Baking

Fresh Cherry & Almond Cake This delicious fruity cake can be served warm as a dessert or cold as a classic afternoon tea cake. Serves 8 Ready in 1 hour 40 mins + cooling time

Ingredients

1

Preheat the oven to 170C, fan 150C, gas mark 3. Grease a 20cm round deep cake tin with the extra butter and line the base and sides with baking paper.

2

Place the butter and caster sugar in a large mixing bowl and using a hand-held electric mixer beat together until very pale and creamy. Gradually pour in the eggs, beating well after each addition. If the mixture starts to separate slightly, stir in a spoonful of the flour.

3

Sift over the rest of the flour and fold in gently with a metal spoon. Toss the cherries into half of the ground almonds, and fold into the mixture with the rest of the ground almonds. Spoon into the prepared cake tin and gently level the surface.

4

Bake in the preheated oven for 55 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes, until the cake is risen, golden and a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack to cool.

5

Whilst the cake is still cooling make the icing: sift the icing sugar into a bowl and stir in 2-3 tbsp warm water and mix to make a thin icing. Spoon the icing over the warm cake, allowing some to drizzle down the side. Decorate with extra cherries and serve warm or cold.

• 225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing

• 225g golden caster sugar • 225g self-raising flour • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 300g fresh cherries, pitted and halved

• 100g ground almonds • 150g icing sugar • Extra fresh cherries, to decorate

TIP The fresh cherries will mostly sink during baking but this is perfectly normal, giving a moist fruity layer at the base of the cake. It’s best eaten within 2 days of baking.

Books

A Life Like No Other Take a trip into another time and another life. Or stay in your own life and be inspired by ideas of self-improvement. This month’s reads will certainly make you pause to reflect. The Familiars Stacey Halls

Louis & Louise Julie Cohen

Micro Living Derek ‘Deek’ Diedricksen

1612 is a dangerous time to be a woman in Northern England, as King James has declared war on witches. Fleetwood is 17 and pregnant for the fourth time. Her other ended in miscarriage. Desperate not to miscarry this child or lose her own life in childbirth, she turns to a local midwife, Alice Grey. When Alice gets accused of witchcraft, Fleetwood has to decide how far she’ll go to save her friend. Loosely based on the Pendle witch trials, this is a gripping, atmospheric page-turner.

A baby is born in 1970s Maine, USA. In one reality she’s a girl – Louise; in the other, a boy – Louis. Both have the same friends, the same interests and the same ambitions. Both flee from their hometown after one fateful night that changes everything. Thirteen years later, Lou’s mother is dying, so he/she returns to face the past. Original, thought-provoking and highly enjoyable, Louis & Louise is perfect for book clubs.

This book takes the concept of downsizing to the extreme. Many of the 40 homes featured are smaller than 150 square feet. From a refurbished Airstream to a treehouse, what these homes lack in space, they more than make up for in character. The book includes floorplans, advice and lots of lust-worthy photographs. Whether you’re thinking of building your own tiny home, want some tips to make the most of smaller rooms or just fancy taking a peek into how other people live, Micro Living is for you.

Voices of Powerful Women Zoe Sallis When Maya Angelou calls something a ‘fascinating collection’, you know you’re in for a treat and Voices of Powerful Women certainly doesn’t disappoint. Zoe Sallis interviewed 40 women for her book, including Judi Dench, Tracey Emin, Benazir Bhutto and Mariane Pearl. Each one gives us a glimpse into what made her who she is today. You’ll learn what inspires these women, what angers them, who they admire and what advice they want to pass on to the next generation.

The Energy Plan James Collins Nutritionist James Collins is a world leader in the field of performance nutrition. He’s guided the eating habits of Olympic athletes and premier sports stars. His first book, The Energy Plan, is not about cutting out food groups, quick fix diets or denial. Instead, it’s about fuelling your body so it performs better and you feel fitter, have more energy and can fight off illnesses. The Energy Plan is well worth a read, whether you’re training for a marathon or just want to avoid the 3pm energy slump.

The Honey Bus Meredith May With a depressed single mother who could barely get out of bed, Meredith relied on her grandfather for love and solace. She also found another avenue for learning life’s lessons – her grandfather’s bees. Through the hive, Meredith learned about family, loyalty, self-sacrifice and resilience. A thought-provoking memoir.

PRESS RELEASE.. PRESS RELEASE.. PRESS RELEASE.. PRESS RELEASE..

Feltonfleet announces exciting future development plans Feltonfleet School in Cobham is set to begin exciting developments in response to overwhelming demand for its Pre-Prep places. Over the next three years, the co-educational Preparatory school for children aged 3 – 13 will begin a phased increase in the number of places available in the Pre-Prep, starting next academic year.  Additional places in Reception and Year 2 will be available from September 2019, and by September 2020 the Pre-Prep will have a two-form entry. This will increase the size of the Pre-Prep from 80 to 160 places.

Shelley Lance, Headmistress of Feltonfleet School commented, “We are excited to be entering this next phase of our development, which means that even more families will be able to benefit from the excellent start we offer our youngest pupils. Central to the plan is our desire to retain our special ethos with its emphasis on core values of individual care, community and opportunity.”

An integral part of the development will be a newly refurbished building, entirely dedicated to the Year 2 children. This will give the pupils increased access to the extensive facilities and further specialist teaching available on the main campus, enabling an even smoother transition towards Year 3 and the Lower School.

In response to the announcement, a Year 1 parent said, “We are really thrilled with the plans for Year 2 House along with all other school-wide developments. It’s so very clear how Feltonfleet strives to offer the best possible experience for our children, we firmly believe they couldn’t be in more capable hands. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better...”

In addition to the growth of the Pre-Prep, ambitious plans have been approved to enhance the facilities for Science, Technology and Music in the Prep School. Further Science Labs, a new Technology hub for Digital Learning and Design & Technology, and a specialist Music School are all features of a project designed to enrich the opportunities for pupils in these areas.

The next Open Morning will take place on Friday 3rd May 9.00–11.00am. Families are able to view the school by arrangement or attend an Open Morning.

Relief from Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is available when a person sells their main residence. It has also been available where a property had been a main residence at some point during ownership and then became a rental property. In October last year the Chancellor announced changes to this relief. Property owners planning to sell their property in the next 12 months should be alert to these changes. The sale date of their property could potentially result in a higher tax bill. Lettings Relief Lettings relief enables a gain up to a maximum of £40,000 per owner to be free from tax, if the home has been your main residence at some point and subsequently is rented out. From April 2020, however, lettings relief will only be available where an owner and tenant are in shared occupation. For property owners who aren’t residing at the property during the lettings period, the removal of lettings relief is likely to inflate their CGT bill from the sale. Basic-rate taxpayers pay 18% on gains they make when selling

property, while higher and additional-rate taxpayers pay 28%. Final Period Exemption Another change affecting tax relief on property sale gains is in relation to the Final Period Exemption. Currently, Private Residence Relief (PPR) can be claimed against CGT for the final 18 months of a property owner’s residence, regardless of what the property is used for. This was initially introduced to address the longer time properties were taking to sell. If the property owner has left the home to go into a care home, the relief period is 36 months. In April 2020, however, the final period exemption will reduce from 18 months to 9 but the 36 months Final Period Exemption for those entering a care home will remain. Prompter Payments of Capital Gains Tax CGT on gains on disposal of residential property after 5 April 2020 will need to be paid within 30 days of completion – rather than on 31 January after the end of the tax year.

Summary If you are looking to sell your property soon it is worth bearing in mind the changes that come in during April 2020. They may have an impact on the amount of Capital Gains Tax relief you can claim. Do take professional advice and plan the timing of the sale in order to make the most of the current reliefs before they change.

The Smith Pearman team are now part of Shipleys in Godalming and are happy to help with any tax queries you have.

ST MARTIN’S CHURCH EAST HORSLEY KT24 6RL

PART OF THE HORSLEY, OCKHAM & DOWNSIDE GROUP MINISTRY

From the Rector... Dear Friends I’d like to think that a sign of a healthy church is that it is always creating new things, new ways to express our love of God and new ways to engage with the community. That’s why I was very pleased that we were able to launch our new bus service just after Christmas. Getting elderly people and those without cars to church can be challenging but a number of people are making use of the bus service (10.10am outside Quaich). A few weeks ago we reached an agreement with Thatchers to offer free parking for Sunday worshippers and a 10% discount on Sunday lunch. Horsley Towers are also kind to us and offer a very nice bar and restaurant. We are blessed to be surrounded by two very good hotels. The Horsley, Ockham and Downside Group Ministry continues to work well together. We have a full programme for Holy Week and Easter Sunday and we are delighted to be presenting Tenors UnLimited for the third time at St Martin’s on 22nd June at 7.00pm. Before that and hopefully in time for this edition of The Horsley Directory, is the news that Ellie Ford and Night House are performing at St Martin’s on Friday 5th April at 7.30pm. Entrance fee on the day is £6.00 – do look them up on youtube! The season of Easter is itself a reminder that God is creating new things all the time. In Holy Week we will be remembering Jesus’ journey to the cross and on Easter Sunday starting at 6.00am (!) we will proclaim that Jesus is risen. It’s an outrageous proclamation which has changed the lives of billions of people for over 2000 years. I do hope that you will get on the bus and join us.

Childcare Optons Not sure of the difference between a childminder and a nanny? Think au pairs are only for the wealthy? Keep reading…

Nanny

Au pair

Nurseries provide day care for a number of children in one setting. Most can look after children from a few weeks old up to school age. Your child will be with others their own age, so is likely to make friendships that could continue into school. Larger nurseries may have different rooms for different age groups. Smaller nurseries often have all ages together, which means your child may have the stability of being looked after by the same person for the whole of their time there. Prices tend to vary between £25 and £60 a day.

Nannies usually provide childcare in a family’s own home. Some live in; some don’t. Prices tend to start from around £10 an hour (depending on experience and qualifications) and you can often ‘nanny share’ with another family. A nanny will usually be considered an employee, which means you need to factor in extra paperwork and costs, such as pensions, sick pay and so on. There are, however, companies such as Nanny Tax, which can deal with that side of things for you. The key benefit to having a nanny is similar to the benefit of having a childminder – you and your child can build a close bond with one person, and your child will likely enjoy lots of trips out.

Au pairs are usually aged 17 to 27 and want to travel to the UK to live with a host family temporarily. Some au pairs offer up to 30 hours of childcare a week, while others just offer before and after school care, or an extra pair of hands while parents are around. According to the service Find Au Pair (www. findaupair.com), an au pair’s salary can start from just £70 a week, plus meals. Many au pairs are only able to work for a family for a few months, but they do give older children an opportunity to learn about a different culture and language.

Childminder Childminders provide childcare in their own home. A childminder may work for several families, so your child is likely to have other children to play with. Childminders have to be registered and insured, and attend regular training courses. Prices usually start at around £4 an hour per child. The main benefit of choosing a childminder over a day nursery is that your child can form a close attachment to one adult and will usually go on regular outings. However, if the childminder is sick or on holiday, you’ll have to make your own arrangements for cover.

Finding a childcare provider The website www.childcare. co.uk has a wealth of information on the different options open to you and what you’ll need to consider (such as visas for au pairs). You can search for childcare providers in your area and read reviews. Nurseries, childminders and some nannies need to be registered with Ofsted, Care Inspectorate Wales or the Scottish Care Inspectorate, so you should be able to check reports before you commit.

The dangers of heatstroke Summer can be a great time to help your dog become fit and healthy, particularly if they’ve become a little sluggish over the winter months. Warm weather and long days are made for dog walking, but is it too hot for your dog to exercise?

Helping your dog avoid heatstroke Heatstroke is a serious health issue for dogs that can affect their internal organs and cause catastrophic damage very quickly. It’s a condition you need to watch out for in summer, particularly when exercising your dog. Controlling their environment when exercising is crucial during the summer – only walking them in the early morning or late evening is a good way to reduce the chances of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. What are the symptoms of heatstroke? • Breathing rapidly or panting heavily • Red gums • An agitated or anxious expression • Disorientation • Vomiting • Diarrhoea

Only walking in the morning and evening during the summer is a good way to reduce the chance of heat stroke for your dog.

Exercising your dog in the summer It’s important to avoid strenuous exercise when it’s hot outside, and to be vigilant for respiratory distress or any other indications that your dog is struggling to deal with the heat. Take plenty of water with you as dogs can become dehydrated very quickly in the heat and try to walk or exercise in shaded areas so they have a chance to cool down. Summer requires additional vigilance when exercising your dog, but you can keep them safe and healthy with a little extra care.

TEMA

L

Discovered in the mid-19th century, it lies within the Tikal National Park listed by UNESCO for both its natural and cultural wonders. The site greets you with an ancient reservoir, one of 20 or so designed to capture rainwater, a couple of museums and a visitors’ centre, but beyond the entrance there is no commercialisation, just pristine jungle bristling with remains. Howler monkeys swing in the trees, toucans splash colour here and there and you might come across tarantula and rattle snakes or the odd crocodile basking by the water. Fortunately jaguars are likely to keep away. The main circular trail meanders for miles and guides will keep everyone safe as they point out some of the 185 species of trees, including the lofty ceiba, the national emblem, the incense

In the north-east corner of Guatemala, between Belize and Mexico, Tikal is an awesome site, the once powerful city of Maya rulers, now smothered in virgin forest.

tree, still precious for Maya rituals, and the sturdy Ya wood once used for lintels, at its best when cut during the full moon. The city was founded around 600 BC, and after modest beginnings the Tikal rulers established their dynasty, growing from strength to strength as they developed agriculture, religion and trade, built monuments and causeways and encouraged culture and arts. By 750 AD Tikal had 100,000 residents, but by 900 AD dwindling resources and warfare had brought its demise. Yet sizeable vestiges have been unearthed while others are still buried in the surrounding rainforest. According to experts, this is the most important city of the Classic Period in Maya civilisation. “Walk slowly,” say the guides, “listen to the silence” and as you gaze at the remains of palaces, the game courts, the unusual Twin Pyramids or the Lost World where ancestors observed the Milky Way, the old stones release the most powerful vibes across the land. Temples rise, unperturbed by the passing of time, from the old Inscription Temple to the Jaguar Priest, the most recent, built around 810 AD.

Most impressive is the Grand Plaza, the heart of the city, with its acropolis for residential areas and royal tombs and several temples where important religious events were held. Among them are the Temple of Masks and the Great Jaguar Temple, the true icon of Guatemala, protecting the tomb of the famous Jasaw. A scene carved in sapodilla wood shows the victorious ruler carried back to the city on his people’s shoulders.

“Walk slowly,” say the guides, “listen to the silence” and as you gaze at the remains of palaces But away from it all and wonderfully quiet is Temple IV, also known as the ‘Two-headed Snake’, erected around 745 AD and the highest at 65 metres. Climb to the top – steps are carefully concealed around the back – and the jungle takes your breath away, a dense ocean of greenery spreading as far as you can see. Mysterious sounds echo in the breeze, shadows vanish in the undergrowth and, rising eerily above the trees, the old Maya temples bear witness to a distant past.
