eath has more meanings than the obvious literal one. It could infer rebirth, end of an era and possibly even the abject refusal to acknowledge circumstances or conditions. The Death Of Architecture exhibition aims to explore ideas that relate to the way we build and draw attention to the shortcomings that plague the process and outcomes of architecture in India. It is designed to provoke and stimulate, aiming to engage with the diaspora of the design fraternity and look for meaningful answers to difficult questions. The exhibition that opened in Mumbai on the 23 rd of Feb, had 13 firms across the country reflect about this idea of “death” and the direction in which we are currently headed. This collective, that comprises firms from across the country, had over the past six months researched ideas and themes that they believed needed to be questioned and discussed. Concerns that plague the city, the practice of architecture and the future of our cities.

None of the work being presented is their own and neither is it an attempt to state definite positions, instead they are studies that merit deliberation and discussion, which they hope to have by visiting 15 cities across India over the course of the year. The opening of the exhibition in Mumbai brought together a room full of thinking architects at The Nehru Science Centre on the 23rd February. As part of the proceedings there was a dialogue with the extremely reclusive architect Ved Segan. A man credited with the creation of Mumbai’s Prithvi Theatre, the 200 seater jewel of modern architecture that resides in the suburbs of Mumbai. Segan was a young man, when continued on page 2

Each space they work on is thoughtfully curated with the common people and everyday lives in mind
The foundation brings together renowned Indian and international artists to transform city spaces through art and add a pop of colour in the concrete jungle we reside in today. They received an overwhelming response for their project in Mumbai this year with the Mahim Art District being their most recent project where they successfully transformed the image of Dharavi by making it India’s second largest open-air walk through art district. Each space they work on is thoughtfully curated with the common people and everyday lives in mind. From depicting the lives of the Koli women to murals of Gandhi; they have explored a plethora of options to colour the city in. In the recent past, they successfully create a temporary cultural hub at Sassoon
Dock in collaboration with the local fishing community which became an instant hit. They bring together a clique of creative minds to create content, art, manage events and assemble resources to work on their project sites. The foundation actively encourages the general public with a flair for art to volunteer and participate in their activities leading to a constant buzz in every city they work in. Apart from Mumbai, the foundation has also taken up projects in Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Their ultimate objective has always been to bring art to the people and not confine it to only certain sections of society. Art for all, is thus, their motto. With a view to keep the design as vernacular and simple as possible, the traditional Nepalese window and door frames technique have been used for construction. Shigeru Ban + (VAN) architects, have included modular wooden frames as structural members, which are connected to form a wall system, in-filled with brick rubble. This form of construction speeds up the building process, as the wooden frames can be assembled quickly with the use of locally available materials and simple construction methods. Consequently, with faster construction, the school becomes accessible immediately as soon as the roof is secured to the structure. As the project demanded a simple and functional design to sustain the harsh weather conditions, and at the same time prove to be convenient for the students’ use, the same wall system has been repeated to form a row of classrooms. With three class rooms measuring 86 sq. m each, it has now become an adept school for the students. The school is also envisioned to be used as a shelter in the event of a future disaster.

Taj Inspired Copper Enamel Range from Baaya Design Shibani Jain, Founder & CEOBaaya Design, was always inspired by the resplendent marble inlay work on the walls of the Taj Mahal. She and her team of designers took on the challenge to bring the rich colours seen in the inlay work, into a totally different and equally rich craft- that of copper enamelling. The artisan follows a comprehensive process using glass powder colours and copper wire. Circular plates or bowls are created on a dye to a precise depth. The wire work is fastened through an initial process called flux work. The wire work is pre- cut to create
the motifs. On a stencil. Once cooled, coloured glass powder is applied to the surface using a paint brush and the whole piece is re- fired to create the final enamelled piece. It is cleaned with an acidic solution and then biffed. The final pieces show off the rich glass enamel colours and motifs. According to Mrs. Shibani Jain, “This range is perfectly suited for living rooms, receptions and lobbies, conference rooms, etc. It’s a great blend of traditional skills and contemporary design”. THE INSIDE TRACK March 2018
ubai, a country that is home to mammoth sized structures, extravagant facilities and magnificent skyscrapers, has been enticing visitors from across the world who are drawn to its shores to imbibe its grandeur and experience the myriad of its feats and achievements. What better way to show off its extravagance than to frame it? That’s pretty much what the team at Donis Design in collaboration with the Dubai Municipality did. Rising 150 meters from Zabeel Park, Dubai Frame is “The World’s Largest Picture Frame” that overlooks the entire city and is worth Dhs 160 million. The city’s latest landmark features two transparent towers; each of which is 150 meters tall and are connected by a bridge extending up to 93 meters in length. The distinctive architecture of the building allows visitors to savour a 360 degrees’ view of both old and new Dubai. On one side, the structure frames the iconic landmarks on Shaikh Zayed Road like
A City Framed Dubai frame is the city’s latest landmark built to resemble an enormous picture frame. BY vandana krishnan

Burj Khalifa, Emirates Towers and the Dubai Fountain to name a few. While on the other side, the visitors are given a contrasting glimpse of ‘old Dubai’ with the views of Deira, Umm Hurair and Karama. The Dubai Frame was conceptualized to offer panoramic views of the skyline while framing the city’s breathtaking backdrop and awe-inspiring coastline. The design was selected as the winner of the 2009 ThyssenKrupp Elevator International Award from 926 proposals where participants from all over the world were invited to submit an emblem that would promote “the
new face for Dubai”. The project is an undertaking of Dubai Tourism. On ultimately winning the prize, Fernando Donis, the principal architect at Donis Design, decided to frame the city that is “already full of emblems”. So instead of building a massive structure, the purpose of his proposal was to build a void of 150 meters by 105 meters to cautiously frame the development of the past, current and future Dubai. The frame is fabricated out of glass, steel, aluminium and reinforced concrete. While the construction commenced in 2013,
it opened for the general public on 1st January 2018. Apart from the views at the Sky Deck; the frame also comprises a Dubai Past Gallery that describes the project and tells the story of city’s evolution, a Dubai Future Gallery that is supported by augmented reality activated screens, by which the visitors can identify buildings and landmarks and a glass floor 48 floors above the ground waits for the brave, a Social Media Wall and a Souvenir shop to engage its visitors.
