THE LITTLE BOOK OF BIG ACHIEVEMENTS

Client: QinetiQ

Working closely with ace copywriter Peter Reid, we created a pocket sized book for the defence, aerospace and security plc QinetiQ. As an engaging little bit of internal comms, it celebrated the company’s achievements of the year and was given to all their UK employees. It also served as a useful PR piece and informal introduction to clients in reception. Š 2012 Nick Clark Design. All Rights Reserved. email: nick@nickclarkdesign.co.uk

4 NAB CONFERENCE PARTY INVITES

| LAS VEGAS Client: NDS

2. 1. 3.

4. 1. Classic sunglasses were printed with the client logo on the arm and attached to a laminated ‘pass’ to the House of Blues in Las Vegas - the perfect invitation for any Blues Brother/Soul Sister. 2. The studded leather invite to the Harley Davidson Café Las Vegas was made using as many old biker’s jackets as my local charity shops could provide. The remainder were made from new hides bought from Tanner St. in Bermondsey, London. 3. The idea of a mirror-ball pendant invitation doused in aftershave (Old Spice or Brut) seemed the perfect way to evoke 1970s disco fever for those invited to the infamous Studio 54 disco recreated in Las Vegas. 4. I liked the concertina card invite with Bogart and Bergman on the front - it was an invite to a party at the Warner Brothers studio in Las Vegas - with the immortal line... “of all the parties, in all the towns, in all the world, you happen to be invited to ours!” Sometimes copy just leaps out and writes itself! © 2012 Nick Clark Design. HARRY POTTER PRIVATE SCREENING PARTY INVITE (1)

Client: RBS

A combination of heat sensitive and conventional inks was used in this invitation to special screenings of the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 at the IMAX Cinema at the Science Museum in London. As the scroll is held, heat from your hand causes portions of the background to disappear whilst other areas magically emerge to reveal information. A big favourite with the kids! ... AND PRIVATE SCREENING PARTY INVITE (2)

| LONDON ODEON LEICESTER SQUARE

For Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 released in July 2011, the invitation to the film (at the Odeon Leicester Square) and to the party (at One Mayfair) was a handmade broomstick with a concertina fold-out invite tag. I became twig-obsessed during this project to make 400 of these. For anyone who wants to know, the perfect 250mm broomstick is made from rose stems that have been de-thorned and dried and wrinkled by baking in a moderate oven for about an hour. Wrinkle-oh-perfecto! Š 2012 Nick Clark Design. All Rights Reserved. email: nick@nickclarkdesign.co.uk

WORLD CUP MATCH SCREENING EVENTS IN BISHOPSGATE EC2

The main characters in this comic book invitation campaign to matchday screenings of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, were based on two team-mates I play football with. Scripting was easy! Fame at last - Tim (‘Roy’) and Clive (‘Coach’) wrote themselves!

WORLD CUP MATCH SCREENING EVENTS IN BISHOPSGATE EC2

| SOUTH AFRICA 2010

This was a campaign inviting guests to live screening events in the City during the 2010 South Africa FIFA World Cup.TM I was asked to come up with a name and campaign for the venue - a large indoor canopy structure we named ‘Top Corner EC2’, and to get the people there we scripted and illustrated a series of comic magazines with the unfolding story of a soccer star, his girlfriend and an American tycoon intent on buying him and his club. Great fun - shame about the football. © 2012 Nick Clark Design. All Rights Reserved. email: nick@nickclarkdesign.co.uk

2006 WORLD CUP PACKAGE CASE STUDY | HOSPITALITY INVITATION CAMPAIGN

Work on this invitation campaign to the 2006 FIFA World CupTM in Germany began in the early summer of 2005. I sketched out 3 possible routes and the idea of a custom made subbuteo team featuring a player from the past ten winners Bobby Moore (1966), Pelé (1970), Beckenbauer (1974)... with a space left for the winner of 2006 - was chosen. This became the centrepiece of the campaign designed to captivate the target market in childhood memory, with an invitation to be a part of ‘history in the making’! The package also included a printed felt ‘pitch’; an authentic, 00 scale football; a 16 page ‘passport’ style guide & match schedule for each of 9 German cities; and as a ‘thank you’ after the final, a single Italian player from the winning 2006 team, to fill the space in the original box. Next page: I’m a great advocate of showing my ideas as sketches rather than computer generated visuals which can have a habit of appearing too ‘finished’ and closed to further suggestion. With a sketch one can share the depth of an idea with a client, and add to it, with all the little asides and lateral tangents that bring the idea to life. It’s also a quicker, more fluid way to collaborate and visualise the final campaign overview. © 2012 Nick Clark Design. All Rights Reserved. email: nick@nickclarkdesign.co.uk

UEFA 2008TM FOOTBALL HOSPITALITY INVITATION

Client: RBS

Through the months proceeding the tournament, invitees received small sticker packages with match and itinerary details to put into their retro hard back sticker collection book. It was great fun to write and design this, keeping faithful to the language and graphics of over 50 years ago, it gave the excuse for me to include things like a spot-the-ball competition, a hall of fame gallery and an ‘ear-witness account’ diagram taken from Raymond Glendenning’s commentary of an Italy v England match played in 1948 courtesy of Teach Yourself Soccer by F.N.S Creek. 1000 ORIGAMI SWANS... CASE STUDY | A COMPLETE PACKAGE FOR A CHARITY BALL

The Dare to Dream Ball held in March 2009 at Old Billingsgate, London raised over £500,000 for children’s charities in the UK and abroad. I was able to help the St. James’s Place Foundation and Icon Interiors not only in concepting the theme and writing much of the copy for the literature, but also in the design and production of all the communications and graphics involved. This included everything from a foil blocked ‘save the date’ card, to the main invitation, the brochure, the website design... even the menus, raffle tickets and place cards.

CAFE ROYAL. SEVEN DEADLY SINS THEMED EDIBLE PARTY INVITATION

Historically there is a specific colour and punishment associated to each sin. This was reflected in the flavours and presentation I chose for each chocolate in this lavish felt covered box and with the invitation wording printed on the crinkly overlay. eing, as I am; namely a squeezing,

wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching,

covetous, man; hard and sharp as flint,

from which no steel had ever struck out

generous fire; secret, and self-contained,

and solitary as an oyster; It gives me NO

PLEASURE at all to disclose to you that

generosity of a fathomless quantity has been extended

to you by the powers that be, who, in their infinite

misjudgment of prudence and propriety becoming their trade, would rather wish to celebrate the

season of good-will with you at a

musical performance called after my

name - SCROOGE !

Yet worse, this wanton

wastefulness and gaiety (to

which you are welcome) will

cost you but not one farthing!

Left: The Winter of 2002 was a sad time. We wanted to say “Christmas; baaa-humbug!”so we did using traditional sweets and the use of a tin that makes a sheep noise when it’s turned upside down... BAAAAAAAAAH!!! In 2005, with a ready source of giant humbugs found from doing the Scrooge job for Barclays, I couldn’t resist getting them again for my own Christmas mailing. THE I

N

CL ICK AR

VIT

AT I O

Based in West London, I have been a self-employed graphic designer since the age of 22 working for myself directly with my own clients.

N

I've rarely promoted myself. I tend to get passed on by my clients or introduced to new ones when a contact moves on to a new company. I seem to have become a bit of a specialist in recent years; creating themed invitations to large corporate events, charity balls and hospitality at major sporting occasions. Many of these have been for my main client; RBS, but that is not all I do by any means. I've also delivered major creative projects with Adidas, Abbey, Barclays, BT... just to name a few from my past. I've produced ad campaigns, created new identities and 48 sheet nationals; I've designed interiors, named products and produced suites of literature; all in my own right. I've never freelanced before. And I'm the creative one when it goes online.

I am always honoured when I'm asked to help communicate an idea. I think that's what creative design is really; helping a client say what they want to say in ways that make it memorable. Creating little moments of magic along the way. At the start of a project or pitch I like to breathe life into a brief by sketching out the good, possibly bad and frankly sometimes stupid ideas I have on a layout pad first; the words, the contexts and the culture... the paradigms, syntax and synonyms of things if I'm being clever. I like the tangents and associations that happen in this process and my clients seem to really engage with the ideas they show. Clients love my sketches. And I love what I do. I hope that comes across in the pages of this portfolio. If you think we can work together in some way it’ll be good; just call me on +44 (0)7860 86 00 00 or email: nick@nickclarkdesign.co.uk
