Contemporary Compositions This month’s collection of recent releases includes modern fairy tales, a psychological thriller and historical fiction at its finest. The Toymakers Robert Dinsdale It’s 1917 and pregnant teenager Cathy Wray seeks sanctuary at a London toy store. She soon discovers that these toys are unlike any she’s ever seen before. There’s a clockwork dog that’s devoted to his master, paper trees that grow from seed, and toy soldiers that wage battles on their own. Cathy learns to call The Emporium home, and the people who own it her family. But then the First World War breaks out, and nothing will ever be quite as magical again. The Toymakers is a must for fans of Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus.

The Sacrifice Box Martin Stewart Five friends make a pact one summer’s day, when they find an old stone box in the woods. Several years later, one of them breaks the rules and dark forces are unleashed, including a killer teddy bear, zombie crows and a demonic puppet. The five must put aside their differences and come together to appease the box before it’s too late. Aimed at teens and young adults, The Sacrifice Box is a winning blend of coming of age drama and supernatural horror.

Happiness For Humans P.Z. Reizen Romantic comedy meets sci-fi in this enjoyable novel. Aiden’s creators know that he’s an intelligent piece of software, which can read books in under a millisecond, review films and tell jokes. What they don’t know is that Aiden has developed feelings, or that his favourite person is Jen, who helps develop Aiden’s conversational skills. Aiden decides Jen would be happier in a relationship, so sets her up on a date. But Aiden isn’t the only intelligent AI on the loose, and not all of them have such good intentions.

White Chrysanthemum Mary Lynn Bracht Approximately 200,000 young Korean women and girls were enslaved by the Japanese army in the Second World War. Thousands of these ‘comfort women’ died from the abuse they experienced. White Chrysanthemum tells the fictional story of 15 year old Hana, who is kidnapped after stepping in to rescue her little sister, Emi. Several decades later, we meet Emi in her desperate last attempt to find out what happened to Hana all

those years ago. While White Chrysanthemum is, at times, painful to read, it’s impossible to put down and a must-read for lovers of historical fiction. The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night – Jen Campbell This collection of modern fairy tales is dark, twisted and beautiful, and range from the macabre to the heart-warming. You’ll read about a mermaid in an aquarium, a boy who suspects his sister has two souls, and a man who uses animal hearts to keep his girlfriend’s love. There are elements of wellknown myths and fairy stories, but this collection is more Brothers Grimm than Disney. Captivating.

Everything Is Lies Helen Callaghan Sophia arrives home one day to find her mother dead and her father lying in a pool of blood. The police are convinced it’s a clear case of attempted murdersuicide, and Sophia is the only one who can prove her mother’s innocence. As she delves into her mother’s past, she uncovers tales of a secret cult, and learns more about her family, and herself, than she could ever have imagined. A tense psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns.

Cajun Meatballs Mince always makes a great speedy supper – here lean pork mince is spiced up with Cajun seaasoning and rolled into meatballs.

Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes

To make the meatballs, place the pork, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, Cajun seasoning and coriander in a food processor. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and process for a few seconds until thoroughly mixed. Alternatively, mix well with clean hands.

Shape the mixture into 24 meatballs. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the meatballs for 10-15 minutes until browned and cooked through. Shake the pan frequently to turn the meatballs.

Meanwhile, place the couscous in a large bowl and pour over enough boiling water to just cover the grains. Leave to soak for about 10 minutes until all the liquid has been absorbed. Separate the grains by stirring with a fork. Add the onion, tomatoes, coriander and olive oil and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Divide the hot couscous between four serving bowls. Thread the cooked meatballs onto metal skewers and serve on top of the couscous.

• 450g lean minced pork • ½ red onion, peeled and finely chopped

• 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed

• 25g fresh white breadcrumbs

• 2 tsp Cajun seasoning (see tip)

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 1 tbsp freshly chopped coriander

• 1 tbsp sunflower oil FOR THE COUSCOUS

• 225g couscous

• ½ red onion, finely chopped

• 8 sun-blush tomatoes, drained and chopped

Cajun seasoning is a spicy blend of spices, chilli powder and herbs such as thyme and oregano. You’ll find it on the spice racks in the supermarket.

• 3 tbsp freshly chopped coriander

• 2 tbsp olive oil

What Should You Feed Your New Puppy?

A friendly and reliable company covering all aspects of Groundworks, Construction and Landscape Gardening Twenty years experience in the industry NVQ qualified

Fully insured

Free quotations Puppies require a special diet with extra calories and nutrients to help them develop strong muscles and bones. It’s easy to overfeed them when they’re young, as their stomachs are very small, so regular feeding throughout the day is better than giving them one or two larger meals.

07871 051661 / 01372 458616

But what types of food should you offer your puppy, and how do you know how much to feed them?

Complete dry foods Dry food can provide complete nourishment for your puppy, but you should buy the best you can afford. Although ‘premium’ brands are more expensive, you don’t need to use as much per meal as with the cheaper brands, due to their enhanced nutritional content. If your puppy doesn’t like dry food because it’s too hard, you can soak the biscuits in warm water for a few minutes to make them easier to chew.

Wet foods Tinned or pouched puppy foods are available in a wide range of flavours, but it’s advisable to choose one that your pet can easily digest, such as chicken and rice. As with the dry food, you can also buy ‘complete’ wet foods for your puppy, which are nutritionally balanced and highly beneficial for their development. Whether you feed your puppy wet food, dry biscuits, or a combination of the two, portion size is extremely important whilst they’re developing. Always check the instructions on the packet or tin, or ask your vet for guidance – they’ll also be able to keep a regular check on your puppy’s growth.

The Horsley Neighbourhood Connections: Helping People Live Well

Connecting YOU to activities, people and services in Horsley As our situations and needs change it can be difficult to know where to look for information and help. Neighbourhood Connections is a community project that aims to help people live well in the Horsley’s by offering a listening ear and providing information and guidance on support services, statutory and voluntary, as well as local activity and interest groups. It is based in the Horsley Medical Practice. Booking an appointment: Neighbourhood Connections is based in Horsley Medical Practice and is normally available on Wednesday afternoons between 2.00pm and 4.00pm. Appointments can be booked by calling 01483 284151 and asking for a Neighbourhood connections appointment.

Our volunteers can face a very wide range of questions; for example:

Many of the answers are in the recent publication “Living and Ageing well in the Horsleys”

• how can I get transport to my dentist now I no longer drive?

Recruiting volunteers

• can you tell me how to access the local food bank and provide food bank vouchers? • can you help me fill in forms for a blue badge or attendance allowance? • who can I trust to provide honest advice on making my bathroom safe? • how can I find a reliable gardener? • is there an activity group in Horsley that shares my interests (and if so how can I join it)? • where can I get support for my relative or neighbour who suffers from dementia?

After operating for nearly a year we now urgently need new volunteers to help keep the service fully open and cope with the increasing demand for appointments. Would you like to be involved in a service that provides information and guidance on support services in Horsley? Would you be willing to give up half a day a month to help ensure that the service can remain open throughout the year? Full training will be provided. The Horsleys Community Bus Association – Supporting the elderly in our villages Our villages has a charity that operates a volunteer driven minibus that enables the elderly who can no longer drive to go shopping, to socialise and take part in community activities. The Horsleys Community Bus Association is a charity created in 1999 to provide transport to the shops for the elderly residents of our villages, to help them to maintain their independence and to socialise. Initially it used a minibus that Surrey County Council had previously operated to support their residents of the sheltered housing at St Martins Close and the care home that is now Limegrove. The minibus provided a service to these residents but this was quickly extended to support all the elderly in our area. Minibuses that provide community transport are not classed as public service vehicles and operate under a permit provided by the local authority. They can be driven by volunteer drivers and currently HCBA has over 20 drivers. HCBA’s minibus is used for weekly and fortnightly shopping trips to various local supermarkets and towns. Passengers pre-book the service and are collected from their homes in the Horsleys, Effingham and Ockham. Having a blue disabled badge, the minibus can use disabled parking bays right outside most destinations. After shopping, the drivers return the passengers to their homes, generally helping them with their shopping to their front door. Because it is a community service #

vehicle HCBA cannot formally charge a fare, but it does ask for a voluntary contribution to the operating costs, typically £2.50 for a return trip. Additionally the minibus has scheduled drives enabling groups of the elderly to attend local community meetings and activities and to socialise. It is also used for one-off outings, for occasional group days out in the summer, for Christmas shopping trips and to enable the elderly to attend village functions. HCBA also regularly enables residents of the local care homes, many of whom used to live in Horsley, to have outings with their carers to the countryside or a cafe. Since inception the minibus has been renewed every 5 years or so, using a combination of accumulated contributions from passengers plus Surrey County Council and parish council grants. Recently HCBA was very lucky to benefit from a 2014 government initiative to supply 300 minibuses to community organisations. HCBA’s then

Chairman, Kim MacKenzie, learnt of this scheme and applied for one of these minibuses, which arrived in early 2017. Besides using the latest low emissions hi-tech diesel engine, it is designed for disabled access, specifically being fitted with steps with handrails and a lift for passengers in wheelchairs or with very limited mobility. This new bus will enable HCBA to operate for many years to come. HCBA was proud to welcome Bamber Gascoigne to inaugurate the new bus last summer and to meet a few of its regular passengers. Although services are pretty full, HCBA will always try to accommodate new passengers HCBA needs more drivers. Most people have the required licence, training is provided and drivers typically drive for a morning or afternoon every 4 weeks or so. For more information about HCBA’s services or about driving for them please contact Kelvin Hayes on 01483 283314.

St Martin’s Church EAST HORSLEY KT24 6RL

From the Rector... 2018 promises to be another busy year for us at St Martin’s. We’ve just finished a major refurbishment of the Canterbury Rooms which includes our church hall and kitchen (the building is behind the church). It is available for hire at reasonable rates. We are going to continue using it for activities like Spiritual Cinema, the Family Film Club, Hear Here (our hearing aid clinic), the Alpha Course and plans are beginning to emerge for us to host a regular community lunch. Once again, we will be inviting you to a series of concerts including the return of Tenors UnLimited in July. We will also be screening the Royal Wedding and FA Cup Final as well as England’s matches during the World Cup Finals. Our family services (1st Sunday of the month at 10.30am) are proving popular. Teddy Bear Service, Pet Service and Christingle already in the diary! We are excited that ‘Smarties’ our children’s church will take place weekly on Sundays at 10.30am on the other Sundays. The Group Ministry (The Horsley and Ockham) will be holding joint services and other initiatives as we work closely together. We will be launching a new website during the early part of the year and work will begin on our new organ project and further improvements to the church. All that we do at St Martin’s is about serving God by serving our community. We do this both within the church family and in our village. It’s our joy to be here for you! Please remember to check our website, follow us on twitter and like us on Facebook.

Oustanding Care Providers Home Counties Carers is a local family run home care business that provides friendly, reliable, trustworthy and competent carers to the elderly in their own homes. We recently achieved an OUTSTANDING rating from the CQC which puts us in the top 2 % of home care providers in Surrey and possibly the UK! “It is clear from the quality of care provided to those using this service that the staff and management are committed to person centred care and are constantly exceeding the expectations of the people that use the service. I would like to congratulate them on their work in this area and their achievement in receiving an OUTSTANDING rating overall.” Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care Everyone at Home Counties Carers shares the same belief; that all of our clients deserve the best care. The key to achieving this is simple, attract and employ the best Carers. Unfortunately attracting the best carers isn’t easy but with a business that has strong beliefs and ethics, a friendly and professional working environment, a flexible and inclusive approach to Carer’s rotas and a naturally supportive and attentive office team it makes it possible. If someone is friendly, reliable, trustworthy and competent they are on the right track to becoming a great Carer. We specifically look for Carers who naturally live and work by traditional values such as #

being polite and well mannered, timely, well presented, have good and clear communication skills and can demonstrate common sense. Matthew and Lucinda founded Home Counties Carers almost 6 years ago from their garage in West Clandon, Surrey. Since then the business has grown positively and moved to a new office in East Horsley and exciting a new base in Banstead. We tend to work within a radius of about 5 miles from our bases otherwise the carers spend too long in the car which can be a very negative experience for the Carers and Clients. Please call Matthew or Lucinda for a chat about your needs and we will always try to help.

Home Counties Carers’ Ingrid Clift snatches Gold at this year’s Surrey Care awards A huge well done and congratulations to Ingrid Clift who was the deserving winner of the Manager of the Year Award Care at Home at the prestigious Surrey Care Awards 2017 The Surrey Care Awards are the county’s ‘Oscars’ for care workers. The Awards recognise the hard work and dedication of people working in a wide variety of jobs in adult social care including dementia care, caring for people in their own

homes and caring for adults with learning disabilities. The award is for a Manager of a home care or supported living service who has shown outstanding leadership and management skills in developing a service and team that constantly delivers excellent outcomes for Clients and their Carers. Ingrid was instrumental in helping the Team at Home Counties Carers achieve the coveted OUTSTANDING rating from the Care Quality Commission, putting us in the top 2% of home care providers in Surrey! She always finds time to support any carers with work or personal issue and keeps morale in the Team very high. In her own time finds out what will help enrich Clients’ lives, even buying a cat on a Client’s behalf knowing it would give the client much needed companionship. She finds time to work and support Cherry Trees a local charity providing home from home short breaks for children and young people with a range of disabilities as well as setting up her own local community group called Blankets without Borders which encourages people to knit squares as a social group or at home to make blankets for local charities.

We are supported by St Martin’s Church to provide vital transport for East Horsley residents who require assistance to get to medical appointments at local Medical Centres, Opticians, Dentists, Podiatry centres or local hospitals. We urgently need volunteer car drivers to help with these transport needs. Just a few hours a month can make a difference. It is very rewarding and enormously appreciated by our clients.

Our clients pay the driver a fixed charge which reflects the distance travelled. Typically our volunteers are asked to drive every two or three weeks, although this is entirely voluntary and there are no fixed timetables. Please call Alastair Rutherford-Warren on 01483-283720

West Horsley Village Hall Situated in the heart of the village, West Horsley Village Hall is one of two village halls in the Horsleys which serve the local community. Most people living in the Horsleys will undoubtedly have driven or walked past West Horsley Village Hall at some stage but how many realise just what a busy and thriving place it now is?! The original Village Hall was built in 1924 when the land was donated by Lucy Theodora Roscoe of the historic Lovelace farmstead of Woodcote who was also a major contributor to the initial cost of the building. Ownership was transferred to West Horsley Parish Council and the Village Hall was run by their Social Sub-Committee. An extension of what is now the Rubin Room was funded by the local Women’s Institute as a library for the village a few years later and a second building, affectionately called “the Hut”, was also constructed. In 1962, a significant extension was funded by Sir Eric Bowater who lived at Dene Place, having moved his company head office to West Horsley during the war. Shortly afterwards, the Cedar Room was built to replace the Hut. At this time, the running was handed over to a Management Committee with the Parish Council still retaining ownership. The Lobby between the Main Hall, the Cedar Room and the Rubin Room was created in 2000 when all three rooms were connected.

Management Committee, the members of which serve as Trustees and are all volunteers. The day-to-day running of WHVH is taken care of by the Secretary/Treasurer, Julia Reardon Smith. If you are passionate about the wonderful village in which we live and would like to get involved with WHVH, additional voluntary Trustees would be very welcome. Just drop Julia an e-mail or give her a ring and she would be happy to have a chat with you about what’s involved. There are three rooms for hire at WHVH by groups or individuals, either on a regular basis or for one-off bookings. The Main Hall and Cedar Room work particularly well for parties for young children, especially with the visually attractive playground right next door, also managed by WHVH. The range of hirers and their different activities is hugely varied … from a nursery

group (Puddleducks) to a seated dance class (West Horsley Wheel of Care) and lots in between! WHVH is also the home of the WHIPS, Whippets and the WHIPS Youth Theatre. Many different exercise and dance classes are held at WHVH as well as regular meetings of local societies, clubs, charities and West Horsley Parish Council. Hirers from beyond the Horsleys are also welcome. WHVH has been brought into the 21st Century and has a regularly updated website – www. This includes lots of information about the facilities/hire charges etc plus an online diary and booking request system which means that it is always possible to see what is available and when. If you’d rather not use the online system, we are always happy to receive enquiries by e-mail ( or telephone (01483 285454, 9am–5pm Mon-Fri please).

Today, WHVH is a registered charity (number 305317) and is run by the WHVH

Homeopathy is a well-established form of holistic healthcare, beneficial to all ages.

Change one letter at a time (but not the position of any letter) to make a new word - and move from the word at the top of the ladder to the word at the bottom, using the exact number of rungs provided.

In my experience it is an effective, gentle and safe system of medicine that is non-toxic and without side effects that can support so many conditions and healthstates i.e. migraine, skin conditions, infertility, pregnancy, menstrual aggrivations, respiratory problems, sinus problems, hayfever, depression, anxiety, phobias, grief, digestive complaints, poor sleep patterns, joint and muscle complaints. Confidentiality and professional practice are of paramount importance to myself and my patients. I also see patients at the Ashtead Osteopathy and Natural Health clinic.
