2012 Annual Report Oslo, 14. February 2013 During 2012 our society had 22 indidvidual-, 50 family- and 9 corporate members, in all 81 members representing more than 200 people interested in relations and cultural exchange between Japan and Norway. We have been supported by Norwegian and Japanese members as well as companies with interest in both countries, and have enjoyed good co-operation with other societies and the Embassy of Japan. 1. The board of directors 2012: The board consisted of Anders H. Håan, Keiko Moriguchi, Teruyuki Takahashi, Junya Ishihara, Edvard Stang, Mette K. Johnsen, Tohru Suzuki, Tor Anders Engen, Bjørn Martin Ørvim and Bjørn O. Holta. We held meetings on Januar 18th , March 5th, May 15th, August 14th, and October 16th in the comfortable offices of GIEK and IDEMITSU, arranged by Mr. Edvard Stang and Mr. Takahashi. 2. The Activities of the Society: The events arranged by our society were enjoyed by 177 persons. These were: February 3rd (Fri.)

February 26th (Sun)

The JNS New Year Party was enjoyed at Sato Japanese Dining with a buffet dinner consisting of his sushi and an abundance of wonderful Japanese dishes. 46 members were attending and enjoyed the party until late.

The Ski Day was arranged as before by Keiko Moriguchi at Finnerudhytta in Nordmarka. We were 30 happy paricipants enjoying the winterland in in beautiful weather. The children especially enjoyed their skiing, and as we finsihed the day enjoying a meal of traditional stew and home bakery at the old homestead, the children and the hostess of Finnerud received their well deserved Diploma.

March 28th (Wed.)

With Trond to The Top of Two Continents. Once again Wikborg & Rein generously hosted the event, and we enjoyed the latest of Trond Eilertsens adventure to the highest mountains around the world. Through the jungle to Carstenz Pyramid in New Guinea and to the frozen Vinson Massif 4,892 m. high in Antarctica, Tronds climb was enjoyed by 30 members in the Wikborg & Reins auditorium. September 9th (Sun) The Annual Mushroom Hunt 2012 was arranged as before by Keiko Moriguchi with 47 participants guided by a specialist in edible mushroom in nice weather to Rustadsaga near the scenic Nøklevann lake. October 12th (Fri) “The Shirase Expedition” at Fridjof Nansens Institute. Our member Dr. Ohta proposed this to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the expedition to Antarctica. We were welcomed to the historic home of Fridjof Nansen at ”Polhøgda” (Polar Hill) and enjoyed 3 interesting lectures. First Mr. Claes Lykke Ragner presented the institute, then he and Dr. Ohta took us on a facinating tour of the premises. Polar Historian Dr. Susan Barr presented the expedition in the stately dining room, where Erik Werenskold had painted the entire wall with the legend of “Little Kjersti”. We enjoyed our dinner in the living room in front of the fireplace. 3. Cooperation with other organizations. We wish to support others who are working to further Japan–Norway relations, and we were invited to participate in events arranged by others. Among those were arrangements at “Filmens Hus” in January, “Hamami-day” at Historical Museum in March, lecture by Prof. Kawaguchi at School of Architecture & Design, and “Sound of Japan” at the Opera in connection with “Madame Butterfly”in August. 4. Use of our Society’s Funds. Our expenditures were within our income. Over the years we have accumulated a surplus of NOK. 250.000 producing interest. In 2011 we gave 30.000 to disaster relief in Japan, this year no donation was given. The board is in favor of using the fund to benefit worthy causes. Though the fund is limited, the board will be grateful for ideas from the members.

5. Election of Officers: The terms continue in 2013, and with the exception of our Honorary Treasurer, Bjørn Martin Ørvim, who wish to retire after long service to us, no one is up for re election. Name
