West Horsley Place is delighted to host the 2019 West Horsley Village Fete

Join us in the evolving story of West Horsley Place; breathing new life and purpose into an ancient manor house and estate that has been in private ownership for nearly a thousand years. Thanks to the generosity and vision of Bamber and Christina Gascoigne’s original gift, West Horsley Place will be open to all, with culture, community and history at its heart. The Mary Roxburghe Trust is working to enable public access from 2020; with new visitor loos, heating and lighting in the manor house. Place Farm Barn will also open next year; it will be available for local community use as well as cultural and private hire events. We hope to be at the heart of our local community and are delighted to welcome everyone, we hope you enjoy exploring. Fete activities 12-4pm: Free guided tours of the house are available, please sign up in the entrance hall, places are limited. Learn about the many illustrious people associated with West Horsley Place

including Elizabeth I, Henry VIII, Guy Fawkes and Sir Walter Raleigh. Explore our 5 acres of walled gardens. Garden stewards are on hand to tell you more about the history of this remarkable place. Get creative in the West Horsley Place Arts Workshop. Adults and children can join in creating a canvas of the manor house painted by our community, create a watercolour postcard or make a clay sculpture of an historic object from our collection. . Visit the West Horsley Place stand where you can find out more about our mission and buy Bamber Gascoigne’s history of the house, Christmas cards and presents. Help us to restore and rejuvenate West Horsley Place for the local community to share and enjoy by donating today. Bamber and Christina’s generosity has helped us to carry out the most urgent repairs, but there is much more to do and every penny makes a difference. If you would like to sign up to our newsletter, make a donation or find out more about West Horsley Place please visit: www.westhorsleyplace.org info@westhorsleyplace.org

Homeopathy is a well-established form of holistic healthcare, beneficial to all ages. In my experience it is an effective, gentle and safe system of medicine that is non-toxic and without side effects that can support so many conditions and healthstates i.e. migraine, skin conditions, infertility, pregnancy, menstrual aggrivations, respiratory problems, sinus problems, hayfever, depression, anxiety, phobias, grief, digestive complaints, poor sleep patterns, joint and muscle complaints. Confidentiality and professional practice are of paramount importance to myself and my patients. I also see patients at the Ashtead Osteopathy and Natural Health clinic.

HEALTH

Horsley Rocks! Participation in choirs is at an all-time high across the UK with good reason: people from all walks of life are finding that group singing benefits our health, both mentally and physically, and fosters a sense of togetherness in a community. A recent choral census found that more than 2 million people across the UK sing regularly in a choir. Now residents of Horsley have a new opportunity to add to these numbers. Horsley Rocks is a new pop-up-project, a community choir formed to perform 4 songs at the village fete.

Jenny Copp, one of the first to sign up for this new choir said “I love to sing, although I don’t think I do it very well, and this opportunity to be part of a choir for the joy of singing is very exciting. I am looking forward to singing with friends and making new friends while improving my vocal ability and having fun. Also I think it will be a great stress reliever. Horsley Rocks will be performing for the first time at the fete. If you would like to join in future projects email: horsleyrocks@gmail.com

BOOKS

Page-Turners Whether it’s a new release or an old classic, fact or fiction, there’s always time for a good book. There Is No Planet B: A Handbook for the Make or Break Years Mike Berners-Lee Want to play your part in protecting the planet? This book can help you decide which actions to take to make the most impact. (The answers may surprise you.)Topics range from food, energy and travel to wealth distribution. It’s presented in bite-sized chunks and written in plain English.

Diary of a Somebody Brian Bilston It’s difficult to describe this book. It’s part poetry, part diary, part love story, part crime novel. Somehow, it all adds up to a very funny take on suburban life. If you struggle to find time to read, this could be the book for you, as it’s written as a series of short diary entries – perfect for dipping into each day when you have a few minutes to spare.

Vox Christina Dalcher In this dystopian tale, women are only allowed to speak 100

words a day. They’re also not allowed to read, have a job or, in fact, do very much at all other than look after their husband and children. But Dr Jean McClellan is given the chance to resume her research job and have the word limit lifted for both herself and her daughter, if she collaborates with the government. A real page-turner of a book that will appeal to fans of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Power.

Somebody I Used to Know: A Memoir Wendy Mitchell Wendy Mitchell was diagnosed with early-onset dementia at the age of 58. In her memoir, she talks about the reasons she sought a diagnosis, how she came to terms with it and the changes she’s made to her life. Somebody I Used to Know gives us an eye-opening insight into an illness that’s all too often whispered about behind closed doors. Perhaps surprisingly, the memoir is also brimming with optimism, hope and humour.

Good Omens Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman The TV series has proven a hit, but it would be criminal to

watch it without also reading the book. Crowley is a demon. Aziraphale is an angel. They’ve been good friends for a few thousand years. When they find out the apocalypse is coming and neither of the sides they represent want to stop it, the duo take it upon themselves to intervene. Hugely original, incredibly funny and, most of all, a truly entertaining story.

Tin Can Cook: 75 Simple Store-Cupboard Recipes Jack Monroe Simple, wallet-friendly dishes that are delicious and nutritious? It seems too good to be true, but Jack Monroe seems to have succeeded. Her latest book puts canned food at the heart of every dish. Recipes include Rhubarb & Custard Pancakes, Sunshine Soup, Red Lentil and Mandarin Curry, and Creamy Crabby Pasta. Most only contain a handful of ingredients and only take a few minutes to prepare, using ingredients you can pick up from the local shop.

FEATURE ARTICLE

Should youstill stillbe bepaying payingyourself yourself Should you a dividend? dividend? If you are a Director of a limited company, changes in how dividends are taxed may have left you questioning how best to take money out of the company. Tim Hardy of Shipleys LLP explains. In recent years the tax-free dividend allowance has reduced from £5,000 (in 2017/18) to its current position of £2,000. In this 2019/20 tax year, any dividend in excess of that allowance is taxed at: • 7.5% for basic rate taxpayers • 32.5% for the higher rate and • 38.1% for those with over £150,000 of taxable income. You won't, however, pay any tax if you have unused personal allowance which covers your additional dividend. Generally, it usually still makes commercial sense for Directors to take a mix of salary and dividend, but do take specialist advice to determine the right balance for your individual circumstances. Other tax-efficient options As another tax-efficient remuneration option, don’t forget that your company can contribute to your pension, company contributions into a pension are usually tax free up to the annual allowance of £40,000 (unless your total income is above £150,000 when this amount is reduced).

And whilst you can’t reduce the tax amounts due on dividends, there are ways to be more tax efficient with what you do with your money after. The first is to make the most of the current ISA allowance, which remains at £20,000 for the 2019/20 financial year. Another option is to consider the tax reliefs being offered by the Government when investing in Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs). With VCTs you gain a 30% tax relief on the investment – up to a maximum of £200,000 per year.

You also gain tax free dividends and do not face Capital Gains Tax when your VCT is sold. You do, however, have to hold your shares in a VCT for 5 years to gain these tax benefits. Before committing to any course of action do take specialist tax advice that reflects your individual circumstances.

The Smith Pearman team are now part of Shipleys in Godalming and are happy to help with any tax queries you have.

FITNESS

THE HORSLEY SHUFFLERS TOGETHER WITH THE RALEIGH SCHOOL INVITE YOU TO LINE UP IN THE FETE FIELD TO

GO THE MILE

At 2pm a one mile route open to all. Age under 7 must be accompanied by an adult

GO MORE THAN THE MILE At 2.30pm a 5k cross country run around the fields (no roads involved) Under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. ENTRY FEE £2 On a Saturday in August 2011 a small group of people met for the first time to go for a run, basically to get fit and keep fit. This was repeated the following Saturday and since then that small group has grown by word of mouth to over a hundred local people, although typically only 30-40 people of that number turn up each week with all the other commitments of daily and family life. It is truly a mixed group from people wanting to start or restart running and feeling it will be easier with other people to regular runners who like the social side of running together. There is no formal structure and it is just “friends” meeting up. New people are encouraged to turn up and will be made welcome. “I have been in the village for around 6 years now, and have until recently always run on my own. However, in March I started running with the Shufflers, and I can honestly say you couldn't wish to meet a nicer bunch of people, and I always enjoy a chat before and after the run in Quaich. In addition, it's been great discovering new routes around the local area.” Sandy Lawrence

“I have now been running with the Horsley Shufflers for over 7 years. I started out by jogging 5k and after a while I felt more confident and started to run 7 or 8k. Finally I decided to go for it and run the 10k route and I haven’t looked back. As one of the older runners (I’m in my sixties) I go out for some exercise, the opportunity to meet fellow runners and the enjoyment of the lovely paths we have in and around the Horsleys”. Cathy Verra Earlier this year the group celebrated its 400th Saturday run having only missing one Saturday in that time as it clashed with the Christmas period. This is quite an achievement from a very humble start.

ST MARTIN’S CHURCH EAST HORSLEY KT24 6RL

PART OF THE HORSLEY, OCKHAM & DOWNSIDE GROUP MINISTRY

From the Rector... When I was at the Raleigh School recently taking an assembly about the care of the environment, I was struck by how much children understand about the need to look after all that God has created. Whilst we grownups have to often think about reducing our foot print young people just get it. Thanks to great teaching and inspirational young climate activists like Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg young people are making sure that concern over the environment has reached an all time high in the UK and many more countries. ‘Creationtide’ or the ‘Season of Creation’ is the period in the annual church calendar (from 1st September to 4th October) dedicated to God as Creator and Sustainer of all life. For many Christians it is also a time when we celebrate Harvest, give thanks for the food we have and take action for those in need. Creationtide is a relatively new initiative and I’m pleased that this year St Martin’s we will be launching the season with a Pet Service on Sunday 6th September at 10.30am. Please keep an eye out on our website for more details in due course. As I write many of us will be looking forward the summer holidays. Please take a moment to remember those less fortunate than ourselves and remember that we have a Foodbank bin in the church. Drop in with non-perishable goods and help make a difference to the lives of many people.

CLUBS & SOCIETIES

Scrabble Club A Scrabble Club has been meeting since the local care network, Wheel of Care, began in 2000. It was started by local resident June Spencer who still attends today. June who plays Peggy in the Archers, has been a Horsley resident for many years and has made many friends through playing scrabble. Her first question when she meets someone new is always to enquire whether they play scrabble.

W

4

I

The club is about playing for the love of the game: “a friendly challenge” rather than being too competitive - although some of the longerstanding players are now Scrabble ‘demons’! Everyone is always happy to see new faces whether you are an experienced Scrabble player or not and help is available in the shape of Scrabble dictionaries and a very useful list of two-letter words. This summer, the scrabble club joined together in wishing June a happy 100th birthday – most importantly alongside a good game of scrabble, there’s always time for tea and cake!

If you would like to join the scrabble club, new players are always welcome. The group currently meets at the Methodist Church Hall on a Tuesday afternoon from 2.00–3.45pm. A small donation of £1.50 is requested as a contribution towards the running costs. Visit the Wheel of Care stand at the village fete to find out more.

event in Pre 1914 times was a fore-runner of the West Horsley Summer fete with a variety of displays and competitions. One children’s prize was for the best collection of queen wasps!

There are wide range of tools to aid almost every aspect of gardening. Most garden tools are used for cutting, one way or another. Secateurs for cutting and trimming stems and thin branches, hoes for separating weed heads from their roots, spades for cutting through soil in order to dig and plant and so on. To do a good job tools need to be appropriately sharp. A visit to a garden centre soon shows how a fortune can be spent on tools whilst in contrast a visit to many a garden shed will often reveal how neglected, dirty, rusty some tools are allowed to become. The Horsley Garden Society stand will be showing how to recover blunt and neglected tools for a modest charge to be shared between the fete and Garden Society funds. Horsley Garden Society in various guises has existed for over 100 years. Indeed its summer

GARDENING

Horsley’s Community Garden Grace and Flavour, The Horsleys’ Community Garden are delighted to be at the fete and hosting a miniature garden competition. Pre-made entries are welcome – or visit the stall at the fete and get creative, for a small entry cost all materials provided (but bring accessories with you if you want to add something special) Judging will be at 3pm on the day of the fete. Entries are welcome from any age! A miniature garden make at home step by step guide: 1. Get any seed tray 2. Fill with compost 3. Get creative using natural materials - such as twigs, seed heads, pine cones, gravel, bark, shells… anything you like! Our local community garden started 10 years ago in the walled garden at Dene Place in West Horsley. In 2009 volunteers from East and West Horsley started the hard work to clear the garden of bramble, nettles, knotweed and rubbish that had accumulated over the many years in which it had been abandoned. The walled garden is now fully cultivated and a wide range of vegetables, fruit and flowers are grown. A very active community of volunteers grow produce without the use of pesticides or artificial fertilisers. An extensive wildlife environment has been created along with a large number of individual allotments. Grace and Flavour, the Horsley Community Kitchen garden, continues to thrive and we always welcome new members. Team days are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. There are regular breaks where tea, coffee and cake are served. Find out more by visiting the website, www.graceandflavour.org. Do come and visit our stall at the fete where we will have fresh produce on sale, cropped that morning.

PETS

Looking for something new to teach your dog?

West Horsley Village Fete: Fun Dog show from 1pm, have a go scurry challenge and have a go at scentwork.

LM Photography

Dogs have a highly sensitive nose, vastly superior to our own. Scentwork is a natural behaviour for a dog and essential in hunting and finding prey. As man’s best friend, this behaviour has been put to many uses – for example in police work, search and rescue, and now as an up and coming dog sport. As a dog sport, scentwork has emerged from detection style nose work as practised by customs and excise, explosives detection, search and rescue and medical detection dogs. As a training activity, scentwork is fun, very rewarding and at the same time mentally tiring for your dog. It will improve the relationship between you and your dog and is a great confidence builder especially for the shy or nervous dog. You can participate whether it is just for fun, or go on and enter trials and gain qualifications.

Dr S Taylor Dr R Woodriffe Dr M Talbot

By giving your dog a job to do, we find that they are learning to relax and are able to cope with situations they would have perhaps previously struggled with. We spend so much time as owners instructing and guiding our dogs, scentwork is an ideal way to help grow a dog’s confidence at a pace they can cope with. As scentwork is a low impact sport, it is suitable for all ages, breeds and standards. It is also ideal for an injured or older dog that requires mental rather than physical stimulation. Come down with your dogs and meet Surrey Scentwork and LM Photography at the West Horsley Village Fete on the 14th September where there will be an opportunity to find out more!

It takes a village… A huge thank you to everyone who said ‘yes’ and helped make things happen today: • To The Horsley Directory for this special fete edition of the magazine. • To West Horsley Parish Council for initiating the event and providing continued backing. • To the local businesses who were so generous in contributing to the fete: Buckland Design, Bell and Colvill, Conisbees, The Bakery, Quaich • To the many Horsley folk who volunteered their time and support in so many ways – there are more than 100 of you … thank you! • To the many clubs and organisations who were enthusiastic about taking part – you were at the heart of today as we celebrated Horsley community. • Also many thanks to The Mary Roxburghe Trust who opened up West Horsley Place and invited our village in! The fete is a biennial event – if you’d like to get involved with the next fete in 2021 get in touch: westhorsleyvillagefete@gmail.com
