrage of criticism, Trump announced last week that he had invited Putin to Washington.

Nobody can deny that Trump behaves like a buffoon and has a penchant for vulgarity. He shoots from the hip, says what he thinks, often contradicts himself and incessantly posts juvenile tweets.

The facts are that he has made many errors and impulsively introduced new regulations with total disregard for the details, such as the restrictions on immigration, thus creating considerable chaos which could have been averted.

On the other hand, he has – by and large – neutralized the disastrous impact of his predecessor, Barack Obama, who, in his prime objective to achieve peace, discarded some of America’s long-standing allies, groveled to the Iranian terror state, and in the process diminished America’s global influence.

Trump started his presidency with a call for “America first” that enraged his opponents who linked it to pre-World War ll fascism.

A review of the facts will help evaluate his overall performance.

THE ECONOMY Trump has introduced a series of economic measures – decried by his opponents – but the outcome of which are significant positive indicators in the economy and a sharp upturn in the stock market.

IMMIGRATION In his determination not to follow the disastrous example in Europe, he imposed strict limitations, refusing to permit the country to be flooded by Islamic migrants. Although introduced clumsily, Trump’s immigration policy will historically be recognized as a wise decision.

CHINA After demanding a more balanced trade

relationship with China and warning against ongoing theft of American technology, he stunned the world by imposing tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese government-subsidized goods that were undercutting U.S. products. He threatened to extend this to vehicles. The Chinese responded by imposing tariffs on American goods, accusing Trump of starting a trade war and breaching the terms of the World Trade Organization. Time will tell, but many believe that Trump will be vindicated and that China will compromise on a fairer export policy and America’s disastrous negative trade balance will be reversed.

EUROPE AND NATO Trump shocked the Europeans and horrified their leaders by questioning the value of NATO and its members’ dependence on American largesse. He warned that the U.S would go it alone and would no longer pour U.S. taxpayers’ money into subsidizing the Europeans unless they shouldered the burden of their defense, raising their military spending from 2% to 4% of gross domestic product. He noted that Germany, the most powerful European nation, currently spends a mere 1.25% of its GDP on defense.

This created an upheaval. But the bottom line is that they will deliver, and Trump will be vindicated.

IRAN Trump has clearly intensified the war against terror. He has broken with the Iranians and is in the process of imposing powerful sanctions, which could lead to the collapse of the regime.

NORTH KOREA Trump personally initiated direct top-level

negotiations with the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, in an attempt to persuade him to denuclearize. Although the outcome is far from assured, these negotiations are themselves an unprecedented achievement.

RUSSIA Putin’s Russian Federation is an authoritarian state but a far cry from the totalitarian Soviet Union.

Whether there is any truth in the allegations that Russia meddled in the U.S. elections, few genuinely believe that such actions may have altered the outcome.

Despite their major differences, in particular in their attitudes toward Iran, both Putin and Trump pledged to cooperate and work jointly to combat terrorism.

Trump was bitterly castigated in the U.S. for adopting this approach with the Russians, but if he succeeds in easing tensions, avoiding a new Cold War and cooperating even to a limited degree, this too will be recognized as a significant positive achievement.

ISRAEL As far as most Israelis are concerned, Trump’s election has proved to be God’s gift to them.

Trump is the first American president to formally announce the alliance of the U.S. with Israel and assure the Israelis that the United States would back them if they were embroiled in conflict.

He brought an end to Obama’s biased policy of moral equivocation between Israel’s defensive measures with Palestinian terrorism and refused to maintain the façade that Palestinian Authority

President Mahmoud Abbas was a moderate man of peace. He also drastically cut back on U.S. aid to the Palestinians.

He has made it very clear that the U.S. would not tolerate the Palestinian diversion of millions of aid dollars annually to reward terrorists and provide pensions to their families.

The administration placed full blame on Hamas for the Gaza escalation of terror, accusing them of “pushing Israel to engage in increasingly significant acts of defense.”

Trump’s U.N. representative, Nikki Haley, aggressively defends Israel and condemns its biased critics. The U.S. also withdrew from the United Nations Human Rights Council, an organization dominated by tyrants and rogue states, which the Trump administration accused of hypocrisy and bias against Israel.

Despite howls of global protest and unlike his predecessors, Trump has fulfilled his electoral promise to move the U.S Embassy from Tel Aviv to Israel’s capital, Jerusalem.

In another unprecedented turn of events, following their recent meeting, Trump and Putin issued an astonishing joint press statement in which they explicitly proclaimed their commitment to “work together to ensure the security of Israel.”

Trump said, “I think that working with Israel is a great thing, and creating safety for Israel is something that both President Putin and I would like to see very much.”

To sum up, Trump is clearly calling the shots and rearranging the existing global order.

From an Israeli viewpoint, Trump has – to date – been like manna from heaven. That does not mean that we endorse all his actions and we continue to squirm at his cruder outbursts.

But despite the great schism in American politics since his election, Trump has gone a long way toward reversing the damage inflicted by Obama. He is disliked by most global leaders, but he is feared and has demonstrated his ability to deal positively with many international issues that have, until now, been ignored. His supporters can only hope that despite his erratic temperament, he stays the course.

While the Democrats are likely to win seats in the upcoming congressional elections, there are strong chances that Trump will be re-elected in 2020, especially if the current radicalization of the Democratic candidates is not reversed.

The one kind of intermarriage that is simply unacceptable JONATHAN S. TOBIN Religion used to be the line that wasn’t crossed.

Now it’s politics, and more importantly, views about Donald Trump that may determine who we’ll date or marry.

When The Forward’s Jenny Singer wrote this week about a tryst she shared with someone who failed to vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016, it was certainly a case of her sharing way too much information with her readers. But her conclusion that dating or sharing a bed with someone whose politics you don’t like is something reasonable people should avoid is hardly unusual. As numerous articles in other publications have reported, growing numbers of profiles of singles on online dating sites contain admonitions warning those of different political persuasions not even to think about contacting them.

That’s interesting not just because it reflects the bifurcated nature of our society in the age of U.S. President Donald Trump, but because it also demonstrates that while some people may have thought that the era of drawing lines between groups with respect to dating and marriage was over, that isn’t true. The only thing that has changed is the characteristics that define the lines that we will no longer cross.

As recently as the early 1990s, American Jews were still deeply divided about whether the rising rates of intermarriage were a threat to Jewish continuity in this country. But by the time the 2013 Pew Research Survey of Jewish Americans was published, the debate

Outside of the Orthodox world, virtually no one in the Jewish community is still prepared to address the issue—let alone champion the cause of endogamy or inmarriage. That’s understandable since with the rate of intermarriage among non-Orthodox Jews getting hitched approaching or now probably exceeding 80 percent, doing so offends the vast majority of the community.

This year, the level of acceptance for intermarriage among non-Orthodox

religious institutions was highlighted by the commencement speech of novelist Michael Chabon at the Reform movement’s Hebrew Union College, in which he lambasted the very idea of boundaries between Jews and nonJews, as well as Israel and its foes. In his view, the restrictive beliefs of Judaism had “lost its hold on the moral imagination” of Jews.

Though I think these views are terrible—and integral to the demographic and ideological trends that threaten to destroy liberal Judaism

in the United States—there’s no denying that the population numbers and the declining figures for Jewish affiliation show that his ideas are more accepted than some of us would like to believe.

Yet as Singer’s article and a host of others detailing the shunning of conservatives on dating sites, in addition to the justifications for the public harassment of Trump-administration figures, that drawing of lines is alive and well.

It’s just no longer about religion.

The reasons for this are twofold: a rising tide of extreme partisanship and a decline in religious observance among most Americans.

Americans of differing political persuasions no longer read, listen or watch the same media, and have lost the ability to tolerate opposing views or to credit political foes with good intentions. We have become two warring tribes, and our views on just about any issue, especially those about Trump, break down along partisan lines.

This development has been building with each succeeding president, starting with Bill Clinton, engendering a derangement syndrome among his opponents. But the advent of Trump—with his outrageous political stunts, boorish behavior and statements that break all the norms—has exacerbated this trend. Among Jews, this is aggravated by wild accusations that he is an anti-Semite or wouldbe dictator who is likely to destroy American liberty, if not a Nazi.

Why I stay Orthodox SHOSHANNA KEATS JASKOLL I believe in God and Torah and I know the difference between Jewish law and cultural distortion “Why do you stay Orthodox?”

That was the question posed to me the other day when I wrote an emotional Facebook post. I had spent the day hearing painful stories of Jewish women who suffered solely because they did what their rabbis told them to do. Even when the rabbis’ decrees went beyond the strict letter of the law, the women never thought to question their decisions.

Because in Orthodoxy Jewish law touches on the most personal of matters, including the messy arrangements of divorce, the intimate rituals of family purity, and even deciding the fate of an unviable pregnancy. And we are taught to listen.

Hearing these stories, it struck me that we Orthodox Jewish women often go through a lot, even when we do everything right.

Maybe especially when we do everything “right.”

This was part of my post: From growing up and learning the reasons behind our need for “modesty,”

the pressure to marry, marriage with little preparation, the trials of pregnancy, birth control, family purity laws ( the pain of not be allowed physical comforted at the worst times), keeping Jewish law, and more often cultural law, keeping secrets and pain silent, the taboo of abuse, the taboo of divorce. Birth control? Often times not. And child after child in so few years. The expectations. The pressure. ….right now I’m just thinking about all that women go through in Orthodox Judaism and no not every woman, but many, and many in different times and different ways.

And so often we are expected to suffer in silence that we don’t even realize what we went through until years later. What we endured and what we could not say.

Women trapped in marriage? Sigh, it’s such a shame, but that’s the way it is.

Years and years go by and most men – yes rabbis – shrug their shoulders. “Kacha zeh” (that’s how it is) And someone asked me, like so many in the past: “Why do you stay Orthodox?”

And, I get it. I do. Why do I stay in a system that I feel can breed such pain, such discomfort, a constant need to fight?

Why stay in a system where marriage

according to Jewish law means I and my daughters relinquish our freedom, trusting our future to the man we marry and the men of a religious court?

Why stay in a system where the ideal of modesty — that I believe in and uphold — is twisted, and taken to such extremes that women’s –girls’!– faces are blurred, left out, and torn down?

Why stay where I have little to no say in the policies that dictate my life? Where women are left out of the decision making process, and barred from being judges and rabbis where we have no chance of making change in policy?

The answer is simple if not easy.

I believe in God and Torah and know that most of the issues we face are cultural, not halachic (an issue of Jewish law). Knowing that difference makes all the difference to me.

It is not halacha to erase women.

It is not halacha to turn modesty into an extreme where women cannot discuss their body parts and the diseases that threaten them.

It is not halacha to allow a woman to be extorted in exchange for a divorce, to send her back to an abusive husband.

And it is not halacha to keep women from discussions and positions of

influence in areas that affect their lives.

Some said I wasn’t being fair, that many women are happy in Orthodox Judaism.

I am one of those women who are happy in Orthodox Judaism! Orthodox Judaism gives us our values, our community, our holy days, our perspective and our way of life. No, not exclusively, but it connects us to our generations and makes some sense of life — even when it slams against our modern sensibilities.

And that — exactly that — is why I stay. And why I, and many others, work towards change. In fact, it’s pretty much all I do. I connect with others who love Orthodoxy and we work together to make it better. We fight against the encroaching extremism.

We show the difference between halacha and culture. We push back when women are marginalized, ignored, shunned, and erased. We work to make it better.

We don’t fight Torah. We fight FOR Torah. We fight for a healthy Jewish community, one where women are heard — and seen.

People are hearing us. They are seeing the difference. They are speaking out and speaking up and making real change in their communities.

Candidly Speaking: The perils facing Anglo Jewry

While most British Jews remain committed to Israel, in most cases, the leadership fails to publicly confront and dissociate itself from antiIsrael Jews.

Over 10 years ago, I warned that the passivity of the Anglo-Jewish leadership would likely lead to disastrous political consequences and negatively impact the younger generation, which was being inadequately educated to face its challenges.

I described Anglo-Jewish leaders as “trembling Israelites, whose uppermost objective was to lie low and, above all, avoid rocking the boat.” The policy for confronting anti-Israel or antisemitic adversaries was summed up by then-president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews Henry Grunwald as the “softly softly” approach, generally opposing demonstrations and urging “not to shout when a whisper can be heard.” It was a classic case of shtadlanut – avoiding any public display and attempting to resolve problems by silent intercession.

Despite dissent from Jews at a grassroots level, the prevailing tendency of the leadership was also to ignore the fierce waves of antisemitism and hostility rising from both Muslim immigrants and the Left.

At the time, Ken Livingstone, a 21st-century Oswald Mosley, was the mayor of London, ranting his anti-Israel and antisemitic utterances.

The Jewish leadership sought to ignore him.

When the Muslim leadership called for the abolition of Holocaust Memorial Day, the cowardly Board of Deputies leaders responded with an apologetic press campaign claiming that Holocaust Memorial Day was no longer restricted to Jews but also “covers Cambodia, Rwanda, the Balkans and elsewhere.”

To enhance their social acceptability and approval ratings in the anti-Israel media, some Jewish leaders also publicly condemned Israel.

Tycoon Mick Davis, then chairman of Anglo Jewry’s United Jewish Israel Appeal, made comments at the time unprecedented for a mainstream Jewish leader. Davis proclaimed that Israel was in danger of becoming an “apartheid” state and warned the Israeli government that its “bad” actions directly impinged on him in London.

The Jewish leadership failed to condemn Davis for his remarks or request him to withdraw them.

In 2006, Melanie Phillips wrote Londonistan, a book predicting the growth of Islam in the UK and the consequent dangers facing society. She was immediately assailed by the Jewish leadership, which publicly condemned her as a mad extremist. Yet less than a decade later, the reality proved to be even worse than her nightmarish prophecies had predicted.

The community was stunned when the Labour Party elected as its leader Jeremy Corbyn, who would qualify as a modern Trotskyist. He was a staunch supporter of the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement and made no secret of his hatred of Zionism. On various occasions, he associated with a variety of antisemites and even Holocaust deniers. He also

British Jews, the majority of whom were longtime Labour supporters, were shocked. More so after many Labour MPs uttered antisemitic remarks, leading to a pseudo-investigation by the party, after which a few of the most extreme were suspended but the majority were considered kosher on the tenuous basis that their comments were anti-Zionist rather than antisemitic. More recently, the party diluted the internationally accepted definition of antisemitism by removing references such as accusing Jews of being more loyal to Israel than to their own country; claiming that Israel’s existence is a racist endeavor; applying a double standard to Israel; and comparing contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis. As a consequence, Jews have defected from Labour in droves, and in the last election the clear majority voted for the Conservative Party, whose leaders, especially David Cameron, were all highly supportive of the Jewish community.

In 2015, Jonathan Arkush was elected president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

After a series of cowardly leaders, who refused to speak out or protest against those promoting antisemitism, Arkush proved to be a courageous leader and boldly confronted antisemites, especially Corbyn. Since his assuming the position, the Board of Deputies has emerged as a true representative of the community. This, hopefully, will be maintained by his recently elected successor, Marie van der Zyl. But the current situation is seriously worrying.

Anglo Jewry faces grave threats. If an election were held today, there is every possibility that the next prime minister would be an outright antisemite.

However, aside from that, an additional serious peril facing the community is the atmosphere from within. I refer to fringe groups like Yachad that publicly criticize Israel. Over 500 Jews signed

a petition condemning the Board of Deputies for chastising Hamas and failing to deplore the Israeli killings of those attempting to penetrate Israel’s borders and engage in terrorist attacks.

But the most worrisome development is the status of the younger generation, whose members have been influenced by leaders over the years to accept their fate and remain silent.

Antisemitism at the universities has risen to record levels, and many, if not most, Jewish students simply lie low and try to avoid confrontations with anti-Israel Muslims and radicals. Moreover, even many committed Jews seeking social acceptability feel the need to be publicly critical of Israel.

Last month, there was an extreme display of this when a group of over 50 youngsters protested Israeli policy outside Parliament and then, emulating their American counterparts, named the individual Hamas terrorists killed trying to breach Israel’s border and recited kaddish for them. They also chided the Jewish community for not condemning “the Israeli occupation and the disproportionate force of the Israeli regime,” and expressed anger at Jewish leaders “for refusing to speak about the Nakba and refusing to listen to Palestinian initiatives.”

Their behavior, which received national and even global exposure, shocked and embarrassed most Jews, but what occurred subsequently was even worse. Most of the youngsters involved were members of the Reform youth group Netzer, which purports to be Zionist. One of them, Nina Morris-Evans, had been appointed as a leader of a youth tour of Israel, but she was informed that her actions made her ineligible for this position.

This led to a petition addressed to the Jewish leadership from over 100 signatories describing themselves as “past and present leaders from a range of Zionist youth movements.” They conveyed outrage at being “abused, harassed and bullied online – particularly in a violent,

misogynistic manner extending even to death threats.” They pledged not to bow to intimidation and, as “Zionists,” would insist on supporting a plurality of narratives, including those critical of Israel.

What was significant about this petition was that all the participants were either former or current Zionist activists, including a small number from Habonim, the Labor Zionist youth movement, who were apparently unaware that their own party in Israel would have condemned them. But the majority were from Netzer, who obviously had the imprimatur of their rabbis, which accounted for the large number who signed such a hostile anti-Israel petition.

For the record, Reform Rabbi Laura JannerKlausner and Geoffrey Marks, the chairman of Reform Jewry, described the abuse of MorrisEvans as “misogynistic and violent,” condemning the critics as “bullies,” stressing that Reform Judaism would encourage young people to express their views publicly.

The reality is that today, most Reform rabbis are non-Zionist, and though paying lip service to love of Israel, they are in many cases outrightly critical and even anti-Israel.

These elements are supported by Davis, now chief executive of the Conservative Party, who condemned those “seeking to hound kaddish participants from their jobs.” He added that there was an absence of Zionist leadership for which one turns “to Israel but finds little to inspire.”

The response from the leadership was muted, and there is yet to be heard a reprimand by the Zionist Federation pointing out that such behavior is incompatible with purporting to be a Zionist.

The Jewish Chronicle editorial adopted a neutral position, conceding that most Jews would consider the kaddish for Hamas warped, but claimed that the open letter reflected “a potentially seismic change in the community” and called for “goodwill on all sides.”

Anglo Jewry is confronting painful challenges.

The fact that “Zionist” youth can publicly express such hostility toward Israel reflects a breakdown in education.

While most British Jews remain committed to Israel, in most cases, the leadership fails to publicly confront and dissociate itself from antiIsrael Jews. It legitimizes them when applying the policy that the community must tolerate the presence of extremists within the “big tent.”

There will be disastrous long-term consequences if demented fanatics like the Jewish deviants reciting kaddish for Hamas or those who, in the name of pluralism, demand toleration of such views are enabled to remain within the Jewish or Zionist mainstream.

In this climate of overt antisemitism in the Labour Party, coupled with the inadequate education of its Zionist youth, the Jewish leadership faces its greatest challenge. The one kind of intermarriage that is simply unacceptable FROM PAGE 8 Trump can be difficult, if not impossible, to defend at times. However, the willingness not merely to oppose him, but to treat the 63 million Americans who voted for him as “deplorables” (to use Hillary Clinton’s unfortunate phrase) who are willing accomplices to a mythical advent of fascism with whom decent people may not associate—let alone date or mate—is escalating political warfare to a previously unknown level in this country.

This has been accompanied by a decline of religious faith among many Americans.

That is especially true among non-Orthodox Jews, whose embrace of liberal secular values has led many to believe that defining

ourselves principally by faith is outdated.

Many Jewish youth think that supporting a country like Israel, which is sectarian in nature and avowedly the nation state of the Jews rather than one that embraces purely universal values, is unacceptable.

So, too, is the notion of restricting one’s romantic choices to fellow Jews. Since nonJews feel the same—intermarriage rates wouldn’t be high without the freedom that led to a breakdown of religious barriers— intermarriage is now the norm, rather than the exception.

It’s perfectly normal to seek out someone who shares your politics rather than your faith if you are, like most Americans, not religious. Relationships are difficult enough without them being complicated by political

arguments, especially in an era when opinions about Trump—and the differences between liberals and conservatives—remain so extreme.

Yet if the majority of American Jews who share Singer’s liberal views agree that politics, as opposed to faith, is the line that one shouldn’t cross, then the consequences are enormous.

A country in which our political beliefs are regarded the way we used to think about religion—as revealed truth in which absolute faith is required, rather than something that friends and neighbors can agree to disagree about—is moving towards a very dangerous place.

The essence of democracy is not just a willingness to compete in elections, but to

accept their results and behave as a loyal opposition when you lose. A knee-jerk response should not be to “resist” the other side. Trump may not be a normal president, but most of his policies are normal, and supporting them doesn’t automatically make someone a fascist. If we’ve arrived at the point where we no longer regard our fellow citizens of the opposing party as not just mistaken, but evil—and a member of different warring tribe that must be eradicated, as opposed to debated—then a real line has been crossed, one that might mean no turning back.

Ways that Hadassah can touch the heart HADASSAH AUSTRALIA RUTH RAMONE ROSEN Fundamental to the Jewish concept of charity, or ’tzedakah’ in Hebrew, is the obligation to give a proportion of one’s wealth to those in need. It is fundamentally about righteousness, justice and fairness.

Making a donation without understanding what the impact of that could be on others is a missed opportunity. While giving of itself is very important, the real benefit is to gain insight into the world of the recipient and to feel connected to the outcome.

There are few things quite as empowering in our lives as that.

Making a donation to Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem is actually about impacting the lives of people in Australia. Most people are unaware of the closeness of that relationship.

Earlier this year, Hadassah Australia, the local representative of the Jerusalem-based hospital, played host to Professor Tamir Ben-Hur from Hadassah’s Department of Neurology, who spoke passionately about research aimed at eradicating MS and other neurological diseases that are wreaking havoc on the lives of thousands of Australians and their families.

During the visit, a member of a trial being

run by Professor Dimitrios Karussis, the head of Hadassah’s Multiple Sclerosis Center, revealed his own struggle with MS. Not only had the trial affirmed his belief that a cure was possible, but he had experienced profound physical changes that he hadn’t dared to dream about.

That person, Mark Lewis, is arguably the UK’s most famous media defamation lawyer, credited with closing the Murdoch family’s flagship masthead, ‘News of the World’.

The majority of people in the audience to hear from Prof Ben-Hur and Mark were people from or connected to MS Australia.

That gives some idea about the relevance of research being conducted a world away from our shores.

The Hadassah relationship with Australia doesn’t end with research into neurological diseases.

Seemingly at the other end of the spectrum are medical clowns. But clowning in a medical context is one of the new frontiers in science, with compelling research that shows how important it is in patient support and staff welfare, and economic returns to participating hospitals. Hadassah was the first hospital in Israel and one of the first in the world to integrate medical clowns into its wards.

Ostensibly aimed at children, the clowns are

expanding their reach into the general wards as well.

How does Australia benefit? Hadassah Australia partnered with the Starlight Children’s Foundation to provide learnings from Hadassah for use in local hospitals. This close collaboration took centre stage during our 2018 Purim Campaign when we raised funds that were distributed via Mishloach Manot to Hadassah and to the Children’s hospitals in Melbourne and Sydney.

The relationship with Australia has also meant that Israel benefits from successful outcomes in the therapeutic and clinical fields that have been achieved locally. A great example is the work of Professor Frank Oberklaid from the Centre for Community Child Health at The Royal Children’s Hospital, and the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute.

Hadassah Australia recognised that community paediatric healthcare in Israel was below the standard of Australia, so we approached Prof Oberklaid and asked him to visit Israel and meet with his counterparts in the paediatric field.

The Goshen Project as it came to be known was conceived by Hadassah Australia. Since it was founded in Israel in 2010, Goshen has partnered with Hadassah Hospital, the Israeli Medical Association, the Israeli Ministry of

Health, the Health Insurance Services (Kupot), the Hadassah School of Public Health & Community Medicine, the Israeli Ambulatory Pediatrics Association, Ben Gurion University of the Negev and the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

Each year, Goshen fellows are sent from Israel to the Centre for Community Child Health in Melbourne where they learn about the treatment of chronic illnesses among children as well as developmental and behavioural problems, and the ways to address them. We know that many of the conditions observed in adult life such as diabetes, heart disease and mental health problems, begin in early childhood. It’s fair to say that Goshen has achieved a seismic shift in the way that community paediatric medicine is delivered in Israel.

These fellowships are funded by Australians through Hadassah Australia. It’s hard to think of a better investment in the care and wellbeing of children and their families.

Shaare Zedek: Building a Healthy Future AUSTRALIAN FRIENDS OF SHAARE ZEDEK INC MIRIAM PACANOWSKI At the heart of every Jewish Simcha is the desire for continuity and growth.

The Australian Friends of Shaare Zedek celebrated its own Simcha this year. The annual Shabbat Nachamu Appeal at the end of July was an outstanding success.

Volunteers of all ages including a strong contingent of Bnei Akiva madrichim and 3 generations of one family, assembled to call donors and to raise funds for a state of the art Gene Sequencer for the hospital in Jerusalem.

Clinical Geneticist Professor Agnes Bankier OAM, Deputy Chair of the AFSZ Inc says, “The Gene Sequencer enables Shaare Zedek Medical Centre to analyse millions of molecules at once.

The ability to screen for genetic mutations enables us to help parents who are both carriers of genetic disease to have healthy children through IVF, helps people who are genetically predisposed to heart disease or certain cancers to take preventative steps, and enables us to provide personalised targeted treatment with a far higher success rate.”

When art, like love, is timeless TODAY TOMMORROW FOREVER RYAN ABRAMOWITZ, ARTIST Today Tomorrow Forever is a story of love, art, a love of art, a love of love, and painting art which honours this love. It has been a way of marrying my Jewish identity and Yiddishkeit with my artistic passion.

One of my favourite philosophers / poets, Henry David Thoreau proclaimed “the world is but a canvas to our imagination”.

This has resonated throughout all my art and the grand expanse of the world I try to capture, from the stars to the sea.

Indeed my Ketubot harvest motifs drawn and derived from the canvas of life that surrounds us, and the stories the couples I meet share about their becoming and being.

The Jewish proverb “Only love gives us a taste of eternity” is the underlying legacy of Today Tomorrow Forever and its aspirations of creating and crafting an artwork, which analogous to the couples’ love, transcends time.

Today Tomorrow Forever started in 2015 when one of my closest lifelong friends asked me to paint the Ketubah for her upcoming wedding. Whilst I had prior to this received commissions to paint art for residential and commercial contexts, painting Ketubot was a completely unexplored and unconsidered space.

My Ketubot services can be divided into two streams; Bespoke and Predesigned.

Amongst the bespoke oeuvre, each Ketubah is individually customised and

designed in dialogue with the couple to include symbols or colours that have special meaning to their relationship, thus developing a generative metaphor for the Ketubah. Here, I listen to the couples talk about who they are and what is important to them. Together we charter a philosophical and artistic endeavour that seeks to arrive at an outcome that is the most poetic and personal expression for each love story. In this way the couple feels that the Ketubah is a personalised visualisation of their relationship and narrative.

Being sensitive to the expense of weddings I am passionate about making my work accessible to all budgets by also offering a range of ever expanding creations in which the text is personalised and placed on predesigned artwork. These Ketubot are just as beautiful, and blossom from the

inspiration gleaned from the world around us in all its magnificent glory. In response to what I see, feel and think, these Ketubot flow from my imagination and spill into landscapes, dreamscapes and skyscapes that backdrop the words of the Ketubot.

These can be all embellished with hand painted initials and other details for a personalized touch.

My artwork traverse a wide range of aesthetic styles and employ different approaches, media and technology depending on the design. Whilst some couples prefer Ketubot that have motifs or imagery that can include landscapes, flowers, and animals, others desire pieces that are more neutral and contemporary, with abstracted undertones. What I’ve noted as being extremely popular are watercolour washed backgrounds that ambiguously gesture the sky, the earth or the ripples dappling through water in an oceanic veil. I have also done various Ketubot with laser cut frames which create interesting intersections through the way the frame silhouettes the artwork with organic or geometric shapes. I am always innovating and expanding, and earlier this year designed a Ketubah which featured hand embroidered embellishments onto linen.

The essence of my business is creating artwork for all Simcha’s and momentous life occasions (including births, Bar/Bat Mitzvot, wedding anniversaries etc). 2018 (2k chai as I call it) has also graced me

with new canvases of opportunities – from painting Prayers for the State of Israel (to be installed in Synagogues) to contributing an artwork for the month of Adar to the Mesaviv Calender (a Hebrew calendar configured as a circle where different international artists paint artwork inspired by the chaggim of each month). The artwork for the Ketubot can also be creatively and imaginatively extended into other aspects of the wedding.

Here some couples have requested Birkat Habayits which match their Ketubot as wedding presents, whilst others have used the artwork in benchers, Thank You cards, invitations and other wedding collateral.

One bride even loved the flower from her ketubah so much it was printed on editable cookies at the wedding and on the dance floor – allowing the entire wedding to cohere together through the same floral motif.

Seeing the pollination of my art into these other ‘canvases’ is so exciting.

As an artist, it is still the most unbelievable honour for a couple to trust me with the opportunity to make their Ketubah, a document charged with such immense halachic significance. With every order, I feel incredible gratitude and appreciation.

Whilst this document is painted and witnessed on earth, to me it is residency floats on the clouds of heaven where it is vaulted by Hashem, for eternity. Like love which is timeless, for every occasion I strive to create something that is cherished and celebrated, today, tomorrow and forever.

Your home away from home SOUTH CAULFIELD HEBREW CONGREGATION Last year I was fortunate to lead my fifth Birthright trip to Israel. On Shabbat morning the plans we had made for the participants changed at the last minute and I landed up attending a small Shtibl (a small informal style Shule) situated in the heart of Jerusalem. The Shtibl followed the traditions of the Chassidim of Ger and it was actually the first time I had attended a Synagogue of this following. They called me up to lift the Torah (Hagbaah) and when I approached the Bima I felt a sense of trepidation. I was unsure if they had any special or different customs to those with which I was accustomed. Did they do things differently? Would they admonish me if my method was different to theirs? Fortunately they were very friendly and gave me a quick briefing on their particular custom. All went well.

I mention this story because it is often the case or experience for families when it comes to celebrating a Simcha. It may be a wedding or wedding call-up, bar or bat mitzvah, circumcision or baby naming. For many it could be the first time they are celebrating one of the above mentioned occasions and the sense of the unfamiliar could be daunting and nerve-racking. To add to the ceremonial nerves there are the additional stresses of catering, guest lists, outfits and other costs that can make celebrating a simcha quite overwhelming in so many ways.

It is therefore crucial, in my view, that the Shule, its Rabbi, Rebbetzin, Chazzanim and administrative team, need to make the family feel welcomed, comfortable and at ease. They need to provide clear and user-friendly explanations of what to expect and be available to answer any questions that may arise. It is also of great importance that the regular attendees do their best to make the family feel at home in the Synagogue.

should have a connection and positive relationship with the Shule, Rabbi and Rebbetzin. At South Caulfield Hebrew Congregation we try our utmost to ensure that this occurs. We take pride in getting to know our families or couples. It is one of the most enjoyable facets of the job to host families for a Shabbat dinner or lunch and get them to know our family and be welcomed in our home.

We can always glean inspiration from the very first “outreach” couple, Abraham and Sarah. Their tent was open from all sides and they welcomed all passers-by with open arms and of course a delicious meal. It was in the heart of the desert, a place that could make one feel isolated or lonely, lost and confused, where Abraham and Sarah transformed that reality into one of friendship and warmth, encouragement and inspiration.

There is a twofold litmus test I use to see if I have managed to emulate Abraham and Sarah in regards to being involved in a Simcha. Firstly it is important that I feel that I am celebrating not just the Simcha of one my congregants or members but the simcha of my extended family. Secondly I want the couple or family to feel the same way and also that the Rabbi was not just simply officiating or doing his job but rather someone who made their day or occasion that extra bit special!

Seventy Five years – But Still “Young and Free” CAULFIELD SHULE RABBI RALPH GENENDE OAM It’s been said there’s nothing more perfect than hindsight and I would add there’s nothing more imperfect than foresight when understood in terms of accurately or perfectly predicting the future.

Looking back at the history of Caulfield Shule, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, one can look back with pride at the shule and community that has been at the geographical and metaphysical centre of the Melbourne Jewish community since its inception. Its enviable location in the heart of the shtetl means it has attracted a large and diverse section of our community. It’s been a place for the frum and the not-so-frum, the deeply committed, the traditional, the questioning and the questing. It has been a place of learning and davening, but also a centre for celebrating and connecting.

It’s been a serious “beit tefillah” since here you can pray daily, hear superb chazanut like that of our world-class Chazan Dov Farkas, and great choirs. Admittedly at some points, especially Yamim Noraim, the tefillah is seriously challenged by the energetic conversations taking place.

In the last decade we have hopefully dented that culture of chattering conversation during tefillah and shifted it to challenging and compelling conversations about the nature and future of Jewish identity. That’s what has made Caulfield Shule a “beit

midrash” (centre of learning) not only in the traditional sense, but also as a place to learn about being Jewish today. Our Shule is place for Talmudic debate — we have a regular Daf Yomi Talmud class, shiurim and a long tradition of scholarly learning. But for the last while we’ve also become a Beit Midrash, a house of questions, a centre for the incubation and generation of ideas about being a contemporary Jew. Together with supportive boards we’ve created a centre of inclusion and inclusiveness, sought out and embraced the unaffiliated, the sceptical, the wounded and the estranged. We have vigorously sought ways to recognize the role of women in our

Leibler Yavneh College students help make wishes come true LEIBLER YAVNEH COLLEGE Secondary students at Leibler Yavneh College recently ran a Bake Sale, raising over $1000 for The Make-A-Wish Australia & Israel Shared Appeal.

The Make-A-Wish Australia & Israel Shared Appeal grants wishes to children and teens with life-threatening medical conditions. All donations to the charity are shared equally between the two countries, changing lives of really sick children and teens in both Australia and Israel.

The charity event, organised by Year 8 students, Jonah Feiglin and Josh Adelman included a talk by Stephen Sharp, Chairman of Make-A-Wish Australia at the Secondary School Assembly, a night of baking involving students from all year levels and an afternoon of selling their baked goods to students and parents.

congregation, we have welcomed those who are single, and we have respectfully reached out to our gay members, especially the young gay millennials in the Melbourne Jewish community. We have established “Darchei Shalom”, our social action committee to reach out to the vulnerable and lonely in the wider community.

All of this feeds into our vision of being a true “Beit Knesset”, a place where different Jews come together to celebrate being Jewish Australians.

So we’ve got our Caulfield Bubs and our Kids Club, our very busy Bar and Bat Mitzvah programs, and we’ve attracted inspirational youth leaders and welcomed

the forward looking, open-minded Hineni youth movement who are now integral to the congregation. We continue to seek ways to engage our millennials and Inkr572 Shabbat dinners have been a driving force behind this. And we welcome our Tuesday Shmoozeday crowd and our Senior citizens at Arcare on Kooyong Road for a preShabbat service.

A 75th is about celebrating the past achievements of the congregation as reflected in the dedication plaque of the Shule to the Memorial of the martyrs of the Shoah. It was the Shoah survivors who built the Shule and displayed such resilience, personal sacrifice and faith in the future. We also have another name (of the congregation) “Ahavat Shalom” (“Lovers and Seekers of Peace”) as reflective of the community’s vibrant present and promising future. We are a shule in the middle, but the middle isn’t about complacency. Our mission and ethos is to promote a moderate, engaging Orthodoxy; in this we are more passionate than parev, “vabrent” but not “fafrumpt”, outward looking but inwardly insular. We put people first.

So we may be 75 years old but we feel as vigorous as a 15 year old. We don’t know what the future holds but are looking to it with hope, to expanding our programs and facilities, to engaging new personnel, to continuing as a moderate, welcoming and informed force at the centre of Melbourne Jewry.

New Inventions from Bialik Students

BIALIK COLLEGE

A drone built from scratch with individual components, a walking cane that is more than just an ambulatory aid and various digital apps that help simplify busy lifestyles ... these are some of the amazing and challenging projects Bialik students have pursued on their journey towards excellence and personal achievement.

Bialik is constantly looking for new ways of developing the individual through opportunities and programs that supplement the school curriculum. These enrichment and extension opportunities are offered to students from Kindergarten through to Year 12 through the College’s Rosenkranz Centre for Excellence and Achievement. They enable students with diverse talents, high potential or specific passions and interests to develop deeper understandings and new pathways for learning.

An important role of the Rosenkranz Centre is connecting older Bialik students to professionals and mentors in industries and universities. This enables students to learn in authentic, real life environments about topics and subjects that develop their strengths and areas of interest.

Recently, a team of three Year 9 students, Sam Frenkel, Cooper Gardy and James Thurston, were involved in BrainSTEM’s Innovation Challenge to develop a new product for the Health sector. BrainStem is an organisation that connects students with lecturers or PhD students from universities within Melbourne. With the guidance of

Bialik’s Rosenkranz Centre and their mentor, Dr Gianni Renda, the students travelled weekly to Swinburne University where they developed a cost-effective walking cane with a host of well researched features and design attributes.

The students chose ‘Walking Forward’ as the name of their project: “The project’s name reflects its function and design. This name reflects how our customer is walking forward, confidently, into his or her new phase of life. Our project name also reflects the forward thinking, innovative design of the product we made.”

Over a 12-week period, the Bialik students progressed through all of the stages of design including brainstorming, researching stake holders and audience, creating mood boards, developing a ‘virtual’ person, investigating brands, learning to use design software (Fusion 360), printing and examining prototypes, redesigning and refining the design (to ensure the product was both recreationally and aesthetically pleasing) and 3D printing.

“We designed the walking cane to be less of a burden and more of an elegant, classic piece to be proud of. It appeals to our target audience, referencing heritage aspects, such as automotive design from the 60\’s, vintage ski poles, and different colour trends,” said the students. “The handle design allows the user to utilise both hands to get out of a chair, the ridge running along the handle allowed us to use glow-in-the-dark paint to help the user locate the cane at night and the hook also comfortably latches onto the user’s wrist

for greater mobility.”

The entire process was a unique and memorable learning experience for the students but what they were most proud of, was that thanks to 3D printing and materials sourced from local shops, the cost of producing the cane would be under $20 per

unit, making it an affordable aid to those who need it.

At Bialik, young people can expect to have their bright ideas nurtured and expanded.

The greatest beneficiaries, of course, will be the users of these young thinkers’ future creations.

Men’s Health on the Agenda ST KILDA HEBREW CONGREGATION St Kilda Shule proudly hosted a talk on men’s health issues presented by Monash University Associate Professor Geoff Sussman. Professor Sussman discussed general skin care followed by questions and a light supper in the Shule’s Danglow Centre.

“The event was excellent” said event chairman Ron Singal, “It was a wonderful opportunity for the men in our Shule community to come together for an informative and engaging talk”.

Professor Sussman is a well-known member of the Jewish community who comes highly credentialed. He has served Jewish sport and the wider community with distinction for over 30 years including as President of the Ajax Swimming Club, Victorian Vice President to the Australian Maccabi Federation and Chairman of the Victorian Maccabi Council.

Professor Sussman has also acted as Team and Section Manager of numerous Swimming Teams at both Carnival and three Maccabi Games two as part of senior team management and was involved in sport for many years in Gymnastics, Swimming and Diving. He was the president of Gymnastics Victoria, a position held from 1987-2006 and is currently chairman of the Gymnastics Foundation.

One of the highlights of his distinguished career was serving as Team Manager for

the elite Australian diving team during the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992.

“The Professor’s talk was very well received by those in attendance and I think it gave food for thought about the basics of skin health” said the Shule’s rabbi Yaakov Glasman, “he has done some critical research in the area of skin care, especially when it comes to treating wounds and burns, which many people would be well advised to learn about”.

A member of Sports Medicine Australia for more than 30 years, Professor Sussman has a wide experience in Pharmacology and is spokesman for Sports Medicine Australia on drugs in sport.

In fact, he was a member of the Doping Advisory Control Panel for Swimming Australia from 1988 to 2005 and served as a delegate to both the Victorian Olympic council and the Victorian Commonwealth Games Association.

Currently at the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Monash University, Sussman was the first Professor of wound care in Australia and has over 100 publications including 27 book chapters.

He was awarded an OAM in the Queen’s birthday Honours in 2006 for his work in wound care as a researcher, educator and clinician and was recognised at the 2008 World Wound Healing Congress in Toronto with a life time achievement award for his work in wound management.

Specialist Classes in the Early Years at The King David School KING DAVID SCHOOL The educational philosophy and approach in the Early Years program at The King David School utilises the children’s ideas and interests and is developed by educators using carefully planned playbased experiences.

The focus is on developing children’s ability to think, use and recognise language and develop fine motor through play, art, dance, music, movement and interacting with others. Children are taught to become effective learners as they develop and extend their communication skills, build their self-confidence and learn to selfregulate their emotions.

Beginning in Term 2, the Junior Kindergarten classes came together to participate in a weekly learning hub of specialist classes. Three classes have rotated through movement, literacy and thinking.

It is an opportunity for children to become flexible learners as they engage with peers not in their everyday learning space and teachers whom they may not interact with often. Learning to share space with others, work with new people and in new spaces is key to building resilience for learning.

Through learning how to interact and manage friendships, solve problems and recognise and manage feelings, the group is learning essential life skills to support wellbeing and positive mental health and sense of self as they move forward with

their education. Specialist classes in the Early Years Celebrating Shavuot The specialist classes include: • Early Literacy and Library These sessions focus on building key literacy concepts such as: exploring the sounds of language, concepts of print, comprehension and discussing the ways that texts are structured.

• Philosophy and Art The children engage in deeper thinking and conversation. Concepts around safety, sharing, kindness and problem solving are explored. Ideas are expressed through visual arts, drawing and painting.

• Movement and Sport The main focus is on building gross-motor skills and developing physical skills through an obstacle course and a few thinking and moving games like the parachute. The session always ends with a meditation where children lie down and allow their muscles to become relaxed.

Presentations At Yeshivah and Beth Rivkah YESHIVAH - BETH RIVKAH COLLEGES Chumash Presentations held at both Yeshivah and Beth Rivkah Primary to round off Term 2 thrilled audiences of parents and friends as entertaining displays of newly acquired knowledge were presented to the crowds. Year 1 students performed a medley of songs and each student was presented with, and proudly accepted, their very first Chumash which they were all eager to begin using.

delighted their audience with their rendition of beautiful Shabbos songs, while a new, more interactive, format was introduced for the Yeshivah performance this year.

The new structure provided scope for students to showcase the learning they had undertaken - with students presenting a posuk (verse) to their family and an explanation of one of the days of creation - and a creative hands-on craft activity rotation allowed students and their families to work together to create keepsakes from the event.

Jewish International Film Festival returns in 2018 JIFF The Jewish International Film Festival returns to Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Canberra this November for another spectacular year of outstanding Jewish cinema from all over the world, building on 29 years of Jewish film festivals in Australia.

The Festival will also visit two new venues in 2018: Roseville Cinemas in Sydney, and Cameo Cinemas, Belgrave in Melbourne.

Each year, the Jewish International Film Festival presents a truly diverse selection of films from Australia and around the world. In 2017, the Festival screened 65 films from 26 countries including Israel, Australia, Argentina, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, UK and USA. “2018 is already shaping up to be another fantastic year for the Jewish International Film Festival. With a program packed with world-class cinematic gems offering fascinating insights into global Jewish culture, we can’t wait to announce this vibrant selection of films,” said Jewish International Film Festival Artistic Director, Eddie Tamir.

Mamma Mia!, The Musical at the Princess Theatre, MAMMA MIA ALEX FIRST Several sizzling scenes highlight an infectiously entertaining, toe-tapping, body swaying, hand clapping production of Mamma Mia!, which has officially opened at the Princess Theatre.

With a successful Sydney season under their belts, the cast of 24 and eight musos are well practiced and rounded performers … and how it shows!

All the principals are strong and the fairy tale appeal of the story, along with the enduring and beloved popular ABBA music make this a delightful and joyful crowd pleaser, which is loads of fun at, at times, very funny.

There’s a real energy about the piece, which taps into the audience excitement and lifts the spectacle to even greater heights.

Mamma Mia!’s origins are with persistent English creator Judy Craymer and British playwright Catherine Johnson, who wove together the tale based upon the classic songs composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus.

The story centres around a young bride to be, brought up by a hard-working single mum who runs a taverna on a Greek Island.

20-year-old Sophie (Sarah Morrison) is preparing to marry her fiancé, Sky (Stephen Mahy), when she comes across her mother Donna’s (Natalie O’Donnell’s) diary from the 1970s.

In it, she names three men – Sam Carmichael (Ian Stenlake), Bill Austin (Josef Ber) and Harry Bright (Phillip Lowe) – who could be her father.

So, without telling her mother, Sophie invites all of them to her wedding, hoping to discover which one is the dad who hasn’t been a part of her life all these years.

Only, she words their invitations as if they came from her mum.

What mother doesn’t know won’t hurt her, right?

And Sophie wants her dad there on the biggest day of her life.

Let’s just say that as a result the lead up to her nuptials is not what anyone had expected.

After all, these men haven’t set eyes upon Donna for two decades and didn’t even know Sophie existed.

O’Donnell and Morrison do much of the heavy lifting and their vocal abilities are impressive.

It seems only fitting that O’Donnell, who starred as Sophie in the original Australian production of Mamma Mia!, has come full circle to fill the pivotal role of Donna.

Stenlake, Ber and Lowe, too, find opportunities to shine and seize them.

Donna’s back-up singers from days gone by, when they were known as Donna and the Dynamos – Tanya (Jayde Westaby) and Rosie (Alicia Gardiner) – are far from shabby in executing a few choice moves of their

own.

And talking of moves and pick up lines, Sophie’s fiancé Sky’s (Stephen Mahy’s) mates – Donna’s workers, Eddie (Alex Gibson-Giorgio) and Pepper (Sam Hooper) – individually and collectively generate howls of laughter and adoration from most appreciative patrons.

The choreography by Tom Hodgson is seamless and the staging built around a Greek taverna (set design is by Linda Bewick) most effective in setting the mood.

Costumes, props, lighting and sound perfectly compliment the narrative.

Next year will mark 20 years since Mamma Mia! first appeared in London’s West End and subsequently people the world over flocked to see it – more than 60 million, in fact.

I am delighted to be able to say that the show retains all the charm it did when it first hit the stage.

It still puts a smile on your dial and a spring in your step. It is a happy, up-tempo celebration of a gentler time and of love, laughter and friendship.

Truly triumphant, Mamma Mia! is well worth the price of admission.

Directed by Gary Young, the musical – with 22 brilliant numbers – continues to shine. I see no reason the timeless tunes won’t resonate for many generations to come.

never a chance this latest incarnation would tank, but I am here to say it is exceeding good.

McKenney is the ultimate showman. His vocals are strong and polished. He struts and pouts and relishes the limelight as the leading man and he delivers in spades.

His rendition of Sweet Transvestite alone is worth the price of admission.

Bedding Janet and then Brad is milked for all it is worth ... with a few choice additions and has everyone in stitches.

A reference to Presidents Trump and Putin when he first appears immediately ingratiates Jacobson to the patrons ... as if they weren’t sold already.

But his finest moment comes when he gives an off the cuff response to a heckler in the crowd, which references his breakout role in the movie Kenny.

Make no mistake, those dulcet tones and the nuances of speech required as narrator fit oh so comfortably on the big man’s shoulders.

After more than 1,200 performances in the role,

Kristian Lavercombe has made Riff Raff his own.

As always, what a revelation! Front and centre in The Time Warp, he has all in raptures.

The remarkably chiseled and sculpted body of Brendan Irving, who appeared in the 2014 and ‘15 Australian tours of The Rocky Horror Show, has lost no definition in the intervening period.

Complete with glossy leopard print budgie smugglers he is, indeed, the perfect specimen of a man created by the nefarious transvestite.

Nadia Komazec will forever be remembered for her visual tomfoolery as Columbia in an elongated send off to Frank in the second act ... which makes her an instant audience favourite.

Rob Mallett and Michelle Smitheram, complete with greasepaint, nail the decidedly dorky Brad Majors and Janet Weiss.

In all, there are 13 cast members, including Amanda Harrison as the Usherette and Magenta, and James Bryers as Eddie and Dr Scott, and a dynamic five-piece band.

The fact that the music is so recognisable makes the experience so much richer because you are all but salivating for the next signature tune.

Eight songs in the first act include Science Fiction, Damn It Janet, Over at the Frankenstein’s House, The Time Warp, Sweet Transvestite, The Sword of Damocles, I Can Make You A Man (plus a reprise of this) and Hot Patootie.

After interval we are fed another six numbers – Touch-A-Touch-A Touch Me, Once In A While, Eddie’s Teddy, Planet Schmanet, Going Home and Super Heroes, plus reprises of Science Fiction, The Time Warp and Sweet Transvestite.

What is not to love about this spectacular cult classic?

It is yet another brilliant and triumphant production, with direction from Christopher Luscombe and choreography by Nathan M. Wright.

It is playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne until 26th August, 2018.

Cult Classic Thrills THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW ALEX FIRST Just as outrageous and kooky as when it first appeared on the scene 45 years ago, The Rocky Horror Show has lost none of its sass either.

I dare say that a fair chunk of the audience know the words to almost every song and hang on each nuance ... the revivals have been that plentiful.

It matters naught though, for the cult worship that Frank-N-Furter, Riff Raff, Rocky Horror, Magenta, Columbia, Dr Everett Scott and, of course, Brad and Janet have spawned.

The Rocky Horror Show is a tribute to the science fiction and B-grade horror movies of the late 1940s through to the early 1970s.

It tells the story of an innocent, newly engaged couple who get caught in a storm and end up outside the home of a mad transvestite scientist.

In front of them, Dr Frank-N-Furter unveils his new creation, a muscle man, a perfect physical specimen, named Rocky Horror.

The music, lyrics and the book are by Richard O’Brien.

According to Wikipedia, as an out-of-work actor in the early ‘70s, O’Brien wrote The Rocky Horror Show to keep himself busy on winter evenings.

O’Brien took a small amount of his unfinished work to Australian director Jim Sharman, who decided he wanted to direct it at the small experimental space upstairs at the Royal Court Theatre in Chelsea in the UK. Sharman had received some success with the original Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar, during which he met O’Brien, who played King Herod for just one performance.

After officially opening on 19 June 1973, the word of mouth for The Rocky Horror Show was huge.

It moved from the Royal Court to several other locations, finally closing on 13 September 1980, after notching up 2,960 performances and winning the 1973 Evening Standard Award for Best Musical.

Harry M. Miller produced the original Sydney

production of Rocky Horror, which opened on 15 April 1974, running in the New Arts Cinema (formerly The Astor, later The Valhalla and now an office building) in Glebe.

It starred Reg Livermore and Kate Fitzpatrick.

After a year and a half in Sydney, the show moved to Melbourne, where it opened at the Regent Palace Theatre in October 1975.

It ran for another 18 months and 458 performances, finally closing in May 1977. The Melbourne production starred Max Phipps as Frank-N-Furter and Joan Brockenshire as Magenta.

The most recent Australian production was in 2015, with Craig McLachlan as Frank and Bert Newton as the narrator.

The Rocky Horror Show has been seen in over 30 countries and been translated into more than 20 languages.

And now it is back for another run in Melbourne and don’t we just love it!

Bente Kahan now lives with her family in Wrocław, Poland, where she has created the Centre for Jewish Culture and Education in that city’s synagogue (the renovated White Stork Synagogue built in 1829.) There she collaborates with Polish and European artists in musical and theatrical productions which focus on tolerance and diversity.

While in Melbourne, Ms Kahan will also hold a Singing in Yiddish masterclass, teaching the art of singing in the former language of European Jews. It’s said that to sing Yiddish songs, you have to be a good story teller. Ms Kahan will reveal the joys and treasures of the many different styles of traditional and more modern Yiddish songs.

“This is the first German-Israeli orchestra under its own name. Our goal is to build bridges between Israel, Germany and other countries, develop relationships, promote cultural exchange, and help counter anti-Semitism,” he said.

“Yachad is the Hebrew word for ‘together’. So, we stand together with Israel and the Jewish people. As a musician, I pay a great attention to such important purpose, especially nowadays, because we still have big problems with anti-Semitism – and not only in Europe.”

Sputnik President Gregory Vaisman said that last year Salyutov had presented

a concert in Melbourne for the Bach Society.

“Salyutov was outstanding – magic on the keyboard - so we became determined to engage him for a Sputnik concert.

When we discovered he was going to be at a festival in New Zealand, we jumped at the chance to entice him to Australia,” Vaisman said.

“Like most of the Russian-speaking Jewish community, we love living in Australia but we miss the concerts that used to be part of everyday life in the USSR. That’s why Sputnik, as well as producing weekly Russian-language broadcasts on Channel 31 for the past 23 years, has made it a mission to produce classical music concerts – and at affordable prices,” he said.

The concert will be recorded for broadcast on Sputnik. Channel 31 and other community TV stations have had another reprieve from the Federal Government – this time until 1 July 2020.

GREAT WINTER SOUPS The Melbourne Jewish Report brings you some of our favourite soup recipes to keep you warm during these cold days BUTTERNUT

There are hundreds of butternut soup recipes around but I guarantee this is the only one youll ever turn to as it is both simple to prepare and delicious.

PS: THIS IS MY BEST SOUP RECIPE EVER!!!

Starting from Scratch - Sharon Glass

Serves 8-10 2 Leeks (white only) sliced thinly 30ml (2T) butter or margarine 1 large butternut 2 large carrots 2 potatoes 2.5l (10 cups) water 80ml (1/2 cup) vegetable or chicken stock powder 250ml (1 cup) cream - optional • Peel and cube butternut, peel and coarsely dice the carrots and potatoes. In a large pot saute the sliced leeks in butter until soft. Add the butternut, carrots, potatoes, water and stock cubes to the leeks in the pot.

• Bring to the boil then simmer on low heat for about 1½ hours. Liquidize the mixture and add cream CHEF’S TIP: Reheat on low heat if necessary. Can be frozen in smaller quantities.

I add cream to smooth the texture of the soup. For a lighter option, I add a little extra stock and only 1/2 cup of yoghurt or cream to the soup

ZUCCHINI, PEA AND MINT

Serves 8-10

2-3 leeks (350g/12oz), white only, sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 8-10 zucchinis (1kg/4oz), sliced 3 cups (500g/1 LB 2 oz) peas 1.5 litres (6 cups) chicken or vegetable 1 bunch mint, leaves only Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

• In a large saucepan over medium heat, fry the leek in the olive oil until soft, then add the zucchini and continue to cook until wilted and soft.

• Add the peas and enough stock to cover, then simmer until all the vegetables are cooked through, about 30 minutes.

• Take off the heat and allow to cool slightly, then add the mint leaves and blend. Season generously with salt and pepper.

Spreading the mitzvot of Sukkot

B&H SUKKOT

We often joke that Jewish events start at JMT or “Jewish Mean Time”, implying that as Jews we follow our own clock where time is not a valuable commodity.

Yet we are a religion that is obsessed with time, where each day, month and yearly cycle follows a well-defined and specifically timed system. A system, where no event is designated by chance or without meaning.

It is well known, based on the opinion of Rabbi Eliezer in Masechet Sukkah (11b), that Sukkot commemorates the miraculous clouds of glory that encircled and protected Bnei Yisroel during their 40-year journey through the wilderness, bathing them with the radiance of the Divine presence. Indeed, Rashi in his commentary adapts this interpretation as the “simple meaning” of the verse.

However, this raises an immediate question.

Why is this commemoration held in the month of Tishrei (Sept/Oct), rather than six months earlier in Nissan (April), the month in which Bnei Yisroel left Egypt and first received the clouds of glory?

The Vilna Gaon explains that Sukkot is actually a commemoration of Hashem’s forgiveness of Bnei Yisroel following the sin of the golden calf, as symbolised by the clouds of glory.

Hashem had removed the miraculous “clouds of glory” on the 17th of Tammuz following the sin of the golden calf leaving the Bnei Yisroel exposed and vulnerable. The nation repented and prayed, and Hashem finally proclaimed His forgiveness of the nation on Yom Kippur, however, the clouds did not return.

Hashem then commanded Bnei Yisroel to donate materials and construct the Mishkan so that He could dwell among His people.

After three days of donations, construction began on the 15th of Tishrei, and Hashem reinstated the “clouds of glory” symbolising His complete forgiveness of Bnei Yisroel.

The Vilna Gaon concludes that Sukkot is thus specifically celebrated on the 15th of Tishrei to commemorate the return of the clouds of glory and Hashem’s complete forgiveness of Bnei Yisroel.

As a result of the pivotal role played by the donations to the Mishkan in achieving complete forgiveness, it has become customary specifically before Sukkot to distribute charity to those in need.

Less Ideal Times For Sleep Coaching In general, it’s best to avoid sleep training during a sleep regression. And, if possible, try to sleep coach before your little one is 18 months old; after 18 months, your toddler’s growing sense of independence and will fullness might make sleep training tougher.

Although there are more ‘ideal’ times to sleep train than others such as before your baby can pull up and stand at the side of the cot, if you and your family are ready to make big changes, I wouldn’t wait just because of your baby or toddler’s age.

Every baby is different and you know your baby best. It may take a bit more time and patience, but it can work! There is always a reason to put off making positive changes in your life whether it’s delaying a diet, because the holidays are near or work is too busy or you put off budgeting because you have too many bills, you can always find a reason to avoid the hard work that sleep training sometimes entails. The first step is the hardest, but I find families are happily surprised when their child adapts to the new routines faster than they anticipated.

As parents, we always want sleep coaching to go as well as possible, right from the start.

That’s why we make sure to wait until our babies are old enough for sleep training (4 months or older), why we carefully select sleep training methods that fit our parenting styles and our babies’ temperaments, why we don’t sleep train during big transitions such as, moving house, milestone, growth spurt or illness, and why we prepare for sleep coaching before we start.

One of the ways to ensure that sleep coaching goes as smoothly as possible is to do it during a window of time in which it will be easier. That’s right — there are times during your baby’s growth and development when she is better prepared for sleep training (and, conversely, times when sleep training may be bit harder).

What are these ‘ideal sleep coaching windows’? We’re glad you asked!

Your Baby’s Ideal Sleep Coaching Windows You can sleep train your baby (or toddler!) any time, of course. But it may be a bit easier if you do it during one of these windows:

The 4-7 month window This is the earliest that parents should start any kind of formal sleep training; it’s also the best time to start, for many families (although not all). Why? Because at this point, your baby is past the 4 month sleep regression, so she’s starting to develop more “adult” sleep patterns. Your baby is also much less mobile at this stage than she’ll be in a few more months, and that lack of mobility makes sleep training a bit easier. Finally, because your baby is still quite young at this point, any sleep associations she may have formed won’t have had time to turn into strong habits.

That means they’ll be easier to change.

The 11-16 month window This isn’t as ideal a time to sleep coach as the 4-7 month window, but if you skip that one, this is the next one to try. Why? Because you’re baby is past the sleep regression that happens at 8/9/10 months, and her sleep patterns should be back to normal. (Although if your baby has never been a great sleeper, her “normal” sleep patterns may be fairly crazy!) Remember,

11 Insightful Tips on Parenting Adult Children From a Psychologist

Parents may find it difficult navigating these changes, and adjusting their behaviours and attitudes, which are so ingrained from years of raising their children. The inability to recognise your adult child’s independence and maturity may put a large strain on the relationship, thus mutual respect must be realised, even if there is not mutual agreement. Striking the right balance albeit sometimes difficult can have wonderful impacts for the entire family.

The following are 11 insightful tips on parenting adult children: 1. Generally, parental approval remains significant to our children even when they are adults. Recognise and compliment their achievements.

2. Don’t expect your adult child to bow to your authority or to appreciate detailed investigation.

3. Realise that sometimes when you “do it for them” you deny them the opportunity to do it for themselves.

4. Be a neutral listener to your adult child.

Be frugal with unsolicited advice and avoid judgement where possible. You remain

entitled to your viewpoints for your life.

5. Be a partner in the relationship – they will appreciate your respect and this will give you the best chance of your children wanting to stay connected to you.

6. Do not make the serious error of making your adult child choose between you and their partner.

7. We developed our own parenting style, allow them to develop theirs.

8. Never undermine your adult child’s

parenting in front of their child 9. It is important to respect your adult child’s right to his or her choices, even if you disagree with those choices.

10. Do not expect your adult children to be responsible for your happiness, and to relieve your loneliness as you age 11. You need to plan for your old age.

Mark Williams acknowledges the incredible spirit of the Jewish Community MACCABI VICTORIA Melbourne, Victoria (July 31, 2018) Maccabi Victoria and the AJAX Football Club, together with Mark Williams, wish to announce that our two year contract with Mark concludes this October, 2018.

AJAX Football Club President Ronnie Lewis said, “In just two seasons with the club, Mark has made a significant impact in his roles as Senior Coach at the AJAX Seniors and Head of Coaching at the AJAX Juniors. At the Senior Football Club, Mark made his mark in the development of our young talent, many of whom have blossomed under his guidance. The training disciplines and team unity instilled by Mark will have an enduring benefit to AJAX. Mark also played an important role in the Women’s team, who benefited greatly from Mark’s AFL experience guiding their football development. Mark’s strong commitment to a development program across both the Senior and Junior Football Cubs has been a game changer, not just for our playing group but for our coaches too. Mark’s engaging and inspiring coaching workshops have facilitated significant improvement in our coaching resources across both our Senior and Junior Clubs. The carefully tailored coaching programs Mark put in place at AJAX will be a lasting legacy for both clubs as we move forward.”

Mark has been instrumental in the roll out of our Maccabi schools program and the delivery of our Maccabi Player Leadership program. Mark has mentored and facilitated the appointment of Directors of Coaching at the Maccabi Athletics, Basketball, Netball and Cricket clubs. He has driven our hugely successful Charidy campaigns and has

been actively engaged in many other areas of our organisation. Mark has engaged and entertained our members, Friends of Maccabi and the wider community on and off the field as a coach, mentor, lecturer and MC. Our organisation has been blessed with a strong history of Boards, Committees, staff, administrators, coaches and volunteers, a group of great leaders who have always put the organisation and community first, and Mark Williams now joins this distinguished group. Mark came to Maccabi Victoria and the AJAX Football Club in October 2016 with an impressive resume as an AFL Team Captain and an AFL Premiership Coach. Mark immediately demanded and delivered excellence on and off the field and represented Maccabi Victoria and the AJAX Football Club with passion, grace, class and true grit. Mark exhibited a tireless work ethic and daily devotion to his players, programs, clubs and our entire organisation.

This October 2018 when Mark closes his screen on that infamous silver Apple laptop, our organisation will be in a much stronger position to face the challenges ahead thanks to Mark Williams. We truly wish Mark all the best in his future endeavours.
